ABOUT SOUTHSHORE
Like many people, I have lived in many different places, most recently Sarasota. Not one of them resembles SouthShore. The communities of "SouthShore" in South Hillsborough County, are included with other nearby communities in an area frequently referred to as "South County." Hillsborough County has 1,048 square miles of land and 24 square miles of inland water area for a total of 1,072 square miles. The unincorporated area encompasses 909 square miles, or more than 84 percent of the total county area. The only incorporated cities in Hillsborough County are Tampa, Temple Terrace, and Plant City. Tampa is the largest and serves as the county seat. Municipalities in Florida may be called cities, towns, or villages, but there is no legal distinction between the different terms. Fully grounded in a rich history, yet embracing all the opportunities of the digital age, Hillsborough County is home to a modern skyline, major tourist destinations, world-class entertainment venues, a nationally-recognized airport, one of the largest shipping ports in the country, major educational institutions, a bustling agricultural industry, professional sports teams, and more. In addition to infrastructure, among the services Hillsborough County provides to over 1.2 million residents countywide, are libraries, animal control, parks and recreation, and social services for children, seniors and low-income residents. Community and Infrastructure Planning combines key principles of land use planning and infrastructure planning to meet the needs of Hillsborough County’s existing and growing communities. U.S. Hwy 41 runs through the center of Gibsonton, a community steeped in circus history with its own showbiz zone for keeping circus equipment and exotic animals. The population was 14,234 at the 2010 census, and 18,566 at the 2020 census. Like the other five SouthShore communities, Gibsonton is an unincorporated censusdesignated place.
Ruskin was founded in August 1908, on the shores of the Little Manatee River. Early settlers created legendary fruit and vegetable cooperatives that helped Ruskin earn the nickname "America's Salad Bowl," and then began a thriving tomato-packing business. The area was also once Florida's largest producer of fresh flowers.
Situated on Tampa Bay, Apollo Beach enjoys easy access to the Bay and nearby communities, as well as St. Pete, Tampa, Sarasota, and Bradenton. The unincorporated community has grown into an appealing residential area. Three square miles of a total 22 are water, creating uniquely shaped harbors and neighborhoods along the bay shore.

Some thought the area would get more recognition by having just one name. SouthShore Life presents a brief overview of communities that comprise SouthShore. Sarasota and Tampa tend to dominate local and national news about Central West Florida. Many residents in these two major cities may have heard the names Ruskin or Apollo Beach or noticed road signs while driving North or South along I-75. But without a personal connection or a reason to stop, they know little or nothing about the area. They have never heard of SouthShore because SouthShore is not a specific place. The name is the result of a group of community leaders who got together and came up with the idea that the area would get more recognition by joining together under the name SouthShore. This idea was

outhShore Chamber of Commerce merged two historic Chambers in July 2011, combining Apollo Beach and Ruskin. The Apollo Beach Chamber, founded in 1985, was originally an all-volunteer Welcome Center. The Ruskin Chamber dates back to 1928; the very first chamber in Southern Hillsborough County. Today, the mission of the SouthShore Chamber is growth through proper planning, new membership acquisition, and serving all members with value-added projects. For 32 years, until the worldwide pandemic in 2020 forced cancellation for two years, the SouthShore Chamber's main fund-raiser was a very popular event, the Seafood Festival at E.G. Simmons Park. Beginning in early Spring 2023, the Chamber worked tirelessly to present a "come-back" Fall festival named Best Fest. Masonic Park in Wimauma was selected for the location. A month before the November 45 date, Hurricane Ian devastated the grounds of Masonic Park. The event had to be rescheduled. Best Fest was held successfully at the Masonic Park in March 2023. Simmons Park was reserved for a return of the Seafood Festival in the Fall of 2023. Planning was underway when Simmons notified the Chamber office that the scheduled date had to be changed. Anyone who knows SouthShore Chamber's indomitable Executive Director Melanie Davis, knew she would overcome this setback. Just a few months before this magazine went to press, Melanie locked in a December 2-3, 2023 date for the 33rd annual Seafood Festival. The Ruskin Seafood Festival will indeed return to Simmons Park. SouthShore Chamber experienced a dynamic spurt of growth in 2023, welcoming some 70 new members to date and growing weekly. With its

hen is a firehouse not a firehouse? In Ruskin, it was in 2012 when the hook and ladder moved out and the nonprofit moved in. “The people of Ruskin were severely lacking a creative place to call their own,” says Executive Director Chris Bredbenner. “Our founders saw a great opportunity to showcase art and culture and provide experiences in a full spectrum of the arts without the need to drive to Tampa or St. Pete or Sarasota.” From the outside it still resembles a fire station; inside, much of the original footprint remains. The Fire Chief’s office now belongs to Bredbenner. The former firemen’s bunk area is now a large classroom. They even maintained the fire station’s old radio tower and created their own radio station WPHX 101.9, a low-powered FM station. Bredbenner and Director of Operations Beth Ann Stein have continued to move the center forward with new and exciting programs, structural improvements, and closer community involvement. The Firehouse has a year-round schedule filled with art classes for all ages in a variety of mediums. Summer camps explore a different theme each week from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm in a creative and safe environment. Each week culminates with students showing off their accomplishments
in a “Show-and-Share Performance” for their family and their friends. Adults can experience all levels of pottery in the studio across the street: how to form clay through pinching, coil building, and working with slabs. Most recently added are wheel throwing, glazing, and firing. Painting courses including acrylics, watercolors, and figure drawing. Live performances on Center Stage bring top quality musicians, comedians, and theater to the Firehouse's historically significant, intimate cabaret setting. The Black Box Theater has a capacity of up to 200. A private meeting room can accommodate 40. The shaded patio in the back and grounds along Marsh Creek are perfect for events and outdoor gatherings—including the
Annual Firehouse Fundraiser. These facilities are all available for rental as the Center’s programming permits. The Firehouse Cultural Center offers quality programming for all ages that encourages participation, engagement , discover y and learning. FCC offers a meeting place for experiential connections to the arts and to the history, culture, and natural environment of the South County region. The Center stimulates, supports and encourages economic opportunity, contributing to Ruskin's downtown development and to building a tangible sense of place. HILLSBOROUGH COMMUNITY COLLEGE: A MICROCOSM OF SOUTHSHORE
There can be no doubt that HCC will continue to be one of the major advantages of living in SouthShore for years to come.
T
The SouthShore Campus of Hillsborough Community College (HCC) is in many ways a microcosm of SouthShore itself. Rapid growth. Modernization. Fascinating history. Deep community involvement. Add to this huge bundles of Optimism, Enthusiasm and Energy. Much of this energy radiates directly from the Campus President, Dr. Jennifer Wells China. Under her leadership since 2017, HCC has completed three major Campus objectives and is currently working on a fourth. 1) A new satellite location in Wimauma in 2019 which offers programming and classes at the Enterprising Latinas location. 2) An outdoor theater-style classroom called the Learning Circle, completed in 2023, is used for various campus events, as an outdoor classroom, and is also available for rent. 3) A new entrance from Shell Point Road with four lanes and a circular turnaround, to be completed in 2024. 4) The fourth objective is to secure funding for building a new workforce education training center that will support continued growth in the area. Historically, HCC SouthShore opened its doors in 2008, some 90 years after Ruskin College closed. Early in 1900, Ruskin founders purchased land, subdivided it, and created “The Ruskin Homemakers,” which sold plots of land to raise money for general community improvements. Part of the proceeds were used to

