The Benefits of Volunteering

April 1st is the start of the 1st quarter with the new Board. Congratulations to everyone that participated in the Board election and thank you for getting involved in the governance of your community.

I would be remised if I did not give a special thank you to the Grand Election Team (GET) members for their hard work and dedication for a very successful election process.

Our Volunteer Program Manager, Denise Alessi always says, “Grand is fortunate to have many experienced residents who give back to the community by sharing their knowledge and time participating in volunteer roles. There are over four hundred volunteers who participate in governance roles, non-governance roles, and ad hoc projects.

Volunteerism makes a significant impact in our community and benefits the residents who participate. Studies show that volunteering is beneficial to overall health and well-being and residents have shared feedback that they enjoy volunteering because it gives them a sense of purpose and helps them connect and establish new friendships.”

For those residents that do want to be involved at a committee role, you will be able to start picking up applications on April 2nd for the Board appointed committees and the applications are due April 9th by noon. You will start to see

Summer Transition

As spring/summer approaches we would like to remind everyone that all golf courses go through two transitions a year, summer and fall. The summer transition is vital to the long-term health of the base bermuda turf. Throughout the winter we compact & damage the base bermuda turf while it is dormant and must implement additional agronomic practices to recover the turf. This period of recovery is what we consider transition and will create periods where playability & aesthetics are impacted.

Below are some of the practices & expectations to anticipate during the recovery process.

n Double aerify and heavily top-dress the greens to create less interruptions during the summer golf when this practice needs to be done.

Remove the winter ryegrass with a selective herbicide. This would remove all the cool-season turf for the Bermuda grass to have 3-months of

Close each course for 3-weeks in the summer to

Staff will core aerify the golf course tees, fairways

An outside contractor will then deep tine aerify the fairways with ¾ inch solid tines. The ground was so hard the first couple of years these practices were implemented that the tines would bend or snap.

Staff will continue to heavily topdress the fairways during the summer closure to improve the soil

Put down sod in areas that have no sign of bermuda grass growth in a 100 square foot area. This was about an acre of sod plus per golf course when the program first started and there are almost no areas today that fit the original criteria for sodding.

n Hot Spots-The rye grass dies out faster than the bermuda grass can cover the course. All courses will have hot spots, which are areas of bare soil until the bermuda covers that area. This usually takes 8 to 12 weeks for the bermuda coverage to fill in all over the course.

n Rough – Roughs will thrive better when we allow the roughs to grow higher at this time.

n Turf loss- There will be loss of turf where areas of rye grass has died out and the bermuda has not covered that area yet.

With Granite Falls North not being overseeded this past winter we can anticipate the transition to be much less severe than the other three golf courses. This will provide a better playing surface throughout the early stages of the summer.

The staff appreciates your patience and support as this necessary work is performed for the long-term success of the golf courses.

Thank you,

DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS

The Surprising Link Between Hydration and The Aging Process

This month’s article was taken from the Blue Zones email

A new study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) published by eBioMedicine identifies the key role hydration is thought to play in the aging process. This new research serves as great proof of the importance of drinking enough water to stay properly hydrated.

The study determined that middleaged persons with higher sodium-towater levels in their blood biologically age faster. They are also more likely to develop chronic diseases – such as diabetes, heart failure, and dementia –and to die prematurely.

Decreased hydration levels were actually shown to accelerate the process of biological aging despite chronological age, our age measured in years from our birth.

According to an NIH press release, “The results suggest that proper hydration may slow down aging and prolong a disease-free life,” said Natalia Dmitrieva, Ph.D., a study author and researcher in the Laboratory of Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of NIH.

A MOUSE STUDY INSPIRED THE NEW RESEARCH

The study was inspired by an earlier study on mice which suggested that restricting water shortened their lives by as much as 6 months, equivalent to about 15 years of life for humans.

Researchers said in the new observational study that their initial goal was to test “the hypothesis that optimal hydration may slow down the aging process in humans.” The study used a large dataset from the federally funded Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study which included men and women between the ages of 45 and 66 years who were followed over a long period of time.

Researchers in the new study assessed information from ARIC study participants that had been shared during five medical visits – the first two when participants were in their 50s and then the last when they were ages 70 to 90. To allow for a fair comparison, researchers excluded data from adults who already had high levels of serum sodium or underlying conditions like obesity that might affect serum sodium levels.

“Decreased body water content is the most common factor that increases serum sodium, which is why the

results suggest that staying well hydrated may slow down the aging process and prevent or delay chronic disease,” said Dmitrieva.

WHAT IS SERUM SODIUM AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Serum sodium was used to gauge hydration habits in the new study. Serum sodium is the amount of sodium relative to the volume of water in the blood, and it goes up as hydration is reduced. Serum sodium can be detected by a simple blood test, and according to the Mayo Clinic, a normal blood sodium level is between 135 and 145 millimoles (mmol) per liter.

