Men Putters Club
www.scgmenputters.weebly.com
Have any interest in putting?
Want to meet others that share this interest? If so, then plan to come over to the beautiful 18-hole putting green located just west of the Cimarron club house, right off of W. Clearview Blvd. You are invited to play a “guest” round with one of a Men Putters club member.
putting scHedule
The Men Putters do “their thing” weekly on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, at 1:00 PM, all 3 days, starting in November. (In the summer, we go to an early morning start time in order to beat the heat.) Members feel free to pick whatever day they prefer to participate and some even putt all 3 days.
Here is a typical daily event
Register to play, be paired with another person, putt 18 holes, and lastly, participate in a 19th hole challenge (this is a special one-hole challenge). Other change-of-pace fun putting challenges are offered throughout the year long program.
social activities
There are some occasional social activities when members meet to vote on new officers OR just meet for club sponsored soda and hot dogs.
volunteers
Member volunteers run the club’s daily putting activities such as setting up the course, registering members and guests, etc.
the Men putters is a new club, started several years ago, and membership has continued to grow with each new season.
Membership, pictures and lots of other information can be found on our website: www.scgmenputters.weebly.com. or, you can simply stop by the cimarron green to meet us and just ask about joining.

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
Kenneth Olson, CMCA, AMS General Manager
Homeowner Engagement Builds A Stronger Community After moving into Sun City Grand, you’ve become a part of a unique group of people with a shared purpose: keeping property values high, enjoying a good quality of life, and working to make your community a better place to live. But that doesn’t happen on its own. It takes homeowner involvement to create a vibrant, healthy community. That’s what makes volunteering so important – serving on a committee, joining a volunteer service group like C.H.A.P.S., or choosing to become a board member gives you a direct say when it comes to the future of your community. Needless to say, it works. Communities with involved owners are typically run better and are more rewarding places to live. The opposite is also true – an apathetic group of owners does little to enhance anyone’s quality of life. Sun City Grand has many people engaged in Board- Appointed Committees, C.H.A.P.S., the Welcome Center, Library, Puzzle Room, etc. and, of course, the Board of Directors. Everyone wants to live in a dynamic community environment that
services the current and future needs of its residents. So now that you know involvement is crucial to a healthy community, here are three ways to get you plugged in: 1. Attend monthly Board and Board Appointed Committee meetings. This is an easy one, and it’s a great place to start. You’ll get the chance to meet other residents along with your current Board of Directors and the CAM management team. Attending these meetings allows a resident to become familiar with the present and future challenges and opportunities facing the Association. An individual’s presence and input at these meetings can help shape the decision-making process as a member of the Association leadership. Please note all of these open meetings are listed on the Association website and published in the monthly Grand Lifestyles magazine. 2. Consider serving on a Board-Appointed Committee. Committees are groups of volunteers who, put simply, get things done. Each member is appointed by the Board and the committee answers to the Board. The best part? You can choose a committee that aligns with your personal passions and interests. In the process of doing your committee work, you’ll not only help your association make great strides forward, but you’ll also build important bonds with your fellow residents. There is an annual “Call For Candidates” for
positions on the eight Board-Appointed Committees. The Board-Appointed Committees are: Architectural Review, CARE (Community and Residential Enhancement), Code of Conduct, Covenants, Election, Finance, Golf and Lifestyles. Applications will be available on the Association website and at the Membership Desk in the Palm Center beginning February 20, 2017. 3. Become a member of the Board of Directors. Here it is: the pinnacle of how to make an impact. As a Board member, you’re part of the leadership team that defines the future of Sun City Grand. As a duly elected member of the Board, you’ll fulfill a host of duties, including creating the policies that make your community a great place to live. It’s a big job, and as such, it requires some big commitments in terms of dedication, responsibility and time. The stability and fiscal strength of your association will rest on your shoulders. But all it takes is a willingness to do right by your community. For more information, check out the duties of the Board in the Association’s Bylaws Articles III, Section C. Powers and Duties, Paragraph 3.19 under Duties. Sun City Grand’s election process for the Board of Directors begins in January 2017. The application packet for interested candidates will be available January 3, 2017 on the www.grandinfo.com website or you may pick up a copy at the Membership Desk in the Palm Center.
Conversation with Ken
The Conversation with Ken session provides a good opportunity for homeowners to bring questions to the General Manager and engage in discussion in a casual format. Conversation with Ken will resume in January 2017, in the Palm Center.

