FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Kenneth Olson, CMCA, AMS General Manager

Nearly all the Board Appointed Committees in Sun City Grand are now placed with candidates except for a few committees and they will be sending out another call for candidates in the near future. Being part of a committee can be a valuable experience in many ways. You can share your expertise, learn about issues affecting our community and gain governance experience – a boon if you’d like to become a community leader. In addition, you will work collaboratively with CAM staff and other committee members, get to know your neighbors and make a difference for your fellow homeowners. Committees are designed to assist the Board of Directors by making recommendations on important issues and providing recommendations that serve our community. Typical areas of focus may include repairs and maintenance, social programming, buildings and grounds, communication and more. 10

Qualities of an Effective Committee Member Committees deliver many rewards, both in creating a stronger community and providing members with rewarding experiences. But if you’re concerned you may not have what it takes to add value to a committee, consider this: there are no specific requirements. The benefits an individual can bring to a committee are often as unique as the individuals and committees themselves – and for that matter, as unique as Sun City Grand itself. It’s true that there are no one-size-fits-all requirements to become a committee member; but even so, it’s not for everyone. Serving on a committee is a group effort that demands time, dedication, and the ability to collaborate and reach consensus with others. Those are all qualities that may be a good fit for your lifestyle or temperament – or not. Homeowners with experience or skill sets in a particular area, like accounting or finance, insurance, community elections, or an

interest in a specific issue affecting their community, such as the governing documents, amenities or recreation, etc. can be very helpful and effective members of an association committee. Owners who participate on a committee are often driven by a community spirit and many owners take great pride and ownership in helping to make a difference in their community, enhance the lifestyle of their fellow residents and protect the interests of everyone’s investment. In fact, serving on a committee is a terrific breeding ground for becoming a Board member, both are volunteer positions with a shared sense of responsibility and representation. Other good committee candidates are often those who recently moved into the community. New residents can bring an outsider’s perspective and fresh ideas, and at the same time, serving on a committee is a great opportunity to meet your neighbors and make new friends.

In addition, if you have leadership capabilities or experience, as well as the ability to nurture a collaborative and supportive team, you can leverage those

skills to become a successful committee chair. But along with interest, passion and experience, it’s also important to consider whether you have enough bandwidth to devote to serving on a committee – after all, business or personal responsibilities often take up many people’s available free time.

FROM THE COMMUNITY MANAGER

Grand Lifestyle Kym Stutzman Community Manager

If you haven’t yet noticed, here at Sun City Grand we are all about lifestyle. There have been some subtle changes over the last three years – the community magazine is called Grand Lifestyles and the Activities Department is run by the Lifestyles Manager. But the big changes are the notable increase in programming and technology to improve your style of living. Whether you attend the social events meant to enhance resident living in Grand or participate in wellness programs to promote a healthier lifestyle, you need not even leave your community to enhance your way of life.

Monthly Activity Breakdown

In January, there were twelve ticketed events onsite. We also extended our Farmer’s Market and Vendor Fair schedule and kicked off the very popular Wine Down Wednesdays. This event involves, fun, food trucks, and professional musicians. Our own Grand Learning offered 108 classes to our residents on a wide variety of topics. We introduced online voting to simplify your life (and save you postage!) 12

by offering voting with a simple click on your desktop, laptop, or mobile device. The fitness centers entertained 60,000 visits to the pools and workout equipment. The woodshop (have you ever visited?) was expanded to further accommodate those who have a passion for building and creating. Moving in to February, we saw 97 homes sold to new residents eager to join in the lifestyle here at Grand. Almost 3500 tickets were sold for 13 Association events (not even including tickets sold for Chartered Club events). Wine Down Wednesday attendance grew so large we had to order more tables and chairs to accommodate those wanting to join in the fun. The golf refund policy was gratefully utilized by nine individuals who were prevented from using the golf courses by an unexpected life event. We opened 10 beautiful new pickleball courts, as this fast growing sport became quite a staple in the Grand lifestyle. To further assist the residents as they enjoy the amenities of their community, GPS trail markers were added to the dog park, fishing pier, and various sports courts. This was an extension of the system on all of our handicapped accessible trails throughout the community. These allow our residents to be quickly and accurately located in the event they suffer any type of health or wellness emergency. We are believed to be the first HOA in Arizona to have such a system. Then March ushered in our Spring Break season. March is usually one of

