I was thinking about it (Kom’s record) all week, I was hoping that I was going to equal that record,” Katie said. Taylor added that her first stop

Everest to celebrate new home By Michelle McGlynn
Everest Cycles are celebrating their grand reopening beside Lidl in Bray this saturday, November 29. The business moved into the temporary space at Lidl following a large scale fire that hit their Castle Street premises in July but have now decided to make it their full-time home. Owner Tommy Hanratty, along with the help of some friends have been hard at work getting the shop looking good as new and they are ready to open just in time for Santa. The shop will be open all day and the fun kicks off at 2pm and it promises to be a fun day for all the family. Bray Wheelers will be making an appearance and Mary Black will be dropping by with her brother Mark at 5pm. There will be food, tea and coffee as well as competitions and prizes. “It is a celebration and more importantly a thank you to the people who sent best wishes, helped out and and just gave me the will to go on,” Tommy told the Wicklow Voice.
Local man has murder conviction overturned on appeal A Greystones man has won an order overturning his conviction for the murder of a friend who died as a result of severe head injuries. The Court of Criminal Appeal (CCA) ordered a retrial in the case of Thomas O’Connor from Burnaby Court, Greystones. O’Connor was jailed for life after being convicted at the Central Criminal Court in December 2011 of the murder of John O’Brien at Farrankelly Road, Delgany, Co Wicklow, on June 5, 2010. Both men were aged 22 at the time and Mr O’Brien was about to get married. The core issue in Mr O’Connor’s appeal against conviction was whether the trial judge erred in refusing to allow the defence of self-defence to go to the jury. The defence of provocation was permitted go before the jury. Giving the judgment of the three judges CCA, Mr Justice Donal O’Donnell said, once an issue of self-defence is raised, it is for the prosecution to negative
it beyond any reasonable doubt. The CCA considered there was a sufficient case for self-defence to go before the jury and it was not for the court to comment on the strength of that case, the judge said. In the circumstances, the appeal must be allowed, the conviction quashed and a retrial ordered. The Central Criminal Court had found that O’Connor (26) hit John O’Brien several times on the head with a rock weighing 1.6kgs, causing him “catastrophic” head injuries. O’Connor had admitted killing the 22-year-old to gardai but pleaded not guilty to murdering Mr O’Brien. However, in December 2011 O’Connor, with a last address of Burnaby Court, Greystones, was found guilty of murder by the unanimous verdict of a Central Criminal Court jury. O’Connor told Gardai twice: “I didn’t mean to kill him” and the defence of provocation was used during the trial, but the jury convicted him of the murder.
The Fishman hooks Paulo
The Fishman Alan Hegarty on South Quay By Peter Murphy WICKLOW Town’s favourite fishmonger got a great write up from the country’s most wellknown food critic, Paulo Tulio in last week’s Irish Independent. Alan Hegarty, who owns and runs The Fishman on South Quay in Wicklow Town, has come together with chef Kevin Kelly every Tuesday night for a food night with a difference. Paulo paid them a visit last
week and said “I was fascinated to see what he was going to do, as his only heat source was a two-ring gas burner. Alan, meanwhile, kept all the wine glasses topped up with either red or white ... This is terrific value. Simply going along and taking part is about the best value you’ll get. You’ll even get the wine served included in your €25.” The demonstration takes place at 7.45pm every Tuesday.

