Celebrating
T H E Christmas
Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed most commonly on December 25th as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world. While celebrated religiously by a majority of Christians, it is also celebrated culturally by many non-Christians and forms an integral part of the holiday season. This holiday is celebrated by going to church, giving gifts and sharing the day with families. In addition, several closely related and often similar figures, known as Santa Claus, Father Christmas and Saint Nicholas are associated with bringing gifts to children during the Christmas season. In some parts of Europe, "star singers" go caroling — singing special Christmas songs — as they walk behind a huge star on a pole.
Hanukkah (or Chanukah)
Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday honoring the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. It is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew Calendar, which can occur any time from late November to late December. Hanukkah means “dedication” in Hebrew. They do it to remember an ancient miracle in which one day's

During this spiritual holiday, celebrated from December 26 to January 1, millions celebrate by wearing special clothes, decorating their homes with fruits and vegetables, and the lighting of a candleholder called a kinara. The gathering of the people in which joy, sharing, unity, and thanksgiving are the fruits of collective planning and work. Since the family is the basic social and economic center of every civilization, the celebration bonded family members, reaffirming their commitment and responsibility to each other.
From America to Scandinavia and as Far as the East, the world celebrates the holidays with special rituals and festivities. Happiest of Holidays to you and yours.

Kwanzaa
Kwanzaa, which means "First Fruits," is based on ancient African
To honor this third-century saint on December 13, in Scandinavian countries each town elects its own St. Lucia. The festival begins with a procession led by the St. Lucia designee, who is followed by young girls dressed in white and wearing lighted wreaths on their heads and boys dressed in white pajama-like costume singing traditional songs. The festival marks the beginning of the Christmas season in Scandinavia, and it is meant to bring hope and light during the darkest time of the year. Families observe St. Lucia’s Day in their homes by having one of their daughters (traditionally the eldest) dress in white and serve coffee and baked goods, such as saffron bread (lussekatter) and ginger biscuits, to the other members of the family. These traditional foods are also given to visitors during the day.

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
Kenneth Olson, CMCA, AMS General Manager
The holiday season is here! For most of us, this is one of our favorite times of the year, a time when our world seems to become a little bit of a better place. Unfortunately, 2017 has been a very tough year for many communities, courtesy of Mother Nature. Thousands of fellow Americans are still struggling through the turmoil of destroyed or damaged homes, with some entire community infrastructures destroyed, long after the hurricanes, fires, floods, and earthquakes have passed. So, as we engage in our holiday traditions with laughter, song, and celebration, let’s remember how truly blessed we are to be enjoying this season in beautiful Sun City Grand. As we become aware of a need, even a small one, which we may have the means to help ease, let’s grasp the opportunity to reach out with the gift of caring action. In Sun City Grand, we, as a community, have much to be thankful for. December seems like a good time to take a quick look at some highlights of 2017.
In 2017, our Activities Department has managed 252 ticketed events. The updated, online software has improved the online ticketing process tremendously. The energetic, creative Activities staff has delivered dozens of new events, trips, and performances this year. A few of the big hits with Grand residents include: Wine-Down Wednesdays; Rise & Shine Breakfasts; Trivia Nights; SPLASH Pool Parties; Drive-In Movies on the Range; the Sagebrush Movie Series; a Mardi Gras Masquerade event; Wild West Palm Center Event; the Chaparral Auction… there are lots and lots more. The Fitness staff works tirelessly to provide top quality fitness experiences for Grand residents. As of November 1, 2017, use of the Adobe and Cimarron fitness centers was up 3%
beyond attendance for the same period of 2016. That's an increase of about 14,000 visits in 10 months! Existing cardio equipment has been replaced with high-tech Precor Aerobic equipment and software. New fitness classes in Tabata, Intro to Yoga, Kickstart Cardio, Cycle & Core, Barre Express, Interval Maxx, and Core Cardio have been added; and additional sessions of popular existing classes have been added to meet growing demand. The air is noticeably more breathable in the Adobe indoor pool, thanks to the newly installed AquaGen Advanced Oxygenation System. It releases fewer chloramines in the air, provides the added benefit of softer skin, and the reduced chemical usage has already resulted in significant cost savings. The same system will be installed in the Cimarron pool in early
2018. New pool heaters replaced the older ones in the Adobe activities/lap pool, improving gas usage from 78% to 94% efficiency (approximately $10,000 annually). Additionally, a pilot program was carried out in the spring of 2017 to evaluate making food/ beverage service available at the swimming pools. The program generated enough interest to merit a proposal to the Board in 2018. In January, over 100 people took part in a "Zumbathon" in the Sonoran Plaza. A 5K run took place in February, and the first SCG Indoor Triathlon was held in July at the Adobe fitness center. After a long summer of anticipation, the Granite Falls Pro Shop celebrated the completion of its newly remodeled facility with a Grand Opening in late October. The eagerly awaited opening of the remodeled Chaparral Center
CONVERSATION WITH KEN
The Conversation with Ken session provides a good opportunity for homeowners to bring questions to the General Manager and engage in discussion in a casual format. Conversation with Ken will resume in January 17, 2018 at 6 p.m. in the Palm Center.

