Erzgebirge:
The Source of Wooden German Folk Art http://www.saxongifts.com/History-of-Erzgebirge_ep_38-1.html
The Erzgebirge region is located in the eastern portion of Germany that borders the Czech Republic. The area is known also as the Ore Mountains. The region grew from its mining industry but today is widely known for producing wooden German Folk Art. Nutcrackers, Smokers, Christmas Pyramids, Blumenkinder and Schwibboegen are produced in the areas workshops in the town of Seiffen and it’s surrounding villages. The Erzgebirge is the source of some of the most beautiful wooden articles in the world. A combination of historical, geographic and economic factors joined together to make this possible. The Erzgebirge has an abundant supply of wood, 60% of the area is covered with forests. Because wood is abundant, it was a very natural thing that the first products to come out of this area were wooden products. About the 17th Century, simple toys began to appear – little tops, jumping jacks and other handmade articles. It is known that as early as 1750, toys from this area were sold at the Christmas fairs in some of the big cities in Germany. It is also known that there were toy salesman who went from village to village
offering their toys and because they couldn’t carry samples with them, they carried a book called a “Toy Sample Book” (or Toy Model Book) similar to a catalog. As time passed, the pieces became more sophisticated. They reflected the lives of the people of the area, the hard life of the miners and the dangerous conditions of the dark, damp mines. The articles also reflect the longing of the people for warmth, light, safety and hope. Today in the Erzgebirge Mountains, the tradition of creating beautiful wooden folk art lives on. In villages like Seiffen, Olbernau, Schneeberg and Gruenhainichen, hundreds of dedicated and skilled people continue to create. It is very interesting to visit this area today, and perhaps the most characteristic village is Seiffen where there’s a museum, which attracts thousands of visitors annually. Join Outdoor Recreation on a Day Trip to one of Bavaria’s Christmas Markets and you’ll be sure to see some of the great wooden German Folk Art made in the Erzgebirge region! 11
Bullying
Prevention Month Join us as we celebrate Bullying Prevention Month in October by bringing awareness among Soldiers, Families, Civilians and Retirees. The Bavaria Military Community (BMC) and the Department of Defense Dependents School (DoDDS) Europe Bavaria District are committed to making our community and schools safe, caring, and welcoming places for all our children and youth. We will treat each other with respect, and we will refuse to tolerate bullying in any form in our community or our schools. Many of the children in our community have a parent that is currently deployed. Therefore, it is vitally important to ensure that our students feel safe both in and out of schools. During the month of August, Family and MWR held a Youth Center Design & Win contest asking Youth to submit a cover design with the theme “Bullying Prevention Month. We would like to thank all of the Youth that submitted artwork for the contest. Your contributions were greatly appreciated and make a significant, positive impact on the entire military community! Take a moment to appreciate some of the designs that were submitted by the Youth at the Netzaberg and Rose Barracks Youth Centers.

Thrive at the Youth Centers
Start the school year with new friends and exciting activities at one of the Bavaria Military Community Youth Centers! Youth Centers offer trips, dances, lock-ins, clubs, games, sports, great food and a chance to hang out with friends after school and on weekends. Designed especially for Youth grades 6th through 12th, our goal is to provide fun, interactive and age appropriate activities that focus on the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of middle school and teen Youth. Through targeting these developmental areas, participating Youth experience achievement and recognition, leadership and friendship, as well as positive direction for their endeavors following high school. Registration with CYSS and the Youth Center is fast, simple, and most importantly free. Upon the completion of the short registration form, new Youth will receive a login swipe card and a tour of the facility. Youth new to the community, or that will soon be PCSing to our community, may take part in the Youth 14
Sponsorship Program. The program is designed to provide new Youth with a Youth Sponsor; a Youth who is more experienced with the Youth Center and familiar with the community. The goal is to provide an opportunity to meet new friends both before and on arrival to the community in order to become familiar and comfortable with the changes of a PCS move. During the school year, the Youth Center offers daily homework assistance, in which Youth have access to a Homework Lab that provides quiet surroundings, study materials and access to the internet. A Homework Lab Technician is available to assist with homework assignments. The center also provides free access to the website www.tutor. com; a service that connects students with certified teachers via live chat who specialize in various subject areas. Youth are offered a program called Power Hour, a point-based system that allows them to earn and store points based on completing assignments in the center. They are recognized and receive various small prizes, with the option to cash in points for special events such as pizza parties and bowling parties. Youth Center staff offer a snack each afternoon, all of which is free. Food is broken
into three categories of large, small, and drinks. Youth may choose among a variety of options, including Hot Pockets, mini pizzas, chicken nuggets, granola bars, cheese sticks, fresh fruit and yoghurt.