Pharmacy told to pay woman €10k over data breach
By Peter Murphy
A Woman from County Wicklow has received €10,000 in compensation by a pharmacy after legal action was taken for a data protection breach. CCTV footage of her buying a pregnancy test was shown unlawfully by an employee of the pharmacy. This case is the only case for a breach of data protection rights that settled with a payment successfully. She had told the court that her marriage was dysfunctional and difficult for a number of years. October 2010 is when the incident took place. She said that this incident worsened her relationship with her husband who is now deceased. She also mentions that he was abusive and violent towards her. The pharmacy is called Mulvey’s and is located in
Stepaside. They have not returned calls enquiring about the case. Her husband found a receipt of her pregnancy test in his teenage daughter’s bedroom and took it the pharmacy. He was shown CCTV footage and took a picture of it. The Wicklow woman informed the court that her husband texted her a picture of a purchase of the pregnancy test and had been scared to go home. She claimed that he would use this footage to make her life a misery. She went on to say that she had suffered acute stress and depression, and obtained counselling and medication. “Every day after that he would talk about it any chance he could get. He became abusive on a daily basis,” she told the court. The woman went on to inform Judge Groarke that her husband
and she had separated on and off. He had been physically and mentally abusive towards her and had been constantly roaring and shouting. The Gardaí had needed to intervene several times after having been called by the couple’s children. The woman complained to the Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) and they found there had been a breach. Fintan Lawlor, the woman’s solicitor says “The case has made the law clear on this point. “If it can be shown that a person sustained a loss arising from a breach of their data -protection rights, then pursuant to section 7 they are entitled to take a casesecure compensation.” Lawlor also defended Martin Collins a traveller who was the only other person to receive compensation in a data protection breach before but this case was overturned after an appeal.

Hospice planning decision expected before Christmas
By Michelle McGlynn
Wicklow County Council are likely to make a decision regarding the planning application by Wicklow Hospice Foundation before Christmas. The decision on the application had been expected in September but was delayed due to inadequate information supplied. The proposed site for Wicklow’s first hospice is at Magheramore, south of Wicklow Town, and the site was donated by the Columban Sisters. It is planned that the three-anda-half acre site will be home to a single-storey building with 15 in-patient en-suite bedrooms, a family room, a day centre and an administration room. The facility will also have a multi-disciplinary home-care team attached, providing help and assistance for people in their own homes.
The Hospice Foundation announced that they had reached their €3m fundraising target in June of this year. The announcement was made at a family fun day which was held on the Magheramore site where campaign patrons singer Chris de Burgh, rugby star Shane Byrne and actor Phelim Drew were in attendance. It was a joyous occasion for all those who had worked tirelessly to raise the money required to build a hospice to cater to County Wicklow. The campaign’s most high profile patron, Daniel DayLewis, was unable to make it on the day but sent along a video message to express his delight at reaching the fundraising goal. The Wicklow resident and Oscar-winning actor has said that it was the dignified way in which his mother spent her final days in a hospice in the UK that inspired him to support the Wicklow campaign.
Last year, the actor brought the only European premiere of Academy Award nominated film Lincoln to Dublin’s Savoy cinema to raise money for the Hospice Foundation. Over a quarter of a million euro was raised from the premiere and the subsequent charity auction of Lincoln movie props. Day-Lewis has spoken of how important the Magheramore location is to the facility’s ethos and quality. “The harder the environment, the less sympathetic, the less consoling, the less peaceful, the harder that experience becomes. “We don’t just want to slap ourselves on the back and say: ‘Look we built a hospice in Wicklow’. “It has to be a hospice built in the most beautiful and suitable place available and we have that place and this is where we’re going to build it,” Day-Lewis concluded.

Innovative app FoodCloud which redistributes surplus food to local charities is being rolled out in County Wicklow. The app will be most welcome as charities have found themselves under immense strain in recent months due to the housing crisis and an increase in the number of people unable to afford sufficient food. Demand is likely to increase further as the Christmas season approaches and the presence of FoodCloud in the county will make a huge difference to people. At the end of each day, stores will upload details of their surplus food and a text notification will be sent to registered charity partners in the community who can then accept and collect the donation. Community groups and charities across Wicklow who could benefit from receiving quality food products are being asked to register on foodcloud.ie. FoodCloud ran a pilot pro-
gramme in 18 stores between October 2013 and January 2014. During this time almost 60, 000 meals or 27 tonnes of food were donated to 38 charities. As the app expands nationally theyexpect to donate over one million meals over the next 12 months. Iseult Ward and Aoibheann O’Brien co-founded FoodCloud in 2012 when they became aware of the amount of good food being thrown away by food businesses while charities just around the corner were struggling to provide food for those who needed it most. “We have donated over 300,000 meals to over 200 of our registered charities and are delighted with the response from Wicklow-based charities that are already seeing the benefit of FoodCloud within their organisation,” said Iseult. Tesco stores across Wicklow are rolling out FoodCloud in their stores as part of their ground-breaking partnership with the app.

