Life is worth exploring

G

rowing up on Fort Myers Beach the first thing that comes to my mind when someone mentions summer is the warm salt air sticking to my skin, the blaring sun hitting my face and the refreshing water of the Gulf of Mexico. I would spend hours on the beach only taking a break when hunger called and lunch was on my mind. Back then there weren’t video games, cable TV or the internet to keep me inside and away from the beach and enjoying the outdoors. As I’ve gotten older, and responsibilites have mounted, I’ve lost that draw of sand between my toes. I love the idea of pulling out my beach gear from the bottom of my storage closet, but who has the time? As you read through this month’s cover story “Taking it Back,” page 33, we’ll offer up diverse destinations that wash away all those excuses. From the beauty of Marco Island’s Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park to experiencing traditional Cuban cuisine at the Colombia Restaurant at St. Armands Circle in Sarasota, we have something for every taste. In Open Door, we highlight the home of Klaus and Cortina Kermel. This creative couple turned to Klaus’ expertise in construction to build a home on the Calooshatchee with a modern flair and a luxurious castle feel, page 76. We also share two Grand Faces subjects with international travel in common. Max Soto, co-founder of the Lostmans Collective, has been pursuing his passion for video production around the world. This self-described “production gypsy” has traveled the globe documenting life beyond our little slice of paradise. Claudia Gordon, owner of Naples Luxury Travel Advisors, helps her clients experience travel in the same way. From planning multi-generational trips for large families to intimate getaways for couples, she’s in the know for those looking for advenutre. Pages 16-19. As we publish our summer issue, all about exploring new places, I’m looking forward to exploring more of my new role as a grandmother. As I look past our Marilyn’s first birthday this July, I can see small hints of the happy little girl I hope she will continue to be and I look forward to being a good role model to her as my grandmother and mother were to me. Life is full of different experiences and exploring life … savor each one. See you in October.

Walk on the grass • If color reflected

emotion, then there is no way to describe this lively jasmine green other than cheerful. The gold-plated heel, intricate embroidery and embossed cheeky pineapple logo on the sole of the Bliss Ballet flat only adds to this shoe’s charm. Crafted from buttery suede, the $735 slip-on from Italian luxe line Aquazzura, features fun wraparound laces that not only keep the shoe securely in place, but are completely on-trend. Find your pair at aquazurra.com.

Earth luxe • Who

knew recycled glass could look so chic? This gorgeous cascading chandelier features circular frames dripping with individually cut pieces of green glass made from recycled bottles. The Currey & Company Vintner chandelier ($2,492) is framed with wrought iron and finished in gold leaf. Available at Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery, this family of chandeliers also comes in a round shape using the same glass.

I

s the grass greener on the other side? When it comes to the actual color green, it’s hard to answer, because this hue has an identity crisis. Is it the color of money, greed and jealousy? Or life, renewal and nature? Well, if you look at the array of gorgeous goodies on these pages, the answer is all the above. From a bountiful botany-inspired dress to a mean, green driving machine, this hue proves itself to be a master chameleon. So now that spring is sprung, we’re hoping that green will finally reveal its true color. — PATRICIA CARLSON

Ride envy

•You’ll make everyone on the road green with envy as you race by them in the all-new 2019 Audi RS 5 Sportback. This sport utility vehicle (yes, really!) won’t be available for sale until the second half of 2018, but that hasn’t stopped auto experts from already extolling its many virtues, like sleek design, stunning performance and sharp extras like huge wheels. Debuting at the 2018 New York International Auto Show in Gotland Green, a rich, deep and swanky hue, was a move as smart as the color is bold. 14 | SUMMER 2018 | grandeurmagazine.com

Green thumb • Every day is Earth Day in this darling V-neck Scuba shift dress from Indies, of France, ($329) available at Petunias of Naples. The cap sleeves and demure V-neck are totally contemporary, while the above-theknee hemline is perfect for a Sunday churchto-brunch affair. Keep accessories simple with this shift, and let the leaves do the talking.

THE VIDEO PRODUCTION

o you ever watch travel, adventure or nature videos and wonder who got that shot and how they did it? It’s possible Max Soto could be the guy behind some of those projects. He calls himself a “production gypsy” as he wanders around the globe, his camera gear in tow. He studied communications at Florida Gulf Coast University, where instead of writing a paper for some of his classes, he would do a 16 | SUMMER 2018 | grandeurmagazine.com

short film. He laughs about it now. “I thought it would be easier, but it always ended up being 100 times more work.” An internship at Dreamtime Entertainment with local filmmaker John Biffar groomed Max for big projects. He eventually started his own company with college friend Tim Willison, called Lostmans Collective. The name comes from a river system in the Everglades that’s the videographers’ favorite camping area. “When we started our business, our goal was to do nature and

wildlife projects,” Max says. The duo is about to finish a personally funded project about the Everglades. Look for a fall release. The easygoing cameraman is one of the fortunate ones who have been able to turn hobbies and passions into a career. Besides film, he has a love for travel instilled in him by his parents. “The best lesson my parents taught me was how important travel was to break perceptions of what is right or wrong,” Max says. Getting out and seeing the world fosters understanding of people and cultures, among other things, he says. He recalls one trip in particular. “I got so lost on a Paris subway that I finally just embraced it,” Max says. “I ended up in a pub and before I knew it, I was getting a tour from locals who were excited that I was interested in their country and culture. I didn’t speak any French, and they barely spoke English, but it was the coolest thing, making random friends. Isn’t that the purpose and awesomeness of travel?” He was also moved by the kindness of people in Iceland when he was traveling in harsh conditions to shoot the famous aurora borealis. Soto and partner landed early in the morning outside of Reykjavik with plans to drive to the West Fjords. It was February. What should’ve been an 8-hour drive took 16 due to blizzard conditions. “After three or four Red Bulls, we decided it was unsafe, so we pulled over and slept,” Max says. “We thought we were in a wide-open plain, but when we

woke up, we were in a canyon, with steep cliffs on both sides.” Stunned by their location and grateful for their safety, the Florida photogs caught their breath and then started filming. When Max got his first look at the northern lights, he remembers, “it was just ripping green and purple, like something out of a sci-fi movie. It was fierce and hard to believe you were actually looking at it.” For anyone who has ever dreamed of seeing the northern lights, Soto says, “it’s the coolest thing ever. It’s hard to describe. It’s one of those things that not only holds up to its reputation, it exceeds it.”designer and Jewelry of Port Royal On one end ofowner the spectrum, Soto climbed Jewelers William atop scaffolding in Manila, Philippines, to film Boyajian in Naples . artists creating murals on 20-story buildings for ArtBGC. On the other, he went underwater in Oahu, Hawaii, filming a free diver who swam with sharks. Max’s dream is to film from space. Stateside he spends a lot of time shooting online content for Publix. “They have the greatest creative team around,” he says. What does the professional think about the prolific posting by amateur videographers on social media? “I love it,” he says. He compares it to playing a guitar. “You have so many people doing it, but not everyone is a Jimmy Hendrix. The real talent will always shine through.” Cameras, batteries and lights — it’s expensive to work in the film industry, Max says. “So when someone can do something awesome with a phone, because that is what they have, good for them. Maybe they will find some funding to push it to the next level. That’s what is exciting about the industry. “If you couldn’t get into it before, now it’s more accessible, and that’s how art should be if you have the passion and desire.” Although Max has had some pretty amazing travel experiences, he says, “the more I travel and the more places I get to go, the more I appreciate where I’m at. I like Lee County. It’s a pretty spectacular place.”

