GOLF AND FITNESS: ENHANCING YOUR GAME ON AND OFF THE COURSE
Brandon Dougherty, PGA Director of Golf
Golf, often regarded as a leisurely sport, requires more physical fitness and conditioning than meets the eye. From generating swing speed off the tee to maintaining focus on the green, every aspect of the game can be enhanced through proper fitness routines. Here's why integrating golf-specific fitness drills into your regimen can elevate your game to new heights.
IMPORTANCE OF FITNESS IN GOLF
Golf is a sport that demands precision, flexibility, strength, and endurance.
A well-rounded fitness routine tailored for golfers can improve:
1. Swing Speed and Distance: A stronger core and legs contribute to a more powerful swing, translating into longer drives.
2. Flexibility and Range of Motion: Enhanced flexibility allows for a smoother swing, reducing the risk of injury and improving accuracy.
3. Endurance and Focus: Golf rounds can be mentally taxing; physical fitness helps maintain concentration throughout the game.
GOLF-SPECIFIC FITNESS DRILLS
Incorporating targeted drills into your fitness routine can address these aspects effectively:
1. Core Strength for Stability
n Exercise: Plank variations (front, side, and reverse)
n Benefit: Improves stability during the swing, leading to more consistent shots.
2. Flexibility for Fluid Swing Motion
n Exercise: Dynamic stretches like leg swings and torso twists
n Benefit: Increases range of motion, allowing for a smoother and more controlled swing.
3. Leg Power for Distance
n Exercise: Squats, lunges, wall sits, and calf raises
n Benefit : Builds leg strength to generate more power in your drives.
4. Endurance for Consistency
n Exercise: Interval training (running or cycling)
n Benefit: Improves cardiovascular fitness, helping you stay focused over 18 holes.
To maximize the benefits of golf-specific fitness:
n Consistency is Key: Incorporate these exercises into your weekly routine to see improvement over time.
n Consult a Professional: Work with a Grand fitness trainer who understands golf mechanics to tailor exercises to your specific needs. Utilizing the Golf Forever training station at the Cimarron gym is a great introduction to golf-specific fitness. Please refer to the trainer list for more information.
n Recovery Matters: Balance workouts with rest to prevent overtraining and injury.

12 Unusual Ways to Shed Stress
Lessons from the World’s Blue Zones
By Johnaé De Felicis
The Power 9® principle of Downshifting is nothing new to centenarians in the blue zones –the longest-living people in the world with the highest life expectancy.
Designed to help you achieve a highquality, well-balanced life, these nine principles can also be major stress reducers.
Stress is one of the leading causes of chronic inflammation. It also has direct links to major age-related health issues, from dementia to Alzheimer’s disease. Unlike most of the modern world who prefer to shed stress at the gym or the mall, residents in the blue zones turn to traditional down-to-earth practices to recharge and renew energy.
Time and time again, centenarians manage to survive the leading killers of today: cancer and cardiovascular diseases. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends regular checkups, screenings, vaccinations, and the adoption of healthy lifestyle practices to avoid these underlying health issues. The latter is something that centenarians have mastered over time.
In an effort to dissect how centenarians make it past the age of 100, we have been studying the lifestyle habits of the longest-living, healthiest people in the world. Keep reading for a glimpse of daily downshift routines practiced by Okinawans, Adventists, Ikarians, Sardinians, and Nicoyans.
Okinawans
Okinawa is basically a Japanese Hawaii. Located a thousand miles away from Tokyo, this Pacific archipelago sits right on the exotic ground of the Ryukyu Islands. Okinawans are blessed with warmer climates year-round, allowing them to enjoy the island’s palm trees and sugarsand beaches as often as they’d like.
1Go outside and Get 15 Minutes of Sunlight
Residents are able to get plenty of sunshine year-round. This equips the body to naturally produce sufficient levels of vitamin D, leading to healthier and stronger bones. Senior Okinawans spend optimal amounts of time outside to soak up daily sunshine. In a 6-year study of 16,452 adults, researchers found that seasonal increases in sun time were associated with decreased emotional distress.
Okinawa’s claim to fame is being called “home” by some of the longest-living people in the world. Dubbed “the land of
immortals” by Chinese expeditions, these tiny islands have a reputation for extreme longevity. The people of Okinawa boast one of the highest life expectancy rates. Japanese people not only live longer, but they enjoy more disability-free years.
In Okinawa, they experience:
n Less than 1/2 the rate of dementia
n 1/5 the rate of prostate and breast cancer
n 1/5 the rate of cardiovascular disease
Okinawans take many preventative measures to dodge disease altogether. Over the years, past generations have survived Chinese and Japanese domination, fatal acts of God, and a devastating world war.
The fact that they’ve endured so many hardships contributes to their friendly, yet prideful attitude. Older Okinawans believe in letting the past be the past and focusing on the present. They’re very likable, laid back, and closely in touch with their spirituality. They also enjoy the company of their younger neighbors.

