FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Useful Tips

to Protect Your Home Kenneth Olson, CMCA, AMS General Manager

Home sweet home – it’s a safe and welcoming haven for you and your family. But unfortunately, not everyone sees it that way. Your home and your belongings can also be appealing targets to criminals, but there are steps you can take to signicantly reduce the risk. Below are valuable tips to help safeguard your home.

Tips

1. Lock Your Doors. This may seem like a nobrainer, but sometimes residents of gated communities leave their exterior doors unlocked because the controlled access supplied by the gates makes them feel safe. But better safe than sorry — unfortunately, those with criminal intent will find their way inside. 2. Add Even More Barriers to Entry. You can easily make it more difficult for unauthorized visitors to enter your home. For example, if your home has sliding doors that lead outside, placing a block of wood or a pipe in the tracking will prevent it from opening. 3. Install Protection Devices. If you have a home security system, use it. If you don't — and you can't or don't want to install one — placing a warning sign in your yard or a sign on your door can be very effective. 4. Make A Presence — or Create One. If you're home when a stranger

knocks, don't open the door but make sure they know you're there. Ask who it is, and if they or their intentions are unfamiliar, tell them you're not interested. If they won't leave, tell them you will call the police — and do it if they continue to lurk. When you're not going to be home, make sure the lights are on and the television or music is playing to make it seem like the house is occupied. 5. Befriend Your Neighbors. If you'll be away for any length of time, arrange for a neighbor to retrieve your newspaper, pick up your mail and retrieve any packages delivered to the home so it

appears that someone is always home. If you are planning to be gone longer than two weeks, fill out a vacation watch form in the Membership office so that our Community Homeowners Association Patrol (C.H.A.P.S.) will periodically check your home exterior while you are gone. 6. Retain Clear Lines of Vision. Having clear sight lines and visibility from your home's windows and doors are important to seeing what's going on around you. Be sure to regularly trim your lawn and shrubs — or arrange for a landscaper to do it — to prevent overgrown foliage from blocking your view.

COFFEE CONVERSATION WITH KEN

The Conversation with Ken session provides a good opportunity for homeowners to bring questions to the General Manager and engage in discussion in a casual format. Conversation with Ken is on April 17 at 8 a.m. in the Palm Center. 8

Grand Lifestyles | April 2019 | suncitygrand.com

7. Make Sure Lights Around Your Home are Operational and Turned On at Night. This will present a well-lit environment and allow unwanted guests to be visible. 8. Don't Leave Your Garage Door Open. Leaving your garage door open when you're not actually in the garage is an invitation for burglars. Your garage door should only be open when you need to enter or exit with your vehicle. If you want to work in the garage, you can keep the door open for air and light, but always be aware of your surroundings — and if you walk away, close it. 9. Hide Your Valuables. Jewelry and other valuables can be irresistible targets for criminals, so secure them out of sight in a safe container, like a storage bin, safe, jewelry box, fake book or other clever hiding place. And if you keep your jewelry box in plain sight for convenience, place it somewhere less visible — otherwise, you make it easy for a criminal to snatch your prized possessions in seconds.

10. Record Ids and Other Identifying Information. Permanently record all of your electronics' serial numbers — if they don't have any, engrave or permanently write your own information. For additional security, photograph yourself with your belongings to make it easier to recover stolen items, especially if they're sold at pawnshops.

11. Utilize The City Of Surprise Risk Assessment Program (No Cost). The program includes an on-site visit and survey of your property by a walk through that identifies specific target areas to address. Also, time is spent discussing personal safety devices and security devices appropriate for your property. To obtain more information or to schedule an officer for this free service, call the Surprise Police Department’s Community Relations Unit at 623-222-4422.

These tips can help keep criminals away from your home and property, but always remember make safety your top priority. If you do experience a home invasion, don't try to play hero — nothing you own is more important than your well-being or even your life. Immediately contact the police if a criminal act occurs, or even if you see suspicious activity near your home or in your community. The Surprise Police Department would much rather deal with a false alarm than a criminal act with the potential to cause harm.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS

THE SCIENCE OF GOLF COURSE GRASS Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations

This issue I want to focus on the difficult task that the Superintendents; David Bergstrom and Jeff Pritchard have every day to have a beautiful manicured golf course(s) to play on. Growing grass isn’t just their job, it is a science. Every day, every tee box, every fairway and every green could face them with a challenge and it is changing daily. A golf course superintendent is a person who professionally manages water, labor, time, materials and financial resources needed to care for the turfgrass and landscaped grounds on a golf course. Golf course superintendents have also been referred to as greenskeepers and turf managers. Golf course superintendents are concerned with the environmental health of the golf course, the sporting needs of the players and the financial sustainability of the golf club for which they work. Their management strategies must also align with Sun City Grands business’ environmental and philanthropic role in the community. Golf course superintendents carefully monitor the natural weather patterns, environment and other influences that affect the playing areas and landscapes with which golfers interact. Golf course superintendents monitor the health of the golf course environment

through careful study, diagnosis and treatment of disease and injury to the golf course’s turfgrass fairways, tees and greens areas, as well as bunkers, areas of penalty, naturalized areas and trees. Their skilled management of the course is accomplished through a detailed knowledge of biology, chemistry, plant pathology and entomology.

would receive. With this information they are able to tailor their cultural practices to maintain/improve the subsurface to produce great quality turf.

Growing grass is simply not just throwing down seed, watering and fertilizing it. There is a lot more that goes into it. The superintendents have to know what is going on below the surface to make sure that the playing conditions are great. One way this is accomplished is through very detailed and costly soil testing. Soil samples are taken on the golf courses on a regular basis to help them manage the turf but every few years a very detailed soil test is performed. It consists of taking samples of 3 different tiers; 1st tier 0-4 inches, 2nd tier 4-8 inches and the 3rd tier 8-12 inches. Above is a sample of a report that they

David Bergstrom and Jeff Pritchard are highly educated and skilled superintendents and they are both working really hard for every resident to have 4 beautiful golf courses. I want to thank them for their hard work and dedication. 10

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER

HYDRATION

R EQ UIR EM ENTS F OR ACTI VE SENI ORS

also act as diuretics, increasing water loss. When you add other common, mildly diuretic fluids like caffeine and alcohol, hydration becomes even more critical.

Allison Adams Fitness Manager

As Arizona temperatures increase, we who are active 50+ exercisers need to pay special attention to our hydration and to our electrolytes. When older adults exercise, especially in hot, dry climates, their sensation of thirst diminishes. And we know that “normal” thirst kicks in only after you are already dehydrated. And waiting for thirst may lead to heatrelated illnesses.

A quick and easy way to assess hydration is by monitoring urine volume and color. Dark-colored urine usually means you are dehydrated (although some dietary supplements like vitamins with a high concentration of riboflavin can cause a brightcolored urine as well). So does infrequent urination. However, be cognizant that prescription drugs can affect urine color and volume too.

ability of the kidneys to conserve water and sodium.

PROPER HYDRATION BECOMES EVEN MORE IMPORTANT AS WE AGE

Aging also causes other alterations in normal physiology that increase the risk of dehydration. Sweat rate changes, our kidney function affects fluid transport, and vacillations occur in electrolyte levels and blood flow responses. We must be vigilant about our hydration needs and create and use strategies to keep sufficiently hydrated during the physiological stress of exercise.

your body’s function and performance, sodium is by far the most important electrolyte, because a decrease in your body’s sodium concentration can have some extremely negative consequences. There can be anywhere from 400 mg to 1200 mg of sodium in each liter of sweat. Since sweat has both fluid and electrolytes in it, drinking water alone (especially distilled water) can be really dangerous. This is the fastest way to decrease or dilute your body’s concentration of sodium. If you’re exercising and you find yourself urinating a lot and feeling ill, you may be hyponatremic and need to re-hydrate with something with more sodium in it. Most sports drinks contain water, electrolytes and some form of sugar to provide a small source of energy to help maintain blood sugar and fuel working muscle. Beware of sports drinks with artificial colors, flavoring agents, artificial sweeteners or preservatives. To preemptively combat dehydration here in Arizona, we have to create a strategy, a Hydration Strategy, on how to safely and effectively maximize the

body's water and sodium reserves. ½ oz of water per pound of body weight per day is a good start. Generally, water is a matter of personal taste, so try various brands and pH levels. I go with a higher 8.0 pH Sprouts water and add my own electrolytes. For electrolytes, I use Skratch Labs Sport Hydration Drink Mix. Its electrolyte profile actually matches what is lost in sweat (800 mg sodium, 80 mg potassium, 100 mg calcium and 80 mg of magnesium per liter). For training on an extra hot day or over a longer duration, I switch to Skratch Labs Hyper Hydration Drink Mix. It has a much higher sodium content than the Sport Hydration and will pro-actively increase the body's water and sodium reserves. I use it sparingly. It's not suitable for a mellow one hour bike ride or run, or rounds of golf or sets of pickleball.

