FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS
Golf's New Look
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations
The recently completed modifications at Granite Falls South are important and significant. While the project encompassed a number of course features such as bunkers and irrigation, one modification was particularly extensive and resulted in major change. By providing a number of new tee boxes, the course now offers more variety in course layout distances. 10
It will improve golf at Sun City Grand for years to come. Historically, for those who began playing golf years ago, the game challenged golfers to achieve par or better on all 18 holes of the course. However, the distances were so great that less than 1% of amateur golfers could consistently attain a par score. Players who didn’t meet this distance and accuracy challenge often concluded their game with a score far exceeding par and came to see the score more as a measure of their golfing imperfections. For some golfers, that score above par was simply a challenge to do better on the next round. Many others interpreted their high scores to mean that golf wasn’t a game or sport for them—that golf just wasn’t worth playing even though the camaraderie during the game was wonderful and being in a park-like setting was equally grand. While the act of driving the ball was challenging and even sometimes rewarding, the number of embarrassingly high scores above par were not fun. For example, a study found that 76% of SCG golfers averaged 19 or more strokes over par per game. This high score sent a message to golfers: golf courses need to provide more distance options to accommodate more players. Otherwise, existing players may become discouraged and leave the game, while new players would not be attracted
to a sport that is more punishing than rewarding. Fundamentally, the solution is a function of golf course design.
SUN CITY GRAND GOLF
Traditional course design remained unchanged for more than a century, that is, having one layout for men and another for women, and essentially reinforcing the belief that par was only a dream and not a reality. As SCG courses were being designed in the mid-1990’s, instead of just two tees per hole, an additional two tees were added to each hole, so women had one tee and men three. Additional tee boxes made for slightly shorter hole distances, so the course was more playable for many male golfers and of courses the scores above par came down. Unfortunately, the new tee locations didn’t give women more options. In 2010 our Director of Golf, Jeff Hochman, came forward with a new idea. He created three new course layouts by using nine holes each from two adjacent tees on all four courses. He called them “combo tees.” Later, new orange tees were created on each hole, giving one more option for women and other players who needed or wanted shorter driving distances. The concept behind having additional tees to provide a shorter course layout
Grand Lifestyles | January 2022 | suncitygrand.com
is easy to understand. Multiple tees provide every golfer with a variety of tee locations so that course layouts become more consistent with the golfer’s physical capability. At the same time, careful attention is paid to maintaining official length of the courses in order to comply with industry standards for posting handicaps.
SCG AT THE FOREFRONT
Today, because of the high quality modifications on Granite Falls South, we are celebrating an important expansion of the “multiple tees per hole” concept. This applies to the course layouts for both men and women. The South Course now has essentially 11 course layouts. Thus, the course can now accommodate and challenge a golfer with a driving distance equivalent to the professional
golfer, from the most distant tee location. Alternatively, this same course with different layouts using new tee locations will provide a golfer with a driving distance of 140 yards or less an opportunity for par or bogey golf. The new design allows every golfer an opportunity to play the game as it was intended to be played, with the scoring result based on performance skills and not penalized by artificial driving distances that often ignore differences in physical ability. The addition of tees and shorter course layouts has become a community and national focus for the future of golf. With four courses, one completed and three to be modified in the next two years, SCG is at the forefront of these major changes in golf course design, introducing modifications that accommodate golfers of all ages, skill levels, and physical ability. Our residents
not only have the benefit of playing golf in an exciting new era, but we can be proud that SCG is becoming known for this significant change in golf. Contributed by the Move Forward Team

