FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

They’re Back….. Mosquito Concerns in the Valley

Kenneth Olson, CMCA, AMS General Manager

As a former resident of Minnesota where the mosquito was laughingly referred to as the state bird, I can assure you that the larger mosquito population this year is not received well in our household! Yes, the mosquitoes are attacking us all over the valley and their increased presence is not only felt but a topic of conversation by many residents. The mosquito carries many viruses that make birds, animals and humans ill and sometimes with fatal consequences. One of the major concerns in our area is West Nile virus which has been prevalent in Arizona since 2003 and has been present in Africa, West and Central Asia and the Middle East for many years. According to the Arizona Department of Health Services and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) it is important to understand the transmission, signs and symptoms, prevention and treatment of the West Nile virus in order to reduce the possibility of becoming infected from mosquitoes.

Transmission

West Nile virus typically circulates between Culex sp. mosquitoes and birds. The mosquito feeds on an infected bird and acquires the virus and in about a week the mosquito can then pass the virus onto to other birds during feeding. Mosquitoes can also transmit West Nile to humans and other mammals, such as horses. Humans and horses are considered ‘dead end’ hosts, since they cannot pass the virus on to other mosquitoes.

Signs and Symptoms

Most people (8 out of 10) infected with West Nile virus do not develop any symptoms. About 1 in 5 people who are infected develop a fever with other symptoms such as headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. Most people with this type of West Nile virus disease recover completely, but fatigue and weakness can last for weeks or months. About 1 in 150 people who are infected develop a severe illness affecting the central nervous system such as encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord). Signs of more serious disease can include high fever, headache, confusion, disorientation, seizures, and coma. If you believe you may be infected with West Nile virus, please contact your healthcare provider. People over 60 years of age are at greater risk. People with certain medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, and people who have received organ transplants, are also at greater risk.

Treatment

No vaccine or specific antiviral treatments for West Nile virus infection are available. Over-the-counter pain relievers can be used to reduce

fever and relieve some symptoms. In severe cases, patients often need to be hospitalized to receive supportive treatment, such as intravenous fluids, pain medication, and nursing care. If you think you or a family member might have West Nile virus disease, talk with your health care provider.

Prevention Eliminating the mosquito and its breeding capabilities will go a long way in preventing bites in the first place. Mosquito larvae grow in water and even if the water source dries out for many months, once water is present, the eggs can hatch and create a whole new batch of mosquitoes. An effective means of controlling mosquitoes is to remove standing water where they could lay eggs; even a teaspoon of water is large enough to hatch more mosquitoes. Empty and scrub any items that could hold water outside like buckets, flowerpot saucers, planters and trash containers. Cover any item that stores water so mosquitoes cannot get inside to lay eggs. Larvicides (pellets) can be used to treat open water that is still and difficult to cover. Mosquitoes can be killed outside where they rest using insecticide sprays and products readily available at local hardware and home improvement stores. Mosquitoes rest in dark, humid areas like under patio furniture or in

bushes. When using insecticides, always follow label instructions. Citronella candles and an array of devices are sold that kill or repel mosquitoes and are effective for use in back yards and patios.

Mosquito-Borne Diseases in Maricopa County 2019

Keep mosquitoes out of the house by repairing or installing window and door screens. Leaving windows or doors open invites mosquitoes into the house. If mosquitoes get into the house they typically rest in dark, humid places like under the sink, in closets, under furniture or in the laundry room. If insecticide is used in the house to kill mosquitoes, always follow label instructions. For more information please refer to the references that contributed to this article: 1. Arizona Depart of Health Services (ADHS) – Go to azdhs.gov and type MosquitoBorne Diseases in the search box to view additional resources. 2. Center for Disease Control (CDC) – Go to cdc.gov/westnile to view information on West Nile Virus by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Disease Statistic Notes * To date, Maricopa County has only experienced travel-related cases of chikungunya, dengue and Zika, meaning that residents brought the disease in from other places or passed on the disease during birth as the result of infection acquired during travel. † Unspecified Flavivirus indicates an infection that could not be attributed to a single mosquitoborne disease.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS

AERIFICATION:

SOMETIMES IT’S GOOD TO VENT Presented by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America

aerification is best done in many parts of the country during mid-summer, at the height of the playing season and when most greens are in prime condition. Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations

It’s a perfect, sunny morning and you’ve just reached the first green in regulation. You feel great and you know you’re within birdie range. Then, you see them, those little holes in the green. Arrggh! They’ve just aerified the course, and it’s going to ruin your round, right? Well, maybe not. Consider the fact that PGA TOUR legend Tom Watson shot a sizzling record 58 at his then-home course, Kansas City Country Club, just days after the greens had been aerified. Consider also that aerification is merely a short-term disruption that has long-term benefits for the course. When you see them, remember that without those little holes, the greens would eventually die. Preventative maintenance is an integral part of successful golf course management. Golfers view aerification as an inconvenience that takes the greens out of play for a day, pulling cores from the greens and leaving holes that can affect putting for many days before healing. To add insult to injury,

