FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

A Night to Remember... Kenneth Olson, CMCA, AMS General Manager

The evening of August 2, 2018 will be remembered as one of the worst storms in our community history. A storm of this magnitude can be measured in dollars with the loss of trees, damage to common areas and damage to residents’ homes and personal property, but thankfully no injuries have been reported. We have experienced some turbulent monsoon weather this season counting four storms of note that have caused damage in our community. We hope the remainder of the monsoon season is calmer and we simply receive much needed rain. There was damage to several homes, buildings, fences, and walls; we are still receiving information regarding the damage. Desert Springs Golf Course lost over 20 trees. Cimarron Golf Course lost over 90 trees. Granite Falls North and South Golf Course lost about 300 trees. Certain residential areas around the Bell Road entrance were severely hit by the storm and had significant damage to roofs and structures from falling trees and strong winds. The storm of August 2 alone caused severe damage to about 890 trees and coupled with the other storms the count is now over 1000.

The Association, in conjunction with Gothic Landscaping, has been working diligently to remove trees first on the main roads and rights of way throughout the community. A member of the Gothic executive team arrived shortly after the storm to assist the General Manager and the Management Representative in putting together a game plan for the

massive cleanup before us. Gothic sent in two additional arbor crews from out of state and equipment in addition to local workers so we have the manpower needed to clean up both the debris and remove trees from streets, sidewalks, common areas and the four golf courses. The work crews are removing approximately 60 trees per day. We would anticipate cleanup work (tree, branch, and debris removal) to last well into September. Following the cleanup, there will be a few weeks of stump grinding and root ball removal. We have tree crews working on the golf courses and will start clearing trees from the trail system the week of August 20. There was electrical damage to some of the golf course irrigation controllers from the storm. The landscape staff was able to repair them and get them back working in a few days.

CONVERSATION WITH KEN

The Conversation with Ken session provides a good opportunity for homeowners to bring questions to the General Manager and engage in discussion in a casual format. September’s Conversation with Ken is cancelled. Next Conversation with Ken will be held October 17th at 6 p.m. in the Palm Center. 8

Grand Lifestyles | September 2018 | grandinfo.com

The falling trees also caused irrigation damage. We have asked Gothic to send in two additional irrigation technicians to help make the repairs in the common areas and especially at the golf courses. We estimate that in two months we will be ready for the "Beautification Phase" of the project where we begin planting new trees. We have contacted local tree growers to find out what is available that is hardy (wind resistant), requires low maintenance and water, and colorful. They recommended several trees that are readily available and are grown here in Arizona. All the growers recommended we "not" replant the Palo Verde (all varieties especially the Desert Museum or hybrid) or Acacia Salicina because they break easily in the wind. Since many homeowners also lost trees in their yards we are conducting a Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, September 11 at 9:30 a.m. in the Sagebrush Ballroom in the Sonoran Plaza to display tree options for their yards. We are also preparing a slide presentation at the August 30 Board of Directors Workshop; it will include photos of the damage involving homes, common area, and the golf courses. The storm changed some of the topography of our community but the new trees will give many areas a beautiful makeover. We want to thank you for your patience and understanding during this entire process!

FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

SPACE ALLOCATION UPDATE The Hultsman Report: Where Do We Go From Here?

Ellie Brooks Board President, SCG

The survey report recently completed by Dr. Wendy Hultsman provided some useful information regarding the current status of our community. But how can we leverage that information to actually improve our community going forward? One of the key issues identified in the Hultsman Report was SPACE ALLOCATION. There seems to be a general consensus that we may not have sufficient physical space in our community to accommodate the needs and wants of our residents. We have a limited number of buildings with a limited number of rooms. Can we use this space more efficiently? Have we perhaps outgrown our facilities? Do we have options? Can we introduce more games, clubs or interest groups? Following recommendations in the Hultsman Report, our Board of Directors has taken action to address these and other questions by forming

a SPACE ALLOCATION study, led by a Core Team: 6 Sub-committee Chairmen and 3 Board Members. Earlier this year, over 70 residents answered the call to volunteer a portion of their time to work on these subcommittees. In completing this study, there will be a variety of activities, including surveys, interviews, and field trips to other Active Adult Communities in order to be able to formulate proposals to the Board on how to address these issues. Clubs will be visited. Neighborhoods will see these volunteers out there asking questions. This will all take place over approximately the next 5 months, all designed to enhance our community. Look for email blasts, emails from your neighborhood reps, your club officers and more articles in the Grand Lifestyles for updates on all this activity. The meetings of the Core Team for this project will be announced in advance and are open to residents. You are encouraged to attend and make your preferences known!

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS

Why Are You Changing Out The Grass When The Courses Look So Good? mean and why do we do it?” is often a question that we get asked.

Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations

It is hard to believe that the fall overseeding practice is just around the corner (October). “What does this

The base grass on all four of the golf courses here at Sun City Grand is bermuda. Bermuda grass thrives in the hotter more humid months but not as well in the cooler months. Because of this, the courses put down over 225,000 pounds of grass seed. This brings the darker green color/aesthetics back while the bermuda grass becomes

dormant and golden brown in color. As in previous years, staff may alter our overseeding closure dates to allow a better chance to have better weather during the overseeding process which will in turn give better playing conditions for our golfers. The tentative schedule is posted on www. grandinfo.com under the Grand Golf/Calendars tab. The schedule is subject to change based on the current weather forecasts. As in years past, the golf courses will be cart path only for about three weeks after they open back up from overseeding. The purpose for this is to allow the young rye grass to get an opportunity to become more rigorous to be able to handle the upcoming cart traffic, play and divots. Everyone can help keep the courses in great shape by filling their divots with sand and repairing their ball marks on the greens.

On a shotgun day, if you can take a few minutes on your last hole of play and fill as many divots as you can, this will keep our courses in great shape for the golfers behind you. Another question staff gets is, “Why do we not put seed in the divot sand?” About ten years ago, staff conducted a test with seed in the mixture and without seed. We made some several divots similar in length, width and depth. We applied both of the mixtures to the divots. We found that the divots both filled in within the same time frame. The seed needs to maintain moisture in order for it to germinate and since it does not get constant water, it takes longer. We found that the healthy rye grass tillers out just as fast and fills in the divots. Also, by not using seed in the mixture kept rye grass from germinating in the non-overseeded areas.

Dear SCG Homeowner: After three years of work by residents and several town hall meetings, the long-term process of revising the documents is complete. In October 2018, CONSENT forms will be available to you as a Sun City Grand future of our homeowner to secure the community. The main impact of the changes reviewed in the August Grand Lifestyles is to: n Remove any references to the Del Webb Corporation in the governing documents.

WHY CONSENTING TO THE UPDATED CC&Rs AND BYLAWS IS IMPORTANT TO YOU

We are the owners of Sun City Grand. n Reduce the length of the documents by 50%. n Ensure the documents are up-to-date in compliance with Arizona law. n Eliminate harmful provisions in our 22-year old documents; add efficient provisions to improve day-to-day operations in the community. n Enhance the quality of life for Sun City Grand homeowners.

Your CONSENT is very important because the consent of two-thirds of Sun City Grand homeowners is needed in order for these updated documents to take effect.

Tuesday, February 5

If Mumford and Sons hung out with the Dixie Chicks ‘plus one’ at an Eagles Concert, you’d have the Redhead Express. What genre is Redhead Express? Every band is asked the same question, meant to define them, categorize them, to place them in a small box, neatly beside other similar musicians. Certainly their early study of mountain music along with their acoustic instruments suggests an American Folk influence. However, vocal influences are quite varied, reaching into Jazz, Blues, Rock, Pop and both early and modern Country Music. Some refer to Redhead Express as Folk-Rock or Folk-Pop while others like the Alternative Country label.

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER

Weathering the Storm summer day, with little breeze to quell the heat. This burst tossed pool furniture into the water and damaged a few umbrellas that have since been repaired Allison Adams Fitness Manager

With the highly active monsoon season here in Surprise this year, we’ve had to endure the results of high winds. Although recent storms have caused widespread damage around our community, I would like to focus specifically on the SCG outdoor pools. In July, a microburst descended upon the Cimarron outdoor pool. This was on a typical steamy hot

The Association has received feedback expressing concern about the risk of pool umbrellas coming loose during windy weather, asking how we can mitigate these risks. The umbrellas around the pool are secured to the ground by two methods. One method is to secure umbrellas with above ground bolted stands. This method has been used to better secure the umbrellas mounted in tables at the pool. The original umbrellas are placed in deck inserts constructed when the decks were first poured. Within

these holes, a locking mechanism is built in to secure the umbrellas to the ground. The last storm caused an umbrella to rotate in the sleeve and subsequently was lifted out by the extreme circulating winds. Although this securing method is the industry standard, we have decided to use the ground bolted stand method to more adequately secure umbrellas to the deck for greater stability and safety. Monsoon season and other volatile storms offer a particular challenge when it comes to the safety of our residents. CAM continues to employ the most appropriate strategies to ensure the safety and enjoyment of our members and their guests.

FORWARD EVOLUTION

The voting period for the Board of Directors election begins January 23 and ends February 12, 2019. During that period, if your primary card-holder has an e-mail address on file with Membership, you will be invited to vote electronically with a unique code that ensures your anonymity. It will then be scanned and sent electronically to the Tabulator.

