NETWORKING The Benefits of

Over the years, we have often been asked, “how come you never talk with others in the industry to find out what they are doing?”

Staff using contacts and industry peers as sounding boards not only benefits individuals but also contributes to the broader community. When professionals share knowledge, insights, and strategies, the ripple effect strengthens the entire industry.

ACCOUNTABILITY

COLLABORATION

EXPERIENCE NETWORK

SUPPORT IDEAS

Here’s how networking with others can have a positive impact on the community:

n Collective Knowledge Growth: As professionals share their experiences, the entire community benefits from the pooled knowledge. One company’s success can inspire others to implement new approaches. This is done internally and externally.

n Raising Industry Standards: When individuals and organizations collaborate, they set benchmarks for quality, ethics, and service. These shared standards raise expectations across the industry, creating a healthier, more competitive environment. Many members of the management team are part of professional organizations that they can also reach out to.

n Problem Solving on a Larger Scale: Networking allows for collective problemsolving. When challenges arise, a united approach is often more effective.

n Building a Collaborative Ecosystem: Strong professional relationships can lead to collaboration between companies, industries, or regions. This cooperative mindset drives innovation, sparks new ideas, and opens doors to joint ventures or shared resources.

n Increased Accountability: When professionals are connected, there’s a higher sense of responsibility to perform well. The knowledge that you can be held accountable by your peers encourages better performance, and decision-making.

n Community Support: During tough economic times or industry downturns, a strong professional network provides a safety net. Professionals who have built rapport with others are often the first to offer help, share past experiences, or provide advice on navigating difficult times.

Every interaction, whether it’s sharing a piece of advice or offering support, strengthens the entire industry. The more we help each other, the more resilient and successful the community becomes. Building a network is not just for personal gain but for the well-being and growth of the entire field.

So, to answer the question, myself and other team members often reach outside of the community to ask questions, gain information and become more knowledgeable based on others’ past experiences.

GOLF CART RULES ON THE COURSE: A Guide to Etiquette and Safety

Golf carts are an integral part of the golfing experience, providing convenience and helping golfers navigate large courses. However, they come with a set of rules and etiquette that should be followed to ensure safety, maintain the integrity of the course, and respect fellow players. Whether you're a seasoned golfer or new to the game, understanding the rules for golf carts will enhance your experience and contribute to a positive, well-maintained course.

1. Respect the "90-Degree Rule"

The "90-degree rule" is the preferred cart rule at The Grand. This rule allows carts to leave the cart path, but only at a 90-degree angle when approaching the ball in the fairway. Here's how to follow the rule properly:

n Exit the path at the 90-degree angle: Drive the cart directly from the cart path to your ball in the fairway, then return to the cart path at the same angle after your shot.

n Avoid driving too far off-path: Stick to the fairway and avoid driving into the rough or onto areas that are not designed for cart traffic. This helps protect the turf and prevents unnecessary damage.

n Designated cart paths: Some areas of the course might require you to stay on designated cart paths, particularly around greens and tees, to avoid damaging delicate areas.

n Where to park carts: Always park your

cart away from greens, tees, and bunkers. Many of our courses have specific spots for parking near these areas to minimize disruption to the game and avoid trampling the turf.

2. Drive Safely and Responsibly

Golf carts are not designed for speed, and driving recklessly can cause accidents, injure players, or damage the course. Here are some essential safety tips:

n Avoid sharp turns and sudden stops: Take turns carefully and gradually to avoid tipping the cart or causing a hazard to other players. Sudden stops or fast turns can cause cart accidents or disrupt the game.

n Respect other players: Always yield to walking golfers, as they have the right of way. Keep a safe distance from others to avoid collisions or distractions during their swings.

3. Stay on the Path

One of the most important rules regarding golf carts is to stay on the cart paths whenever possible. These paths are built to protect the course’s fragile grass and soil from being damaged by heavy traffic. Here’s what you need to keep in mind:

n Stay on cart paths near tees and greens: When you approach tee boxes and greens, make sure to follow the cart path and refrain from driving directly onto the grass.

n Use rough areas cautiously: In wet or soft conditions, it’s especially important to stick to the path to avoid creating ruts or damaging the terrain.

n Be mindful of restricted areas: Certain parts of the course, like areas with rope & stake, may be off-limits to carts for turf health reasons.