Researchers in the recent study used 15 age-dependent biomarkers to calculate the biological age of cohorts from the ARIC study. They found that people with higher serum sodium were biologically older than their cohorts of the same chronological age and also more prone to chronic, debilitating diseases that can reduce quality of life.

More specifically, the study results showed that odds to biologically age beyond one’s chronological age went up by an estimated 10-15 percent for serum sodium exceeding 144 mmol/l and by approximately 50 percent for serum sodium levels

above 144 mmol/l, when compared to participants with serum sodium levels between 137-142 mmol/l. Note that these higher serum sodium levels thought to increase biological aging are still within the normal range, even though they’re at the high end of the spectrum.

PEOPLE IN THE ORIGINAL BLUE ZONES DRINK LOTS OF WATER

People in the original blue zones, home to the longest-living populations, make drinking water a part of their daily routines. The Seventh Day Adventists, for instance, drink 7 glasses of water a day.

Hydrating primarily with water is just one of the recommendations in our Blue Zones Food Guidelines, which were designed so that you can eat – and drink – just like the longest-lived people in the world for the same longevity benefits. The guidelines advise drinking at least 7 glasses of water daily.

LONG RANGE PLANNING SURVEY RESULTS

WHAT DO OUR RESIDENTS REALLY THINK ABOUT LIVING IN GRAND— AND WHAT WOULD THEY LIKE TO SEE IN THE FUTURE?

Every few years, we take “the pulse” of the community and this year mirrored previous results going back at least 10 years – people are pretty darn happy living here. Is everything perfect in everyone’s estimation? No – that’s an unattainable objective. But overall, people like living here, are as involved as they want to be, and have some ideas for continuous improvement.

About 20% of our community took the time to answer the survey – which is considered a “statistically significant” sample. That means that enough people replied, that it could be generalized to the entire community. We also looked to see if the respondents generally fit the community profile. The age and gender spread were roughly reflective of our overall demographics. The 60–80 year-olds were slightly overrepresented and the over 80 and under 60 demographics were slightly underrepresented compared to the community as a whole. But those who represent the bulk of our population spoke up clearly.

WHAT DID WE LEARN?

Demographics: Our average age seems to have stabilized at about 74, after climbing for a number of years. About 8% of our residents are under 60 years old, so still a small part of our population. 60% of our residents live here pretty much year-round (10-12 months), and nearly half (47%) have lived here more than 10 years—a testimony to living the Grand life!

Work Status: This is an area that is changing nationally with the “work from home” trend growing and a new emerging trend of people working further into retirement age. In our small under 60 demographic, 48% are working either full or part time. By the time the late 60s roll around, currently only 13% are still working. A recent Harvard Business Review article points out that the fastest growing segment of the

working population is those over 65. HBR calls them “working retirees.” And it is not just those who need to work. This is a trend that can have implications for all our residents and how we serve them and how they volunteer. Long Range Planning will continue to watch this trend.

Health & Wellness: 80-90% of our residents believe that fitness and wellness activities are important to their lives here in Grand, with 98% being “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with the offerings (pools, classes, etc.). Our spa offering (Miller Massage) found 56% who thought that was an important amenity. More so in the younger demographic. For the future, our residents want to see more Nutritional Classes, more information centered around exercise and specific diseases and more meditation/ mindfulness classes. Evening classes were important, again to the younger demographics who are still working, with 43% of those under 60 looking for that amenity, while only 10% over 80 would like evening classes.

Education: Our educational offerings (Grand Learning and our Grand Library) also are well received with over 80% stating they are important to their lifestyle here and over 98% are satisfied. There are, however, things they would like to see offered in this area. Hands-on and interactive workshops/classes were the most popular with over 50% seeking those types of offerings. Field trips, cultural outings and

guest speakers on campus all rated an over 40% interest level.

Entertainment: Our residents do love our entertainment offerings, with Grand sponsored activities and ticketed performances by outside entertainers both rated “important” or “very important” by 94% of the residents. The respondents also rated performances by Grand residents and offsite trips at over 80% important. The satisfaction rating for these events is 96% satisfied. 60% of residents preferred having these events in the evening, with 19% preferring the afternoon. The survey team asked about a number of different types of events that we could bring here and the most popular were Touring theatre plays at 56% of respondents interested. Wine tastings and food pairings was second most popular at 40% interested. Various cultural attractions (ballet, symphony, ethnic celebrations, etc.) rated in the 25-28% range. Even at 25% that means that 25% of our residents, over 4,000 residents, could be interested in those types of events. Definitely worth looking into.