The Technology Lab conducts many activities involving graphic arts and video production. One of the most popular tools is the use of our Green Screen Technology for video production activities. Youth learn how to setup the equipment, film, upload and edit projects. Some additional Technology Lab programs include astronomy, web site design, and robotics.
Talent and opportunity is not limited to technological activities, however. The Arts & Crafts room is open daily in which Youth may participate in scheduled activities or simply bring their own idea to life. Youth are routinely informed of and entered into art contests for Boys & Girls MWRLINK
The Netzaberg Youth Center has a large Multi-Purpose Room, known to Youth simply as the gym. While this room is utilized for special events such as dances, the intention is to provide a safe indoor environment for Youth to participate in the daily sport and fitness activities the center offers. Basketball tops the popularity poll for daily activities; yet weekly volleyball, hockey and dodge ball games are available. For the warmer months, all Youth Centers have an outdoor basketball area as well as a small skate park.
Some of the more recreational and less structured activities include a variety of table top games such as Ping Pong, Air Hockey, Fuss-ball and Billiards Pool. Furthermore, the center is host to a Game Room, which allows Youth to sign out and play the most current video games for Xbox 360, PS3, and Nintendo Wii. One of the most popular recreational activities taking place in the center is the Magic the Gathering card your community connection
game. Magic the Gathering combines collectable cards with strategy. Known as one of the oldest collectable card game, the activity allows Youth to build decks out of cards and play games against other Youth that challenge critical thinking and decision making skills. Youth are encouraged to play and compete for prize packs in monthly tournaments. Leadership and community service is an essential part of the Youth Centers programming. The center offers leadership based clubs that focus on community service and special projects. These include Keystone Club, Torch Club, 4-H and Club Tech. Each club focuses on a goal and works to achieve the goal after a set period of time. Examples of some activities the clubs put together include gardening and area beautification, as well as organizing toy donation drives for nearby orphanages. In addition to the larger clubs, the center hosts smaller clubs which are more activity specific, such as Passport to Manhood (Boys only) and Smart Girls (Girls only). Each covers topics and issues more relevant to the gender and coming of age. Work-force preparation through the Hired program is operated out of the
Netzaberg Youth Center as well. The Hired program gives high school Youth ages 15-18 the opportunity to prepare for the highly competitive job market. Participants learn valuable work-force skills through hands-on work and training. Youth are required to complete 180 hours over a period of 12 weeks. Upon completion Youth are rewarded with a $500 stipend. Youth that continue to participate in the Hired program will be rewarded with increasing stipend amounts. Apprentice job preference is taken into great consideration, and participants may initially choose between a large range of positions; including but not limited to child care and administrative work.
Last, but not least, the Youth work with staff to plan trips to exciting locations throughout Europe. Youth trips are a great way to experience the European culture with friends.
child, youth & school services
Club of America and 4-H, in which they are eligible to win various prizes. Art designed by Youth is displayed around the center. Paintings, jewelry making, clay sculpting and pottery design have been among the most popular arts & crafts activities.
While the center offers both structured and unstructured activities, every room and activity is staffed providing control and supervision, creating a safe environment for youth to enjoy their afternoon and early evenings.