C

laudia Gordon has met Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge in Great Britain. She has gone on numerous safaris in Africa and has traveled to exotic lands such as Sri Lanka and Malaysia. Yet her biggest quest is bringing travel adventures to others. As the owner of Naples Luxury Travel Advisors, she has created unique itineraries and personal travel experiences for clients for the past 35 years. Gone are the days when a travel agent simply books air travel and hotels. People do that online now. Instead Claudia is an advisor and planner. “Last year I had a couple that wanted me to plan a trip to Italy for their family of 21 people from ages 9 to 74,” Claudia recalls. “They wanted someone who knew Italy very well and had experience in planning multi-generational trips.” Claudia not only took care to match the family’s interests with the itinerary, she oversaw the smaller details such as making sure those with children had connecting hotel rooms. “We were planning a multi-generational trip with 10 children and 11 adults,” says Sharon Cirincione. “She just took it and made it work beautifully. She had some excellent ideas. She had everything organized before we got there

— every meal, every tour, every site. We just had the most amazing trip of our life.” Sharon and Jim Cirincione and their family experienced things they had never thought of before. “We had a gelato class in Florence,” Sharon says. “That was wonderful. Her restaurant choices were excellent. We had no idea what restaurants could take that many and not be a problem, and her hotel locations were perfect.” Claudia never intended to go into travel. The Detroit native got a degree in accounting from Western Michigan University and then got a job in the finance department of a hospital. Then her husband got a great job in Moscow, Idaho, and they moved to the small town. “I was looking for a job, and a local travel agency was hiring,” Claudia reminisces. “From there I never looked back. I had an instant passion for the industry.” She found it fascinating not only learning geography and how to book travel, but working with people to plan the perfect trip. “I learned very early what people wanted and the different types of travel people do,” she says. “Within six months of being hired, I was escorting groups to Hawaii. It was incredible. I had never thought of a travel agency as a career, but it just meshed. It has opened a world I never knew existed.” Claudia’s specialty is tailoring a trip to match everyone’s interests. She recently arranged a vacation for a client to Japan, and after discussing some of the children’s interests, she added a trip to a robotic museum, interactions with locals and a meeting with a samurai as part of the adventure. Claudia has planned many trips for Ann and Bill DeBruler. She arranged a unique vacation that took them to London for Christmas and Paris for New Year’s Eve with the couple’s four children and 12 grandchildren. “My granddaughter said the highlight of her life was being on the Eiffel Tower at midnight on New Year’s Eve,” Ann says. “That was a very, very neat experience and nothing we would have thought of. The hotel in London was the one that Kate and Pippa stayed in the night before her wedding. We would never have thought of anything like that.” Claudia arranged another trip for 21 of them to South Africa. The trip included safaris, sightseeing and a tour of Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.

“When you have a range of children, it is hard to keep everybody satisfied, but they were,” Bill adds. Ann and Bill recently went to Antarctica, another vacation designed by Claudia. “It was our seventh continent, so we definitely wanted to do it,” Ann says. Now Claudia is busy setting up a trip for 22 of them to Hawaii this Christmas. “She asks for your input, and then she arranges it from there,” Ann explains. “The boys are taking ukulele lessons, and the girls are taking hula lessons. That was Claudia’s idea. Then we will have a dinner and the kids will perform for their parents. She just does everything, and it makes it so easy.” Claudia’s experience not only comes from work behind a desk but from her own travels. She’s been all over the world, including India, Africa, Egypt, China, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, throughout Europe and the Caribbean. This summer she is taking a cruise above the Arctic Circle in Norway. “Any place I go I am always on high alert for activities, events, hotels, different experiences,” she says. “People today want to experience and meet local people. They want to learn along the way.” Claudia says cruises are very popular now in travel. “They have a lot of new cruise ships that are more comfortable with a lot of new features, like Wi-Fi,” she says. “They are popular because people can unpack and settle in. You can see many unusual destinations by ship.” Other hot spots now are Japan, the Baltics, Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica. For year-round residents of Southwest Florida, she says Iceland, Russia and Scandinavia are popular, because clients want to escape the heat. Claudia’s experience is recognized internationally. In March 2015, she was invited to the 105th anniversary of the Goring Hotel in London where she met Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge. This March she was invited to Florence, Italy, to a special summit of travel advisors. She is a certified travel consultant and has been on Travel and Leisure’s A-List of travel agents for five years. “I never thought this is what I would be doing, but I love it,” Claudia exclaims. “I want to match their interests to the place and give them the best experience that the destinations have to offer.”

grand | MODEL BEHAVIOR

Industrial

CHIC The Poinciana Cottage model incorporates a New York City vibe near Fifth Avenue South in Naples.

I

t could be a home on Fifth Avenue in New York, but instead it’s just a few steps away from Fifth Avenue South in Naples. Inside, the three-story house on Sixth Street has the look of a New York loft from the brick and iron work to the interior décor. “It is the closest thing to downtown living,” says developer/designer Kristen Williams. “I just felt it needed that urban feel, because you can just walk out and have your coffee, and the shops are right there. The style would not make sense in a neighborhood, but for a three-story walkup half a block from a coffee shop, I felt this belonged there. It is urban living in a single-family home. I did live in SoHo for a short period of time, and I love the idea of having your own little oasis in downtown.” The look begins with the brick work: a wall in

the kitchen overlooking the street, in the third-story loft. In the elevator, a glass back wall and iron gate allow a view of the brick as it ascends and descends. “In that loft style, there would be brick buildings on both sides, so I wanted that look,” Kristen explains. “I wanted it to be as authentic as you can create. I wanted you to feel that old style, repurposed look. It created the warmth that we wanted.” Industrial touches add to that city feeling. An industrial crank is the base of the sink in the downstairs half bathroom. Industrial piping creates the shelving above the washer and dryer. It continues with every window resembling old metal industrial windows. Black wood pane separators mimic metal muntin, or mullion, the vertical and horizontal bars in a window. The kitchen windows even open with an old-fashioned crank system.

The new Dominica model is in the contemporary style and features more earthy colors. The designer says he didn’t want the house to look like so many others so he looked for a more unique palette of colors.

grand | MODEL BEHAVIOR

Antiques found in unusual places give it that upscale, quirky city feel. An antique black library ladder with a track and wheels is a focal point in the kitchen. An antique bicycle serves as the base of a console table in the living room. “I found it at Alison Craig here in town,” Kristen says. “They have wonderful, interesting pieces. That bicycle inspired me. I bought it a year before I did the house, and I had it in the back of my mind to use it in a house with

that kind of feel. It is much more eclectic and much more urban.” Near the wine cabinet is an old black trunk on wheels. “It was an old black traveling truck, and it was made into a mobile bar,” she says. “If you have guests, you can roll it out into the living room or kitchen. It was functional but also fit with the style.” Another antique find she is proud of is the front of a 1968 light blue Jeep. “I carried that around with me for

probably a decade,” she says. “I had the headlights electrified so they work.” The open layout on the first floor stretches from the kitchen by the front of the house to the living room by the lanai. In the kitchen, you’ll find the signature red knobs of a Wolf stove, a subzero refrigerator with glass doors and a wine chiller. An informal table can double as an island, separating the kitchen from the dining area. Wooden barn doors slide across the

white elevator door, concealing it when it’s not in use. “The exposed headers are something you would see in an old industrial building,” Kristen says. “We wanted the warmth of the wood in the ceiling and the floor.” The dining area leads to the living room and an eating nook by the lanai. Instead of sliders, the glass doors on this house fold like an accordion, opening the home to the outdoor area,

An industrial chic vibe that would be right at home in New York City works well in downtown Naples, too. Black window framing, brick work and perfectly placed antiques carry the look, such as the blue 1968 Jeep grill mounted on the wall of the third-floor sitting room. Downstairs, the kitchen features a gas Wolf stove with its signature red knobs, brick work above the sink and a table that doubles as an island.

