Bowling - could this be something for you? Bowling helps in burning calories and works muscle groups not usually exercised. The flexing and stretching in bowling works tendons, joints, ligaments and muscles in the arms and promotes weight loss. While most sports are not for elderly people, it is possible to practice bowling very well at advanced ages. Apart from the physical benefits, it also has psychosocial benefits, strengthening friendships or creating new ones in groups. *
Give it a try at Rose Barracks Bowling Center. Everybody is welcome.

Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth throughout the Holiday Season When someone hears “Sweet Potato Pie”, they instantly conjure up ideas of the South and Southern Cooking. The two seem inevitably connected, although it’s somewhat misleading. What many people don’t realize, although it’s quite popular in the Southern States, it didn’t necessarily originate there. Early references to “potato pie” have been in English cookbooks dating from the mid to late 18th Century. King Henry VIII was known to believe the vegetables to be an aphrodisiac and ate them with lots of sugar and spices. Once the Americas were discovered, ships began transporting sweet potatoes to the United States, Due to the farming opportunities its reputation became synonymous with the South. Sweet potato pie rivals pumpkin pie as a dessert for holiday dinners, with claims that sweet potatoes make a smoother, creamier pie. Typical ingredients include cream or milk, sugar, and spices like nutmeg and cinnamon. Some recipes include brandy, and several recipes combine the sweet potato pie and pecan pie, with a glazed pecan topping. Generally topped with whipped cream and served warm or cold, Sweet Potato Pie is a delicious addition to any Thanksgiving or Holiday dinner. It is easy to make and even easier to get lost in the smell, taste and the excitement of baking this famous dessert.
Recipe Rinse and boil the whole sweet potatoes until soft. Preheat oven to 400F. Remove skin from the sweet potatoes using a fork, while still warm. Place deskinned sweet potatoes in a large mixing bowl. Add butter and condensed milk. Mash until smooth. Mix the rest of ingredients, except for eggs and pie crusts, into the mashed sweet potatoes. Mix well. Taste mixture. Add more cinnamon, nutmeg, or vanilla according to your personal liking. Add eggs and mix well. Mixture should be smooth and creamy. Use a ladle and carefully scoop into pie shells. Fill pie shells mostly to the top. The Sweet potato pie will rise, but only slightly. Place on center rack of oven and bake for approximately 45 minutes or until fork comes out clean.
Ingredients (makes 2 pies)
2-3 medium / large Sweet Potatoes 1 cup Sugar 1 cup Brown Sugar 2 Eggs 14 oz. Sweetened Condensed Milk 2 tablespoons Cinnamon 1 teaspoon Nutmeg 2 tablespoons Vanilla Extract 1 teaspoon Salt 1 cup melted Butter 1 ½ cup Milk 2 deep dish Pie Crusts (store bought or homemade)
Serve warm or cold. Top with whipped cream, ice cream, fresh fruit or anything else your imagination can come up with. ENJOY!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Child, Youth & School Services
Something for Everyone Child, Youth & School Services is more than just the CDCs! CYSS offers programs and services for children and youth from 6 weeks through 18 years, including youth programs, instructional programs, team sports and individual sports and fitness. The Child Development Centers (CDCs) offer full day care for infants through preschool, part-day preschool and hourly care. Using the “Creative Curriculum” as a planning tool, CDC staff develops activities that teach children basic skills through play. Activities focus on pre-reading and pre-math skills as well as social-emotional development and creative arts. The CDCs offer part-day preschool for three and four year olds and Strong Beginnings pre-kindergarten enrichment classes to prepare your four year old for kindergarten. German and American preschool teachers merge cultural activities to teach children language, songs, games and the arts from both perspectives. CDCs also offer before and after-school programs for kindergarten children as well as those attending DoDDS Sure Start and Developmental Preschool. In Grafenwoehr, Family Child Care (FCC) Homes have openings for full day, part day and hourly childcare. Many of our FCC homes offer extended and weekend care, providing parents with a safe and secure environment for their children when mission requirements extend past the normal work day. FCC homes offer a home-like environment for children with trained professional providers. Teen Sitters and/or CYSSitters are available to provide care in your home. Similar to a “nanny”, CYSSitters can provide long or short-term care for families. 10
The School-Age Centers (SAC) offer before and after school programs for children from 1st-5th grade. SAC programs are also open to children during school breaks and in the summer. Summer Camp features field trips, bowling and exciting outdoor activities. During the school year, SAC provides a Homework Lab and a Youth Technology Lab in addition to Boys & Girls Clubs of America and 4-H Club activities. The Youth Centers (YC) are open after school and on Saturdays for youth in the 6th-12th grades. Check with the Youth Center in your community for hours of operation, as they vary in Garmisch, Grafenwoehr and Hohenfels. CYSS staff focuses on programs and activities that build leadership skills encourage volunteerism and prepare youth for college and careers. A Technology Lab/ Homework Instructor is on staff to assist youth in developing computer skills and educational research skills as well as

