“Many Cultures, One Voice: Promote Equality & Inclusion”

The month of May commemorates the arrival of the first Japanese to immigrate to the United States, a fisherman “John Mung” on May 7, 1868 and marks the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869, of which the majority of workers who laid the tracks were Chinese. Join us at the library in honoring the generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders who have enriched our history throughout the centuries. Checkout our display featuring books, films, and audio materials on Asian culture, religion, historical personalities, cooking and more.

Nuremberg Getaway

May 1-3 Nuremberg is really a perfect weekend away from Garmisch: fairly close, still in Bavaria, inexpensive by comparison with many other places and it has lots of varied attractions. What is holding us back? Since the Middle Ages, Nuremberg has been regarded as one of the cities’ most closely tied to a “European Identity”. Nuremberg is famous for many reasons: the famous Kaiserburg castle (the main castle of the Holy Roman Emperor), Richard Wagner chose this city as the scene for his operatic drama “The Mastersingers of Nuremberg”, Adolf Hitler appreciated its historic credentials and made it the home of his greatest propaganda rallies during the Third Reich, and the Allies understood that it had become the perfect venue to put Nazi officials on trial at the famous “Nuremberg Trials” following World War II. It has been stated by your tour guide that the Nuremberg Documentation Center is “best museum he knows” on the history of the Nazis. You will have the opportunity to visit the German National Museum, which is best known for the cultural aspects of German History. The list goes on, so join us and discover the many historical and cultural experiences Nuremberg has to offer. Price: $250 per adult, $125 for children (5-12); single supplement is an additional $45 per night (includes transportation, hotel accommodations and breakfast).

OUTDOOR RECREATION

Garmisch Historic Walking Tour

May 4 Where were the witches burned? What’s the story behind the fountain of the woman and the decapitated head? Why are the buildings painted with religious art? This tour is packed with answers to all of your Garmisch questions and other fun Garmisch facts. We may even have time for a beer and some food in one of Garmisch’s best restaurants after the tour has finished. Price: $10 per adult; free for children under 12.

Venice and Verona, Italy

May 8-10 In just one short weekend, you will see both Venice and Verona! On Friday afternoon, we drive to Vicenza where we will spend the night. Early Saturday morning, we make the short train trip to Venice where we will see great art and architecture, (Paul’s guided tours of the Academia and the Scuola di San Rocco are renowned), pigeons in St. Mark’s Square, gondolas and more. We will again spend the second night in Vicenza before our trip to Verona on Sunday. In Verona, you have the opportunity to tour the famous setting to Romeo and Juliet with its Roman Arena before dining at a wonderful restaurant. Price: $299 per adult; $145 per child (5-12); Single supplement is an additional $45 per night (includes transportation, hotel accommodations and breakfast). Passport required.