One of the designer’s favorite finds is a console table that has an antique bicycle as its base. The three-story home also features a wet bar on the way to the master bedroom, a sleek standalone tub and a smaller dining area off the living room. In the back, the house wraps around the pool in an L shape, giving its residents and guests complete privacy from the street.

which has a pool and spa with water features. There is also a sitting area tucked around a gas fireplace. With the house wrapping around the lanai, it is impossible to see the street, and even though it is just steps from the busy Fifth Avenue, it is private and quiet. At the top of the stairs on the second floor is a small sitting area with double French doors that lead to the second-floor balcony. Two guest bedrooms share a Jack and Jill bathroom. One bedroom is more sedate, decorated in cream colors. Glass doors lead to the wrap-around deck. The other guest room has a bed covered in red, white and blue. On a distressed-looking table is an old lime green typewriter. At the front of the house is a sitting room with a high, triangular, white shipboard ceiling. A chandelier resembles a cluster of antlers. A cowhide rug threads that rugged look. Here, you can look out the wall of windows or head out the glass door to the front balcony, which 24 | SUMMER 2018 | grandeurmagazine.com

overlooks the street. In the spring, the bright red blossoms of dozens of poinciana trees set a peaceful scene. Looking just a bit to the left is the view of Fifth Avenue. “At night, you can see the lights of Fifth Avenue,” says Mary Catherine. “It’s very pretty.” At the opposite end of the second floor is the master suite. A wet bar stretches along the hallway leading to the room while a floor-to-ceiling mirror at the end of the hall makes the small space seem much larger. Inside the master bedroom, a large canopy bed sits under a raised triangleshaped white shipboard ceiling. “There is a lot in that small space, so high ceilings are important to bring in light and make you feel like you are not in a small space,” Kristen says. Two sets of French doors lead to a balcony that overlooks the pool. The master bathroom is a combination of modern comforts and antique look.

The shower doors have the same wood inserts as the windows. Lanterns on the floor and a towel rack that looks like an old ladder continue the look. Yet there is a sleek stand-alone tub and a spacious shower that have a more modern tone. Heading up to the third floor, the white walls are splashed with the colors of an unusual piece of art. Thousands of colorful magazine pages rolled into tiny pieces and stuck together cause visitors to stop and admire the work. “I loved it for not only the texture but the colors,” Kristen says. “There are so many primary colors like you find when you walk upstairs. It is foreshadowing what you see upstairs.” At the top of the house is a sitting room that can also be used as a bedroom. It has its own balcony, which overlooks the pool and rooftops. The room is decorated in bright colors using fun objects to add splashes of orange, red, yellow and blue, such as orange water skis, a croquet set with colorful mallets and an antique

red and yellow pulley. It’s focal point: the bright blue Jeep front on the wall. “That room, I just envisioned it as a bohemian loft where someone plays the guitar and hangs out surrounded by a lot of fun things,” Kristen says. “I found all of the artifacts locally.” With its proximity to busy Fifth Avenue, there is a constant stream of people coming to view the home. Debbie and Doug Hess were recent visitors. “We stay here for three months, and we walk everywhere, and wherever there is a model, we walk in,” Debbie says. “This is by far the nicest we have seen. … It is beautiful, unique and highend. It is a different look, but it fits in with the area. I’m blown away by this house.” The five-bedroom, four-and-a-half bathroom Poinciana Cottage has a twocar garage. It spans 3,338 square feet under air and a total of 4,569 square feet. The furnished model is priced at $4.699 million.

Many things in Southwest Florida have changed post Hurricane Irma, including the chef and menu at the award-winning Sale e Pepe at the Marco Beach Ocean Resort on Marco Island. The staff is international, and their service is outstanding. The restaurant with its arches and high ceilings looks Old World but with a modern touch, making you feel as if you could be almost anywhere in the world. However, the stunning beach view gives the Southwest Florida location away. Sale e Pepe’s Italian born chef, Antonio Minichiello, moved to the area from Las Vegas in the weeks following the hurricane. The restaurant and resort were closed, so transi-

tioning into a new menu was perfect as far as timing was concerned. The food is authentic Italian with a modern twist. “I give to the guests a fine dining experience, so if they close their eyes it’s like a trip through Italy,” Antonio says. Many of the products served here are imported from the motherland, the pasta and gelato made in house. If you want to experience the upscale food and drink but are casual in attire, the bar is spacious and fun. Fresh herbs and juices are used in the specialty cocktails crafted with an Italian twist. Take for instance the Sardinia Cosmo. A more sophisticated version of the traditional cosmo, it has rosemary syrup, fresh berries soaked in a limoncello reduction, citrus vodka and Cointreau, with an orange twist. The Pear Sage Martini is sweet and savory with absolute pear, fresh muddled sage, St. Germain Elderflower and fresh lemon juice. You’ll also find Negroni, Sazerac and Aperol, and there is a selection of grappa and digestives for after dinner.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Agnolotti filled with pecorino, ricotta and wild pepper then topped with baby calamari is a Sale e Pepe signature. • Save room for the Lingotto al Cioccolato: chocolate ganache in a hazelnut crust with sea salt caramel and gold leaf. • Chef Antonio Minichiello puts a modern twist on authentic dishes representing all regions of Italy. • Battuta di Manzo is a beautiful presentation of beef tartare topped with parmigiana and a crispy egg yolk. • Sale e Pepe’s bar is a casual oasis in the middle of the fine dining restaurant.

The wine list is impressive with more than 500 selections and has been recognized with a coveted Wine Spectator Best of Excellence Award. After ordering drinks, we settled in with the chef ’s version of caprese. Small kumato tomatoes are blanched, skinned and cored, then filled with burrata and baked. It’s dressed with aged Modena balsamic, basil seed vinaigrette and extra virgin olive oil pearls, a nice change from the classic preparation. The beef tenderloin tartar appetizer is topped with a breaded and fried egg yolk, like a delicious present. Fresh and savory, the presentation is appealing. When it comes to presentation, however, one of our favorites was the Anelli al Vetro, served in a squatty jar, like one you might store dried pasta in. Only this jar was full of cooked, round, calamarata pasta mixed with shrimp, scallops, langoustine and artichoke in seafood broth. When you open the top, a savory aroma wafts

across the table; you can’t help but salivate at the smell, and it delivers in spades when it comes to flavors. One of Chef Minichiello’s favorites is Uovo Bio al Tartufo. “We grew up with this sous vide egg — it makes me happy,” he says. The organic egg is on top of a decadent yet light layering of crispy Parmesan and prosciutto, foam and black truffle. Break the egg yolk, dig to the bottom for the crispy breading and the flavors explode in your mouth. Meat lovers will be happy with the hearty choices on Sale e Pepe’s menu with things like Ovation Farm lamb chops, aged Kinnealey rib-eye and tenderloin, and Black Angus New York Strip. The veal tenderloin comes with fennel pollen jus, and it’s so tender you’ll only use your knife to look polite. Seafood and fish also figure prominently on the

expansive menu. The wild salmon in prosecco sauce is cooked with the most beautiful crunchy skin, almost like the top of a crème brûlée. Speaking of dessert, the moist and spongy tiramisu is cut in pieces and artfully laid horizontally on the plate. The soufflé is perfect for a chocolate lover, not too rich or too sweet. My favorite is the chef ’s spin on the traditional cannoli listed on the menu as Ananas, or pineapple in many Old-World languages. Instead of a crisp pastry shell, marinated pineapple slices envelope the delicious ricotta filling. It’s a beautifully delicate finish to a big meal. Sale e Pepe is a special place, a memorable dining experience with style, ambience, superb food and an impeccable view. — Sale e Pepe is located at 480 South Collier Blvd., Marco Island. Pangola property that was being traipsed by unauthorized cattle, wildlife and lumber poachers. “It was like the Wild West,” he says. The property is a biodiverse home to both common and endangered species, including green and scarlet macaws, tapir, three species of monkeys, poison dart and red-eyed tree frogs, and jaguar, and verdant flora. “The focus was reforestation, to replant the trees and let them grow in value, like an annuity,” explains Henk, 58, a long-time real estate investor and seller. “You’re doing something that enhances the environment, not detrimental. We have done a lot of preservation and enhanced the environment tremendously, so a lot of species came back. It’s night and day.”

