Mum Niamh seeking help for MS in Mexico By Michelle McGlynn
“I just want to be able to walk down the pier with the kids.” That is the simple wish Niamh McNally Doyle is hoping can become a reality after she travels to Mexico for groundbreaking MS treatment next year. Niamh, daughter of wellknown former Detective Garda Austin McNally, received the news that she has been accepted for stem cell treatment in Mexico just last week. Now Niamh, her husband Eric and children, Sophie (12) and twins Emily and Lauren (10) are busy trying to raise the €100,000 required to pay for the procedure and follow-up treatment. As this stem cell treatment, which has been used in the treatment of cancer for many years, is not available to Niamh in Ireland, she must travel
abroad. In Mexico, a team of specialists will harvest stem cells, and she will then receive chemotherapy which will bring her immune system down and then the harvested cells will be implanted. A facility in Russia would be her first choice for treatment but Niamh’s MS has progressed too far and she does not meet their criteria. Within a few days of getting her acceptance, family, friends and the wider community have rallied around Niamh to offer their support. “It’s just phenomenal the amount of support I have received already from word of mouth alone,” Niamh told the Wicklow Voice. “It’s just amazing the kindess and generosity that people are capable of and I’m bowled over by it.” Continued on page 6

Eleven people die as ‘Bray’ airshow plane crashes By Michelle McGlynn
A PLANE which participated in Bray Air Display in July crashed last week at a similar event in the UK killing 11 people. Shocked onlookers told how the Hawker Hunter piloted by Andy Hill, who also flew the plane in Bray, appeared to suddenly change direction and crash into slow-moving cars on a road. “I saw this plane coming towards me and I thought ‘Gosh, he’s really low, is that allowed?’” said Vivien Ayling, who was driving to work along the A27 in West Sussex. “And then all of a sudden he got lower and I thought ‘He’s going to come straight into me’ and then he veered off to my right and he just smacked straight on to the opposite carriageway to me, and then there was this massive great fireball and smoke went up.” As the community in Shoreham, England struggle to come to terms with last weekend’s air display tragedy, locals are being assured that strict safety measures are always taken at Bray’s annual show. Speaking to the Wicklow
The Hawker Hunter which flew in Bray and crashed in the UK Voice, Director of Bray Air Display and professional pilot, Sé Pardy assured, “All aircrafts taking part in the Bray Air Display arrive, perform and depart over the sea. “The flight paths never cross over the area where spectators are gathered or over heavily populated areas. Every pilot taking part is highly skilled, highly trained and extremely experienced and each one performs a set routine which has been practiced countless times ahead of a performance.” Mr Pardy says that Bray’s Air Display is the best in the country and attributes its success and high safety standards to the team involved in organising it each year. “Our team works very closely with the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) over the course of several months.” When asked
about possible ramifications for next year’s Bray Air Display following the Shoreham, Mr Pardy said: “New requirements may be put in place but that is standard procedure as safety precautions must be updated each year as the festival grows and changes. Pilot Andy Hill, who remained in a medically induced coma at the time of press, was a great supporter of Bray’s Air Display according to Mr Pardy who met Mr Hill ahead of this year’s performance. It is possible that new restrictions will be brought in on this aircraft meaning that it will not be granted a permit to participate in air shows in Ireland. The team behind Bray Air Display have expressed their deepest sympathies to all those affected by the plane crash in Shoreham.

