FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
W. David Twiggs
Good things are happening in Sun City Grand. We are very excited with moving forward with our new food and beverage operations. This is a comprehensive effort to plan and coordinate the lifestyle experience across the SCG campus. When I was hired, the board expressed their commitment to give the best quality of life and opportunities for enjoyment to the residents possible. I believe that this will be a great step in fulfilling that. Stay tuned for more information on these exciting upgrades.
General Manager
As we continue to open up amenities, we ask your continued cooperation in social distancing and wearing masks in all SCG facilities. We still fall under all the State and City regulations as they pertain to Covid and we will continue to abide by those as we move forward. We have taken some proactive steps in looking to the health of our community. All SCG buildings have been upgraded to MERV 13 filters in our HVAC systems. MERV 13 filters are rated to filter the virus from the air were the previous MERV 10 were not. This, of course, is no guarantee of safety but it is a positive preventative step. All residents are asked to take responsibility for their own health and make good decisions based on their conditions and comfort level. If you are not comfortable being around others or you are not feeling well, we ask you to stay home. We are preparing for our seasonal residents return and wish everyone safe travels on their way back to there SCG home.
Thank you, David W. David Twiggs

Our Italian Sub Sandwich
It is made on a hard Italian roll hollowed out a bit to allow the top to fill comfortably. It is dressed with hard, dry salami, capicola (Spicy style in this case) rolled on the bun accompanied by provolone cheese, all topped with my mother's recipe of roasted red peppers and onions in virgin olive oil. Pair this with a nice Paso Robles Sculpterra glass of wine!

The sandwich features a standard sub/hoagie roll. For meat I used sliced deli rotisserie chicken and Genoa salami. It is topped with thin sliced Swiss cheese. Veggies include shredded iceberg lettuce, tomato, red bell pepper, onion, black olives and parsley flakes. I finish it with olive oil and your choice of vinegar.

FROM STANDARDS
When Painting YourHome An increasing number of residents have experienced issues with the proper placement of Base, Trim, and Accent colors required on the various ‘elevations (architectural design of the front) of the homes in the community. Many home models have more than one elevation for the same floorplan. In order to help make your painting project run smoothly, and to be sure the color scheme and paint placement locations you have planned are
18
definitely compliant with the Residential Design Guidelines, we strongly recommend that your painter come into the Standards Office to confirm both your planned color scheme and the required placement locations for the Base, Trim, and Accent colors on your particular model and elevation. This should always happen when you are considering changing to a different color scheme. It should also happen when you are simply having your house
repainted using your existing color scheme, because the paint placement may have been incorrect when the house was last painted, and merely painting it the identical color scheme with the same paint placement locations could result in a violation of the Residential Design Guidelines. Although
ARC Applications are required for new color schemes only, Standards would like all contractors to stop in and confirm the color scheme and paint placement locations for all repainting jobs in order to avoid potential noncompliance citations and repainting requirements.

WILL 2021 BE YOUR YEAR TO STEP UP AND STEP OUT? Is it your year to take a more active role in our Grand community? Is it your year to be involved and to make a positive difference?
step out
Choosing to become a Board member candidate gives you the opportunity to have a beneficial impact on the future of our beautiful Grand community and lifestyle.
Sun City Grand is governed by seven elected community members who comprise our Board of Directors, along with their many appointed committees. Since early March, our Board members haven’t missed a beat, fulfilling their regular roles while working to keep our community members safe and engaged during challenging times. Each of our Board members is a resident homeowner, and they work together on behalf of all community members for the greater good.

For Board position information and the preliminary Election calendar, check out our website at suncitygrand.com/get. If you have questions, email us at scgelections@ gmail.com.
Is this your year to run for the Board? Serving on the Board is an opportunity to use your skills and expertise to make a long-term impact. As a Board member, you’ll fulfill a host of duties, including setting the policies that make your community a great place to live. It’s a big job, and it requires some big commitments in terms of dedication, responsibility and time. In return, the satisfaction you feel, and the bonds and friendships you form along the way, are irreplaceable. So . . . Step Up and Step Out to the challenges and excitement of being an active part of this amazing community. Consider running for one of the three open Board seats in the upcoming election cycle and be part of the leadership team that defines our future. A video featuring current board members is being created to inform community members about this important role. Watch for it soon on the SCG website.