Rustic rainforest resort Cinco Ceibas was named for five old-growth ceibas trees on the property. One was so large,

Jackie explains its girth is equivalent to 40 people holding hands with arms outstretched to wrap its diameter. They estimate it could be 500 years old, and the resort’s mile-long boardwalk — said to be Central America’s longest elevated boardwalk through primary rainforest — goes around it. Henk worked with officials to obtain private reserve status from the National System of Conservation Area. There are a few “simple but cute” cottages (former farmhouses) on the property for overnight lodging, which can be rented for one-, three- and five-night stays or customizable retreats for groups of four to 12. Five-day yoga retreats are available that include organic spa treatments, meditation, massage and locally sourced meals and juices prepared in the open-air Cinco Fusion Café. Jackie says the cottages are booked for family vacations, research, honeymoons, eco-adventures and photo expeditions.

For overnight or day visitors, activities include horseback riding with views of volcanoes, kayaking the Rio Cuarto, boardwalk strolls and old-fashioned oxcart tours. There is an on-site chef. Jackie says the fare has a focus on local dishes fused with Thai or Indian flavors, and the cuisine can be tailored to visitors’ desires or lifestyles: vegan, family-style, gourmet, themed, detox or formal. “We work together with them to customize their retreats,” she says. The café and lounge serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as coffee, tea, natural juices, smoothies, water, Coca-Cola products, beer and wine. Jackie, 52, earned a skincare license five years ago, and designed and developed the resort’s wellness program. Yoga, spa treatments and massages take place in a large, open-air pavilion with outside shower. Jackie developed the facials, wraps and scrubs created from local ingredients. The café, yoga pavilion and a lounge area overlook the Rio Cuarto. There is no air-conditioning, but the temperature is naturally regulated and screening allows fresh air into the cottages, which do not have televisions, though Wi-Fi is available at the café and lounge. “It’s a destination; you’re there for a reason. There are only 300 people that live in the area. We want to keep the cultural identity,” Jackie says. “We’re not putting an American or European hotel there.”

wall units and shelves, and furniture pieces, such as matching headboards and nightstands, and coffee tables. Jackie was a volunteer set and costume designer for The Naples Players at Sugden Community Theatre for 11 years beginning in the late 1990s, took a hiatus, and has recently returned. Her BouTeak accents are on display on the theater’s lobby bar tops. These days, she also creates a large painting that reflects each production, and it hangs in the lobby for premieres. Half of the sale proceeds are donated to the nonprofit theater group. Jackie, who has worked in

interior design and was privately mentored in painting by a retired art professor from the Rhode Island School of Design, creates each play painting in a different style. “It looks like a different artist painted them, so it’s fun,” she says. If they don’t sell, the paintings go on display in the BouTeak showroom. “I’m always working on a painting,” Jackie says. Working in the theater realm has been her “art capital,” she says, before turning to teak designs. Teak is prized for its striking grain and durability. Thousand-year-old beams still hold up in temples and palaces in India and other parts of the world, and it has been used in building ships, bridges and blinds and louvres due to its dimensional stability. At Cinco Ceibas, there are two master craftsmen who are assisted by helpers. Henk, who is originally from Amsterdam and earned a degree in horticulture, says teak trees that he planted are hand-selected to be culled. A former barn/pineapple packing plant onsite has been converted into the woodworking factory. He imported a sawmill and three driers — wood needs to be cured up to 10 months depending on species and thickness — from the United States. Jackie calls their interior pieces as “seed to boutique,” noting that BouTeak stands apart due to its promotion of sustainability, handcrafted workmanship and unique customization. “Everyone can get anything on the internet, but it’s mass-produced. The former Oakmont Model in Villa d’Este at Miromar Lakes Beach & Golf Club

GRANDEUR | SUMMER 2018 | 43

Miromar Lakes’ Villa d’Este Elevates Southwest Florida’s Golf Lifestyle If Stu Barr isn’t playing Miromar Lakes Golf Club’s Signature championship course, chances are he’s still immersed in the game, watching the action along the 18th hole from the lanai of his Golf Villa. Since Stu and his wife Kathy moved into the designer-furnished Oakmont model in the Villa d’Este neighborhood in November, he’s happily discovered a golf-and-go lifestyle. “I’m a big golfer,” Stu said. “I play four or five times a week and I love to sit and watch from the lanai. It’s such a beautiful setting.” With landscaping and lawn maintenance provided, Villa d’Este is ideal for busy golfers who prefer to spend the day on Southwest Florida’s only Arthur Hills Signature championship course and enjoying the resort-style amenities of Miromar Lakes Beach & Golf Club, the #1 Community in the USA. Floorplans created by Randall Mitchell Custom Homes offer options for golf cart garages and are designed to showcase the vistas – sweeping views across a fountained lake to stands of trees and a tapestry of blue water, green fairways and white sand bunkers. Dramatic sunsets are also included: The gated enclave of only a dozen single-family home sites faces west and is adjacent to the award-winning Tuscan-inspired Golf Clubhouse. “We spend a lot of time at the clubhouse,” Stu said. “Everyone is really friendly, especially the staff. They know your name and your preferences. It’s an intimate atmosphere.” Discovering Miromar Lakes and its ideal golf style was serendipitous. The couple visited the day before they were scheduled to return home after scouring Naples. “We kept hearing about this place called Miromar Lakes,” Stu recalled. “When we walked into the model Kathy’s eyes lit up. It was fully furnished; she

didn’t have to go through the decorating process.” The Barrs were equally impressed upon passing through Miromar Lakes’ main entry gates and seeing the 700-acre aquamarine Lake Como stretching between white-sand beaches. “What really jumped out at us was that Miromar Lakes is not just a golf community,” Stu said. “It offers something for everyone.” Miromar Lakes, the recipient of the National Association of Home Builders’ prestigious Gold Awards for Best Community and Best Clubhouse, offers a vacation-every-day lifestyle. Residents swim, boat, paddle, sail, waterski and fish in the freshwater lake and enjoy a dynamic social scene and waterfront dining at the open pavilion Blue Water Beach Grill. The adjoining Beach Club offers a 10,000-square-foot zero-edge infinity pool...events. European wellness spa, full-service beauty salon, fitness center and a year-round calendar of events. Miromar Lakes also has a seven-court Tennis Center, bocce and volleyball courts and outdoor fitness stations. Concierge Services enhances the lifestyle by arranging housekeeping, grocery shopping, home inspections and an array of other services. New floorplans in Villa d’Este offer opportunities for larger pools, enhanced summer kitchens and coastal contemporary, West Indies and Mediterranean architecture. Homes start at 2,400 square feet, are completely customizable and feature luxury finishes and large main living areas. Discover the ultimate golfers’ enclave at Miromar Lakes Beach & Golf Club. THE LITTLE OL’ Master Pinstriper Alex Olivera lends a steady hand and artistic touch to some of the world’s most prestigious vehicles.

Alex Olivera finishes a line on a car at a shop in Naples.

GRANDEUR | SUMMER 2018 | 51

Alex Olivera with his 1937 Ford sedan delivery vehicle at a shop in Naples.