Winterize Your Car
By Catalina Victoria, USAG Grafenwoehr Family and MWR Marketing
With record high temperatures experienced throughout the summer in Bavaria, you may overlook the fact that the winter months are approaching us once again. The fall season is the perfect time to start preparing our vehicles for safe winter driving. The Automotive Skills Centers have tools, equipment and the skilled staff needed to assist you with preparing your vehicle for winter weather conditions. There are several components of a vehicle that should be inspected to get your vehicle winter ready.
either winter tires or all season M/S (mud and snow) tires in preparation for snow/ ice-covered roads. Winter tires, marked with a snowflake, have treads and a rubber mix that help it grip cold roads better than all-season tires, especially at temperatures below 44 degrees Fahrenheit. All season tires with M/S designation on the side are considered acceptable for winter driving. While all season tires are allowed, they still might not protect the driver from getting a ticket for not having proper winter tires in the event of an accident.
Windshield Wipers & Fluid
Drivers should ensure that their vehicles have a good pair of wipers installed. Worn out wipers can be a hazard as they will not be as effective during rain or snowy conditions. It is also important to use a windshield fluid that will not freeze over starting at the end of September before the freezing starts.
Lights
Be sure all of the lights on your vehicle are in working order. These include the high beams, head lights, day lights, fog lights, brake lights and tail lights. Properly functioning lights are important so that your visibility is not affected. Shop staff can advise on how to clean your headlights if they are yellowed, for better lighting.
Drivers should also check the tread and air pressure on their tires. These two factors determine how much traction the tires will have to properly grip the road. The treads on a tire control the stopping power of the car. Low tread levels can make a vehicle very dangerous to drive and cause tires to slide. To avoid this ensure that your tires have a tread depth of at least 3 millimeters. You also need to check that the tires are properly inflated. The last thing you want to happen in the winter time is to be caught on the side of the road changing a flat tire. Finally, be sure to check your spare tire for proper inflation as well.
Antifreeze
Tires

12 Days of Christmas
By Catalina Victoria, USAG Grafenwoehr Family and MWR Marketing
Bring your Soldier some Holiday cheer by sending them a package filled with 12 gifts to count down till Christmas. The Arts & Crafts Centers have lots of materials you can use to create an out-of-this world Holiday Care Package that your Soldier will never forget!
Sharing the Holiday Spirit with the Children
If you have children, involve them in selecting (or creating) the gifts and in wrapping them. This can be a fun holiday project that reminds the children that even though their deployed parent is not with them, they can still share in the Holiday spirit.
be sure to include them in the scrapbook. A great way to involve children in this gift is to have them dress up in their favorite Christmas outfit and pose for a photo to send to their parent. Check out all of the scrapbooking materials available at the Arts & Crafts center. If you are new to scrapbooking you can also attend a class to learn great tips and tricks from staff members.
Here are some gift ideas for the 12 Days of Christmas: 12 – Twelve Cookies in a Can Recycle a Pringles Can by using it to package your Soldier’s favorite homemade cookies. Simply cut a fabric square to 9.5” by 9.25,” spray it with an adhesive, and wrap around the outside of the can. You can also use a glue gun to attach the fabric to the can. The Arts & Crafts Center has many Holiday fabric patterns to choose from, so you’ll be sure to find one you love! Be sure to fit at least 12 cookies in the can. Keep in mind the diameter of the can when baking the cookies. 11 – Eleven Family Pictures in a Scrapbook Create a small scrapbook with 11 pictures of the Family. If you have children or pets, 22
10 – Ten Reasons You Love Your Soldier Decorate a Christmas stocking with your Soldier’s name. You can sew on the name or glue it on with some glitter. Fill it with ten notes that say why you love your Soldier. 9 – Nine Hershey’s Kisses Pack nine Hershey’s Kisses neatly with brown packing paper. Tie a nice holiday ribbon or some twine around the gift. At the Arts & Crafts Center, you’ll find some great ribbon selections. The best part is you can purchase the ribbon by the foot so you won’t be left with a large roll of ribbon you won’t be using.