the busiest months at SCG and this year was no exception. 74,000 people attended our fitness and aquatic centers and a record 101 new residents/families decided to call Grand home. Wine Down Wednesday attendance topped 500, keeping the Activities and Custodial Departments extra busy serving the residents. Food service was added at the pools – this was a great new lifestyle enhancement that was wildly popular (expect to see it back!). The Golf Department, under the leadership of Jeff Hochman, went out of its way to add new features for our golfers. They sponsored a very well attended “Putt, Chip, and Sip” event, added new snack bar items, and introduced a new exclusive offering. PING selected Sun City Grand as the location for their fitting services. Now, instead of a long drive to an indoor facility to be fitted for new clubs, residents can hop in their golf carts and meet with Grand Lifestyles | June 2017 | grandinfo.com

FROM THE COMMUNITY MANAGER the experts on the driving range for a personal fitting. Then, you may order or purchase your new clubs at the Pro Shop just steps away. The expanded Arts and Crafts Faire was a huge success. The addition of more vendors, food, and entertainment brought residents out in droves. The Spring Fashion show was a fun event that catered to the ladies and their love for shopping (without the crowds offsite). April was here in a flash. Ice cream sales (our $1 ice cream cone is legendary in the West Valley) hit $35,000 year to date, attendance at our fitness centers remained strong at 62,000 and the average age of our new buyers was 68. The Activities Department under Lorena Nieto brought you a whopping 16 ticketed events and added two unscheduled Wine Down Wednesdays because you said you didn’t want them to end! The Activities Department teamed up with the Golf Department for a Drive in movie on the range. This event far exceeded our expectations with more than 500 residents showing up for an outdoor movie and munchies. Another popular lifestyle perk that was extended into April as well, was the poolside food, snack, and beverage service. You asked and the answer was “yes!” Our Garage Sale and Car Show events were very well attended and we always appreciate the feedback we get about continuing these Grand favorites. The free Skin Cancer Screenings that Allison Adams brought onsite were in such high demand that additional doctors and dates had to be added to accommodate all who wanted to take part. We continued with bringing the party to the Palm Center by

having our Wild West night. Great food cooked onsite in a HUGE smoker, music, photo booth and more. These “ticket only” events in a fresh venue have really added to the lifestyle of the residents here at Grand.

Standards Department

Even the Standards Department joined in on the Lifestyle fun. Did you know that they receive nominations and name a “Grand Home of the Month” each month? A photo of the chosen home is displayed in a frame in the Standards reception room for the full month. Two brand new (you heard it here first) features now being offered to enhance the lifestyle in Grand involve the exterior paint schemes for the residences. When the Board approved the revised Design Guidelines in February of this year, they allowed all homeowners to choose from all 42 paint schemes in SCG instead of being limited to your series only. To facilitate this fresh look for the neighborhoods, we have partnered with Dunn Edwards to provide two new services to make your life easier. First is a website where you can view all of the color packages for Sun City Grand from the comfort of your home or mobile device. You can view the paint schemes, painting guidelines, and even get the approved paint colors for your fences and mailboxes as well. Remember, any paint change at all requires an application, but repainting identical colors is just maintenance and does not require submission of an ARC application. Then, the truly exciting part is that you can also take a photo of your home and bring it into your local Surprise Dunn Edwards store (appointment strongly

recommended) to try out different paint schemes on your home (with your roof and hardscaping) before you choose a new look for your home. It is quite an investment, so why not be sure? Not to worry, you may still use Sherwin Williams (color names available in the Standards office) or any other paint provider such as Home Depot, Lowes, or True Value (paints would have to be custom mixed).

The Fun Will Continue

So, not to disappoint, we also kept the party rolling through May. Hopefully you played in the pool at the Splash Party, attended a free movie (with equally free popcorn) in the cool air conditioning, danced to the festive music for Cinco de Mayo or any one of the other events that make your lifestyle here so special. As this magazine goes to press, we haven’t had our first Rise and Shine breakfast in the Village center for me to report in on. But based on the popularity of Wine Down Wednesday, I’m sure you all welcomed yet another opportunity to be surrounded by friends and neighbors amongst the waterfalls with soft music and delicious breakfast fare. We also look forward to the new cardio fitness equipment that was approved at the May Board meeting. We had a presentation at a Board chat and this state of the art equipment will be another jewel in the crown of this fantastic community. Last but not least, we await the renovation of the Chaparral Center, bringing a fresh look to the building that will also make Sun City Grand a sought after retirement destination.