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER
Lessons for Living Longer Reprinted from IDEA FITNESS JOURNAL SPRINT – DECEMBER 2021
Allison Adams Fitness Manager
People who live in the world’s Blue Zones are living longer. What are they doing to increase longevity? Modern lifestyles—including sedentary behavior and poor eating habits—are a breeding ground for chronic illness. That makes it harder for people in the U.S. to live long and prosper. Yet, there are regions around the globe where pockets of people do appear to be living longer and healthier lives. In these so-called Blue Zones, residents statistically live the longest and produce people ages 90 and above at seemingly extraordinary rates. The specific areas are Okinawa (Japan), Sardinia (Italy), Nicoya (Costa Rica), Ikaria (Greece) and the Seventh-day Adventist religious community in Loma Linda, California (USA) (Buettner 2008). Their patterns of behavior were chronicled by explorer Dan Buettner and a team of anthropologists, demographers and epidemiologists. Buettner 14
describes these patterns in The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest (Buettner 2008) Here Matthew Kadey, MS, RD, James Beard Award–winning journalist, Canada-based dietitian, freelance nutrition writer and recipe developer, summarizes some of the most important patterns and offers suggestions for how you can create your own Blue Zone. DIETS 1PLANT-BASED PREDOMINATE
Diet is an entrance ramp to better health. The average tofulaced menu in Okinawa may differ from what’s on offer in a Costa Rican village, where beans and rice dominate, but Suzanne Dixon, MPH, MS, RDN, a senior medical writer and epidemiologist with Cambia Health Solutions in Portland, Oregon, says a parallel among Blue Zones is that diets are predominantly plant-based. What You Can Do: Focus on minimally processed plants, including vegetables, fruit, legumes and whole grains. Look for ways to add more plants, and slice out some of the meat.
ACTIVITY FILLS 2PHYSICAL THE DAY
Physical activity in all Blue Zone areas involves a consistent flow of natural movements, including those involved in
gardening, pounding corn by hand to make tortillas, practicing tai chi daily and shepherding livestock in the hills. What You Can Do: Get up and move—often! Beyond going hard at the gym, engineer more movement in daily life. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, go for a stroll while talking on the phone, embrace an active hobby (like gardening or bird-watching) and set a timer to signal movement breaks after sitting for more than an hour. DEFINES 3PURPOSE A LONG LIFE
Nicoyans call it plan de vida, and Okinawnas refer to it as ikigai, both of which essentially translate to “a reason to live.” Elders who begin each day with a sense of purpose and fulfillment, while
recognizing how they contribute to their communities, seem to live long lives or, at the very least, feel positive, upbeat and happy. What You Can Do: Find and cling to your purpose. A sense of usefulness can come from something as simple as immersing yourself in a hobby or actively volunteering time to worthy causes. Crafting a personal mission statement can guide the way to living longer. SOCIAL CIRCLES REINFORCE HEALTH Buettner and other researchers have identified social interactions as a major player in Blue Zone longevity (Buettner 2008). The Seventh-day Adventists in Loma Linda live in tightknit communities, while Okinawans have their moai, a social circle meant to provide support during life stressors and reinforce shared healthy behaviors. These communities focus on face-to-face time and not Facebook likes.
What You Can Do: Create an environment that encourages daily socializing with family and friends. Schedule weekly gettogethers with friends, volunteer for a cause that forces interaction with others or join a sports league that involves group play. And find ways to enjoy more of your meals in good company.
ATMOSPHERIC TEMPERATURE DURING SEASONAL CHANGES
Every year during the spring and fall season I receive a number of emails asking about the temperature of the air in the indoor pool. During the seasonal changes temperatures can swing 40 degrees in either direction from morning to night. The room itself is surround on 3 sides with windows. The sliding entry doors allow lobby air to enter the indoor pool area, and the exhaust fans on the roof, to remove moisture, pull existing heated/cooled air outside. The system for managing the air temperature in the indoor pool are evaporative coolers on the roof. All this is to say that to keep a consistent temperature mean at all times during the fluctuating seasons is a challenge. We monitor the thermostats weekly and do our best to adjust it when necessary to get as close to the desire temperatures as possible.