Also, there is an inspection that takes place upon the placement of your home into escrow. You will be notified of any items on the property which are not compliant and what steps you will need to take to bring the property into compliance. Next there will be a second inspection to see that the items are addressed prior to the new owners taking possession of the home.
SHARING OUR KNOWLEDGE Kym Stutzman Community Manager 623-546-7426 kymberlee.stutzman@ scgcam.com
At the Executive Offices in Palm Center we field dozens of Resident questions every day. We thought that it might be helpful to share some of that wisdom with the residents at large. Here are a few bits of information for you; we hope you find them helpful!
Holiday Decorations Here in SCG we love looking festive. Please remember to follow the guidelines for putting up and taking down your decorations. For the December season, you may decorate Thanksgiving weekend and have your items removed by January 8th. For all other holidays (such as Halloween or Valentine’s Day) the decorations may go up two weeks prior to and must be down five days after the holiday. Also, we do have light and sound nuisance 14
rules which still apply seasonally. Please make sure that music plays softly and for limited time frames and that lights do not create glare on neighboring lots or streets. As always, keep the quantity proportionate with the size of your lot. Enjoy!
Vehicle “For Sale” Signs Residents are not allowed to display “For Sale” signs on any vehicles in SCG. This includes on golf cars and also applies to vehicles parked in common parking lots and residential driveways. Feel free to advertise on www.GrandInfo.com or in the Lifestyles magazine instead. Landscape Encroachment If a tree or shrub from a neighboring lot is encroaching on your property, you may trim it. Remember, you may only trim what is on your property and you must dispose of the trimmings accordingly in your own trash. Driveway Coatings If you are having the coating on your driveway reapplied and there are no color changes to your home’s color scheme or the coating, you do not need
Security Cameras and Lights These items are becoming more popular in SCG but they do require prior approval. Please complete an ARC application before installing them. Also, be mindful that the cameras or lights are not affecting neighboring property. Dog Walking Residents may walk their dogs on any common area thoroughfare which is not posted otherwise. Dog walking is not limited to the Dog Park (remember you need a special tag there). It is both a City Ordinance and a SCG rule that you must pick up after your pet and dispose of the waste properly. Waste bags are provided in many areas around the Community. Walking Trails vs. Common Area SCG has an amazing trail system. It has benches, fountains, a GPS trail marking system, trashcans and pet waste stations. While all residents are entitled to enjoyment of the common areas, there are some safety restrictions. Some common areas that are restricted are the golf courses, maintenance trails, and water retention areas. These areas
Grand Lifestyles | December 2016 | grandinfo.com
may be considered unsafe for recreational walking, jogging, and other activities. Please pay attention to posted signs and keep to trails, sidewalks, and designated recreational areas whenever possible.
Do I Need an Approval? Call the Standards office if you are making modifications to your yard or the outside of your home and are not sure if you need approval. Basically, if it is not covered in your governing documents, you need prior approval. More information is supplied in this article about common requests. Painting Your Home If you are repainting the exterior of your home the existing colors, you do not need to submit an application. If you are looking to change your color scheme to another approved SCG color scheme, please visit the Standards office to fill out an application. We have a book of all the paint schemes in the community so that you may look up your own scheme or even the schemes of some attractive homes you may have admired in the neighborhood. We will check to make sure that your neighbors do not have
FROM THE Community Manager
the same scheme that you have chosen and note that on your ARC application. Interior painting does NOT require any approvals.
Landscape Changes There are only a few landscape changes that may be made without prior approval. The Residential Design Guidelines specify the minimum number and type of plants that are required on each type of lot. Homeowners may have more than the required number, but an application must be made so that the ARC can verify that the plants being added are from the approved list and are planted according to our limitations (i.e. no “hedge borders”). Plan Requests Looking for a copy of your plot plan or landscaping plan? Stop into Standards and enter your request in the sign-in book. We will print them if they are on file and call you when they are ready to be picked up. ARC applications may be downloaded from www.grandinfo.com and are available in the Standards Department in the Palm Center on Remington Drive.
The Standards Department has a “walk up” window for residents. There is a Standards staff member available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to answer questions, assist you with ARC applications, provide copies of plans, and accept Compliance reports (just to name a few). In October we averaged 27 “visits” a day for a Grand total of 569 for the month.

STORY OF CHANUKAH
The eight-day Jewish celebration known as Hanukkah or Chanukah commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend, Jews had risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. Hanukkah, which means “dedication” in Hebrew, begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and usually falls in November or December. When the Jews took part in the rededication of the Second Temple they witnessed what they believe to be a miracle. Even though there was only enough untainted olive oil to keep the menorah’s candles burning for a single day, the flames continued flickering for eight nights, leaving them time to find a fresh supply. This wondrous event inspired Jewish sages to proclaim a yearly eight day festival. For that reason, only one candle is lit on the first night. Two candles are lit on the second night. Three candles are lit on the third night until all eight candles are lit on the last night. Often called the Festival of Lights, the holiday is celebrated with lighting of the Menorah, traditional foods, games and gifts.