I love this time of year as the cooler weather brings more people out in the community and we see familiar faces returning to this resort lifestyle. Holiday parties and visitors leave everyone in high spirits and quick with a smile or a compliment. My hope is that this contagious spirit carries over into the New Year – bringing with it a positive outlook for the one ahead. Your Board of Directors has planned for another productive year in 2018. In January the survey by Dr. Wendy Hultsman will be sent to those who requested it. That effort will be followed in February with two weeks of focus groups and then in March with the working groups. Throughout the first quarter, Dr. Hultsman will be meeting with various leaders from the Community to get even more perspective than just the survey results. The survey will include some open ended questions for those of you who have something to share that just did not quite fit into any of the (probably 100) questions on the survey. Design work, capital projects, and CARE projects will all be in various stages of activity through the winter and other projects slated for the summer when we are (slightly) less busy. The community will feature its favorite activities 12
like the Grand Series and the return of Wine Down Wednesdays. The Oak Ridge Boys and the Texas Tenors will grace our humble ballroom stage; raising our entertainment offerings to an even higher level! The new Grand Café offerings, fitness classes, and golf events will round out the coming season. Residents on the West end of the community may well be seeing new pool technology come to the Cimarron Center next year. 2017 has been a tremendously busy year at Sun City Grand. There was the debut of a new look for the Granite Falls Pro Shop and the Chaparral Center, fantastic new cardio equipment installed, a refreshing oxygenated pool opened, and countless upgrades to facilities and amenities on a smaller scale were made across this 4000 acre campus. But other parts of our country saw a much different reality. Our counterparts in other states suffered through two major hurricanes, two horrific mass shootings, devastating wildfires, and loss of life in our military. The losses to HOAs from the hurricanes and fires was estimated to be 75 billion dollars. That means special assessments on people already suffering personal losses and some communities, deemed a complete loss, will not even be rebuilt. While the world around us was full of loss, this community shone bright like the sun in Surprise. It certainly gives a sobering perspective of what constitutes turmoil. Now we head into a season known to be ripe with gratefulness, rejoicing, and reminiscing – the period from
Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day. As you each celebrate whichever dates you hold dear, I hope that you will be able to look back on 2017 and see what was wonderful. Whether you were able to travel, bought a new car, had another grandchild, took up a hobby, recovered from an illness or injury, or just enjoyed the beauty of your surroundings; we all have something for which to be thankful. All of that being said, if it was a tough year for you – we are wishing you an even better 2018. We hope that you will consider joining a club, volunteering to sit on a committee, attending some events to get to know your neighbors, taking a yoga class, running for the Board, or trying your hand at golf! Let’s see this community come together to support one another and lift each other up. It costs nothing to show kindness; I hope that “holiday spirit” becomes a GRAND tradition, instead of a passing season.
Sun City Grand continues to be one of the most sought after places to live in the metro Phoenix area? Inventory is shockingly low (112 homes on the market in SCG) showing that homeowners are not in a hurry to move out and buyers are waiting in line to get in! Resales in October were practically double October 2016’s number. So not only are we not losing new buyers, we can’t get inventory enough for all of the people trying to move here. Lastly, home values are actually up $5 per square foot (3.3%) over 2016. All of this is great news for this beautiful community!

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS
COME PLAY WITH US and still allows you to get the benefit of using a credit card. This will also allow you to skip the long check in lines on shotgun days by just signing your name on a list at the golf shop. Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations
Staff is looking forward to another spectacular season. I want to invite all of you to come out to the three golf shops and look at all of the great new merchandise that has been arriving. We feel that this is our best year ever for merchandise selection and hope that you agree. Staff wants to remind everyone who is just getting back into town to remember to bring your resident card with you every time you check in. Every resident must check in with the golf shop with their I.D. card in order to receive the resident rates. To help keep our operating cost down and to make it easier for you, we have a credit book available. A credit book is a way for you to place an amount of money on an account and every time you play or buy something, it deducts from that account. It saves us the credit card swiping fees 14
If you are just getting back into town and you are finding that your game might be a little rusty, I want to remind you that my staff and I are available for lessons to help get that rust off. It is amazing how just one lesson can improve your game and give you more enjoyment and confidence. Our teaching staff consists of: Jeff Hochman

We also have group clinics available called “Cactus Practice” located at Cimarron on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am -11am at a cost of $15/person. Please don’t forget to repair ball marks on the greens and to fill divots. On your last hole of play in a shotgun, please take a few minutes to empty out your sand containers and fill as many divots as you can. This will help keep the courses in great shape. After your round, don’t forget to support the snack bars. Until next month, keep it in the short stuff.

