Performing Arts Center
Almost falling in love Story By Trecia A. Wilson Photos By Eva Creel Somewhere in northwestern Maine is a small, fictional town called Almost. Located almost 165 miles from Bangor in the midst of open farming country, this town has the perfect view of the aurora borealis. The winters there are harsh and only the hardiest of folk survive the long winters there. Like every small town in America, Almost has had its share of love and heartbreak and it’s those stories revealed in the play “Almost, Maine” by John Cariani, presented by the Grafenwoehr Performing Arts Center and directed by Steve Thornbrugh. From a couple who find each other after a trip around the world, to another that finds itself falling apart, Cariani reveals the simple things that occur in relationships: love, laughter, joy, heartbreak, sadness and surprise. Played out in an unconventional format, each scene is a portrait of a new couple with only the characters’ names sharing scenes, but all are held together by the commonalities of time, space and the universal experiences of humankind. Cariani finds the whole by revealing the parts, one couple at a time. The cast embraced each character’s foibles, bringing to life each hilarious, tender and awkward moment, evoking laughter, groans and sometimes tears from the audience. They reveal new relationships out of old and extract feelings from those who never thought they could feel.
who needed it. The perfect blend of dinner, comedy and romance, this event was perfect for February, the month of the Valentine.

In the Baptist backwoods of the Bible Belt, the beleaguered Turpin family proves that living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and always hilarious. Despite their earnest efforts to pull themselves together for their father’s funeral, the Turpin’s other problems keep overshadowing the solemn occasion.