A SAMPLE HYDRATION STRATEGY Below are some strategies I use to keep hydrated during the year: n

I aim to drink about 20 oz of water/ electrolytes per hour of training. I

One or two 10 oz plastic hip flasks containing Sprouts 8.0 pH alkaline water and a tablespoon of organic honey in each. Very small sips of from these every 20 or so minutes; Huma energy gels, one gel every hour, and lastly; I use home-made protein bars as my solid food source during my workouts. A ½ thumb-sized piece every 30 minutes should not cause any gastric discomfort.

HULTSMAN REPORT: www.suncitygrand.com Strategic Planning

The assignment given to the 70 +/- volunteers was to prepare a report to the board advising them of the best approach to satisfy the requests of some chartered clubs for additional space. At the same time, CAM has some needs as well. Then, there are all the other residents who would like to make use of meeting rooms as well as enjoy the open areas around our beautiful campus. After several months of investigation, the Space Allocation Committee was reduced in size to a Solutions Committee. Here, a report was finalized with the recommendations. First, the clubs seeking additional space were prioritized into 3 groups. The highest priority was given to the Music/ Comedy/Drama Clubs, Glass Arts/Clay Arts clubs. Middle priority went to the Stitchers and Grand Photo clubs. The lowest priority

went to the Computer and Billiards clubs. A drawing was prepared to show where additional space could be created to satisfy these requests. This drawing shows construction to add space to existing buildings as well as a new building. When Del Webb submitted plans to the city, it included a building that was approved but never built. This committee is suggesting the building be constructed at two stories with a full basement. This new structure would provide storage for the Drama Club stage sets, property (large furniture and heavy objects) and current show props and costumes. Additionally, space would be used for rehearsals/auditions, Grandette practice, expansion of CAM Acitvity Office, CAM storage, liquor delivery and storage and Music Club risers. Some of these clubs reserve hundreds of rooms a year because they

have no dedicated space. This new construction, when completed, will open up these rooms for use by the community. That includes rooms in the fitness centers that have wooded floors needed for rehearsals. These rooms could then be used for more of the popular fitness classes. It’s a win-win all around. The report was presented to the Board of Directors at a meeting on Friday March 8th. They will consider it and, if accepted, pass it on to the Long Range Planning Committee for consideration. See the drawing for a general idea of where construction might take place, if approved. Reference: A,G....................MUSIC/DRAMA D,E.......GLASS ARTS/CLAY ARTS C.............................. FROM THE SOFTBALL CLUB

CHALLENGE

USA vs. CANADA

Written by: Chuck Cruz

The Sun City Grand Red League Annual Canada vs. USA softball game took place under a cooperating warm sunny day that I’m sure contributed to the outstanding attendance for the event. The fans were treated to two action filled games where the players on both teams showed off their offensive and defensive skills that kept the interest of everyone. While treating the onlookers to some quality softball games, the real objective was to raise money to assist in the ongoing endeavor to find a cure for cancer. In the opening ceremony Jim Palzer gave a short presentation about the passionate campaign he has been waging to raise funds to assist in the research efforts to find a cure for this disease which has touched all of us in some way including our Sun City Grand Softball Club closely knit family. 18

Mr. Palzer then turned the microphone over to Don Nelson, a seasoned Red League ball player for many years who is currently battling pancreatic cancer. His articulate narration of the personal battle he is currently waging against the disease left everyone hypnotized. Thank you Don for your courage and strength to stand in front of us divulging your plight and also putting things in proper perspective for all of us. This was truly your day! The Canada vs. USA softball games followed the color guard presentation and the two countries nation anthems. The teams were evenly matched defensively as both team’s players showcased their skills as the outfielders tracked down numerous fly balls hit to the warning track in the afternoon sun. The infielders followed suit handling numerous sharply hit grounders and a few double plays with ease. On the offensive

side, I guess you could say the USA team had the advantage with a few more long ball hitters. Both games somehow seemed to turn into home run derbies as both teams tried to upstage one another by launching the crowd pleasing four bagger. The USA team managed a respectable 4 run victory in the first game, and won the nightcap by a larger margin, but who is counting. By this time the players seemed to show their age just wanting their promised pizza and liquid refreshments. Special thanks to everyone who was involved in making this outing a success (sorry, too many names to give individual recognition): the organizers, the field crew, the announcers, the color guard, the coaches, the players, the fans and most important the weather! Don Nelson you are always in our thoughts and prayers.