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE
RESIDENT OF THE COLONNADE CREATES ART FOR HER NEIGHBORS Former Sun City Grand Resident Arlen Madole Shares Her Talents If you walk into The Colonnade resident Arlen Madole’s casita you feel like you are transported to another place with all of her beautiful artwork hung on her walls. “I am primarily a watercolor artist, however, moving to Arizona provided me with a new interest in colors of the desert and then oil painting,” Arlen shares. “Travel has given me a wealth of experience and resources for all my art. Living and traveling in the Northwestern United States, Asia and Europe is always reflected in the art I do.”
She teaches art to adults and students The Colonnade and exhibits at the Ground Floor Artists Studio in Surprise, at the Sun City Grand Art Club and at local churches. Her art is owned privately in the United States, Asia and the United Kingdom. The Colonnade is one of three nonprofit Life Plan communities locally owned
and operated by Sun Health. It’s part of Sun City Grand, and has more than 320 residents in Independent Living. The 40-acre campus also offers Assisted Living and Memory Support services open to the public. While life has changed considerably in recent months, our commitment to health and safety hasn’t wavered. We’ve successfully implemented stringent protocols in response to COVID-19 and continue to work with residents and staff to ensure a thriving, healthy lifestyle for all. With your safety in mind, our communities are open and ready to help you start planning for the future. For up-to-date information about the campus, visit SunHealthCommunities.org or call (623) 236-3700.
And now she is using her talents to brighten up the walls of other residents’ homes who live in Assisted Living at The Colonnade. Arlen has graciously created an 8 X 10 painting and shared matte prints as well as added a personalized note on the back that says: “This is an original watercolor painting that I did for you! I hope that you enjoy having it, as much as I enjoyed painting it! Hopefully we will be able to visit with each other soon!” -Arlen Madole As of mid-September, Arlen has shared about 10 pieces of art with her fellow residents. “One of the most wonderful things about the Colonnade is the residents,” said Nina Louis, executive director. “Arlen is extremely talented and generous to share such a gift with those around her.” Arlen’s formal education is from Boise State University and Oregon State University where she received a Master’s degree in Adult Education. Through teaching art classes, owning an art gallery and working with other artists, she has been able to expand her work, and become a more experienced artists who exhibits art in many juried shows. 20