FROM THE Treasurer
2018 BUDGET and every expenditure and source of revenue received detailed scrutiny. I am comfortable that this budget will serve us well next year.
Larry Marden Treasurer
At its November meeting the Board of Directors approved the Association’s 2018 budget. As always, it was a team effort. Thanks to the Golf Advisory Committee, the Finance Advisory Committee, the CAM staff, and especially the Finance Manager for their dedication and hard work. We had twelve meetings open to the residents over a period of 6 weeks
There are no significant deviations from the 2017 budget. The 2018 operating budget shows planned revenues of $20.3 million, expenditures of $20.1 million, and a surplus of $174,000. Capital projects totaling $1.5 million are planned, including converting our interior lights to LED, installation of granite in the common areas, work on the maintained properties, and bunker modifications on the golf courses. The Board has elected to raise the annual assessment by 4%, from $1,370 to $1,425, beginning in July of 2018. We are once again subject to an increase in the Arizona minimum wage, and I
am happy to report that we were able to make a $3.4 million contribution to our Reserve Fund (for repair and replacement of our property) that keeps us on a steady path to achieve the Board’s prescribed target of 70% funded. We were at 60.9% in January 2017 and expect to be at 62.1% in January 2018. In addition, increases were approved to all of the golf passes (but not the resident daily rate), the adult guest fee, and fitness personal training. The payroll was increased by approximately 4%, including adjustments made necessary by the increase in the minimum wage. I wish you all happy holidays and a healthy New Year. All the best, Larry

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER
SUN CITY GRAND FITNESS:
Personalizing the Cardio Experience Allison Adams Fitness Manager
Over the summer we upgraded the cardio equipment at Adobe and Cimarron. Many of you continued your cardio workouts without a skip. Some of you attended our free orientations to get more familiar with the new Precor and SciFit touch screens, and Precor’s more extensive entertainment options. Did you know that you can now track your cardio workouts when using our Precor equipment? With these new machines, you now have opportunities to personalize your cardio experience through software additions! Let’s start with Preva. Preva is state-of-the-art software designed to personalize your fitness experience. This software is part of the Precor console on our treadmills, ellipticals, AMTs, upright, and recumbent bikes. You can add the Free Preva app to track your workouts inside or outdoors. This app allows you to earn badges while you accomplish key milestones in pursuit of your goals. You can even share your badges on social media, like Facebook and Twitter! Stop by the fitness centers where you can sign up for our free Precor Preva orientations to learn more about how to set up your own account and 18
purchase the Preva key fob to store your personal workout data. Maybe your goals are more specific; a doctor’s prescription to improve overall fitness, that competition you want to excel at, etc. Precor has teamed up with EXOS (Look them up at teamexos.com) to develop personalized, cardiorespiratory evaluations to measure your current fitness level, and direct your progress through customized, cardiorespiratory programming, called ESD. EXOS ESD software is now available for a limited time (Summer 2018) at the EXOS Training Zone in the Adobe gym. Sun City Grand has contracted to provide this state-ofthe-art software, and based on feedback, could extend to additional Precor equipment in the future. Here are a few FAQs about EXOS ESD: What is ESD? ESD stands for Energy Systems Development. It is a personalized and intelligent training system that helps to upgrade your metabolic performance by working through a series of targeted training intervals. Much more efficient and effective than traditional cardio training.
How do I get started? It’s easy – once you’ve registered with the fitness staff, all you need is your phone number, and a 4-digit PIN to sign in. Your first session will be a quick and intuitive evaluation. Choose any device (bike, treadmill, or elliptical) and follow the simple instructions on screen to get started. The evaluation is quick and easy to complete – it will push you past your comfort zone, but don’t worry, it’s not a maximal test. What’s so special about the training experience? Once you’ve completed the evaluation the system will create a personalized and progressive training plan just
for you! Each time you login, it will progress you along your plan. In each workout your speed and resistance targets for each interval will be provided, and it will automatically guide you through each one. No need to fiddle with the controls – just focus on putting in the effort. Everyone is welcome to utilize this new addition to our fitness centers. Demonstrations are scheduled, and will be advertised through Eblast and flyers. These provide more information, and an opportunity to register and sign up for supervised or selfevaluations.

and Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area Day One: We’ll leave the Valley with a stop for coffee and goodies on our way to Tombstone, Arizona—the Town Too Tough To Die—where we’ll enjoy lunch on self. Tombstone’s full of fun little restaurants, galleries and shops and we’ll explore the town’s historic streets before jumping back on the bus headed for Sierra Vista. We’ll check into our hotel, and take some time for a refresh before heading into Bisbee to enjoy a fabulous three-course chicken dinner and a glass of wine, included, at award winning Café Roka. After dinner we’ll head back to our hotel, knowing that we’ll be looking at a 5:00 a.m. wakeup on Day Two! Day Two: We’ll hit the road by 6 a.m. headed for Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area, one of the best places to view sandhill cranes, with an estimated winter population of over 30,000! The Draw is in the Sulphur Springs Valley, a Chihuahuan desert grassland habitat, surrounded by Arizona’s sky islands. The sandhill cranes spend the night standing in Whitewater Draw’s shallow waters to evade predators, and then fly out each morning at the crack of dawn, to feed and socialize in the surrounding 24
A sense of history. BISBEE BEGINNINGS In 1877, a reconnaissance detail of U.S. army scouts and cavalrymen was sent to the Mule Mountains to search the area for renegade Apaches. What civilian tracker Jack Dunn found instead were signs of mineralization indicating the presence of lead, copper and possibly silver. The first mining claim was staked in what would later become the City of Bisbee. The filing of this claim, and a multitude of others sent prospectors and speculators scurrying to the Mule Mountains in hopes of striking it rich. Numerous ore bodies were located, and Bisbee soon became known as the "Queen of the Copper Camps."
area. With an impressive wingspan of 6 to 7 feet, the early morning mass ascension of the sandhill cranes is something that should be on everyone’s bucket list! There is no visitor’s center at the Draw, but there are restrooms, and we’ll be serving plenty of hot coffee along with a continental style breakfast. In addition to sandhill cranes, the waters of Whitewater Draw attract many kinds of ducks, geese, herons, egrets, shorebirds, gulls and terns.
WHITEWATER DRAW WILDLIFE AREA Located in southeastern Arizona. Typically thought of as a major roost site for Sandhill Crane, Whitewater Draw offers excellent waterfowling as well. During wet years numerous waterfowl can be found in and around this Wildlife Area. There is a seasonal closure on hunting during the Crane hunt, which typically falls in November-early December. The Department currently manages Whitewater Draw for waterfowl, cranes, and other wetland associated birds. Many people visit Whitewater Draw each winter to experience the memorable sights and sounds of more than 20,000 sandhill cranes. These birds spend the night standing in Whitewater Draw’s shallow waters to evade predators, and then fly out each morning to feed and socialize in the surrounding area. They return to Whitewater Draw in the afternoon and evening.
We’ll also keep our eyes open for mammals using these grasslands as a source of food, water and shelter. Mammals seen here include mule deer, javelina, coyote, bobcat, desert cottontail and black-tailed jackrabbit.
Formerly a cattle ranch, Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area was purchased in 1997 and is now managed to enhance wetland habitats and provide waterfowl habitat, and wildlife viewing. Later we’ll head back to our hotel for a quick refresh, then it’s bags out and we’re back on the bus headed for historic Bisbee. We’ll take some time to explore this beautiful living ghost town, full of art galleries, coffee shops and antique stores. Bisbee is also home to many wonderful little restaurants, and we’ll enjoy lunch on self. Later we’ll head for home through the rolling grasslands of Southern Arizona—the beautiful San Raphael Valley—always an amazing driving tour. This tour is a Travel Club Classic! Call in your reservations and don’t miss out on the fun!

SCG Resident of the Month Lynn Giuliani Lynn Giuliani, originally from California, is now a resident in Sun City Grand. Having said that, Lynn is most certainly not retired. She is a professional speaker and Trainer who travels the country motivating others through her company called Progressions, Inc. It was on her 60th birthday that her husband bought her a wheel and kiln to, hopefully, keep her at home more. Not sure how that worked out, but Lynn has been active in Clay Arts for the past 10 years. Lynn says that working with clay offers her a release from all the traveling she must do for work. When asked what motivated her to choose Clay Arts, she replied she had always been “fascinated” with clay. Lynn would classify herself as an “intermediate” potter, but by the photos enclosed, she would seem to have a solid handle on working in her field. Lynn had not taken any classes in clay before coming to SCG, however, since then she has taken a number of classes from Peter Flynn at Marjon’s, a local clay studio. It was at a contest Marjon’s was sponsoring, called Clay Olympics, where Lynn won First Place. The contest was interesting and reminded one of the Cow Girl Up competition in Wickenburg each spring. There each artist is given an hour to create a painting, sculpture or some 26
other piece of art in another medium. The girls have one hour, 60 minutes. In the Clay Olympics, the artists are given 12 pounds of clay and 12 minutes (yes, 12 minutes), to create the largest and widest bowl possible. If you know anything about working
on a wheel with clay, clay likes to fold in on itself if it is over worked or if too much water is used or too much pressure is applied, so this is no small feat to accomplish, much less in such a limited amount of time. The awardwinning bowl is seen with Lynn in the top photo included. Oddly enough, Lynn said she struggled with the wheel originally, but she decided to not give