Violence against women is never, ever acceptable
Y
ou may have noticed the Irish team donned white ribbons during their international friendly against the US recently but did you know what they represented? November 25, marked White Ribbon Day in Ireland and signalled the beginning of 16 Days of Activism to Stop Men’s Violence Against Women which ends on December 10, Human Rights Day. White Ribbon Ireland is this country’s only national, male-led primary prevention campaign to end violence against women. It asks men to live the White Ribbon Commitment: never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women. We like to believe that we have an evolved stance on rape, there is no need for a dialogue. We all know that rape is wrong. But how many times have you heard about a rape or a sexual assault only to hear, “Yes, it’s awful. But she…” There is no end to that sentence that can be considered acceptable. For some reason - even though we know rape and sexual assault are categorically wrong - when it comes to real life application our view suddenly takes on shades of grey. You only need to look at the discourse that surrounded footballer Ched Evans recently. Look at the Bill Cosby case that is unfolding at the moment. Rather than treat those who are brave enough to confront their abusers with compassion and respect, often the first instinct is to doubt and to make excuses for the perpetrator. Writing on the White Ribbon blog, Avril D’Arcy told of the abusive relationship she endured for over three years and how she managed to escape. “I never realised that I would have to explain, to discuss, to argue my case. But I did, and some days I still have to.” It is these forces that prevent women from being able to speak out against assault or abuse. If people engage in the type of dialogue that is promoted by the White Ribbon campaign then we have a chance to change the victim blaming culture that exists. We cannot continue to deny that victim blaming is common in this country – and beyond. Ignorance will change nothing. The White Ribbon campaign’s goal is to change attitudes and behaviours that allow all forms of men’s violence against women to occur. Tom Meagher, husband of Jill Meagher who was raped and murdered in Melbourne in 2012, is an advocate for White
Ribbon Ireland. In his striking blog, The Danger of the Monster Myth, Meagher puts forth a concept that society attempts to deny: “that violent men are socialised by the ingrained sexism and entrenched masculinity that permeates everything from our daily interactions all the way up to our highest institutions.” (I will not rewrite the entire blog here but for those who haven’t already I urge you to read his powerful, eloquent words and give them some thought.) This ingrained sexism needs to be tackled from an early age. A crucial step is to teach young men about consent. Sex education, if it can be called that, is severely in need of an overhaul (an issue for another day) and an essential element of this needs to be a discussion about consent. Being informed about the notion of consent is important for both men and women. There are countless women who have experienced sexual assault without quite realising it because the rape narrative they are familiar with is what Meagher refers to as the “monster myth” – the stranger jumping out of the bushes and attacking an unsuspecting woman. No one has educated them about more complex experiences where the perpetrator is known to them. Consent is not the absence of a “no” but the presence of a “yes”. Another pivotal step in tackling all forms of men’s violence against women is to address the everyday sexist behaviours that are shrugged off and dismissed because they aren’t anything major. The acceptance of catcalling in the street, intimidation, groping and aggression towards women is not a separate issue. When other men abide these actions, maybe even laugh along because it is – to use the loathsome word – “banter”, they are contributing to the culture which allows men’s violence against women to exist. This is why a male-led campaign like White Ribbon is necessary to address this violence. A recent investigation by this newspaper into official Garda crime figures revealed that there were 56 cases of sexual assaults reported over the last year. Is this a figure the people of Wicklow can abide? Perhaps the county could come together, don the White Ribbon and choose to live the White Ribbon Commitment.