WHAT’S NEW FOR THE

SUMMER AND FALL? Working together we will be updating our Covenants, Conditions & Restrictions (CC&Rs) and Bylaws during the last half of 2017. The Sun City Grand Homeowners Association (HOA) has governing documents that we live by.

Meetings held with clubs, special interest groups, and neighborhood representatives. n Programs on Grand TV. n

When we bought our homes, you may recall that we were given a set of these documents. These developercentric documents were created by the Del Webb Corporation for its benefit more than 20 years ago. They remain in effect today, and will continue to do so until we update them. To keep everyone fully informed of the progress of this project, there will be: n Town hall meetings where homeowners can attend and ask questions.

Working together homeowners will have the opportunity to “consent” to the proposed updates that will be homeowner-centric and protect our interests and our community. We strongly encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity. Articles in Grand Lifestyles magazines. n Emails sent to homeowners. n Flyers and handouts distributed throughout our community. n

Watch for numerous upcoming communication programs that will be presented to you over the summer and fall. Read the materials. Attend the meetings. Get your questions answered. Be prepared to give your “consent”.

2017 SCG Masters Swimmers Medal at Nationals By: Anne Martin

Masters Team is even more impressive.

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:30-10 a.m., rain or shine, hot or cold weather, the Sun City Grand masters Swim Club can be found training in the outdoor Adobe pool under the watchful eye of Coach Frank Eissing. Evidently they reaped the rewards of this hard work at the 2017 U.S. Masters Swimming Spring National Championship held at the Riverside Aquatics Complex in Riverside, California on April 27-30. The meet alone is newsworthy. 247 teams were represented; 2016 swimmers entered with 8429 individual event splashes and 788 relay event splashes; ages 1895 were represented; medals presented 1st through 10th places. Given those statistics, the success of the SCG

Richard LeRoy (75-79 group) earned gold and silver. LeRoy took 1st in 50 backstroke; 2nd in 100 backstroke; 2nd in 200 backstroke (with his best time in 8 yrs. of 3:12); 1st in 500 free style; 2nd in 200 free style. He was chosen to join two relay teams consisting of strong Arizona swimmers and earned 1st in 200 free relay and 1st in IM relay (with LeRoy nailing the backstroke lap). LeRoy claims, “I would not have become a competitive Master swimmer without Frank Eissing. Eleven years of good workouts and patient instruction by Frank are a huge part of my personal success”. He went on to say that part of what he likes about the SCG masters team is his being with a dedicated

to swimming, joining Masters in 2012. “Frank is the only coach I have ever had in swimming, and I thought I knew how to swim until I met Frank”!

Pam Speer (65-69 group) returned from a successful performance also. Pam claimed 10th place in the 100 breast stroke; 9th place in 200 IM; 8th place in 50 breast stroke; 8th place in 200 breast stroke and 7th place in the 400 individual medley (IM). She too joined relays where her results were: 2nd in 200 freestyle; 2nd in 200 medley; 9th in 200 Freestyle; and 7th in 200 medley.

Then there is Sandie McTavish (60-64 group). Sandie arrived on deck last fall, here on a short term visa from Canada, where she swims with the London (Ontario) Silver Dophins. As a master swimmer, she is entitled to work out with other master’s teams, and she was an inspiring member for everyone in the pool. She earned personal best records in all her events in California and claimed 3rd in 200 breast stroke, 9th in 100 breast stroke, and 5th in 200 individual medley.

With her recent records of success, it is difficult to believe Pam is relatively new

“I have learned more from Frank than any other coach I’ve ever had. He certainly was a big help in my attaining personal bests”! Team members were quoted as saying they hoped she could extend her visa! In this meet, 22 former Olympians competed, one 80 years old. Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte set the national record in the 100 IM in the 30-34 age group. These competitors were in good company with the Sun City Grand masters Swim Team. “In practice we work on balance, rhythm, and momentum. Obviously that hard work paid off for Richard, Pam, and Sandie,” stated Coach Frank.

