In response to customer feedback, Family and MWR is pleased to announce the planned opening of Rosalia’s Italian Pastaria later this year.
Rosalia’s (“Rosie’s”) will offer a broad menu of delicious Italian classics, American

A historic medieval city with a vibrant, urban lifestyle Regensburg is the best preserved medieval city of Germany. Visitors can experience 2000 years of history by strolling through the narrow lanes and broad squares of the Old Town. Thanks to its wealth of monuments Regensburg became UNESCO world heritage city in 2006. Besides its rich past, the city on the Danube offers a vibrant urban lifestyle. Throughout the whole year there are lots of festivals and events in Regensburg. Open-air events in medieval surroundings offer something for every taste, from opera to orchestral music, from theatre to dance. At The Regensburg Marathon on May 12, you can feel the sporty spirit of the World Heritage city. The famous early music festival Tage Alter Musik from May 17 - 20 offers artists from different countries, playing classical music in several historic venues. The Jazz Weekend from July 11 - 14 is highly recommended as Jazz groups and artists perform on several squares and courtyards in the Old Town for free. Another highlight in the festival season is the splendid Thurn and Taxis Festival from July 12 - 21. Bavarian hospitality can be found at the Regensburger Dult, a popular fair with Bavarian music, food and drinks, which takes place twice a year: two weeks in May and two weeks in August. This typical Bavarian festival is like the “mini-version” of the Oktoberfest in Munich.

2013 Youth Ski & Snowboard Program By Lawrence Tindall, Garmisch CYSS Sports & Fitness Director and Youth Ski & Snowboard “Wonderful Wednesday” organizer.
The long-running annual youth ski and snowboard program, known as Wonderful Wednesday (WW), concluded another safe and successful season. The program is a cooperative effort between volunteer ski instructors, Family and MWR, Garmisch Elementary-Middle Schools and Edelweiss Lodge and Resort. It has been ongoing since the 1970s. This was also a very challenging season due to the large groups of beginning skiers and snowboarders, ranging from 5 - 14 years old. This year 116 young community members took to the slopes to learn or improve their skills. This amounted to a great task completed by community volunteers getting everyone skiing or snowboarding. The Running of the Gates, an annual tradition where the students get to demonstrate their newfound abilities for their parents, classmates and instructors, was not a required event. However, most of the students participated and everyone got to see what they had learned through their 10 sessions of instruction. The finale is a small compilation of what the youth learned and provided a great family experience. The WW program presents all of the students with participation awards because it’s about what they learned during their 10 week sessions. Award categories included team building, building self-esteem and confidence, communication, being outside of their comfort zone and learning a lifelong skill. Injuries are inherent to winter sports training because any time there’s a combination of youth, downhill speed, and beginning skiers and snowboarders with snow and ice, the chances for injuries are high. If you really think about the amount of time the participants were on the slopes, averaging about 30 hours each, and then multiply that by number of participants, it equals 2,940 individual hours (or 176,400 minutes) of potential for an injury. This year there were no injuries, a testament to both students and instructors. Child, Youth & School Services thanks our community volunteer instructors and staff for a very safe 2013 season!

Unit Level Volleyball Championships Come out and support the best teams in the Garrison as they battle it out for their chance to represent USAG Grafenwoehr at the IMCOM Europe Championships. The top teams from the Grafenwoehr and Rose Barracks Unit Level Leagues will compete at the Grafenwoehr Physical Fitness Center.
Annual Box Run Albertshof, Bldg. 1226 Choose from a 10K run, 5K walk/run or 3K Kid’s Fun Run. Free T-shirt for the first 50 to register. Awards will go to the top two finishers in each category. Register by April 18 and receive a $5 discount. Cost is $15 per person. The Kid’s Fun Run is free.

