UPDATE ON REVISIONS TO THE EUROPEAN PPE DIRECTIVE PPE Directive 89/686/EEC is now over 20 years old. A new PPE regulation will reflect innovations and enhance consumer safety, while ensuring fair competition between the companies. Granberg AS has embraced this updated legislation.

The PPE Regulation is mandatory and covers any type of product that falls into its scope, including protective gloves.

Key points and dates

Our gloves satisfy the new criteria, and we are setting up our labora tory with new relevant equipment and training our employees to guide end users in choosing the right glove.

• PPE Directive 89/686/EEC replaced by PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425.

Granberg AS has become a member of European Safety Federation and will represent interests of the PPE industry in the institutions of the European Union.

• PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425 enters into force 21st of April 2016 and shall apply from 21st April 2018.

Glove Standards update The current PPE glove standards EN 388:2003 and EN 374:2003 are changing. Currently new standards are under process of appro val and are expected to be published by the end of 2016 or beginning of 2017.

prEN 388:2014 Protective Gloves against Mechanical Risks A new revision of the EN 388 Standard is expected to increase the accuracy of testing as well as to enable consumers to acquire clearer information helping them to make the right choice in choosing their hand protection. Current EN 388 Standard is divided into four categories:

A – Abrasion resistance

B – Blade cut resistance

C – Tear resistance

D – Puncture resistance

Only abrasion resistance and blade cut resistance will be revised in the new directive.

Revised PPE Directive

• PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425 is published in the Official Journal of the European Union (EU).

Abrasion resistance The abrasive paper indicated in the standard and used in the test, is no longer available in the market. Therefore, notified bodies have started using alternative paper according to their understanding. This situation has caused inconsistency of test results throughout the notified bodies and confusion within the market. A new revision will define guidelines of choosing the abrasive paper and will ensure the same testing conditions.

Cut resistance Current EN 388 Standard is using Coup Test (shown below) method to assess cut resistance. During this test, a sample of tested glove material is prepared and laid on a flat surface. During the test a rotating circular blade tracks back and fourth across the sample with fixed 5 N load until a cut-though is achieved. The cut resistance of the sample is compared to reference cotton fabric and a Cut Index is calculated.

EN ISO 13997 uses a flat blade that is pressed over a sample of mate rial attached to a slightly curved hard surface. The principle of the test is to measure the load applied to the blade in order to make a cut-through over a 20 mm stroke length. The blade tracks only a short distance and is replaced by a new blade after one time use, therefore dulling of the blade plays a considerable less significant part.

This test method has been used since 1994 and has its limitations. Test level »

New highly abrasive and cut-resistant materials, such as materials containing glass fibres or stainless steel, have reached the market.

These materials can often lead to dulling of the blades. As a consequence, this test method is providing inconsistent and in accurate test results with misleading information about materials with high cut resistance and high abrasion resistance. The new revision of the EN 388 Standard will maintain the current Coup Test method for gloves that do not dull the blade. Materials that are noticed to dull the blade will be tested according to already existing EN ISO 13997 Cut Test Method, performed by a TDM machine. This test method is created to evaluate protection level of highly cut resistant safety gloves by simulating an accidental single contact of a great force with a sharp object. It determines the force in Newtons (N) required to cut through the sample of material.

Impact protection The gloves that have specific impact resistant properties on the back of the hand can be tested against an updated EN 13594:2015. This standard is created to asses protective gloves for motorcycle riders. The tested glove knuckles are impacted by 2.5 kg load, creating im pact energy of 5J. The attenuation shall give a performance of Level 1 as in EN13594:2015. If the sample has achieved a result of Level 1, the letter «P» will be added to the results.

The adequate level of protection is expressed in levels A to F.