cover the expenses of Ruskin College, a central feature of the community because Ruskin’s namesake, John Ruskin, believed strongly in free education. In 2007, the distinguished Dickman family donated 60 acres of property for HCC to build its fifth and newest campus in Ruskin. The palm-tree-lined campus is located where fields and fields of tomatoes and other crops provided some of the area’s mainstay agricultural products. In 2008, HCC SouthShore opened with 1,652 students, three faculty and 16 staff members. Today there are more than 12,000 students, 29 faculty, and 50 or more staff. Significant milestones include the first class of nursing students in 2010; beginning of the annual Job Fair in 2013; opening the Science & Technology Building in 2015; and in 2019 groundbreaking of the

first Satellite Classroom at Enterprising Latinas in Wimauma. “We are all about community,” says Dr. China, who describes herself as “A servant leader, problem solver, and advocate for justice, equality and excellence.” HCC SouthShore’s ties with the community run deep. Students within the Student Government Association (SGA) perform service hours throughout the community at places like Interfaith Social Action Council, HCA Florida SouthShore Hospital, Beth El Farmworker Ministry, and Feeding Tampa Bay, to name a few. Faculty Service projects include Bikes for Boys & Girls Club, Prof. Linder’s EMT Elementary Experience, and K-12 Great American Teach-In at Lennard High School. Firehouse Cultural Center: "Where the flames of creativity meet the foundation of education, the Firehouse Cultural Center and Hillsborough Community College SouthShore ignite a powerful synergy, fostering a vibrant community of learning and artistic expression. Dr. China and her leadership team, as well as the student organizations, have formed a valuable partnership allowing both organizations to maximize our missions." — Executive Director, Chris Bredbenner Wimauma Opportunity Center, Economic Prosperity Enterprising Latinas: "HCC's satellite center at the site of the Wimauma Opportunity Center cements our collaboration and partnership now and into the future." — Santos Morales, Director SouthShore Chamber of Commerce: “One of the school’s biggest impacts is the number of high school students who have been able to enroll at HCC while they are still in high school. Through the Collegiate Academy Program at Lennard High School and the Dual Enrollment options at other surrounding high schools, so many of our students graduate with their two-year HCC associates degree within weeks of their high school graduation. That’s an incredible start to their academic career and a huge cost savings to their families. “The Lennard Academy Collegiate Program offers our students a leg up on others their age. Many may not have had college in their future at all, however this partnership with Lennard makes earning their associates degree very attainable. These graduates are able to finish their education early and either enter the workforce right away, or have two years of credits towards their bachelors degree already completed." —Carrie Elwell, chamber member, local business owner, Lennard PTSA president, and SouthShore’s Honorary Mayor. Dr. China adds that, “Over 20 percent of the campus enrollment is comprised of students in either the Lennard Academy Collegiate or Dual Enrollment Programs.”

Various degree and certificate options open the door for recent high school graduates as well as adult learners who may be juggling work and family and want to advance their career. nd so it goes on Bokors Corner, the Facebook page that has become a "go-to" page for those who want to be in the know about local construction projects. Back in 2014, Brian Bokor was one of those people. "While walking my dog, I saw a yellow rezoning sign adjacent to my backyard. I had to find out what someone wanted to build there. Turned out to be a Section 8 apartment complex, which turned out to be an age 55+ income-restricted complex. And fortunately for me, it brought some of the nicest and quietest neighbors I've ever had," explains Brian Bokor. He soon discovered that Facebook was a useful tool for organizing maps, plans and photos, but never intended to make it a public site. But when he noticed the rapid proliferation of yellow rezoning signs he realized there are many people who should probably know what is being built next to them. In late summer 2023 Bokors Corner had grown to an amazing 18,000 followers. The page is an offshoot of Bokors Corner Realty, LLC, Florida Real Estate Experts, headed by Brian's wife, Sharon Brian and Sharon Bokor Bokor. What question do you get most frequently? “When,” is the question that most want to know. And it happens to be the one question I cannot answer. I can tell you who, where, how big, how many parking spaces, where the entrances and exits will be, and all types of other information about the project or the site. But when the “when” question is asked, I’m at a loss. There are far too many variables in the development process that can alter the time line." What's the most difficult challenge? "Knowing where to look. Depending on what stage a project is in, the information I'm looking for could be in the Appraisers database, the Rezoning database, the Construction database, and/or the Permitting database. On top of that, Unincorporated Hillsborough, the City
16
of Tampa, Temple Terrace, and Plant City all have their own databases making researching a project in one area different from researching another area. This is the reason I now have gray hair!" Speaking at a SouthShore Chamber of Commerce luncheon, Bokor explained that one of the challenges of this work is that zoning requests are for projects Brian at Chamber luncheon planned for the future, and sometimes they never materialize. Going back to research every one of the hundreds of locations he reports on daily would add way too many hours of research to his already filled schedule. Anyone who wants current and specific information about new construction should definitely like this Facebook page. Bokor's reports are often accompanied by a map and detailed drawings to make it easier for readers to understand exactly what is going on and where. "We do this with hopes that when you are in need of professional real estate assistance, you will give Bokors Corner Realty an opportunity to help. We are truly a 'ma & pa' operation. Our way of giving back to the community will continue to be by bringing information to your attention that nobody else in our community provides." Follow Bokors Corner on Facebook, or become a private subscriber "where additional goodies are available," says Brian.
"People should probably know what is being built next to them." Why should those interested in "More" go for the subscription? "By signing up for a subscription, I would be able to go into much more detail on any project reported on, including contact information, if available. For years now, I have had the option to turn my page into a group and charge a monthly fee. So far I have resisted this option because I believe the information I share is very important for locals. If you would like to support me via a monthly subscription, it would be greatly appreciated, but never mandatory. "We strive to bring you the most updated information available on local projects throughout South Hillsborough County on a daily basis. We're glad the information we share helps keep you aware of what's going on in your specific areas." www.facebook.com/bokorscorner