STORY BY STEPHANIE BORDEN | PHOTOS BY JUSTIN GILLILAND atching Master Pinstriper Alex Olivera hand-paint a pinstripe on a million-dollar antique automobile, you are compelled to hold your breath as the brush makes its first contact. But you instantly relax, because his hands are as steady as a brain surgeon’s, a blend of care and confidence. He carries a collection of striping and lettering brushes, some sable and others made from the tails of Siberian blue squirrels, selected because the cold climate makes the squirrels’ hair grow longer than other animals. He stores the brushes tenderly in baby oil. Alex is loyal to the 1 Shot brand of oil-based paint that is preferred by professional pinstripers. And for very exclusive projects, Alex applies 24-karat gold leaf using an extensive six-stage process. In an era when some car owners decorate their vehicles by applying vinyl tape or decals, Alex is a purist. “Hand-pinstriping has been around for more than a century, dating back to the decoration of early auto52 | SUMMER 2018 | grandeurmagazine.com

mobiles, trucks, carriages, fire and farm equipment, railroad safes, telephones and sewing machines,” Alex says. “Modern, or ‘old-school,’ pinstriping was introduced to the hot rod, custom and motorcycle crowd in the early 1950s by Ken Howard, who called himself Von Dutch.” Alex grew up in Minnesota, the oldest of 11 children, and designed programs and posters for his high school’s theater productions. While studying art and advertising at the University of Minnesota, he got a night job at a Clark service station, where his manager asked if he could paint the station’s glass windows with announcements about prices and promotions. Alex took on the challenge, hand-painting backward so the words could be read by customers driving up to the gas pumps. His manager asked his boss to come see the display, and Alex was hired on the spot to paint the glass windows of all the Clark stations in the area. When he moved to San Diego in the late 1970s, Alex met Von Dutch and Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, who created the fierce Rat Fink character as a middle finger to Mickey Mouse. Roth had worked as an artist at America’s first theme park, Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, California, which dominated the market until Walt Disney swept in with Disneyland in 1955.

grand | RIDE

Roth attracted a group of talented pinstripers, airbrushers and custom painters, including Alex, who is one of the survivors of the original group who attended Roth’s annual Rat Fink reunions. In California, Alex pinstriped Rolls-Royces owned by Hollywood stars including Zsa Zsa Gabor and George Hamilton. When Britain’s Prince Philip visited the United States, Alex was chosen to hand-paint the Royal Family crest on the doors of a restored classic black Rolls-Royce provided for the Duke of Edinburgh’s tour. Alex’s artistry also is on display at The Revs Institute in Naples, home to a 1912 Hispano Suiza car raced by King Alfonso of Spain, and on a Concord Coach made in 1866, displayed at the San Diego Natural History Museum, site of the turn-of-the-century World’s Fair. Another career highlight for Alex was handpainting the numbers and graphics on the historic 1966 Ford GT40, which was driven to victory that year by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon of New Zealand in the grueling 24-hour Le Mans race. The GT40 was the first car to beat Ferrari in the prestigious competition, held every year since 1923 in France. Alex has restored a 1937 Ford Sedan Delivery vehicle featuring his nickname, “The Little Ol’ Linemaker” applied in 24-karat gold leaf to promote his business, Real Pinstriping, at auto and motorcycle shows. Start-to-finish photographs of a 1957 Ferrari Zagato “Bubbletop” and other examples of his artistry can be viewed on his website at realpinstriping.com. Alex and his wife, Donna, summer in Massachusetts, but they will return to Naples this fall. grand | WINE

For time with family and friends These picks are perfect for reminiscing and contemplating life with the people you love.

Chateau Mosse Rivesaltes 1945 (over $200 or $20 a glass at Veranda E) » Veranda E has the largest dessert wine list by the glass in the United States with 54 different ones. This one is high in alcohol, not too sweet, and I would have it at the beginning not the end. You need something to stimulate the appetite at the start of dinner; it’s something we do in my home in Mexico. It reminds me of when I was a kid. My dad always had a bottle of Jerez (sherry) in the cabinet, and when he wasn’t home, I would sip a little. This has the same light brown color and flavors of figs and coffee. Made in 1945, it was left in the barrel until 2014.

Landmark Damaris Reserve Chardonnay 2016 ($35) » Created as an homage to the winery’s founder, Damaris Deere Ford, this is a barrel selection made from some of Landmark’s best chardonnay grapes. I have a dear friend by the name of Damaris, and in honor of her recent birthday, we decided to try this wine again. It had been years since I had first sipped it, and I couldn’t remember if I liked it based on its name or its merits; turns out it was both. It spends 15 months aged sur-lie, then is bottled unfiltered. It’s a wine full of beautiful creamy citrus flavors with some pineapple and spice. I had it with delicate bass in a miso butter sauce and it was delightful.

M

ay is a special time. Not only do we celebrate moms, but we also officially kick off the summer grilling season with Memorial Day. Then there is summer travel, exploring the U.S. and countries abroad, if not in person, then through wine. For help in putting together this month’s Grand Case, I visited Marco Garcia, general manager of Veranda E at Hotel Escalante, just off Fifth Avenue South on Third Street in Naples. He takes great pride in finding small production, hard-to-find wines and is passionate about educating his guests on them. We sat under a poolside trellis dripping with flowering vines, at Veranda E, talking fondly about the wines, their stories, and the family, friends and experiences they prompted us to recall. It reminded me of how magical fermented grapes can be, not only for elevating a dining experience but also for bringing people together.

Gina Birch is the wine columnist for The NewsPress in Fort Myers. Follow her social media here: Twitter: @ginabirch Facebook: GinaBirch

Tabarrini Montefalco Sagrantino Passito 2010 ($70 range) » From Umbria in Italy, it smells like a port, it looks like a port and tastes like a port — but it’s not a port. This is a great way to conclude a meal. It’s more rustic in style with hazelnut, almond, mocha, dark chocolate — like chocolate covered cherries — dense and chewy. It’s a long finish; the wine is still talking to you long after you’ve swallowed it. To me this is a wine to meditate with and contemplate at the end of the night. It’s good stuff.

Santos Brujos Tempranillo, Valle de Guadalupe Baja 2013 ($40 range) » When I first tasted this wine, I tried it blind and had no idea what it was. This is 100-percent tempranillo from what we call the “Mexican Napa” or Valle de Guadalupe. It’s 100-percent organic and made by the same people from Remirez de Ganuza; they produce the best wine in Mexico. This has an aromatic bouquet, but with flavors such as espresso, cocoa and dark fruit with a very long finish. That is what I love in wines, a nice long finish.

MARCO GARCIA Guest columnist, general manager of Veranda E at Hotel Escalante

Groth Reserve Cabernet 2014 ($140) » For a younger Napa cab this one is oh-soapproachable and drinking so nicely, especially after it has had an hour or so to open in the glass — if you can be that patient. If you can really be patient, pick up a bottle and let it age for a year or two more. But for now, it is impressive to share with someone you love or really like, while solving the problems of the world over this glass full of deep wine with dark fruit, spice and medium tannins.

Stella Prosecco ($15) » Prosecco is known as a “welcome wine” in Italy, a great way to welcome friends and family. Bubbles are a celebration, but should not be reserved for a special occasion. Every day we spend with the ones we love is worthy of a celebration. This one is feminine and screams spring with its colorful labeling; it makes me want to book a girls’ trip to Italy. With tiny bubbles and hints of pear and green apple, put a nice chill on the bottle and enjoy on its own or in a sparkling cocktail with a dash of juice or chunk of fresh fruit.

Meiomi Rosé ($24.99) » Rosé every day! I hate to stereotype, but this pretty, pink salmon color looks like spring, and it’s a wine I want to sip while sitting on the front porch with my mom on Mother’s Day. It looks classy and tastes classic. With flavors of summer fruits, such as strawberry and watermelon, there’s also some citrus, and it has nice acidity to boot. It’s a wine that’s a perfect prelude to summer and great for spring, whether sipping on its own or with some crudité.

