No Place Like This

Take a short journey through the historic City of Harbor Springs! Be sure to visit the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society for a more in-depth look at the history of the greater Harbor Springs area, and to pick up your copy of In All The World, No Place Like This - a wonderful book that includes these postcards and many more historical prints.

Downtown Harbor Springs The Harbor Springs Christian Association Library building was built in 1908 and housed the post office and library. The first floor became a Crump’s Candy Store in 1957 when the post office moved to State Street. Howse’s Candy Haus now continues the candy store tradition.

The boardwalk connecting downtown and the bluff was “Lover’s Walk.” The Columbia was the boat that served the Little Traverse Bay Ferry Line. Similar to today’s downtown area, the Harbor Springs business district was established by 1906. Now home to First Community Bank, the 3-story building on the corner seen above shows the previous tenant, a grocery store.

The dummy train is stopped at the GR&I Depot - the current site of Walstrom Marine’s parking lot. Bluff views of downtown remain one of the most popular views of Harbor Springs. Many postcards with this view help determine the timeline for construction of the Holy Childhood Church.

Wequetonsing Graham

Commonly called “Weque,” Wequetonsing was REAL ESTATE founded in 1878 as the Presbyterian Summer Resort Association. The name Wequetonsing comes from the Odawa name “We-Kwa-doosing,” meaning “Little Harbor.”

The Weque Casino was located one block north of the association office. It’s currently used as a recreation hall. The Weque Hotel was expanded in 1881, but due to member only restrictions including the rules that only members could stay at the hotel, the building was torn down in 1961.

Harbor Point

The U.S. Government purchased the deed from Harbor Point Association on October 27, 1883 for 3.5 acres at the tip of The Point to build the lighthouse. The Little Traverse Lighthouse was built in that location in 1884. In 1896, the 1,800-pound fog bell was installed. It rang every 30 seconds during foggy weather. The Pointer is tied up to the left of the Harbor Point dock on regatta day. This is the first of three variations of the water taxi that serviced Harbor Point from the late 1800’s. Don’t forget to visit the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society to learn more about the history of Harbor Springs.