What is “Brand”? Why are the Long Range Planning (LRP) committee and CAM studying our brand? What’s the benefit to our community?
BRAND REFRESHER
All of us encounter brands every day. What is a “brand”? It’s a name. It comes with an identity or “look and feel”. And most importantly, it conveys an experience and value.
what’s expected and on trend? • Is our infrastructure keeping pace with today and looking to tomorrow’s needs? There are clear messages from the research that indicate what’s important to a Grand lifestyle / brand experience. Our community ranked the following as “top pursuits” – all very active: • Sports • Health and wellness • Entertainment • Intellectual • Outdoor adventure
Here’s a quick example. In the world of cars, there are BMWs and there are Teslas. Both are luxury vehicles. However, the BMW brand conveys a high performance “driving machine” while the Tesla brand is known as an “innovative” electric car. These brand names convey very different experiences. Other brands that set an expectation for what you’ll “experience” – Apple is different from Microsoft. Target is different from Macy’s. McDonalds is different from Chic-Fil-A. The list goes on and on.
The top ranked features for the “future of the community” were: • Quality of amenities (vs. quantity) • Strong financial position • Reasonable annual dues • Beauty and care of the community (including landscaping) • Community leadership that embraces continuous improvement
What’s important about brands? In today's rapidly changing marketplace, a brand can: • Stand out and attract attention • Inspire loyalty and trust • Differentiate it from others in its field – thus, enabling it to retain premium value Our Brand / The Research Says . . . So, what does all this have to do with OUR community? Why are LRP and CAM looking at brand issues? What was the purpose of the recent brand research? Brands need to stay relevant to their intended audience. Brands such as Sears, Wards, PanAm, Borders, Pontiac, and others – at one time strong, iconic brands – are now extinct, indicating what can happen when entities ignore the future. In our case, our brand needs to be relevant to current residents and prospective buyers. Our community began almost a quarter century ago. Since then, think how much we’ve changed personally and how the world has evolved. So, do our name and the experience (lifestyle) delivered here still 16
Many residents – especially younger ones – also indicated that our brand name should be updated to better reflect our active lifestyle and the future. In other words, while life here is “grand,” the “Sun City” part didn’t resonate and seems “old.” meet and exceed our community’s and new prospects’ expectations? That’s why we held 4 research focus groups in June and conducted a community-wide survey in August – to better understand the current state of the Sun City Grand brand. It’s also why LRP and CAM are assessing external trends. Some of the key brand questions explored in the research: • Is our brand relevant for the next generation? • Does our brand draw strong prospects? • Are the amenities keeping up with
Brand Recommendation to the Board Rawle-Murdy, our brand consultant, presented recommendations (based on the research and on external trend analysis) to the Board on November 11 at their regular meeting and again via a Town Hall on November 16. Their viewpoint is that our brand personality is: • Fun, Outgoing, Welcoming, Genuine, Lighthearted They proposed that our brand promise is that “we live Grand” – in other words, “grand” is not just an adjective, it’s how we
Grand Lifestyles | January 2022 | suncitygrand.com
live. It reflects our positive values – staying active, embracing wellness, trying new things, and doing what we love. They recommended that our external messaging should be based on a strong brand position: “We are the most robust, thriving active adult community in Phoenix, AZ’s metro area.” What’s the proof for those key characteristics? • Thriving: Well-rounded, engaged community. Long-term value. Financial stability. • Robust: 17,000+ residents. Breadth of amenities. Range of clubs and activities. Day- to-day value. And finally, they recommended that we simplify and refresh our brand name to “The Grand” – recognizing the significance of our history while pivoting to a fresh future. As part of the rationale for their proposal, Rawle-Murdy also showed data that the Sun City name hasn't been used on any builds anywhere in the country since 2007 (about the time Sun City Festival began.) They are now branding all new
communities with unique names. On December 9, the Board discussed the brand recommendation with interested parties from the community on their regular Zoom call. A few key points that were covered: • Costs: The incremental cost for the brand refresh will be minor - primarily updating entrance signs. Most brand changes would be made as part of regular business updates covered by operational budgets - for example, using up current stationery and then moving to the new brand, incorporating the new brand in ongoing technology updates, etc. • History: In the 2016, as part of the 2016-2025 strategic plan, forwardthinking Board leaders at that time asked for the brand to be reviewed in about 5-6 years - which is when the current brand work started. These leaders recognized the importance of keeping the brand relevant to current residents while attracting new buyers. • Strategic Decision: The final decision for branding lies with the Board. They
#1 Top Producer! Full-Time REALTOR® I Live, Work & Play in Sun City Grand Multiple Club Sponsor Multi-Million Dollar Producer Long Realty Circle of Excellence Award
will base their decision on the research conducted in our community (over 2,600 residents provided input, which is statistically significant) as well as external trend information. They were voted in to represent the best interests of the whole community, and they are committed to do so. • Brand Relevance for Future Buyers: Homes in our community are selling quickly now, but this is also true across the country. More and more active adult community (AAC) competitors are entering the fast-growing market in Phoenix - and they are targeting future, younger buyers with new amenities and simplified brands. Our community needs to “tell our own story” about how grand life is here - and to do it, with a relevant brand. Doing so will help keep our home values high and attract new buyers that want the grand lifestyle we all enjoy. Next Steps The Board will make key decisions on the brand and has charged the Long Range Planning advisory committee to continue work on a potential rollout plan.