4. Be Mindful of Cart Etiquette

Golf cart etiquette is just as important as following the rules. Being courteous to fellow golfers and the course can help create a more enjoyable atmosphere for everyone. Some basic etiquette tips include:

n Don’t block the cart path: Avoid parking your cart in a way that blocks the path for other players or obstructs their view. Always park in designated areas.

n Limit your cart’s presence:

When not in use, leave the cart in a spot that won’t interfere with others’ play or slow down the game.

5. Check for Restrictions

Grand Golf courses may have restrictions on golf cart use based on weather or course conditions. Please visit the Frost Delay page at https:// livegrandaz.com/web/pages/frost-delays for up-to-date golf cart restrictions. For example:

n Weather: During periods of rain or muddy conditions, Grand Golf may restrict golf carts to Cart Path Only to mitigate damage to the turf.

n Frost delays: During frost delays, golf carts may be restricted to Cart Path Only until the frost has lifted.

6. Be Aware of the Environment

Grand Golf courses are surrounded by desert landscaping that can be

sensitive to damage from cart traffic. Here are some tips to follow:

n Avoid plant life: Grand Golf courses are surrounded by plant life. It would benefit the long-term health of these plants if golfers kept a reasonable distance from them when driving through the desert.

n Avoid drip lines & irrigation ports: To keep the plant life and desert landscaping maintained & healthy it is important to avoid irrigation drip lines, valve boxes, & multi-ports when driving through the desert landscape.

Conclusion

Golf carts are a convenient and efficient way to navigate the course, but they come with responsibilities. By following golf cart rules and adhering to course etiquette, you can contribute to a safe, enjoyable experience for yourself and fellow players.

…from monthly Trivia Challenges, to Karaoke and Game Nights…and weekly live music in the Village Center, we hope you will come out and enjoy all that Grand has to offer.

TRAIN YOUR FASCIAL SLINGS TO IMPROVE POSTURE, GAIT, AND ROTATIONAL MOVEMENT

(The human body is a pretty awesome and complex place. You probably know about muscles, bones, joints, tendons, and ligaments already, but do you know about anatomical muscle slings?

The sling systems refer to networks of neuromuscular tissues (fascia) that create a system around the body, connecting various muscle groups using chains, or slings, along and across the body. Think of it almost like a subway map.

However you enjoy exercising, knowing about the sling systems of the body will help you maximize your training efforts and results, increase fitness, build strength, stability, and muscle, and improve athletic performance.

Here’s everything you need to know about anatomical sling systems.

What are the body's principle sling systems?

Slings refer to a connection between muscle groups; there are four main sling systems in the human body, creating a network of fascia and muscles that sequence together. Many coaches, especially in the world of sports and athletes, will train athletes according to sling systems to improve the quality of movement. Strengthening your sling systems can improve stability, strength, balance, and power.

There are 4 major sling systems in the body: the anterior oblique sling (AOS), posterior oblique sling (POS), deep longitudinal sling (DLS), and lateral sling (LS).

Sling systems are sometimes referred to as "myofascial slings" - systems of muscles, fascias, and ligaments that interconnect and transmit forces during movement. These muscles may overlap or interconnect with other slings, depending upon the movement performed, to produce a dynamic movement. When these muscles activate and recruit together, your body can coordinate, balance, and stabilize properly during movement. If one muscle group becomes dysfunctional for whatever reason, whether it's due to under or over-activity or injury, this

can impact other muscle groups and parts of the body.

That’s why we can experience muscular imbalances from training. For example, some rotator cuff injuries can originate from tight and overworked pectoral muscles and lower back pain can be a symptom of tight or weak hamstrings, glutes, or hip flexor muscles. Interconnected muscle groups must be trained to work well together to help you move and function properly.

An added benefit to slings is that all of them cross over the thoracolumbar fascia at the base of the spine, the focus of so many back problems. Sling training enables the muscles in that region to take over much of the stress exercising and sports place on the spine.

Allison Adams Fitness Director

What are the muscles in the major sling systems?

The fascial sling systems can be broken down as:

n Anterior oblique sling (AOS): The pecs and external and internal obliques connect with the opposite side adductor muscles through a fascia called the adductorabdominal fascia. There are two slings (left pecs, abs to right adductors, and right pecs and abs with left adductors)

n Posterior oblique sling (POS): The latissimus dorsi, the opposite side gluteus maximus and the inter-connecting fascia called thoracolumbar fascia. This sling is also dual-sided

n Deep longitudinal sling (DLS): The erector spinae, multifidus, and hamstrings (the biceps femoris), connected via the thoracolumbar fascia to the calf

n Lateral sling (LS): The gluteus medius and minimus, tensor fascia latae, iliotibial band and adductors on the opposite side of the glutes.