Ruskin, like all SouthShore communities, is steeped in history: The Uzita Tribe in the 1400s; Spanish expeditions in the 1500s; Pirates for centuries; and Northern settlers in early 1900s. They all most likely fished near the covered bench shown above. Long before then, Ruskin was home to mammoths, saber-tooth cats, sharks as large as a bus, and condors with a 15-foot wingspan. The community was founded August 7, 1908, on the shores of the Little Manatee River. It was founded by Dr. George McAnelly Miller and Addie Dickman Miller and named and patterned after the English philosopher John Ruskin and his philosophy of an “American Utopia.” Dr. Miller and his three brothersin-law traded property in Missouri for 12,000 acres in Florida. Back then, there were no roads. Only lush green wilderness with beautiful canals and waterways. Nearby, there were earlier settlers that farmed, fished, raised
18
cattle, cut lumber, and turpentined. The only way in and out of Ruskin was by boat. If the tide was too low, Ruskinites had to stay over in Tampa or St. Petersburg. Paul B. Dickman, son of early pioneer, A. P. Dickman, continued to grow the community. In the 1950s, many of his innovations helped make Ruskin known as “The Salad Bowl of America.” He and others founded the Ruskin Vegetable Corporation on U.S. Hwy. 41. The earlier economic development of Ruskin was based primarily on agriculture, and to a lesser extent ranching, fishing and small business. Through the decades to come, small family farms grew into larger commercial enterprises. There was a time that the Ruskin tomato was king—it even had its own festival. What is Ruskin today? It’s still a vibrant, growing community. More homes have been built and new and legacy businesses are serving the community. For many, Ruskin provides easy access to waterways, beaches and state parks. Besides all the activities the community has to offer as described on other pages, there’s much going on

The Parks & Recreation Wellness Access Pass gives residents 18 years and older access to a fitness center, open gym activities such as pickleball, badminton, volleyball, and select classes at one location. The cost is $10 a month plus taxes. It’s worth a visit! You can explore lost worlds at the Paleontological Education Preserve at 4140 24th St. The Paleo Preserve Fossil Museum there is a small, non-profit museum, but big in prehistoric fossil facts. In 1983, scientific history was changed when the world’s greatest collection of Pleistocene fossils was uncovered at the Leisey Shell Pit, near Cockroach Bay, by Frank Garcia. The museum is on the grounds of Camp Bayou Nature Preserve. Another popular attraction is Little Harbor at the end of Shell Point Road. It’s a community of homes surrounded by marinas, charter boats, two restaurants and stunning views of the bay. In any direction you travel in Ruskin, there’s more to discover. Be sure to read about the Firehouse Cultural Center on page 11 for information on fun venues and programs for all ages. My favorite go-to spot is E.G. Simmons Conservation Park. 2401 19th Ave. NW. From a leisurely walk along the 700-foot beach, to fish, boat, rent a kayak or go camping, this park has something for everyone. It also has a playground. Ruskin Way Back When Dredging, which was begun by Paul Dickman, was used to create additional land for sale along Ruskin Inlet and in several developments created in this manner. Dickman also used dredging equipment to create Bahia Beach. Photo taken in early 1960s. Only Mode of Transportation Below is a photo c. 1908 of one of two boats that served Ruskin as the only transportation in and out of the town. The boat was built and operated by A. P. Dickman to serve as transportation to and from Ruskin to Tampa in earliest days of the community. Below is the earliest known photo of the Ruskin Vegetable Cooperative built in what was then known as North Ruskin. (Now Apollo Beach). This cooperative was headed by Paul Dickman and some 13 other farmers who banded together to market their vegetable products. The cooperative was very successful in creating the Ruskin Brand of vegetables. c. 1932 Below is a view of Bahia Beach Hotel and Boatel. Note the excursion boat moored on the left side of the photograph. Bahia Beach offered excursions up the Little Manatee in its earliest years as a resort hotel. Judging from the lack of boats moored and the lack of cars, it can be assumed that this is one of the earliest professional pictures of the hotel prior to its opening. Below is part of a larger sketch of Ruskin. This was in the time when agriculture was the main local business. Area farmers would gather at the Coffee Cup Bahia Beach Hotel Boatel from their Postcard collection early in the morning before work. The entire sketch is hanging on the wall outside an office at the Firehouse Cultural Center, with a quote from John Ruskin:
"... a walk through this gentle village to the edge of Tampa Bay—They call it Ruskin ... I can lose—or find myself."
Vintage sketch shows Coffee Cup where farmers used to gather each morning.

In the late 60s, the Roman J. Claprood Co. of Florida was the largest flower producer in Florida. Roman’s daughter, Mabel Markwood, was CEO. In 1983 she became Mabel Simmons when she married E.G. Simmons. The flower farm was in operation in Old Sun City from 1946 to 1979.