Golf: Although this wasn’t a “golf” survey per se, the team asked a couple overall questions of the entire community, not just golfers. 72% of all respondents, whether golfers or not, felt that golf activities were important to the enjoyment of Grand. The satisfaction ratings were a little more difficult to interpret, as not everyone who responded were golfers. 53% were satisfied, 6% were dissatisfied and 39% were neutral or “NA”. Likely those were the non-golfers who answered the question. According to our golf reservation system, about 35-40% of our residents play golf here. There will be a more in-depth golf questionnaire in the future.

Communications: This was a very interesting question that we divided into two parts – electronic and nonelectronic. For non-electronic means, The Grand Lifestyles magazine was a clear winner with 89% of residents reading it to obtain information about the community. Interestingly, 45% of residents get their information from

Grand Communications (non-electronic)

other residents – a little like the old “telephone” game! Maybe not always the most reliable! Our neighborhood reps came in at a solid 40% - and as that program continues to expand, it could be an even more important source of electronic and non-electronic information. By the way, an informal neighborhood rep survey last year put the number of homes without an electronic device at about 8% of our

17 Grand Lifestyles | April 2024 | livegrandaz.com

residents. For that population, these communications are important.

For electronic communications News of the Day was the most popular with 77% giving it a positive rating and the Grand website (livegrandaz.com) rating a 73% satisfaction rating. A new offering, the Grand phone app, rated a 43% satisfaction rating, even though it is new and people are still figuring it out. Try it out – you can get a lot of pertinent information at the touch of a finger on your smart phone!

Sustainability: This is a new topic to our Lifestyles surveys, but an

increasingly important one to our residents. The question was “Which sustainable practices would you most likely support in the Grand Community?” The top three were water conservation at 62%, solar energy conservation at 55% and more organic practices in golf course maintenance at 39%. This certainly gives the community some things to focus on for the future.

PARTICIPATION CHALLENGES

The last question tried to answer the question, if you don’t fully participate in Grand activities and amenities, are

Sustainable practices

there things that we could do to make that easier? Nearly 60% said they had no challenges to participation. That’s good to hear! The largest area of participation challenges was scheduling conflicts (25%) – that sounds like there are so many choices and so much fun that you have to choose which fun is most important to you! A good problem to have. Cost (12%), accessibility (5%) and transportation (2%) were issues for some people.

There were a lot more topics we could have asked about – and likely will in the future, but we had already taken about 10 minutes of your time and our survey team says that is the outer limit of most people’s patience for surveys! So, thank you for hanging in there. We hope you find this feedback valuable and will continue to participate in future surveys –there are lots of things we will want to know as we embark on the next 30 years here in Grand. The entire team – CAM, Board, and Committees – is listening as we strive to be “the premier active, age restricted, community in Arizona.” Long

10 WAYS

The Board Kept the ‘GRAND’ IN GRAND

There have been significant accomplishments over the past 12 months. On behalf of my fellow Board Members—Bob Aiken, Doug Brady, Jeff Gibbs, Tony Spata, Carol White; I am recapping some of our accomplishments achieved during our term on the Board. We wanted to improve policies, processes, and activities that brought out the best of all of our contributors. It is important to say that the Board could not have done this without the support from the many volunteers, who served on working committees and our talented Association employees who manage our day-to-day operations.

THE BOARD’S TOP TEN LIST

10 Increased number of community activities throughout the year. Happy Hour every week, the return of Wine Down Wednesdays, more live music events and pool parties, just to name a few.

9 Dedicated the long-awaited Veterans’ Monument. The monument recognizes the lives dedicated to service, sacrifice for others, and the families who support them.

8 Began the ‘Discovery’ Phase 1 of the Large Project Development Process for the Desert Springs Complex and Clay/Photo/Glass Expansion lead by an in-house, certified Project Manager. The teams are defining a list of requirements based on resident input, market research, and Grand’s strategic and financial goals.

7 Approved CAM to move forward on the prioritized Community Project List. It is our comprehensive list of projects that we want to take action on and will be reviewed every quarter. It replaces the old ‘CARE Fund List.’

6 Approved new color palettes for common area buildings. Painting started on the Cimarron campus buildings in March. More to follow!

5 Approved the updated Residential Design Guidelines for your home. This includes ‘back yard living’ concepts that compete with newer HOAs. The newly expanded ‘Plant List’ provides you with more details and living examples are being planted along our trails and at the Palm Center.

4 Completed this year’s golf enhancements. The Granite Falls North enhancements include greens, bunkers, tee boxes and replacement of the old driving mats with a new T-line. Also, expanded the snack bar shade area and purchased new furniture. Updates to Cimarron and Desert Springs snack bars are coming soon!

