’day friends and fellow birdos and welcome to another jam-packed edition of your favourite Aussie bird mag. Boy is this year disappearing fast! For the Aussie aviculturists amongst us, I hope you’re all enjoying a great start to the breeding season. I have heard some good reports from across the country, though many are reporting a late start for some species. There’s a huge amount going on in the bird world at present, both here in Oz and across the Globe, with all signs pointing to the fact that we in the hobby as aviculturists need to continue to band together, standing as one to keep our industry strong. In order to give ourselves the best chance of growing and evolving our hobby, it is imperative that we keep working together. We need to stay one step ahead, which isn’t easy by any means as those groups whose hobbies revolve around being disruptive, and most often have a lack of knowledge of our hobby, are very well organised and extremely politically aware. So, what do we need to do? We also need to continue to be well organised and stay on top of our game, we need to continue to effectively self regulate and continue to demonstrate that we, as a collective, are responsible in terms of our management of the hobby and the care that we provide our feathered friends. And we need to continue to educate both others in our hobby and those outside of it and to help each other as a team; basically together we have strength in numbers. At present we, as a hobby collectively, are made up of many different groups from all corners of the globe, all working towards the same goals; let’s continue this, but in doing so come together and work as one, sharing our ideas, our knowledge and our strengths for the betterment of aviculture worldwide. Currently, as you can read about on pages 50-51, bird sales are under fire in Victoria and at the time of printing things are looking a little bleak for a workable solution unless enough pressure can be put on the minister in question to make amendments to the proposed new regulations and major ones at that…This is where power in numbers comes in; working together as a group is the only way to get our voice heard, and its great to see that this is happening as we speak. As long as such collaboration continues to happen and strengthen amongst both bird clubs,

peak bodies and individual breeders then our hobby is in safe hands. So, let’s continue to work even harder together towards our common goal and keep aviculture strong! I have been lucky to be involved in some very exciting projects of late, including the launch of Aviarylife in India as ASI Aviarylife, the new official journal of the Avian Society of India, which I am immensely proud of. It is a great privilege and pleasure to play a part in the growth of aviculture and education of aviculturists in India, a hugely diverse country in which our hobby is taking flight in at a rapid rate of knots! I was also recently back in Berlin, where I attended the annual International Spix’s Macaw Meeting at ACTP HQ; this was an enormously satisfying event to be a part of, as to me the Spix’s Macaw Recovery Project or Spix’s Macaw De-Extinction Project as it is now referred, is a jewel in the crown of aviculture, a project that gives hope for the survival of all species and has and continues to bring much needed attention to the plight of endangered birds and animals the world over – congratulations to all involved, keep up the incredible work! You can read more about this starting on page 6 of this issue. As usual, this issue is full to the brim with interesting and useful articles including pieces on Little Lorikeets, Black-headed Yellow Siskins, Orangebellied Parrots, Genetics, Eco Tourism and much more. So without further ado, I’ll let you get on and enjoy everything that this issue of Aviarylife has to offer Until next time, take care, stay happy and keep spreading the bird word! Cheers,

Simon