help with homework. Youth Centers are equipped with game tables, large screen TV’s and a wide variety of games; making it a great place to “hang out” with friends. In Grafenwoehr, our EDGE! program offers innovative programming in partnership with Family and MWR facilities after school. HIRED! is an apprenticeship program that gives youth job skills they need to be successful as they enter the work world. Youth Sports & Fitness relies on volunteer coaches to offer team sports. In addition to team sports, Youth Sports & Fitness offers skills camps and individual sports and fitness activities. Many of the health and fitness activities are offered in the CDCs, SACs and Youth Centers, so parents don’t have to transport children to another activity. CYSS Parent & Outreach Service coordinates special openings at Unit request for Unit functions, FRG meetings, respite, deployment support services and Kids on Site. Parent & Outreach Services include Central Enrollment Registration, Youth Education and Support Services (YESS) and SKIES Unlimited (Schools of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration and Skills). SKIES Unlimited contracts with instructors to offer classes in four Schools: Arts, Recreation and Leisure; Academic Skills, Mentoring and Intervention; Life Skills, Citizenship and Leadership; and Sports, Fitness and Health. Whether your child is interested in Ballet, Taekwon-Do or Yoga, SKIES Unlimited has something for every child and youth.

All CYSS programs use the “Character Counts!” curriculum to teach children the six pillars of character; trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. These concepts are integrated into every area of the curriculum in each of our programs. Parent involvement is key to the success of any program for children and youth. CYSS involves parents through Parent Advisory Councils and other committees. Parents can earn “participation points” that can accumulate toward fee discounts in our programs. CYSS also offers Parent Education classes on a variety of topics. CYSS encourages all parents to register with Parent Central Services and take advantage of the many programs and services for children and youth in our community.