Each sling system is responsible for its own unique set of movements or actions. The anterior sling supports actions like running, walking, throwing, and jumping and connects muscles diagonally through the front of the body from pecs to hips on both sides. Athletes looking to improve their performance in these types of sports can build more explosive and powerful muscles.

The posterior system connects muscles along the back of the body, including the lats, lower back and glutes. Training the muscles along this sling can include some rotation and agility style movement, but also lunges, hip hinge movements and squats.

The deep longitudinal sling also runs along the back of the body and includes the deep spinal back muscles down to the gastrocnemius (calf muscles). Together, these muscles are important for stabilization and can be targeted in a variety of ways, including using many TRX core exercises.

Finally, the lateral system includes the glutes, tensor fascia latae and adductors, working to help stabilize the hips and pelvis during movement. Training these muscle groups improves balance and stability and helps prevent injury.

How do you train for each sling system?

The approach to training the sling system is to think of the body as a whole unit of interconnected, and not isolated, muscles. When picking exercises, try to check the following boxes in the following sequence:

n Exercises that use two or more joints during their execution

n Exercises that flow or move in the direction of the sling you want to work

n Progressions for these exercises (difficulty of execution or change of direction, for example)

Exercises like woodchops train the anterior sling, while single-leg deadlifts

and rows hit the posterior sling. Deadlifts also work the longitudinal sling, and step-ups and their variants target the lateral sling.

Other exercises like reverse lunges and rotations hit both the anterior and posterior slings simultaneously, while gorilla rows target the posterior and longitudinal slings, single arm alternating kettlebell swings train the anterior and longitudinal muscles, and single-leg squats with an overhead press target the lateral and anterior slings.

Of course, these are jus t a few examples of exercises you could include, but your programming should look at your goals as a whole and be planned according to your training style and sports performance objectives.

2024 STATISTICS FOR C.H.A.P.S.

Morning and Evening Activities

C.H.A.P.S. volunteers were busy throughout 2024, most significantly handling a large volume of home inspections during the summer. Vacation Watch teams, starting their outings as early as 6:30 a.m., did more than 4,000 house inspections during the year. As in prior years, Evening Patrol teams found a large number of open garage doors. Receiving the thanks of grateful homeowners who did not know their garage door was open is one of the highlights of participating in C.H.A.P.S. These numbers for 2024 activities demonstrate the scale and importance of our activities. Please consider joining C.H.A.P.S. to become part of these services that help keep our community safe.

VACATION WATCH

EVENING PATROL

Surprise Citizens Patrol Visit

Two members of the Surprise Citizens Patrol gave a presentation at the November C.H.A.P.S. meeting. Started in 1997, this group of volunteers now has almost 50 members. Radar trailers, DUI assistance, special events, wellness checks and many other activities, including inspecting houses while owners are away, make patrol members the eyes and ears of the Surprise PD. In 2023, the patrol logged 22,803 hours of service and saved an estimated $800,000 for the City of Surprise.

VACATION WATCH

To request this service, fill out a Vacation Watch form that is available at the Welcome Center and the Membership Office at the Palm Center and online at www.livegrandaz.com Return the completed form to the Membership Office in the Palm Center. The homeowner must be away for a minimum of two weeks and a keyholder must be identified on the request form. C.H.A.P.S. volunteers will walk around the home and notify the designated keyholder if an irregularity is found.

EVENING PATROL

In the evening, volunteers patrol our streets in Association vehicles to observe and report unusual activities. The volunteers look for open garage doors and any other items that may pose a security or safety risk. Streetlight outages and road hazards will be reported to the proper authorities.

TO VOLUNTEER

C.H.A.P.S. welcomes new members at any time. All residents are welcome. We will provide classroom and field training. There is plenty of flexibility to volunteer on days that match your schedule. If you are interested, call the C.H.A.P.S. office (623) 546-7553 or ask any C.H.A.P.S. member for information. The next meeting is at 1:30pm in the Sonoran Plaza on Tuesday, February 25th.