OdySea Aquarium Nine huge globes suspended from the ceiling teeming with fish captivate the moment you enter the lobby. The exhibits officially begin upstairs, but go to the restrooms first—both the men and women’s restrooms feature viewing windows into the shark tank. Then, head upstairs to the exhibits. The experience at OdySea is designed to be linear, from the small fish that inhabit local lakes and streams, then rainforest exhibits, then the oceans. The pathways are clearly marked; gentle blue light outlines the floor. The atmosphere is largely tranquil but the cavernous setting and concrete surfaces amplify the squeals of eager littles. If auditory stimulation is an issue, plan accordingly. We found most of the exhibits easily accessible. Large risers are placed in front of exhibit windows, but staff are quick to move them aside to accommodate wheelchair users. There were two areas where we found no easy

solution: the large otter enclosure has a huge window for underwater viewing. However, the otters spend much of their time on land viewed through an elevated area requiring a step with no alternatives. The pools with the stingrays and starfish were equally inaccessible for those unable to lean over the walls. Animal ambassadors including a sloth, macaw, and more often appear for human interaction, especially in places where lines begin to form to help pass the wait time. There are plenty of places to rest and enjoy the exhibits containing roughly 40,000 animals. Along the way, the 3D theater holds 300 people in stadium seating and wide aisles for wheelchair users. We enjoyed “Underwater Giants,” a 10-minute film on whales. Later, the Living Sea Carousel, a rotating theater that can accommodate five wheelchair users in each section, takes a 20-minute

ride around several screens and exhibits. Neither have closed captions but scripts are available in advance so those who cannot hear the narration can read it or have it read to them. Visitors leave the upper level and descend into the oceans via an escalator encased in an acrylic tube. The mood is enhanced by ethereal music and ocean sounds as sharks and rays glide overhead. Those who must take the elevator ride in silence past schools of fish painted on the walls.Do plan on spending some time in the Great Barrier Reef tunnel; it’s as close as you can get to being inside the exhibit yet stay dry. Entry times are scheduled for a smoother guest experience. Buy your tickets online before you go to minimize your wait time. Plan 2-3 hours to see all the exhibits.

Fundraiser to

lf

Contributed By: Kathy Fuller Grand Ladies Golf Association 2017 Benefit Chairperson

On March 21st, 145 members of the Grand Ladies Golf Association came together at Desert Springs Golf course to participate in a fundraiser to benefit the Dysart High School Girl’s Golf Team. The members purchased raffle tickets, donated gently used golf equipment and paid for the opportunity to participate in a Skills Challenge event. During their round of golf, players’ skills were tested with a sand bunker and putting challenge, held off the course, and a long drive and closest to the pin challenge, on the course. At the end of the day player’s scores were posted and winners in each flight were named. It was a fun day filled with laughs for all players. Money was raised for the continued development of quality golfing equipment for the Dysart Girl’s Golf Team. The golf professional staff of Kevin Reagan, Tyler Kintz, Brayden Barnish and Jeff Hochman helped make this event a success by supporting the Ladies 18 with course and challenge site setup as well as scoring. In 2015, Kevin Reagan, Senior Head Golf Professional, reached out to the Dysart High School athletics’ coach to see if they needed a home course where the Girl’s Golf Team could practice during the high

school golf season. The women of the Grand Ladies Golf Association stepped up and started donating their used equipment to help build an inventory of equipment for the team. The team started with 3 girls and is now at 9 players and growing. On Tuesday, April 18th, in the early morning hours, the Grand Lady Golfers gathered, before their round of golf, to present the Dysart High School Girl’s Golf Team with a Pro Shop gift card in the amount of $2,400.00. Dysart Coach, Kyle Simpson, and the Dysart Girl’s Golf Team accepted the gift card. The presentation was also attended by Tyrus Timbrooks, Assistant Principal/