FROM THE SOFTBALL CLUB
Bob Ahal Inducted Into
National Senior Softball Hall of Fame Article by Ron Underwood
On September 26, 2016, Bob Ahal was inducted into the National Senior Softball Hall of Fame in a ceremony held in Las Vegas, Nevada during the World Masters Championships. Bob
has been a member of the Sun City Grand Softball Club for 14 years and he joins other softball club players, Ron Danoski (2011) and Jim Douglas (2014), as members of the National Senior Softball Hall of Fame. There are only 19 members in the entire State of Arizona and slightly over 500 in the entire country. It is estimated that there are roughly 1.5 million seniors over the age of 50 now playing softball. The National Senior Softball Hall of Fame was founded in 1995 with the purpose to recognize players who had achieved honors in Senior Softball. All nominees must be a minimum of 60 years old and participate a minimum of 10 years in senior softball.
Another path to the Hall of Fame is available to Pioneers, who must be a minimum of 75 years old. These candidates must meet certain criteria and have a minimum of 10 years of senior softball experience. Bob was inducted this year as Pioneer Player. Bob grew up and lived a good part of his life in Wisconsin. Bob contracted polio at age 11 and was unable to walk for about a month. When he returned to school in the fall, he was to follow doctor orders to refrain from running and physically exerting himself. Bob didn’t listen and managed to recover and again play sports. He loved softball and has played ever since. Bob has played softball his entire adult life and has played senior softball in

ARIZONA BROADWAY THEATRES Looking for an escape from the same old night out? Do you dream of seeing a Broadway Show, but hate the thought of driving a long distance? Look no further! The Arizona Broadway Theatre brings Broadway directly to you here in the West Valley. The only way to explain the magic behind the Arizona Broadway Theatre’s dinner show extravaganza is to experience it first-hand. This jewel of the West Valley not only produces some of the best musicals in the Valley each year, the dining experience coupled with the theatrical event is as magical as the talent that will appear on stage. Arizona Broadway Theatre has produced almost 100 musicals since first opening its doors in 2004. Thanks to a great reputation in the New York City theatre community, ABT has the ability to lure Broadway-level talent to Peoria for the enjoyment of Valley audiences, as illustrated by this season’s Fiddler on the Roof show-stopper, Jason Simon. This nonprofit organization offers a total entertainment experience—a one-ofa-kind venue combining professional theatre and quality dining. ABT’s onsite culinary team creates cuisine to tease the “foodie” hidden in every guest. Menus are show-specific, and patrons enjoy meals cooked especially for them. Standard ticket prices include a twocourse meal of soup or salad and a choice of entrée. Appetizers, meal upgrades, beverages including wine and signature cocktails, and desserts can be added for an additional fee. Add in special events such as this 20
December’s annual Holiday Ladies Who Lunch (a favorite of women’s groups across the area), the recent limited engagement hit Church Basement Ladies, and the upcoming limited engagement Menopause the Musical (February 17 – March 3), and it’s easy to see that ABT has a lot of entertainment to offer.

FROM THE DRAMA AND COMEDY CLUB CLUB
The ariZoni Theatre Awards Submitted by Jolene Nerdahl
The SCG Drama & Comedy Club is a participating theatre for the ariZoni Theatre Awards, a not-for-profit organization devoted to promoting the visibility and growth of theatre in the Valley of the Sun and Maricopa County. Each year at its annual awards ceremony, the ariZoni Board bestows an outstanding contribution award and a distinguished service award to deserving individuals or organizations for their contributions to theatre. In addition, the ariZoni Scholarship Committee will award one or more scholarships to selected, qualified students. Most importantly, after completion of an exhaustive judging process, (involving more than 100 Adjudicators) awards of excellence are presented to those individuals who have excelled in performance and production during the just-completed season, including youth theatre.
Harriet Fusaro, Kate Heiser and Jolene Nerdahl
The SCG Drama Club has received a number of nominations over their many seasons and was awarded an ariZoni for scenic design. The ariZoni Theatre Awards represent a true celebration of EXCELLENCE IN THEATRE. Productions are adjudicated as a play, musical or original work. There are currently 13 categories for adjudication. They include: Awards of excellence for actress and actor in a major role;
actress and actor in a supporting role; directing; musical direction; original script/playwright; choreography; scenic design; costume design; hair and makeup design; light design; and sound design. Finalists are determined in each category based on a percentage scale, and are announced to the public. The ariZoni award recipients’ names are kept secret until the night of the annual gala ceremony when they are read on stage. Judges (Adjudicators) are asked to rate each category based on defined scoring rubrics using a detailed ballot. The ariZoni Executive Committee opened the adjudication process to professionals and other area people with a theatre background. Currently there are three SCG Drama Club members who were selected for this season through an extensive application process. Harriet Fusaro, Kate Heiser and Jolene Nerdahl will adjudicate approximately 12 shows each this season for the ariZoni Awards.

