gatherings

Dear Members, I hope you all had a wonderful start to the New Year. I am deeply saddened to inform you that we’ve lost a member of the Salamander family, Mr. Larry Packard. Larry, designer of Innisbrook’s four golf courses and a cornerstone of the Innisbrook community, was 101 years old. Please keep the Packard family in your thoughts. February is full of events and activities at Reunion. From rooting for your favorite team during the Super Bowl or Sochi Winter Olympics to a romantic dinner for Valentine’s Day, there is no shortage of excitement at Reunion. It’s also time to gear up for the Valspar Championship taking place at Innisbrook Resort March 10-16 on Larry’s most famous course, the Copperhead. Be sure to inquire with membership about how you can get your tickets and accommodations. For more information about upcoming events at Reunion, please contact your membership office. Our public relations team has also been hard at work getting the coverage for Reunion and our sister properties. We are excited to share these great stories about our properties: Orlando's Reunion Resort is the perfect tonic for those worn to a frazzle at the PGA Merchandise Show, WorldGolf.com Bring Back Golf!, Successful Meetings Top 10 Destinations For Your Next 2014 Corporate Event, Longega Events (blog) Top 100 Golf Courses, State by state, American Golf Monthly

Yours in hospitality,

In the end, it was the team of Isabel Robertson, David White and Phyllis and Rich Sawyer who ran away in first place with a score of net 50. The team of Lisa Coons, Teresa Yip and David Fitzgibbons were runners up with a net 53. BOOK A PUTTING LESSON at THE PAD To book a putting lesson at the PAD, call 407.396.4004. Individual and Group lessons are available.

Putting Tip Control Your Distance Before you putt, stand behind the ball and look at the hole, then take a practice stroke to feel the putt. This helps your body prepare for the actual stroke you are going to make and helps your distance control. For Q&A’s please visit www.franklygolf.com/golfequipmentqaarchive.aspx or stop by the Putting PAD on your next visit to Reunion Resort!

Join the Frankly Golf Putting Club We are excited to announce the new Frankly Putting Club at the Putting PAD, exclusively

INSIDE THE LINES: TENNIS TIP

One question that I get asked often is “When should I use the serve and volley?” The answer is pretty simple - when it is effective. Don’t try to force this style, but when you can throw it in the mix, you will usually find that it will have benefits, even if you lose the point. Now your opponent will be more worried about what you are going to do rather than what shot to hit.

If you aren’t sure what a serve and volley style of play is, then let me explain. It is a very aggressive style of play that adds a lot of pressure against your opponent. When a server hits the serve they will follow it in, almost like being pulled by a string that is attached to the ball itself. From there they will split step right before the ball is struck by the opponent; now they are neutral and ready for whatever their opponent throws at them.

The next area to be cautious with is to not do too much with the volley. When hitting the volley, what you need to realize is that you just surprised them with your movement forward, so any volley coming over the net and deep will be very effective.

There are a couple of things to consider when trying this style of play. First, make sure you hit your serve first. Many players will be so focused on getting to the net that they will actually run right through their serve. This equals a missed first serve and a failed attempt at the serve and volley.

Give this style a try during your next fun match or practice and see if you can’t work it into your game.

gath erings | 9

What can we say about the serve and volley, or should I ask first if you even know what that is? The serve and volley style of play seems to be a forgotten part of the tennis game. When watching most players at the club level and also on TV, you will see the baseline rally followed by a winner or an error.