LEARNING THE SCG COMMUNITY
Happy New Year from your volunteer neighbors at C.H.A.P.S.*!
Article submitted by: Dennis Hanscom, C.H.A.P.S. member
Shortly after my move to Sun City Grand 8 years ago I ventured out for short drives around Grand to learn a bit more about my new community. On my short drives I made this discovery about the naming of some of the roads: I learned that Clearview became Mountain View; Limestone became Estrella Vista which became Monteverde; Saddle Ridge became Sandia Park; to the west of Sunrise the road was named Goldwater Canyon and to the east of Sunrise the road was named Goldwater Ridge; and Calistoga Dr. became Desert Light Dr. which became Parra Dr. which became Alameda Dr. Whew! Initially, I was content with knowing the locations of Cimarron, and the Adobe. And, of course, restaurant locations out on the Autobahn also known as Bell Road. One evening about a month after my move I had a man at my door telling me I had left my garage door open. He identified himself as being from C.H.A.P.S. and gave me a brief synopsis of what C.H.A.P.S. was about and invited me to come to one of their meetings.
It was during my attendance at that meeting that I decided joining C.H.A.P.S. would be a great way to learn my new community and make a few new acquaintances. After all they were only asking that I serve two 2-hour shifts per month and I could choose which days I was available to serve.
C.H.A.P.S. is a volunteer organization made up of approximately 140 residents. C.H.A.P.S. two main functions are Evening Patrol and Vacation Watch. Very briefly we check for open garage doors and street lights that are out when out on Evening Patrol, and we monitor vacated homes whereas we do walk arounds to check for unlocked doors, and unlocked windows when we are out performing Vacation Watch in the morning hours. We always go out in teams of two and drive the vehicles provided by CAM. Those two processes are explained more in depth in previous and future publications. Our next meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the Sonoran Plaza on January 25th. You are welcome to attend to learn more about C.H.A.P.S. Do you know how many times W. Encantada Dr. changes names? Join C.H.A.P.S. and you will know in no time.
WE NEED YOU! Like any volunteer organization we are always looking for new people to step in and help us keep this much needed service running smoothly. Being a member is an excellent way to learn this community. And, a great way to meet new people and develop friendships along the way. Call Danielle Amato (CAM) 623-546-7539 or the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us! We will put you on our list and someone will contact you to provide info as to when training sessions will be provided.

GUYS AND DOLLS— A MUSICAL FABLE OF BROADWAY
Music & Lyrics by Frank Loesser; Book by Abe Burrows & Jo Swerling. Guys and Dolls is based on a story & characters by Damon Runyon and is about a couple of big-city gamblers and the women who love them. It tells overlapping stories of a high roller, who falls in love with a mission worker, and a lovable rapscallion, who has been engaged 14 years to a headliner at the Hot Box Club and runs a famous floating crap game. An ongoing plotline involves the quest for a safe place for the crap game; as the headliner continues her quest to get married. Meanwhile, the mission worker mistakenly believes that the high roller

Ned Newley doesn’t even want to be Governor. He’s terrified of public speaking; his poll numbers are impressively bad. To his ever-supportive Chief of Staff, Ned seems destined to fail. But a political consultant sees things differently – Ned might be the worst candidate to ever run for office. Unless the public is looking for just that… the worst candidate to ever run for office. Adding to this satire are a professional pollster whose view of politics is a series of contests to be won; the Governor’s executive assistant who has the air of a politician about her; and a TV reporter and cameraman who round out this interesting cast. A timely and hilarious comedy that skewers politics and celebrates democracy. $20/pp | Five Shows: Thursday & Friday | 6:00pm Cash Bar | 7pm Performance| Sonoran Plaza Main Stage Saturday | 12:30pm & 6:00pm Cash Bar | 1:30om and 7pm Performance | Sonoran Plaza Main Stage Sunday | 2:00pm Cash Bar | 3pm Performance Sonoran Plaza Main Stage

THE MUSIC CLUB'S CIMARRON NIGHTCLUB PRESENTS: JOEY JEWEL
Straight From the Biggest Venues in Seattle and beyond, with Tributes to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop and More. First time in the Grand, Joey Jewell normally performs on big stages backed up by a full orchestra, but he’ll be in the Phoenix area and we’re lucky to be able to have him on our Nightclub stage. As a solo performer, you won’t be disappointed. This is a swingin' time trip back to the Las Vegas Strip days when Sinatra and the Rat Pack ruled. Joey’s performance is true to the incomparable phrasing and vocal texture of Frank Sinatra and friends. He’s got the energy and excitement to bring wonderfully smooth and sophisticated arrangements. The show is smart, funny, and a wonderful tribute to the lost art of livin' it up. Open Table Seating - first come, first seated. (Please be seated by 6:45 p.m.) Only Dry Snacks Allowed. Event Coordinator: Didi Nielsen 623-5834406. Tickets may also be purchased at the SCG Activities Desk (M-F, 8 am - 4 pm). $20/pp | Saturday & Sunday | 6 p.m. Cash Bar 7 p.m. Performance | Cimarron Center