The process for the Board of Directors’ election next year has evolved. Each month we will be introducing you to those changes. We think you will find the new process helpful and more streamlined. 16

If you do neither during that period, there will be one last chance to vote. On February 12, you can vote in-person between 9am and noon at the Computer Club location. Computer Club and Election Team members will be on hand to assist. You can vote electronically or by paper ballot. On February 13th, a Reception will be held for the Candidates everyone is invited. Early Spanish missionaries built adobe chapels and missions throughout Mexico, which at the time included Southern Arizona. We’ll begin this Mission and Church Tour, with a beautiful example of this architecture— Mission San Xavier del Bac, once part of the chain of churches that stretched from northern Mexico to the western United States. This amazing structure is considered the “Sistine Chapel of North America” for the intricate paintings on the walls and ceiling. It is still a Catholic parish serving the Tohono O’odham community for whom it was established in the late 1600’s. Today San Xavier del Bac hosts daily nonsectarian tours led by well-trained docents, each with their own unique perspective on this Mission. After this fascinating tour of San Xavier del Bac, we’ll

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE

About Exercise and Aging Here are five myths about exercise and aging. MYTH 1: There’s no point in exercising. I’m going to get old anyway

April Styles

Fitness Coordinator of The Colonnade, a Life Care Community in Sun City Grand

Starting or maintaining an exercise routine is challenging at any age. But older adults may face special hurdles. Perhaps you’re discouraged by health problems or worried about injuries or falls. Or, if you haven’t been active in a while, you may not know where to begin. You may think exercise is boring and of limited value. These are all valid concerns but in almost every instance the benefits of exercise far outweigh the risks or the sweat involved. Study after study has shown that exercise — even a modest amount — can boost mood, relieve stress, reduce pain and lower the risk of health problems that mostly affect older individuals. The good news is that it’s never too late. It’s about adding more movement and activity to your life, even in small ways. Whether you already are in good health, dealing with chronic health issues, or somewhere in between, there are many ways to get moving today and to keep on moving toward good health. 24

FACT: Regular exercise can help you look and feel younger and stay active longer. And, it lowers your risk for a variety of diseases, including Alzheimer’s and related dementias, heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, high blood pressure and obesity. Results from long-term studies such as the Framingham Heart Study, the Nurses' Health Study, and others have shown that regular exercise, along with a healthy diet, not smoking, and keeping blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar under control can prevent three-quarters or more of these chronic conditions. MYTH 2: Older adults shouldn’t exercise. They should save their strength FACT: Research shows that a sedentary lifestyle is unhealthy, particularly for adults over 50. Inactivity can lead to decreased flexibility and mobility, which can trigger a host of health problems. MYTH 3: Exercise increases the risk of falling FACT: Exercises that build strength and stamina prevent bone loss and improve balance actually lower your risk of falling. MYTH 4: It’s too late FACT: Sure. It might be too late to become an Olympic athlete but it’s never too late to move more, which over time will help you feel better overall.

MYTH 5: I don’t have the time to exercise and when I do it hurts Not having enough time and joint pain, fatigue, or a chronic health condition are the two top reasons older adults give for being sedentary. FACT: You’ve heard or read it a million times. Exercise improves health but many people say they don’t have time really because they don’t want to do it. Oftentimes people don’t want to “exercise” because they think it must be physically exhausting to be effective. That’s a myth. You’d be surprised to see how much of a workout you can get from exercising while sitting in a chair. You can lift weights, stretch and do chair aerobics to increase range of motion, improve muscle tone and promote heart health. Studies show the value of even moderate exercise to reduce pain significantly. Just be sure you check with your doctor before beginning an exercise routine. As famed basketball coach John Wooden was fond of saying: “Do not let what you cannot do, interfere with what you can do.”

SCG RESIDENT OF THE MONTH

Pam & Les Dace Nominated, Submitted and Written by: Dr. Wendell Fountain SCG Resident

Inventors & Visionaries Though my wife Grace and I have not lived here nearly as long as our across the street neighbors, Pam & Les Dace, who originally came here from Colorado in 2002, we feel honored to have such distinguished and accomplished SCG neighbors. They are truly wonderful people who have contributed greatly to the health and well-being of everyone who might need

rapid response rehabilitation services here in the Grand and across the country. Interestingly, not long after moving to Sun City Grand, Pam and Less discovered that many patients at Del Webb had difficult rehabilitation experiences with hip or knee replacements. Those observations sparked an interest in doing something good and worthwhile for others. In fact, Les told us that it was highly probable that most of us would need rehab assistance at some point in our lives. After many trials and tests, they finally designed and patented