REMEMBER WHEN . . .
“Zoom” was the sound your children made while racing around on their tricycles? Now tricycles have battery packs, and Zoom is the way we hold meetings. Change happens, even when we’re not paying attention. But over the past 6 months, thousands of additional community members have paid attention and are now receiving News of the Day updates via email. They Zoom, in record numbers, to watch our Board of Directors and Committee meetings. The ways to stay connected at Grand keep expanding, and include virtual activities led by our Communications Department and live Zoom fitness classes. From their computers and phone screens, from wherever they happen to be, our members are becoming more informed about SCG happenings than ever before. And communication will only get better.
Election Information One of the many changes you’ll see in our community over the next few months is how we’ll be conducting our Board of Directors Election. n
Candidate photos and statements will be available online via video links, 24/7 (and will replace the poster boards previously found throughout the community). n There will be a zoomed “Candidate Q & A” where a moderator will ask prepared questions of the candidates. n At a zoomed “Meet the Candidates” second Q & A, community members will have the opportunity to submit questions beforehand to be asked by the moderator. (This format replaces the previous round table events.) n Both Q & A events will be recorded and available for viewing via Vimeo on the SCG website 24/7.
Voting for your Board members will continue to be online, with paper ballots available at the Membership desk in the Palm Center for pickup. Please follow News of the Day and watch for upcoming Grand Lifestyles articles for further details and information, including dates and times.
SCG members are more connected We will have three open Board seats during this election cycle; and with thousands more SCG members connected, we’re in for a great ride and our most inclusive election ever! If you have any questions about running for the Board or the changes to the election process, check out our website at suncitygrand.com/get or email us at scgelections@gmail.com. We are looking for SCG men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. Call Julie Madden (CAM) 623-546-7473 or the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us!
WE NEED
EVENING PATROL IS BACK!! Article submitted by Dennis Hanscom C.H.A.P.S. member
(Before you read on we have this important update to share: Evening Patrol has resumed beginning in October. So…if you hear that doorbell ring, and you see a masked person standing 6 feet or more from your front door it is one of your SCG neighbors from C.H.A.P.S.* advising you your garage door is open. Although he or she will be wearing a mask they will carry identification on a lanyard and be donning a yellow vest. We drive white vehicles with C.H.A.P.S. on a yellow magnetic sign on door of vehicle.) It’s that time of year when we welcome new homeowners in Sun City Grand, and those returning to enjoy the winter months. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to one of the volunteer groups that is presently functioning here in Grand – C.H.A.P.S. Our group serves two main functions: Evening Patrol and Vacation Watch.
EVENING PATROL
Teams of two drive around in the evening and check for open garage doors, and street lights that are not operational. And, we report any other suspicious activity. The SCG community is broken down into 6 zones. When a patrol team goes out on patrol they will only patrol one zone as determined by the Dispatch person who mans the desk in the C.H.A.P.S. office. The zone is methodically driven by turn-by-turn navigation as called out to the driver by the navigator. When an open door is spotted the team stops and notifies the homeowner the garage door is open. Our goal is to provide this notification for the sake of the homeowner’s safety. We also stop when the garage is open high enough for someone to crawl under. When we see a non-functioning street light we stop, record the pole number and file a report with APS. Evening Patrol is a 2-hour shift.
VACATION WATCH
This is a FREE service! A homeowner must be away
Grand Lifestyles | October 2020 | suncitygrand.com
for a minimum of 2 weeks to sign up for this service. A team of two goes out in the early morning hours to check vacation homes in a section that is determined by the office coordinator. We simply perform a walk around of a home checking for unlocked doors and windows. At no time do we enter a home. Vacation Watch is a 2-hour shift. Even if you do not become a C.H.A.P.S. member at the present time we encourage you to sign up for this FREE service that offers peace of mind. Classroom and in-car training are provided prior to being turned loose on your own. Being a C.H.A.P.S. volunteer we ask that you serve two days per month. That is not mandatory, but simply a guideline. And, yes, you can be one of those lucky snowbirds who get to escape for the summer and still be an active C.H.A.P.S. member. Community Association Management (CAM) provides our group with vehicles to drive. You have likely already seen one of our white vehicles driving through the community.
They each display a yellow magnetic sign with C.H.A.P.S. in black letters on the signs.
WE NEED YOU!
Like any volunteer organization we are always looking for new people to step in and help us keep this much needed service running smoothly. Being a member is an excellent way to learn this community. And, a great way to meet new people and develop friendships along the way. Call Julie Madden (CAM) 623-546-7473 or the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-5467553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us! We will put you on our list and someone will contact you to provide info as to when we will be safely returning to our training segment of C.H.A.P.S. Due to covid-19 we are unable to conduct our regular monthly meetings as a group. Therefore, watch for future updates as to when we have been given the go ahead to resume our meetings. They are usually held the 4th Tuesday of each month at 1:30 at the Sonoran Plaza. *C.H.A.P.S.: Community Homeowner Association Patrol Service 31
FROM THE LONG-RANGE PLANNING COMMITTEE look forward to generating $147,000 in CARE fee revenue on those same sales in the future.
What is this Long-Range Planning Committee that I keep hearing about? While we all are sheltering in place, making masks, signing online waivers, dipping our toes back into activities, and trying to keep from going completely stir crazy, your Long-Range Planning Committee (LRP) has been very busy working on projects for the community. What kind of projects you might ask? Their Charter defines their job as being the keepers of the Strategic Plan and making sure that they are recommending ideas in a way that emphasizes the Strategic Plan and emerging trends in active, adult communities over the next five to ten years. The official definition can be found in a box in this article along with their Mission statement. Even though our SCG operating budget has suffered some setbacks in revenue and expenses due to COVID, those funds (and their contingency fund) are separate from the monies that fund most LRP projects. Because of this separation of funds, LRP feels comfortable continuing to work on forward-looking projects for the community that will be executed in the coming years as the board prioritizes and approves them. Just to give you some perspective, here are the available funds as of the end of August. FUND NAME DOLLARS Reserves $ 19,713,000 CARE $ 3,697,000 TOTAL $23,410,000
USES Replacement of current assets as they reach the end of useful life Creation of new assets to keep Grand attractive to new buyers – paid by new buyers upon closing
As you can see, our long-range projects are well-funded. Our community’s annual operating budget is around $23,000,000. That is funded by dues, golf, and other activities and covers all our operating expenses and contributions to the reserve fund. The information on how we are doing each month is in the front of the Grand Lifestyles Magazine.
At the June board meeting, the board voted to raise the CARE fee to $3,500, beginning July, 2020. This makes us competitive with other communities and allows us to more quickly accomplish our long list of projects to keep Grand attractive to our current residents and future buyers. By doing that, we can keep our homes attractively priced against the competition. As the CARE fund grows with the ongoing sale of homes, the BOD will begin to allocate those funds to our future projects. If home sales slow, our project implementations will slow.
When the update of the CC&Rs was consented to by two thirds of our residents, it allowed the board to decouple the CARE fund amount from the annual dues. It had been an amount equal to one year’s current dues. The board can now set the CARE fee amount taking into consideration market conditions, community needs, and other factors without impacting the annual dues. Our fee has been the lowest in the west valley, and it can be argued that we are the premier community in the west valley – if not all of Arizona. 32
Speaking of CARE, here are some stats on the effect of our new CARE fee. Since the new CARE fee came into existence, we have closed 42 homes (July-August). Under the old fee, that would have generated about $67,300. Under the new CARE fee, we can
So, what is LRP working on to improve our future here in Grand? The list is long, but here are the ones that have active project teams working on them. As a side note, there are a couple things we always have to keep in mind: 1) how much can we disrupt the community at any one time and 2) how much capability to handle projects does our CAM staff have? These are limiting factors that the Board must consider as much as the dollars.
Granite Falls Restaurant
The first contract has been signed to begin design and construction of the remodel when Coco’s vacates the property 12/31/20. Covid19 has slowed this project, and we expect the project to take one year to design, get the permits, and build. The design work is now underway. Our new F&B company will have a large hand in this process, assuming that project comes to fruition as expected.
Food & Beverage
This project has been going for nearly two years and is in the final selection process. The last details are being worked on for a contract and may be signed by the Board by the time you read this – after the Town Hall that happened in September. Look for lots of interesting and creative changes to food service here in Grand in the coming year. Over time, they will provide all food and beverage service throughout our campus with many new things planned like service on the golf courses and around our pools, improved snack bars, expanded Café, catering, delivery, and more.
Village Center
This is another project that has been on the project list for a couple of years, but has recently been moved up in priority as the irrigation under the entire center and water features is failing and has to be dug up and