10

But a golfer needs to understand how important aerification is to producing healthy turf. Aerification achieves three important objectives. It relieves soil compaction, it provides a method to improve the soil mixture around the highest part of a green’s roots and it reduces or prevents the accumulation of excess thatch. Like so many things, the quality of a good putting green is more than skin deep. In fact, the condition of a green has a lot to do with what goes on below the surface. In order for grass to grow at 3/16-inch, it must have deep, healthy roots. Good roots demand oxygen. In good soil, they get the oxygen from tiny pockets of air trapped between soil and sand particles. Over time, the traffic from golfers’ feet (as well as mowing equipment) tends to compact the soil under the putting green – particularly when the soil contains a lot of clay. When soil becomes compacted, the air pockets on which the roots depend are crushed, and the roots are essentially left gasping for air. Without oxygen, the grass plants become weaker and will eventually wither and die. Aerification is a mechanical process that creates more air space in the soil and

promotes deeper rooting, thus helping the grass plants stay healthy. In most cases, it’s done by removing ½-inch cores (those plugs you sometimes see near a green or in fairways) from the compacted soil, allowing for an infusion of air and water that brings a resurgence of growth. The spaces are then filled with sand “topdressing” that helps the soil retain air space and makes it easier for roots to grow downward. Older greens often are constructed of soils with significant amounts of silt, clay and fine organic particles that are prone to compaction. Filling aerification holes with sand improves drainage and resists compaction. The periodic introduction of sand to a green’s top layer can over time, avoid or postpone expensive rebuilding or renovation of greens. Finally, growing of turf adds to a layer of organic matter on the surface. This layer, called thatch, is an accumulation of dead stems, leaves and roots. A little organic matters makes for a resilient green, but too much invites diseases and insects. Topdressing with sand can prevent thatch buildup, and aerification is one of the best ways to reduce an existing layer and prevent an excess of thatch from becoming established. Other aerification techniques use machines with “tines” or knives that simply poke holes through the soil profile. A new technique even uses ultra highpressure water that’s injected through the soil profile to create small holes that relieve some compaction but heal quickly. There are many types of aerifying machines with different attachments that address different problems in the various stages of the life of a green. So the next time you’re ready to scream when the aerifiers are brought on the course, remember that a little preventative maintenance produces the best greens over the long haul. The bottom line is that aerification is a necessary practice. But before you curse the superintendent for ruining your day, just think of Tom Watson.

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER

STRETCHING BASICS Allison Adams Fitness Manager

Stretching is a popular conversation around Sun City Grand (SCG). As a Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor at SCG, I regularly get many questions about it. For example, “When should I stretch?,” “What are the best stretches to do?,” “What kind of stretching is better, static or dynamic?,” “When do I breathe or do I hold my breath when I hold position?,” “What are the Benefits of Stretching?,” and “Should I stretch an injured body part?”

Below are some answers to your Stretching questions You can stretch anytime of the day. Morning and evening Stretching has different benefits for your body. The most important thing is to STRETCH about 10 minutes everyday. When you stretch in the morning it’s kind of a wake up call to your body. It can have similar effects to your body as having your first cup of caffeine. When you stretch in the evening you can improve your quality of sleep. When you are winding down from your day, your mind is less cluttered with data. Stretching helps you to relax and focus on your body parts that have worked hard during daytime. The best Stretches to do utilize your major muscle groups. Concentrate your Stretching time on your Neck, Shoulders, Back, Hips, Thighs and Calves. If you have specific areas where your body is tight, then focus extra time and attention on those parts too. There are different types of Stretches. Static and Dynamic are two popular types for most people. Static–holding the position for 30 seconds and repeating it 2 or 3 times. This type can be good for after your workout. Dynamic–Warms up your muscles and lubricates your joints. This type can be good to do before your workout. When Stretching Breathing is important. Please don’t hold your breath. Sometimes, when you are holding a 14

position, you can feel the muscles begin to release. You can exhale and gently, slowly push the Stretch a little further to increase your Range of Motion.

STRETCHING BENEFITS Increase Your Flexibility Flexible muscles can improve your daily performance. Functional living tasks, such as lifting items, bending over to tie your shoes or reaching an upper cabinet. As we age, flexibility tends to diminish. However, you can regain and maintain it with consistent practice. Increase Your Range of Motion Maintaining a full Range of Motion through your muscles and joints keeps you in better balance and reduces your chance of falling and injury. The more Range of Motion you have in your body parts the better your performance you will have in fitness and functional movements. Increase Your Blood Flow to Your Muscles Your blood is constantly moving in your body. It brings proper nourishment and also removes waste in your muscle tissue. Improving your blood circulation can shorten your recovery time, if you have a muscle injury. Improves Your Posture By consistently Stretching your muscles on a daily basis you can prevent them from getting too tight. You can reduce the discomfort, aches and pain at a minimum. Regular Stretching may help reduce your back pain.

