ahrija, a village on the outskirts of Rabat, is a great spot for those who love the countryside and its scenery. In Bahrija one finds a chapel dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, the local patron. Currently being restored to its former glory. St.Martin of Tours was a young Roman soldier stationed in Amiens, France. During his travel he came across a poorly dressed beggar and felt pity for him. He cut his own military cloak in half and shared it with the poor man in the street. During the night, Martin dreamt of Christ wearing the half cloak and saying: “Here is Martin, the Roman soldier who is not baptized; he has clad me.” (Sulpicius, ch 2). Martin then decided to get baptised and converted to Christianity. St Martin’s feast in Bahrija is celebrated on the Sunday closest to November 11. The feast has several traditions. Since the feast occurs at a time when seasonal fruit and nuts are abundant there are many traditional sweets related to it. These include the “Torta ta’ San Martin” (St Martin’s Tart) and “Il-Borża ta’ San Martin” (St Martin’s Bag) which include a mixture of figs, walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, dried figs and oranges. As a tradition parents tell their children the story of this saint and give them ‘Borża ta’ San Martin’, a small bag full of nuts and fruit symbolising Saint Martin, the giver. In fact, there is also a popular rhyme linked to this tradition that goes by: “Ġewż, lewż, qastan, tin – kemm inhobbu lil San Martin” (literally translated to “Walnuts, almonds, chestnuts, figs – oh how I Love St Martin”). On Saturday evening a small procession with the statue of Saint Martin and a band playing along takes place around the village. This is followed by a small ground fireworks display in the village square. On Sunday morning, the feast day, the village of Bahrija is renowned for its annual ‘turkey fair’, in Maltese referred to as ‘Il-Fiera tadDundjani’. If you happen to be going by car to the Bahrija feast, be sure to arrive early as all the streets get packed with cars. This fair is popular for its agricultural and animal products. One can find plants, fresh vegetables, local honey, other local produce and an exhibition of local animals. If you’re planning to visit Malta in November, what better way to complement your holiday than a country walk and a visit to the Bahrija feast.

he Lascaris War Rooms were the Operational Headquarters which were built in order to provide a secure place from where war operations could be conducted. The war rooms are located deep in the rock under St. Peter and St. Paul Bastion which forms part of the defences of Valletta built by the Knights of St. John in 1566.

Fort Rinella in Kalkara was built in 1878. This fort is not only a unique remnant of Malta’s recent British colonial past,

but it is also the world’s first mechanical fort which enabled its small garrison to fire a monstrous 100-ton gun every six minutes. On visiting this fort in 1889, the great French writer Jules Verne described it as a marvel of the industrial age which would render Malta safe forever.

The Malta at War Museum housed in an old 18th century military barracks built in the historic walls of Vittoriosa, (Birgu), is Malta’s best presented testimonial of the great ordeal suffered by the Island during the Second World War. The site focuses on the daily life of wartime Malta telling the story of how this tiny island managed to withstand one of the fiercest onslaughts in modern history. It offers a unique experience to the visitor through a combination of original filmfootage, expert guiding and original artifacts and memorabilia, all of which are nicely presented in a new modern setting.

The Saluting Battery in Valletta offers breath-taking views of the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities. This battery