Roman J. Claprood was a tailor in Columbus, Ohio, who had to find other means of income during The Great Depression. With his sister's help, he created the first wholesale company in Columbus, Ohio that delivered flowers directly to florists' doors. In 1958, the company outgrew its first location and moved to 242 North Grant Avenue, where it is today. In 1946, the company opened The Roman J. Claprood Co. of Florida in Sun City, south of Ruskin, with an 800-acre farm to produce its own gladiolus, and six other types of cut flowers. At the time, Florida's natural resources and transportation advantages attracted many independent flower growers. By the 1950s, Florida boasted some 8,000 acres of gladiola production, making it one of the leading producers in the U.S., with independent Florida farms fluorishing from coast to coast. After Roman J. Claprood's death in 1967, his daughters Romaine Claprood Glisson and Mabel Claprood Markwood (later Mrs. E.G. Simmons) took over and expanded the company to Bridgeport, West Virginia in 1979, and Lima, Ohio in 1982. The Columbus-based company remains in the family with the grand daughter of Roman J. Claprood, Gay Jean Claprood, as president. The Florida company remained in business from 1946 to 1979. The last gladiolus farm in Florida closed in 2015 due to competition
from South America. Knowing this history well is SouthShore's own Attorney Damon Glisson, Claprood's grandson, who worked his way through law school in the commercial sales department of the family-owned farm during the summers. Glisson also vividly recalls working on hands and knees in the muddy fields when gladiola stalks had to be righted after a strong wind; or when the soil in the chrysanthemum houses had to be cleared of nematodes (tiny roundworms) and workers were covered from head to toe in "hasmat-like" gear so they wouldn't breathe toxic fumes or get any of the strong chemicals on their skin. Photos above are from the Roman J. Claprood Co. Sun City, Florida farm taken back in the day. Damon Glisson's brother Wyatt has a wholesale floral business, Coward & Glisson, on Burnt Store Road in Punta Gorda. They are keeping alive the 173 years of the family flower business.
About Gladiolus
There are more than 250 species of gladiolus around the world. Gladiolus are also known as 'sword lilies' for the shape of their leaves. In Latin, gladius means “sword." 'Glads' make a showy cut flower and great accent plant in a flower or vegetable garden. Gladiolus varieties come in all colors of the rainbow, except blue, and in solid, bi-color, streaked, ruffled and double forms. ~Charlie Nardozzi, gardening expert and author

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT SOUTHSHORE REGIONAL LIBR A R Y SouthShore Regional Library
Did you know one of the largest branches in the Hillsborough County Public Library system is right here in SouthShore? This modern 40,000-square-foot facility has something for everyone—from the wildlife-themed children’s area to the recording studio to the Friends of the Library bookstore. Of course there is an extensive collection of all the traditional library offerings: books, movies, audio books and magazines. But there are also public computers, wireless internet access, printing and faxing services, a Genealogy Center, a recording studio, and several meeting spaces. The library’s Children’s section includes read-along books and launch pads that contain educational games dedicated to increasing STEAM, early literacy, and critical thinking skills. Early literacy classes, including Baby Time, Toddler Time, and Story Time, are hosted weekly along with other programs designed to promote continuing education, provide technology instruction, and support professional growth. A calendar of events can be accessed on the library website, HCPLC.org.

The system also has an expansive digital collection. Libby, Hoopla, Kanopy, and Mango Languages are a few of the more popular apps, but there is also a large selection of databases on HCPLC.org. There are far too many to list, but there is something for almost every need. There is ABC Mouse for the smaller learners; Learning Express Library offers SAT and ACT preparation, study guides for graduate school, and reference materials for career tests such as the NCLEX and ASVAB; and databases such as Universal Class, Linkedin Learning, and Chilton Library—all great resources for adults looking to learn new skills, hobbies, or just continue expanding their knowledge. All Hillsborough County residents have access to free library services. Getting a library card is simple, only requiring a photo ID with your current Hillsborough County address. If the address on your identification is not up-to-date, bring along a piece of official mail from the past thirty days to verify where you live. Your card works at all Hillsborough County Library locations. Materials throughout the system can be placed on hold and sent to your preferred branch—or even mailed to your home! Visit the website or call for hours or information on any of these services. Our friendly staff looks forward to seeing you at the library! 15816 Beth Shields Way, Ruskin. (813) 273-3652

And there is now another boulevard, Paseo Al Mar, that runs directly from Apollo Beach Boulevard and U.S. Hwy 41 East all the way to U.S. Hwy 301. New homes are going up everywhere, along U.S. Hwy 41 and East/West corridors like 19th Avenue. Small businesses have had offices in Apollo Beach for years—on the Boulevard, on side streets, and up and down 41. They are now joined by a host of new businesses. The SouthShore Chamber has a new business ribbon-cutting almost every week. After Francis Corr died, his sons took over and began a series
of residential developments. They initiated the first “finger wedges” type development on Florida's west coast. Using fill from dredging canals, they created fingers of land with elevations high enough for homes to be built on. And many homes were built on them! The first housing development in Apollo Beach was Jamaica Isle. The Jamaica Isle Yacht Club is now the Dolphin House. Later, home sites like Sabel Key and Bal Harbour Isles as well as Caribbean Isles Mobile Home Park were added. Exclusive communities like Symphony Isles and Andalucia, located right on Bay, became the crown jewels of Apollo Beach. Two hundred twenty-eight acres of farmland behind the DiMare packing plant is set to be re-zoned residential. Reportedly all entrances and exits will be accessed through Waterset, with no direct access to U.S. Hwy 41. New homes and new businesses continue to appear, reinforcing Apollo Beach as a growing and vibrant SouthShore community.
SouthShore Sportsplex
Waterset From the stately entrance off Big Bend Road to the impressive Waterset Welcome Center, it becomes apparent why many SouthShore residents choose Waterset for their home. This 2,374-acre master-planned residential development will ultimately stretch from the entryway off of Big Bend, all the way south to 19th Avenue, and from U.S. Hwy 41 to I-75. Waterset opened in 2013 and has since grown into a vibrant community with a variety of new homes from top homebuilders, as well as desirable amenities including miles of trails, resort-like pools, fitness centers, an onsite café, and more. The community also features three schools: SouthShore Montessori, Kids 'R' Kids Preschool, and Waterset Charter, joined this year by the new Dorothy C. York Hillsborough County Magnet School that opened in August for the 2022-2023 school year. With many residential options, recreational facilities, schools, shopping and dining options nearby, (and more to come) Waterset today is a lively community with a home-town feel.
The new sports complex features one of the largest contiguous synthetic turf fields in the nation. Inset: Playground swings.
A ribbon-cutting celebration in September signified the official inauguration of Southshore Sportsplex, a huge sports complex at 6110 Waterset Blvd. in Apollo Beach—a project sure to redefine recreation in Hillsborough County. It features four synthetic-turf athletic fields, which makes it home to one of the largest contiguous synthetic turf fields in the nation. The fields will support a variety of recreational sports and activities ranging from soccer, football, and lacrosse to kickball and cricket. In addition, the first phase of construction includes a playground, pavilions, a concession building with restrooms, offices, and meeting space, and parking for more than 500 vehicles. A landmark for sports enthusiasts, this dynamic site was envisioned and constructed in response to a pressing need for more quality sports fields in SouthShore. The goal is to enrich lives through accessible parks and enjoyable experiences. The mission is to empower the community in a long-term vision with three fundamental components: • Open Play Opportunities: A space for community members to enjoy recreational activities. • Recreational and League Play: Facilities for organized sports activities and leagues. • Hosting Grand Events: A versatile venue for large-scale events that bring people together.