Reduces Your Stress Relief Your BREATH, is totally under-rated. When you think about it, The ‘Breath’ is one of the most important things we own. The more you are present and mindful you are; the quicker you will listen to your body sending you warning messages. Most people don’t recognize their body’s messages until it is a RED Flag and their body is screaming PAIN. For example, when you really feel pain in your neck, lower back or other places. When you have a regular practice of Stretching, you can actually feel the Stretch and the benefits; increasing your mindfulness. This will also Calm your Mind.

SAFETY TIPS FOR YOUR STRETCHING 1. Don’t Bounce. Years ago, Ballistic Stretching (bouncing) was considered the best way to increase your flexibility. Now, the experts (American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons) suggest you avoid bouncing. If your an athlete and working with a professional this type of stretching can push your range of motion with extra force. 2. Don’t Stretch past feelings of discomfort. In my Personal Training and when I teach Fitness classes, I share a way to explain what this means. Imagine a Fence and on one side of it is ‘Discomfort’ and on the other side ‘Pain’. Stay on the Discomfort side of the Fence, back away from the ‘Pain’. 3. Don’t overdo Stretching. If you stretch the same muscle groups multiple times a day, you risk over-stretching and could cause damage. 4. Don’t Stretch if you have Muscle Strains, Fractured Bones and Joint Sprains. When your body is injured it needs time to heal. Stretching around an injured area could cause further injuries. Check with your Physician or Physical Therapist. Granite Falls (Coco’s) And Cimarron Remodel Both Kicking Off This Summer The Large Scale Project Committee is currently working on Scope of Work for both projects so RFPs can be developed. Several contractors have visited the site and given us a wealth of helpful input that will help guide the Request for Proposal (RFP) process. They also have confirmed that our budgeting numbers are in the correct range for this project. This initial consultation comes at no cost to our association. There are already ample funds set aside in CARE to do these two projects without interfering with other CARE projects, plus there are sizable Reserve Funds for both projects.

International RFP is completed in six to nine months. This is a very complex set of decisions with one impinging on the other and deadlines looming (Coco’s lease) that keep driving the process forward, even in the face of “yet to be determined” factors.

Watch for more information as we move towards the RFP in the fall.

The same contractors are looking at both projects, as they will likely be done one after the other – Granite Falls in early 2021, followed by Cimarron, the summer of 2021 or possibly 2022. The contractors we are working with are all experienced contractors with Food & Beverage (F&B) experience, however, in the case of Cimarron but it is very important that we know the restaurant outcome before that Scope and RFP can be fully realized. How the F&B in Grand is to be managed will not be determined until the Fessel

I scratch my head, but that doesn’t give me the answers to my many questions. All I find is dandruff on my shoulder where my angel perches. She’s always there correcting my poor grammar and atrocious speling, but she urges me on, so now somehow I’m finishing my ninth novel. I’m still waiting to be contacted by the Pulitzer Committee, but my angel just smiles, knowing that will never happen. I’m really a storyteller, probably an adjunct to my misspent youth. One of my books is an anthology which contains 51 separate observations on Rworld from an old codger like me. All 51 observations are profound, as you will see while I share one about animals with you.

ANIMALS

Have you noticed that as we learn more about the life cycles of animals in Rworld, the more we are amazed and surprised by their abilities. We now think that each animal communicates with its species in their own distinctive way. Beavers slap their big wide tail on the water to warn of danger. It can be heard great distances as well as in the water below. Bees tell other bees the way to good flowers by varying the frequency of their wings. Now, that’s amazing! The other day I was observing an ants’ nest. The busy ants were coming to and going from their tasks, not once stopping to chat. I don’t even think they said “hi,” and they seemed very dedicated to their work. I wonder if there’s a union for worker ants. I’ve never seen them on strike. And I wonder, do you think they are jealous of their queen who just lies about with nothing more to do than make baby ants? Say, how do ants communicate, anyway? Then I got to thinking about man’s best friend, the dog. Do you think a rich man’s dog in a fine house is happier than a poor man’s dog in his house? I talk to my dog all the time, it’s good therapy, you know. So far my dog is keeping what he knows to himself, but I suspect wealth matters little to him. I know he loves to go in the family car. He doesn’t want to be left behind and alone. He and all of us want to be part of a group. Humans form social groups, whales form pods, wolves form packs, and bison move around in herds. It’s good to belong. Will you join me for coffee? I told you it was profound. Some may find these observations educational. Also, most of my books are in the SCG Library in the Large Print Section. My eyesight is poor, so I write big.