Get Together with Friends to Have Fun, Complain, and Lend Support
Okinawans in general are pretty sociable as well. Many residents in the area are a part of a moai, an Okinawan tradition. Moais are social support groups that provide residents with a sense of community. It’s their “village” that they see as a safe space to help them through stressful times. When members of a moai need financial or emotional assistance, the others are readily available to support them.
3 Take 10 Minutes to Pray, Meditate, or Reflect Every Day
Ancestors are treated with the highest regard, and the Okinawans go out of their way to maintain a close connection with them. Some take time each day to pay their respects.
4 Get Gardening
Okinawans also make exceptional gardeners. Nearly all centenarians in Okinawa have grown gardens of their own, or have picked up gardening as a hobby. Many of their morning routines start with tending to the fields and arriving home in the afternoons with fresh vegetables. Gardening requires a sufficient amount of physical activity, so it’s a great way to get daily movement while also shedding stress. Several studies point back to the stressrelieving effects of gardening, including this scientific study. It suggests that garden-related activities are an excellent distraction from worrying thoughts. Over the 12-week period of the study, participants also experienced a decline in depressive symptoms.
Okinawans also believe in daily consumption of ginger, turmeric, and other herbs to fight off illnesses. Thus, planting a medicinal garden can give you the best of both worlds between gardening and herbalism.
Adventists
Loma Linda is a treasured find in Southern California, located 60 miles east of Los Angeles. It’s known as America’s “longevity oasis.”
This American blue zone boasts a population of over 21,000 residents, mostly consisting of Seventh Day Adventists.
Adventists abstain from smoking, consuming alcohol and caffeine, and eating foods indicated as biblically unclean, from pork to shellfish. Their vegetarian diets may also significantly reduce their mortality rates, according to Adventist Health Study.
5 Pray, Meditate, or Reflect Every Day
In times of stress, Adventists turn to God. Prayer is their biggest stress-reliever. They also spend optimal amounts of time giving back to their communities. They take every opportunity to pay it forward with acts of service Helping others can take your mind off of stress, which is something that Adventists do religiously.
6 Boost Your Mood with Food
Their diet keeps them in great shape also–physically and mentally. Adventists follow a clean, vegetarian diet that mainly consists of fruits, vegetables, and legumes. They drink sufficient amounts of water as well.
Ikarians
Ikaria is famously known as the place where people forget to die. Located on the Eastern Aegean Sea, residents on the famous Greek Island enjoy exceptional longevity. One in three residents live past the age of 90, and making it to 100 comes as no surprise. One of their secrets to a long life? Well-managed stress.
Ikarians embrace mountain living, a big contributing factor to their lower stress levels. The longest-living centenarians on the islands were typically poor. As a result, they resorted to activities that got their minds off of life’s daily pressures.
Their favorite activities also double as stress-relievers, including:
n Gardening
n Exercise
n Yardwork
n Walks to their neighbors’ homes
7 Take a Nap
To Ikarians, naps aren’t solely reserved for little kids. The entire village goes dead during the afternoon nap time.
You may want to follow their lead and add naps to your daily routine, as individuals who nap regularly may have a lower risk of heart disease (according to this study).
In addition to giving your heart a break, it also further balances your stress hormones.
8 Schedule a Weekly Friend Date
Ikarians value social connections. They spend a lot of quality time with friends and family, experiencing greater long-term health as a result. In 148 separate studies, experts concluded that people who didn’t have close ties to their communities had a 50 percent chance of dying before their 7 ½ year follow-up, compared to individuals who didn’t have an active social life.
Sardinians
Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, located 120 miles from mainland Italy. In Sardinia lies the village of Arzana. From 2000 on, Arzana has had a reputation for housing the highest percentage of centenarians in Italy. The key to their vitality has a lot to do with their methods of stress management.
Sardinian origins date back well over 14,000 years, around the time of the last ice age. They’re known for having genetic distinctions compared to other

continued from previous page parts of Europe. Local populations possess unique cultural characteristics that are unlike the rest of the country. In most parts of the developed world, centenarian women outnumber men at a 4:1 ratio. The ratio is 1:1 on the island of Sardinia. Not surprisingly, it’s a place where the world’s longest-living men call home.
9
Don’t Take Life Too Seriously and Laugh Daily
Their way of downshifting to stress less is funnier than others. There’s no shortage of good laughs on the island, as most Sardinians are natural comedians. Residents love cracking jokes with their friends in the afternoons.
Taking life too seriously is the last thing they want to do. Thus, Sardinians maintain a good sense of humor. Laughter is both good for the soul and for lowering your stress levels. The act of laughing improves overall heart health and can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
10 Plan a Happy Hour
Happy hours are a daily occurrence for many Sardinians. For them, it’s normal to have an end-of-day glass of wine (or two) with friends. Cannonau wine happens to be their favorite. Not like other wines, it has 2-3x the level of arteryscrubbing flavonoids than the rest. Men who consume Cannonau wine in moderation may experience lower stress levels than men in other regions of the world.
Nicoyans
Nicoya is the Latin American blue zones region. The 80-mile peninsula sits right on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. With a relatively small population of 47,000 residents, Nicoyans tend to live past 100 years.
The roots of modern Nicoyans trace back to the indigenous Chorotega. Their ancestors’ traditions included leading stress-free lives.
11 Develop a Personal Purpose Statement
All Nicoyans have a plan de vida, or a reason to live. Centenarians who find success in this region have a strong sense of purpose. They find joy in contributing to the greater good and enjoy roles that make them feel useful. According to research, purpose-driven individuals are more likely to live longer than their peers.
Hard work keeps their focus off of stress and on things that are bigger than them. Nicoyans like to get their hands dirty, so physical work, chores, and activities are right up their alleys. Residents spend a lot of time outside as a result, allowing them to get plenty of vitamin D.
12 Make Friends with Someone Older or Younger Than You
At no surprise, their active lives are just as social. Centenarians in this blue zones region have well-built social networks. Frequent visits from their neighbors are normal.
Like centenarians in other blue zones regions, Nicoyans believe in putting family first. Most families remain in one household–even through adulthood. Parents, their children, and their parents typically live under one roof, allowing them to lean on each other and learn from each other in hard times.

