Some very exciting things are coming your way soon! There are some bright spots in the gloom of sequestration! In the coming months look forward to the grand-opening and ribbon cutting of the Outdoor Recreation Complex; the opening of Rosalia’s Italian Pastaria; and, the makeover of the Patton Fireside Lounge into the Bavaria Stub’l! We will also be rolling out the Chief of Staff of the Army Sports Program, an initiative to maximize Soldier participation and grow intramural programs. I am pleased to report that Family and MWR programs and services will not be negatively impacted by the furlough – our doors will be open. Additionally, Child, Youth and School Services (CYSS) programs are prepared to expand service in an effort to mitigate the impact of the Department of Defense Schools (DoDDS) furlough on parents and children. CYSS also has authority to offer a 20% furlough related discount for eligible regular full-day and regular part-day customers.

Theater Jargon ~ Explained By Rebekah Madden

Theater speaks its own language. Backstage, we hear theater words tossed around quite a bit—but do you really know what you are hearing? We’ll attempt to simplify the geek speak by taking out all the mystery.

Property aka PROP

All physical items on stage with the exception of the scenery. This would include lamps, chairs, pens, paper, books and all manner of such things. Heavier items such as sofas, desks, etc., are really more a part of the scenery.

Cyclorama

A curved wall at the back of the stage upon which light can be thrown to create effects – many times to simulate the sky. Also called a “cyc.”

Skrim

A loosely woven material used on stage, often to represent glass or some other transparent substance.

Barn Door

A device fitted into the gel frame holder of a lighting instrument consisting of four pieces. Used to direct or focus the light beam.

Boom

A vertical pipe with a heavy base to which lighting instruments may be attached.

Teaser

The long, horizontal flat or piece of cloth hung above the stage behind the main curtain and which, in combination with the vertical tormentors, forms a false or inner proscenium. Do these words sound familiar? Have you been acting on stage or behind the scenes? New people are always welcome.

The U.S. Army Ready and Resilient campaign is a collection of comprehensive and farreaching programs designed to guide the Army’s efforts to build physical, emotional and psychological resilience in our Soldiers, Families and civilians and directly enhance personal and unit readiness. To ensure the health and well-being of the entire team, the Army’s goal is to invest in and improve the performance of every individual on the team. The United States Army remains engaged in the longest period of combat operations in our nation’s history. The all-volunteer force has repeatedly shown amazing strength, skill and performance. Finally, through this campaign, the Army will work to reduce barriers and stigma associated with seeking help and will promote healthy lifestyles based on the performance triad of physical fitness, nutrition, and sleep. The campaign’s success requires engaged leadership at all levels, a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach, and effective prioritization of resources.

What is Ready?

The ability to accomplish assigned tasks or missions through resilience, individual and collective team training, and leadership.

What is Resilient?

The mental, physical, emotional, and behavioral ability to face and cope with adversity, adapt to change, recover, learn and grow from setbacks.

What’s Different?

The campaign integrates and synchronizes multiple efforts and programs to improve the readiness and resilience of the Army Family - Soldiers (Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard), Army Civilians and Families. Ready and Resilient creates a holistic, collaborative and coherent enterprise to increase individual and unit readiness and resilience. Ready and Resilient will build upon physical, emotional and psychological resilience in our Soldiers, Families and Civilians so they improve performance to deal with the rigors and challenges of a demanding profession.

Why Is It Important?

• A healthy mind and body are essential to individual and unit readiness • Resilience combines mental, emotional, and physical skills to generate optimal performance (i.e. readiness) - in combat, healing after injury, and in managing work and home life • Resilient individuals are better able to bounce back and overcome adversity by leveraging mental and emotional skills and behavior by seeking out training • Individual resilience can be built, maintained, and strengthened when viewed as an enduring concept and acquired through regular training SOURCE: Photo & text excerpt from U.S. Army Ready and Resilient website ... www.army.mil/readyandresilient/ and U.S. Army STAND TO! website ... http://www.army.mil/standto/archive_2013-03-13/

Among the new amenities are a high ropes course, indoor climbing facility, sensory playground, paintball and recreational activity fields, equipment checkout, classrooms/ conference rooms, snack bar, camp sites with a shower house and recreational shelters, cabins, picnic area, boat dock and much more. The high ropes course is a two-part course, east of the main camp site, with an 11-meter-high area designed for Soldiers’ training only. The second area or public area contains three levels of ropes ranging from 4 to 9 meters high. Once harnessed participants will be able to swing, ascend, traverse and balance their way across obstacles. By Sharron McKinney, Hohenfels School Liaison Officer Q: Why is it a good idea to get children involved in the move to the new duty location? A: It helps the child learn about the new duty station and what kinds of activities they will be able to participate in. Q: Why is a positive attitude about the move beneficial? A: Attitudes are contagious, and a positive attitude will help the child make a better adjustment. Q: Where can I find information on a specific state’s educational requirements? A: The Education Resource Center at www.militarychild.org is a comprehensive, onestop shop for answers regarding the educational requirements of the state where you are moving.

School Quest is offered by the Military Child Education Coalition and the website is www.schoolquest.org Q: Why is community involvement important for high school students? A: High school students need to be part of their community, and some high schools now require up to 300 hours of volunteer service to graduate. Q: Why should I pick challenging course loads? A: This will help to ensure a smooth transition during the middle school and high school years. The Military Child Education Coalition offers a workshop and provides a transition packet for grades 7-12 called “Chart Your Course”.