Donations for C.H.A.P.S. to cover a variety of incidental expenses are accepted at the Membership Office. Make checks payable to Sun City Grand Community Association and write “Donation to C.H.A.P.S.” on the check. C.H.A.P.S.

Homeowners Association MANAGEMENT

This article is written to depict the pros and cons of management approaches for communities such as The Grand. As a Regional Director in the property management industry with 35 years of experience I have extensive knowledge of many aspects of property management including Homeowners Associations of varying sizes. I am a Certified Property Manager (IREM, inactive) and a CA real estate broker.

There typically is more than one way to get from point A to point B. This holds true for Homeowners Associations since they have differing methods available to them to administer their communities.

The choices are:

Self-Management or

Contract property management with an HOA Management Company

Here are some thoughts on both methods of management for a master planned community such as The Grand.

Community Self-Management

For large communities such as The Grand, self-management has many advantages. While it requires more community involvement through the board of directors or committees, it provides for a more hands-on approach to the unique management challenges and preferences of our community.

Advantages include but are not limited to administrative input via the General Manager on fronts such as recruitment, compensation, contracting and management policies in general. Staff management in particular benefits from a consistent community approach. After all, the staff are the

community’s employees, not the employees of a management company. In addition to community asset preservation and common area management, The Grand requires golf course management. In house golf course management provides for an all-inclusive approach for aspects such as landscape management, irrigation administration and more. The vast majority of property management companies do not provide that service and a golf course management company such as Troon Golf would have to be hired. This would result in significant additional expenses for the community, most likely based on a percentage of revenue. These expenses will undoubtedly result in significant increases in the costs per round of golf for members of our community.

Furthermore, self-management allows for the very active involvement by CAM staff (General Manager, Golf Director, Activities staff) to add that

Gabriele Dawson Board of Directors
Vice President

soft touch to management activities. A GM in a community such as ours spends time being visible at events and functions which adds a direct personal touch that is invaluable for the wellbeing of a community.

Most management companies are not set up to administer the vast array of community activities offered here at The Grand. Many of the hobby groups (charter clubs) require support in the form of reporting and sales handling in addition to specialized facility maintenance. These community activities bring with them the need to maintain the facilities for these activities such as tennis, pickle ball, bocce and lawn bowling.

The Grand’s extensive community buildings, pools, food locations and green spaces require focused attention daily.

A community using self-management can impact the administrative functions of that community such as communications, computer software or accounting methods. A management company must maintain standardized processes since their contracts with all their clients have to be considered. Therefor customization is very hard to come by.

Property Management Company

Staff turnover in the Property Management industry is very high, the average is 33% per year, which is 11% higher than nationally published employee turnover statistics. High personnel turnover is almost inevitable – HOA management is a real estate discipline that is not for everybody. Burn out and lack of experience often take a toll. While nobody plans for frequent turnover in key management positions, it is a fact. Property Managers/Community Managers (GM equivalent) turnover can reach as high as 40% in a calendar year. Key accounting positions and the important executive assistant positions also turn over with great

frequency. Each turnover brings with it the strong possibility of things falling through the proverbial cracks – inventories cannot be found; transaction details are not recorded anywhere, or community projects are left incomplete during such a transition. Frequent staff changes are likely to result in operational challenges and resident dissatisfaction.

Each turnover results in costs for the community and loss of effectiveness during position vacancies and learning curves.

The Community does not have control over HR methods and policies or hiring criteria and employee management. Afterall, the site staff members are employees of the management company and not of the community. This impacts all areas of personnel management from performance coaching to incentive administration.

It is a fact that a Property Management Company will try their best to make the cost of a new contract palatable for the client. To achieve that goal something has to give. This typically means that the community is provided with a less experienced manager whose salary reflects that level of skill.

To backfill that lower skill level, the management company assures the client that executive oversight will guarantee consistent management excellence. However, the executive oversight is spread thin since the Executive will have many GMs reporting to her or him and, most importantly, is not on site.

Administrative expenses are high - a typical HOA management company charges an average of 8% of the total monthly assessments as their management fee, with the exact percentage depending on the community size, services provided, and location. Additional expenses in the form of cost pass throughs for postage, copies and other support services add up quickly and can amount to significant $$$.

Hiring a management company typically does not result in increased team consistency. Quite the opposite is true. Management companies regularly restructure management assignments which then results in new senior manager assignments for a community. This is prevalent when management companies take on new clients and thus reassign their managers to new portfolios. Every such turnover results in lost time and efficiencies.

