The inspiration for The Wort Hotel originated with Charles J. Wort, a homesteader who arrived in Jackson Hole in 1893. Staking claim just outside modern day Jackson, Charles and his wife Luella gave birth to two sons; John in 1900 and Jess in 1903.
Although gambling has always been unlawful in Wyoming, it was tolerated for many years as a tourist amusement in resort destinations. The Wort offered a variety of gaming options, which moved underground and eventually ceased after outside pressures Since opening in and the postwar boom brought increased 1941, The Wort Hotel attention to this corner of the world.

In 1917, Charles bought four lots in downtown Jackson, Wyoming. For seven years, the land was used as a horse corral adjacent to a livery stable. From 1932 to 1940, the Wort family operated what is now Signal Mountain Lodge in Grand Teton National Park. Through the sale of this facility, the family financed construction of their dream; a luxury hotel in downtown Jackson, WY. Original construction costs were approximately $90,000, and the hotel officially opened in the late summer of 1941. In 1950 the famous Silver Dollar Bar was designed and built by a German cabinet maker to showcase 2,032 uncirculated Morgan Silver Dollars from the Denver mint.
Since opening in 1941, The Wort Hotel continues to be a favorite spot in downtown Jackson Hole for locals and visitors alike. Tragically, on the afternoon of August 5, 1980, the town watched in horror as columns of smoke and flames leaped from the hotel’s roof. A bird’s nest near a transformer had touched off one of the worst blazes in Jackson history. The fire burned in to the night, collapsing the roof and threatening an end to this historic landmark. But only days after the fire, a sign went up pronouncing “We’ll be back”. And so it was; in June 1981, The Wort Hotel reopened to community fanfare and a renewed commitment to every guest who walked through its doors. This year marks their 75th Diamond Anniversary. You can transfer your real estate into a limited liability company or family partnership and then put that into the dynasty trust, which can continue for a thousand years. As a result, multiple generations can make use of and enjoy the property, without having to pay estate taxes or worse, having to sell the property in order to pay the taxes. A key point to remember: The trust must be administered in Wyoming.

20 YEARS Old Bill’s Fun Run For Charities, the most innovative fundraiser in the nation, is celebrating 20 years. Over the past nineteen years, the event has helped local charities raise over $121 million and has touched the lives of thousands. Those dollars have helped house homeless pets, feed the hungry, teach our children and protect Jackson’s natural beauty. In 2015, our community raised an incredible $10,520,862, bringing the lifetime total funds raised up to $121 million. Jackson Hole Market Report The overall market in the first quarter of 2016 experienced a decrease in the number of transactions, down about 23% over the first quarter of 2015. While the number of transactions fell, the average and median sale prices continued to increase. The average sale price increased by about 14% and the median sale price increased about 25%, to $1,025,000. The increase in average and median sale prices can be attributed to supply and demand forces, and a shift in the price point of transactions, a trend experienced throughout 2015. Approximately 1/3rd of the transactions in the first quarter took place in the $1 million-$2 million range, up about 17% compared to the first quarter of last year. In contrast, the number of transactions under $500,000 fell over 50%, and transactions between $500,000 and $1 million were down nearly 30%.