Nomination forms are available at the Activites office, and completed nominations need to be submitted to the Activites office by the 10th of the month. up and the results speak for themselves. When asked to give a piece of advice to others who may be interested in Clay Arts, Lynn suggested trying new things and taking
risks. Stop by the Clay Arts Studio sometime and perhaps you could be lucky enough to see this artist working if she isn’t on the road speaking, that is.

Three Healthy Lessons From Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE
The story of Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer offers a number of life lessons for all of us; lessons like believing in yourself, appreciating differences and setting a goal and sticking with it. If you delve a little deeper into this holiday classic, you’ll also find lessons about good nutrition, proper exercise and reducing stress.
EAT WELL, JINGLE BELL A memorable line from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is “Eat, Papa, eat,” spoken by Mrs. Claus to Santa Claus. Most of us assume Mrs. Claus was urging Santa to fatten up for Christmas. In fact, she was telling Santa to eat a healthy and balanced diet. Follow these tips for enjoying holiday foods without the guilt and a Santa-size waistline: n If you host a holiday party, provide healthy snacks such as wholegrain or pita chips with salsa, or fresh-cut vegetables with guacamole. n If you’re a guest, offer to bring a dish such as baked sweet potatoes sprinkled with orange juice and cinnamon or a vegetable casserole. n Eat smaller portions and slow your pace of eating. Give your stomach time to realize it is “full.” n Don’t loiter by the buffet table at a party. Instead of hanging by the hors d'oeuvres, get out there and mingle like Kris Kringle. n Holidays can leave little time to prepare meals. Fast food is convenient but most of it is high in fat and calories. Prepare and freeze healthy meals ahead of time.
back burner. Here are a few tips to help you rock the holidays with festive physicality. n Having difficulty getting in 30 continuous minutes of exercise? Divide the exercise into 10 to 15-minute segments. n If you drive to a shopping mall, park in spaces farthest from the stores. n Plan parties that are activity-oriented. Take a group walk or hike, play horseshoes, softball or pickle ball or go bowling. Play a reindeer game. n If you like holiday lights and decorations, go sightseeing on foot instead of by car or sleigh.
BUMBLES BOUNCE When the Abominable Snowman (aka Bumble) fell off a cliff, it appeared he was a goner. He miraculously reappears later in the story, not only alive but free of stress. Rudolph asks Yukon Cornelius, who also
went over the cliff, how they survived. Yukon simply replies: “Bumbles bounce.” Bouncing back from holiday stress will be easier if you practice these simple techniques. n Unlike Santa Claus, you can’t take care of the world. Limit your commitments. Focus on what really matters. Temper your expectations. n Try to get at least seven hours of sleep each night (Count “dancing sugar plums” if that helps.) n Avoid overspending. You don’t have to buy expensive gifts to create happy memories. n Schedule relaxation into your day, even if it’s just a few deep breaths. n Plan ahead. Don’t be too proud to ask for help. Take good care of your health over the holidays and like Rudolph, “You’ll go down in history.”
GET YOUR DEER IN GEAR Rudolph and the other reindeer practiced their flying and played “reindeer games” to get and stay in shape. With holiday bustle it is easy to put exercise on the 28