Library turns locals into literacy stars By Mark Iacampo, USAG Hohenfels Public Affairs HOHENFELS, Germany −Libraries around the country feature posters of well-known celebrities such as Orlando Bloom, Hilary Swank and even the cast of “The Hunger Games” encouraging others to read, but here in Hohenfels, these celebrities share wall space with local community members also promoting literacy. Participants are chosen through a written contest where they explain in 200 words or less why they feel they should be on a READ poster. “I’m looking for a love of reading, but more than that, a desire to share that love,” said Nan H. Barker, garrison library director. “The goal is to encourage literacy and reading, not just in kids, but in adults and Soldiers as well.” Of the 40 entrants, 10 were chosen, depicting a wide range of Hohenfels readers, from kindergarteners, to Soldiers and teachers. Winners were then photographed by the Joint Multinational Readiness Center Combat Camera team, the Vipers, who created unique posters based on the participants reading preferences. “The whole project was really cool,” said Staff Sgt. Ian C. Mosher. “Everybody had fun with it because it was outside the normal realm of what we do.” Mosher photographed Patrick Williams appears totally Patrick Williams immersed in his graphic novel world on his READ poster at the who is pictured Hohenfels Library. reading a graphic Poster by Staff Sgt. A comic book fan himself, Mosher morphed his model into a cartoon version of himself. “The Vipers did such a tremendous job of matching the kids and the books they like to the background of the poster. They are just wonderful,” 16
Barker said. “Everybody got to get a little creative about it, do some research, and figure out what technique they wanted to use,” said Mosher. Thirdgrader Mia McCutcheon’s poster features her reading “Thea Stilton and the Mystery in Paris” from her favorite series “Geronimo Stilton.” McCutcheon wears a French beret with an Mia McCutcheon seems to dream image of the of Paris while reading a book from Eiffel Tower the Geronimo Stilton series. behind her. “I Poster by Spc. Evagelia Grigiss: got that hat from Paris,” she said. “We bought it on the Eiffel Tower.” McCutcheon said she enjoys following in the footsteps of her literary hero. “The little kids have more fun with it,” said Spc. Mia Parker about the photo sessions with the winners. “(McCutcheon) was adorable, a great model, and (Madison Finch) was so full of personality it was ridiculous. I’d work with her again in a second.” Bennett Schmid, also in third grade, said he enjoyed the photo shoot though it felt “a little scary at first.” He said he really enjoys going into the library and seeing his poster there. “My sister Annan won this contest before, years ago,” he said. “So I really wanted to be in it.” Schmid’s favorite authors included Roald Dahl (“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”) C.S. Lewis (Narnia series) and Dr. Seuss. “I think kids should read because it’s fun for your brain,” Schmid said.

Celebrate the Holiday Season in Germany and visit a traditional German Christmas M arket German Christmas markets date back to the 14th century. The fairs used to provide only food and practical supplies for the cold winter season. Nowadays the markets have become a beloved holiday tradition and a great way to get into the Christmas spirit. They open on Thanksgiving weekend and close down right after Christmas. The Christmas Markets are normally placed in the town square and medieval castles. You can stroll through festively decorated and illuminated streets, take rides on old-fashioned carousels, buy handmade traditional Christmas decoration, listen to German Christmas carols and enjoy the local cuisine. You will discover that the tempting aromas, festive glows, all the wonderful sounds of the season and the most delicious yuletide treat appealing to every one of your senses.
Here is a list of German Holiday season treats that you should not miss: • Stollen – traditional Christmas bread with dried fruits, nuts, spices, and sugar icing • Glühwein – mulled wine, a hot spiced wine • Nürnberger Rostbratwürste - small charcoal-grilled Nuremberg sausages • Lebkuchen - gingerbread biscuits • Bratäpfel - baked apples • Gebrannte Mandeln – roasted almonds • Maronen – roasted chestnuts • Marzipanbrot – „Marzipan Bread“, a big piece of Marzipan, shaped like a loaf of bread Let us introduce you to four prominent and very different Christmas markets: 1. Munich. It is located at the Marienplatz, in the center of the old town and a great place to buy traditional Bavarian wood carvings and glass crystals. Enjoy the free traditional Christmas concerts that are held every day at 5.30 p.m. on the balcony of Munich’s town hall, while children can enjoy arts, crafts and cookie baking inside the building. 2. Dresden. It is considered one of the oldest Christmas market in Germany, dating back to 1434. Dresden’s Christmas market is famous for having the world’s biggest nutcracker and a huge Christmas pyramid, a 45 feet high wooden carousel
with life-sized angels and scenes from the nativity. The culinary highlight of this Christmas market is “Stollen”, a traditional Christmas cake. 3. Nuremberg. It dates back to the year 1628 and endured even throughout Germany’s toughest times. It takes place on the main square (Hauptmarkt) in the heart of the old town. One highlight of this Christmas Market is its opening celebration, when the Christmas Angel, played by a local girl, reads out a prologue from the balcony of the Nuremberg Cathedral. Stroll through the 180 traditionally decorated huts that the locals fondly call “our little town of wood and cloth”, and make sure to try the little Nuremberg Bratwursts and some “Lebkuchen”, gingerbread cookies. 4. Berlin. It is home to 60 different Christmas markets, but for the connoisseur, the historic Christmas market at the Gendarmenmarkt, is not to be missed. Framed by the illuminated French and German Cathedral, you can wander the many booths or visit the heated craftsmen tent where you can watch toy makers, goldsmiths, and wood carvers at work. If you can’t get enough of the holiday spirit, visit Berlin’s Christmas markets at Alexanderplatz, Unter den Linden, Potsdamer Platz, or the Hanukkah Market at the Jewish Museum.