3 Cancelled the 10-year Compass [Unidine] contract for food and beverage service effective last October. This means Grand is no longer in the restaurant business and no longer involved in a profit-sharing agreement. Our golf staff took over the golf snack bars the very next day with no service interruption for our golfers.

2 Appointed Jeff Hochman as GM. He is a resource with a wealth of experience at Grand. He has a passion for the job and believes in ‘team.’ He is working on improving operational efficiency and results for our residents. He and his team are keeping the ‘grand’ in Grand for all of us.

1 Reached lease agreements with Westside Concepts to manage the restaurant at Granite Falls, the Grand Café and manage our bar service. Westside took over the Café and bar service in late December. Maple & Rye opened on March 12.

In other news…

n Our overall financial health is good. The Operating, Reserve and CARE funds support day-to-day operations, maintenance and repairs and plans for future renovations.

n Water is a precious resource and we continue to be proactive with the newly adopted Water Sustainability Policy.

n We fulfilled our promise to keep the community informed about the fire recovery at The Falls with weekly eblasts until we received the certificate for occupancy.

n We extended Angela’s lease through May 2026.

n The Technology Advisory Committee is making good progress on assessing a ‘Technology Information Roadmap’ for Grand. Recommendations are expected this summer.

n We approved nearly $200,000 in small projects that were proposed by your fellow residents.

n The newly formed volunteer Market Research Team conducted two community surveys to gather resident input. More surveys are on the horizon.

Our community runs as well as it does due to the support of committees, staff, and the Board. Volunteerism is growing. In 2023, we added 50 more volunteer roles, and 39 were ‘first timers.’ We know our residents represent a wide range of skills, talent, and knowledge that we want to tap into. This month there is a call for volunteers to apply for positions on the Board Advisory Committees. Please consider applying. We need you in order to continue making The Grand, grand.

C.H.A.P.S. NEEDS YOU

We are looking for Grand men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. Call the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us! You may also find more information about C.H.A.P.S. (including an application form to join) at livegrandaz.com – Volunteer Central – C.H.A.P.S. Resident Patrol

Vacation Watch

A VALUABLE SERVICE FOR SECURITY OF VACANT HOUSES

Vacation Watch is a popular service of C.H.A.P.S. for homeowners who will be away for at least two weeks. This is the time of year when we receive a large number of requests from residents for a periodic property check. If you wish to use this service, here is what you need to do.

Submit a request form: Forms are available at the Palm Center at the Welcome Desk and the Membership Office. You can also download a form at livegrandaz.com under the services/forms heading. You will need to include contact information for a keyholder we can call if there are any issues that cannot wait until you return. Return completed forms to the Membership Office. This service is free, but we appreciate donations to cover various incidental expenses.

Prepare your house: Lock all exterior doors and patio doors including the front door security door. Vacation Watch patrols check doors and windows on every visit. Inspect your irrigation system for leaks and other problems that may require a call to your keyholder. If you have a water feature, be certain there is no standing water. Trim vegetation that would tell potential intruders that you are not home. Be sure your house number lights and other outdoor lights are working. Ask your keyholder or other neighbor to pick up newspapers and advertising materials,

another signal that your house is vacant. C.H.A.P.S. does not report homeowner violations to the Standards Office.

Call if you return early: At times, Vacation Watch patrols discover that a house is occupied because residents have returned before the date on the request form. If you want to avoid a patrol member ringing your doorbell in the morning, call C.H.A.P.S. at 623-546-7553 to let us know that you no longer need this service.

Here are the most frequent issues discovered by Vacation Watch patrols:

n Newspaper/advertisements on driveway/ doorway

n Patio screen door not secured

n Homeowner home/no notification of early return

Evening Patrol

C.H.A.P.S. also performs a service called Evening Patrol. Teams of two drive around in the evening and check for open garage doors, streetlights that are not operational and any suspicious activity. The community is divided into six zones. A patrol team is assigned to a zone by the C.H.A.P.S. dispatcher. The zone is methodically driven turn by turn as instructed by the navigator. When an open garage door is spotted, the team stops and notifies the homeowner. When we see a non-functioning streetlight we

stop, record the pole number, and file a report with APS. Evening Patrol is no more than two hours.

To Volunteer

We are looking for volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We supply vehicles and training. Call the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553, talk to any C.H.A.P.S. member or attend one of our monthly meetings if you are interested in joining us. Everyone is invited to our meeting on April 23 at 1:30pm in the Sonoran Plaza to learn more about our activities.

With a band that is as talented as it is passionate, you’ll be treated to a performance that captures the essence of Buffett’s music and the lifestyle it embodies.