FROM THE PAPER ARTS AND MEMORIES CLUB
Thanks a Million How do you say “thanks a million” to a group that graciously took you in when you were temporarily displaced? Well, the SCG Paper Arts and Memories Club (PA&M), said it by creating about 100 handmade greeting cards and presenting them to Gayle Isley, president of the Sun City Grand Art Club, at its general meeting on November 1st .
Kathy Soderholm, PA&M president, thanked the assembled group for hosting her group for the past 5-1/2 months. She pointed out that the Art Club had “taken us in twice. The original paper arts group got its start under the umbrella of The Art Club years ago.” And this year, while the Chaparral Center was undergoing a major refurbishment and PA&M had nowhere to meet and create, the Art Club came to the rescue, offering the use of Art Studio II. With 166 members, PA&M needed space to meet, craft cards and digital scrapbooks, as well as a place to store at least some of the tools they use each week. The Art Club not only opened up their room every Tuesday, but also generously freed up multiple cabinets for the paper arts club to use. The collection of cards PA&M presented were hand-created by members over the past few months, and included Thank You, Sympathy, and Thinking of You messages. PA&M hopes that the cards will be used by the Art Club whenever they need to send a special message to someone. Joining Kathy Soderholm at the presentation were three other PA&M
members: Elaine Clesi, vice president, Val Papas, historian, and Vicki Gibbs club editor. (Pictured along with Gayle Isley.) PA&M also wanted to send a special thank you to the wonderful Sun City Grand activities office employees. Lorena Nieto, lifestyles manager, Mallory Burzynski, lifestyles coordinator, and Kathy Sparks, room reservationst, patiently persisted in facilitating the club’s move out of the Chaparral Center rooms and into Art Studio II.
For those unfamiliar with the Paper Arts and Memories club, it provides a place to create and share greeting cards, paper crafting, digital crafting, mixed media, scrapbooks and more. They will be meeting each Monday from 8-2 in the Hopi and Pima Rooms in Chaparral Center once the renovation is complete. They have lots of tools for members to use and they hold frequent classes to teach various techniques. For more information, visit their website: www. paperartsandmemories.com.

A PERFECT VACATION Submitted by Bob Richards C.H.A.P.S. Chair
I could tell at the dinner table the question that was coming from my wife. After this many years of marriage you know what your spouse is thinking even before she says it out loud. “Why don’t we go out in the evening anymore?
Why don’t we take a romantic vacation anymore?” I could feel the spousal pressure. I felt like a criminal being drilled by the prosecuting attorney. I had to come up with a satisfying answer . . . and fast. “Well, dear, I have some really good news for you. We are going to Emerald Cove…

As a matter of fact, all our C.H.A.P.S. evening patrollers do the same service for our SCG friends and neighbors. We welcome more residents to join us at C.H.A.P.S. to take that “perfect vacation” with Evening Patrol. Membership applications are available at grandinfo.com or at the chartered club information desk outside the SCG library.
Laguna Azul…Capitol Reef… Grand Isle…Paradiso… Tranquility…and Turquoise Point.” “Wow! That sounds so great, Bob. So where are we going? Hawaii? Bora-Bora? Tahiti? What a perfect vacation!” “Well, not exactly. These are streets in Sun City Grand. I signed us up for Evening Patrol tonight with C.H.A.P.S. Let’s hurry and get the dishes done. We have to be at the C.H.A.P.S. office in an hour.” Okay, maybe it wasn’t a romantic evening, let alone a perfect vacation. But it was an evening out in the moonlight to “tour” 24 miles of Sun City Grand over two hours and check

TAD PRESENTS: SEPHIRA The international music sensation, Sephira, features dueling violins and captivating vocals covering the greatest hits and anthems of our time. Sisters Ruth and Joyce O’Leary deliver their distinct brand of powerful melodies leaving the audience with an exhilarating sense of empowerment and strength. The spark of greatness started very early on for both Sisters. Joyce began playing violin at the age of two and a half, and Ruth at six. Years later, after studying at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Sephira broke away from their traditional classical influences and became known for their self-described “dueling violins and ethereal vocals.” Their psychic “sisterly connection” is very apparent on stage with their delivery and mirror-like choreography. Sephira are undeniably one of the World’s most exciting musical talents having appeared with Andrea Bocelli, Kanye West, Michael Buble and Enya. This was all followed by a two-year engagement as the dancing violinists for the show,“ Celtic Thunder.” $20/person Front of House | $17/person Back of House Evening Shows | 6:30 p.m. Cash Bar; 7 p.m. Performance | Sonoran Plaza $20/person Front of House | $17/person Back of House Matinee Shows | 3:30 p.m. Cash Bar; 4 p.m. Performance | Sonoran Plaza