Most HOA management companies use specialized accounting software designed for community associations to handle payroll, including features for tracking employee hours, calculating deductions, and generating paystubs. The client community does not have the ability to request a specific accounting and payroll method.

Conclusion

For very large master planned communities with extensive amenities, grounds and facilities, self-management provides definite advantages over contract management. Staff administration, cost oversight, accounting methods among other aspects benefit from the direct management approach that selfadministration allows. Community staff are not the employees of another company and the community, through the BOD and General Manager sets the tone for the staff and the community culture.

Self-management avoids significant management fees plus administrative surcharges. In our case The Grand also avoids additional management cost for the administration of our 4 golf courses. While contract management can be effective for smaller communities with minimal facilities and amenities it cannot provide the hands on impact of self management.

FISHING WITH WIND RIVER CANYON WHITEWATER & FLY FISHING

Darren Calhoun, owner, and his team of guides offer exclusive whitewater rafting trips and guided fly fishing trips in the Wind River Canyon, located on the Wind River Indian Reservation in west central Wyoming.

The Wind River begins in the upper reaches of the eastern slope of Wyoming’s Wind River Range, winding its way south and east onto the Wind River Indian Reservation. As the river flows through the canyon, it transforms, creating incredible whitewater rapids, beautiful long riffles, smooth pools, and deep runs, all of which equals amazing habitat for unbelievably large trout. Bring a friend and come and enjoy the beautiful scenery and fishing stories as Darren shares this amazing river with us, and he might share an Arizona roping story too! He can be reached at www.windrivercanyon.com and 307-864-9343.

He dominated the pop music scene for many years and when he began to fade, his 1968 concert made everyone remember why he was such a force to be reckoned with. His incredible voice and his ability to create emotion in his music created a star that spanned generations. His tragic early death solidified his place among the music giants. His home in Graceland is still constantly besieged with visitors and fans from all over the world. Come and relive his story.

Meets 1 time on Fr 2/28/25 2–4pm | $13 | Havasupai-Maricopa

In our real world, how do Deaf people deal with the daily challenges of everyday life if they have little or no hearing at all? Maybe we are your next door neighbors here in The Grand, or a relative in your family? You might have seen us on TV or in the movies? You might see Deaf people communicating in Sign Language but are unsure of how to approach us to talk with us? In this class, we want to share some interesting facts about the Deaf Community, and how we communicate with others who do not know American Sign Language ( ASL). Can we drive a car, what kind of jobs can we do or have had before our retirement? You would be surprised to "hear" how far we have come along since the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) passed in Congress in July of 1990. Some of us have accomplished far more than the average person with normal hearing. What to say or not to say when you meet a deaf person. How do we identify ourselves? Are we deaf, Deaf or Hearing Impaired? What are the pros and cons of being deaf? We have our own Deaf Culture, stories and deaf jokes. Those are just a sample of the things we can discuss in this class. How has technology helped us over the past 50 or so years? Ask us questions with the assistance of a professional sign language interpreter. We are here to educate you. Class is being sponsored by the Language Club.

GIBBS, JEFF

4:30–6pm | $33 | Havasupai-Maricopa

There has been much discussion in recent years about water sustainability, both worldwide and in the Desert Southwest. It now appears that, in the future, water sustainability will be closely aligned with at least two other factors: Energy and Climate Change.

This class will explore the inter-relationships among these factors as they are likely to impact our way of life in the years ahead. In the first session, we will take a close look at concepts such as sustainability, systems theory, theory of constraints, causal maps and carrying capacity. We will also provide an overview of the current status of water sustainability and the likely impact of climate change on sustainability.

The second and third sessions will take an indepth look at a new resource constraint which is likely to impact our future sustainability: Energy. Session Two will focus on existing energy demand factors such as residential and industrial

applications along with new, emerging factors such as artificial intelligence, crypto currencies and electric vehicles. Session Three will deal with existing and future means of energy production –from atomic energy and hydro power generation to new potential sources such as nuclear fusion.

The final session in this class will bring all these factors together to provide an overview of our likely resource sustainability in the years ahead, and will also take a look at both current and projected government projects from both the Federal and state level to address our sustainability challenges.