replaced. Fortunately, we had done some preliminary scope of design work with a local firm, conducted 2 town halls and a resident survey, so we were ready to bring this project forward with some preliminary designs for the community to view in a third town hall. Our design firm will take that new input and come back to us with a final look at the designs and the team will make a recommendation to the Board to move ahead quickly to mesh with the reserve funded project for the irrigation. New water features, lighting, sound, more seating for events, more shade, and the ever-loved ficus and palm trees will all be part of the renovation.
Mission Statement: Long-Range Planning Committee • We are the stewards of the Sun City Grand Strategic Plan and the innovators, researchers and planners for our community’s future. • We continually assess the strengths and weaknesses of Sun City Grand against the evolving needs and desires of our current residents and the offerings of competitive communities. • We evaluate trends, innovations and opportunities to determine their feasibility in our community • We contribute in the development of the Marketing Plan in order to promote our community to potential new residents. • We propose vetted ideas and plans to the Board of Directors that enhance community livability and vitality, and support our Sun City Grand Vision, Mission and Values.
Duties and Responsibilities 1. Develop and provide a report to the BOD prior to the annual budget process. This report shall include: a. A list of recommended projects for the up-coming year. b. A multi-year plan for future projects with priority given to each that provides significance in supporting the future needs of SCG. c. Include projected financial needs for each project 2. Ensure projects are within the scope of the Strategic Plan before recommending them in the annual report. 3. Facilitate ongoing research for future long-range planning needs. 4. Develop a process and recommend to the BOD a plan to manage and update the Sun City Grand (SCG) Strategic Plan. 5. Perform other long-range planning actions as requested by the BOD.
Technology
Our new general manager, David Twiggs, sees the value of data and having a system that can provide facts that will help guide our business and save us money and minimize mistakes. He has asked the technology subcommittee to work with him to interview potential companies to replace our current campus-wide system and provide new technologies that are common in active adult communities. The team has done over 40 interviews with clubs, interviewed key CAM staff, conducted a community-wide survey and has recently completed an in-depth analysis that started with five vendors, narrowed to three and identified a preferred candidate, with which to take a deeper dive, before making a final recommendation to LRP, CAM and the Board. This process has been time consuming, but necessary, to make sure that we select the very best system possible to manage Grand’s future. Some of the new features that you can look forward to include: n Improved network operating efficiency, including improved campus Wi-Fi n New Website integrated with all member and back office functions n Microsites for Charter Clubs n Personalized calendaring capability – with what’s important to you n Branded Smartphone App n Multiple authentication methods – card, fob, phone, wristband, etc. n Ability to make online payments for reservations, classes and events (Credit Cards and Credit book) n Auto check-in for classes and events
Grand Lifestyles | October 2020 | suncitygrand.com
Improved Ticketing Application (hold seats, season tickets) n Improved connectivity between Chelsea and payment system n All new document retrieval and search system n Improved ARC functionality integrated to each owner n New room reservation system and processes n Improved internal operations, improving efficiency and time with better data gathering capabilities n Reduced manual work—save time and money n
Not all of these features will be rolled out at once, but expect to see some real improvements in the way you live life on campus, and interact with your clubs and CAM, here at Sun City Grand. Although there are many more projects on the radar, we hope that this gives you a better idea of who LRP is and what they do to make our lives here in Grand better each year. Thanks to all of you for your support of Long-Range Planning and your fellow residents’ efforts to keep our community strong and committed to being the “premier active adult community in Arizona.”