We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

CHANGES TO USE RESTRICTIONS (EXHIBIT C OF THE CC&RS)

By Larry Marden

4. Added that lakes may be used for permitted fishing.

On February 14, 2019 the Board of Directors approved certain changes to the Use Restrictions found in exhibit C of the CC&Rs. The Board is given the authority to do this pursuant to article 11.2 section a. Section c further requires that the homeowners be given 30 days notice of any changes before the new document may take effect. The appearance of this notice in the Grand Lifestyles will serve to comply with that requirement. The new Exhibit C will take effect on May 1, 2019.

5. Added the ability to keep garage doors open while working in the garage.

Much of the document has been cleaned up and references to Del Webb have been removed. The new exhibit C has very few major changes, which are summarized below:

Our community is in the home stretch. Therefore, the Consent Committee is asking all residents to reach out to their friends and neighbors to round up the rest of the signatures needed to update and improve our CC&Rs and Bylaws. Nearly 5,000 consents have been received and recorded by the Membership Office. That means we are more than two-thirds of the way to our goal. Our community needs your help…now!! Before the winter residents leave our amazing community, please talk to as many of them as you can. Encourage them to visit www.suncitygrand.com and click on the “How to Consent” circle to review the many benefits of the proposed changes, download and sign a Consent Form, and drop it off in any of the Consent ballot boxes throughout the community or at the Membership Office in the Palm Center. If everyone who has signed the Consent Form was to convince another person to do the same, Sun City Grand would be operating with up-to-date CC&Rs and Bylaws with harmful clauses removed.

Board members serving on committees will no longer be permitted to vote on matters before the committee. Officers of the Board (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer) will be required to be homeowners, and the term limits for Board members will be clearly defined. The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) will no longer have final say over changes to the Common areas. The Board will be able to intervene if the actions taken by the ARC are deemed detrimental to the Association. Voting for future Board members will occur only if there are more candidates than positions open. Irrigation 101 down a wire to a solenoid on your irrigation valve and then your valve opens allowing water to flow through to your plants.

WHAT IS AN IRRIGATION SYSTEM? At a recent Neighborhood Reps meeting, I was asked to write an article about landscape irrigation, because most people really don’t know how much to water or when to water. Everyone has a control timer on the side of their house, but few know how to program it. Most people have a “Rain Dial” or a “Hunter” Controller installed at their homes.

Irrigation Valves

Your controller is the brains of the operations telling your valves what to do. Your irrigation valves are connected to a Backflow valve. This valve is very important and required by law because it Rain Dial

Hunter Rain Dial

protects your drinking water from being contaminated by your irrigation system. You don’t want contaminated water from your yard siphoning back into your kitchen faucet.

The function of these or any other controller is to turn on and off an irrigation valve for a period of time. Controllers transform high voltage electricity to low voltage. They are very similar to other transformers you use every day to charge your phone, laptop computer or run your LED lights. The controller sends a low voltage charge

If you have a leak in your irrigation, turning off your controller may not shut off the water. To turn off your irrigation water shut off your Backflow valve by turning the lever so it is perpendicular to the valve. See the photo of the Backflow

valve. If you have fountain or pool, you will have a Backflow valve for that as well so make sure you turn off the right Backflow valve. These three items controller, valve and backflow valve make up the major components of an irrigation system. Of course, there are other items like pipe underground and drip emitters above ground, but the most important items are those three.

WHAT IS IRRIGATION? Irrigation is simply putting back moisture in the ground that evaporated away and was used by your plants. Rain is irrigation. When it rains, you must turn off your irrigation system by either turning off the Backflow valve or turning off your controller. How long should you keep it off? A full day’s rain in winter will provide enough water to last 3 weeks and in the summer for 4 days. If you have native desert plants, you can keep your irrigation off for 6 weeks in winter and 2 weeks in summer after a good rain. Plants thrive when they get rain water because it is not treated with chemicals. I am going to share a secret that must not tell anyone, because I don’t want to see any Sun City Grand residents going into the water management business and competing with me – so keep it hush hush. My secret is to shut off the irrigation as much as possible in the winter. Look for my next article about determining how much water your landscape needs. Jim Kauth CLWM, CLIA Jim is a Certified Landscape Water Manager by the EPA and the Irrigation Association. He is also the Management Representative here at Sun City Grand who manages our common area irrigation system.