Secure Tracks is now installed in 15 hospitals and rehabilitation centers, including many in Arizona. Since 2010, the Del Webb Banner Hospital has treated more than 3,000 rehab patients with Secure Tracks. What sets this methodology apart from other protocols is the facilitation of blood flow more rapidly and— most importantly—safety. A patient cannot injure themselves in the rehab process, because of the harness and device which secures them. The tracks are firmly attached to the ceiling which allows for safety. Even if a patient should pass out, they will not fall. They will be slowly and gently lowered into a wheelchair. Our initial reaction to this

incredible invention and story was excitement and glee because we know of quite a number of people here in the Grand who can be helped immensely by this visionary invention. Any of us who have had to go through an ambulatory rehabilitation process would have loved to have had the benefit of this wonderful medical device. My wife, Grace, and I want to ensure that all members of our community are aware of this very special treatment protocol. I suggest that anyone interested in this fascinating method of rehab should visit SecureTracks. com online to truly appreciate this excellent device. The Website is incredibly informative. You will be amazed at how well this system works. Impressive to say the least!

NOTE Anyone is eligible to nominate someone who they feel has accomplished a lot in Sun City Grand. It can be a hobby, a craft, or making an impact in the community. Nomination forms are available at the Activites office, and completed nominations need to be submitted to the Activites office by the 10th of the month. DOG DAYS OF SUMMER

Article submitted by:

There are forms available at grandinfo. com and also in the membership office at the Palm Center on Remington.

Dennis Hanscom C.H.A.P.S. Member

Ahh, yes, the “dog days of summer” are upon us. That is a quote we often times hear while watching our favorite baseball teams perform in the days after the mid-summer classic known as the All-Star game. The announcers also refer to the players having to “grind it out” during these “dog days”. The members of the volunteer group of C.H.A.P.S. also can relate to “grinding it out” during these “dog days” of our summer months of heat, heat, and more heat.

WEEDS Friendly Reminder from Standards

We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list.Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

28

We pride ourselves in the commitment it takes to get up at 6 a.m. to carry out the duties of a segment of our group known as Vacation Watch patrollers. By the time we have walked around 20 to 30 homes in 100 degree heat to check for unlocked doors and windows it becomes commonplace to think of a cool down reward. This patroller often times thinks of only one thing: Oh, to be a kid again and be able to run through that first inviting sprinkler. But, as someone shared the other day, heading off to your favorite grocery store for iced coffee and donuts after serving your community for a couple of hours isn’t a bad reward either. If you are one of the lucky ones that were able to escape for the summer without taking advantage of the C.H.A.P.S. Vacation Watch program keep us in mind for your next vacation.

The other segment of our C.H.A.P.S. group is called Evening Patrol. Due to the fact that Grand is comprised of 9,800 homes it would be impossible to drive by every home each evening we are out on patrol. Therefore, Grand is divided into 6 zones. Each patrol group consisting of 2 patrollers covers one zone. We stop at the homes with open garage doors, we report street lights that are out, and we report any suspicious activity to the Surprise police. During these hot summer months it is not uncommon to spot a few garage doors that are open a couple of feet to let the heat out. If the outside temps were cooler than the interior garage heat that idea would be a winner. Once the sun goes down we also see people out walking their dogs that have left their garage doors open. We recommend closing of the garage doors even when you ae simply walking around the block. In 2001, our C.H.A.P.S. organization was formed as a means to provide an extra element of safety for our community. We are now approximately 140 members strong, and can always use more volunteers to help keep Sun City Grand a most desirable community in which to live. Our group meets the 4th Tuesday of each month at the Sonoran Plaza. You are invited to attend one of our meetings to learn more about C.H.A.P.S.

THE VALUE OF GIVING BACK Dave Martin is a Sun City Grand resident who served our country and now is serving in our community. He has resided here in Grand with his wife, Jo, since 2016. Dave was drafted into the US Army in 1970 and was stationed in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division. During his one year tour in Vietnam, Dave was able to persevere through many challenges that were presented while working together as a team and forming genuine friendships. After his honorable discharge from the Army, Dave attended the Ohio State University and graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. He also worked part time for a local civil engineering firm in a work/study program and later accepted a full time position with that firm following graduation. In 1979, Dave moved to Tucson, AZ to continue his professional career in Land Development. While employed with a regional consulting engineering

30

firm, Dave had the distinct privilege and pleasure of working with the Del Webb staff to design and manage the Del Webb Sun City Vistoso Community in Oro Valley, AZ, just northwest of Tucson. In his role as the project manager, Dave was responsible for the complete site layout, platting and civil design for this 1,000 acre master planned active adult community. With retirement approaching, Dave and Jo chose Sun City Grand to call home because it is a community with resort style amenities and lifestyle along with the Del Webb quality of home construction, their reputation and theme: ‘We offer a place to belong’. Dave was selected to the sub-committee of the Architectural Review Committee last year and was recently appointed to the Long Range Planning