But the music is only half the fun! Buffett’s Margaritaville also boasts the most colorful stage you’ve ever seen. From palm trees to tiki bars to beach balls, the stage is a sensory explosion that perfectly captures the laid-back, beachy vibe of Buffett’s music. And the performers themselves? They’re not

just talented, they’re also having the time of their lives. With infectious energy and an undeniable passion for the music, they’ll have you feeling like you’re right there with them, sipping on a frozen margarita and soaking up the sun.

So come on down to Buffett’s Margaritaville and get ready for a night of excitement, fun, and unforgettable music. It’s the perfect escape from the daily grind and a celebration of the good life. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable experience!

WEEDS

Friendly Reminder From Standards

We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in The Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

Election 2024 Wrap Up

Congratulations to the 4 candidates who were selected in this year's election: Gabriele Dawson received 2,894 votes, Thomas Gusich–2,720 votes, Rene Mitchell–2,355 votes, and Ben Serns–2,146 votes; and a thank you to the other 3 candidates, who didn't win, but stepped up to serve our community: Tom Braga–1,985 votes, Stephanie Sloggett-O’Dell–1,938 votes, and Rebecca Kanninen–1,640 votes.

This year 4,274 votes were recorded with 43.7% of homeowners voting, compared to last year when the total number of votes was 4,249. Most homeowners cast their votes electronically - 3,981 (93.1%); there were 190 paper ballots and 103 telephone votes. So, all 3 methods of voting were used. Of the 9,775 voter letters that were mailed out in those window envelopes with Important Board Election Information stamped across the front in red, only 95 were returned as undeliverable.

One of our goals this year was more resident involvement during the campaign cycle; you did not disappoint. The resident turnout at both the Campaign Kick-off at the Palm Center and the Meet and Greet in the ballroom was greater than last year and far exceeded our expectations. We had the largest crowd ever at this year's debate. We expected 250 and more than 400 attended. A big thank you to the housekeeping staff who not only did the original setup but also brought all those extra chairs into the ballroom. Residents were anxious to talk directly to candidates at the Candidate Roundtable in the Chapparal Center. Attendance was planned at 100, double the number of attendees last year, and 165 residents were present.

We launched an improved communication program this year including: frequent reminders in News of the Day, access via livegrandaz.com to candidate statements, candidate interview videos (an average of 1,550 views), video recordings of both the Candidate Meet and Greet event on Feb. 19 (1,147 views) and the Candidate Debate on Feb 26 (1,473 views), and a How to Vote video (880 views).

The Grand Election Team wishes to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of staff members without whom successful campaign events and collateral material can be provided for Grand residents: Chris Helton and Rachel Magnan from the Communications Dept. and Denise Alessi, Grand’s Volunteer Program Director. Without their work you never would have seen so many News of the Day articles, the banners displayed throughout the campus, postings on the website, and the recordings available for viewing throughout the past few weeks. Denise also took charge of all our catering needs for campaign events; you have her to thank for those yummy treats. Our CAM liaison, Theresa Fleck, provides unbelievable support to GET and to the candidates; from room set-ups, meeting notes, all campaign-related documentation to coordinating the necessary interface with Vote

Now, she works tirelessly to ensure the election cycle is handled professionally.

I want to express appreciation for a few other people who work mostly behind the scenes to provide our residents with a thorough and efficient election experience - our voting partner, Vote-Now, who consistently provides us with a secure, accurate, and seamless voting system, and staff in the Membership Office who assist with paper ballots and miscellaneous resident needs in voting. None of this could be accomplished without the untold volunteer hours, hard work, and dedication to the process by the Grand Election members - Sherry Douglas, Annie Gregory, Suzanne McFadden, Barbara Minick, and Bill Shields. General Manager Jeff Hochman, under whose authority we function, has been incredibly supportive and has provided guidance to ensure we are always operating within AZ HOA law, Grand’s governing documents, and common sense. And finally, I want to thank the members of this community who took the time to express positive comments about the ease of the voting process and for GET’s efforts to conduct the election in such a professional manner.

In a valley in northern California on January 24, 1847, a man named James Marshall discovered flakes of gold in a creek at a place called Sutter’s Mill. That discovery set off a worldwide explosion of interest. Men and women came from all corners of the earth and firmly believed that they could simply come to America and pick up gold everywhere and become rich. People came. It wasn’t that simple. SWARTZ, GINGER

Meets 1 time on Tu 4/2/24

2 PM–3:30 PM | $15 | Havasupai/Maricopa

The problems of joining poetry to rock music are perhaps best illustrated in Joni Mitchell’s “The Hissing of Summer Lawns,” and Patti Smith’s “Horses.” On the one hand, Mitchell took insignificant personal experience and created her 7th studio album that primarily provided melodies for her short stories. On the other, Patti Smith had

many of the same problems translating her poetry and writing to music, creating her reputation as a poetess singer. Both musicians are also known as published poets. This is the third of a threepart series that looks at six classic rockers and musicians who were also published poets. We’ll discuss the artistic personalities of both Smith and Mitchell, listen to some of their music, and look at examples of their published poetry.