Mira Bay In 2002, work began to transform an area on the eastern shore of Tampa Bay that had once been citrus groves and tomato fields, into the 750-acre gated community of Mira Bay. It was to be designed with emphasis on the water and easy access to the Bay. At the time there were no real roads there, just tracks through the mud and dust. The earthwork part alone was a $14 million project under one contract, thought to be the largest single earthwork project in the Tampa Bay area. Among many other aspects of the job, a 135-acre freshwater lagoon was created and vinyl seawalls installed in existing saltwater canals. A temporary sales center opened in late spring of 2002. Early on, the project faced a challenge from Frank Garcia, the paleontologist who had made a major discovery of pre-Ice Age fossils in 1983 that had put Ruskin on the map. With all the digging going on, Garcia asked to be allowed on the site to look for significant fossils. Garcia won the attention of the Hillsborough County Commission and the Tampa Tribune's editorial page. The developer invited the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville to conduct a search for fossils and Garcia was allowed to accompany the museum's team. This satisfied Garcia and smoothed the way

for MiraBay. Since the first residents moved in, in 2003, Mira Bay continued to grow over the years and today remains one of the most popular addresses in Apollo Beach. There are a variety of home styles by builders including David Weekley Homes, Cardel Homes, Sabal Homes, Ashton Woods Homes and Homes by WestBay. The residence styles include custom estates, low-maintenance villas, traditional single-family homes and cottages.
What is the oldest fossil found in Florida? A sea turtle —100 million years old—from the Age of Dinosaurs. Do you need a permit to collect fossils in Florida? Other than shark teeth, collecting vertebrate fossils (unless on private land) requires a Florida Fossil Permit obtained through the Florida Museum of Natural History. The permit costs $5 and is good for one year. All vertebrate fossil finds must be reported to the museum. It may be deemed scientifically significant! www.floridadep.gov
SouthShore Falls Del Webb In July 2001, Del Webb Corp. merged with Pulte Homes to create the nation's largest homebuilding company. SouthShore Falls, at 5831 Cascade Falls Lane in Apollo Beach, was originally built by Centex Homes in 2004. Following the August 2009 merger between Centex Homes and Pulte Homes (Del Webb’s parent company), the company took steps to restructure and expand both existing and newly developing communities. As part of these plans, Southshore Falls, formerly a Centex community, was re-branded as a Del Webb community. Along with its new branding, the company invested over $1.5 million into amenities and enhancements that brought Southshore Falls in line with the Del Webb lifestyle. The 14,000 square-foot Wellspring Club amenity center features a lagoon-style pool. Inside the clubhouse, residents enjoy a fitness center, Internet cafe, ballroom, card room and a billiards table. There are also tennis and bocce ball courts, which are popular with the residents. They like the convenient Apollo Beach location with quick access to Sarasota and Tampa, and that, despite rapid growth throughout Southshore, it still retains a small-town atmosphere.

WIMAUMA THE STORY OF ENTERPRISING L ATINAS

GET TO KNOW SOUTHSHORE
Wimauma is a changing agricultural community dating back to the late 1800s when it started through the expansion of the railroad and logging industries. Some Wimauma farms operating today are celebrating anniversaries of 35 years or more. In just eight years, Enterprising Latinas has become a major player in the SouthShore community, and its founder shares her story here. In the ever-changing community of Wimauma, a remarkable story of resilience, inspiration, and community transformation unfolds through the journey of Liz Gutierrez. Born to a determined mother who ventured to the United States seeking a better future, Liz’s life story would be forever shaped by the courage and tenacity of her roots and by the stories of countless women of Wimauma who have embarked on the same journey. Liz’s mother, Altagracia Gutierrez, arrived in the States in the late 1960's leaving her two young daughters, Liz and Del, in the care of her husband and his family. Altagracia broke all the conventional rules of a woman of her time in her hometown of Santiago, Dominican Republic and she paid a heavy price for her decision and sacrifice. With a heart full of dreams and a spirit undeterred by the challenges that lay ahead and the pain of family separation, she worked tirelessly in the textile mills of Lawrence, Massachusetts, a city that became her second home. With the support of her employer she was able to obtain her legal permanent residency and bring her husband and children to Lawrence. Shortly thereafter, they all became American Citizens. Altagracia, textile worker by day and missionary by night, immediately found a faith home where she was engaged fully in her community, providing support to all those who immigrated just like her. Her home was a hub for anyone needing assistance; her car was in service for those needing transportation; her kitchen always ready with food to share. At work, at church and throughout the community, she raised money to send back home to orphanages, churches and missions. This work continued when the family left Massachusetts in 1982 and made Tampa their new home.