Committee to offer his past experience with planning the future of Sun City Grand. He will provide as-needed assistance in the renovation and remodel of the Cimarron Center along with addressing the future needs of Grand to get the best value for our investments. Among his other interests, Dave is a member of the

Softball Club and enjoys workouts at the fitness center, playing golf & tennis, glass arts projects and collecting football and baseball sports trading cards. Grand has so much to offer; it is truly the ‘Premier Active Adult Community’ but we have many challenges facing us to maintain our ‘WOW’ image and reputation.

Grand Hikers Make Memories in Palm Springs More than 1,200 miles of hiking trails are located within a 70-mile radius of Palms Springs in Southern California, so it was only a matter of time before the Sun City Grand Hiking Club scheduled a trip there.

sections of the Pacific Crest Trail, which extends 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada. In addition to stunning views of the San Bernadino and San Jacinto Mountain Ranges, members enjoyed close up sightings of big horn sheep and long horn cattle.

During trip planning, organizer Dot Agather consulted with Phil Ferranti, the recognized local expert on hiking in the Palm Springs area and the author of the best selling book “140 Great Hikes in and Near Palm Springs. Research and planning included pre-hikes by several club members in late 2017, developing into a remarkable schedule of eleven hikes over four days in late February. The hikes ranged in difficulty from easy to strenuous.

Day two hikes took place in Indian Canyons which consists of Palm Canyon, Andreas Canyon, and Murray Canyon. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Indian Canyons is the ancestral home of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. The largest collection of California Fan Palms in the world can be found here. This magnificent tree is the only palm tree native to western North America.

On the first day, three hikes were scheduled in the Whitewater Preserve. This is one of fifteen preserves that constitute the largest nature preserve system in California, established and maintained by the Wildlands Conservancy. The hikes sampled

The third day included a moderate hike on the Araby Trail which starts in a residential area and skirts just behind the 23,000 square foot Bob Hope House, an iconic Palm Springs landmark which sold for $13 million in 2016. The hike offered great views

of Palm Springs, the Coachella Valley, and the San Gorgonio Pass Wind Farm. On the same day, two groups drove about 40 miles southeast of Palm Springs to hike in the Mecca Hills area where the topography resembles a lunar landscape. The hiking trails lie in the San Andreas Fault Zone. The easy hike took place in Utah Canyon, named for its resemblance to the colorful canyons of southern Utah with its brilliant rocks and

their way through Painted Canyon, Ladder Canyon, and the Big Split Rock Canyon that claustrophobic individuals should avoid. Both hikes offer spectacular views of the Salton Sea, the largest lake in California at 350 square miles. It was created by overflow from the Colorado River in the early 1900s. On the way home on the final day, two groups stopped at Joshua Tree National Park to hike the Lost Palm Oasis Trail. The trailhead is near the Cottonwood Visitor Center located in the southern part of the park. One group hiked to the overlook of the oasis while the other group descended

narrow winding passages. On the difficult trails, numerous ladders and ropes helped the hikers make

to the palms to relish the shade and enjoy a snack before heading back. The famed Joshua Trees for which the park is named are located between the West and North entrances. More time would be needed to fully explore this park which covers an area bigger than Rhode Island. In addition to out of town hikes like Palm Springs, Grand Hikers offer an extensive menu of over 150 local day hikes annually. Grand residents interested in hiking and wanting to find out more should visit scghikers.org and are welcome at monthly member meetings held 3 p.m. first Mondays October through May at Cimarron.

Watch your canvas come to life just by analyzing the interesting designs you come up with. GRAND LEARNING Information and Registration at 623-546-7470 or grandlearning.org IT WON’T BE LONG NOW! Grand Learning has been busy this summer planning for our Fall semester. We will be repeating the success of last year’s Open House and distributing our Fall catalogs on September 24 at 10 am. Look for a chance to meet some of our instructors, visit with old friends, and make a few new ones while you have a few snacks. Registration will start on October 1 at 9 am…for both online and “in person.” If you don’t remember your password (you only use it twice a year!) this is the time to go online (grandlearning.org) and reset it or give us a call and we’ll help you out over the phone. It only takes a couple of minutes. You know there are classes that will fill quickly, so be sure you are READY to go!

