Cossack cemetery with Cossack memorial chapel
About 40,000 Cossacks allied with the German Empire and originating from the Don- and Caucasus-regions fled in May 1945 from northern Italy to Osttirol. The extradition to the Soviet Union threatened them with death or exile in Siberia. Nevertheless, they became – whether men, women or children – interned and finally handed out by British troops to the Red Army. Only a few managed the escape. The dramatic incidents surround-
ing this deportation placed Osttirol for the first and only time in a setting of world history. The Cossack cemetery in the Peggetz near Lienz and the memorial stone to the Ataman of all Cossacks, General Helmuth von Pannwitz, in Tristach, are still reminiscent of the so-called “Tragedy on the Drava”. Memorial chapel open on request. Mrs. Erika Pätzold, Tel. +43 4852 64475

The cultural association “s’ Kammerland - Kulturinitiative Thurn” was founded in 2001 and since then has been endeavoring to renovate and maintain the 500year-old listed farm house – which represents in its authenticity a unique rural treasure. Through the restoration of the interiors, facades and balconies as well as the wooden shingles of the roof and the reconstruction of the small farmers garden, the Kammerlanderhof regained its authentic appearance. Particularly worth seeing are the original smokers kitchen, the granary with old equipment and grain chests and a small bedroom with furniture of the century turning around 1900. At the attic, a theme-exhibition (cobbler workshop, Machlkammer, linen production and processing) provides insights into historic farming craftswork. The room is also used as a cozy hub for social gatherings and smaller events such as poetry readings. Opening times 2022: see www.kammerlandmuseum.jimdo.com Special guided tours by appointment: Raimund Mußhauser Tel. +43 676 9331200 Price: € 5,00; kids free. www.kammerlandmuseum.jimdo.com

Burg Heinfels
Heinfels Castle was completely restored from 2016 to 2020. It is the most extensive castle complex of Osttirol and the Puster Valley. The travel writer Beda Weber described Heinfels as a queen who raises up into the air. In fact, the high castle sits enthroned on a striking rock 1130m above sea level. Heinfels is a sight, museum and event location. The museum extends over an internal and external area of 1000 m² and offers an overall experience of historical masonry, wonderful views and a history that has been brought to life. Narrow guards walkways and round towers alternate with wide panoramic views. Modern architecture makes the ruins accessible and even the highest tower for those that are free from giddiness. Visitors of Heinfels are accompanied only by trained cultural mediators. A chapter of Heinfels‘ eventful stories is told in every castle chamber and every hall ... with models of the castle, film and audio stations, photographs, original objects and animations. The journey through time begins with the founding legend of Heinfels, with the battle of the legendary giant Haunold against the Huns. It leads through everyday life at Heinfels, the geopolitical situation up to the storming of the castle during the peasant uprisings. Personal stories are also told, like those from the persecuted Hutterer - members of church reforming movement - as well as Thomas Hanns, the convicted murderer of the cook von Heinfels.