Truth be told, I mean what I say ... sort of ords mean what I say they mean, Humpty Dumpty told Alice - or words to the effect. It seems to be the slogan adopted by all sides in the never-ending row over water. The Government told us it was all about conservation and that water meters were the key to good practice - then abandoned the conservation element, leaving the meters virtually redundant. Irish Water told us its original pricing structure was necessary to fix the leaks and right the many wrongs of the system. Now it says it can do the same job with a structure that gives it about half the revenue. Trades unions vented their opposition to bonuses for fat cat water workers. Then, when the bonuses were scrapped, defended the same employees who had now miraculously changed from fat cats to oppressed union members. Paul Murphy told us that the people who menaced the Tanaiste in her car for two hours and hit her with a water-filled balloon were not violent, but the epitome of peaceful protesters. Poor old Humpty looks like a pretty good egg, and a real straight-talker, compared to this bunch. But I guess it was ever thus. I can’t mend the water problems, much less make politicians tell the truth. But, based on a lifetime in newspapers, I can offer you this guide to what they really mean. When a politician says ‘I’m glad you asked me that’, what he or she really means is ... I’m really sorry you asked me that. It was the last thing I wanted to hear and I can’t think of an answer that won’t get me into trouble. I’m going to waffle for a bit and hope you move on to something else. When a politician says ‘I’ve made it abundantly clear that’, what he or she really means is ... I don’t understand this problem and I can’t make up my mind what to do about it. I’m going to talk to my civil servants and see if they are any wiser. In the meantime, I’m going to waffle for a bit and hope you move on to something else. When a politician says, ‘This is a legacy issue’, what he or she really means is ... The last government brought this in but I can’t come straight out and blame them because we would have done exactly the same thing. So instead I’m going to waffle for a bit and hope you move on to
something else. When a trades union leader says, ‘This issue isn’t about overtime, it’s about family-friendly working hours’, what he or she really means is ... I want more money for our members. When a transport union leader says, ‘This issue is about providing the people of Ireland with the public transport they need’, what he or she really means is ... I want more money for our members. When a teachers’union leader says, ‘Our concern is for the students and the reputation of Irish education’, what he or she really means is ... I want more money for our members. When a political spin doctor says, ‘I want to make the minister’s position clear’, what he or she really means is ... When I finish this sentence you will be as confused as ever. When a political spin doctor says, ‘I want to make the minister’s position absolutely clear’, what he or she really means is ... If you thought you were confused before, just wait until I finish this sentence. When a political spin doctor says, ‘I want to make the minister’s position totally transparent’, what he or she really means is .... By the time I finish this sentence I’ll defy anyone in the entire country to explain what the minister is up to. When a newspaper reporter says ‘This is a story that needs to be told in the public interest’, what he or she really means is ... It’s a great story. None of our rivals has it. It will add thousands to the circulation and my editor will be delighted. When an editor says, ‘There are some things we simply would not publish’, what he or she really means is ... I’m going to sack the reporter who missed that story. When a website reporter says ‘I checked the facts thoroughly’, what he or she really means is ... Unlike newspapers, we don’t employ sub-editors so I thought I could get away with it. And when a newspaper columnist says he is going to tell you exactly how everyone else is trying to fool you, he means ... Exactly what he says. Trust me. I’m a journalist.. focus on faces Peter Reynier, Wicklow Wolf Brewery How’s life at the moment? Life is great. As is with any new start-up business you expect things to have their ups and downs. Even on our rough days though it is still a satisfying feeling knowing that you are working with a great team to build a business. What was it that first piqued your interest in brewing? I started HomeBrewing nine years ago when I was in university in Pennsylvania. Over the years that hobby continued to grow into a personal passion. I took a position working at a small brewery in Colorado and now several years later, I am here in Bray running the Brew House for Wicklow Wolf Brewing Company. Why did you decide to set up in Wicklow? The two owners live in and love the county of Wicklow. It is a beautiful area that has both the population and lively business life to support our enterprise and the beautiful relaxing countryside to help inspire and connect with the land in which we live, work and play. Pictured at the launch of ‘My Place’, an exhibition by artist Rod Coyne last Sunday, at the Tinahely Courthouse are (left to right) Paul Howard, creator of Ross O’Carroll-Kelly, Rod Coyne and Stephen Donnelly