Fueled by a deep-rooted passion to empower women and uplift her community, Liz’s organization has become a beacon of hope in Wimauma and for women of surrounding communities. Altagracia is a fearless woman, who never let language limitations, cultural differences or anything else get in her way. She provided for her family and her community. Altagracia’s sacrifices and unwavering resolve ignited a fire within her daughter, Liz. The indomitable spirit passed down from her mother's journey became the driving force behind Liz’s own vision for change. In 2009, inspired by her mother's journey and determined to create a brighter future for the Latina community, Liz founded "Enterprising Latinas." Fueled by a deep-rooted passion to empower women and uplift her community, Liz’s organization has become a beacon of hope in Wimauma and for women of surrounding communities. Enterprising Latinas began its journey by offering women a platform to discover their potential and unleash their entrepreneurial spirit. nterprising Latinas knows that we are realizing our mission when we see our members articulating their own vision of success and taking real steps to accomplish them. We recognize that Carmen Galarza is truly the ultimate example! Carmen’s parents migrated to the U.S. from Mexico to work in the fields of Wimauma and followed the harvest around the country along with their children. The family’s home base was Wimauma, where Carmen has lived all of her life. She grew up to be a farmworker too, working, playing, building community, and expecting Padre Chencho from the Guadalupe Mission to share lollipops with the farmworkers’ children under the orange grove trees. Like many of her peers, she served as a bridge between her parents and the rest of the world—serving as a translator, filling paperwork, and running family errands. As she became a mother of three, Carmen began to have dreams of her own. But those dreams kept getting thwarted by too many circumstances in her life. But Carmen didn’t give up. As Liz often emphasized, "Talent is everywhere— Opportunities are too." Barriers are made to be overcome, and Enterprising Latinas serves as a vehicle for women to gain the awareness, skills and resources they need to use the talent and tenacity they already have.

Beyond women’s individual empowerment, through the organization’s community development efforts, the ripple effect of Enterprising Latinas' work is felt throughout the entire community. Under Liz’s visionary leadership, Enterprising Latinas forged partnerships with local businesses, governmental agencies, and philanthropic organizations. These partnerships enabled the organization to expand its reach, creating pathways for women and Latina entrepreneurs to thrive and fostering an environment where economic opportunities flourished. The Wimauma Opportunity Center is the home of Hillsborough County School District English as a Second Language program serving adults of Wimauma, Hillsborough Community College, Career Source of Tampa Bay and Hispanic Services Council among others. elf-help participants are working hard on their new affordable homes through the USDA Mutual-Self Help housing programs that Florida Home Partnership (FHP) has provided for thirty years. "In that time we've helped over a thousand people achieve their dream of homeownership," says Vanessa Josey, Chief Operating Officer. “Our goal is to help people meet their dreams of home ownership while building selfreliance and living a healthy lifestyle.” FHP is Hillsborough County’s leading non-profit certified affordable home builder. Last year they received a $240,000 Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP) Loan from the Housing Assistance Council (HAC). The funds were used to assist with the development of more than 30 Self-Help Villas in Wimauma. These homes are available to families earning 80 percent or below median income, using “sweat equity” to help build their own home through the USDA Mutual Self-Help Program. Participants work together in groups on their neighbors’ houses at the same time as their own. The homeowners become an integral part of the construction. “Housing affordability is a huge

When we support and partner with an organization like FHP, we are helping to solve the problem and offer community members not just affordable housing, but a sustainable lifestyle that they will benefit from far into the future," said Eileen Neely, Director of Lending at HAC. The Housing Assistance Council is a national nonprofit lending organization that supports affordable housing efforts throughout rural America. About FHP Founded in 1993, Florida Home Partnership strives to empower residents to achieve the American Dream of home ownership to lowerincome families for which the opportunity of home ownership would otherwise be unattainable. the teaching and extension functions of UF/IFAS. In addition to supporting its faculty, staff, students, and postdocs, community engagement is a priority. "We are also very fortunate to have the support and guidance of our Gulf Coast Council," says Dr. Rechcigl. "The Council is comprised of leaders from the private sector, commodity-related organizations and state officials. The council assists in identifying needs related to the agricultural industries in the region and state. Their input is invaluable in helping set research priorities, so GCREC may continue to provide new solutions and innovations for the agricultural community. 14625 County Road 672, Wimauma (813) 419-6670
"Even the most casual observer knows that Hillsborough County has changed dramatically in recent decades. Gone are many of the farms and ranches that were once the foundation of the county’s economy. In their place are multiple new suburbs, businesses and industries that have transformed the south county’s character," wrote Charles Nelson in a 2019 article in The Osprey Observer. Intimately connected with SouthShore's agricultural community is the University of Florida/IFAS Gulf Coast Research and Education Center. This 475-acre facility has evolved from a small tomato research center with one scientist to a center of 20 scientists and over 200 employees that offers responsive research solutions to growers for numerous commodities grown in Florida today. Dr. Jack Rechcigl is Center Director and Professor. GCREC has been at its present location since 2005, after over 80 years of existence at two previous sites in Bradenton and Dover. The centers were previously established because of particular agronomic needs in the region. Historically, the Bradenton location focused on vegetable and cut-flower ornamental production. In recent years, environmental issues, protection of natural resources, as well as urban landscape and land use changes, have become important. The merger of location sites, identification of new research thrust areas and the addition of a teaching program with faculty located at Hillsborough Community College in Plant City, have given the faculty many challenges and opportunities to meet the needs of Floridians. The Center's vision and mission have been consistent throughout its nearly 100 years of existence and are in concert with the land-grant mission of service to the state of Florida. Specifically, the center develops and disseminates new scientific knowledge and technology that will assist Florida's producers to be competitive, both nationally and in the world economy. Key elements of the center's research mission are to develop low-input horticultural crop production and pest management systems; to develop conservation strategies to improve the sustainability of agriculture and urban landscape; to improve the genetics of commercially important horticultural crops, and to address major economic challenges to increase the profitability and sustainability of Florida agriculture. The faculty also excel in