We will post the latest information we have on the dance club website: scgdanceclub.org.

WEEDS Friendly Reminder from Standards We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

CLUB & INTEREST GROUP INFORMATION STITCHERS During this pandemic our Beaders SIG has continued to order beads and create beautiful items that remain unseen because of Covid-19.. The creativity of our beaders using a pattern or not needs to be seen. Our Quilters SIG has continued to work numerous hours to meet the needs of our community whether making masks or Caring Quilts. Our story of Caring Quilts is a simple one. Quilters found a need to provide comfort quilts to women going thru breast cancer surgery at Banner Del Webb. Every patient gets a quilt from us. We have donated hundreds of quilts to this program, and our quilters did not Quit just because the Sewing Room was closed. This program has extended to Donor Families as well. When a Organ Donor Patient goes into surgery, the family gets a quilt to remember their loved one. A lot of work goes into each quilt, from sorting donated fabric, cutting quilt kits, assemble of quilts, creating an attractive quilt back, cutting the batting and binding, quilting them on both our Long Arm at the Sewing Room or members home machines, binding, labeling and washing and packaging the quilts. Many hands touch each quilt, and each hand is a gift of their hearts. The director of Quilting has a motto she uses "A quilt is a hug from me to you". And that's what we try to give cancer patients at one of the most difficult times of their lives. Paula Forster, President, SCG Stitcher's Paulaszoo@aol.com

