Meet Dawn... ...‘I enjoyed the beginners class ‘Yellow Brick Road’ so much that I continued with the Intermediate class ‘Film at Five’ and didn’t stop until successfully completing an advanced ‘Log Cabin’ quilt which is pictured.’ Taking quilting classes is a very fulfilling experience. It is a great way to meet new people, be creative and get new ideas. The instructor, Cathy, was wonderful. Classes are small enough where if you need extra help it was easy to get. Even if you have never used a machine, there is a class for you. It is nice to have others in the class for opinions and help with picking colors or matching of fabric. Where else can you go once a week for an extra inch or two? Try it out and surprise your family with your newly gained skills.

Sports & Fitness Become an Official! Officiating sports provides a terrific outlet for individuals who care about sports. While officiating can be rewarding and even provide an extra bit of income, it takes a special person to excel in these positions. Officials must make quick decisions, resolve conflicts and handle pressure. As more sports are offered and more players participate, there is a continued need for officials. Any player or coach who has put time and effort into a sport appreciates the same type of effort from the officials, umpires, judges or stewards who oversee the games. Officials are expected to maintain strong character and unquestionable integrity. In working with participants, Officials are expected to contribute to the development and educational experience of the competitors. Benefits include some extra income, social contacts, improved physical fitness and satisfaction through public service. Pay varies based on the sport and the level but it typically is on a per-game basis. Pay also can go up for postseason games, opportunities that typically are awarded to more seasoned officials. Consider these factors before becoming an Official: 1. Sports officials are placed in highly charged situations. They need to keep their cool, even if others around them lose perspective and control. 2. It takes a time commitment to become a top Official. There is more involved than reading a rulebook. Officials attend meetings, stay updated on changes in the sport and attend clinics yearly to improve. 3. Through it all, Officials are able to have fun doing their job, confident that they have put in the time to give their best. If interested contact your local Sports Office.
Upcoming Officials Clinics: Flag Football Rose Barracks, Bldg. 355 August 4-7, 6-9 p.m. Hohenfels, Bldg. 88 August 4-6, 6 p.m.
Mr. Lee has been officiating since 1981- when he was still very active in playing sports. He found it and still finds it important to know the rules whether your an official or playing the game. He encourages people, male or female, to attend an officiating clinic and try officiating. No skill or knowledge of the sport needed, the clinics will teach you all you need to know. “Come out and help us make things right.

Rose Barracks Fitness Center named SSG Jesse L. Williams Fitness Center Photos and story by GERALYN T. JANKE, 1LT, MS, SPO Med, RSS, 2CR
On Wednesday, May 21, 2014, the Second Cavalry Regiment was privileged to dedicate the former Rose Barracks Fitness Center to SSG Jesse L. Williams and re-name it in his honor. While on a combat mission, on December 17, 2013, SSG Jesse Williams was killed in action after his aircraft came under enemy fire. SSG Jessica Dunda (left) and SFC Cesar Cobena (right) unveiling the new signs on the fitness center
SSG Williams’ friends, SFC Cesar Cobena, SSG Jessica Dunda, and SGT Steven Lord unveiled the three new signs that the Department of Public Works fabricated for the occasion. Members of the 2d Cavalry Association were in attendance, as they had travelled to Vilseck for the Week of the Dragoon, a celebration commemorating the Regiment’s 178th birthday. The Fitness Center is a staple of the installation and frequented by over 1,000 Soldiers, DoD Civilians, Family members and retirees every day. The gym provides both an indoor site for Physical Training as well as a location for Soldiers to improve fitness on their own time. The Rose Barracks Fitness Center takes pride in preparing Soldiers for combat by ensuring a physically ready force. SSG Jesse L. Williams spent countless hours in this gym, working out and inspiring those around him to improve their fitness. His willingness to lead and mentor his Soldiers on their personal physical fitness goal, often during his off-duty time, was a testament to his commitment to excellence. SSG Williams’ enthusiasm to push his own limits and encourage Soldiers to do the same was truly incredible. COL Sims giving his remarks during the ceremony

YT T I N U M M O C OEHR W N E F A R G & GARMISCH
Congratulations Garmisch Community Theater Garmisch Community Theater reopened with the comedy PVT. WARS which was entered into the annual IMCOM Europe Entertainment Tournament of Plays (TOPPER) competition. Our play was a huge success, especially since we were up against some big military communities with wellestablished, great theater programs. We received 11 nominations and awards, amongst which are Best Play and Best Director of a Play (Stephen Simpson) and Best Actor in a Play (Nicholas Bennett). In the end a TOPPER award went to James Miller for “Best Debut Performance in a Play.” A Special Achievement Award “The Phoenix Award” went to Michele Schneider, Crafts & Entertainment Director and her Garmisch Players volunteer group for re-establishing the Garmisch Theater program, which we are most proud of. If you would like to participate either on stage as actor/actress with or without experience or back stage with tech, set design, costumes or props contact The Craft Tree Arts & Crafts Shop.
Family and MWR Volunteer of the Year Congratulations to Sadie Burger for her commitment to the Grafenwoehr Performing Arts Center (GPAC) . Sadie volunteered over 850 hours in the past year. Her dedication was instrumental in sustaining a vital theater program in this community. Sadie started volunteering by acting and working closely with the theater specialist. When the specialist left in 2012, Sadie accepted many of the responsibilities in the interim. Her education in Youth Theater, her work experience and knowledge in Theater since she was 14-years old, was a stroke of luck for this community. Since 2012 she has taken the lead in 3 full-length productions and 2 one acts; one being performed at the Grafenwoehr Elementary School. When asked why she volunteered so many hours she compared it to playing a sport, “Theater is my passion; it is the ultimate team sport everyone does is together.” Although, GPAC is taking a break from performances during the summer, Sadie will be back in the Fall doing what she loves and does best. Interested in participating in our Theater program.? Become a member of the GPAC team by acting, directing, prop construction, lighting tech, sound tech, costume design and much more. - Sadie Burger Grafenwoehr Performing Arts

Explore Bavaria with Outdoor Recreation The largest German state “Bavaria” gives you many choices to enjoy the nature and the culture. Not only can you experience Volksfests on post and in the local communities, our Outdoor Recreation Centers are your first stop for travelling in Bavaria and Germany as well as many European countries at affordable prices. Outdoor Recreation Centers offer also equipment rentals, cabins and camping sites on post. Each center differs so please stop by the local center for more information and what’s available in each location. The Wild B.O.A.R.