People need to shift their expectations about work
L
ots of people in Wicklow and countrywide work shift. F a c t o r y w o r k e r s , emergency sevices and various other roles require shift patterns of one sort or another. I work shift myself, and have done for 25 years. Shift workers are in the minority in our workforce, but the majority of people will probably have seen a report in the national print and broadcast media last week on an international study that was critical of shift work in terms of its affects on the brain. It was sensationalised a bit, in my opinion. The study, by an international team at the University of Toulon led by Dr Jean-Claude Marquie, was published in the journal ‘Occupational and Environmental Medicine’ and concluded that shift work ‘’chronically impairs cognition with potentially important safety consequences’’ and that shift work can ‘’cause premature ageing of the brain and dull intellectual ability’’. Within the remit of the study were shift workers who alternated between morning, afternoon and night patterns and when tested over periods of
Brian Quigley time the workers (of varying ages) were found to have lower overall thinking and memory scores (compared to straightday workers). I think it is important that these kinds of studies are carried out but I have to say I was disappointed with the recommendations of this one, and found some obvious flaws in them weren’t picked up by any of the media that ran the story. Based on further findings that showed the brain-impairment reversed itself within a few years of switching to day work, the major recommendation was that shift workers should consider coming off shift. Easier said than done. Lots of people work shift because it suits their work-life balance much better than day work, and many more work shift because the nature of their job requires someone to be in the role round
the clock. If everyone switched and worked days then there would be no ambulance, Garda or fire crews outside of 9 to 5, and productivity at many factories would plummet to levels that would shut firms - economies of scale dictate that a busy factory needs to produce round the clock. Surely a better recommendation would be to implement what I have seen in my own workplace, where a forwardthinking Occupational Health approach is taken and shift workers are advised on the best research available that when adopted can minimise significantly the negative effects of shift. This approach recognises that some people have to work shift for the good of the economy, and that there is a lot they can do to offset the stress and strain shift work puts on mind and body. Like a tailored diet, advice on how to optimise restperiods and micro-breaks on shift, and maintaining overall mental and physical fitness. Just to branch out a bit, consider the related but broader topic of Age Related Cognitive Decline (ARCD). The brain has almost as much blood flow through it as the heart. Logic would therefore dictate that your brain needs to be as well exercised as your heart. And as
well rested outside of that exercise. Like any other part of the body, the brain is programmed to decay as you get older, and therefore you have to take steps to prevent this, or at least check its onset. The best things to keep your brain in good shape and stave of ARCD are reading, playing music, exercise, playing games or puzzles (such as crosswords or chess) and a good diet. The diet part involves eating plenty of fruit and vegatbles (which are rich in anti-oxidants and so offset the free-radicals deposited in the blood from processed foods) so your five-aday are essential. It’s a bit like taking care of any important machine, piece of equipment or body part. Look after it and it will pay you back with interest. Abuse it at your peril. Going back to the research discussed above on shift working, I think it is important for any researcher to not just state the obvious in their conclusions, but to consier wider and more complex solutions. Shift working is a case in point. Make it a safer, healthier and more attractive option for people given the potential drawbacks it entails. Don’t just suggest people stop working shift.