To be able to label your products “Safety equipment” there are many regulations to comply with. One of them is to ensure that your products have been marked according to the CE and EN standards which they have been tested against and approved for. These letters, numbers and symbols may seem rather confusing. So let’s try to explain them with a couple of examples. European Glove Standards General Requirements

Pictograms for the Relevant Standards

All protective gloves must comply with EN 420 – General requirements for pro tective gloves. The only exceptions are insulating protective gloves for working with electricity and single-use gloves. EN 420 regulates the minimum requirements for a glove. Instructions for use must be enclosed with every package of gloves and must contain information on storage and transport, cleaning, handling and disposal. This fundamental norm sets the recommended values for chromium (VI) (max. 3 mg/kg) and the pH value (between 3.5 and 9.5). Furthermore, EN 420 requires a dexterity test (min. 0, max. 5) for protective gloves.

EN 374 – Protective Gloves against Chemical and Bacteriological Risks The revised version of EN 374 has been in force since 2004. According to this version, chemical-resistant gloves are classified as: • Gloves offering chemical protection • Gloves offering low chemical resistance

Permeation Permeation is the invisible microscopic diffusion of a chemical substance through a protective glove. A chemical-resistant glove can be permeated by a chemical or solvent within seconds. Level

Although tests are performed according to the norm, this is not sufficient to determine the exact wearing time of a chemical-resistant glove. Factors such as temperature and stretching have a great influence on how fast the chemical permeates the glove material. We therefore recommend a 25% safety margin.

Penetration Penetration is the macroscopic permeation of a protective glove. This means the chemical-resistant glove has a leak or a hole. A list of 12 test chemicals is also new. For a glove to qualify for the ”chemical protection” classification, it must achieve permeation level 2 for at least three of the test chemicals. ID

The test is carried out according to ISO 2859-1:1989, which requires spot checking gloves from a production run in regard to acceptable quality level (AQL). During these tests, which are particularly used in the production of single-use gloves, the gloves’ air tightness and water tightness are checked according to EN 374. When testing chemical-resistant multi-use gloves, the tests are adapted accordingly. Whereas cotton-lined chemical-resistant gloves pass the test relatively easily concerning air tightness, the subsequent water test often shows that the gloves are not entirely tight.

EN 407 - Thermal Risks

Consequently, due to their composition many protective gloves can no longer be regarded as chemical-resistant gloves. Nitrile single-use gloves with a thickness of 0.1 mm are also no longer sufficient. A chemical-resistant glove offers protection against bacteria and moulds if the glove achieves at least penetration level 2.

A chemical-resistant glove classified as a glove with low chemical resistance definitely protects against several hazardous substances. The wearer, however, must be more cautious and carefully read the enclosed instructions for use to check which chemicals the glove has been tested against. Glove Materials and Definitions Natural Rubber Latex

Polyurethane (PU)

Natural rubber, the oldest liquid-proof glove material, excels at pro tecting the wearer from mild acids, alcohols, bases and most diluted chemical solutions. However, natural rubber generally offers low chemical protection.

Polyurethane (PU) foam is a sponge-like cellular polymer which con tains urethane and is produced through a chemical reaction which involves polyester. PU is as elastic as natural rubber and is very strong and durable. PU-dipped gloves have higher abrasion and tear resistance than rubber-coated gloves and also provide better mechanical protection.

Gloves made of natural rubber latex are often used in industrial appli cations, for cleaning and in food processing and handling. They are exceptionally liquid-proof, highly durable and elastic, but are not resistant to oil. Latex is biodegradable and therefore very environmentally friendly.

PU-coated knitted gloves offer superior dexterity and abrasion resistance.

Note: Gloves made of natural rubber can cause allergic reactions in some individuals. If allergic reactions occur, discontinue use immediately, and seek medical advice. Choose nitrile or PVC gloves as a substitute.

To soften PU, traditionally acids have been used, hence the expression acid-based PU. Granberg is now using a superior, patented technology in several glove models where PU is softened exclusively by use of water, and the material therefore contains no acids and/or toxic chemicals, hence the expression water-based PU.