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE

MOVEMENT

Matters Nancy Wilson, R.N. Director of Resident Services The Colonnade

There are many reasons why we tend to slow down and become more sedentary with age. It may be due to health problems, weight or pain issues, a dislike of exercising or worries about falling. But as we grow older, an active lifestyle becomes more important than ever to helping maintain and improve our overall health.

What are the benefits of exercise for older adults? A 44-year long Swedish study, recently describe in the journal Neurology, found that physical activity was the No. 1 contributor to longevity, adding extra years to life — even for those who started exercising later in life. But getting active is not just about adding years to life, it’s about adding life to years. Chance are you’ll not only feel better when you exercise, you’ll be sharper, more energetic and experience a greater sense of wellbeing. Here are additional benefits that come from an active lifestyle.

Physical health benefits Helps you maintain or lose weight. As metabolism naturally slows with age, maintaining a healthy weight can be challenging. Exercise helps increase metabolism and builds muscle mass, helping to burn more calories. n Reduces the impact of illness and chronic disease. People who exercise tend to have improved immune and digestive functioning, better blood n

pressure and bone density, and a lower risk of Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis and certain cancers. n Enhances mobility, flexibility and balance. Exercise improves your strength, flexibility and posture, which also aids balance, coordination and reduces the risk of falls. Strength training also helps mitigate the symptoms of chronic conditions such as arthritis.

Mental health benefits n

n

n

Improves sleep. Quality sleep is vital for your overall health. Regular activity can help you fall asleep more quickly, sleep more deeply and wake feeling more energetic and refreshed. Boosts mood and self-confidence. Exercise is a huge stress reliever and the endorphins produced can actually help reduce feelings of sadness, depression, or anxiety. Being active and feeling strong naturally helps you feel more self-confident. The Body-Mind Connection. Activities like Sudoku or crossword puzzles can help keep your brain active, but little comes close to the beneficial effects of exercise on the brain. It can help brain functions as diverse as multitasking and creativity and can help prevent memory loss, cognitive decline and dementia. Getting active may even help slow the progression of brain disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.

Grand Lifestyles | April 2019 | suncitygrand.com

Overcoming obstacles Starting or maintaining a regular exercise routine can be a challenge at any age, and it doesn’t get any easier as you age. You may feel discouraged by health problems, aches and pains, or concerns about injuries or falls. If you've never exercised before, you may not know where to begin. If you were active when you were younger, you may be frustrated that your reflexes, strength, endurance and other measures of fitness, aren’t what they used to be. Or maybe you just think that exercise is boring. While these may seem like good reasons to slow down and take it easy, the benefits of leading an active life far outweigh a couch-potato existence. Becoming more active can energize your mood, relieve stress, help manage symptoms of illness and pain and improve your overall health. And reaping the rewards of exercise doesn’t have to involve strenuous workouts or joining a cross-fit gym. It’s about adding more movement and activity to your life, even in small ways. We are looking for SCG men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. Call Monica Rodriguez (CAM) 623-546-7468 or the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us!

OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2018 ✓ 3,540 HOUSE INSPECTIONS ✓ 1,327 OPEN GARAGE DOOR NOTIFICATIONS The above are just some of the 2018 accomplishments of your Sun City Grand C.H.A.P.S. The following numbers are reported to our fellow residents: VACATION WATCH Homes Inspected............................3,540 Inspection Days.................................103 Unlocked Windows........................... 29 Water Leaks....................................... 12 Packages Left...................................... 10 Other.................................................. 25 Daily House Count High (July)....... 349 House inspectors also report any storm damage to key holders, remove newspapers from driveways and

business cards from front doors, all which say “come on in, no one is at home.” Remember that you can request C.H.A.P.S. Vacation Watch by completing and submitting a Vacation Watch request form from the Membership Office if you will be away from your home for two weeks or longer at any time of the year. EVENING PATROL Open Garage Doors....................... 1,327 Patrol Teams.....................................457 Street Lights Out............................. 298 Police Calls........................................ 26

A garage door carelessly left open in the evening is an open invitation to the theft of your garage property, the burglary of your house, and even physical harm to house residents. Keep your garage door closed at all times. All of the above was done to serve the home owners and protect the security of Sun City Grand residents, whether at home year-round or away from Grand for a vacation or an extended trip. If you would like to volunteer with C.H.A.P.S. please come to our next general membership meeting on Tuesday, April 23 at 1:30 P.M. at the Sonoran Plaza. All residents are welcome to join C.H.A.P.S.