768 are Ashley Madison members By Michelle McGlynn
It’s Wicklow’s dirty little secret ... it has been revealed that 768 people from the county are registered on notorious cheating website, Ashley Madison. The stats for the Garden County were released in a highprofile data dump of the websites user information by hackers last week. The majority of users in the county are male, for example in Bray, which has the highest number of Madison members in the county (359), 92%
of these are men. When we at the Wicklow Voice created our own profile (all in the name of research - honest) to get the lowdown on what drew the 768 Wicklow users to the site. Within half an hour of registering we had already received a message from an admirer lucky us. The sign-up process is pretty straight forward with no email verification required to create an account. When signing up you can register as single or attached and choose your sexual preference as well as indicating what it is
you’re looking for from a match. Options here include cyber affair, something long/short term or “anything goes” for those who are feeling adventurous. Users can paste masqueradestyle masks over their profile
photos in a rather ridiculous attempt to conceal their identity or they can go for a completely blurred image to keep people guessing entirely. After you have filled out your profile with details of your inter-
ests, desires and perfect match, you can begin your search. A search conducted by the Wicklow Voice for the Wicklow area revealed 26 members online at that time. It appears that the data leak and intense media coverage of the website has done little to deter some users. Ashley Madison kindly offers to make you a “Priority Man/ Woman”, meaning that you will appear in the top three search results on each page, for just €29.70 per month. The six children will be cared for by one teacher and three assistants. There is no need for families to worry about cost as all fees are covered by the Home Tuition Grant. A Speech and Language therapist will be on hand to work in conjunction with each family at no extra cost. Nexus employs a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst who will oversee the program. “This preschool has been a long-term ambition of mine as I have been studying education for the past eight years,” says owner Kerrylee Crisp. 1,300 children should not be homeless
I
magine that you have to leave your home quickly. Maybe your landlord has increased your rent and you cannot afford the higher figure. What do you do, where do you go? Your local authority, yes but they have a long waiting list for housing so a new home is out of the question for years. If you have children or are on rent supplement you will be hard pressed to find a landlord that will rent you a home. So back to the local council looking for emergency accommodation, except if it is the weekend then it will be sleep rough, impose yourself on family or friends, if there are any living nearby or maybe call St Vincent de Paul (SVP). If SVP can find you a hotel room or B&B until Monday they will. They may also be able to help with food vouchers or basic needs. But when you return to the local authority on Monday you will embark on an uncertain journey. A journey that may involve moving from hotel to B&B regularly for an indefinite period; making long journeys to ensure that your children continue with their education. You cannot change schools on a week to week or even a day-to-day basis. One family helped recently by SVP in Bray had been living in a hotel room in South County Dublin. Two weeks after arriving in Bray they were moved again, this time to a hotel in North Dublin. Apart from struggling to get your children to and from school every day you will be faced with a whole new set of issues that you would not have been used to. You won’t have any cooking facilities so how can you feed you family properly without relying on the local take-away every day? How will you wash and dry cloths? Where can your children play? What psychological problems will arise from three, four, five or more people living in one room? The list goes on. The most recent information from the Dept Environment and Local Government tells us that there were 3285 homeless people in the country, 37 of them in Wicklow, during the week of July 20-26, 2015. It is estimated that in the region of 1,300 children are currently homeless. The last count of households on housing lists in 2013 tells us that there were 2,428 households in need of housing in all of Wicklow. We would expect this number to be higher when the next count happens in 2016. What is the solution? Yes there is a Government plan in place for additional social housing, but that doesn’t solve the immediate problem for families that are homeless now. The issue around private rented accommodation is a crucial factor and
must be addressed as a matter of urgency. The daft.ie report published last week shows that year on year rents have increased by 10.1% in Wicklow and between 7.1% and 10% in Dublin. Most families now in hotels and B&Bs, visited by SVP volunteers are being forced into homelessness and into emergency accommodation directly because of huge rent increases in the private rental sector. SVP has told the Government that an immediate increase in Rent Supplement limits is urgently needed as a preventative measure to homelessness. It also proposes providing a financial incentive to private landlords for accepting tenants on the new Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) on condition that the quality of private rented homes are improved. The rental increases in areas such as North West Wicklow, North Kildare, and parts of South and East Meath, and other commuter belt areas around Dublin are particularly worrying as the maximum rent supplement limits in these areas are much lower than in Dublin. For example the Blessington area has Dublin or Bray level rents - however rent supplement limit for a couple with 3 children / one-parent with 3 children is €625, compared with €1,000 for the same household type in Bray. This is a huge differential and is causing severe distress to renters under pressure in North West Wicklow. Families need certainty to help them live in appropriate accommodation and to ensure that their children can access education and other services within a stable community environment. Liz Kerrins is Social Policy Development Officer with the Society of St Vincent de Paul.
The daft.ie report published last week shows that year on year rents have increased by 10.1% in Wicklow