Is it important to you to keep ingredients local? Yes. As best as we can we source our equipment and ingredients from Irish suppliers. Unfortunately for the brewing industry there is not yet a large availablity of supplies for the beer brewing industry in Ireland. Our Locavore Blonde Ale is a Fresh Hopped Beer that is made from 100% Irish Barley and Hops we grew ourselves on our hop farm in Roundwood. Craft beer has seen a huge surge in popularity in Ireland in recent years. Why do you think that is? The counsumers are demanding a wider varitey of choice and better flavour. For many years the beer market was dominated by only a few choices but now people are seeing that there is a near limitless amount of flavours and beer styles. This change in consumer demand allows us little breweries to try our hand and give the people a taste of something a bit different. Was it daunting starting your own brewery? Yes and No. Taking a risk of starting a business of this level is always nerve racking but we have such a great team of family and friends who support us in this venture. We also have a fair level of training, working, studying the craft beer market to not feel overwhelmed by the challenge. What new Wicklow Wolf brews can people look forward to trying in the near future? We will slowly expand our selection of regular and seasonal beers. We want to give the consumer an offering of fantastic styles of beer from all over the world. What advice would you give to someone considering starting up their own business? Plan. The logistics of equipement, materials, ingredients, packaging is not to be taken lightly. Get a good team together, stand by your product and go for it. Future plans? Brew, brew, brew... We are just now getting three new 20bbl Fermentors installed which will allow us to increase our capacity and to spread to a larger market. While maintaining the high level of quality beer that everyone has come to love. About me. Peter Reynier. 28years old. From the USA. Head Brewer Wicklow Wolf Brewery. I started my brewing “career” when I was in university in the US. I spent several years working on Offshore Oil rigs and my down time was filled with Homebrewing and visiting Micro-Breweries all across the United States and abroad. book of the week It’s Not Dark Yet Simon Fitzmaurice In 2008, Greystones resident Simon Fitzmaurice was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. He was given four years to live. In 2010, in a state of lung-function collapse, Simon knew with crystal clarity that now was not his time to die. Against all prevailing medical opinion, he chose to ventilate in order to stay alive. Here, the young filmmaker, a husband and father of five small children draws us deeply into his inner world. Told in simply expressed and beautifully stark prose, the result is an astonishing journey into a life which, though brutally compromised, is lived more fully and in the moment than most, revealing at its core the power of love its most potent. Written using an eye-gaze computer, It’s Not Yet Dark is an unforgettable book about relationships and family, about what connects and separates us as people and, ultimately, about what it means to be alive. It’s Not Dark Yet is nominated for Non-Fiction Book of the Year in the Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards 2014 which take place on November 29.

MOVIE of the week Get Santa Gaiety Cinema, Arklow Steve Anderson is not exactly the world’s greatest dad. But now he’s served his time and is getting out just in time for Christmas. This is the perfect time for him to reconnect with his son, Tom. After three years apart it won’t be easy but Steve is willing to do whatever it takes. One evening, Steve gets a call from Tom: a man claiming to be Santa Claus is in the garage. He has crashed his sleigh, lost his reindeer and needs help to get home. Just when Steve thinks things couldn’t get any worse, “Santa” get arrested for a failed attempt at rescuing his reindeer. Steve wants to do his best for his son so he reluctantly agrees to help. Busymum has grown from there. The most popular Busymum products are the Family Organisers for 2015. This year there are two types, a five or six column version. Allianz Cumann na mBunscol
The annual Allianz Tráth na gCeist took place on November 20 in Lynhams, Laragh. The quiz was based on G.A.A general knowledge, questions on Wicklow, news round etc. Sean Stakelum did a fine job of both organising the quiz and being the MC on the night. Fifteen schools were there
on the night and it’s always a highlight in our Allianz Cumann na mBunscol calendar each year. Thanks to Lynhams for the use of their fine facilities and to all the teachers and parents who helped out on the night. Most importantly well done to all the boys and girls who participated. Day two of the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Coughlan Cup in Bray Emmets grounds on November 12 saw 16 schools taking part. It was pleasing to see the gaelscoils featuring on the day with Gaelscoil Ui Cheadigh winning division four and Gaelscoil Clocha Liath taking the runners up slot. Roundwood Primary won division three with their neighbours St.Kevins, Laragh coming second. Newtownmountkennedy Primary were victorious in division two beating a strong St.Cronans side into second place. St.Kevins, Greystones battled it out in division one to take the honours and win the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Coughlan Cup trophy while Scoil Chualann took second place.

