NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
This month, learn something new about the history and cultures of some of the first Americans. Check out our special display of books, films and audiobooks in honor of Native Americans. We will be highlighting the five-part DVD PBS series “We Shall Remain.” The series spans four centuries and shows Native Americans’ history as part of the national experience, from the Mayflower to the Wounded Knee occupation of 1973. The library has plenty of other materials to peak your interest, so visit and explore.
DON’T BE A TURKEY…READ!
Thanksgiving is just around the corner…enjoy it with a good book. Bone up on your American history or gobble up one of the latest best sellers. See what’s cookin’ at the library when planning your Thanksgiving holiday dinner. Whether your family is vegan, vegetarian or traditional turkey and pumpkin pie fans, the library has plenty of cookbooks with new and adventurous dishes to try out. Indulge your appetite for books; the library has an “all-you-can-read” take out policy.

The eLearning program will be available to users inside and outside of the library. Rosetta Stone offers core lessons to build reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, focused activities to refine grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, and a Mobile app to enable learners to reinforce language on the go. Ask at the library for more details.

NUREMBERG GETAWAY NOVEMBER 4-6
Nuremberg is a perfect weekend away from Garmisch: fairly close, still in Bavaria, inexpensive by comparison with many other places and has many varied attractions. Kaiserburg, the main castle of the Holy Roman Empire, sits on top of the central hill within the city walls. Richard Wagner chose this city as the scene for his operatic drama “The Mastersingers of Nuremberg.” Adolf Hitler appreciated the historic credentials and made it the background for his largest propaganda rallies during the Third Reich. The allies appreciated the same historical value as the perfect venue to press charges against some of those same personages at the famous “Nuremberg Trials” following World War II. The Nuremberg Documentation Center is one of the most thorough museums on the history of the Nazis. From the development of arts and clothing to medicine and instruments, the German National Museum offers a wide variety of exhibits on the history of the German-speaking region. Hotel accommodations, breakfast and transportation included. Price: $250/adult; Single supplement $45/night; $125/child
HOLIDAY WEEKENDS IN PRAGUE
*
NOVEMBER 10-13
Spared extensive bombing damage in WWII, Prague still has an authentically historic feel to its beautiful architecture. The capital of Bohemia has the famous Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, St. Vitus Cathedral in the Old Castle and a wonderful tradition of music by “Bohemians” of all stripes. Also included is a tour of the Franz Kafka Museum, as well as Alfons Mucha’s cycle of 20 paintings known as “The Slav Epic.” Hotel accommodations, breakfast and transportation included. Price: $390/adult; Single supplement $45/night; $195/child * passport required