Summer Recess June 25, 2019 ATTENDANCE

67 enthusiastic members HOSTED BY

Coordination between Golf, Activities, Fitness, and Housekeeping LOCATION

Sagebrush ballroom and Mesquite room Fitness had been stewing on the idea to host a Summer Recess event for some time. Intended to promote indoor physical activity during the heat of the summer, we engaged in several games that many would remember from field day on school playgrounds, combined with intermittent exercise bouts and minute-to-win-it games. Feedback from surveys provided welcomed ideas to make next year’s event even better. Thanks to all who participated!

Kitt Peak National Observatory & Biosphere 2 DAY ONE

Late October is the perfect time to head to Tucson, one of the most vibrant and diverse cities in the American Southwest. We’ll stop first for coffee & goodies on our way to explore Mission San Xavier del Bac. A National Historic Landmark, “The White Dove of the Desert” was founded as a Catholic mission by Father Eusebio Kino in 1692, making it the oldest intact European structure in Arizona. The church’s interior is filled with incredible statuary and mural paintings, allowing visitors to experience an 18th Century space. Afterwards we’ll head to Casino Del Sol—our headquarters for the night—a five-time recipient of a AAA Four-Diamond rating, and TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence. We’ll take some time to check into our rooms, and after a refresh, we’ll head out to enjoy lunch on self, with several lovely restaurants to choose from, including Festa International Buffet, offering live-action cooking stations, serving Asian wok stirfry and sushi, delicious Italian pastas and pizzas, a roast carving station, huge salad bar, an amazing spread of desserts and so much more. Late afternoon we’ll gather again to head for Kitt Peak National Observatory to enjoy their famous Nightly Observing Program, an opportunity to learn about astronomy and viewing the night sky. We’ll discover how to view hidden objects in the sky with binoculars and view the deep sky objects with telescopes. It is a remarkable evening experience and it includes a light sandwich dinner.

DAY TWO

Breakfast is on self at the hotel, with a few food outlets to choose from. Later it’s back on the bus, and we’ll head for Biosphere 2, the world’s largest earth science laboratory, named one of the 50 must-see wonders of the world. Biosphere 2 serves as a center for research, outreach, teaching and life-long learning about Earth, its living systems, and its place in the universe. Biosphere 2 derives from the idea that it is modeled on Earth, the first biosphere. This 3.14-acre facility offers the most remarkable tour, with 7,200,000 cubic feet under sealed glass; housing biomes that include: ocean with coral reef, mangrove wetlands, tropical rainforest, Savanna grassland, and fog desert. Our private tour involves moderate walking and stair climbing. Afterwards we’ll enjoy a picnicstyle lunch on the lovely grounds of the facility, included. This two-day tour into the Tucson region to explore Kitt Peak and Biosphere 2 is going to be incredible—we hope that you will join us!

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE

Wedding Day Memories

CELEBRATED AT THE COLONNADE There are few memories more precious than those of your wedding. Photos, videos and keepsakes like wedding dresses help remind us of that precious moment in time.

Dick celebrated his birthday in June by presenting Toni with an engagement ring. They were married two months later on Aug. 26, 1961.

To honor and remember those moments, The Colonnade held its first ever Wedding Day Celebration for residents on June 26.

“We had a nice, traditional wedding in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Warren, Ohio with attendants, flowers, photographer, a luncheon for the wedding party and outof-town guests and a larger formal evening reception,” says Toni. “I believe the entire wedding cost less than $1,500.”

Inspiration for the event came to The Colonnade Life Enrichment Director Paula Sikes several months ago after she talked to a resident who had recently organized her closet and came across her wedding dress; one she wore 60 years ago. “I thought it would be great to plan a big wedding reception to celebrate all the wedding anniversaries,” says Paula. “The event would include everyone, either married or widowed – no matter what month they were married.” Residents celebrated their special days with music, dancing, a champagne toast and of course, cake! To make the party even more special, 55 residents shared photos of their wedding day and 10 ladies displayed their wedding dresses. Two of those women were Toni Jaskowick, a resident since May 2016, and Catherine Hockstad, a resident since March 2016. Toni and her husband Dick met while attending Kent State University in Ohio, where she majored in journalism and he in business. After finishing their junior year,