The long and short of airport misery here are some people (a) who shouldn’t be allowed on an aeroplane and I meet them around this time every year. There are some companies (b) that really shouldn’t be allowed to run airlines and I end up using their services around this time every year. And there are some airports (c) that keep you hanging around for hours because their check-in and security systems have been devised by man-hating robots. So there I was hanging around at (c) when it occured to me that if the folks from (b) simply banned the people from (a), travel would be a much happier business for the rest of us. Failing that, I would settle for a curb on some of their more anti-social activities A few new rules could change everything. So here is my suggestion. A modest proposal. Are you with me, Mr O’Leary? And you folks at EasyJet, Aer Lingus, Flybe? Are you sitting comfortably? Well hardly anyone on your planes is, so let’s begin there. The first thing you must do is ban reclining seats. They were all very well in the days when airlines left room between rows for people over the age of five to stretch their legs. Nowadays all normal-sized passengers must sit with knees folded under their chin, which is tricky at the best of times and almost impossible if the seat in front of you has been reclined. And, while you are at it, how about some restriction on people with long arms? They bother me more than the overweight passengers. Once Mr Blobby has been belted in, he’s confined, extruding mainly to the fore where the only problem is with reclining seats (see above). Long arms are not so easily restrained. They come at passengers on both sides, poking at them with elbows, spilling their drinks. Airlines provide racks in which travellers must measure the size of their hand luggage. Could not some similar device be used to gauge the length of arms; up to two inches over the limit and you escape with an additional payment, more than that means you must either have an amputation or make the journey by ferry. Amputations will of course be charged and therefore offer a reasonable opportunity for airlines to increase their profits. Broadsheet newspapers should also be restricted. Their readers should be required to book an extra seat - one for them and one for the Irish Times. And I’m not just picking on the Irish Times at random. If somebody else’s newspaper is going to be stuck in my face for two
hours I’d like it to be one that carries the occasional article of interest. It hardly needs saying that Irish Times readers with long arms should be banned from air travel entirely. Airport authorities also need to show more sense of responsibility. It is surely time for sanctions against women wearing excessive jewellery, particularly those with gigantic earrings in the form of Dream Catchers or Ferrari steering wheels. These monstrosities interact with the brain in some strange way that prevents the wearer from remembering to take them off before approaching a security point, although the device has bleeped every other time they have tried to take them through. They are very hard to remove, often catch in the hair, and we must all wait in line while the woman tugs and squeals and glowers at the security team. Women in long boots cause a similar problem. Long boots with high heels are worse since the wearer has to balance on one six-inch stilt while trying to remove a sixteen –inch boot from the other foot. Again, amputation seems appropriate, although women wearing both giant earrings and long boots with heels should be turned away from airports at the door. Better perhaps to ban women altogether, although this poses a problem for me since I would never get anywhere if a woman didn’t book the tickets, arrange the accommodation, find the passports and other minor things like that. I feel she might not take kindly to being left at the airport. Perhaps a travel ban on disorganised men would also be a good idea. And what about families with big suitcases? Everyone knows that clothes expand to fill the luggage available. Everyone, that is, except over-loaded families with big suitcases who stand at the check-in emptying them and trying to put on the clothes, appealing for help from fellow passengers when they find it impossible to squeeze on a fourth jacket over 16 tee-shirts, four blouses, a basque and three bikini tops – and that’s only the men. Better to ban them. In fact, it’s probably better to enforce a blanket ban on families. Now you may think this little plan will leave almost nobody to enjoy the now trouble-free flights. Indeed. But isn’t that what airlines and airports have been trying to achieve for years? Michael Wolsey is a former deputy editor of the Irish Independent, and sat on the judging panel for the National Newspaper of Ireland Journalism Awards.