We Want and Need You For C.H.A.P.S. Volunteer Service
We are looking for Grand men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. Call the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us! You may also find more information about C.H.A.P.S. STEPPING UP TO HANDLE A NEW VACATION WATCH RECORD
The volunteers of C.H.A.P.S. always take pride in serving the community by doing patrols in the early morning hours. This summer is like no other because of the record-high number of houses registered for Vacation Watch. At the end of June, close to 700 homeowners requested this service. By comparison, the number of Vacation Watch houses was around 300 in the years before the pandemic. This year, C.H.A.P.S. responded by adding Vacation Watch days and the members responded by filling the larger number of openings. Some members are doing three or four Vacation Watch outings in a month. In July, there were 12 Vacation Watch days and inspection teams went out 27 times to check houses where
residents are away for the summer. Teams meet at the C.H.A.P.S. office in the Palm Center at 6:30 a.m. and typically visit around 20 houses during a two-hour patrol. Initial inspections of houses newly registered for Vacation Watch require more time. Vacation Watch teams walk around every house to confirm that windows and doors are locked and look for other issues requiring a call to the keyholder, such as an irrigation leak or standing water. Unlocked windows and irrigation problems are the most frequent reasons we need to call a keyholder. Everyone at C.H.A.P.S. is pleased to help keep the community safe. Please contact a C.H.A.P.S. member or attend our monthly meeting if you want to join us.
C.H.A.P.S.
VACATION WATCH
Homeowners who will be away for at least two weeks can ask C.H.A.P.S. to visit their houses periodically to look for any irregularities. You can register your house by using a Vacation Watch Request Form that is available at the Palm Center Welcome Center and Membership Office or go online, www.livegrandaz.com, to complete the form. Return completed forms to the Membership Office. You must designate a keyholder to contact if a problem needs to be corrected while you are away. C.H.A.P.S. does not report homeowner violations to the Standards Office.
EVENING PATROL
Early in the evening, volunteers patrol neighborhoods in Association vehicles to observe and report unusual activity. Open garage doors and street light outages are the main objectives. Patrols are also on the lookout for any type of activity or situation that is not normal.

We welcome new members at any time of the year. After joining, you will receive lessons and field training. There are many patrol days each month for flexibility to use your free time. If you are interested, call the C.H.A.P.S. office (623) 546-7553, ask any C.H.A.P.S. member for information, or come to our next meeting, which is at 1:30pm at the Sonoran Plaza on Tuesday, August 27th.

SEPT. 1 • SUNDAY • GRAND TRIP CABARET AT PHOENIX THEATRE
Presented on the Mainstage at Phoenix Theatre, we scored smokin’ hot seats—front and center! Narrated by a mischievous Master of Ceremonies, Kander and Ebb’s Cabaret follows a struggling American writer finding inspiration from the pleasure-filled Kit Kat
Klub and its vivacious English singer. As a shadow falls over the city with the Third Reich rising to power, the Klub’s performers and patrons must decide if they’ll wake up to the evil on their doorsteps or keep escaping to the alluring fantasy world of the cabaret. Featuring classics like "Don't Tell Mama", "Maybe this Time", and the titular song, “Cabaret,” this dynamic masterpiece thinly veils a German city’s tragic trajectory. Prior to the show, we’ll visit Downtown Gilbert’s Heritage District, where we’ll enjoy lunch, on self. Tickets are available online at livegrandaz.com or in the Activities Office.

TRAIL OF THE ANCIENTS SCENIC BYWAY FEATURING MESA VERDE & CHACO CULTURE NATIONAL PARKS
The Trail of the Ancients is a modern-day drive that connects the migration routes of America’s first peoples—the Ancestral Puebloans—who occupied a vast region of the American Southwest for over 2,000 years. The only National Scenic Byway that was designated primarily for its archaeological sites, the trail passes through some of the southwest’s most protected places. With no particular right or wrong way to explore this multi-state trail—which the Federal Highway Administration says is 480 miles in total— we’ve planned a route that takes us through the
trail’s most iconic sites, including Mesa Verde and Chaco Culture National Parks. Tickets are available online at livegrandaz.com or in the Activities Office.

