La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux Grand Voiture du Texas OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE GRAND du TEXAS Winner of the Arthur McDowell Award 1991 – 1992 – 1993 – 1994 – 1995 – 1996 for the Best Grand Voiture Publication in the Nation without Advertising
November 2015
From the Grand Chef de Gare…. I want to Thank all from Voiture 542 who worked to help make the Fall Cheminot a success. It was a lot of hard work and all the feedback I have gotten has been very positive. We also had great support from many other locales from throughout the Grand du Texas and we had a great turn out at the banquet on Saturday night. We were right near downtown San Antonio and I know many took advantage and did some sight-seeing on the San Antonio River Walk or other attractions our great city has to offer. Congratulations to all the award winners from throughout the Grand du Texas and to the Special Award Winners recognized: Voyageur of the Year Ron Holmes (V-605/El Paso) and Law Officer of the Year Sgt. Adam Johnson from the Austin Police Department, Austin, Texas (V175/Austin). Sgt. Johnson was also the National Law Officer of the Year and was presented his award from Voiture Nationale in Green Bay, WI at Promenade Nationale. We addressed some important issues at the Fall Cheminot and reversed an earlier vote at the 2015 Grand Promenade last June that eliminated the Fall Cheminot by combining the Fall and Spring Cheminot events into one event. The rationale for this reversal was that it created a long vacuum period between the Grand Promenade until the Spring Cheminot where Locales did not have the opportunity to interact with Grand
functions. Other important decisions were made that are recorded in the minutes. The Grand Voiture du Texas was recognized for reaching 100% membership for this past year. Thank you to all the locales who worked very hard on their membership to make that possible. We are behind for this year just now reaching 50% and the new rule is in effect this year making membership delinquent if dues are not paid by December 31, 2015. Please send in your renewals and continue the good work on programs. We recognized several locales for their work and would like to recognize others as well. Sometimes all it takes is reporting your activities – without that we have no idea what you have done. Each locale should have one program they work for their community such as Americanism, Nurses Training, Child Welfare or Youth Sports. Many of these programs are covered by your regular activities. More information on what should be reported is also included later in the TVN.

GRAND DIRECTEUR BOX CAR: Fellow Voyageurs, Texas has done great so for with the National Box Car Association. 100 Pins have been sold, 200 Crew Cards are sold or on consignment and 200 Associate Cards has been paid for by Cabane 1031 and Grande Cabane. Still have 100 Crew and Associate cards left. Need to get these out and paid for and get all our monies to the Box Car Association. Box Car coins are here. You can order any year you want or the whole set. The coins are $10.00 each and if you want all 5 coins it’s $50.00. Coins have to be paid for in advance as they will not let us have them on consignment. I did have two complete sets and 8 of this year’s coins at the Fall Cheminot and they went fast. I have ordered more of this year’s coins, so if you want any I will have them at Box Car, but make sure that you let me know so that I will have enough of what you want. Texas has done great every year for Box Car and always wins awards at Nationale. Let’s not slow down as the Box Car Association does a lot for La Societe. If you would like to know more details, go to the Nationale web site and look under programs, or you may call me and I will give you the whole story.
A BIG THANKS to those that support Box Car each year. Ronnie L. A new Box Car Pin series has been recently added and has been named the “Shadow Train”. It began with the nd 2014 issue Pin and the 2015 Pin is the 2 issue of this series and is designed to shadow the Coin Face image by one year beginning with the 2013 Coin and will work as follows; Beginning with the 2014 Box Car Pin, it reflects the coin face for the 2013 issue coin (a Box Car). The 2015 Box Car Pin depicts the 2014 issue Coin face (Box Car). The 2016 Box Car Pin will mirror the 2015 issue coin face (Locomotive). The 2017 Box Car Pin will reflect the 2016 coin face (Caboose). To round out the Shadow Train, the 2018 Box Car Pin will depict the very first issue, the 2012 coin face (the first Box Car). When all is completed, the Box Car Pin series, “Shadow Train”, will show a Locomotive pulling three Box Cars and trailing a Caboose.
Pins are $3 each / 2017 & 2018 pins have not yet been issued.

