Chef de Chemin de Fer Attends Annual Pancake Breakfast
Greetings, Just a short note to let you all know what has transpired since our last bulletin. Annemarie, David, Ronnie and I met with Milton Sherwood in Rockport, Texas to present Aransas County ISD with the Chrome book computers and a check for $525 to get them all licensed. The weather was great and the trip turned out nice. After our arrival Annemarie and I took a short tour around town and noticed all the destruction that was still present there. It is going to take some time for all to get back to normal. I’m asking for a few more prayers for them and hope everything will get done soon. Keep your prayers going for those there and elsewhere that were involved with Hurricane Harvey. The media did finally show up and David, who deserves more than a thank you, was outstanding with the interview. The staff and students at the school were also outstanding and were very appreciative to everyone responsible for the assistance.
Voiture 542 in San Antonio held their 69th Annual Pearl Harbor Breakfast on December 2, 2017. An invitation was sent to Chef de Chemin de Fer Kenneth Lafleur and he was delighted to accept the invitation. The event was well attended with other VIPs such as San Antonio City Council Member Clayton Perry. Grand Chef de Gare Murphy attended to help escort Chef de Chemin de Fer Lafleur and his wife Patricia to the Pancake Breakfast. They also were given royal treatment from V-542 Locale Chef de Gare Sean Habina. Please read the great comments Chef de Chemin de Fer Lafleur said about the folks in San Antonio and the Grand du Texas in the Voyager Briefs dated December 2017. He says it much better than I can. Thanks to all who made the Pancake Breakfast happen and congratulations to the five Nurses Training scholarship recipients! A few photos are posted later in this edition of the TVN.
Annemarie and I would like to thank all who were able to donate anything; time, money and prayers for this to happen. May God bless you all and the Forty and Eight! Grand Chef de Gare George Murphy

TEXAS sits at #41 which is a pretty shameful spot. Everyone should be at 90% or better which would account for some Voyageurs passing.
Let’s talk membership. There are three major components to membership. They are: 1. 2. 3.
Invite veterans to become members of the 40 & 8 Involve new inductees in the organization Retain voyageurs in the 40 & 8
The two questions that I am asked most by Voyageurs is how do we recruiter new members and where do I find veterans to invite to become members of La Societe des Quarante et Huit Hommes? My answer is always the same… first, you must have a Voyageur who is interested in being the “Recruiter” for your Voiture Locale. Then the recruiter needs to develop a “Prospective Member List.” That list should include the names of prospective members AND a list of the places of where to find new prospective members. The third thing that the Recruiter must do is to obtain the brochure “What is the Forty and Eight” from emblem sales at Voiture Nationale. Now that you have the “What is the Forty and Eight” brochure, your list of where to find prospective members and names of prospective members all you now have to do “JUST ASK” My opening question is Hi, my name is Joe. Have you ever heard of The Society of Forty Men and Eight horses? The answer I receive the most is “No. What is it? The conversation takes off from there. Are you always going to be successful...NO! The key to success is to keep asking the question. Should you have any questions about this article or comments please feel free to pick your phone and call me. For god and country and comrades
Congratulations to those at 100% and the few who are over 100%! Keep up the great work!

From the Grand Chef de Train First of all I would like to congratulate the following Locales for achieving 100% of goal or higher – Voiture Locales 163, 175, 266, 312 and 605. Others are close, some not so close, as of this writing, we stand at around 80% of goal, about 58 short of 100% for Grand du Texas.
Lastly, let us not forget about new members. Consider a membership fundraiser to pay for new member dues, chapeaus, manuals, etc. Have you a few “What is the Forty and Eight” brochures on hand to give out? Anyone who recruits two new members within a single membership year will receive an “I got 2 Onboard! Did you get your pin from Nationale? Let’s all make use of these remaining few months, weeks and days – as our Grand Promenade approaches – it would be great for your Locale and Grande du Texas to be at 100% or better.
I think it is important to remember that the 2018 membership year ends July 31st, 2018. That gives us about 4 months, 16 weeks, 122 days to do our best to make goal for Grand du Texas – but more importantly each Locale. It goes without saying that Grand du Texas will not make goal unless we push renewals and new membership at the Locale level. I do not believe in lost causes. Many Locales have members who no longer attend promenades, have not renewed for a year or two and we seem to have just lost contact with them. The thing to remember is that they obviously joined for a reason – now what is the reason we “lost” them – maybe we ought to contact them and ask. I have started sending boxcar postcard renewal reminders to those that Nationale has indicated have not yet paid dues for 2018. If you are reading this, got a reminder and have paid – enjoy the postcard and we thank you. If you got a notice and haven’t paid – goal is not an arbitrary number someone has just thrown out there – making goal is important – La Societe must grow or we will fade away. Please consider sending in your dues soon – or at least contact your Locale Correspondant or Chef de Gare on your status.