An art exhibition opened February 17, 1913, in New York City that shocked the country and changed our perception of beauty. WASHINGTON & LAFAYETTE

SORENSEN, KEN

Meets 1 time on We 5/22/24

9:30 AM–11 AM | $15 | Havasupai/Maricopa

Sometimes in history, there are friendships that transform circumstances. Where two people who were strangers, get acquainted, work together and accomplish wonderful things. Such a friendship took place in early American history. The American Commander in chief was George Washington. He was struggling to keep his army intact and fed. He was struggling with keeping Congress focused on the American war effort. It was a difficult time for him. The Frenchman who came to America was the Marquis de Lafayette. He came with a military background, youthful exuberance, a genuine dislike for all things British and a large checkbook. These men united under the concept that America should be free and England was standing in the way. Their friendship made our early success story possible. The return tour by Lafayette to America in the 1820s allowed our country to say thank you. Come and hear their stories.

DRAMA & COMEDY CLUB

THE GRAND’S “COMMUNITY THEATER”

The Grand Drama & Comedy Club is the Grand’s Community Theater. We live our motto, “On Stage, Back Stage, A Place for Everyone” and welcome everyone to our club where everyone has a place. Everyone is not an actor, and many members use their talents in costuming, make-up, marketing, and communication. Do you like to redecorate? You might be a wonderful set designer. Are you a DIY kind of guy? Or gal? Join the construction crew building sets, or join a “painting party” to turn flats into garden scenes. Smile! Be an usher!

Recently CAM, the Drama Club and the Music Club jointly purchased a state of the art Light Board. We need volunteers to run this vital part of all stage productions. Get in on the training now and volunteer to learn a new skill. Please contact Denise Alessi, CAM’s Volunteer Manager, at denise.alessi@ livegrand.com for more info and to volunteer. You do not have to be a member of the Drama Club to be involved.

This year our Annual Variety Show celebrates 25 Years! Our Grandettes will be featured again, but we are always open to new members. Dancing is one of the best and most fun form of excerise. Please contact

Robin Kachurak, Dance Committee Chairperson, at 818-795-4859. Don’t miss the show, April 11 – 14, with two matinees.

Not interested in learning a lot of lines but always had a desire to be on stage? Our Cabaret Players present 3 comedy performances a year by actors who use their scripts as part of their performance – no memorization needed. Always a sell out, we perform in the Cimarron Theater. We offer so many opportunities to learn new skills and to develop our creativity, and all for only $10. For information on all the many ways to participate “on stage or back stage”, click the QR code on this page or visit our webpage: granddrama.com.

FISHING CLUB

The Grand Fishing Club is dedicated to promoting both spin fishing and fly fishing. Club members take an active role not only in the promotion of fishing, but environmental sustainability as well. Many club members have years of fishing experience and have fished all over the United States, in Canada and other parts of the world. The club sponsors single day fishing trips locally to Lake Pleasant, Deadhorse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, Bartlett Lake east of Cave Creek and the Salt River. Multiday trips include the White Mountains, Lees Ferry near Flagstaff, the San Juan River in New Mexico near Farmington, Alaska and Canada. In Grand, the club helps support the viability of Lake Nine adjacent to the 9th Hole on the Desert Springs Golf Course as a fishery for all Grand residents and their families. The Grand Fishing Club meets the first Tuesday of the month from October through April. Coupled with the various club fishing trips, members are also committed to making our community a much better place in which to live. Volunteer opportunities include Project Healing Waters in support of disabled veterans, the Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge program, the City of Surprise Adaptive Fishing program and the Phoenix VA Rehabilitation Hospital. In addition, we provide equipment and guidance to Grand residents to take their grandchildren fishing at Lake Nine. For more information, check out our website at www.scgfishing.weebly.com or to contact an administrative staff member please email infoscgfishing122@gmail.com.

RESIDENT FISHING IN THE GRAND

• Fishing in The Grand is limited to Grand residents or their guests. Guests must be accompanied by a Grand resident while they fish.

• The Grand lakes are private and therefore a state fishing license is not required.

• Fishing is only permitted on the non-golf side of Lake Nine (near Angela’s restaurant, the tennis courts and the dog parks) and the Upper Lake (near the Adobe Center). The red line on the image below denotes shorelines where fishing is permitted. Fishing is not permitted at any of the other Grand lakes.

The lakes contain large-mouthed bass, sunfish/

bluegill, catfish, and carp. The lakes are stocked periodically with large-mouthed bass and sunfish/bluegill.