MUSIC CLUB PRESENTS - MANLY LOVE SONGS, PART VI - MORRIE GOES TO MAYO’S The manly Men of Sun City Grand’s Music Club, have progressed from “Amateur Night” patrons of “Morrie’s Tap” (Parts 1, 2 & 3) to participants in a “Reunion” (Part 4) after the tavern closed. That was followed by a rather ill-conceived and ill-fated “Road Trip” (Part V). They’ve barely recovered from that trip when they find out their erstwhile leader, Morrie, has fallen ill and is undergoing a series of tests in the famous Mayo Clinic. The Manly Men come rushing to support him at the clinic. What follows is a mad musical mixture of hilarious proportions involving medical testing, diagnostics, procedures, insurance; all things medical. The show is filled with uproarious parodies of relevant pop songs such as “Mayo, May – ay –ay -o” (from Day-O, the Banana Boat Song). The vocal music is performed by soloists, small groups, and maybe even a reappearance of the (in)famous “Dust Devils” ne’er do well chorus (if they can get their act together). The music is live and lively – both vocals and accompaniment. Come join the in the fun at “Morrie Goes to Mayo’s!!!! BISBEE, ARIZONA & THE SANDHILL CRANES OF WHITEWATER DRAW WILDLIFE AREA We will stop in Tombstone for lunch on your own, shopping and exploring the town’s historic streets. After checking into the hotel you will enjoy a fabulous three-course chicken dinner and a glass of wine, included, at award winning Café Roka. On day 2 you will head for the Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area, one of the best places to view sandhill cranes, with an estimated winter population of over 30,000! The sandhill cranes spend the night standing in Whitewater Draw’s shallow waters to evade predators, and then fly out each morning at the crack of dawn, to feed and socialize in the surrounding area. With an impressive wingspan of 6 to 7 feet, the early morning mass ascension of the sandhill cranes is something that should be on everyone’s bucket list! There is no visitor’s center at the Draw, but there are restrooms, and we’ll be serving plenty of hot coffee along with a continental style breakfast Later we’ll head back to our hotel for a quick refresh, and we’re back on the bus headed for historic Bisbee. Jim Hayden Council Member, District 2
The holiday season is upon us and what a wonderful time we will have celebrating with friends, family and neighbors. As you’re preparing for the festivities, be that holiday parties, decorating your home, crafting and baking, or shopping for gifts, I encourage you to shop local and keep your money in Surprise. Did you know that local
sales tax makes up nearly 40% of the city’s General Fund revenues which pays for police, fire-medical, street maintenance, and our beautiful city parks? The money you spend in Surprise helps provide essential services and shapes our community. Plus, when you frequent your favorite Surprise restaurants, retailers, etc., you are helping to maintain and create jobs in our city. If that’s not enough motivation, the Surprise Chamber of Commerce and the city have partnered to provide you with additional incentives for shopping locally. You can now join the city’s ShopSurprise initiative by texting ‘ShopSurprise’ (one word) to 85100 to opt
in and receive daily discounts from your favorite merchants. This same campaign was used last year during the Bell-Grand Bridge Project with great success! However this year it will be bigger and better; when you opt in to receive the daily messages you’ll now receive discounts from businesses throughout Surprise. Also, unlike last year, the deals won’t end in December; you’ll be able to take advantage of the savings year-round! Additional opportunities to view the daily deals in lieu of text messages include: n Visit shopsurpriseaz.com to view the daily deals online; n Like the Shop Surprise, Arizona Facebook page and have the deals appear in your timeline; or
Follow @ShopSurpriseAZ on Twitter to have deals tweeted to you daily.
n
Retrieving the daily deal is easy; once you learn the deal of the day, you simply go to the offering business and let them know you would like to receive the daily deal. Join me in supporting our city and our businesses. Let’s ShopSurprise! If you have questions about the shop local initiative or want more information, please contact me at 623.222.1322 or email me at jim.hayden@surpriseaz.gov.

Trees & Oxygen have clay type soil, proper watering is even more important because the clay will hold the water much longer. Sometimes we think that water is like vitamin C for humans and that more water is the cure for any tree problems. Watering too often will also create an environment conducive to bacterial or fungal pathogens which will cause the tree to decline.
Trees require a few things to survive. Water, nutrients, sun, and oxygen are the essentials for a heathy plant or tree. If we are constantly watering our trees the water will displace the oxygen in the soil and the tree will decline. If you
Watering deeply and then allowing the soil to dry out is the best way to allow oxygen into the soil. One way to tell when to water again is to push a probe into the soil. When the probe meets the dryer soil it cannot be pushed easily. Another method is to purchase a moisture meter that tells when the top few inches of the soil has dried out.