SOME NEW INSTRUCTORS We have a dozen new instructors this semester…let me tell you a bit about them… We are lucky to have Dr. Zhudi Jasser, a nationally known speaker, coming to present. He is a cardiologist, and a former Air Force pilot who is a Muslim and has some thoughts about the polemic concepts that presents. His talk is called: How to Engage Muslims and Approach the Global Threat of Jihadism and is sure to be thought provoking. Another nationally known speaker we are bringing to you is Dr. Lynn Kitei. You may have heard of the Phoenix Lights – well, she saw them. She has done research into the possible explanations for this phenomenon and will share her experiences and ideas with us. We have Chef Freddy Sanger who will treat you to a meal as he tells you about the many possibilities of flavored oils and vinegars. We’ll supply the food and a cash bar so you can make an evening of it! We have Donna Shnorr who will address both Balance and Brains and present another workshop on women’s health

called The Ground Floor; Michael Shepp will talk about the issues men face as they age – er, grow younger! If you’re interested in things a little more scientific in nature, we’ll have a speaker (Ritchie Renfrow) about solar energy who is NOT a salesman. He’ll give you the benefit of his research and experience as he considers solar as an energy alternative. On a more historical note, Lorraine Gala-Lewis will demonstrate native American pottery techniques, and Judge Gemmill (retired) will talk about what it was like to grow up near Lizard Acres…he’s a local boy…which means he’s a rarity and has lots of local stories to tell. This is not to say we don’t have new offerings from our current instructors…as usual they have different takes on new subjects, and another chance for you to catch something you may have had to miss before. You can see the details online at grandlearning.org or pick up a catalog.

GIFT CARDS AVAILABLE A new offering is Grand Learning Gift Cards…Know someone who already has everything?…give them a gift card from Grand Learning and solve your “What to get?” problem. Cards are available in any denomination, are virtual cards so there is nothing to carry around, and they don’t lose their value. Perfect. It’s not too soon to think about making some gifts… soaps, or Snazzy Sneakers make personal gifts for that person who you know has everything but will love that you made it yourself. The Clay Club will show you the basics and the Art Club will continue doing introductory classes…a new one this time is Drawing. We are here to help…so give us a call or stop by. We are in the Chaparral Center, and can be reached at 623-546-7470. The office will be open from 9 to 4, Monday through Friday.

THE PUEBLO OF ACOMA & EL MALPAIS NATIONAL MONUMENT

Day One: We’ll leave the Valley with a stop for coffee & goodies, on our way to grab lunch on self at Red Onion in Heber, Arizona. Famous for their burgers and chili, Red Onion’s menu offers something for everyone and affordable daily specials. After lunch it’s back on the bus and we’re headed into western New Mexico. We’ll check into Sky City Casino Hotel, our headquarters for the next two nights. This relaxed hotel overlooks the mountains and is just 10 miles from the Acoma Pueblo. We’ll enjoy a free evening and dinner on self, with a couple of dining options to choose from, including an affordable buffet. Day Two: Breakfast is on self at the hotel, then it’s back on the bus and we’re headed for the Pueblo of Acoma. We’ll begin our guided tour at Sky City Cultural Center and Haak’u Museum, the gateway to “Sky City.” Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico is part of New Mexico’s cultural heritage, as the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in North America, and the 28th Historic Site designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. We’ll explore more than two thousand years of Acoma history, from its initial role as the home of the Anasazi people, to the thirteenth century founding of the Pueblo, which is still very much alive! This is a 1.5 hour tour over sometimes uneven terrain. Later we’ll enjoy lunch on self at Y’aak’a Café, offering a diverse menu of Acoma traditional foods, as well as contemporary American dishes. After lunch it’s back on the bus and we’re headed for El Malpais National Monument, and an incredibly scenic drive offering views of sandstone cliffs and arches, the Zuni Mountains and distant volcanic craters. El Malpais, Spanish for “the badlands,” is a geologic mix of lava flows, cinder cones, pressure ridges and lava tubes; protected land that is vast, mysterious and majestic. Late afternoon we’ll head back to our hotel for a free evening and dinner on self. Day Three: Breakfast is on self at the hotel, then it’s bags out and we’re back on the bus. We’ll enjoy a scenic loop drive back to the Valley, with a stop for lunch on self at the awarding winning Turquoise Room at La Posada Hotel in Winslow, Arizona. This is the last of the old railroad hotels, a remarkable tour all unto itself. Join us for this bucket-list of an adventure. TONTO NATURAL BRIDGE & EL RANCHO We’re heading for Payson to explore Tonto Natural Bridge State Park—home to the world’s largest travertine bridge. This natural arch 54