Hello! My name is Shannon. The travel bug bit me at age 6. I embarked on a road trip with my parents and grandmother, from North Dakota to California. Along the way my scrapbook began to unfold - The kitschy charm of Casa Bonita, the vastness of the Grand Canyon, sparkling lights of Las Vegas and the magic that is Disneyland. These were not just places, they were portals of wonder, igniting a spark that has never faded This journey is forever etched on my heart, instilling a lifelong love of exploration and lasting memories. These types of journeys brought me to the travel industry. My goal is to curate travels plans to delight your senses, create beautiful memories with your loved ones and see the world. Introducing the Grand Technology Roadmap
The Technology Advisory Committee (TAC) has been working on the Technology Roadmap since December 2022 and they released a final product to the Board on June 28th, 2024.
Clay Stephens, Chairman
Technology Advisory Committee (TAC)
Jeff Gibbs
Board Liaison to the Technology Advisory Committee (TAC)
In July and August, the Board will be processing the “Technology Roadmap” which provides details and guidance regarding the current and future technology profile at the Grand. This is going to be an important milestone in the history of our community.
INTRODUCTION
The Technology Roadmap is a document that articulates in detail how TAC perceives technology enabling or enhancing the resident and management experience of the Grand community in the next 3+ years. It is intended to align closely with our emerging Strategic Plan and the goals of the Board of Directors for the year ahead. It is intended to support the following technology vision:
Continuously deliver and evolve modern technology solutions that provide high value-added satisfaction for community residents and optimize business outcomes. This premiere portfolio of technology will be secure, user-friendly seamlessly integrated, easily upgraded and cost-effective, driving a high level of engagement and satisfaction across the community.
PURPOSE OF THE TECHNOLOGY ROADMAP
The Technology Roadmap is intended to provide guidance on the technological needs of The Grand, focusing on a number of inter-related areas. The findings and guidance in this Roadmap are based on a series of technology assessments completed during recent months as well as determined and targeted investigation and analysis by the TAC team to expose technology gaps that currently exist on the Grand campus.
OVERVIEW OF THE CONTENT OF THE ROADMAP
The Roadmap consists of six focus areas:
n Back Office Automation
n Infrastructure Modernization
n Audio Video
n CAM Operations – Roles, Responsibilities, Policies, and Processes
n Enhancing the Resident Experience
n Assessment of Emerging Technologies
Inside of these focus areas you will find several themes which are consistently emphasized and promoted to address technology gaps and needs. These themes are important and drive consistency in the guidance:
n Improved security of data and business continuity
n Leverage Cloud technology – this offers many advantages in terms of service, reliability, backup and redundancy, and security
n The potential advantages of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance our operations
n The implementation of a modern audio video network platform
n The establishment and deployment of a single, converged campus-wide network
n The benefits of service contracts to enhance services, support and maintenance
n The value of a strong focus on vendor management
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The Grand has a significant and important opportunity to drastically change and improve the technology landscape for our community. Although implementing these enhancements will necessarily involve certain cost elements, the TAC believes that there are significant benefits which can be realized as the community continues to grow and mature. Because our community’s technology has not been significantly improved over the years, much of the infrastructure is beyond its useful life and cannot be maintained. The recommendations in the Technology Roadmap address improvements necessary to support our vibrant community now and into the future.
In summary, the Technology Roadmap provides details on what
TAC recommends regarding these important challenges on the Grand campus today:
n Ensure the security of resident data and continuity of business operations
n Build a CAM staff capable of meeting todays IT challenges and promoting future growth potential
n Improve Network Infrastructure by replacing equipment and engage in a service contract
n Improve Audio Video by replacing equipment and engage in a service contract
n Improve back-office processes through vendor management with NorthStar
n Improving resident experience by making enhancement to the network infrastructure, audio video and NorthStar
Patriot Day is observed in the United States on September 11 to commemorate the lives of those who died in the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in York City and the Pentagon in Virginia and those who perished when the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania. The day also recognizes those who died attempting to rescue people trapped by the attacks.
By a joint resolution of the United States Congress on December 18, 2001, September 11 was designated as Patriot Day. The resolution calls for the President of the United States to issue a yearly proclamation requesting that all U.S. flags be flown at half-staff.
Further, Americans are asked to honor the dead with a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 AM, Eastern Standard Time, the time that the first airplane struck the World Trade Center, and to respect the ceremonies of remembrance when they are conducted. Prior to passage of the resolution, several other names had been proposed for the day, such as the National Day of Remembrance and the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance.
The volunteers of the Grand Flag Detail will host a ceremony of remembrance on September 11 at the Veterans Monument in the Village Center. There will be no seating for this somber ceremony out of respect and honor for those that perished on September 11, 2001, and the ceremony events.