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT
about laptop computers
continued from last month
Dear Cappie, I am interested in buying a new laptop, but so much has changed in the last four years that I’m not sure what I need or what components the device should have. Help! Sincerely, Julie
Dear Julie, Before shopping for a laptop, decide how you intend to use the device, and then look for one that will meet those needs. n Price: how much are you willing to spend? n Weight: will you be carting it everywhere you go? n Screen size: do you play games, edit video or photos, or have vision issues? n Energy efficiency: how many hours of battery power will you need? How much heat is generated? Noise? n Power & memory: do you play 3D/ virtual reality games, create 3D imagery, play with high-end editing apps? n Ports: Will the new thinner USB-C port meet your needs or do you need to connect to a TV or monitor or use accessories such as memory sticks, hubs, or external hard drives? Because of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, we use ports a lot less than we used to but be aware of whether you can use an inexpensive adapter for the new USB-C port or whether you want to shop for a laptop with the older USB-A or USB-B rectangular ports. As stated in last month’s column, if your only interests are viewing social media sites, surfing the Web, watching online videos, sending emails, creating text documents and some simple photo organizing, an inexpensive to middlerange model laptop will suffice. But …
if it is barely usable because it’s so slow, or it has so little storage space that it taxes the system when you download additional apps and process data, it will not be much of an improvement. Here are some of the components you should review before purchasing a new laptop. n CPU/Processor. A Central Processing Unit (CPU) is the “brain” of a computer. It is not advisable to buy a new laptop with a processor design that is two years or older because it will be outdated just that much sooner. The latest CPUs from Intel are the Core i5, and i7 series in 7th-generation models, but the 8th generation models are right around the corner. (Most of the popular tech sites agree that the Intel Core i78700K and the AMD Ryzen 1950X are the latest and best processors available as of this writing). You can check any one of the following websites to compare the current top processors before purchasing: https://www. notebookcheck.net/Mobile-ProcessorsBenchmark-List.2436.0.html https:// www.cpubenchmark.net/ , https:// browser.geekbench.com/processorbenchmarks, http://www.cpu-world. com/. n Memory. RAM stands for Random Access Memory, which is the computer’s ability to store and access information for immediate use. The
memory used for RAM only holds onto that data while the chip is powered, so it’s not designed to hold information long term. Too little RAM creates a bottleneck that slows everything down; therefore, generally, the more RAM you have, the better. While not all tasks need mega amounts of RAM, if you are playing high end games, tech experts suggest you opt for 8GB of RAM if you want decent performance. For example, it will provide good (but not great) support for photo editing if you also have a dozen or so browser tabs open. Major tech sites suggest that 4GB of RAM is not enough: it will exhaust the system after simply opening some documents and a handful of browser tabs. [The 16GB system of RAM supports dozens of tabs, numerous concurrent media streams and even offers usable gaming play. Unless you plan on doing a huge amount of multitasking while gaming, there’s little reason for most gamers or video/ photo editors to go beyond 16GB of memory.] n Storage: SSD or HDD. Storage is the amount of space available on a hard drive to hold data. • HHD is the older mechanical spinning platter type hard drive. HHDs have a tremendous amount of storage (into the terabytes) but they are much slower.
Today’s column photo features a beautiful tan Yorkie named Kandi Kisses and a white Bichon named Kokonut. Their owners are Sun City Grand residents, Annie and Helen. Check out the Grand Computer Club website www.grandcomputers.org for the latest information regarding 2018 computer classes; how you can get help with your laptop, desktop, tablet, or smartphone; special interest groups, and more. apps and HHD for data.
• SSD is the newest solid-state drive and 3 to 4 times faster than the speediest mechanical HHD. In the past, all your programs, videos, music, photos, etc. were stored on the hard drive. Since most users today use web-based apps instead of installed local software, as well as store photos, music and videos in the cloud or on external drives, new laptops come with less storage. n
A laptop with a 128 GB drive is virtually useless unless you will primarily be web surfing or using web based programs. In fact, once you add standard programs like the Chrome Browser, Office 365, and Photoshop, a 256 SSD drive will 75% filled.
Therefore, many tech experts recommend a 500 GB SSD and/or a laptop with 2 drives: SSD for storing
n
Smaller laptops do not have enough room for two storage drives, however, so the other option is to an add external 1, 2 or 3 TB drive with your new laptop.
n
Touch Screen. It combines the convenience of a tablet with the utility of a keyboard. It is much more versatile than a standard laptop but also more expensive and tends to weigh more. Your needs and budget should determine if one is right for you. Try out the laptop before you buy it. Make sure the keyboard is comfortable, the design is one you can live with, and the components fit your current and future needs.
n
Graphics Cards. Video cards generate the images that a program needs to display on the screen. With most laptops, the video card will come
n
integrated into the motherboard and for most users, the video card is not something to be too concerned about. The most important uses for choosing a laptop with the very high-end video cards are for those who do gaming and for those who create three dimensional models or are doing video editing. If you want the latest and best cards, as of this writing, NVIDIA 's Latest series is the 10 series, (GTX 1080, 1070, and 1060) and will be found in the more expensive powerful gaming and business class laptops. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 (Ti Founder's Edition) and the ADMRaydeon RX 480 (8GB) and Radeon R9 M485X are the top end of the spectrum while the Idioms Radeon series (R7 M270X) are a cheaper alternative (found in more budget laptops).