• The Grand lakes are catch-and-release only to maintain an adequate fish stock for everyone’s enjoyment. Some tips to limit trauma to fish include:

o Use barbless hooks

o Use rubber nets

o Limit the time a fish is out of the water. Keep the fish wet.

o Carry hook removal devices. Pliers or hemostats work well.

o Limit fighting time while landing a fish.

o Do not drop or allow the fish to touch the ground.

• Only single, barbless hooks may be used while fishing. Children 10 years of age and under may fish using worms. All others must use artificial lures and are not permitted to use live bait.

• Share a passion for fishing, fun and the outdoors? Visit the Grand Fishing Club’s website at scgfishing.weebly.com/for information about joining the Grand Fishing Club.

If you want to work on your short game, are new to golf, or just want to enjoy 9 holes from a shorter distance, give us a try. We would love to have you as our guest! We are a relaxed, funloving group. For more information, visit 150gc-24. golfgenius.com

GOLF—LADIES GRAND NINERS

The Ladies Grand Niners has approximately 300 members. We prefer to play nine holes of golf rather than the traditional 18. Desert Springs is our home course, though we also play Cimarron, Granite Falls North and Granite Falls South during our season. We play by USGA Rules and expect our members to have a general knowledge of the Rules of Golf and some golf experience. Our motto is “Fun, Friendship, and Golf"!

For information on how to join our club through Arizona Golf Association go to ladiesgrandniners. golfgenius.com and click on the link for our membership information or contact our membership co-chairs at membership.ladiesgrandniners@gmail. com.

The Ladies Grand Niners membership year is October 1st to September 30th. We play golf in alternating shotgun or tee time formats on Tuesdays, November through May. Members sign up to play shotguns at either 12:30 or 3:00 or tee times between 12:00 and 3:00. In the summer months, members can choose to play nine holes of golf between 6-7AM or 18 holes at 7 AM.

Members are required to have an active membership in the Arizona Golf Association (AGA) and be a resident of Sun City Grand with a valid Community Association Member (CAM) number. Members are required to have a GHIN handicap index. If you do not have a GHIN handicap index, you must establish one. A 9-hole handicap index is also required to be eligible for prizes in any of our monthly Play-ofthe-Day events and for our annual President's Cup Tournament. An 18-hole World Handicap System (WHS) GHIN Handicap Index is established by playing six 9-hole rounds or a combination of 9and 18-hole rounds to equal 54 holes. The 18-hole handicap index is converted to a 9-hole handicap index for our league.

A member must play with the Ladies Grand Niners a minimum of five 9-hole rounds to be eligible to play in the annual President's Cup tournament (held in March each year).

SOCIAL GAMES

Social Games Charter Club is comprised of 5 Special Interest Groups. These interest groups are as follows:

CHESS

Tucked away in The Grand, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, we play chess and forget about everything else. It’s true, while playing chess with us, you think only of chess, an inexpensive (no membership fees) and calorie-burning activity (yes, it’s true, you burn lots of calories playing chess).

You’ll need to know the basics as we won’t be spending too much time teaching, but we are welcoming and friendly to everyone, even if you aren’t Bobby Fischer! So, check us out, Mate. Just show up, with or without a board and pieces, and be ready for a rewarding

escape. For dates and locations of play, call Marty at 203-979-1194, or Paula at 623-293-2884. Next move is yours. Let's play.

CRIBBAGE

If you have played Cribbage in the past and would like to join us, please come by on Tuesday morning 8:15 to 8:30 to sign in. Play begins at 8:45 in the Pima Room. Experience is necessary as this is a fast moving game. We play 9 games and rotate each game to play a different opponent. Each game is timed for 17 minutes. If you are not done in that time frame, whoever is ahead scores the points for that game. We collect $4 from each player, which is paid out as prize money at the end of the session. Prize payouts are based on the number in attendance. Should you get “skunked”, you pay a quarter for every skunk. Please do not bring large bills as we cannot make change. Should you decide you would like to join, you may play twice before paying our dues.

If you would like to learn to play Cribbage, we suggest that you download the app and play at home to understand the basics and point counting as well as scoring of the game. We have no teaching tables available. For more info, email: jeward28@gmail.com

HAND & FOOT

We play every Tuesday at 1:00 and Friday at 6:00 in the Pima Room at Chaparral Center. PLEASE ARRIVE 15 MINUTES EARLY FOR TABLE ASSIGNMENTS.

We play two games and draw cards for random partners each game. You will need $4. in quarters and $4 in bills for the two games. If you have your own cards (6 decks) and shuffler, please bring them. We are currently playing “Progressive Hand & Foot”. For a copy of the rules or questions, please contact Joy Kreick at joykreick@gmail.com

Come and play! We’re a friendly group and try our best to be inclusive no matter your skill level.