Sojourn Chardonnay Durell Vineyard (Under $50) » Right now, this is my favorite chardonnay on my list besides Venge Moldanado, but I’m waiting for the new vintage of that one. I think Sojourn’s Durell Vineyard is one of the top in Sonoma for what it produces — great fruit. And its price is reasonable. You don’t have to spend a fortune to have a great California chardonnay. The oak is there, but it doesn’t coat your mouth. The wine is good by itself and with food. I get great feedback from others, so I know it’s not just me. Only 400 cases were made.

Shooting Star Blue Franc 2014 ($14.99) » This is one for the wine geek, the person who is looking for something unlike anything they’ve had in a while. Made from a grape most commonly found in Austria, Blaufränkisch or Lemberger, it’s also grown in some parts of Washington. It smells Old World and has flavors of cumin and raspberry. If you want to stump someone who knows wine, brown bag it and have them guess. I’d be surprised if they come up with the correct answer.

Remirez de Ganuza, Reserva Blanco ($40 range) » A white rioja, barrel aged, they only make a little of this wine, and it is not easy to find. The winemaker is from Mexico, and makes wine in both California and Spain, some of the top riojas in the world in fact. A blend of malvasia and viura grapes, to me it’s like tasting a refined chardonnay. This is a wine with good fruit, good acid and is really good for Southwest Florida.

Trivento Golden Reserve Malbec 2015 ($21) » I don’t have to remind anyone reading this that even though it’s spring, the hot and humid dawg days of summer are just around the corner. A great escape can be found in Mendoza, Argentina. Our summer is their dry season, and July is one of the coolest months of the year. This, arguably, is where some of the best malbec in the world is made, and it’s one of my fondest wine trips. This particular one would be considered a “cru” in the malbec world and, with concentrated dark fruit, is right on for your grilled meats.

Clos Pissarra El Ramon 2010 (under $40) » The wine speaks for itself. It’s a big wine without a big price. Made in Priorat, Spain, the name means “slate.” Only 875 cases were made by Emmanuel Kemiji, he’s one of only seven Master Sommeliers to pass the test the first time. This one is good with meat. Made from grenache, carignan, cabernet sauvignon, and syrah, you get a lot of that dark color and dark fruit, very dark fruit. I like the mocha and chocolate flavors and the leather box; you smell it before you even taste it.

*Prices listed can vary. Some of these wines can be found in local wine shops, others are limited production and may require shipment from the producers themselves. NP-0000947509

IN Kiki, a terrier mix, is in style and in harmony with graphic designer Tim Kling.

Kiki’s owner Tim Kling sits next to Kiki outside of their home in Naples.

iki has a style about her. The 5-year-old terrier mix (Westie, Jack Russell and dachshund) puts on the ritz with fanciful outfits and collars, topped with a wiry curl of locks on the top of her black-and-white head. It was love at first sight when Naples-based graphic designer Tim Kling found her on Craigslist — the first time he’d ever selected and picked up his own canine companion. She was 6 weeks old. “That was pretty special,” he says. “I was just looking around and I wasn’t expecting too much. Then her mugshot popped up.” When they met, she gave Tim lots of puppy kisses. “She’s a serial kisser” who likes to lick other dogs, too, he says. A designer with a sharp eye and fashion sense, Tim, of course, is the one who adorns Kiki in pink and velvet harnesses and has dressed her up for special Humane Society fundraiser dog galas, one time topping her outfit off with a formal cameo. “She’s pampered with clothing,” he says. “It’s fun to dress her up.” Kiki, weighing in at 10 pounds, did a modeling stint for advertisement for the upscale master-planned Talis Park golf club community in Collier County, but it’s not her main line of work. “We needed a dog, and she was there — and cute,” notes Tim. “She’s got a lot of pep and personality…but she’s the sweetest dog.” In addition to her wardrobe, Kiki is spoiled with Tim’s constant presence in his home office, multiple walks a day, regular visits with the groomer and plenty of treats. She has regular playdates with a neighborhood dog that Tim frequently babysits. “They play and hang out together in the afternoon,” he says. Another neighbor takes Kiki in when Tim goes out of town; Kiki has never been boarded or sent to a strange place. “She’s always been with people who know her and love her,” he says. Kiki also has a special talent: When Tim sings, she joins along with him. “I will sing very badly and off-key, and she will howl with me. It’s the cutest thing,” he says. “I sound like such an idiot. She’ll sing as long as I sing. It’s the dog howling at the moon thing. After she’s done, she wants to kiss me. That’s how it all goes down.”

It’s time for your getaway to this favorite chain of islands in the bright blue sea.

STORY BY JENNIFER THOMAS early eight months since Hurricane Irma ravaged the Keys as a Category 4 storm, the islands are nearly fully operational. All 10 state parks are open. Nearly all major Florida Keys attractions are open. Only two beaches closed for restoration. And all but one hotel has reopened in Key West; it’s slated to reopen in the fall. Tourism is thriving and the Keys are welcoming visitors. “Lodging properties and other tourism facilities in the Keys have made an amazing rebound since last fall,” says Jim DeKeyrel, director of sales for The Florida Keys & Key West, the Monroe County Tourist Development Council. “We’re seeing demand return, helped by cold temperatures in the north.” This Caribbean-style destination is waiting to be discovered, or perhaps re-discovered, by Florida residents, no passport required, not even an airline ticket. Just a few hours away via car or ferry, Key West and its neighboring islands are where many Southwest Florida residents retreat during the summer for lobstering, leisurely relaxation, sport fishing, snorkeling and diving — all with a barefoot luxury feel. Just a short drive along the Florida Keys Overseas Highway and Southwest Florida residents are transported into an island oasis without ever leaving the continental United States, says Ashley Serrate, spokesperson for the tourism council. “It’s a quick, fun getaway for locals, and each region has something unique to offer.” Key West has been a summer home for the Fort Myers Bailey family for over 15 years. “What is most appealing to us is the fabulous fishing, diving and snorkeling. The clear blue waters and tropical fish are amazing in contrast to the waters here in Fort Myers,” Jana Bailey says. Before buying their condo in Key West, Jana says she and her family enjoyed staying at several

bed-and-breakfast-style inns. “Each and every inn is unique, and we never found one that we didn’t love. Most all come with their own little splash pool and tropical gardens,” she describes. “We always booked through Suzie at Key West Accommodations. Most all of the bed-and-breakfasts are within walking or biking distance to Duval Street.” During Cape Coral resident Stacey Spencer’s last three years of trips to the Keys, she and her family stayed at resorts and houses. “We enjoyed our stays at the different resorts, but we really wanted to experience the Keys lifestyle with multiple families and complete freedom, so we opted on renting a house for our last trip,” Stacey says. “The house gave us the flexibility for having the boat in the backyard — important as we would boat multiple times during the day, come in for a swim or a bite to eat and head back out and even boat to a tiki-style restaurant in the evening.” Stacey explains she used HomeAway.com to rent the home in the Keys but also perused VRBO.com to select the size of home, location and amenities her family and the other traveling companions were hoping to experience. “The house rental experience did not disappoint,” she says. “From the pool to the space, we could really relax and just enjoy ourselves. There are so many beautiful homes to select, but we found that booking early is helpful, as we discovered some families will book a year out.” While most of Stacey’s vacation time was spent either on top of or beneath the water, she and her guests did venture into Key West to explore the activities, including the sunset celebration on Mallory Square, dining at some of the fabulous restaurants and just taking in the entire scene. “Of course, a trip to the Keys would not be complete without experiencing dessert at the Square Grouper,” she says. When visiting the Keys, Ashley recommends a visit to The Earnest Hemingway Home & Museum (where Ernest Hemingway wrote some of his most famous works), a day on the water with Fury Water Adventures, the Literary Walking Tour and the Southernmost Food Tasting & Cultural Walking Tour. Ernest Hemingway’s Key West home