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE
Midwesterners with Charm Barbara Foster Executive Director, The Colonnade 623-236-3700
What descriptors come to mind when you think of Midwesterners? If you’re like most, you probably envision America’s heartland folk as being friendly, down-toearth and helpful. Vince and Judy Albright fit the descriptions darn near to a T. The first thing I noticed when I met the Albrights was their polite manners and genuine warmth. They seemed like the kind of people who would not only give you the shirts off their backs, they’d go home and find you a pair of matching pants too. Vince was born and raised in Chicago. Judy was raised in nearby Lansing, Illinois. Both came from working class families and learned the values of hard work, honesty, modesty and helping those less fortunate. The couple met at a restaurant lounge. Judy was on a girls’ night out and Vince asked her if she wanted to dance. She agreed, and the music and movement worked its charms. They went on a dinner date the next night and found that they had a lot in common, including the fact that both worked in the computer industry. There were some complicating factors. Judy was a divorcee, working fulltime and raising a daughter and a son, then ages five and two. In addition, Judy’s father was living with her. But, love prevailed. Vince and Judy were married six months later, the day after Christmas.
“Vince was a blessing in our lives,” Judy says. “He opened his heart to all of us. I remember how the kids took to him right away.”
She also proved to be skilled at making clients feel listened to and important. “The job gave me a sense of fulfillment and purpose each day,” Judy says.
The Albrights will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary this year.
Vince and Judy both retired in 2000.
Vince was a computer programmer and systems analyst, skills that were in high demand in the business world. A job opportunity came up at Valley National Bank of Arizona (now Chase Bank) in Phoenix and Vince accepted it. The young family moved to the Valley in 1978 and they have been here ever since. Vince’s decades-long career path included working for IBM, Burroughs, Honeywell, and in health care. He finished his career working as an information technology consultant for American Express in Phoenix. Judy was a stay-at-home mom during the early part of their marriage, but she reentered the work force when the children got older. She was hired by a large business law firm based in Phoenix. When a partner from that firm decided to start his own practice, he invited Judy along and she jumped at the chance. The job allowed her to put her organizational talents to good use.
Grand Lifestyles | December 2016 | grandinfo.com
These days, the Albrights enjoy spending time with their daughter and son, both of whom live in Phoenix. They also like to play golf, go on outings planned by the Life Enrichment staff at The Colonnade, and volunteer, especially at their church, Spirit of Grace Lutheran Church in Surprise. Their faith is a source of great strength and comfort for them. Vince expresses their faith simply, saying, “It’s important to know that God is on your side, no matter what happens.” The Albrights lived in several homes in the Valley of the Sun, the last of which was Arizona Traditions, an active adult community in Surprise. Two years ago, they decided to downsize and simplify their lives and they began researching retirement communities. They chose The Colonnade for a variety of reasons. “It’s close to our church. It’s beautiful here. The residents are young in spirit and the employees are fantastic,” Judy says. Vince echoes those feelings. “It’s like being on a cruise, forever.” 23