Artist in Residence Bill Johnston Contributed by: Denna O’Connell SCG Resident

When Bill Johnston was 4, he lived with his Grandmother, who fixed meals for an elderly gentleman who lived across the street from them. Bill’s Grandmother would sit at the table making sure the old man ate. A year later the old gentleman died and left that unusual vase to Bill, who has since carried it with

him wherever he has landed, even college. That is a long stretch from seeing this vase as a young boy, and creating the beautifully creative work Bill Johnston does today, but this vase was the beginning of Bill’s interest in pottery, even though it was nearly 65 years later that he actually got involved in the medium. His chance at trying this medium himself came only after he was a resident at SCG when a friend from California, who was visiting

and who happened to be a Raku artist, “dared” him to try clay. He joined the club on that dare and has never looked back. Bill tells how handling the clay offers him relaxation, a chance to be creative, and a release from whatever is going on in his life at the moment. Not caring for the “wheel”, Bill creates his pieces by hand building. Sometimes his original idea becomes something he never expected when he finishes the piece. He believes the clay does a lot of the creating and he does the building. When you look at the photos of Bill’s work, you might notice the lack of glaze and the huge amounts 22

of texture, which is what Bill enjoys the most. The large platter shows a mixture of types of clay which give the plate its unique coloring - no glaze was used. The photo of the cactus-looking piece was one of Bill’s earliest pieces that he still likes. It is a mixture of glazes and stains. Some of his other pieces use mixed mediums of reeds, ropes, stains, glazes and other clays; they are all very unique and beautiful. Probably the most important message Bill relates is that the Clubs at SCG are more than just “hobby” clubs. He does not like the term “hobby” because he thinks it relates to retirement as in trying

Grand Lifestyles | June 2017 | grandinfo.com

to find something to do to fill your time. He sees the Clay Club as a life changing opportunity, a place to have fun in a new way, and as a way of making new friends. According to Bill, he believes Clay Arts has given him an experience he never expected the day he took the dare from his friend. The commraderie, the support, and the

creativity is amazing. It is an opportunity to give back. Bill’s philosophy is that “We need the Clubs and the Clubs need us”. Bill believes that if you are not good at one thing, try something else or another way of doing that same thing. He loves watching others work and learning from what they

create. It opens up a whole new world for him and he thinks others should try it too, not as a way of “filling” your day in retirement, but as a new experience that could well change your life as it did his.

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE

FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH

IS PAST ITS PRIME the average resident age is increasing at the rate of approximately 6 months every year. In 2010, the average age was 68.26 years. In 2015 the average age was 70.87 and in 2025, the average resident is projected to be around 76 years young. Barbara Foster Executive Director, The Colonnade 623-236-3700

The 16th-century Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León may never have found the mythical Fountain of Youth (he did, however, discover Florida, which some would argue is the next best thing) but that hasn’t deterred other explorers, entrepreneurs and more than a few crackpots from searching for that elusive fountain ever since. The billion-dollar anti-aging industry is just one example of our enduring quest to find a wellspring of eternal youth, or at least something to trip up the aging process. Who among us hasn’t looked in the mirror on countless occasions and grumbled how we’re aging right before our very eyes, eyes that most likely need glasses or contact lens to see anything clearly. Whether it’s graying hair, no hair, duffle bags under the eyes, or crepey skin, the list of physical attributes in decline keeps growing, like a thicket of wild hairs you often find in the ears of men 65 and up. If we don’t dwell enough on our own ageinduced flaws, there are daily reminders from a variety of sources that we’re not as young as we used to be. A recent report showed that right here in Sun City Grand, 24

The local “graying” trend mirrors what’s going on across the United States. According to a recent report from the Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration on Aging, the population of those aged 65 or more years, at 47.8 million in 2015, is expected to more than double to 98 million in 2060. This is great news for the anti-aging industry but what about those of us who want to make the most of our so-called golden years. I wish I could tell you I had a GPS map straight to the Fountain of Youth, but that would be engaging in youthful fantasy. My antidote to aging is much simpler and it’s free to all who are willing to put it into practice. I’m speaking of making and keeping social connections. A growing body of research shows that social interaction and social support are critically important to our physical and mental well-being, even more so as we age. “Connection matters. When we are isolated, when we are subjectively lonely, that actually puts us in a stress state because that’s not how our body was built to operate,” former U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said at a recent conference. “That stress can have a lot of the adverse effects.” Participating in social activities such as taking a class is a great way to counter the negative effects of loneliness and isolation.