Her dress was a short-sleeved, tiered white eyelet in a southern belle style. She wore elbow-length gloves; the same gloves her mother wore for her wedding in 1932. Although Toni’s beloved uncle passed away several months prior to the wedding in a trucking accident, he still found a way to make his presence known. “My uncle, who was a driver with Rodeway, had the reputation for doing silly things at family weddings and promised me that he was saving the best for me,” says Toni. “As Dick and I stood outside the church greeting guests after the ceremony, a Rodeway truck stopped on the street behind us,” Toni recalls. “The driver then leaned over, rolled down his window and yelled ‘congratulations!’ Catherine Hokstad also displayed the wedding dress she wore 61 years ago. She and her husband Ray were married on June 21 in the Mayflower Congregational Church in Detroit, prior to his senior year

of college. Ray was studying to be a family practice physician, and Catherine had a degree in education/special education. Catherine and her mother picked out her dress at Hudson’s department store. It was a short-sleeved dress with a full skirt and crinoline underneath. She wore gloves up to the elbow and had a crown with a net for her veil. They had 7:30 p.m. ceremony with a reception following in the church. Immediately after the reception the couple drove as far as Flint, Mich. where they had a room reserved in a new hotel, with a bottle of celebratory champagne. The honeymoon was memorable for another reason as well. “My mother-in-law called us on our honeymoon night, saying she had locked her keys in her car, and she needed Ray’s help in getting an extra set of keys,” says Catherine. “We were awakened again by her at 6:30 the next morning, telling us she had found her keys after all. I never let her forget that!” Many similar reflections and memories were shared and enjoyed by the 125 residents who attended the special celebration. “The wedding dresses, the stories and wedding cake with champagne toast were wonderful,” says Marietta Bittrich Johns. Vicki Dillon agrees. “Seeing the wedding dresses and all the wedding photos brought tears to my eyes,” she says. “I felt so much love surrounding me.”

AUGUST RAINS BRING

MOSQUITO SEASON

eliminate all standing water in decorative pots, planters, pet dishes, etc. Standing water is where mosquito larvae breeds more mosquitoes. Turned off water features are especially problematic. Use of chlorinated tablets is advised if water is not completely drained out. Eliminating standing water after monsoon rains will help keep you and your SCG neighbors mosquito-free.

Going away in August? Arizona’s wettest month is now upon us, but rain won’t be the only thing that arrives with these August monsoon storms. Standing rainwater provides optimum breeding conditions for mosquitoes, which have the potential to cause serious illnesses, including the West Nile virus. The Environmental Services of Maricopa County

is reporting the mosquito count for 2019 is slightly higher than 2018, especially on the west side of the county. People can become infected with West Nile virus through a single mosquito bite. Though the disease can infect anyone, senior citizens can be most at risk. The effects of fatigue and weakness can last for weeks.

WEEDS Friendly Reminder from Standards We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

Sun City Grand homeowners can “fight the bite” of mosquitoes by cleaning up their yards right after a rainstorm comes through their property. Residents should check their house perimeter and

If you are away for two weeks or more CHAPS offers you Vacation Watch for your home. Complete and return a Vacation Watch request form to the Membership Office at the Palm Center and CHAPS volunteers will inspect the outside of your home for security issues while you are gone. We are homeowners helping fellow homeowners. YOU’LL ALWAYS BE TREATED LIKE FAMILY... AND WE LIKE OUR FAMILY!

Wave at n! h o J d n Karen a LIVING AT ROYAL OAKS KEEPS THEM ON-THE-GO TO EXPLORE PLACES NEAR AND FAR. WHAT IS ROYAL OAKS? A community with multiple dining options, lots of friends, and activities too numerous to list. And without the maintenance of your current home so you are free to fly away! We invite you to visit and ask Royal Oaks residents why they live here. If you’d like, we’ll arrange a lunch or dinner after the tour with some residents who, like you, didn’t believe that life could be so easy at Royal Oaks. We’ll help you narrow down your choices between our 23 floor plans (homes and apartments in independent living) on our 50+ acre campus and also show you the social, dining, activity, and care spaces.

And the list of exotic locals our residents are exploring. When you visit, ask about Club Connect, where you can experience life at our community prior to residency. But first, find out the benefits of lifeplan communities by downloading many informational pieces on our website (click on the “free download” button on the home page). DVD—DRAWING GESTURE IN CHARCOAL AND PASTEL A reference photo of a dancer allows Craig Nelson to emphasize gesture in a charcoal drawing and capture an exciting pose not possible with a live model. In this DVD workshop, Craig eases into the drawing by translating lines from his photo to his paper. He concentrates on angles and uses an imaginary grid and plumb lines to render a ghost drawing of his subject. Craig adds facial features and shadows early in the process but plans for later changes. Craig offers tips for effective shading. He demonstrates multiple strokes, rubs in subtle gradients and contrasts deliberate variation in the hair with diffused uniformity in the background reflection. MISS SAIGON AT ASU GAMMAGE Miss Saigon is a musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, with lyrics by Boublil and Richard Maltby, Jr. It is based on Giacomo Puccini's opera Madame Butterfly, and similarly tells the tragic tale of a doomed romance involving an Asian woman abandoned by her American lover. The setting of the plot is relocated to 1970s Saigon during the Vietnam War, and Madame Butterfly's story of marriage between an American lieutenant and a geisha is replaced by a romance between a United States Marine and a seventeen-year-old South Vietnamese bargirl.. $90/Person | 5:30 p.m. Bus Departs Sonoran Parking Area Bus departs the Gammage at the end of the performance