Education should be nurtured, not pruned
M
y favourite band is Fairport Convention and my favourite album in their large canon is one called ‘What We Did On Our Holidays’. The question always seemed to be trotted out when I returned to school growing up, and classmates would compare notes about the summer’s escapades and adventures, adding to the good vibe of being back amongst friends with another year of work, rest and play stretching out before you. It’s that time of year again. The education system wakes from its summer hibernations and gears up for the next nine to ten months. Generally speaking it is a time of excitement and hope as the young once more willingly step unto the breach. It’s certainly a busy time in our house. Our youngest is just starting primary school and our eldest is in her last year of college, studying primary school teaching. It’s a proud thought that she will graduate as a future educator in 2016 as the 1916 Rising, which was initiated in part by
Brian Quigley educators, reaches its centenary anniversary. There are two others in between. Things haven’t been easy for schools during the recession years. Cutbacks to teacher numbers and various other forms of funding have been amongst the cruellest and short-sightest of the austerity measures, but generally speaking parent groups and associations have stepped up to the plate to campaign for retention of existing resources - especially around the vital area of Special Needs Assistants - and organised revenue-generation drives to make up the shortfalls. The number of schools using Book Rental schemes has increased as parents are only too glad to avail of any help going. Hopefully the upturn in the
Sinn Fein Councillor John Brady taking part in the Purple House Cancer Support’s Sumo Run which set a new Guinness World Record
economy will see education prioritized as an area for investment, not pruning. After all, our future depends on us maintaining our reputation as a well-educated country that is attractive for overseas firms to locate to. After 13 or 14 years in school this time of year is always a step into the unknown for those moving on to Third Level. It is a huge turning point in life when you go to college, not just a change in the type of education environment you are attending. Thankfully most colleges now have excellent orientation, tutoring programmes and buddy systems available to new entrants to make the transition smoother and ensure a lower drop-out rate occurs than before such systems existed. Points for courses in general have risen this year and this is in line with the upturn in the economy. During the downturn increases in points were more targeted at specific types of courses, such as Science courses, which came into focus as offering better career prospects. College fees rose sharply during the recession and the issue of funding Third Level needs to be looked at with a view to a sustainable long-term solution. Is the grants system fair? Should we introduce student loans in a similar manner to the US or Australia? Should industries be asked to subsidise fees for courses that produce large numbers of graduates to work in that area? A positive development in recent years has been the realisation amongst increasing numbers of students that they don’t have to repeat their Leaving Certificate if they don’t achieve their top course choice on the CAO system. Finding your way into a particular career can have alternative routes such as a foundation via a PLC course or relevant work experience. If a particular career is for you then look at all the different ways of getting into it, even if some of those ways are via a longer and more roundabout route. Good luck to all – students, teachers and parents – with the 2015-2016 academic year.

The lady in bread ... What has gluten ever done to our Rosie ... model-turnednutritionist Rosanna Davison caused a silly-season storm this week after encouraging people to cut gluten out of their diets. The daughter of Enniskerry residents, Chris de Burgh and Diane Davison, Rosie claimed gluten is “responsible for a huge range of medical conditions from autism spectrum disorders to schizophrenia to arthritis”. The former Miss World claimed that husband Wesley Quirke experienced relief from “rheumatoid arthritis” after he ditched it from his diet. But despite being a qualified naturopathic nutritionist, her comments have been branded as “irresponsible peddling” by the Twitterati. “There is no evidence to suggest that the serious auto-immune disease of #RA can be managed through a gluten-free diet”, Arthritis Ireland tweeted, while Graham Love, CEO of the Health Research Board took to Twitter too. “Good grief!! Gluten the bad guy in autism? Arthritis? Schizophrenia? The Captain thinks Rosie should put more thought into her food before lashing out at poor old gluten ...
Death slips under the radar In light of all the curfuffle surrounding the existence or otherwise of the IRA in recent days, the death of Greystones resident Adrian Hopkins (76) slipped under, ahem, the radar ... The former bankrupted director of Bray Travel was the country’s most notorious gunrunner when, in October 1987, he and three other men were arrested when the French navy intercepted a small freighter called the Eksund off the coast of Brest. On board was 150 tons of weapons which were being supplied to the IRA by Libya’s Colonel Gadaffi. Hopkins made the astonishing revelation he had landed another four arms shipments which came from Gadaffi at Clogga Strand just outside Arklow. Hopkins told police how he had been recruited by IRA smuggler Thomas ‘Slab’ Murphy. The Wicklow man said he had been paid £200,000 and $500,000 in cash by the IRA which was given to him in plastic bags in the White Horse Pub in north Dublin. Nice work if you can get it, considering all the death and destruction the arms caused ...
On the run ... Speaking of people on the run ... It’s a big fat world record for Bray and Purple House Cancer Support. Despite the dismal weather, spirits were high among the 293 sumo runners and the hundreds more who turned out to cheer them on and support the cause. Runners of all ages appeared on Bray seafront in their inflatable attire ready for some rain soaked family fun. The event has raised over €3,000 for Purple House Cancer Support and which will enable them to support over 2,000 families and individuals affected by cancer. The voices of Bray Gospel Choir soared through the air, keeping the crowds entertained throughout the day and uplifting the weary runners. Gives a whole new meaning to the song Purple rain ...