“Visitors can also explore the rich cultural history and culinary delights that Key West has to offer,” Ashley advises. “In Key West, definitely pay a visit to Latitudes on Sunset Key or Hot Tin Roof at Ocean Key Resort. Some other great suggestions include Salute on the Beach and Louie’s Backyard. But there are fabulous restaurants throughout the destination, including Chef Michael’s in Islamorada, Square Grouper in the lower keys and Sol by the Sea at the Playa Largo Resort in Key Largo.” Key West is appealing for its famous Mallory Square at sunset, Duval Street for shopping and nightlife, and the multitude of tourist attractions, Jana says. “However, to fully appreciate the Florida Keys, you must get out on the water,” she says. “The Keys are not known for sandy white beaches like the west and east coast of Florida. We enjoy finding a remote sandbar and anchoring for the day.” Another day trip for visitors staying in Key West is an excursion to the Dry Tortugas. “There are two ways to get to the Dry Tortugas,” Ashley explains. “Via ferry aboard the Yankee Freedom and by seaplane with Key West Seaplane Charters. The Yankee Freedom is a full-day excursion that includes breakfast and lunch as well as complimentary snorkel equipment and a fully narrated tour of Fort Jefferson.

The seaplane offers morning and afternoon half-day excursions as well as a full-day excursion that provide stunning aerial views as well as complimentary snorkel equipment.” The Dry Tortugas are worth the trip either on your own boat or charter boat, Jana agrees. “In the summer, it is very hot, and there are no facilities or food or drink there,” Jana says. “No fresh water, so that’s how it got its name (Dry) and Tortugas (Spanish for turtle) for all the sea turtles commonly seen there.” Of course, a highlight for going to the Keys in the summer is mini lobster season (July 25-26) and the opening of the regular lobster season (this year, August 6 to March 31, 2019). “Mini lobster season is crazy! This is a very crowded time in the keys and only for the ones that enjoy the thrill of the hunt amongst hundreds of others,” Jana adds. Stacey says the thrill of the hunt for lobsters is exhilarating. “We lobstered for our first time last summer, and we were hooked immediately,” she says. “There is something about the search and the chase to capture your first lobster.” Next trip to the Keys, Stacey says the only thing she would do differently is “to stay longer.”

First Florida facility to offer Heartflow FFR-CT Scan Radiology Regional Center is excited to offer a new, non-invasive test for coronary artery disease designed to help physicians develop the best treatment plan for each individual patient. The Heartflow FFR-CT Scan (or fractional flow reserve by computed tomography) is a noninvasive test that offers patients and their physicians insight on both the extent of coronary artery blockages, as well as the impact on blood flow to the heart muscle. The first step in the Heartflow FFRCT process is the acquisition of a high quality CT Coronary Angiogram, an exam that Radiology Regional has been performing for several years. “Without a high quality CT coronary angiogram, the Heartflow FFR-CT analysis cannot be performed,” says Dr. Edward Danehy, Chief of cardiovascular imaging at Radiology Regional Center. Using the images obtained from the CT Coronary Angiogram, the Heartflow technology creates a personalized, digital 3D model of each patient’s coronary arteries. Powerful supercomputers solve millions of

68 | SUMMER 2018 | grandeurmagazine.com

complex equations to evaluate the impact of any artery blockages on blood flow to the heart muscle. Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. The disease develops when plaque builds up in the vessel wall and narrows the arteries supplying blood flow to the heart. These narrowings or blockages can reduce blood flow to the heart, resulting in chest pain, heart attacks and death. Depending on the degree and extent of narrowing of the arteries, patients might be treated with medicine, angioplasty and stenting or coronary artery bypass grafting. Studies have shown the need to improve the accuracy of noninvasive tests used to evaluate coronary artery disease. A recent study of over 400,000 patients from over 650 US hospitals found that over half of the patients with suspected coronary artery disease did not have a significant blockage at invasive coronary angiography. In most all of these patients, the Heartflow FFR-CT Scan likely could have safely eliminated the need for the

invasive angiogram. “The Heartflow FFR-CT Scan represents an extraordinary advancement in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease,” said Dr. Danehy. “Until very recently, physicians have been faced with either using tests we knew were not always accurate or putting a patient through an invasive procedure, just to determine if they needed another invasive procedure. The Heartflow FFR-CT Scan completely changes this approach, providing a both noninvasive and highly accurate evaluation of coronary artery blockages and their impact on blood flow to the heart using a non-invasive CT scan. This will help us determine the appropriate management for each individual patient with coronary heart disease. I believe the Heartflow FFR-CT Scan will revolutionize the way we diagnose and manage coronary artery disease moving forward.” Dr. Danehy is not the only one favorably impressed with the impact of the Heartflow FFR-CT Scan. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services

(CMS) have recently issued a positive coverage decision for the technology. Florida Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna and Aetna also have positive coverage decisions for the technology. In all, up to 185 million insured lives are now covered for the Heartflow FFR-CT Scan technology in the United States. Radiology Regional Center is proud to be the first in Florida and only provider in Southwest Florida to offer to the community the Heartflow FFR-CT Scan as part of our expanding, cutting-edge cardiovascular imaging services.

Understanding the facts about Laser Cataract Surgery Recently, some surgeons have been offering their patients cataract surgery that uses lasers in place of traditional tools. Laser cataract surgery is newer and more expensive, but is it better? Are Newer Surgical Techniques Always Better? Cataract surgery involves removing the clouded natural lens of the eye and replacing it with a clearer synthetic lens. It’s one of the most common and successful surgeries today, being performed three million times each year in the United States. Decades ago, cataract surgery wasn’t as common or successful. In the 1960s, surgeons made large incisions in the eye to remove the lens in one piece. Patients required general anesthesia, sutures, and more than a month of recovery time. After the 1960s, surgeons began using a needle vibrating at ultrasonic speeds to break the lens into extremely small pieces and remove it through a tiny incision. The incision was small enough to heal on its own without sutures, which decreased recovery times and rates of infection. Modern cataract surgery now enjoys a 98% or higher success rate.

If traditional cataract surgery has such an excellent track record, why are some surgeons switching to laser cataract surgery? In a word: LASIK. Since it was introduced to the United States in 1999, LASIK has proven that powerful pulses of light can do some things that metal instruments can’t. Lasers have

sculpted the natural lens of the eye accurately enough to improve nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism for millions of people. Can similar laser technology replace the ultrasonic needle of traditional cataract surgery? Some cataract surgeons think so, but new scientific studies are beginning to

tell a different story. Does Laser Cataract Surgery Cause Swelling in the Retina? In 2015 researchers in Australia studied laser cataract surgery patients by examining the amount of swelling in the center of the retina, the area responsible for the most detailed vision. They compared it to the swelling in patients who had traditional cataract surgery. The laser cataract surgery patients had significantly more retinal swelling. Verdict: Laser cataract surgery may adversely affect the retina. Does Laser Cataract Surgery Worsen Dry Eye? Since traditional cataract surgery can cause dry eye, researchers in China recently compared traditional cataract surgery patients to laser cataract surgery patients to see if there was a difference. Both groups of patients had drier eyes after surgery, but laser cataract surgery patients had it worse, especially patients who had dry eyes before the surgery. Verdict: Cataract surgery has a risk of dry eye, but laser cataract surgery has a higher risk.

hen it comes to cool hangouts in downtown Cape Coral, Nevermind Awesome Bar & Eatery set the local bar (pun intended) when it opened in 2012. Wellknown restaurateur Shannon Yates left Fort Myers to “cross the bridge” into his hometown to establish this narrow 44-seat space, serving craft beer in brown bags and cocktail creations new to South Cape. He soon took over the neighboring space, changing its vibe and offerings several times. Today it’s an Irish pub called The Hop. But Nevermind has stayed consistent. “I love the craft cocktail world, but the biggest battle is that bartenders tend to get lazy and don’t always want to make them,” says Yates candidly about the craft craze. “We run a small shifty program here.”