The Billiards Club snowbirds will soon be heading North and towards other destinations, taking with them memories of a fun half-year of camaraderie, luncheons, League play and Championship competitions. They will be recalling the 2024 League winners ("Rack ‘Em Up", "Just Poolin’ Around", "Breaking Balls" 8-Ball, "Breaking Balls" 9 Ball, and “Grand's Billiards Club Travel Team". They'll remember Women's (Jan Clark), Players' (Bill Parker), and Masters (Randy Salzwedel) Champions' play. They'll dream about the Briesath Cup Champions Team "Breaking Bad" and how they might qualify to play in next year's tournament. They won't forget Linda Asleson's first place at the 19th Annual American Cue Sports, ACS, Arizona 8 Ball State Championships tournament or Randy Salzwedel's BCA Senior 8 Ball Singles – Platinum in Vegas. No doubt they will be practicing in their respective hometowns brushing up on skills, readying for their eventual return to The Grand.
In the meantime, The Billiards Club's fulltime residents will have months of air-conditioned enjoyment in our fabulously equipped Billiards Room. Spring and Summer activities will be in full swing which already started in April with a new Tuesday night Scotch Doubles League. BOOMERS CLUB
It's hot, hot, hot, and I'm not talking about the August weather in Surprise. It's hot in the Boomers club all year round!
The Grand Boomers are a fun-loving, young at heart, social club open to The Grand residents of any age. Our primary goal is to have a great time and meet other people living in our beautiful and active community. Our membership has a total of over 740 residents. More members, more ideas, more great people to hang out with. And because membership continues to grow, we are able to host a wide variety of events, planned and even unplanned get-togethers, without raising dues. It's nearly impossible to go to the Grand Cafe, to your favorite on- or off-site watering hole, even to the indoor walking track, and not meet a Boomer. There's so much to share you may become fast friends over a happy hour cocktail, a trip down the bowling alley, or a Corn Hole toss. Why the hesitation? You've already missed the summer dance, July's ladies luncheon, and our July off-site happy hour, you surely won't want to miss out on our August Ice Cream Social with Bunco (plenty of cash prizes and gift cards), or the famous Bowling and Pizza happy hour. You definitely don't want to miss the upcoming Corn Hole competition. Aren't you curious who will be the next Corn Hole champ? Why, it might be you.
Get on over to your preferred electronic device, put SCGBoomers.com in your browser, and sign up. Membership dues are only $10 per year. It's the best $10 you'll ever spend. See you at the Ice Cream Social—don't be a fool, be cool.

DRAMA & COMEDY CLUB
THE GRAND’S “COMMUNITY THEATER”
The Grand Drama & Comedy Club is the Grand’s Community Theater. We live our motto, “On Stage, Back Stage, A Place for Everyone” and welcome everyone to our club where everyone has a place. Everyone is not an actor, and many members use their talents in costuming, make-up, marketing, and communication. Do you like to redecorate? You might be a wonderful set designer. Are you a DIY kind of guy? Or gal? Join the construction crew building sets, or join a “painting party” to turn flats into garden scenes. Smile! Be an usher!
We are especially in need of CONSTRUCTION/ BUILDING volunteers. If you are handy with construction tools and enjoy creating, you are encouraged to join our construction crew. There is nothing like seeing your work turn a plain stage into a Victorian mansion or hunting lodge in the Ozarks. Join our team and enjoy creating our “places.”
Not interested in learning a lot of lines but always had a desire to be on stage? Our Cabaret Players present 3 comedy performances a year by actors who use their scripts as part of their performance – no memorization needed. Always a sell out, we perform in the Cimarron Theater.
and other parts of the world. The club sponsors single day fishing trips locally to Lake Pleasant, Deadhorse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, Bartlett Lake east of Cave Creek and the Salt River. Multiday trips include the White Mountains, Lees Ferry near Flagstaff, the San Juan River in New Mexico near Farmington, Alaska and Canada. In Grand, the club helps support the viability of Lake Nine adjacent to the 9th Hole on the Desert Springs Golf Course as a fishery for all Grand residents and their families. The Grand Fishing Club meets the first Tuesday of the month from October through April. Coupled with the various club fishing trips, members are also committed to making our community a much better place in which to live. Volunteer opportunities include Project Healing Waters in support of disabled veterans, the Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge program, the City of Surprise Adaptive Fishing program and the Phoenix VA Rehabilitation Hospital. In addition, we provide equipment and guidance to Grand residents to take their grandchildren fishing at Lake Nine. For more information, check out our website at www.scgfishing.weebly.com or to contact an administrative staff member please email infoscgfishing122@gmail.com.
RESIDENT FISHING IN THE GRAND
n Fishing in The Grand is limited to Grand residents or their guests. Guests must be accompanied by a Grand resident while they fish.
n The Grand lakes are private and therefore a state fishing license is not required.
n Fishing is only permitted on the non-golf side of Lake Nine (near Angela’s restaurant, the tennis courts and the dog parks) and the Upper Lake (near the Adobe Center). The red line on the image below denotes shorelines where fishing is permitted. Fishing is not permitted at any of the other Grand lakes.
The lakes contain large-mouthed bass, sunfish/ bluegill, catfish, and carp. The lakes are stocked periodically with large-mouthed bass and sunfish/ bluegill.
n The Grand lakes are catch-and-release only to maintain an adequate fish stock for everyone’s enjoyment. Some tips to limit trauma to fish include:
• Use barbless hooks
• Use rubber nets
• Limit the time a fish is out of the water. Keep the fish wet.
We offer so many opportunities to learn new skills and to develop one’s creativity, and all for only $10. For information on all the many ways to participate “on stage or back stage”, click the QR code on this page or visit our webpage: granddrama.com.