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER to rid the body of the foreign invaders. It’s like an army that never gets to sleep and rebuild. The constant state of high alert leads to chronic inflammation and the host of diseases Dr. Mark Hyman mentioned above that none of us want. The way I see it, many of us moved to beautiful Sun City Grand to have an active healthy lifestyle. In order to be healthy and active we need to be proactive. Proactive in getting enough exercise, quality sleep, relaxation and yes, nutrition. Did you know that every bite you take is either inflammatory or anti-inflammatory? We have a choice every time we eat to build our defenses or weaken them. Most people have heard of anti-oxidants and omega 3’s, these are two of the compounds that fight inflammation. Anti-oxidants are found in fruits and vegetables. Omega 3’s are found in fish and nuts.
Sun City Grand resident and Certified Integrative Nutrition & Wellness Coach, Melissa DiLuzio writes this month about some of the reasons a healthy gut is part of overall health. Melissa will be presenting at the Health Lecture Series on December 6th at Cimarron.
What do Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease and Cancer have in common? autoimmune disease, allergies, and digestive disorders.”
Allison Adams Fitness Manager 623-546-7463 Allison.Adams@ scgcam.com
By Melissa DiLuzio, CHHC
Just as Charlotte said last month, exercise is medicine for your body. Food is also medicine for your body. Hippocrates said all those years ago “Let food be thy medicine.” How many times have we heard that we need to eat our vegetables or that sugar is bad for us? Science has now proven that our ancestors were right. Food plays a major role in either creating health or creating disease. Dr. Mark Hyman, Director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, and bestselling author, states that “Besides obesity and type 2 diabetes, inflammation contributes to almost every modern disease including heart disease, cancer, and dementia as well as arthritis, 26
Yes, you read that correct, inflammation plays a role in most of the diseases we fight today including cancer. Inflammation is a good thing when we are injured and our body needs to repair the injured tissue. The problem is inflammation can be either acute or chronic. The definition of inflammation is “a condition in which a part of your body becomes red, swollen and painful.” No doubt, many of us have experienced a sprained joint, stuffy nose or have cut ourselves. For the injury or illness to repair itself, we need inflammation. Inflammation is our bodies reaction to the injury or invader. It signals our immune system to come to the rescue, to repair the cut or sprain and battle the invader. However, inflammation should do its job then leave and go rebuild our immune forces for the next time we need them. When we have inflammation that won’t go away, it is called “chronic inflammation.” Chronic inflammation weakens our bodies defense mechanisms because our immune system is constantly on high alert and continuously working
The saying “you are what you eat” has been said many times. This is true, however, what is even more important is “you are what you can digest.” The condition and health of your “gut” is primary in determining the health of your entire body. Did you know that 80% of our immune system is in our gut? Since everything we put in our mouths passes through our gut, it is important to pay attention to what we feed ourselves. Eating clean whole foods nourishes our gut, where eating processed foods high in added sugar and omega 6 fatty acids destroys our gut. Maintaining a healthy balance in our gut is mandatory to keep our immune system operating at its best. If you want to build your immune system, fight inflammation and reduce the chances of getting a chronic debilitating disease, paying attention to your nutrition is a must. Because the majority of our immune system is in our gut, this is where inflammation and disease begin in most cases. Chronic inflammation of your gut or intestinal tract leads to what is called “leaky gut” or intestinal permeability. This is where the food particles you eat leak through the walls of your intestine and end up in your bloodstream. Your body sees the food particles as foreign invaders and signals your immune system to go get rid of them, creating, you guessed it…. inflammation. It is important to keep your gut balanced with both good and bad bacteria. Both types of bacteria are beneficial in different ways. If we have too many of one kind of bacteria versus the other, this creates an imbalance. An
Grand Lifestyles | December 2016 | grandinfo.com
FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER imbalance in your gut is the beginning of the inflammation process. Achieving and maintaining the correct balance is where diet, supplements, medications, lifestyle and stress come into play. Every day we make choices about what we put in our mouth. Are you choosing to build and reinforce your health or are you tearing down your defenses? If you are diligent and feed your body nourishing foods most of the time, then it is okay to splurge occasionally. Personally, I’ve never seen a cookie I didn’t want to
eat! However, I’ve learned to listen to my body and interpret what it tells me after I eat the cookie. Did it make me feel good for more than the 5 seconds it took to eat it, did it upset my stomach, or do I feel energized and healthy? Listening to your body is key to learning how your body reacts to the food we eat. This could be the first step in ridding yourself of those foods that contribute to inflammation in your gut. I tell my clients to “run it through their own filter,” and decide for themselves.
Food is powerful information for your body. It will either strengthen you or weaken you. It is understood now, more than ever before, that everything we put in our mouths influences our health. FROM THE SEWING CLUB
The Art of Working Together! What can you get when you have 12 people working together for 40 hours? Pure beauty!
The spirit of cooperation is alive and well in SCG! When the women in the Chorus purchased new dresses to wear during concerts in 2015-16, the Sewing Club pitched in and hemmed many of these outfits. As a thank you, the Chorus made a donation to the club. This year the Chorus decided new pendants would make the women sparkle for the holiday concert. Purchasing these items was extremely costly. During a brainstorm session in August, a suggestion was made that perhaps the Glass Arts Club would like to pitch in and get involved. Robin Rushton, Glass Arts Secretary, took the idea to other officers, who decided that
if the Chorus supplied the raw materials, Glass Arts would supply the manual labor and kiln work to create the finished product. After experimenting with several designs, both Chorus and Glass Arts liaisons chose a red rectangle to spice up the season. Rushton put out a call for volunteers to help, and twelve members showed up to work for approximately three hours to produce 99 pendants. First the kiln-friendly glass, purchased by the Chorus, was cut with a translucent clear product placed on top of the base red pendant. After being cut, the glass was given to Glass Arts members to grind the edges into a smooth, consistent shape. A quality control group ensured that both clear and colored glass were the same size and that any rough edges were removed. Then the clear glass was tacked onto the red glass, re-inspected, and finally placed in the kiln overnight. When the pendants emerged, liaisons decided to add
Josée-Marie Plant
opalescent «frit,» which is crushed glass, to spice up the pendant›s surface. After returning to the kiln to soften the frit, the final products were examined again and a few rough edges were ground off. More Glass Arts members showed up to attach the silver bales to the pendants which were left to «dry» for two days. Finally, the pendants were placed upon a silver chain. So, if you attend the Grand Singer’s Annual Holiday Concert on Dec. 10 and 11, you will see these pendants shimmering from the stage! All of this was possible because of inter-club cooperation.