McGettigan gets her medal - six years later By Cianan Brennan
Wicklow’s Roisin McGettigan was presented with a European Indoor bronze medal this week - almost six years after she was cheated out of it by a doping athlete. The former Olympic steeplechase finalist finished fourth in the 1500m at the European Indoors in Turin in March 2009, where she was just pipped, by one tenth of a second, for a podium place. The race’s Turkish winner Anna Alminova got banned for doping this year, so McGettigan was promoted to third place. Athletics Ireland have now received her replacement medal and are flying her back from her home in the USA at the national athletics awards in Dublin. They plan to hold a similar ceremony in Cork on December

20 to present Robert Heffernan with a retrospective bronze for the 20km in the European Championships 2010 (outdoors) that he has been awarded in similar circumstances, after the Russian winner was suspended. McGettigan (34) still holds the Irish steeplechase record (9:28.29) and is also the Irish indoor mile holder (4:30.06), which she set in 2009 when she broke Sonia O’Sullivan’s mark. When news of her promotion came last March, she said that “it’s not just about the medals. The problem is that they (cheats) set the bar unrealistically high, which directly affects everyone else.” Derval O’Rourke is also due to be upgraded to a 60m hurdles bronze medal from the 2013 European Indoors, but she is still waiting to get hers because the banned Turkish win-
ner is appealing her suspension at the International Court for Arbitration in Sport. Meanwhile, Fionnuala Britton (Kilcoole AC) secured her fifth national title in convincing style on Sunday at the Glohealth Inter-County Cross Country Championships at Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT) in the women’s senior 8km race. This equals Catherina McKiernan and Anne KeenanBuckley’s record of the most inter-county titles ever won. The former Double European Cross Country Champion (2012, 2013) was feeling upbeat after the race and about her preparation for the European Cross Country Championships in Bulgaria on 13 December 13: “I feel better than last year, I’ve prepared differently competing in domestic road races, and mixed cross country races.”

Katie delivers another title in style
Early mornings were a bit special last weekend. Katie Taylor was in action at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Jeju, the largest island in South Korea. TG4 stepped up to the plate and broadcast Katie’s fights live, despite them being on at around six in the morning, Irish time. Sean Breathnach was commentating which was an added bonus. And Katie delivered, again. In style. She won her fifth World title and has now equalled the legendary Mary Kom of India. Wicklow’s Katie, the reigning Irish, European, World and Olympic Champion in the 60Kg weight division, had been chasing her fifth successive World title. Starting the defence of the title she won most recently in Qinhuangdo, China, in 2012, Katie won a tough opening fight against Dominica’s Valerian Spicer on November 18. Her next fight, last Thursday,
November 20, was against the Finnish girl Mira Potkonen who pushed Katie all the way but the Bray athlete came through to set up a quarter final bout against Russian southpaw Sofya Ochigava. This was destined to be a rerun of the Olympic final from London but Ochigava sustained a knee injury in her last 16 bout and was forced to withdraw, Katie receiving a walkover into the semis where she faced China’s Jinhua Yin on Sunday. Katie came through her semi final after a technical knockout, Yin throwing in the towel after three rounds of the four-round bout. I’d have thrown in the towel against Katie a lot sooner myself! With only a day’s rest Katie squared up to Azaerbaijani Yana Allekseeva on Monday and produced a confident and assured performance to win on points. There were plenty of Irish in the arena judging by the cheers,
and anyone watching on TG4 was also rewarded with another stunning achievement from the Bray girl. Katie has long-since entered the pantheon of the greats but at only 28 she has time on her side to achieve even more. I’m sure she is focused on Rio 2016 and the defence of her Olympic crown, and 2016 will also present Katie with the opportunity to go one better than Kom if she defends her just-won World title. “Thank God again for a great victory. I’m absolutely delighted,” said the World Champion. “It was such a tough fight. I didn’t know what was going to happen at the end there. It’s an absolute privilege to equal Mary Kom’s record.” We congratulate Katie and wish her every success in the future. And thank her for being such an inspiration to young athletes throughout the county, and indeed the entire country.