NORTH RIM OF THE GRAND CANYON – ARIZONA’S ULTIMATE FALL LEAVES TOUR Day One: We’ll leave the Valley with a stop for coffee and goodies, as we head north for lunch on self at beautiful and historic Cameron Trading Post. After lunch it’s back on the bus and we’ll continue north to our turnoff at Bitter Springs, where the ride really gets interesting. We’ll stop for a photo-op at Navajo Bridge, now a pedestrian walkway, offering incredible views of the Colorado River, then it’s off to Cliff Dwellers Lodge. After checking in, we’ll gather for our own Happy Hour, included. Later we’ll enjoy a free evening and dinner on self at the Cliff Dwellers Restaurant, offering a view of the Vermilion Cliffs, a crackling fire and a really diverse menu. Day Two: We’ll enjoy breakfast on self, at the hotel, and then it’s back on the bus. We’ll drive out of the dramatic Vermilion Cliffs, and into the lovely sandstone ledges and juniper pines of the Coconino National Forest. More breathtaking and remote than the South Rim, autumn at the North Rim shimmers with golden aspen. Fall color should be at its peak, while the weather is still pleasant, and the crowds have fallen away—making this the Ultimate Fall Leaves Driving Tour! Our journey will become more dramatic with every mile, as we make our way towards the North Rim. With overlooks reaching 9,000 feet, we’ll visit the Rim’s most spectacular viewpoints. Watch for bison herds, mule deer, wild turkeys, and Kaibab squirrels. We’ll enjoy a wonderful lunch on self, at the Grand Canyon Lodge patio—offering ring side seating for all this great scenery. Late that afternoon, we’ll head back to the Lodge for our own Happy Hour, and then dinner on self at the Lodge restaurant. Day Three: We’ll enjoy breakfast on self, at the hotel, then it’s bags out and we’ll head for home, with a stop for lunch on self and plenty of great sightseeing along the way. THE ARCHES & CANYONLANDS NATIONAL PARKS & SMOOTH WATER RAFTING Day One: We’ll leave the Valley and head north, with a stop for coffee & goodies, on our way to enjoy lunch on self at Cameron Trading Post. After lunch it’s back on the bus headed for Bluff, Utah and the very lovely Desert Rose Hotel—our headquarters for the next three nights. We’ll check into our hotel, and after a refresh we’ll gather again to enjoy dinner on self, with your choice of dining in the hotel’s award-winning restaurant, or head into historic Bluff where we’ll have a few rustic eateries to choose from. Later we’ll enjoy a free evening. Day Two: Breakfast on self at a local restaurant, then it’s back on the bus headed for the Sand Island launch ramp. After taking a few minutes to secure our cameras and sunscreen in dry bags, and a brief introduction to rafting, we’ll begin this remarkable 8 hour, 26-mile journey. The San Juan river, often described as calm and congenial, 52