stands over a 400 foot long tunnel that measures 150 feet at its widest point and reaches a towering height of 183 feet, presenting a beautiful and dramatic sight. The Tonto Natural Bridge was first documented by David Gowan, a Scotsman, who discovered the location in 1877, while hiding from hostile Apache tribe members. He was so moved by the beauty of this site that he persuaded his family to emigrate and make this area their home. They lived near the bridge until 1948, and their lodge building still stands and is listed in the Register of Historic Places. We’ll stop for lunch on self before heading into the park at El Rancho, named by Arizona’s Highways one of top 25 restaurants in the state. El Rancho’s been serving traditional Mexican food, along with some American favorites, for over 30 years and locals voted them the “Best Margarita in Town” and “Best Mexican Food.” They offer a great little lunch menu with affordable specials. This is a great early fall tour. Call in your reservations and come with us! *This trip is offered in conjunction with TJ Travels. SOUTHERN ARIZONA MISSIONS & CHURCHES Early Spanish missionaries built adobe chapels and missions throughout Mexico, which at the time included San Xavier del Bac, once part of the chain of churches that stretched from northern Mexico to the western United States. After this fascinating tour of San Xavier del Bac, we’ll head south to Tumacacori for lunch on self, at Wisdom Café. Owned and operated by four generations of the Wisdom family, serving great Mexican food that is steeped in tradition, the Wisdom Café has been a popular tourist destination for decades. After lunch we’ll explore the Tumacacori National Historic Park, home to San Jose de Tumacacori. This massive and haunting ruin was originally built around 1800 by Franciscan priests. It was abandoned before completion, and later gutted by Apache warriors and various fortune hunters. Today San Jose de Tumacacori serves as a fascinating reminder of early American and Spanish history. From here, we’ll head into to the village of Tubac, home to lovely and historic St. Ann’s Catholic Church, a place of continuous worship for over 250 years. Southern Arizona is rich with historic churches and missions—some elaborately constructed with imported materials during the mining boom era, are still in use. This fascinating tour fills quickly—don’t wait to call in your reservations! Times and pick-up locations subject to change per tour vendor. This is the final weekend for Harvest at the Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Garden—a floral playground of autumn arrangements of seasonal plants among 45,000 flowers, 1,950 shrubs and 30 trees—an enchanting landscape featuring towering peacocks and mystical creatures. Over 20,000 people, from all over the world, pass through this garden daily. Later we’ll enjoy a free evening, and there is much to see and do in Las Vegas! Day Two: A full breakfast buffet is included at the hotel. After breakfast we’ll hop back on the bus and we’re off to enjoy a spectacular scenic drive through Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Just 15 miles west of Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon offers the most incredible views of desert beauty, towering red cliffs and abundant wild life—a stark contrast to the bright lights and glitz of Las Vegas! This gorgeous conservation area is home to about 200 different animals, which include: burros, coyotes, bighorn sheep, red tailed hawks, golden eagles, hummingbirds, wild horses, bobcats, and mountain lions, just to name a few. Don’t forget your camera! Early afternoon we’ll return to our hotel and grab some lunch on self, before heading to the The Mob Museum—The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement. This nonprofit is dedicated to the history of organized crime and it is a world-class destination in downtown Las Vegas. The Mob Museum offers a bold and authentic view of organized crime from vintage Las Vegas to the back alleys of American Cities and— increasingly—across the border and networks the entire world. Explore the real stories and actual events of Mob history through interactive exhibits and one-of-a-kind Mob and law enforcement artifacts in the restored 1933 courthouse and post office. Later enjoy dinner on self, with unlimited restaurants to choose from. After dinner the evening is yours to enjoy! Strike out on your own or explore the glitzy casinos along the Strip with Jeff. Day Three: Enjoy the award-winning Saturday Brunch Buffet at the hotel, included. After a relaxing brunch, we’ll jump back on the bus and head for beautiful Lake Mead. We’ll enjoy a mid-day 90-minute sightseeing paddleboat cruise—a wonderful opportunity to explore the full beauty and majesty of the area. We’ll enjoy a light lunch on self, onboard at the Paddlewheel Grill, where the super affordable menu runs from burgers and sandwiches to salads and nachos. A full-service

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT

WHAT IS A SMART HOME? Friends just informed us they are moving into a newly built “smart apartment building.” I keep hearing the term “smart home” and am curious as to what that means and whether I should get on the bandwagon? Wayne (a Sun City Grand full-time resident)