In all but the April and May months, two putting sessions are held – one at 9 a.m. and one at 11 a.m. In April and May, one putting session is held at 9 a.m.
Refreshments are served before putting begins; and prizes are awarded for holes-in-one, the lowest net team scores, and special putting events. You will putt with another team on an 18-hole putting course that is changed every month, so this is also an opportunity for you to meet new people. The fee for putting each month is $10 per team, and dues are $10 per team per
year. To see if you would be interested in joining, you may putt one time as a “guest” without paying the $10 fee for putting for that month. You can find additional information at scgcouplesputtingclub. golfgenius.com. Membership forms are available online or in the club information area outside the Activities Office.

Two concerts are performed each year: One is a Holiday concert in early December, and one in the Spring. Within the Grand Singers, there is a smaller chorus group called the Grand Chorale which is an auditioned group of about 32 singers. The Chorale performs additional songs at each of the Grand Singers' concerts. Kathy Head is the person to contact at (623) 836-2749 for more information.

Kathy has served as interim choir Director at her church in Portland, Oregon; she played keyboard for the church and was a piano player for Sunday School classes. She played in a Bell Choir and sang in a ladies’ ensemble. She hopes to have some instruments and soloists to make this delightfully successful. “We are a service group,” she says. “Our goal is to entertain.”
OPEN MIC
This new Grand Music Club monthly event allows club members to perform without auditioning first. Musicians, singers, and their accompanists take turns going up on a stage and playing a short set of songs. Open Mic at the Grand started on February 29, 2024, and is designed as an opportunity for musicians of all kinds to share a couple of songs in front of a kind, friendly audience. The one basic rule is that the performance must be live. There is no recorded music or backing tracks. Every Music Club Member is welcome. Experience doesn’t matter. It just takes showing up and being brave and having a good time. If you have questions, contact Craig Brandhorst at Cfbrand60@gmail.com or 623-238-1365.

SOCIAL GAMES:
Social Games Charter Club is comprised of 5 Special Interest Groups. These interest groups are as follows:
CHESS
Tucked away in The Grand, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, we play chess and forget about everything else. It’s true, while playing chess with us, you think only of chess, an inexpensive (no membership fees) and calorie-burning activity (yes, it’s true, you burn lots of calories playing chess).
You’ll need to know the basics as we won’t be spending too much time teaching, but we are welcoming and friendly to everyone, even if you aren’t Bobby Fischer! So, check us out, Mate. Just show up, with or without a board and pieces, and be ready for a rewarding escape. For dates and locations of play, call Marty at 203-979-1194, or Paula at 623-293-2884. Next move is yours. Let's play.
CRIBBAGE
If you have played Cribbage in the past and would like to join us, please come by on Tuesday morning 8:15 to 8:30 to sign in. Play begins at 8:45 in the Pima Room. Experience is necessary as this is a fastmoving game.
We play 9 games and rotate each game to play a different opponent. Each game is timed for 17 minutes. If you are not done in that time frame, whoever is ahead scores the points for that game. We collect $4 from each player, which is paid out as prize money at the end of the session. Prize payouts are based on the number in attendance. Should you get “skunked”, you pay a quarter for every skunk. Please do not bring large bills as we cannot make change. Should you decide, you would like to join, you may play twice before paying our dues.
If you would like to learn to play Cribbage, we suggest that you download the app and play at home to understand the basics and point counting as well as scoring of the game. We have no teaching tables available. For more info, email: jeward28@gmail. com
HAND & FOOT
We play every Tuesday at 1:00 and Friday at 6:00 in the Pima Room at Chaparral Center. PLEASE ARRIVE 15 MINUTES EARLY FOR TABLE ASSIGNMENTS. We play two games and draw cards for random partners each game. You will need $4. in quarters and $4 in bills for the two games. If you have your own cards (6 decks) and shuffler, please bring them. We are currently playing “Progressive Hand & Foot”. For a copy of the rules or questions, please contact Joy Kreick at joykreick@gmail.com
Come and play! We’re a friendly group and try our best to be inclusive no matter your skill level. RUMMIKUB
The RUMMIKUB (rummi-tile) Boardgame – is a FUN game for 2-5 people per table (pronounced Rummey-cube). Join us for this tabletop game with tiles that have easy to see “real numbers” divided into 4 different color suits.
Specific Play Dates
Thursdays: 8/1; 8/15; 9/5; 9/19; 10/3; 10/17
Saturdays: 8/10/ 8/24; 9/14; 9/28; 10/12; 10/26
How to play: You try to get rid of all your tiles by forming numbers into runs of 3 or more tiles; or sets of 3 to 4 of a kind. The colors of the numbers are like card suits divided into 4 colors.
It’s been a top worldwide boardgame for over 70 years. Players love it since it contains components of Canasta, Gin Rummy, Bridge and Mahjong. It gently stimulates the brain while combining both luck with strategic thinking.
Meetings: We meet from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the Pima Room near the Grand Café at Chaparral Center and play on the: 1st and 3rd Thursdays and 2nd and 4th Saturdays.
We’re a friendly group and play a friendly game peppered with laughs and FUN!
Call ahead for a FREE private lesson if you’re new, need a refresher, or are experienced! We will try to place you with players on your level. Come learn the new Joker Rules and new variant called RummiCrossover that has increased the fun!
You’re invited to join us no matter your skill level. For info: Barbara Powers 480-567-2533; Barbs.rum@ gmail.com.