YEAR-END REMINDERS
Submitted by BOB RICHARDS C.H.A.P.S. Board Member
Did you know you can lock your garage door when you are away from your house during extended periods? Your wallmounted door control panel inside your garage has a “Lock” button, which when pressed and held for two seconds prevents operation of the door from any hand-held remote control.
1
You can reverse the lock function by pressing and holding the “Lock” button for two seconds, or by using the Outside Keypad if you have that feature on the outside of your house. Locking your garage can be especially useful when away from your house on vacation or while on summer escapes.
2

attached to your car’s front seat visor when outside of your garage? If your door opener is seen by a thief and he steals it along with your car registration address, he may get back to your house before you do, burglarizing you while you are dining, worshipping, or shopping. Hide your garage door opener out of sight when keeping it in your car. Are your address house numbers lighted at night, or are the bulbs burned out? Emergency personnel and also CHAPS evening patrollers need to see your house numbers at night. Check those bulbs now. In addition, are your house numbers clearly read from the street, or are they faded and need to be replaced?
3
Are your tree limbs growing into the city street signs? Evening patrollers travel a prescribed
4
street-by-street route. If your tree is hiding a street sign, please have it trimmed back. Are you uncomfortable opening your front door at night, even if you believe it to be a CHAPS volunteer? You do not have to open your front door at that time. Feel free to talk to us when we ring your door bell by using your intercom panel or talking through your closed security door. Security doors should be kept locked both day and night even when you are at home, and especially so when you are away from your house for any length of time.
5
Do you want to join CHAPS? Come to our next general meeting on January 24 at 1:30 P.M. There is no December meeting. Please join us in 2017.

SCG’s Drama & Comedy Club Present – “Sex Please, We’re Sixty”
A saucy, senior scandal! Hilarious farce! So begin two reviews of “Sex Please, We’re Sixty”. Picture a small town B&B, appealing mostly to “older” women, and three such guests in attendance. Mix in the sex machine neighbor, “Bud the Stud”, or so he fancies himself, and Gentle Henry, infatuated with the proprietress, and we have the makings of a “saucy, senior scandal” and “hilarious farce”. Observe the effects of the yet –to-be-approved “blue pill” on unsuspecting men. Can this be “women’s revenge on men” or simply “role reversal”? Only through your attendance will you discover the answer. $12/person | Dec. 1, 2 &3 7 p.m.; Dec. 4, 3 p.m. | Cash bar 6:30 p.m. | Sonoran Plaza

Grand Summer
Hiking Adventures Submitted by Larry Timmons
Someone once said, “When it comes to age you cannot turn back the clock, but you can wind it up again and exercise is one of the best ways to wind it up.” Sun City Grand Hikers have been winding the clock all summer with hiking club scheduled hikes here at home as well hikes all over the world on their summer travels.
mountain ranges and three national parks. Along the way they met and walked with trekkers from all over the world, crossed beautiful valleys with sheep grazing, and enjoyed the welcome ambiance and charm of many small English Villages. Grand Hiker Doris Benoit is a Sun City Grand snowbird who flies to her summer home in Munich, Germany each summer. She hiked this summer to the top of Sonnjoch, an 8,061 ft. high peak in the Karwendel mountain range of Austria.
Hiking club vice-president John Kiss completed eight days of hiking in the French and Italian Alps with some of his friends and former co-workers from Chicago. They have previously hiked together in the Swiss, French and Italian Alps. This year they took on Mt. Blanc which is the highest mountain in Europe.

Dave & Louise Danskin hiked some of the remote and seldom visited mountain trails in Central British Columbia, Canada. On August 1st they hiked to the top of Browntop Mountain near Cariboo Lake. Getting to the top involves a 4X4 access road to the trailhead, then an uphill trek through the forest before breaking out into the alpine meadows above the tree line.