Synthetic Rubber: Nitrile

Polyester/Cotton Blends and Nylon

Nitrile is a synthetic rubber compound consisting of acrylonitrile (ACN) and butadiene (BD) and does not contain latex proteins. Nitrile gloves are ideal for latex-sensitive individuals. The combination of ACN and BD provides a glove material which is extremely durable and gives exceptionally good grip in dry conditions. Nitrile is highly resistant to e.g. aliphatic hydrocarbons such as unleaded petrol, diesel, hexane and paraffin. Furthermore, nitrile provides excellent protection against oils, solvents, grease, etc. Nitrile must not be used with ketones such as acetone, MEK, etc. Nitrile is also a widely used material in single-use gloves. Nitrile provides a very high level of protection against microorganisms, bacteria and viruses compared with other glove materials.

Synthetic Rubber: Neoprene Neoprene provides excellent protection against oils, solvents and corrosive chemicals, but is somewhat less resistant to abrasion and cuts than either natural rubber or nitrile. The material gives good protection against battery acids, phenoxy acids, phosphoric acids, hydrochloric acid and sodium and potassium hydroxide. Neoprene is used in all types gloves, from thin sterile surgical gloves to chemical-resistant gloves. Moreover, neoprene retains its elasticity and flexibility in extremely cold conditions and is also resistant to high temperatures.

Varied combinations of yarn and nylon significantly increase knit strength and durability while still offering dexterity. The gloves are often coated with rubber, nitrile, PU or other materials to improve grip and longevity. Such yarn blends are also used in dipped gloves as lining for increased comfort and glove life.

MicroSkin Shield® One of the best synthetic leather grades, MicroSkin Barrier™ offers excellent sensitivity. One of the future’s most interesting synthetic, high-tech leather types. Best suited for form-fitting assembly gloves. Compared with real leather of same thickness, MicroSkin Barrier™ is clearly superior in terms of durability and longevity.

MacroSkin Pro® MacroSkin Pro™ is a heavy-duty synthetic chrome-free type of leather suited for harsh conditions. The leather offers excellent grip and breathable properties and is very soft. Suitable for assembly gloves and all-round gloves.

PROTEX® Membrane This is a unique membrane based on cutting-edge technology and which is used in several of our winter-lined gloves to keep the wearer’s hands dry and comfortable in cold and windy conditions.

Synthetic Rubber: Butyl Butyl offers the highest possible penetration resistance to gases or water vapours. Resists common acids and alcohols and protects against aldehydes such as formaldehyde, glycol ethers such as ethyl glycol, and ketones such as methyl ethyl ketone. Butyl protects where other rubber materials only provide limited protection. The material is also environmentally friendly.

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Synthetic PVC gloves offer economical protection for workers exposed to chemicals, acids, fats, oils, abrasion and punctures. PVC provides excellent wet grip, but also a good dry grip. PVC does not contain substances such as proteins or accelerants, which can cause allergic reactions. PVC, therefore, is one of the most skin-friendly glove materials available.

Polyethylene (PE) Popular petroleum-based material for use in single-use clothing and thin single-use gloves. Offers economical protection for wearers and products, particularly in the food processing industry. Offers very low chemical protection. Environmentally friendly material. 103

Materials

The membrane is suited for any weather conditions and provides an impenetrable layer against wind and rain while allowing heat and perspi ration to escape. The PROTEX® is environmental friendly and a typical ”green” material with excellent non-toxic, recoverable and degradable properties. Look for the PROTEX® Membrane label on selected products:

Being one of the strongest synthetic fibres available (5 times stronger than steel on an equal-weight basis), Aramid (Kevlar) offers excellent cut resistance and a high level of thermal insulation. Abrasion resistance, however, is limited. Abrasion resistance is signifi cantly increased if the gloves have coated palms.

Bamboo is a plant (grass) which grows in Asia and Central and South America and is one of nature’s most sustainable and renewable resources. Bamboo is unique in that it can, for instance, grow 15 metres tall in only 6 months. The tallest bamboo plant can grow up to 40 metres tall and can grow by nearly half a metre per day.

Typhoon® is a super-strong polyethylene. This strong and light fibre is 15 times stronger than steel on an equal-weight basis, 40% stronger than Kevlar and offers excellent cut and abrasion resistance. Typhoon® does also provide superb chemical protection and has except ionally good breathable properties. An economical option for those wanting well-ventilated gloves with high resistance to cuts and sharp objects.