C.H.A.P.S. meets next on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. in the Sonoran Plaza. EVERYONE IS WELCOME. MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH C.H.A.P.S.

A FEW LAST THOUGHTS ON THE 2019 BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION

This year the Grand Election Team worked hard to increase the number of electronic votes, and we succeeded in that of all the votes cast only 66 were from paper ballots. So thank you to all the residents who tried it and liked it! A few of you even commented on the ease of voting that way and I would like to share some of those comments with you. We do not know who made the comments only that they were attached to the submitted ballot and sent to us by our Vendor.

running doesn’t even have to own a home here in Grand (a great reason to agree to the revisions and consent). The biggest “hassle” is probably filling out the application. The procedure is as follows: a candidate who wishes to run fills out an application and attends the required meeting where the election rules are discussed. The Board has no involvement in the selection or evaluation of the candidates. They find out who is running at the required meeting if they choose to attend.

“Great System, very clear and concise. No reason for not voting.”

Many comments reflected a recurring theme: “Why have an election when there are 3 open positions and 3 candidates running? It’s a waste of time and money.” As was stated in the letter sent to all residents and in several e-mails, our present Bylaws require us to have an election no matter the number of open positions or the number of candidates. One of the changes proposed in the revision of the CC&Rs and the Bylaws addresses this and if the consent passes this could be avoided in the future. One last question that arose was, “I own two homes. Do I get to vote twice?” Again, the letter sent to all residents stated that you had one vote per home owned, but you would vote each time with a different unique code that would be provided to you in an email and in a letter sent to you. The codes are attached to the address of each home owned. I am sorry that for some the explanation that you get a vote for each home owned was

“Thank you for making this so easy.” “Thank you Grand Election Team for your professional effort in presenting this method of voting.” “Electronic voting was a definite improvement over paper ballots.” Of course, not all of the comments were positive and some even contained misconceptions about the process. One person said, “I believe the reason we don’t get more great candidates is the requirements and hassle to get on the ballot. Why does the board evaluate the candidates to determine who has the HOA requirements to run?” At this time the Board Election is a self-nominating process. There are no requirements. In fact, under our present Bylaws the person

not clear. We will try to do better next year.

