BOOK CLUB
This year why not feast on books? See what’s on the menu at the library while planning your Thanksgiving holiday spread. Whether your family is vegan, vegetarian or traditional turkey and pumpkin pie fans, the library has plenty of cookbooks with new and adventurous dishes to try out. You can also bone up on your American history or gobble up one of the latest best sellers. Indulge your appetite for books; the library has an “all-you-can-read” take out policy.
Join in the guided discussion of the delightful book “The Rosie Project” by Graeme Simsion. When a genetics professor sets up a project designed to help him meet the perfect wife, he meets Rosie who is anything but his ideal mate. Sign up at the library to receive emails about upcoming meetings and books. Books are available at the library.
NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH Check out our special display this month of books, films and audiobooks in honor of Native Americans. Our featured book this month is Caleb’s Crossing, by Geraldine Brooks. MUNICH: BRIGHT TOUR
PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC
Wednesday, November 11 is Veteran’s Day and we have a chance to use the American holiday to see Munich’s beautiful side: a few of the impressive churches, one of the overwhelming museums, and some of the famous landmarks and fountains. We can also eat in one of the really good Bavarian restaurants. Since we are travelling by train, you can plan on being back in Garmisch by 6 p.m. However, if you would like to take in some of the Munich night-life, Paul, your tour guide, will provide information on how to take the train home at your leisure. The opera on this evening is Mozart’s “Abduction from the Seraglio” and is great fun! Price: $30 per adult; $15 per child under the age of 12.
The Golden City just gets better and better. Spared extensive bombing damage in WWII, Prague still has an authentic feel to its wonderful architecture. The capital of Bohemia has the famous Charles Bridge, and Old Town Square, the beautiful St. Vitus Cathedral and the Old Castle and a wonderful tradition of music making by “Bohemians” of all stripes. We usually attend an opera in one of Prague’s three opera houses where the performances are inexpensive and subtitled in English. If time permits your tour guide will also provide an excellent tour of the Franz Kafka Museum and the Alfons Mucha “Slav Epic.” In addition to the city’s historical and cultural attributes it has a reputation for quality Czech beer as well! On our return trip back to Garmisch we will stop in Pilsen briefly for a meal at a great restaurant for a quick lunch. Price: $290 per adult, $145 per child (5-12); single supplement is an additional $45 per night (price of trip includes transportation, hotel accommodations, and breakfast).
NOVEMBER 11
NUREMBERG GETAWAY NOVEMBER 6-8
Since the Middle Ages, Nuremberg has been regarded as one of the city’s most closely tied to a “European Identity”. The city of Nuremberg is famous for many reasons: the famous Kaiserburg castle (the main castle of the Holy Roman Emperor), Richard Wagner chose this city as the scene for his operatic drama “The Mastersingers of Nuremberg”, Adolf Hitler appreciated its historic credentials and made it the home of his greatest propaganda rallies during the Third Reich, and the Allies understood that it had become the perfect venue to put Nazi officials on trial at the famous “Nuremberg Trials” following World War II. It has been stated by your tour guide that the Nuremberg Documentation Center is “best museum he knows on the history of the Nazis. Price: $ 250 per adult, $125 for children (5-12); single supplement is an additional $45 per night (price of trip includes transportation, hotel accommodations, and breakfast).