By means of a mechanical process, bamboo can be processed into fibres which are used in gloves as an alternative to cotton, nylon or polyester. As glove material, bamboo has superior properties. Bamboo is biodegradable, is extremely comfortable and soft, has very good breathable properties compared with cotton and synthetic materials, absorbs moisture and offers natural UV protection.

VFC VFC – Vinyle Foam Coating, is a patented process that is used when coating the palm and finger tips of the glove. This process incapsulates air molecules that repel liquids and ensures an incredible wet grip, as well as a good dry grip. The coating also provides a level of dampening effect limiting the influ ence of physical impact.

So why do we constantly abuse our hands by exposing them to injury and/or disabling skin conditions? Surely we should respect and care for them as we would any other valuable, irreplaceable precision tool.

Materials

Today’s technology boasts many great achieve ments but it has yet to perfect a machine to rival the hands. You only get one pair of hands – abuse them and you may lose them.

Unless the hand hazard can be avoided by the use of mechanical control measures (e.g. automation of a process so that hand contact with the hazard no longer exists) the method of control of a contact or dermal risk is likely to be via PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in the form of gloves. Gloves provide the final physical barrier be tween hazard and skin, but if the glove used is not made of a suitable material that will protect against the specific hazard then it may be worse than no glove at all. A thin disposable Natural Rubber glove that provides excellent protection against biological hazards may provide scant protection against many solvents found in laboratories. Likewise, a general purpose Riggers glove may afford excellent protection against handling hazards, such as abrasion, but will provide scant protection against thermal or chemical hazards. A Quick Overview of Leather and Leather Grades Leather is durable, pliable and supple and has exceptionally good breathable properties. Furthermore, it has the ability to absorb moisture, which means a leather glove rarely feels moist, but is instead dry and comfortable. Granberg uses only the finest leather grades in order to satisfy the most discerning wearer. Our leather grades also meet the EN 420 require ments for both chromium content and pH values.

Which Leather Type Is Best for You Cow grain leather is for those wanting the finest leather possible. Suitable for both light and heavy work. Absorbs moisture exceptionally well and keeps you dry. Art. 103.4190 Read more on page 14.

Leather withstands heat well, up to approx. 150°C. To soften the leather, chromium is added during the tanning process. This can cause allergic reactions in certain individuals. An upper limit is therefore specified for chromium (VI) content in leather / split leather gloves. EN 420 specifies this limit as max. 3 mg/kg chromium (VI).

Split, Nappa and Grain Leather – What’s the Difference? The properties of hide/skin varies, depending on which part of the animal the hide/skin comes from. Hide/skin from the sides has the highest durability. Hide/skin from the shoulders is also durable, but less than side split leather. Hide/skin from the belly is not durable due to its weak connective tissue.

Cow split leather is heat resistant and an excellent choice for work involving hot objects. Art. 102.9500 Read more on page 13.

Goatskin is very supple and durable. Despite being thinner and softer than split/suede leather, it is significantly stronger. A goatskin glove is equally suited to work in rough conditions as it is to work requiring a high level of dexterity. Art. 113.4190 Read more on page 15. Before the hide/skin is tanned, it is split into two layers. The outer layer is processed into grain or nappa leather, the inner layer is used for split or suede leather. Grain/nappa leather is made from the smooth surface of the hide/ skin and is durable, supple, sensitive and moisture absorbing. It therefore makes an excellent choice for e.g. assembly gloves, where the requirements to dexterity are high.

Pigskin is great for general use, and it breathes and becomes softer the more the gloves are used. Art. 101.9510 Read more on page 13.

Split/suede leather has a rougher surface than grain leather. It comes in a number of thicknesses and is heat resistant. For this reason, split leather is highly suitable for work gloves designed for rough handling or for welding gloves, which must withstand high temperatures and sparks.

According to European standard EN 388 a protective work glove should have a minimum of 8000 cycles to abrade through the glove material in order to achieve the highest possible level of abrasion resistance (Level 4).