LET'S RAISE MONEY FOR OUR CHARITY!
Everyone can participate! We raised $2,000.00 last year for the ronald McDonald House of Phoenix and we know we can do better this year! Please read and consider how you can participate and/or help!
We're only 160 days away from our 4th Annual Grand Slam Fall Charity Tennis Tournament. The dates are Nov 7-10, 2024. We will continue using the Fast4 Format with shorter sets since we will have round robin matches for women on Thursday, Nov 7th, men on Friday, Nov 8th, mixed doubles on Saturday, Nov 9th and all the finals will be on Sunday, Nov 10th. We will be adding a few additional levels of play. Both women, men and mixed will now have a 3.5/4.0 level. You may be playing in a 4.0 club play level, but really
feel you are a 3.5 so therefore you will play in that new 3.5/4.0 level. Or you could play a 3.5 player with a 4.0 player. All entries will be at the discretion of the tournament committee. If you are currently playing 4.0 USTA or playing 4.0 in a competitive capacity, such as West Valley League, you need to play in the 4.0 level. Please contact Sharon Villanueva with any questions.
We will be having our clothing resale event where all proceeds go to Ronald McDonald House. PLEASE keep all those sport clothes from any sport, and put them in the clothing drop box in the sports room. We will be collecting clothes, shoes, racquets, paddles, clubs, etc. from now until Nov.6th. Please let all your friends know about our clothing resale event. Last year we made $600 on this clothing resale. Let's shoot for $800 this year!
If you want to play, WE WILL FIND YOU A PARTNER!! We know all levels of women and men that want to play in this tourney but since it can only be 2 residents from Grand or 1 resident and 1 outside guest, there are a lot of people that want to play in it since it is such a fun tournament. We will be offering an incentive if you have an outside player as your partner. The more outsiders we can bring into the tournament, the more awareness we can bring to our Ronald McDonald Charity.
We will have raffle baskets as well so if you have anything you would like to donate or if you would like to make your own basket we welcome all donations! All proceeds go to Ronald McDonald House of Phoenix. Contact Sharon V at 303-946-8915. We will be having our next Tournament Committee meeting on Thursday, Sept. 12th at 5pm in the Sports Room, following the board meeting at 4pm. If you are interested in being on this committee, please attend the meeting or contact Sharon Villanueva at 303-946-8915. Check the club website for upcoming events. Description: The SCG LGBTQ Interest Group invites residents to join us for a variety of social activities including dining out, theater, concerts, sporting events, etc. We are about making new friends, socializing and supporting one another. Residents and allies who are looking to connect with other like-minded members of our community are welcome to join.
Grand’s LGBTQ Interest Group Update… Since we are in the middle of our Annual Membership Drive, it seems fitting to share a Group
update with the Grand community. When we last wrote in The Grand LIFESTYLES, we were amid the Covid epidemic and like so many other groups, we struggled to remain connected but did so thanks to the wonders of Zoom. Also, like so many other clubs and organizations have since experienced, it’s been a challenge to regroup and simply “pick up where we left off”.
Ever since our inception 8 years ago this March, The Grand’s LGBTQ Interest Group’s purpose remains unchanged. Our intent was to “Create community and enhance the quality of life for our members and allies who are residents of Sun City Grand, together with our LGBTQ neighbors, seeking to be a positive presence in our region and throughout the State of Arizona”. Our Core Values are Community, Friendship, Equality, and Inclusion. A recent member survey revealed that the opportunity to meet like-minded people in a social setting is indeed achieved. We continue our numerous social activities on a regular basis; monthly Breakfast Club, potlucks, “Shout-Outs” (spontaneously organized activities), and occasional outings. Ongoingly, we’ve contributed to and participated in various community efforts; volunteering at both local Food Banks, Surprise’s MLK Day events, Dysart School System, One-in-Ten Youth Advocacy Program, etc. As in any citizen group, members also participate in various local faith-based organizations, community programs and committees, and arts organizations. We also support and remain connected with our neighboring West Valley LGBTQ Clubs and Groups as well.
We look forward to welcoming new friends in our shared community. So, if our Group sounds interesting to you, and you would like more information, find us on social media at www. facebook.com/scglgbt ; feel free to contact us on email at scg.lgbt@yahoo.com or through our website at: scglgbt.com .