Any Questions About Agriculture? UF/IFAS research is known and respected. So too is their blog. And it fills part of their mission to extend knowledge to the public. The blog is updated weekly and well categorized making it easy to find the subject you want. Excerpts from a few examples: "The Buzz About the Bees in Florida" by Forest Hecker. Bees, those tiny yet industrious creatures, have been silently playing a crucial role in sustaining our economy and environment. The mesmerizing dance of honeybees, gathering nectar from vibrant flowers, not only produces the golden elixir known as honey but also supports the pollination of countless crops that feed us. However, as we witness the alarming decline in honeybee populations, we also need to keep our conservation focus on another, often overlooked group of pollinators – our native bees in Florida. "Broccoli in the Landscape—An Edible Ornament" by Ralph Mitchell. If you like broccoli as I do, you should keep in mind that it is a very easy-to-grow vegetable that needs to go into your garden at this time of year. (September) I have already started my seeds for the coming season and am preparing the soil for planting. "Marvelous Mulberries" by Heather Kalaman. The mulberry (Morus spp.) is a fruiting tree rich in flavor, with nutritious foliage, a myriad of medicinal and culinary value, and a fascinating history. With numerous species, hybrids, and endless cultivars to choose from—a mulberry may be the perfect fit for your Florida-friendly landscape. The Alafia River is 25 miles long, with a watershed of 335 square miles flowing into Tampa Bay. The watershed contains 10 named lakes and ponds, and 29 named rivers, streams and canals. During the rainy season, excess water is pumped to the C.W. Bill Young Regional Reservoir, which opened in 2005. The river is formed by two prongs. The north prong starts south of Mulberry and runs for 23.9 miles until it meets the south prong in Lithia. The south prong begins south of Bradley Junction and continues for 28.7 miles. The combined river then flows 24.7 miles west into Tampa Bay. For centuries the Alafia was home to various native tribes, including the Tocobaga. From their settlement at the mouth of the river to their hunting camps upstream, the Indians left traces of their lives and activities. The Mocoso occupied the area around the mouth of the Alafia in the 16th century. In the 16th century, the expeditions of Pánfilo de Narváez and Hernando de Soto explored the coastal areas of Tampa Bay and visited the Indians, making the first written account and charting the first maps of the Alafia River. On an early map the name "Alafia" does not appear, but rather the translation, Hunting River. Alafia is a native word meaning "River of Fire," likely due to the river glowing at night due to high phosphoric content. After the end of the Second Seminole War, white settlers began to arrive, starting with Benjamin Moody in 1843. They settled on the south side of the river around what is now U.S. Hwy 301 at the site that later became known as Peru. Shortly thereafter, the Barnes family took up residence around Bell Shoals. These early settlers were able to claim land under the "Armed Occupation Act of Florida" which was passed in 1842 and granted 160 acres of land to any head of family or any single man who would bear arms and live on the land in a house for five years. By 1867, a ferry was operated by Methodist preacher, Reverend LeRoy Lesley. A second ferry near Lithia Springs was operated by John Carney. Due to the river's tendency to undergo moderate to high-level flooding approximately twice a year, numerous residences in the vicinity have been constructed on stilts. —Wikipedia

My Warrior's Place flags
My Warrior's Place was founded by Kelly Kowall after her son Corey, 20, was killed in Afghanistan. This is a retreat for Veterans, Military Service Members, Law Enforcement Officers, Fire Fighters, Gold Star, Blue Star, and Silver Star Families. Kelly's mission is to make it the best refuge possible and to inspire other retreats throughout the USA. The retreat honors, supports, and promotes healing of mind and spirit in a relaxed setting. There are tranquil areas for reflection as well as many planned activities and programs, each playing an important role in the healing and coping process. The support obtained through these programs is priceless. Unbeknownst to Kowall, one of her Board Members recommended that My Warrior's Place be featured on Mike Rowe's show Returning the Favor, a popular reality web series which highlights people across the United States who are giving back to their communities. Early in 2019, Mike Rowe and crew showed up to film an episode on Kelly Kowall and My Warrior's Place. The video aired July 1, 2019. Camping TRIVIA
Comfy Camping LLC, owned by Christopher Dutton of Plant City, is a family-run business that opened its doors in April 2022, and has since expanded to three sites inside Alafia River State Park. The business has a commercial-use agreement to operate within the Park. A percentage of each rental is paid to the Florida State Parks Department to help support park maintenance and improvements. Who is coming? Dutton says clients are "people who have never camped before; people who used to camp but don’t want all the stuff that goes with it; people who like to camp but don’t want to sleep on an air mattress, and experienced campers who just want a different experience." Alafia River State Park is best known for the abundant mountain biking trails that range in difficulty levels from beginner to double-black diamond. The park also has miles of hiking trails—from flat, sunny trails to winding rugged trails through deep woods, as well as equestrian trails. There is a free barn and paddock for horse owners. The Alafia River runs through the park. There are several other small ponds and lakes where guests can fish, kayak, and canoe—if they bring their own boat or rent one during their glamping experience. A family-owned business, Alafia River Canoe Rental, is nearby. Also, about ten minutes away, is Lithia Springs Conservation Park, where guests can swim all year in 72-degree water. What about a campfire? No comfy camping experience would be complete without a good 'ole campfire and some grilling. Each site has its own private firepit with benches, chairs, and a shaded picnic table nearby. The grilling area is completely stocked down to the last detail, including a drip coffee maker. There's a hammock and a fully-furnished luxury canvas bell tent. The site is solar powered and has potable water. There's also a butterfly garden and crushed shell pad. The site is very close to the public bath house which is wheelchair accessible. Weekends and holidays fill up several months in advance. "The best way to reserve a site," advises Dutton, "is online at www.comfycampingexperience.com."
When was the first evidence of tent shelters? The first evidence of tent shelters can be traced all the way back to 40,000 BC. Of course, tents back then were made with mammoth hide.