One last thought . . . our newest board members decided to give back to the community not knowing at the time they submitted their applications how many would run for the 3 seats. As always, we hoped for an actual election. In the end it was only the 3 of them. We thank them for their willingness to serve on the Board and help guide SCG into the future. Next year there will be 4 open positions. Will there be just 4 candidates? I hope some of you will begin the process of thinking and planning for a 2020 run for the Board of Directors. As the facilitator of the Grand Election Team I can tell you that when there is an actual election the Team very much looks forward to holding the Q and A and the Round Table events so that each resident has an opportunity to hear the candidates’ views on various issues. It’s what we plan for and work toward each year. If you know someone who you think would make a good board member, talk to them about running. Sometimes asking is all it takes to get someone thinking. A little encouragement can go a long way! We look forward to the 2020 election. It will be here before you know it. We’ll encounter marine life and sea birds and enjoy remarkable photo opportunities. From here we’ll head to Old Town, a state protected historic neighborhood which includes many buildings from the period of 1820-1870. Known as the birthplace of San Diego, Old Town is home to charming shops & galleries, great little restaurants and historical sites. We’ll enjoy lunch on self, in Old Town, before hopping aboard one of the Old Town Trolleys; an amazing way to experience San Diego’s most exciting attractions. We’ll do the loop together past Hotel del Coronado, Balboa Park, Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy, the Whaley House, Star of India and so much more! Late afternoon we’ll return to our hotel to enjoy dinner on self and a free evening. We’ll travel comfortably through the fields in hay wagons drawn by antique tractors, an annual tradition that has become part of the area’s local heritage. OLD RIM ROAD SCENIC DRIVE We’re off to travel Arizona’s Forest Road 300—The Old Rim Road. Although there are many ways to approach this journey, we’ll begin in Payson, where we’ll enjoy some scrumptious Mexican food on self, at El Rancho Mexican Restaurant, a great favorite with not only the locals, but also Arizona Highways—who named El Rancho one of the top 25 restaurants in Arizona. The food’s delicious, the price is right and the menu offers something for everyone. After lunch our journey really begins. We’ll make our way along the Mogollan Rim, a massive wall of rock that is thousands of feet tall and hundreds of miles long, beginning at the Arizona/ New Mexico border and stretching across most of the state. Pronounced “muggy-on” by locals, the Rim offers some of the most breathtaking, jaw dropping scenery that the state of Arizona has to offer. The scenery is always changing as we travel through the world’s largest stand of Ponderosa pines, and intersect what was once the General Crook Trail—a historic wagon route that was used in the 1880’s to provide support for General Crook in the U.S. Army’s war against the Apaches. We’ll travel through the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest into the Coconino National forest—with an eye out for elk and mule deer, as we make our way into the Pine/ Strawberry region where our road ends. We’ll make a pit stop before hightailing it back to the Valley. This is a wonderful springtime tour. Don’t miss it! *This trip is offered in conjunction with Kindred Tours. BRYCE CANYON & ZION NATIONAL PARKS Day One: We’ll leave the Valley with a stop for coffee & goodies on our way to Cameron Trading Post for lunch on self. Nestled along the Colorado River, and just 30 minutes south of the Grand Canyon, this trading post has been catering to Arizona tourists since the early 1900’s, serving great food at moderate prices. After lunch it’s back on the bus and we’ll hit it for Kanab, Utah—an incredibly scenic drive that takes us through Navajo land with views of Marble Canyon, Lake Powell, Glen Canyon Dam and more. After checking into our hotel, we’ll take a little time for a refresh, gather for our own Happy Hour and then head out for dinner on self. Later we’ll enjoy a free evening. Day Two: A hot buffet breakfast is included at the hotel, and then it’s back on the bus and we’re headed for Zion National Park. Zion is a spectacular cliff and canyon landscape, a wondrous wilderness— including Kolob Arch—the world’s largest natural arch, with a span that measures 310 feet. Zion is rich with beautiful colors, breathtaking scenery and wildlife such as mule deer, golden eagles and mountain lions. We’ll spend a little time familiarizing ourselves with the area at the visitor’s center and then we’ll tour Zion from the comfort of a tram. Hop on and off as you wish, and later we’ll enjoy a nice lunch on self, at one of the two restaurants at Zion. Late in the afternoon we’ll return to our hotel and after a refresh, we’ll gather for our own Happy Hour, included, before heading out for dinner on self. Later we’ll enjoy a free evening. Day Three: Once again, we’ll enjoy a hot breakfast buffet, included at the hotel, and then it’s back on the bus and we’re headed for Bryce Canyon National Park. The beauty of Bryce Canyon is beyond description. It has been called “a cave without a ceiling, a forest of stone.” We’ll tour Bryce from the comfort of our own bus, and we’ll all enjoy a delicious lunch on self, at Ruby’s Inn—where we’ll have two restaurants to choose from and their menus offer something for everyone. Bryce Canyon is a series of natural amphitheaters, with thousands of multicolored rock pinnacles called “hoodoos.” We’ll travel the 20-mile paved highway along the rim, overlooking magnificent views of the natural structures that were carved by erosion into graceful forms that glow with various colors. Late in the afternoon we’ll return to our hotel and after a refresh, we’ll gather for our own Happy Hour, before setting out for dinner on self. Later we’ll enjoy a free evening. Day Four: Breakfast is included at the hotel, and then it’s bags out and we're back on the bus headed for home. We’ll enjoy lots of great sightseeing and stops along the way. Our Brief History

Nancy Hayden Council Member, District 2

As we get ready to welcome the heat and say goodbye to our seasonal residents, it seems fitting to look at a brief history to explore the culture that Surprise offers. The beautiful town of Surprise developed its name on a fluke when our founder, Flora Statler, said, “I would be surprised if the town ever amounted to much.” Little did she know, in 1938, that the one square mile piece of farmland would end up as one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation! It’s hard to imagine the six lanes of Grand Avenue was

Flora Statler

once a trail called Vulture Road. After harvesting, mule teams would use Vulture Road to take goods to mining communities. In 1868, a stagecoach line began operation, running for 30 years. The railroad was welcomed in 1895 when lines officially opened to the Phoenix area. In 1941, the City of Phoenix leased 1440 acres of land to Luke Air Force Base for $1 a year which was the beginning of the base. During WWII, Luke was the largest fighter training base in the Army Air Forces. Many residents would be interested to learn that the current City Hall is located on the site of one of Luke’s former auxiliary airfields, to which you are still able to see the runways via aerial view. Surprise was growing and changing long before it officially became incorporated in 1960. Changing from farm fields to military bases to rows of homes, the land of Surprise