MWRLINK
7 – Seven Packs of Water Flavoring They’ll be thanking you for spicing up their water! 6 – Six Packs of Gum 5 – Five Letters from Family and Friends Nothing will make your Soldier feel more loved than knowing that their Family and friends are thinking about them during the Holidays.
DVD’s or Blu-Ray’s before purchasing the movies. 2 – Two Fingerless Crochet Gloves If you don’t know how to crochet, this is the perfect starter project! Create a pair of fingerless gloves in your Soldier’s favorite color to keep them warm during the winter months. The Arts & Crafts Centers offer crochet classes that can help you get started! You’ll also find all of the materials you’ll need for the project. 1 – One Christmas Decoration Check out the Christmas decorations available at your local Arts & Crafts Center. These decorations are made in house, so you’ll be sure to have something unique for your Soldier.
community recreation
8 – Eight Blank Holiday Cards Send your Soldier eight blank Holiday Cards so that they can send their Family and friends back home wishes for the holidays. You can purchase a pack of blank cards, or make your own unique cards. Scrapbooking materials and cardstock paper would be the optimal tools for homemade cards.
That’s all folks!
4 – Four Boxes of Candy Canes Let your Soldier share in the Holiday spirit by sending them a whole lot of candy canes to share with their battle buddies. 3 – Three Movies Send your Soldier three movies that they have not been able to watch because of the deployment. Check with your Soldier to see if they have the capability of playing your community connection
Once you have got your twelve gifts you’ll want to number each gift so that the Soldier knows which one to open on the corresponding day. You can use some scrapbook paper or print out numbers from your computer to number the gifts. Have some fun decorating the box!
Shipping the Care Package
Don’t forget that the care package will take some time to be delivered to your Soldier. Check with your local post office if you are unsure of when to ship your package. And plan for the package to arrive by December 13! 23

Garmisch Get Fit for the Ski Season with “Fitness on the Snow” The importance of preparing for the slopes before you start skiing or riding is paramount. Being in shape will not only reduce chances of getting hurt, but will also help you to become a better skier. The fitter you are, the easier it is to improve your technique. Being more efficient, you will be able to out-ski many other skiers, even those younger ones with cool equipment. - Working on your cardiovascular fitness This will ensure that you have enough stamina to last an entire day on the slopes. Many skiers end up injuring themselves as they become more and more tired. Don’t forget that being in good cardio shape means to be able to hike to your own places with untouched powder. What a joy to have a little part of the mountain all to yourself. - Building up your ski-specific muscles To help you ski to the best of your ability and for as long as possible, you will need to work on building your ski-specific muscles. The important muscles that need to be in peak condition when you hit the slopes include your quadriceps, calves, gluts and body’s core muscles.
- Improving your balance and flexibility Balance is a fundamental feature inherent in the skiing or boarding movements, you are constantly moving in and out of a balanced position as you progress down the slope. Flexibility basically refers to the ability of your muscle-connective tissues to extend without compressing your joints and potentially causing real damage. The tendons and ligaments that surround your joints need to be strong and flexible if you wish to avoid injuries while skiing. The program runs in two phases: First phase, December 2 - 20, Mondays and Wednesdays, the indoor circuit sessions prepares you to ski hard from the very first day of the season. The second phase starts January 6 and runs to February 26. On Mondays you’ll apply your ski skills in different terrain and snow conditions on the hill. On Wednesdays we’ll remain indoors for conditioning training. We added a little competitive accent to motivate you to become a stronger skier. During the 3 month program you’ll be collecting badges in three different categories: - Participation in ski conditioning - 2 badges per class - Most vertical meters walked moving uphill (touring or snowshoeing) - 5 badges per 200 vertical meters - Participation in outdoor sessions - 2 badges per class Cost: $55 for indoor conditioning; $85 for indoor conditioning with six 90 min sessions on the hill. All classes start at 8:30 a.m. Outdoor sessions conducted by certified fitness and ski instructor. Mueller Fitness Center, Bldg. 119, Sheridan Kaserne DSN 440-2747, CIV 08821-750-2747
