Help Protect Our Environment Earth Day - Plastic pollution involves the accumulation of plastic products in the environment that adversely affects wildlife, wildlife habit or humans. Many types and forms of plastic pollution exist. Plastic pollution can adversely affect lands, waterways and oceans. Efforts to reduce the use of plastics and to promote plastic recycling have occurred. Some supermarkets charge their customers for plastic bags, and in some places more efficient reusable or biodegradable materials are being used in place of plastics. Some communities and businesses have put a ban on some commonly used plastic items, such as bottled water and plastic bags. According to the World-Watch Institute’s State of the World report some 4 to 5 trillion plastic bags— including large trash bags, thick shopping bags and thin grocery bags—were produced globally in 2002. Roughly 80 percent of those bags were used in North America and Western Europe. Every year, Americans reportedly throw away 100 billion plastic grocery bags. April 22 is Earth Day and in order to take part in reducing the use of plastics, both the Tower Barracks and Rose Barracks Libraries are conducting a “Bag Swap” program: bring at least 10 old plastic bags and receive a reuseable shopping bag from your Library. Did you know you can save trees by accessing over 400 magazines online for free? Zinio Digital Magazines are available through your Library ‘My Account’. Zinio provides instant access to many popular titles, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from home, or anywhere you are. April 3-4 Have you ever wanted to learn to skydive? Here is your chance to learn how to fall with style! This 2-day course consists of ground school and one solo jump. During ground school you will learn how to exit the aircraft, proper body positioning for freefall, emergency procedures, parachute landing fall and landing. Weather permitting, in the afternoon of the second day, you will load the aircraft with two instructors and at 14,000 feet you will conduct a freefall with the instructors by your side ensuring your safety. As you approach the drop zone an instructor will talk you into your landing. This jump counts towards the 25 required for obtaining a United States Parachute Association Class A License. Price: $480; weigh-in required for registration. Includes transportation. April 9 & 16 Join the Wild B.O.A.R. team for an evening tutorial about disc golf. We will be discussing the various discs and their uses as well as different throwing techiniques. We’ll also cover the basic rules for playing on the course to get you started.

April 12 We travel to another one of King Ludwig’s fantastic castles! Be prepared to see the amazing architectural work. The Chiemsee lake has two main islands: The Herrenchiemsee (with the castle from King Ludwig), and the Frauenchiemsee Island. The Herrenchiemsee palace built by King Ludwig ll in 1878 was never completed but was meant to be a replica of the Palace of Versailles in France. Tours of the castle and its extensive grounds on the island are conducted throughout the summer. Frauenchiemsee, the smaller one of the two major islands on the Chiemsee houses a Benedictine nunnery, built in 782, and a small village. Once we arrive at the Chiemsee lake you can purchase 3 tour packages from the boat pier ticket office (approx. €10-30 per person). Price: $59 peradult, $49 per child. April 18 Boleslaweic, Poland is the heart of the pottery industry. The factories around and in this outstanding city continue to hand stamp the patterns on each piece in the hundred year old tradition. Flourished due to careful attention to design, both in body shapes and patterns designs range from original ones inspired by the peacock to more modern patterns. The pottery is made from white clay and many pieces are microwave and dishwasher-safe. We will take you to different stores, to offer you a wide choice to start or complete a collection of fascinating handmade pottery. Price: $69 per person.
SALZBURG, AUSTRIA **
April 18 For those who love to sightsee, Salzburg is the city to visit! Rich in history and character, Salzburg offers: gardens, shops, museums and more. Ride in a horse-drawn carriage down the historic alleys and then stop at a café and try a “Sacher Torte”, Austria’s famous chocolate cake. Don’t forget to check out Mozart’s birth-house on Getreidegasse Strasse 9 within the old town wall and the Mirabell Palace and Gardens, where scenes from “Sound of Music” were filmed at. There’s hop on - hop off bus tours and walking tours that begin at the Tourist information office. Price: $59 per adult, $49 per child (3-12), $10 per child under 3. April 19 Tour the historic Dachau Concentration Camp memorial site and the German Museum in the heart of Munich. The museum is the largest technological museum in the world. April 25 As Rothenburg is the most well preserved medieval town in Germany, both history fans and families, come to visit. Be sure to walk on the city walls, see the criminal museum with its instruments of torture, and shop at the enchanting Kaethe Wolfahrt Christmas store. A climb up the city hall tower gives you an impressive view of the charming city. Join a walking tour of Rothenburg that begins in the afternoon at the city hall building and takes you through the fascinating attractions. Another sight we recommend is the doll and toy museum off a side street from the main town square. Visitors can also take horse and buggy rides with their children and enjoy the view. April 26 Discover the unique castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau built by King Ludwig II. May 21-25; Sign up by April 22 Istria, the heart-shaped peninsula in Northern Croatia, has everything you need for a perfect vacation; beautiful beaches, beautiful towns and great food. It is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. Istria and Kvarner Bay have more than 1000 km of coastline. Istria has developed itself into an excellent wine-growing region, where olive oil producers and Istrian truffles are famous as well. We will visit the town of Pula, known for its Roman ruins, including the still standing Roman Amphitheater.