La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux Grand Voiture du Texas
My Fellow Voyageurs As we approach Veterans Day there will be many articles printed about veterans, sacrifice, honor, courage and commitment. I just read an article published by the VA about the number of veterans in America and it was broken down by age groups. I would like to list these numbers below for your thoughts; Veterans Ages 20 - 29 30 - 99 40 - 49 50 - 59 60 - 69 70 - 79 80 +
Amount in that age in America Presently 1,012,000 2,156,000 2,814,000 3,776,000 5,101,000 3,863,000 2,950,000
Of course these total are rounded off and not exact but I believe there is a disturbing fact here. So many of our members state that "We cannot attract the younger members, because we don't have anything of interest to them or they are busy raising families and working to buy homes." If you will look at the largest group by age of veterans listed above that group is from 50 years old trough 80 years old. That is exactly the group that is the majority of our membership now, so what does this show us. It shows that no matter what new ideas for membership we come up with or how many excuses we have for not getting new members, it still comes down to the hard fact that not enough of our current members are doing anything to recruit new members. Many of the members we have that talk the most about getting new members have done absolutely nothing themselves to recruit veterans. How many members do we have that can say they have been awarded at least one "I Got 2" membership pin in any given year. For that matter how many current members have even ask a veteran about joining, whether they did or not. This article that supported these numbers by age of veterans by the VA really jumped out and got my attention as it should yours. I guess this proves that there needs to be some new excuses invented now for our lack of new members, because people will lie, but numbers never do. Our current membership reminds me of the neighbors that live on each side of you. If you house caught fire, one neighbor would grab a hose and start helping you put the fire out before the Fire Department arrived and the other neighbor would stand in his front yard with his hands in his pockets to see how long it would take for your house to burn down. I hate to admit it but I believe we have more members with their hands in their pockets waiting for La Societe to dissolve than we do seizing the situation and trying to do something to stop that before it happens. It's not rocket science and anyone that has worked on a membership committee has always tried to find an answer to the problem, when the answer has always been right in front of us and that is supported by these numbers above. For all the Voyageurs that are doing what they can to recruit new members you have the gratitude of La Societe and all members and for the others, "JUST ASK" a qualified veteran to become a member of The Honor Society of American Veterans. HAPPY VETERANS DAY to all of you. In Service to La Societe Mike Wood

PRESS RELEASE Voiture Locale 605, Forty and Eight A Charitable Honor Society of Veterans
Special Honorable Destruction of 30’ X 60’ Flags El Paso, TX – Nov. 12, 2015 – Voiture Locale 605 of The Forty and Eight will be conducting a special CEREMONY FOR THE DISPOSAL AND RETIREMENT OF UNSERVICEABLE FLAGS at 10am, Wednesday, November 18th. V-605 was aware of a flag destruction dilemma for Sunland Park Dodge who have three of the largest commercially made flags at 30 X 60 feet. The extremely large flags, faded and worn are in need of proper and honorable destruction. Trevor Wolfe, Military Liaison for Sunland Park Dodge will be presenting the flags for disposal. Sunland Park Dodge will also be presenting a scholarship donation to V-605. This Nurses Training Scholarship Fund is used to assist nursing students in need of financial aid to stay in school and meet their tuition and other needs. In many cases those scholarships are the critical difference that allows recipients to pursue their studies and go on to receive a nursing degree. The scholarships not only represent monetary support but also our emotional support and best wishes for success in their noble endeavor to serve us as nurses. The ceremony will be held at American Legion Post 58, 4724 Vulcan, (Northeast) El Paso. Detailed or additional information may be received by calling 346-6099. Those who have other flags in need of disposal may also bring them. The public, media, and all veterans are encouraged to attend and assist. (Prepared by Renslar “Renny” Keagle, Correspondant V-605, renslarkeagle@gmail.com or 346-6099)