Little Mike Softball Field, Rose Barracks Improve your run time, test your limits. Half-Marathon participants will receive an event T-shirt. Pre-registration for the HalfMarathon is $15. On-site registration will be $25. The 5K Fun Run is free.
Challenge yourself to complete a 5K obstacle course that will test your strength, stamina and camaraderie. Crawl through the mud, traverse uncertain terrain and more. The challenge is open to teams of four. First 20 teams to register will receive a T-shirt. Cost is $10 per person.

Run, climb and jump past 13 hard-core obstacles spaced out over a grueling, 13-kilometer course along the Grafenwoehr Training Area’s Rough Terrain Trail. The trail is a training resource designed to test small-units’ ability to operate in a rugged and physicallydemanding environment. Obstacles include cargo net and rock climbs, muscle-aching tire flips and sled pulls, an oxygen-sucking stair run and a filthy mud crawl. Complete the run to earn a commemorative T-shirt. Participants can register with MWR online at www. grafenwoehrmwr.com or by stopping by the Grafenwoehr Physical Fitness Center. Preregistration fee is $15 per participant; register the day of the run for $25. All U.S. and NATO ID cardholders over 18 years of age are eligible to participate as either individuals or teams.

Fox Sports, MLB Athletes Team with U.S. Troops in Europe to Promote Resiliency

Exercises included circuit training and multiple calisthenics followed by a run where cadences were called, which help the formation stay in step.

The Directorate Plans Training Mobilization Security (DPTMS) Operations, Family and Morale Welfare and Recreation and Grafenwoehr Public Affairs in cooperation with Installation Management Command Europe, IMCOM Houston and U.S. Army Europe coordinated the visit. The leadership with USAREUR and IMCOM-E concurred that the Bavaria Military Community and U.S. Army Garrison Grafenwoehr was the ideal location to host the visit based on the installation’s unique mission as the largest training command outside of the continental United States and Rose Barracks as the home of the 2CR, the soon-to-be only remaining brigade combat team in Germany. The Soldiers, Family members and civilians of the community were a good representation focusing on the resiliency acquired through the diverse challenges met in Europe. The purpose of the visit, which was called ‘Training with the Troops,’ was to amplify the U.S. Army’s campaign regarding physical fitness through the use of inspiration and motivation. The visit promoted resiliency and education not only for the Troops of the Regiment, but to the visitors as well. It also showcased the spirit of 2CR Troops, Families and civilians, and their daily contribution to the National Defense. Fox Sports also brought eleven young women know as the Fox Sports Girls who promote various sports to fans in the United States. These ladies announce live26
“We got up bright and early and we came out here to do some circuit training, running logs across the field and pulling chains,” said Luke Gregerson, a player with the San Diego Padres. “We did some core work, you name it we did it right here and right afterward we did a mile and a half run.” Rollie Fingers, a hall of famer talked about his learning experience he gained from the visit. “I’m just learning a lot and it’s so technical now,” said Fingers. “When I was in the Army we didn’t have all this technical stuff. I think it’s a lot better the way it’s done now. You can really save lives.”
COL James E. Saenz, Bavaria Military Community and U.S. Army Grafenwoehr Commander, explained why the visit from the baseball players was important and what type of experience the event presented to the players. “I think it’s a great experience for the Major League Baseball players to see what the day to day life of a Soldier is,” said Saenz. “It’s been really eye-opening for them and just helps build that mutual respect and understanding.” PFC. Cody Pflughoeft with Bravo Troop, Regimental Support Squadron, 2CR, and native of Houston, explained how well the visit went and how he enjoyed the experience.

“It’s exciting to me because I am a baseball fan,” said Pflughoeft. “The organization was quite nice and I was surprised at how enthusiastic they all were, including the players and Fox Sports Girls. They were all just excited to be here and have fun. Even though they were tired they kept going and had a blast. I’m thankful I got this opportunity.” Saenz expressed his gratitude and appreciation for being able to host the visit from the Fox Sports Girls, MLB players and Hall of Famers. “I think we are very honored here in the Bavarian Military Community that they chose our location to come and spend time with our Troops,” said Saenz. “For them to choose this as the place to come to spend time with our young Troops and exchange 27