This is a NEW class involving considerable original course material. For that reason, the sessions are planned for every TWO weeks from the beginning of March until mid-April (March 4, 18, April 1 and 15)

If you are a devotee of U.S. history, join us as we review the remarkable group of personalities who developed this inspiration, the politicians who made it happen, the acquisition of the camels and their transport to the U.S., the camels (Seid, Tuili, and a cast of nearly one-hundred), and their hired handlers (Hadji "Hi Jolly" Ali). We will also discuss Lt. Edward Beale, the Mexican War hero who would command the force of men and the newly introduced camels as they traversed present-day northern Arizona into California, the results of the "camel experiment", and the fading of these men and animals into the lore of western history.

VAN LEENAN, DIRK

Meets 1 time on Mo 4/7/25

2–4pm | $13 | Havasupai/Maricopa

Hear about the Holocaust in The Netherlands where author Dirk van Leenen experienced the atrocities of the Nazis. His father who was the head of the Resistance in The Hague, was in charge of hiding the Jews who were hunted down by the Nazis. More than 1000 Jews were brought into hiding places on farms all over the country. Many crises were created by the Nazis as they had turned off electricity and water. Food became on rationing. In the end his family was arrested and sent to a concentration camp.

This time the holocaust of WW2 has even more meaning because of what is presently happening in Israel. Some call it a second holocaust!

His one-hour talk will be illustrated with a slideshow, followed by a Question and Answer session and book signing. Come hear his story!

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE “MUMMIES” OF NAZCA, PERU FARRELL, ROBERT

Meets 1 time on Th 4/10/25

2–4pm | $30 | Havasupai-Maricopa

Something historic is happening in Nazca, Peru. In early 2017 several “unusual” bodies and parts of bodies were examined after being given to the Inkari Institute in Cusco, Peru in late 2016. The location of the find as well as the name of the discoverer have been kept secret to prevent graverobbing. All of the bodies are hominid, still have all of their internal organs but have only three fingers and three toes as shown in the Gaia photo. The bodies have all been preserved for perhaps thousands of years and have not had any internal organs removed. Some of the bodies which are only two feet tall, are believed to be reptilian and have a skeleton structure similar to a frog. Computer tomography of this species does not show any evidence of lungs or digestive tract. They died about 1,100 years ago. Their DNA does not match anything on record. Maria, the larger species, except for being tridactyl, looks very human. She has been carbon dated to have died about 1700 years ago. The genetic studies indicate that Maria has only about 25% human-like DNA. She seems to have ended in a violent death by predator animals.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND NOAH’S FLOOD: REDEMPTION OF ZECHARIA SITCHIN FARRELL, ROBERT

Meets 1 time on Th 4/17/25 2–4pm | $30 | Havasupai-Maricopa

Have you ever wondered if the story of Noah in the Bible is true? The evidence is overwhelming that it is true. In Dr. Farrell’s PowerPoint presentation, he discusses Sir Leonard Wooley’s discovery that removed any doubt that there was a major Deluge as described in the Old Testament. Ancient stories such as the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh and Atrahasis, the Babylonian epic that predate the Old Testament, will be discussed. The late Zecharia Sitchin’s melting glacier theory will be discussed and extrapolated arguing that the deluge event recorded by the Babylonians and Sumerians occurred in Mesopotamia about 14,500 years ago and was a result of the Post Glacial Sea Rise. The recent discovery of the world’s oldest monolithic ruins, Gobekli Tepe, in southern Turkey, ties this theory to the story of Noah and his ancestor, Abraham.

Meets 1 time on Th 4/24/25

In this PowerPoint lecture Dr. Farrell discusses the history of astronomy and cosmology citing paradigm shifts that have occurred since Ptolemy. He then proceeds to discuss various hypotheses about the origin of the universe including the popular Big Bang theory and its weaknesses. For example, there are no “proofs” for the Big Bang theory and advocates are constantly having to create Band-Aids to correct its faults. Finally, Dr. Farrell presents an alternative theory which uses the same data as the Big Bang theory but does not violate the laws of physics or require mysterious dark energy.

This presentation will challenge the dogma and offer a new insight for those curious about the universe and the world around us.