GRAND REPUBLICAN INTEREST GROUP
Grand Republicans meets the third Saturday morning each month at Church on the Green (19051 N. RH Johnson Blvd, Sun City West 85375.) Doors open
at 8:30, coffee and pastries available by 9:00, with meetings starting at 9:30. Guests are always welcome. Our June 15 meeting saw many candidates taking the opportunity to speak to us before the mailin ballots arrived in early July. First was Debbie Lesko, U.S. House of Representatives from CD 8, seeking to transition to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors. Next, Christopher Escobedo, State Director for the Trump Campaign, spoke of the exciting ground game that the Trump Campaign is putting together in Arizona. He introduced Ms Jenna Rayne as the West Valley Field Director. We then heard from: County Attorney Rachel Mitchell, who is seeking reelection; Rene Lopez, AZ Corporation Commissioner; Two candidates for Maricopa County Superintendent of Schools: Shelli Boggs and Nickie Kelley; Incumbent Maricopa County Treasurer, John Allen, also seeking reelection; and Two candidates for Mayor of Surprise: current District 2 Council Member, Alyson Cline, and recent write-in candidate Mr. Ed Cunningham. They will both be running against Kevin Sartor, who spoke to us earlier in the year.
At press time we were looking forward to our July 20 meeting featuring nationally recognized polling expert Mike Noble, founder & CEO of Noble Predictive Insights, a nonpartisan public opinion polling, market research, and data analytics firm in Phoenix; and Justin Heap, Arizona State Representative, and candidate for Maricopa County Recorder. Our August 17 meeting will feature author, historian and retired professor of history Dr. Larry Schweikart. His many books include The Entrepreneurial Adventure, a history of American business (1999,) A Patriot's History of the United States (2006,) coauthored with Michael Allen and (also in 2006,) 48 Liberal Lies About American History. Also speaking to us will be internationally renowned border intelligence expert and keynote speaker, Mr. Jaeson Jones.
We believe that an informed electorate is a voting electorate: The more informed people are, the more likely they are to vote. We therefore invite candidates and election specialists to speak at our meetings. Open-minded guests are always welcome to attend. As you sign in, whether Member or Guest, watch for the friendly, inviting (voluntary) Donation Jar in lieu of the $2 fee for non-members. Donations help defray the cost of the meeting room and are greatly appreciated. There is a separate tip jar near the free pastries and coffee.

Monsoon season is observed typically from June 15 through September 30 and is characterized by an increase in thunderstorm and lightning activity, high winds, dust storms and flash floods. While the severity of weather can vary each season, Surprise residents should have a monsoon safety plan and be ready for all possible weather-related occurrences.
Here are some tips and resources to help you and your family prepare for the upcoming Monsoon season:
At home: Staying indoors is the safest plan during a significant storm. If you are at home, turn off all unnecessary power equipment to prevent damage from power surges or outages. Ensure your home has an emergency preparedness kit that includes flashlights, batteries, bottled water, non-perishable food items and first aid supplies.
While driving: Dust storms and heavy rain can decrease visibility and increase road hazards when driving.
Tuesday, August 20, at 10 a.m. at The Grand, Agua Fria Room, 17100 W Clearview Blvd.
Friday, August 23, at 10 a.m. at Arizona Traditions Ballroom, 17221 N. Citrus Rd.
See you there!
Slow down if you are driving during a storm, and if necessary, pull off to the right side of the road as far as possible. Then turn off your engine and lights and take your foot off the brake pedal. Never attempt to drive through flooded intersections or roadways! Even shallow flowing water has enough power to sweep a vehicle off the road or stall an engine. If you approach a flooded area, safely turn your vehicle around and find an alternate route. Flash floods: Monitor weather reports and pay attention to flood alerts. Knowing where to find sand and sandbags is essential to protecting your home and family when flooding is imminent. Sand and bags are provided free of charge to Surprise residents at multiple locations. Get the locations and other monsoon safety tips at surpriseaz.gov/monsoon.

Explore the world’s music and cultures at the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM). MIM takes you on a journey around the world, deep into the heart of human creativity.
MIM’s five Geographic Galleries showcase global music and cultures through multimedia that allows you to hear, see, and feel the creative spirit of people as they play their instruments. In the Experience Gallery, bang a gong, strum a Peruvian harp, try your hand at the theremin, and have fun making some music on global instruments similar to ones on display throughout the museum. Today, MIM has a collection of more than 7,500 instruments from more than 200 world countries and territories. The galleries reflect the rich diversity and history of many world cultures. But music and instruments also show us what we have in common—a thought powerfully expressed in our motto, music is the language of the soul. Visit the Artist Gallery to get a
close-up look at instruments and memorabilia from influential artists, such as Elvis Presley®, Ravi Shankar, Carlos Santana, Clara Rockmore, Johnny Cash, Maroon 5, and more.