offers a relaxing rafting experience in Southeastern Utah. This is a wonderful opportunity to explore the dramatic Goosenecks of the Lower San Juan, where rock formations can tower 1,000 feet overhead. We’ll visit Native American ruins; view bighorn sheep grazing along the shore and truly experience a red rock labyrinth that is one of the most complex canyons in the Colorado Plateau. This was once the home of the Anasazi, a desert farming culture who lived in this area eight to twenty centuries ago. Evidence of their time here is everywhere, with remains of their dwellings and the art that they carved in the rising sandstone walls. The Butler Wash petroglyph panel will be our first stop. Just a few feet from the river’s edge, this broad panel is filled with mysterious images carved by early Anasazi—the Basketmakers— some 1500 years ago. Further down the river, we’ll land again and walk an easy quarter mile to “River House,” a Pueblo III style cliff dwelling. With a small round kiva and several adjoining rooms tucked into a rock alcove, this structure is believed to be about 800 years old. Later we’ll continue down the river to a shady spot under a canopy of cottonwoods, to enjoy a delicious gourmet lunch. The journey continues, as the rock formations begin to take prominence when the river enters the Monument Upwarp, a giant wrinkle in the skin of the earth. As we near the end of our trip the river leaves the canyon and we pass beneath the balanced slab of “Mexican Hat” rock, where vans will be waiting to shuttle us back to Bluff. Dinner is on self this evening and later we’ll enjoy a free evening. Day Three: We’ll enjoy breakfast on self in town, before hopping back on the bus headed for Canyonlands National Park, located just west of Moab, Utah. With paved roads running through the park, Canyonlands offers the most spectacular scenic drive—wave after wave of famously deep canyons that drop suddenly from the desert floor and wind along the Colorado Plateau, accompanied by towering cliffs and sandstone spires. Later we’ll head into charming Moab, for lunch on self, with several wonderful restaurants to choose from. After lunch it’s back on the bus for the half-hour drive to Arches National Park, where we’ll journey the 18-mile (one way) scenic drive high onto the Plateau, crossing a vast landscape, offering panoramic views of distant snowcapped mountains. Arches is one of the most visited parks in the world, a wonderland of eroded sandstone fins, towers, ribs, gargoyles, hoodoos, balanced rocks and arches! Later we’ll head back to our hotel to enjoy dinner on self and a free evening. Day Four: Breakfast is on self, then it’s bags out and we’re off to enjoy an incredibly scenic drive through the Hopi and Navajo Nations, on into Winslow and the La Posada Hotel--the last great railroad hotel—built in 1929 by the Santa Fe Railway for the Fred Harvey Company. We’ll take some time to explore the La Posada and enjoy lunch on self, at the award-winning Turquoise Room, considered to be the best restaurant in the Four Corners region. After lunch it’s back on the bus and we’ll hightail it for the Valley, enjoying some great scenery along the way. This is a remarkable tour—truly a bucket-list of an experience and we hope you’ll join us! *This trip is offered in conjunction with Kindred Tours. LUNCH AT THE ASYLUM We’re on our way to Jerome, Arizona and the Grand Hotel. Famously spooky—the Grand Hotel was originally constructed in 1926 and started out as the United Verde Hospital, the most modern and well-equipped hospital in all of the western states. The hospital closed in 1950 as mining petered out, and then stood vacant for 44 years until the building was purchased, then renovated and reopened as the Grand Hotel. This is when the accounts of paranormal activities at the hotel began to be conveyed to the staff. Guests at the hotel have reported hearing coughing, labored breathing, and even voices coming from empty rooms. They have also reported smells coming from rooms, such as flowers, dust, cigar smoke, and whiskey. Others report light anomalies and the television sets turning themselves on with no explanation, and still others have reported seeing apparitions of women in nurse’s uniforms! Jerome is said to be one of the 10 most haunted cities in America, with the Grand Hotel being their most famously haunted building. Halloween at the Grand Hotel is just incredible, with spooky holiday décor streaming from end to end! We’ll enjoy a delicious lunch, included, at the awardwinning Asylum Restaurant—where the menu offers everything from gourmet salads to big delicious sandwiches and burgers, homemade soup and more. We’ll take some time after lunch to explore the hotel and then head into the charming and historic downtown area. MONSOON SEASON City Events

Nancy Hayden Council Member, District 2

Each year, a variety of weather related dangers affect the American Southwest. The time period from June 15 through September 30 is known as Monsoon season. A period of extreme heat is typically experienced which is followed by an increase of moisture that leads to daily thunderstorms. The heat is deadly on its own, causing more deaths than any other weather hazard in the region. In addition, thunderstorms produce a variety of hazards which often strike suddenly and with violent force. Lightning, high winds, dust storms and flash flooding are just a few of the typical monsoon hazards everyone must be mindful of. Dust storms are an underrated killer in Arizona. Within seconds, visibility can completely disappear. If you get caught in a dust storm, please pull off the road as far as you can. Ensure all of your lights are off and put your vehicle into park. Apply the parking brake and remove your foot from the brake pedal. Other motorists tend to follow taillights in an attempt to make their way through the storm. For more information please visit pullasidestayalive.com.

vehicle is suddenly caught in rising waters, please exit the vehicle and move to higher ground. Moving water, only 1-2 feet deep, will carry away most vehicles. Do not drive around barriers as they are placed for your protection. Be especially careful at night when water depth and road conditions are harder to see. The best way to stay safe is to plan ahead. Ensure you are checking current weather forecast updates and staying inside when inclement weather is near. Supply kits are a great way to protect yourself in severe weather conditions. It is recommended that a household should have three gallons of water for each person and pet in the house; also a stock of food that does not require cooking or refrigeration. Portable and battery operated radios, flashlights and extra batteries should be readily available as well. Stay inside and avoid driving when at all possible. For additional Monsoon safety tips and sandbag locations to help with flood protection, please visit surpriseaz.gov/ monsoon.

