April 2015
From the Grand Chef… The 2015 Spring Cheminot is behind us and we held our annual Merci Boxcar pilgrimage at Camp Mabry so all who attended got to see the boxcar as it has been sitting for the thousands of visitors to the museum; far than it has had over the many years at its previous location so we should be proud to have accomplished the move and thankful to the Texas Military Forces Museum for housing our Merci Boxcar inside the Great Hall. I received this note from Jeff Hunt about the Merci Boxcar exhibit just before our annual event: Please convey our appreciation to everyone in attendance for the support your organization has given the museum, how delighted we are to have the boxcar in the exhibit and how popular it has proven to be with our visitors (39,006 in 2014). Jeffrey Wm Hunt, Director Texas Military Forces Museum That is quite an impressive number of visitors and Camp Mabry just held their annual open house in conjunction with the American Heroes Air Show on April 18th and April 19th. Voiture 175 set up a table there and met many who stopped into the museum for the event. The Merci Boxcar is a favorite and the new lighting was finished before the open house so the box car looks great!
We are very close to 100% for this year. We in fact lost the Membership Award at the Central States Promenade to Colorado by .32% and two more renewals in Texas would have put us in First Place. If I had realized we were so close I would have gotten the word out so we could have not missed out on that award. I hope that our accomplishment for this year will be 100% within Grand and I thank all those who worked so hard and went over 100% on their membership. Much of their success is due to their programs. Each locale should work to have at least two active programs. Americanism is easy as most any event we are involved in falls under the Americanism Program. The Flags for 1st Graders Program is a key part of Americanism and gives the Voiture Locale good visibility within the community. Child Welfare, Youth Sports, and of course Nurses Training are all good programs that can be worked and remember to report what you have done. Other programs that seem difficult may not be as hard as you think. There is a good article on the VAVS program within the newsletter that I hope everyone reads and realizes how important the VAVS program is and how much impact our programs have on others. We are #16 nationwide and have several locales at 100% or over goal. I know our Grand Chef would be very happy to make goal this year and I think he deserves our support for all of his hard work. We also need new members to help carry on for our future. Every new member helps toward our future. I want to express my sincere Thanks to those locales that made goal. Keep up the good work!

VA VOLUNTARY SERVICE I was asked to write an article for the TVN to inform my fellow Voyageurs about Forty & Eight VA Volunteer Service (VAVS). This is a very important service we provide to our veterans in need and their respective families. The VAVS was founded in 1946 to provide for our nation's Veterans while they are cared for by VA health care facilities. VAVS workers assist VA medical facilities by augmenting staff with end of life care programs, foster care, community-based volunteer programs, hospital wards, nursing homes, and Veteran outreach centers. Volunteers contributed a more than 11.3 million hours of service to Veterans in FY2013. VAVS volunteers are a priceless asset to America's Veterans and to VA. As part of this program, Voyageurs (called Representatives or Deputy Representatives) represent the Forty and Eight by regularly attending the VAVS Committee meetings at their Local Veteran Administration Medical Centers (VAMC’s). They as well as other Voyageur Volunteers visit the VAMC’s on a regular basis, where they give comfort and assistance to, or just visit with, the hospitalized veterans. VAVS Volunteers are a priceless asset to the Nation’s Veterans and to the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Forty & Eight has adopted an additional program for these veterans, called "Keep Those Wheelchairs Rolling." Under this program, the VAVS Representative (or Deputy Representative) writes a brief letter outlining a "need" of the patients. These "needs" may cover a project, equipment or comfort and convenience items needed by the hospitalized veterans. The entries are then judged on the need and benefit to the patients, and those selected receive the item(s) requested, courtesy of the National Box Car Association.

VA VOLUNTARY SERVICE (CONTINUED) I have worked as a Deputy Representative at the San Diego VA Healthcare System and continued my work as Sous Directeur VAVS for Grand du Texas representing at the Audie L. Murphy VA Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. Volunteers are far too few and I hope to help train other Voyageurs Militaire to help when they can in their local areas. This is a service I am passionate about and believe we should do much more to help our veterans in need. How can the Grand du Texas support VAVS? It begins with something as simple as donating your time. Even a few hours a month adds up counting as volunteer hours for your activity reports. VAVS volunteer hours all count in Americanism, Voiture Activities and VAVS reporting. But more importantly it is time well spent as it is all about serving our veterans in need. So what is the Grand du Texas doing for VAVS? The answer is simple – Not Enough! There are far more volunteer opportunities with VAVS than volunteers. There is no shortage of tasks that need to be accomplished, whether clerical, filing, running Inpatient errands to the Canteen Store, working in the Wheelchair repair Shop, being an Escort, a Greeter/Ambassador, Conscious Sedation Drivers, Visiting Inpatients and distributing books, magazines, puzzles, or maybe hosting a Bingo Game. Our Grand Directeur VAVS is Darrell Gibbs who has dedicated many years to the VAVS and La Societe. Directeur Gibbs wanted to also point out that volunteers not only get personal satisfaction from helping our veterans in need, but are recognized every April for their volunteer services by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. Volunteers who accumulate 100 hours or more are recognized during an annual dinner and recognition ceremony. Volunteers are recognized when they achieve milestones of donating 100, 300, 500 and 1,000 hours. Volunteering at a VA medical facility is a great way to serve your fellow veterans and be rewarded with smiles and thanks from these comrades who truly appreciate the time given.
Two locales stand out within the Grand du Texas. Voiture 1031 in Killeen has an active group of volunteers who support VAVS at the VA Hospital in Temple and Voiture 542 in San Antonio where we regularly work to support our veterans in need. Other locales may be donating many hours, but our reporting is not being done to reflect our work or they are working under the reporting of another Veteran’s Organization. It is essential that we report our time each year. I volunteer between four and eight hours a month, between the Audie Murphy VA Medical Center, the Frank Tejeda Outpatient Clinic and our VA Fisher House. My task, as simple as it is vital, makes a difference and is appreciated. Our Veterans are a national treasure and we cannot appreciate them enough, but we can start by giving a little of our time. When all the “little’s” are added up, in can mean a whole lot. Please feel free to contact me with questions on how to set up a VAVS program within your locale or on how to document the work you are doing. You may also get more information from the Voiture Nationale VAVS program website where information has also been provided by Ron Rolfes, Natinoal VAVS Representative. Go to:

DIVISION II I recently spoke with the members of American Legion, got two renewals and two prospects. I know it’s hard to keep people around but all we can do is try. Let’s make this year a NEW YEAR and all who belong should try and recruit at least one more person to fill not only their shoes but the shoes of us who have left this EARTH to be in post ever-lasting. PEACE to all good men and women. George Murphy Grand Sous Chef de Train Division II

I need a volunteer to keep up with the Grand Voiture du Texas Face Book page. It is set up, but I am not really a FB person and need help! If you are into FB then you can help promote events and once it becomes more known it will get easier, but we need a person who is a regular on FB and can manage the page on a regular basis. Contact me before our Grand Promenade if you are interested in working with our FB page. David Knutson Grand Publiciste