EMAIL, TEXT AND PHONE SCAMS
My neighbors recently have been bombarded with text messages, phone calls, and emails that appear very suspect. Are you aware of an uptick of any recent scams? Jack and Sophie
Dear Jack and Sophie, Yes, there has been a significant increase in scams targeting all devices via email, text messages and telephone. You must pay close attention as not to be taken in by these scammers.

mobile users via text message / email with offers of free virus tests nearby, for the entire family. The message or email instructs you to respond “yes” immediately, add a photocopy of your insurance card ID or provide the policy information listed on the ID plus social security numbers for those requesting to be tested as well as various financial details. These tests are often tied in with offering diabetic monitors or similar equipment. Do not respond, do not click on any links.

FAKE DONATION CALLS.
It is natural for folks to want to help during economic downturns and natural disasters, but scammers are taking advantage of our generosity by pretending to be nonprofits or donation centers asking for aid. As a rule, never donate on a whim. Check the Federal Trade Commission website to avoid charity scams: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/ features/how-donate-wiselyand-avoid-charity-scams before contributing anything.

Some ask you to set a delivery preference, ask you to fill out a survey, give you a fake shipment tracker link (which can be malware), ask for your credit card number, promise a reward for shipping, ask you to click on a link to confirm an “order” or even say they found a parcel from an earlier time and ask you to click on the link to confirm it is yours. Check with the mail carrier directly instead of answering the text.

NATIONAL ORDERS AND EMERGENCIES.
Scammers will send a declaration of emergency regarding the epidemic and will try to make you click on a link for more information, or ask you to provide sensitive data according to “government orders.” While the federal government really does have the ability to send mass text messages for national emergencies and similar reasons, it is an easy scam to see through: Check online news sources to see what the news is saying about any government proclamations, then check social media to see if anyone else has received the same message. If there is a proclamation, it will be sent to everyone.
FAKE “CONTACT TRACING”. Texts are
another scam in which random people are contacted requesting personal information for the state’s contact tracing program. These scams cleverly make it appear the text messages or voicemails come from legitimate government agencies. about to be closed, has been hacked, purchases were made from other countries, etc. so you need to take immediate action. They will prey on your fear and insist that you provide personal information such as a PIN number, SSN, or account password—immediately to make sure the account stays open. While banks do sometimes send text messages if you sign up for them, they use these to confirm credit card activity and similar tasks. The phishing texts most likely will not include any personal information and often include suspicious links or insist you call their help number on the email or text immediately. If called, the scammers might suggest they can “help” you navigate your account online or can check your computer for possible hacks, malware, or viruses. Never click a link or call the number listed in the message.
Go straight to company’s website and find the customer service number or log in online to communicate with a customer service rep. Never allow a caller to take over your PC to “help” without being sure who the person actually is.

To repeat earlier general advice: Unexpected calls, and calls that ask you for any financial information are scams. Texts or emails that ask you to click an attached link can infect your device with malware, no matter how official the link looks—so do not click it. If you think you have been a victim of a scam, report the information to your local police, reset your passwords on all devices, let your bank and credit card companies know your financial information might have been stolen and update and run your anti-virus software. Hazard Mitigation Program
Moving on to another important topic, the safety of our residents in very important to me, and the City of Surprise needs your input for the 2021 Maricopa County Hazard Mitigation Plan! Surprise works with Maricopa
County and other jurisdictions around the Valley to review, update, and adopt the Maricopa County Multijurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan. The plan reduces the potential loss from natural hazards and is a living document that requires adjustments to maintain its relevance and remain a useful tool and resource. Maintaining a FEMA approved plan also ensures the community’s continued eligibility for non-emergency, federal hazard mitigation grants. If you would like to provide input on this survey, please visit maricopa.gov/1760/HazardMitigation before December 31, 2020. The survey includes 10 questions, and all responses are anonymous. In closing, we may not know what October has in store for us yet, but it is my hope that you are able to mask up, decorate, and embrace the spirit of the month. Let’s be honest, we’ve all had enough! Try to be creative and may your tricks be more of a treat! Happy Halloween!