Flash flooding is the number one thunderstorm-related killer. Most flash flood deaths occur in vehicles. If your Grand Lifestyles | August 2019 | suncitygrand.com

UPGRADING TO A SMARTPHONE This might seem like an unusual request and I’m almost embarrassed to admit this, but I still have a flip phone which is just about on its last leg and hoped you could recommend the best new smartphone on the market. I am ready to take the plunge. Les, full time resident here in Grand

Dear Les, There is no need to be embarrassed about owning a flip phone. According to a recent study, only 42% of people in the US over the age of 68 own a smartphone and the number drops even more significantly for folks over age 80, where only 17% own smartphones. This is quite understandable in that these devices can be quite intimidating at first glance. In previous columns over the years when reviewing phones, Cappie has stated and will reiterate, there is no “one-size-fits-all” answer. The smartphone you should buy is the one that best fits your specific needs. Unless you are looking for one specifically geared to seniors—like the Jitterbug Smart 2 (a bare-bones smartphone with a simplified large-print menu), you should check out the latest-version smartphones which have either an Android or iPhone operating system (OS). If you can, Cappie also suggests, for the absolute latest iPhone options, wait a month or two for Apple to release its new iPhone 11 series or wait until year’s end for several Android manufacturers to release their latest versions of smartphones. Android and iPhone’s latest current models look impressive. They are equally easy to use when it comes to operating and using apps, multitasking, taking photos/videos, etc.—so there is no absolute front runner to recommend. Android has the edge when it comes to the number of makes and models to choose from (Huawei, Samsung, Sony, Nokia, LG, Acer, Pixel, etc.), although iPhone has added a few more models and price ranges to its lineup—but tends to be pricier than Android phones. If cost is a major concern, Android has the edge as far as affordability unless you are willing to settle for an older model iPhone. Both smartphone options offer a multitude of apps for everything from social media to games to productivity. 58

iPhone has its App Store to purchase additional apps and Android has its Google Play. While both offer a similar range of high-quality apps, be aware that sometimes apps containing malware are found in Google Play Store primarily because there is less scrutiny of thirdparty app developers. It is a less frequent occurrence than in the past, but it still presents a problem, especially for those who download a lot of apps. While the iPhone might have the edge here, you can minimize your risks of downloading malware-ridden or fake apps from the Google Play Store. Before randomly downloading an app, take the time to look up the app online, double-check the sources of download links, and check out trusted sites that review new apps. Just googling an app title many times displays information about the credibility of the developers and safety of the app. One major difference you will encounter with the latest iPhones is touch screen, gesture-based navigation—phones with no Home button. The iPhones X, XS, XS Max, and XR feature this new system. When Apple’s new iOS 13 is released this fall, it will also bring universal undo/redo gestures to phones from the iPhone 6s and newer. If privacy is a concern, according to Apple’s latest privacy policy, iOS does not “collect or sell identifiable data as search queries, Siri questions, log-identifying details about Apple Pay transactions… and Safari by default scrubs browsing data of identifying markers…making it more difficult for advertisers to track users around the web.” Android, on the other hand, is designed to collect as much data as possible. Google says it does so in the name of personalizing the user experience, including the ads it displays and the recommendations it might make on its other platforms. Google says it protects your data from abusive practices, but it does admit to decoding your data

using Google’s algorithms to better personalize your experience as in its Newsfeed, recommendations, and data searches. (Your data will also be subject to the privacy policies of the device manufacturer of the Android phone like Google Pixel, LG, Motorola, Samsung, Huawei, etc). If you use your phone in lieu of or equal to your computer, storage will be an important area to consider when purchasing a smartphone. If you shoot a lot of video and photos, using Cloud Storage is an economical option for storage. The Android Pixel Phone gives you unlimited photo storage for all your photos keeping their full resolution. Other Android phone brands offer unlimited photo storage on Google Drive as well, but the catch is your photos get compressed (the quality is still

good enough for small hard copy prints or for publishing on the web). iPhones come with only 5GB of free storage that is shared among all your iOS devices (like iPad, or other iPhones that use the same user ID). If you’re taking pictures or videos with both your iPad and iPhone, free storage will be used up quickly. You can download your pictures to your computer or to an external hard drive as an alternate option. If

compression of your photos is not an issue, an economical option for iPhone users is to download the Google Photo app from the Apple App store and store your iPhone photos automatically to Google Photo Drive. Go to the Google App>Settings>Backup and Sync. Understand that Google gives you the “free” storage service but be aware Google does gather data and information for using their storage services.

There is no “best” phone. One phone may have, for example, a slightly better still camera but another better video, but the actual differences of quality on the latest smartphones, for the average person, is actually very difficult to discern. You need to be comfortable with the way the phone works, the sound quality of the incoming and outgoing calls as well as streaming videos and music apps, the affordability of the phone itself and data plan, the speed of downloading and uploading data and images, and how much you care about personalizing your phone options. The best way to decide on the “right” phone is to read additional reviews online and eventually to check out the make, model, storage capacity, and processor power of the phone(s) you are considering--in person. Finally, be patient with yourself when you transition from a flip phone to a smartphone. There will be a lot to discover and learn, so take advantage of classes and of friends with the same type of phone. The more you learn about your smartphone, the more applications you will find helpful.