RUMMIKUB

The RUMMIKUB (rummi-tile) Board game is a FUN game for 2-5 people per table (pronounced Rum-meycube) Join us for this tabletop game that is played with tiles that have easy to see “real numbers” in 4 colors. It’s been a top worldwide board game for over 40 years.

Call ahead for a FREE lesson if you’re new, need a refresher, or are experienced! Players love it because it contains components of Canasta, Gin Rummy, Bridge and Mahjong. It gently stimulates the brain while combining both luck with strategic thinking. Hope you’ll join us to have fun and find old and new friends. Come learn the new Joker Rules that have increased the fun!

Special dues: $10 pays you up until the end of 2024. We meet from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the Pima Room near the Grand Café at the Chaparral Center on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays and 2nd and 4th Saturdays. We’re a friendly group and play a friendly game peppered with laughs and FUN! Also, we’ll try to place you with players on your level. Call for info: Barbara Powers 480-567-2533 email: Barbs.rum@ gmail.com.

STAMP COLLECTING

We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm in the Pima Room in the Chaparral Center. Meetings are always open to anyone interested in collecting postage stamps, whether to learn about stamp collecting, discover the worth of an existing collection or to donate a collection to a non-profit tax exempt foundation. Our friendly group will

Grand’s LGBTQ Interest Group Update…

Since we are in the middle of our Annual Membership Drive, it seems fitting to share a Group update with the Grand community. When we last wrote in The Grand LIFESTYLES, we were amid the Covid epidemic and like so many other groups, we struggled to remain connected but did so thanks to the wonders of Zoom. Also, like so many other clubs and organizations have

since experienced, it’s been a challenge to regroup and simply “pick up where we left off”.

Ever since our inception 8 years ago this March, The Grand’s LGBTQ Interest Group’s purpose remains unchanged. Our intent was to “Create community and enhance the quality of life for our members and allies who are residents of Sun City Grand, together with our LGBTQ neighbors, seeking to be a positive presence in our region and throughout the State of Arizona”. Our Core Values are Community, Friendship, Equality, and Inclusion. A recent member survey revealed that the opportunity to meet likeminded people in a social setting is indeed achieved. We continue our numerous social activities on a regular basis; monthly Breakfast Club, potlucks, “Shout-Outs” (spontaneously organized activities), and occasional outings. Ongoingly, we’ve contributed to and participated in various community efforts; volunteering at both local Food Banks, Surprise’s MLK Day events, Dysart School System, One-inTen Youth Advocacy Program, etc. As in any citizen group, members also participate in various local faith-based organizations, community programs and committees, and arts organizations. We also support and remain connected with our neighboring West Valley LGBTQ Clubs and Groups as well. We look forward to welcoming new friends in our shared community. So, if our Group sounds interesting to you, and you would like more information, find us on social media at www.facebook.com/scglgbt ; feel free to contact us on email at scg.lgbt@yahoo.com or through our website at: scglgbt.com .

GRAND REPUBLICANS INTEREST GROUP

Grand Republicans meets the third Saturday morning each month at Church on the Green (19051 N. RH Johnson Blvd, Sun City West.) Doors open at 8:30, coffee and pastries available by 9:00, with meetings starting at 9:30. Guests are always welcome. There is a $2 fee for non-members to help defray the cost of the meeting room, and a tip jar is available to help pay for the pastries and donuts. We are especially reaching out to “right-minded” and open-minded Independents.

At our February 17 meeting we heard from three candidates all vying for the same District 8 seat being vacated by Debbie Lesko: Blake Masters, who ran for the US Senate in 2022; Arizona State Senator Anthony Kern, currently representing LD22; and Trent Franks, who was Ms. Lesko’s predecessor, representing Congressional District 8 from 2003 to 2017. Each brought compelling remarks, and each was respectful of the others.

At press time our March 16 general meeting looms large. We are preparing to meet and hear from Sheriff Mark Lamb, who is running for the US Senate seat currently held by the retiring Kyrsten Sinema. We also look forward to hearing from Mr. Ben Toma, Speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives from CD 27. Toma will explain why he believes he is the right choice to replace our CD 8 representative, Debbie Lesko, in the U.S. Congress.

Our April 19 meeting will feature Erik Hayes of Turning Point Action; Don Hiatt, running against Stephen Richer to be the Maricopa County Recordera position that definitely needs to be changed, we feel; and Stephen Walker, Candidate for County Attorney. For May 18 we are excited to announce the one and only Kari Lake! She is running as a MAGA, Trumpendorsed, America first candidate for the U.S. Senate being vacated by Kyrsten Sinema.

All of this information and much more is included on our website: grandrepublicans.com. Please check there on a regular basis. We may well be the group you are looking for this vital Election season 2024.