Texas Voie de la Liberte (Liberty Road Marker) Is Getting a New Home The replica Liberty Road Marker which came on the Texas Merci Boxcar in 1949 has been moved to the Museum of the American GI in College Station, Texas. Our marker has been waiting patiently for a new home since the Merci Boxcar moved in 2014 and there was no suitable spot for it at the Texas Military Forces Museum. With the move comes a reunion of sorts and a facelift! The Texas Voie de la Liberte is a replica of the Liberty Road Marker near Sainte Menehould, France and is made out of concrete. Many of the markers in Europe were painted to accent the liberty torch and water below so ours will get a new paint job at the Museum of the American GI before it is put on display adjacent the entrance of the museum. But wait! It will not be alone. Brent Mullens, Director of the Museum of the American GI, helped their museum acquire an actual Liberty Road Marker from Belgium a few years ago.
The
Belgium marker will be placed opposite the Texas marker to make for a grand entrance to the museum. Grand du Texas will have an information plaque adjacent the Texas marker to explain where it came from and reference both the Texas Merci Boxcar and the Forty & Eight organization. A grand opening of the marker placement is planned for the Fall of 2018. For more information about the museum go to their website at: http://americangimuseum.org

YOUTH SPORTS Voyageurs of Le Grande Du Texas,
Voiture 266 Continues to Help Those in Need
First off I feel compelled to apologize for my lack of attention toward our Youth Sport’s Program. For those of you that have more than one hat and participate/volunteer in other organizations I hope you will understand. I am currently the State Commander for another organization and have been on the road throughout our Great State as well as nationally. My wife has been in and out of the hospital for the past 6 months and I work full time shift work. All excuses aside I endeavor to do better. Passe Grande du Texas Chef David Knutson has utilized the program to assist schools affected by Hurricane Harvey last fall to get them much needed Sports Equipment. If you have reports please start preparing them and get them submitted in a timely manner. Now is also the time to start getting in the communities and making contacts for spring and summer sports venues. Let me know how I can help. Thank you for your assistance and feel free to contact me at any time.
Voiture 266 donates cleaning products and paper goods to Cove House and the Copperas Cove Soup Kitchen. Both organizations help homeless veterans, children and battered spouses. Three times a year each organization provides the Locale a list of items needed.

We were brought into one of the classes where the students use the Lenovo Chromebooks to help them study. When asked if they prefer the Chromebooks over Textbooks the Chromebooks easily won their favor. With technology at the heart of their education and life we are very glad to help fill the shortage caused by the hurricane and make sure these items were readily available to help them in their studies.

And promise to learn all the duties as outlined in all Constitution and manuals of my Grand, and La Societe.

VOITURE 605 CONTINUES TO LEAD WITH THEIR FLAGS FOR 1STGRADERS PROGRAM!
Bliss Elementary—February 8th, 2018 V-605’s Americanism program of Flags for First Graders continued into 2018 with our second school following Gen. Colin Powell in January. This was the second FFFG’s visit to Bliss Elementary, a military school on Fort Bliss here in El Paso, TX. When asked how many students had a parent in the military, 100% raised their hands. The program was conducted by VM Dale Thompson with assistance by VM Mary Anderson, Renny Keagle and Roger Folmar. Included in the program was the “13 Folds of the Flag”. The program concluded with each student receiving their own flag on a pedestal and other flag related material.

V-605 of La Societe, 40&8, gave an elementary school soon to be torn down and in its last year - a FFFG’s program. Burnet Elementary (photo below) will soon close and its students directed to other schools. There were only 39 first graders and we could have skipped this school but felt it important that these 39 students get the same opportunity as we did on Mar. 20th when we presented to 137 first graders at Milam Elementary School. The Burnet Bear students were very attentive and we had a lot of fun seeing if they could figure out what star belonged to Texas. Each student still received their own flag and other flag related material. The school was presented flag material for the office and library and a 40 & 8 Americanism pin for the principal, Ms. Williams, a 30 year military spouse.