927 Tequila

That “small shifty program” includes the 927, a blend of jalapeno-infused tequila, ruby red grapefruit and Cointreau, in a glass with a half-salted rim. It’s warm, not too spicy, and has a nice balance of fruit and sweetness. The most popular cocktail at Nevermind is the East Parkway, a refreshing mix of cucumber, mint, Hendricks Gin, simple syrup and lime juice. Bartender Graylyn Lachance compares it to spa water, and I have to agree — only a grown-up version. The sangria is made to order, and while usually white, this spring the sauvignon blanc base has changed to rosé. The Pink Sangria features citrus vodka, elderflower liqueur and Cointreau. Fresh cucumber, orange, lemon and lime are muddled into the mixture before it is poured over ice. The result is a drink that’s a bit floral, with well-composed acidity and sweetness from the beginning to the end. As for bar bites, meat is large and in charge at Nevermind, fried pork shanks being among the most popular. Three thick, juicy pieces are fried to crisp perfection. Crunchy on the outside and moist in the middle, you’ll want to lick your fingers. Another signature bar item is the Volcano Spring Roll. Served hot, the crunchy roll filled with crab volcano mix and cream cheese is cut into bite-sized pieces and drizzled with teriyaki glaze and spicy mayo. A new Cape Coral ordinance allows craft cocktails and beers to be served downtown until 3 a.m. on weekends. Nevermind takes full advantage of the extended hours. The kitchen even stays open until 2:45. Cheers to the late-night crowd.

Klaus and Cortina Kermel take us on a tour of their riverside estate. GRANDEUR | SUMMER 2018 | 77

STORY BY ANDREA STETSON

PHOTOS SPECIAL TO GRANDEUR

Owner Klaus Kermel, an engineer from Germany, used all his expertise in construction to create a home for him and his wife, Cortina, that he says is as strong as a skyscraper. In fact, he used the same thick steel and concrete to build his fortress that is used in skyscrapers. All three levels of the house are concrete. “It is like a steel cage,” Klaus says. “It is all poured concrete. It will stand for 100 years. During the hurricane, all my neighbors were affected, and this house had nothing.” It is not only a fortress against wind, but water, too. “When Fort Myers is underwater, this is dry,” Klaus continues as he explains how the land is raised and on a slope. “All my 35 years of engineering went into this house. Us Germans build houses like fortresses. For Germans, when they build a house, it is for the kids and grandkids. We have houses that are hundreds of years old, and the same family owns it. It is the home of your family. I don’t want any catastrophe to hurt my house, so I will do anything I can to make it safe. It is in my genes.” Yet what people see isn’t a fortress, but a luxury castle with all the highest quality finishes and luxury aspects. The long driveway leads to a home that looks like a Southern plantation. “This was the estate of General Shaddelee,” Klaus explains. To design the house, Klaus researched what the original home looked like. “I paid a lot of money for a German detective to find out, and all they brought me was a little picture,” Klaus says. “A friend of mine made the oil painting from that little picture, and this is what our engineer design team made from that.” But it wasn’t that easy. “My wife wants a contemporary house, and I want an old Southern mansion house,” he says. The compromise was a Southern plantation look on the front outside and a modern home inside. That was the first of many compromises. Cortina likes the pool warmer than Klaus. The solution is a swimming pool that has two sections connected by a one inch overlap of water over a wall. Her side is warmer, and his is cooler. The 55,000-gallon pool was one of the most challenging parts of creating the house. The infinity edge pool looks like it flows right into the river. But Klaus didn’t was to see the drain that catches the overflow water. After months of design challenges, a hidden drain was designed.

The 55,000-gallon pool is divided into two sections to maintain different temperatures. They’re connected with a 1-inch overlap of water. An infinity edge provides a seamless view of the river; even the drain is concealed. In the front of the house, a long driveway leads to the Southern-style entrance. Several seating areas outside provide relaxing views of the river.

“This was complicated,” Klaus admits. “First all the pool engineers said it was impossible. I really like to build things and find solutions to problems.” The Shaddelee estate home begins in the spacious entryway that includes a sitting area under a 28-foot ceiling. Huge windows create a wall overlooking the pool and river, giving people great views from the moment they walk in the house. Just off the entry, solid wood custom-made 10-foot doors lead to a media/game/fitness room with a bar. French oak floors imported from Italy cover the floor of this large room. The other side of the entry leads to the family room, dining room and kitchen area. A formal dining room seats 10. The kitchen features two waterfall edge islands made of quartzite, which Klaus says is 10 times harder than granite. There are Wolf appliances, with the signature red knobs, a subzero refrigerator hidden behind white cabinets, and a butler’s pantry with a custom storage area in the pantry. The family room has plenty of seating with a huge L-shaped couch and additional matching chairs. Klaus, who builds five-star luxury hotels in Europe, created the upscale interior design with materials and furniture from all over the world. The main floor also includes two guest suites, one decorated in black and the other in white. A staircase leads to a second-floor suite that is secluded from the rest of the house. A king-size bed, couch and table fill the large suite. The room also 80 | SUMMER 2018 | grandeurmagazine.com

has a balcony overlooking the expansive landscaped driveway. Up the main stairs there is a guest suite with a balcony that overlooks the pool and river. There is a den, and on the other side of the second floor is the huge master suite. It begins with his and her bathrooms. Her bathroom has a walk-in closet that looks like a shop on Fifth Avenue in New York. “I love my closet,” Cortina says. “It took two months of planning for the lighting to be right for the closet,” Klaus says. His closet wasn’t much easier. It took six months to build due to shelving that is suspended without brackets and motion lighting. The bedroom has two queen beds. Klaus and his wife like different mattresses firmness. Two walls of sliding glass doors lead to the patio, which leads to a walkway to a gazebo with a fire pit. “We sit here and enjoy the sunset,” Klaus says. “We sit over the river and see dolphins. Sitting down in the patio area, it is a totally different feeling.” The couple enjoys sitting in the gazebo at the end of a long pier that juts out into the river. They also relax in a cozy sitting area under roof by the pool with hammocks and chairs. The house also features tile floors in the three-car garage and quartzite cabinets in the laundry room. There is an elevator that came in very handy when Klaus broke his toe. There are lots of unique, upscale touches such as the half bathroom that has a sink bowl

from Italy that looks like the inside of a gemstone. The property has 103 feet of seawall and a private dock and is directly on the Caloosahatchee River with access to the Gulf of Mexico. Thick high-quality insulation keeps the electric bills under $300, which Klaus says is great for a home this size. The five-bedroom, six full two half bathroom house spans 9,219 square feet under air and 11,936 total square feet. “I love it. I love all of it – the inside and outside,” Cortina says about her dream home. Klaus loves it, too. But when he bought the 0.93acre lot 10 years ago, his plan was to build a home that would be great when his son and daughter visit. Yet by the time the house was finished last year, those plans had changed. His children are grown and working. They rarely visit from Germany. “The house for us and our two little dogs is too much,” he admits. “My wife does not want to sell, but it is too crazy to keep it. It is only two persons, and we are only here four to six months each year. It would fit a family better that can enjoy it the whole time.” That is why he is selling his fully furnished dream home for $7.777 million. “That is the price, because 7 is the lucky number for my wife,” Klaus says. The home is being sold by Ted Stout, a broker with Realmark Realty Team. “We will miss it. It will be terrible,” Klaus says. “But it doesn’t make sense to have a house like this when we are not here enough.”