hiking club maintained a weekly schedule of hikes throughout the summer. These hikes started at 5:30 in the morning to beat the Arizona summer heat or they went north to the cooler climate of Prescott, Sedona, and surrounding areas. Because of the early start times most of the summer hikes were followed by breakfast at a local restaurant. We also had a very popular “swim hike” where we hiked in the nearby White Tank Regional Park and then went to the home of Barb and Bob Sanders for breakfast and a refreshing swim in the Sanders’ pool after the hike. A special thanks to all of the summer hike leaders for planning and leading the summer hikes. For more information about the hiking club check out our website www. scghikers.org or attend one of the club’s monthly meetings. Meetings are held in the Hopi Room of the Chaparral Center at 3:00 p.m. on the first Monday of the month in October through May. Visitors and prospective hikers are always welcome.
For those of you who may have been out of town the past few months, I was appointed by the Surprise City Council to serve the remainder of the term for the District 2 council seat in October. I will be sworn into my new four-year term in January. I have had the great pleasure of meeting so many people in my new role, but for those I haven’t personally met, I’d like to introduce myself. I served on the Glendale Fire Department as a firefighter and EMT for 22 years. Prior to that, I served our country for 20 years in the United States Air Force where I trained pilots with critical skills needed to survive warlike conditions. Like many of the courageous veterans I have met, I am also a Vietnam War veteran. I currently serve as Adjunct Faculty at Glendale Community College, teaching Fire Science and Emergency Medical Technicians, and serve on the city’s Public Safety Retirement Board. I have been a public servant my entire life. To me, it is my vocation. I’ll be writing to you each month to share the latest news and information about this great city we call home. I am available to you at any time. Please feel free to reach out to me at jim.hayden@surpriseaz.gov or call 623.222.1322. You can also sign up to receive my newsletter via email by

clicking the Notify Me button on my website http://d2.surpriseaz.gov. Another great way to find out what’s happening in Surprise is to attend one of my two monthly meetings in which I plan to share city news with you and hear what’s on your mind. On the first Tuesday of each month I host a meeting at 10 a.m. – Noon in Sun City Grand’s Palm Center, in the Mediterranean Room, 19726 N. Remington Drive. On the second Tuesday of the month, my meeting is at 9 a.m. - 10 a.m. in Arizona Traditions, Neighborhood Center, 18265 N. Traditions Loop. We are well into the holiday season and I know you join me in celebrating the opening of the Bell Road Bridge over Grand Avenue! Thank you to the local businesses in that area for your patience and to those of you who continued to shop and support them. Shopping your hometown businesses helps to create jobs and generates sales taxes to pay for police, fire-medical and street maintenance! Although the bridge is open, construction on the overall Bell-Grand project runs through February 2017, so please continue to shop this area. I want to close by wishing all of you a very Happy Holiday Season! This is great time of year when we connect with friends, neighbors and family. I look forward to sharing more great things with you in the New Year! Happy Holidays, Jim Hayden, District 2 Councilmember 65
ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT
ABOUT FACEBOOK Dear Cappie, All 5 of my children have asked me to get on Facebook. They say it is better than email because we can send messages to each other, video chat or call each other on the Facebook app. They said we can also make real time videos to broadcast to family members, buy and sell items in nearby communities (similar to eBay), create public and private events, join Groups (people that have similar interests), share photos, and more. I’m excited to try some of these things but I am fearful about privacy issues. My wife and I are not sure we could actually learn how to do all these things. Sincerely, Jeff and Marie
Dear Jeff and Marie, Cappie understands why your children would like you to engage in this social media app. People around the world use Facebook to stay in contact with family and friends. They share information, private messages (through Facebook’s Messenger App), photos, videos, as well as play games, create specialty pages, specialty groups and events, and share content they’ve found on the Web. Facebook is the largest social networking site in the world, with over 1.79 billion monthly active Facebook users and more signing up every day. Facebook is fairly easy to use and if you adjust your settings properly, you can also ensure your privacy. “Who do I want to see my posts, my status updates and my personal information?” will determine how you set your privacy and safety settings. n As with most social networking sites on the web, you are required to register your name and email address (or mobile phone) and to create a password (at least 6 digits) and a user profile (which can be as minimalist or as complete as you choose and as private or public as you choose). On a computer, go to www.facebook.com to register and if
you are using a mobile device (phone, iPad, or tablet), download the app from Android Market or Apple Store, depending upon which device you have. n You can access the privacy and security settings on a computer by clicking the down triangle to the right of the “Home” button in the top blue horizontal bar, or on your device by clicking on the three blue bars at the bottom of the News Feed. Then scroll to Settings>Security and Privacy. Cappie suggests your privacy default be set to “Friends” or a specific group or groups but not “Public” unless you actually want to post to the world. n You can also use the audienceselector button beneath the status update box to set different sharing/ viewing options for each piece of content you post. n In Settings you have options to set Login alerts (in case someone tries to login as you from a different computer or device), to set your Trusted Contacts, Recognized Devices, and to select a Legacy Contact in the event of your death. n You can set parameters as to who can see your posts, contact you, look you
up, or add posts to your timeline. You can also block certain people from seeing your posts. You can determine who can follow you, determine what kinds of ads you want to see, and so much more. Generally you just scroll down the list and click in the appropriate box to determine the level of privacy you wish. Once you are registered, you can find friends to add, create and join groups (friends, family, work-related, sportsrelated—just about any special interest is there waiting for you). You can find people already connected in those groups, find those connected through outside email contact lists, and also connect with friends of people they know. Many first-time users get confused as to what the various columns, pages and tabs are that comprise the app. Here are a few basic components of Facebook: n Home Page and News Feed — the page you see after logging in which displays a “News Feed” of updates about what your friends are saying and doing as well as
For more information about social media, classes in Windows 10, Mac, and more, visit the Grand Computers Club. The Club is located in the Chaparral Center. If you are a member and have a question about or problem with your computer, tablet, or smartphone, you can talk to a tech volunteer every Tuesday starting at 12:30 p.m.. Bring your device with you. ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT posts with links to stories from the Pages you follow. It is the stream of information/content in the middle column from all your contacts and from the Pages you like. The Home page and its contents are visible only to the owner. n Publisher Box — the blank “status” update box for typing in text updates, sharing Web links and other media: it says “What’s on your mind?” Here is where you can share with family, friends, or the world, your thoughts, videos, photos, and important news or information you came upon while surfing the internet. n Friends — a list of people with whom you’ve connected on FB (either they accepted you or you accepted their friend request). n Profile/Timeline Page — which displays who you are, what you like, what you post, and photos you share. This is the page that everyone sees when they click on your name in FB. n Photos — all the photos and videos
that you upload to your page. They include albums you created as well as Facebook-created albums like mobile uploads, photos of you, videos, timeline photos, cover photos, and more. n Groups — provide a space to communicate about shared interests with certain people. You can create a group for anything from a club to a reunion to a favorite sports team and more — and customize the group’s privacy settings depending on whom you want to join and see. n Messenger (FB’s own private messaging system where you can text, send photos, video, stickers, emojis, gifs, audio messages and more — to people privately as opposed to posting something on their wall which is visible to everyone. n Events — where you can create (or be invited to) a party, dinner, sporting event, etc., and invite fellow Facebook users that you want, as well conveniently keep track of who’s coming and not coming.