This was not easy because America was very isolationist. Come and hear about these two titans as they confronted the most difficult enemies their countries had ever dealt with. CLUB CONNECTIONS

ARMED FORCES SUPPORT GROUP

The Armed Forces Support Group began with the purpose of helping Veterans returning from Operation Iraqi Freedom. What started as a single item auction evolved into a golf tournament/raffle that has proudly donated over $850,000 to 501 C 3 foundations that support Veterans and their Families in their healing journey. From its humble beginning, through the leadership and perseverance of its founder Barry Curseaden, a non-veteran, the organization has grown to what it is today. As our non-veteran and veteran club membership continues to grow, we are searching for even more volunteers and ways to raise funds and awareness for military service members, past and present, who have given so much to our country.  Even if you have never served in the military, joining the Armed Forces support Group is your chance to show your support and gratitude to those who have sacrificed for our freedom.

GRAND FISHING CLUB SPECIAL PRESENTATION

When – Thursday, February 6th at I:00pm Where - Cimarron Center - Agua Fria Room Fishing with Wind River Canyon Whitewater & Fly Fishing

He can be reached at www.windrivercanyon.com and 307-8649343.

RESIDENT FISHING IN THE GRAND

n Fishing in The Grand is limited to Grand residents or their guests. Guests must be accompanied by a Grand resident while they fish.

n The Grand lakes are private and therefore a state fishing license is not required.

n Fishing is only permitted on the non-golf side of Lake Nine (near Angela’s restaurant, the tennis courts and the dog parks) and the Upper Lake (near the Adobe Center). The red line on the image below denotes shorelines where fishing is permitted. Fishing is not permitted at any of the other Grand lakes.

The lakes contain large-mouthed bass, sunfish/ bluegill, catfish, and carp. The lakes are stocked periodically with large-mouthed bass and sunfish/ bluegill.

n The Grand lakes are catch-and-release only to maintain an adequate fish stock for everyone’s enjoyment. Some tips to limit trauma to fish include:

• Use barbless hooks

• Use rubber nets

• Limit the time a fish is out of the water. Keep the fish wet.

• Carry hook removal devices. Pliers or hemostats work well.

• Limit fighting time while landing a fish.

• Do not drop or allow the fish to touch the ground.

n Only single, barbless hooks may be used while fishing. Children 10 years of age and under may fish using worms. All others must use artificial lures and are not permitted to use live bait.

n Share a passion for fishing, fun and the outdoors?

Visit the Grand Fishing Club’s website at scgfishing.weebly.com/for information about joining the Grand Fishing Club.

BOWLERO AVONDALE
WILDLIFE WORLD ZOO AQUARIUM & SAFARI PARK

Those of you who lived in The Grand when I was President during COVID-19 may recall that I wrote a bi-monthly e-blast called, "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." It was specifically intended to enhance transparency with facts and data, entertain and quell the many rumors that seem to pop up here. In my new capacity as your District 2 Councilmember, my goal will be to help maintain consistency in City messaging from all districts, so I won't be writing features in the same way I once did. However, the transparency that City of Surprise staff provides to all residents (through a multitude of digital and print vehicles), I find beneficial and highly effective. I hope you will find this official newsletter from me valuable each month!

I have been asked many times, what my agenda is as a City Councilmember. My answer is always the same –I did not come into this with a personal agenda. I came into this with my ears wide open, ready to listen to what the residents of District 2 have to say and then figure out how I might be able to help facilitate those needs.

Those who were here when I was on the board might also remember that my nickname was "Databoy." As the oldest member of the current City Council, I no longer feel like much of a “boy,” but that doesn't mean I will stop desiring City staff provide the most relevant data in order to ensure the best decision-making when the time comes!

I look forward to serving you all for the next 4 years. Thank you.

WHEN DISASTER STRIKES: PREPARE, ACT, SURVIVE COURSE

The City is hosting a course designed to equip individuals with the essential skills needed to respond to a disaster when emergency responders may not

be immediately available. In this free course, participants 18 and older will learn how to create a family preparedness plan, perform self-rescue, conduct basic search and light rescue operations, and understand the recovery process following an emergency. While the course does not certify individuals to serve as professional emergency responders, it provides vital knowledge and skills for managing immediate disaster impacts.

This two-day Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs training class will be held at the Surprise Regional Library, 16089 N. Bullard Ave.

• February 5 | 8 a.m.–5 p.m. (class will break for an hour at lunchtime)

• February 6 | 8 a.m.–12 p.m.

Registration is required at my.teex.org/ TeexPortal. If you have any questions or need any assistance with registering, contact 251.455.4353 or Laine.Spruill@teex.tamu.edu.
