For future events check out the website: www.mynsu.co.uk/vn Volunteer Northumbria is the Unions’ community volunteering programme. Last year our volunteers:

• Helped 700+ members of the local community through volunteering • Won regional and national awards • Appeared in newspapers, on radio AND television • Made friends. Gained skills. Had fun! Volunteer Northumbria is student led- that means YOU decide what happens and ALL our exciting projects are led by students! We supported 40+ organisations last year including:

“Being a volunteer for VN is the best thing that happened to me throughout my months living in England!!” Jeremy Chang, Student Volunteer

“I now work for the organization that I volunteered for through VN, so I would not have my current job (which I LOVE!) if I hadn’t volunteered” Kirsty

COURSE REPS

SO You’re at University and you want to make changes on your course, right? Things are great, but could be better? Becoming a Course Rep is an awesome way to meet everyone on your course, the staff in your School, and make the changes that you and your peers really want to see. Course Reps regularly meet with University staff to talk about the course and how it can be improved. And it’s a great way to get things done. You speak to the people on your course about what they like and what could be improved, and let the school know through meetings, then you tell everyone about all the greatt work you’ve done. Sound good? We’ll throw in the training you need, too, because we’re good like that. www.mynsu.co.uk/coursereps

POSTGRADUATE TAUGHT REPS These are School Reps, but for students who are doing a Masters (or equivalent) course. PGT Reps are new in the University as of 2009, and were created to fill what was seen as a gap in the representation system. www.mynsu.co.uk/pgt

SCHOOL REPS KEY So, maybe you’ve done the Course Rep thing. Maybe you did Welcome Week. Now you want something to really get your teeth into. School Reps are to Course Reps what Course Reps are to students. Like a pyramid, see? School Reps take the best ideas and the biggest problems from Course Reps and present them to the University and the Students’ Union. Because there are around 22 School Reps at any given time they tend to be a pretty tight team, and have regular catch ups every month with the Students’ Union to share what they’ve been up to. You really have quite a lot of flexibility in this role, and there is no limit to what you can achieve, and what’s even better is we’ll give you £300 annually for your efforts. And you won’t be alone! You’ll have at least one other Rep in your School to share the load. Turn over to see a laid bare interview with our top two School Reps

BEST REASON TO GET INVOLVED: Three years of a degree goes over amazingly quickly. Getting involved makes for a great experience, both on your CV and socially its loads of fun. Nothing will replace those memories and benefits!

10

www.mynsu.co.uk

INSIDE INFO: Get a blackberry! With lots of meetings to attend it’s important to check emails to see where you have to be and when! It’s great to keep in contact with other students, and to keep appointments. MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT: Drinking too much wine at karaoke with the course reps and dancing to C’est La Vie by B*Witched! This is never a clever idea; they never looked at me in the same way again! BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT: Representing students in Parliament! Going to the House of Commons to represent Northumbria’s students was an honour. BEST REASON TO GET INVOLVED: Meeting so many new students and other School Reps is fantastic! It’s a great way to boost your confidence and the School Reps ALWAYS have the best nights out together!

COMMUNITY REPS JOIN THE TEAM OF NORTHUMBRIA COMMUNITY REPS, NATIONAL WINNERS OF THE COMMUNITY RELATIONS AWARD FROM NUS!” WHO?

Community Reps are the team of students tasked with amazing responsibility! They’re there to represent students in the areas and work with the wider community, to show it’s not just about traffic cones and throwing up in your neighbour’s garden. Students bring a lot to Newcastle. So go out there and prove it! Get the role, and you could have £100 in your bank every term, that’s £300 a year for being the face of students in your area.

WHAT?

You go out there and speak to students who live around you, meet important people, and talk through anything that comes up in your area. You’re in Morrisons all the time anyway, right? Community Reps are the main point of communication between what happens at the Students’ Union, on and off campus. You’ll get students involved and work with others in the community to show that students really are a force for positive change.

WHY?

We’ll give you some training (thinking about that CV...) and you’ll get the chance to do some mega-networking in your area, and in the University. You won’t be alone, either! Students’ Union staff are here to make sure you’ve got all the guidance and support you need. We have opportunities in Jesmond, Sandyford, Heaton, etc....all the big spots! Get involved today and visit www.mynsu.co.uk/community

EQUALITY GROUPS EQUALITY GROUPS & REPRESENTATIVES

Equality groups are here to ensure that everyone’s voice at Northumbria is heard and that people from similar backgrounds can work together on the issues important to them. Each group formed at Northumbria has an elected representative that sits on Student Council, the biggest decision making body in the Students’ Union, and has a big say on the way the Students’ Union is run. The groups work online through social networking, our website, and e-mail but also hold physical meetings on a regular basis to discuss issues in the university or wider community and campaigning activity. These groups hold their own budgets for the group to manage.

12

www.mynsu.co.uk

The current equality groups are: • Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) • Caring Responsibilities • Disabled • Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Trans (LGBT) • Mature • Women

As well as the six equality groups we also have an International Students Group which works in a similar manner. The International Students Group has three representatives however, one for EU students, one for Non-EU students, and a third open to any international student. To get involved in any of these or find out how you can become a rep visit www.mynsu.co.uk

ETHICS & ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITTEE PASSIONATE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT?