Pages — -a public profile specifically created for businesses, brands, celebrities, causes, and other organizations. Unlike personal profiles, pages do not have “friends,” but “fans” - which are people who choose to “like” a page.
There are additional components to the Facebook app and more are added constantly (like the recent Marketplace-where you can buy and sell items online in your area or Live Video—which enables you to video in real time to the world or to specific groups) but the key for any new member is to concentrate on the News Feed (what others are posting about), and the Timeline (what you post). The Facebook app has an excellent “Help Center,” which will answer most questions you might have. If you need additional assistance, the Grand Computers Club has a Social Media Support Group and teaches 4 hour classes on how to set up a Facebook Account and use the app safely.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS
EVENTS DURING OVERSEEDING During the overseeding time frame, there was a plan to have 9 days of no golf available because of the overlap in golf course closures. The overlap occurs because of the best time to overseed the turf. Staff was able to trim the closure dates to just 3 days because of the weather. In order to have some golf activity during this time, staff put on 2 different events.
Glowing the Game of Golf Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations 623-546-7402 jeff.hochman@ scgcam.com
Pros on the Range The first event, Pros on the Range, took place on October 25th from 10-1 at the Granite Falls Driving Range. This is where the Golf Professional Staff walked the range to give free instruction for anyone who wanted to come; and many golfers came. Balls were placed on the range at no charge and golfers were able hit balls to their delight. A Golf Professional would then analyze their swing and give them a few tips on how to improve their game. It was a great to spend time with the residents and to give them some pointers on their game.
The next event, “Glowing the Game of Golf” took place on October 26th beginning at 5:00pm again at the Granite Falls Driving Range. There were 4 hitting stations to try. Two of them were to try and hit a glow in the dark ball into a kiddie pool and another was to try and chip a glow in the dark ball into an 8-inch cup which was a new event this year. Another new addition to this year’s event was the golf simulator. The golfers got to hit a range ball into the darkness and the golf simulator than tracked the shot. The goal was to hit a 50-yard shot into a circle with a diameter of 30 feet. There were almost 250 participants in this challenge with 22 of them getting within the circle.
OPEN HOUSE On November 3rd, the Golf Shop along with the 8 Chartered Golf Clubs (Men’s and Ladies 9/18 hole club, Coed 150 Club, Men’s and Ladies Putters and Couples Putters) held their Grand Golf Open House for the first
68
time. The Chartered Clubs were all on hand to promote their respective clubs and food and drinks were served. We also were playing the classic golf movie, Caddie Shack. These events would not be successful without your participation.
SNACK BAR NEWS The snack bars have increased their menu selection to now include homemade egg salad, marble rye bread, spinach wraps, increased the meat in the sandwiches and now have lettuce and tomato. You can now also preorder your food from the golf courses by calling the following numbers. Desert Springs Snack Bar 623-546-7410 Granite Falls South Snack Bar 623-546-7574 Granite Falls North Snack Bar 623-451-6449 Cimarron Snack Bar 623-975-5626 (Store them in your phone for easy convenience) We appreciate your support and thank you for your business.