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT

CELL PHONE STORAGE Dear Cappie, I own an iPhone which is slowing down and acting sluggish. My wife’s Android also has performance issues. We use our phones for taking photos and videos, text messaging, social media, gaming, internet searches, etc. Recently I got a message saying I didn’t have enough storage, but my phone is relatively new. What is the problem? Ken from Sun City Grand

Dear Ken, Because of your extensive phone usage, it is most likely that storage is an issue. Regardless how new your two smartphones are, if you purchased models with minimal 32 or 64 GB (Gigabytes) of storage capacity, most likely you have come close to filling up the limited storage with apps, games, email, messages, etc. and are running out of space. When your total storage is over 75% capacity, the phone’s processing power slows down and so does the performance. Because the operating systems of the iPhone and Android differ in accessing storage, cleanup methods, and options available, we will focus on iPhone cleanup in this article, and Android cleanup next month.

APPS TAKE UP SPACE

To check the amount of space your apps use, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. At the top there is a chart listing how much of your phone’s space is being taken up by Apps, Media, Photos, Mail and Other. Scroll down to view all your apps, amount of space each uses, and the last time you accessed each app. n Delete any app you don’t use by holding the icon of the app on your home screen. When the app icon starts jiggling, click the “X” in the upper left of the icon to delete (but be aware this will also get rid of any files/information you have stored in the app).

64

Another option is to offload the apps: their icons will stay on your home screen and their data will stay on your phone, but if you tap their icon to open the app, your phone must download the app again. To manually offload any app you rarely use but still want to keep its’ data: Go to the iPhone Storage screen and click on any app and select Offload App—or if you prefer, the iPhone can help you decide, especially if you don’t want to manually review every app you have. This option is available on the iPhone Storage screen or you can go to Settings > iTunes & App Store and click on Offload Unused Apps at the bottom of the screen, and unused apps will be taken off your phone. n For apps you still use, delete files downloaded to your device you no longer want. For example, music/ podcast apps may have downloaded songs/episodes or online reading/ streaming apps (Kindle, iBook, Audible, Amazon, Netflix, etc.) may have downloaded books/movies (for use offline). If any of your apps take up a lot of space, check if the app is storing old files you wish to keep. n

MESSAGE APP STORAGE TIPS

Messages app takes up a lot of space, especially when a text includes photos, videos, and other files. By default, they are never deleted unless the user does so. A good way to save space on your phone is to move your messages to iCloud. Go to Settings > Name > iCloud and turn Messages on. You can also manually delete conversations by opening your message app, swiping left and clicking delete on each conversation or delete old

Special thanks to Sun City Grand resident Cheryll, for submitting a photo of her darling 15 year old pup, Mandy. View/print the digital version of “Ask Cappie” monthly column by going to www.grandinfo.com. Click on the More News>Grand Lifestyles Magazine> to choose the month you want to view. messages automatically. Go to Settings > Messages >Message History> Keep Messages. Select 30 days or 1 year to clear out your oldest messages. Then go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage>Messages and click Review Large Attachments to see if there are any large files hiding in your messages that you can clear out.

PHOTO AND VIDEO SPACE ISSUES

Photos (and Videos) are the biggest space hogs on most smartphones. No need to delete your entire photo collection to free up space, but the number of photos stored on your device can be cut by deleting duplicates and unnecessary photos. n A more efficient option is to move

Grand Lifestyles | April 2019 | suncitygrand.com

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT your photos to the cloud. If you use iCloud, you’ll still have some photos on your phone, but everything beyond the most recent pictures will be in the cloud. Turn on cloud storage by going to Settings > Name > iCloud > Photos, turn on iCloud Photo Library. iCloud storage space has 5GB by default. If you need more, you’ll have to pay ($0.99 for 50GB per month). Once your photos are on iCloud, you can also save photo storage space by turning on Optimize iPhone Storage, which keeps only

Grand Lifestyles | April 2019 | suncitygrand.com

small versions of photos on your local device, while the high-resolution version will still be saved in iCloud. n Another option is to use third-party photo storage services like Google Photos or Amazon Photo. n You can also manually back up your photos to your computer using iTunes and choose which photos you want to be synched with your phone. n Videos take up even more space than photos but you can downscale your video recording settings. Newer

iPhones can record up to 4K video at 60 fps. That setting creates a very sharp video, but if you don’t need super high-resolution footage, don’t waste the storage space. In your Camera settings change the option under Record Video to a lower quality. If, after trying all the options above, you still are having storage issues, take a visit to your Apple Store to see if there may be another issue…or take the plunge and buy a new phone with 128, 256, or 512 GB!