HEARING LOSS
DR. EDELITA JAMIS
Meets 1 time on Thur 1/20 12:00 PM–1:30 PM
FEE: $10
According to the CDC 2017 data, cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. Only 5% of cancers are genetic, meaning it is passed on. On the other hand, 95% of all cancers are due to environmental factors, which we can obviously choose not to be exposed to. Even if you are in the 5% having cancer genes, your genetic code for cancer still has to be expressed to produce the disease/cancer. Lifestyle medicine operates under the assumption that "genes load the gun, lifestyle pulls the trigger". You have a chance to win the fight against cancer, before or even after it starts.

He was deliberate in all of his actions. He was thoughtful and always mindful of being fair to everyone he dealt with. He was very aware that he was the living example of the concept of precedent in all that he did as a president. What a great first executive.

"A house built on sand cannot stand." Our national home, the United States of America, is not built on sand. It is built on the bedrock of our Constitution, withstanding the storms of politics, abused and misused, even civil war. Many try to emulate it, none succeed in every aspect. It remains unique. This course is not about the current conflicts among political parties or angry adherents for one side or the other. It is about a document which has stood the test of time and conflict. It makes us who we are as a nation. It defines American culture. My hope is that this little narrative nugget will capture the attention of those truly interested in this historic document.

GRAND REPUBLICANS INTEREST GROUP
Our November meeting was very successful as we presented four speakers discussing Critical Race Theory. A lively question and answer period followed the presentations. I am sure we all came away with a better understanding of the issues involved. With the 2022 Primary season months away we are presenting each month, for your information, a roundtable discussion with questions and answers for the Republican candidates running in 2022. Our January meeting is scheduled for January 15. Coffee and donuts at 9:00 am. The meeting starts promptly at 9:30, in the Apache room here in Sun City Grand. Our guest speakers are the candidates for Governor, Kimberly Yee and Karrin Taylor Robson. In addition, we will also present the Secretary of State candidates, Shawna Bolick and Mark Finchem. All candidates will speak on their qualifications and reasons for running. As always, a Q & A session will follow. Our Board members for 2022 will be sworn in by Governor Jan Brewer, the 22nd Governor of the State

We invite all independent and conservative folks to attend our next meeting to hear the Republican candidates for Governor and Secretary of State present their positions. We just may be the group you have been looking for.
SOUND & LIGHTING
Volunteers needed to keep the grand’s entertainment “best in class” The Sun City Grand Music Club and Drama and Comedy Club justifiably receive accolades for the many fine musical, dramatic and comedy shows that they bring to our stages each year. But it’s true for any live entertainment venue – the shows are only as good as the sound and lighting teams make them. We are currently looking for residents who want to practice their existing skills or learn new ones for the upcoming season starting in the Fall 2021. And the best part is absolutely no prior experience or knowledge is required. We will train anyone who is interested in learning the lighting and sound systems. With the many performances we are planning well into 2022, and the different roles each require, there will be much need for more trained technical people. This is a great way to learn some new skills and become a member of the Grand’s entertainment team. If you have ever wanted to be a part of Live Theater, this is your opportunity. Now that we are returning to a full schedule of performances, the need is even greater for more people to join our lighting and sound teams. For more information, contact Larry Dirksen – 623-3635040 (Sound); or Bob Nix – 623-214-8280 (Lighting)

Friendly Reminder From Standards We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

Truck Noise Noise pollution is a concern that is often shared by residents of Sun City Grand. Sometimes these concerns are in regard to cars on Bell Road, vehicles with modified exhaust systems or even truck traffic on SR303. This noise can be especially disruptive at night or in the 58
early morning hours, as there is less overall ambient noise in the community during these times and sounds travel further. Our Surprise police department enforces traffic laws including prohibitions on speeding, racing and modified exhaust systems on city streets, such as Bell and Sunrise Boulevard. We rely on the Arizona Department of Public Safety to patrol and enforce state laws on highways such as SR303 and US-60/ Grand Avenue. One of the most common questions received is in regards to air brake use by large trucks. Because large trucks are largely regulated and governed by Federal law which preempts local and state laws, implementing and enforcing local bans on air brake use is difficult. Local laws also usually include their own exemptions, such as the use of air brakes being allowed when necessary to avoid an accident. This exemption by itself makes enforcement very challenging. The City
of Surprise understands and appreciates the noise pollution concerns that have been shared and will continue to coordinate with our state law enforcement partners to address and mitigate this issue where possible.