Want to make the world a bit greener? Come hang with the new and highly-anticipated Ethics and Environment Committee. Make some carbon-free footprints over to the Students’ Union and recycle some old debates to make new changes in the University. Saving polar bears has never looked so good on your CV!

SOUND IMPACT

Sound Environmental Impact is a national initiative which looks at how green a Students’ Union is. It was started by a former Northumbria student and the Ethics and Environment Committee can help improve the Union to achieve this award. We are at the Silver Standard and need your help to raise the game to Gold.

LOVE IT DIRTY?

The Greener Halls Campaign is all about making your halls more environmentally friendly. It’s part of a scheme we’ve picked up because we believe in clean living, and so do our students. Every one of the major Halls will need an Environmental Ambassador to play Captain Planet (uniform not included) and these Ambassadors will be directly involved in making changes to your Halls. Pretty good for the CV, and a firm way to make a stance about something you care about.

CAMPAIGNING The SU is a political organisation and our main reason for being here is to make sure “The Man” is listening to your voice. We do this through campaigning and speaking up for ourselves. Whilst there is less of the placard waving/megaphone blaring approach (although sometimes we do resort to that), we are always in need of a strong, student presence to go out there and campaign on the big issues affecting students which results in a change. People do listen and our campaigning has always had a positive impact on the lives of our students.

PAST CAMPAIGNS BY THE SU HAVE BEEN: • 24hour library - DONE • Anonymous Marking in more schools DONE • Library Open Over Easter - DONE • Greener Halls - DONE • SHAG Week - DONE • Plagiarism - DONE • 21 Day Assignment Feedback - DONE Be part of the student movement and have your voice heard, *long hair and hippie clothes optional* but keep an eye out for this years big campaigns and come and make a change. To be part of it contact su.enquiries@northumbria.ac.uk

STUDENT COUNCIL If Student Council was a person, it’d probably be Morgan Freeman. Old, wise, infinitely lovable, and a fan of penguins... What’s not to like? Anybody who wants to make a big change to the Students’ Union, or who wants the full weight of the Students’ Union’s support (on absolutely anything) can do it through Student Council. There are 30 positions in total, made up of various representatives from across the University. Absolutely ANY Northumbria student can join in the debate, propose a ‘motion’ (a one-page document stating the change you’d like to see - we can help you write it, don’t worry), or come along and watch what happens! Check out the dates for when it’s happening next year. Come along to the first one, you won’t be the only one, and you’ll definitely find something of interest. If you’ve had a taste of School Council, or another Union’s, or even if you have no experience at all, but would like to be involved (it’ll test your debating skills, public speaking, and look good on your CV), drop us a line at su.democracy@northumbria. ac.uk www.mynsu.co.uk/council

• 1 Halls Rep • 1 Sports Rep • 1 Environmental Rep • 1 Coach Lane Rep • 1 Postgraduate Taught Rep • 1 Postgraduate Research Rep • 1 Community Rep

POSITIONS AVAILABLE • 5 Sabbatical Officers • 5 “Lay Student” Councillors • 3 School Reps • 10 Equality Reps (Black and Minority Ethnic, Women, Disabled, Students with Caring Responsibilities, LGBT, PartTime, Mature, and 3 International Representatives)

19

SABBATICAL ELECTIONS DID YOU KNOW THAT 5 NORTHUMBRIA STUDENTS ARE THE HEAD OF YOUR SU?

They take a full year out of study, get paid £16,000 and given their own office to run the £3million organisation.

DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU CAN HAVE THIS JOB?

Any Northumbria student can run in the Annual Elections to become a Sabbatical Officer for a year. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to gain invaluable experiences that will leave you miles ahead above any other graduate. It’s a paid job and most courses will also accept it as your placement year (a paid one at that!).

HOW DO I APPLY?

You can nominate yourself from February, then when election week begins, you need to campaign to get other Northumbria students to vote you into the position. The person with the most votes gets the job. Simples. No interview required.

20

www.mynsu.co.uk

NUS CONFERENCE NUS IS JUST A DISCOUNT CARD, RIGHT?

Wrong. They are the massive body which represents you. Ever felt like you wanted you opinion to be heard nationally or you want something done on a bigger platform? NUS conference is an annual event (held at our very own Sage in Newcastle Gateshead) where students from every other University in the country meet to vote on what direction NUS (the National Union of Students) will follow. This can range from making sure NUS campaign against raising tuition fees, keeping hate crime off campus or simply ensuring democracy within the organisation.

SO YOU WANT TO ATTEND CONFERENCE, HOW DO YOU DO IT? You need to be elected to attend the conference as a delegate representing your University. It’s a similar process to the Sabbatical Elections. There are 8 places available for any Northumbria student to go. Simply get your other students to vote for you and you could have your place on Conference floor, voting on national issues. Look out for dates when NUS conference elections are being held.

THE BASE AMBASSADORS Calling all those who feel a tingle of passion about their SU. We need 8 Ambassadors to help build links with students in their academic Schools. Our latest volunteering role sees the Union recruiting 8 willing, charismatic individuals to help spread the word of the SU into the Schools of Northumbria. You must be willing to take on a challenge, able to talk to students and be passionate about your Students’ Union. In this role you will earn £100 per term expenses, but the enjoyment and gratification you will get will seriously outweigh the cash! If you are interested in being a Base Ambassador for this year, email su.enquiries@northumbria.ac.uk as we are recruiting now, and you’ll be contacted straight away.