A review of studies that examined programs that connect older adults found the most effective programs were those that had an educational or training component. Programs included: n

Art classes

n

Writing classes

n

Health-related Classes such as nutrition or weigh management

n

Computer training

n

Exercise classes

Volunteering is another rewarding activity. Volunteers can offer communities their time, wisdom and experience while simultaneously contributing to their own health and well-being. If you live in Sun City Grand or here at The Colonnade, you are presented with a wealth of opportunities to get and stay connected. I know that sometimes you’d rather just stay home and relax. That’s OK in moderation but don’t let it become a habit. So stop searching for the Fountain of Youth. It’s all around you. Drink it in, even in small sips, and you will be forever young. moved in last week. I just got the last of my moving boxes out of our garage this morning. I parked my car in the neighbor’s driveway at the house you’re at to make it appear that they were still at home.”

True story. In April my wife and I were doing a Vacation Watch house inspection. We saw a car in the driveway at our inspection house where the residents were supposedly away. We got out of our CAM vehicle and heard someone yell out from across the street, “Hey, what are you doing there?” Then some big guy in a U.S. Marine ball cap comes over to us to see what’s going on. “We’re C.H.A.P.S.”, I respond. PERONAL SAFETY TIP: Keep your garage door closed . . . all the way down . . . day and night.

Our next C.H.A.P.S. general meeting is Tuesday, June 27, at 1:30 in the Sonoran Plaza. You are invited to join us.

After many discussions, City Manager Bob Wingenroth presented his Recommended Budget which is scheduled for approval this month. These budgets discussions marked my first as an elected official in Surprise. With that being said, maintaining current services and protecting our residents is my priority. When I reflect on the protection of our residents, public safety comes to mind. One of the key aspects of public safety is to save lives and protect property. In order to accomplish this, we need to ensure our response times to these incidents are more than sufficient. As an elected official, I have an obligation to the citizens of the city to make sure we can adequately protect our residents in the event emergency and fire services are needed. Having spent most of my career with the Glendale Fire Department, I focus on response times. When lives and property are at risk, every second of the emergency response cycle counts. Response to medical emergencies is constantly evolving. Science is becoming more and more sophisticated. The more we learn, the more it changes. Paramedicine has certainly contributed to quicker and more efficient responses as has telemedicine. For example, telemedicine utilizes technology that has significantly changed how EMS providers perform care. Ambulances and fire apparatuses can now carry advanced 42

diagnostic equipment that has become more portable and more affordable. EKG monitors perform and transmit 12-leads, record vital signs, and measure carbon dioxide levels in expired air and carbon monoxide levels in blood. Even with all of the enhancements listed above, response times and resource management remains a complex part of service delivery. The time of day, street networks and traffic planning are all items that have a large impact on the response times. The City of Surprise currently has seven fire stations, all of which provide for Advanced Life Support (ALS) via Fire Engines and Ladder Trucks. This delivery model has proven to be very effective and ensures that the crews are always ready for whatever call comes up. All trucks are equipped with GPS devices that report their location to the Phoenix Fire dispatch center. Phoenix Fire is then able to determine the closest unit to the call and sends them to help reduce response times. This process ensures all resources are being used in the most efficient manner. Unfortunately, if there are multiple or stacked calls for service in a specific areas of the city, units are sent over to help cover those calls. This situation is what causes response times to become extended. Here is an example: If a call for service comes out in the southeast corner of the city, currently there is no fire station there to cover that call. This call is routed to the

closest unit; a majority of the time this is Fire Station (FS) 305, near Surprise Stadium. When FS305 gets that call their area is left uncovered. Any call for service in that area is now served by neighboring fire stations such as Fire Station 306 located at 16645 W. Clearview Boulevard. This means that the response to a current call in Fire Station 305’s first due will be extended. In addition, any call that takes place in Fire Station 306’s first due while they are out will also be extended because it is being back filled with a unit outside of that area. The Surprise Fire Medical Department (SFMD) has a goal to be at your door step within 6 minutes of the call for service 90% of the time. With this goal in mind you can see why calls for service in uncovered areas can cause the entire system to underperform. According to the American Heart Association, every minute after cardiac arrest and no advanced care (AED & CPR), the chance of survival decreases by 10%. After 10 minutes the chances of survival is very poor. Surprise continues to grow which means more demand on all of our services, including public safety. It is imperative that we continue to serve our residents adequately and ensure their safety is our first and foremost concern. Grand Lifestyles | June 2017 | grandinfo.com