book of the week Every time a friend succeeds something in me dies: The life of Gore Vidal By Jay Parini An intimate yet frank biography of Gore Vidal, one of the most accomplished, visible and controversial American novelists and cultural figures of the past century. The product of 30 years of friendship and conversation, Jay Parini’s biography probes behind the glittering surface of Vidal’s colourful life to reveal the complex emotional and sexual truth underlying his celebrity-strewn life. The life of Gore Vidal was an amazingly full one; a life of colourful incident, famous people and lasting achievements that calls out for careful evocation and examination. Parini, provided with unique access into Vidal’s life and his papers, excavates buried skeletons, but never loses sight of his deep respect for Vidal and his extraordinary gifts.

Bray blow Bohs out of the water Bohemians must be sick of the sight of Bray Wanderers. Not content with trouncing their illustrious opponents 3-1 in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division at the Carlisle Grounds on August 17, the Seagulls travelled to the fortress that is Dalymount Park on Friday 21 August for an Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup last 16 clash and added insult to injury by defeating their hosts 1-0. While it may be said that Bohemians had little to play for in the League game, they were certainly up for the Cup match and the highlycharged atmosphere inside a packed Dalymount on Friday last showed that their season effectively rested on overcoming Wanderers and progressing to the Cup quarter finals. By that token their season is over whereas Bray are into the next round of the Cup and on the League front their form is so good they will not be afraid
of chasing down Bohemians for fifth spot over the remaining matches. Peter McGlynn scored the all-important goal in the third minute of the Cup match (he’d also netted in the 3-1 league win the previous Monday) when his overhit cross was judged to have crossed the line despite Dean Delany in the Bohemians goal getting to it. The much-misused headline ‘Battling Bray’, so often wheeled out in the national media, made an appearance again in the newspapers on August 22 and for once it was an accurate reflection of Bray’s endeavours as the Seagulls held on for the remaining 87 minutes (plus four additional minutes) to secure their first ever win over Bohemians in the Cup. An incredible piece of history for Mick Cooke’s men. Wanderers were rewarded with a kind draw for the quarter finals when the draw was made on August 23.
Thomastown United despite a brave effort. We wish Ashford all the best for their upcoming Wicklow League campaign.
General Manager Declan Bowe presents Brendan Dunne (Chairman) and Declan Cobbe (Vice-chairman) with a cheque on behalf of the Royal Hotel who kindly sponsored Ardmore’s recent Mini World Cup (see story on opposite page) They pulled out a home draw against non-league Killester United (to be played week ending September 13) and so avoided the remaining ‘big
Dunne makes Walker Cup team By Michelle McGlynn
Greystones golfer Paul Dunne has secured a spot on the Great Britain and Ireland team in the Walker Cup next month. Dunne is one of a record number of five Irish players to make the team and will be joined by Jack Hume, Gary Hurley, Gavin Moynihan and Cormac Sharvin on captain Nigel Edwards’ team at Royal Lytham and St Annes. Captain Edwards said, “We have selected a group of player who compete

at the highest levels of amateur golf and, in some cases, have played in Major Championships and Tour events. “The Walker Cup offers these players a tremendous opportunity to display their abilities and gain invaluable experience of playing in international team
competition.” Dunne, who led the Championship after 54 holes, recently teamed up with Hurley at the US Amateur Open, with Hurley carrying
the bag for Dunne as he reached the quarter final, where he lost to Bryson DeChambeau. The other members of the Great Britain and Ireland team are Ashley Chesters and Jimmy Mullen from England, and Grant Forrest and Jack McDonald from Scotland.

Hard luck for Ashford Ashford Rovers lost out 2-0 in the Leinster Senior Cup last Sunday 23 August away to Kilkenny champions
Have you been watching the Beijing games?! The IAAF World Championships have been ongoing all week in Beijing, China, and will continue until August 30. Athletics is my number one sport but I found it hard to get into these games, given the drug clouds that are hanging over top-class athletics at the moment. Can you believe what you are seeing is a result of clean athletes? Are the ones that are passing drug tests now just doing so by keeping a step or two ahead of the testing regieme? The IAAF (like FIFA in football for differing reasons) has a lot of work to do to clean up its image ahead of Rio 2016. Let’s hope they make it and restore our faith.