Throwing axes, smashing up a room full of trash with hammers, working your way out of a locked room ...? None of these activities will likely reach the popularity of pickelball. Outdoors writer Alex Johansen lists 11 reasons to try axe throwing including fun, confidence building, the fact that it's a solid cardio workout and excellent cross-training. In the early '60s, after testing a community planned specifically for retirement living in Arizona and California, Del Webb purchased the 12,000-acre property that is now Sun City Center (SCC). Groundbreaking was on May 10, 1961. W-G Development Corporation bought out the Del Webb Corporation's interests in SCC in early 1972. W-G sold its land on the south side of SR 674, West of the developing parts of Sun City Center, to the Kings Point Housing Corporation, and the property they bought would become known as Kings Point. Over the years, SCC has had its ups and downs with the changing times, economic conditions in the country, and the many changes of ownership and developers. Many of us have watched its continual change. The vigilance of the Community Association members and the dedicated efforts of their elected leaders are the keys to maintaining the safe, comfortable and active retirement lifestyle of SCC. With popular new businesses opening, many restaurants, multiple churches, a hub for medical providers, and Kings Point and others opening their events to the public, this community is a frequent destination for SouthShore residents. Covering South Shore ... One Story at a Time "I love South Shore and the people of South Shore, and I feel privileged to write about both,” says Sun City Center resident Lois Kindle. You probably recognize her name from her weekly bylined articles in The Observer News, where she is the main freelance writer. "I’ve always enjoyed the creative process of writing and reaching others through words. I began in junior high school and continued in college and eventually went into a career in newspapering. But it wasn’t until I was 47 that I actually became a journalist." Her newspaper career began in 1973 when she started as a carrier for The Tampa Tribune. "I worked my way up through supervisory and management positions in the circulation department. When I left in 1996, I was a member of the department's senior staff and customer relations manager for the entire company."
"I love South Shore and the people of South Shore, and I feel privileged to write about both." She switched to writing in 1997, when she started freelancing with Sunbelt Newspapers, which later became sections of The Tampa Tribune. In 2003 she became a full-time employee, writing and editing for The South Shore News. After the Tampa Bay Times bought and closed The Tampa Tribune in 2016, she began

freelancing for The Observer News. To summarize, Lois Kindle has been writing about the people and happenings in the South Shore community for 26 years. "I get to do what I love—community journalism. The people in South Shore appreciate my writing because it feels familiar to them. I mostly focus on what’s positive or uplifting in the community, its people, organizations and businesses. “I’m a columnist, writer and photographer, who enjoys the freedom of being a freelancer. I'm the best boss I ever had." She's always looking for stories that are informative or entertaining. Now in her seventh year with The Observer News, she writes three stories a week, plus her popular column "Loose Ends," and occasional series "Good Hearts," which focuses on stories about people whose vocation or avocation serves others. She also likes to inform readers about issues that affect their lives, including fraud and scams. "Lois is one of my favorite people in South Shore," says Chamber Director Melanie Davis. "She genuinely cares about what is going on in our community and works very hard to make people aware of it through her writing. Lois is a true friend to South Shore."

Grande Dame of SCC's 55+ Communities
Kings Point Suncoast Today
IIn 1972, Sun City Center (SCC) wasn't going the way founder Del Webb had envisioned. W-G Development Corporation bought his interests in the property and that same year sold the land on the south side of State Route 674 and west of the developing parts of SCC to Kings Point Housing Corp. of Delray Beach. These early developers would be very impressed if they could see Kings Point today. Along with all SouthShore communities, SCC continues to experience rapid growth and demand for housing for all age groups. There are many established, new, and planned gated communities in the areas surrounding SCC's commercial center. Kings Point is one of the oldest, largest, and most visible adult communities, since its entrance gates are a familiar site from the bustling 674 thoroughfare. Today Kings Point is also a popular destination for SouthShore residents who want to attend events at Veterans Theater. Kings Point has continued to grow and modernize over the years. Today it is comprised of 114 communities spanning 700 acres of lush Florida landscapes. There are more than 5,500 residences arranged in individual neighborhoods ranging from 15 to 170 homes. Bicyclists, motorcyclists, golf carts and cars share over 40 miles of private streets inside the gates. The main attraction is the 90,000-square-foot Kings Point Clubhouse that includes an indoor pool and spa, an outdoor pool with a large deck area for poolside gathering, socializing, and entertaining, card room, billiards room, an internet café1, an art room, a dance studio, plus multiple hobby and game rooms, and a café for casual dining. Surrounding the Kings Point Clubhouse is a lawn bowling court as well as tennis and shuffleboard. South Club is a popular destination at the southern end of Kings Point. Inside this 30,000-square-foot clubhouse is the Palm Court Restaurant and Bar. From both the indoor or outdoor areas, there's a view of a pond and the adjoining golf course.

Here residents enjoy watching movies on the big screen at "dinner-and-a-movie" events, matinees or evening shows. Kings Point also hosts live performances by local theatre groups and musical performances by bands and individual performers in a variety of genres. For these special events, the theater is converted into an 850-seat venue and tickets are sold in the lobby box office.

There are clubs for cats, dogs, writers, investors, gardeners, and fun-lovers of every stripe. Music & Dance. There are 22 music and dance clubs from polka to ballroom dance and from big-band to country music. Shown above is a line dancing class. What kind of bird is that? Where can I learn more about the environment? Can I plant flowers that attract butterflies? What’s a good place to see birds? Have you wondered about these sorts of questions? You can find answers right here in SouthShore at the Eagle Audubon Society’s meetings and field trips. We are a chapter of the National Audubon Society and draw our members and friends from all parts of SouthShore. We strive to increase knowledge and involvement in our environment through interest in birds and where they live, ecosystem preservation, and habitat restoration. We meet on the third Monday of each month from October through April at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 1239 West Del Webb Blvd., Sun City Center. Doors open at 1 pm for social time and the meeting begins at approximately 1:45. Everyone is invited. In the coming year we will have speakers on such topics as sea grasses in Tampa Bay, Florida scrub-jays, fish populations, the bird islands in the Bay, and much more. Our field trips provide ways not only to learn about birds but also to experience the fullness of natural places.