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT

NEW BASIC SOFTWARE Dear Cappie, My daughter told me that Microsoft is coming out with a new computer/operating system that would be perfect for me because I mostly send emails, play games, and look up information. Do you know anything more about it? Sincerely, Theresa Dear Theresa, Microsoft did indeed come out with the latest version of the Windows operating system (and inexpensive laptops to run the new OS) called Windows 10 S. It should be available in stores on or about June15. This version is geared toward the education market but also good for people who do just basic tasks on their laptops (email, social media, web searches, etc.). According to Microsoft, it is a lighter version of Windows 10 which essentially means it does not have all the features of other versions of Windows, but it is also less expensive. It is comparable to what you would find in an inexpensive Google Chromebook that runs the Chrome Operating System--which is a Chrome web browser and Android apps you can run within the browser-- except in this case, it is a Windows version OS (running Microsoft apps). One benefit of having Windows 10 S is better battery life. For example, the new Windows Surface Laptop will get approximately

14.5 hours of battery life, exceptionally high for a 13.5inch touchscreen laptop. In addition, Windows 10 S is built on Windows 10 Pro OS, so you will get full disk encryption, which some versions of the Home Edition of Windows 10 do not currently offer. The downside to this new Windows version is you will only be able to download and install software from the Microsoft Store, including programs and other add-ons you use with your programs. While that could be limiting for some users, many people will get their needs met with the programs they get from the store. You’ll find Microsoft Office, Adobe Reader, photo editing software, limited games, etc. It is comparable to how you get apps for your iPhone or Android phone-- being able to download apps only from the Apple App Store or Google Play. The theory is that by managing all software, including updates, through the Microsoft Store, Windows 10 S can better control your laptop’s resources and security.

It has also been reported that you will not be able to change your default search provider from Microsoft’s Bing but you will be able to connect to google.com (using Bing) to use Google search. Windows 10 S will run any browser in the Windows Store, so if, in the future, Google is willing to add the Chrome browser to the Microsoft Store, then it will be available on devices that run Windows 10 S. Otherwise, you will be compelled to use the Edge browser for now. If you find that using apps purchased only from the Microsoft store is too restrictive and you decide you want to run software that isn’t just from the Microsoft Store, Microsoft will offer an upgrade option—for a fee. In other words, if you find that the limitations of this new OS are not meeting your needs, and you bought one of the laptops that cost less than $200, you will have to pay a fee to upgrade to full Windows 10 Pro version. For more expensive models of laptops, the switch was

reported to be free. As stated earlier, this OS and hardware is geared to the education market. With that in mind, Microsoft has changed how the login process works on Windows 10 S. It will take around 15 seconds to be ready for a user to log in and use for the first time--faster than what’s currently available on Windows 10 Pro. Other improvements include the ability to set up machines using a USB drive with preconfigured options. Windows 10 S will detect the key and customize all settings to make it ready for the educational setting. Devices will start at $189, and all machines will ship with a free subscription to Minecraft: Education Edition. Windows 10 S will also be free for all schools that are currently running Windows 10 Pro PCs, and include free Office 365 for use with Microsoft Teams (the chat-based collaboration tool). If you are in the market to buy a new, inexpensive laptop, this might just be the right choice for you.

Special thanks to SCG resident Steve for taking this great photo of his very handsome ten-year-old Labradoodle, named Preston. Sago Palm The Sago Palm (Cycas revolute) is a cycad and not a palm all. It dates back to prehistoric times. The common names are Sago Palm and King Sago. It is one of the easiest plants to grow indoors or outdoors. This plant prefers well drained soil and does not require much water. This palm does like regular fertilizer feeding and removal of the dying fronds to look its best. They will tolerate low light conditions but will not handle too much moisture. Water the Sago similar to a Cactus and you will not experience root rot or yellowing fronds. The Sago Palm is relatively slow to grow

and have been known to reach up to 20 feet tall. To grow to this height would take 50 to 100 years.

Processed starch known as sago is made from this and other cycads. It is a lesscommon food source for the people from the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Sago is extracted from the sago cycad by cutting the pith from the stem, roots, and seeds. It is then ground into course flour, before being dried, pounded, and soaked. The starch is then washed repeatedly to leach out the toxins. The starchy residue is then dried and cooked.