About this unique, rural experience … • The beds are arranged in one ‘bunkhouse’ style sleeping room. Like an ‘Alpine Hut’, mattresses are side by side in long rows, three tiers high and can be divided into male and female sleeping areas. You need to bring your linens (i.e. sheets, pillows) • The large common room has a rustic fireplace and holds up to 75 persons. The outside patio and lawn area can host a few hundred more. There are tables and chairs for 30 persons and additional fest tables and benches. • You find separate washrooms and showers as well as toilets for males and females next to the bunk room and the main entry way. We will provide the toilet paper; you need to bring the toiletries and towels. • The Lodge is equipped with a large kitchen including a commercial grade stove, two large refrigerators and a serve-through counter. Although there are some cooking utensils, plates and cutlery, it is best to bring your own, and don’t forget cleaning solution. Two large commercial grade barbeque grills are outside for your use. • You will find brooms, dustpans, mops and buckets to clean the Lodge. There is a mop room with water and even a garden hose. A large dumpster is located behind the facility.
Kean’ s Lodge - a fun place to relax Sitting above the Artillery Kaserne on the Kramer Mountain, the Kean’s Lodge is a rustic bunkhouse with extensive grounds. It is no frills but is, hands down, the best bet for groups coming to Garmisch-Partenkirchen for outdoor adventures. Tucked away in its own secluded valley, the Kean’s Lodge has plenty of outdoor room for games, barbeques, sledding, and hiking in a beautiful alpine oasis. On cold winter nights the fireplace inside will give you heat to warm up after a long ski day and, year round, we hope you enjoy having bonfires outside in the new pit we have constructed. The Kean’s Lodge can be booked for overnight lodging or daily use, for official functions such as military training and for private events by authorized personnel, units, and activities located within or visiting our community.

... repeats as winner in the Large BOSS Category for Best Installation & Best Event Awards The Best Event Award went to the “Get Grabbed” by BOSS Trips. Since the program’s introduction in February, the community has experienced a significant reduction in the number of single Soldiers engaging in at risk behavior. Designed to negate/reduce at risk behavior our single Soldier community often engage in, the trips are better known by soldiers for taking them to different, fun and challenging places throughout Germany. BOSS completed eight trips so far and new trips are planned for the coming months - come check out this award winning program! The Best Installation Award was presented for the 3 Pillar Exhibit. The BOSS Program showed how the pillars are effectively used throughout our Garrison with a video production and a display made by the USAG Grafenwoehr BOSS Counsel and Grafenwoehr Marketing Team. - The Community Service Pillar was alive with the work BOSS has done with CYSS Sport Programs, Heritage Months, MWR Special Events set-up and tear-downs and work with the Red Cross. - The Recreation Pillar was shown with all the trips BOSS provided to Soldiers. The Soldiers have taken full advantage of them; we went to Berlin, Switzerland, Belgium and Croatia. - The Quality of Life Pillar was shown by all the things available for Soldiers to take advantage of to enhance their life experience living here in Germany (i.e. AAFES Exchange, Food Court, BOSS Meetings, Training Opportunities and BOSS Summit).