Dear Wayne, A “smart (apartment) building” or “smart home” is a residence equipped with the devices and systems that can be controlled remotely by a smartphone or computer. “Smart technologies” can include lighting, energy, heating/air conditioning, security and building access systems as well as “smart appliances” such as the following: n Appliances capable of communicating with one another and/ or controlled remotely (turned on or off by a time schedule, from any room in the home, or remotely from any location by smartphone or tablet via the internet). Some examples of smart appliances are certain models of: LG Washers and Dryers, Samsung refrigerators, Kohler Smart Toilet, Petsafe Automatic Pet Feeder, Oral B Genius 8000 Toothbrush, Smart Toasters, etc. n Security systems (smart locks, window sensors, camera monitoring, smart doorbells) n Heating and air conditioning systems (smart thermostats) n Smart light bulbs (that remotely dim, turn on and off, change colors, detect

when occupants are in the room to adjust lighting as needed) n Smart speakers (like Amazon Echo, Google Home Assistant, Apple Home Pod, etc. using voice to activate commands) n TVs that connect to the internet and access content through applications (such as on-demand video and music using voice or gesture recognition), n Computers, entertainment audio & video systems (home entertainment systems) n Smart blinds that can open and shut to keep the house cool or allow more heat in through the windows or programmed to open slowly in the morning to help you wake up to natural lighting Currently there is no single brand of components or single interface to connect all these various components. This means that to add smart components to your home, you may have to use multiple interfaces and communication protocols.

Protocols are the way devices communicate among themselves and with your smartphone. Most smart components come with easy-to-use apps that run on both Android and Apple (iOS) devices. Many smart home devices, such as smart plugs and switches, have WiFi built in; or other products like August Smart Lock Pro or Philips Hue light bulbs come with a Wi-Fi bridge, which lets you control them remotely. However, once you have more than one or two smart devices, it is beneficial to invest in a smart home hub or centralized method to connect many of your devices to the cloud with one app that acts as a kind of universal remote. A hub provides the ability to automate your gadgets so they will work together. For example, when you unlock your door, the lights in your hallway can automatically turn on. It is important to research which protocol most of the devices you want to use before investing in a hub. The best

thing to do is to decide which smart-home devices you want and then to see which protocol each device uses. Then check the various brands of smart-home networking hubs. Many are compatible with two or more of the following protocols and are able to connect different smart objects together to communicate flawlessly: Z-Wave, Zigbee, WeMo, Bluetooth Mesh, or Thread. Next month, in answer to your question about jumping on the bandwagon, we will discuss the pros and cons and safety issues when installing these smart devices. Special thanks to Joette Z. for submitting the photo of her lovable feline, Ivy, who is 16 years young. Every night Ivy is indulged either by a ride in the car or a walk around the block in her pet baby carriage.

HOME SWEET HOME

opportunity to be more mindful of how we drive and interact with the roads throughout Surprise. As Police Chief Terry Young stated, “no text message or phone call is worth risking a collision.”

DISTRACTED DRIVING ORDINANCE

Nancy Hayden Council Member, District 2

MY HOME I am proud to call Sun City Grand my home. With its world-class golf courses and luxurious amenities, it truly is a gem. It is no surprise to me then, that 55places.com, as part of its annual survey, ranked Sun City Grand as the 4th best 55+ Community in the United States for 2018. The website noted the amenities, activities, golf courses, and modern floor plans as the main draw for retirees. What makes this all the more impressive is that over 2,000 communities are featured on the website! If that’s not impressive, I don’t know what is.

Last month, my colleagues and I approved the Distracted Driving Ordinance, which goes into effect this week. Essentially, the ordinance makes it illegal to use a mobile communication device – such as a cell phone – while driving, unless it is in hands−free mode, or the driver is contacting emergency personnel for emergency reasons. Under the law, violators will be subject to a $250 fine when cited by officers. I feel that this measure was long overdue, and will bring an additional layer of safety to drivers here in Surprise. This ordinance is a positive step in the right direction, and could not have been made possible without the dedicated work of our public safety officials in the Surprise Police Department, and the approval of my colleagues on the City Council. I hope we all take this

From the moment I stepped into office, traffic safety was a top priority of mine, and I will continue to work alongside Chief Young to discover new ways of preventing more tragedies from occurring. I would be remiss not to mention how much the March pedestrian fatality shook this community, and I hope laws like this and continued efforts to push our Drive Wise, Surprise safe-driving campaign will prevent future accidents. I would love to discuss traffic safety issues with you. Please give me a call anytime at (623) 222−1322, or email me at Nancy.Hayden@surpriseaz.gov. I would also love to speak with you in−person at one of my district meetings — either the 2nd Wednesday from 10−11 a.m. at Arizona Traditions Neighborhood Center, or the 4th Tuesday from 10−11 a.m. at the Sun City Grand Palm Center, Mediterranean Room.

I believe that this accomplishment is not only a testament to the greatness of Sun City Grand, but to Surprise as a whole! Surprise has always been an amazing city to live in, but it is at a turning point where so many new and great things are happening. Because of all these exciting developments, we continue to attract individuals and families to settle in Surprise for the longterm. As such, I feel that it is my duty to promote measures that make it a safe and desirable place to live. 66
