SUMMER TRANSITION
deep tine aerify the fairways with ¾ inch solid tines. The ground was so hard the first couple of years these practices were implemented that the tines would bend or snap.
Brandon Dougherty, PGA Director of Golf
As spring/summer approaches we would like to remind everyone that all golf courses go through two transitions a year, summer and fall. The summer transition is vital to the long-term health of the base bermuda turf. Throughout the winter we compact & damage the base bermuda turf while it is dormant and must implement additional agronomic practices to recover the turf. This period of recovery is what we consider transition and will create periods where playability & aesthetics are impacted.
Below are some of the practices & expectations to anticipate during the recovery process.
n Remove the winter ryegrass with a selective herbicide. This would remove all the cool-season turf for the Bermuda grass to have 3-months of noncompetitive growth.
n Close each course for 3-weeks in the summer to expedite transition (this year each course will close for 10 days due to the Granite Falls North renovation).
n Staff will core aerify the golf course tees, fairways and roughs.
n An outside contractor will then
n Staff will continue to heavily topdress the fairways during the summer closure to improve the soil profile.
n Put down sod in areas that have no sign of Bermuda grass growth in a 100 square foot area. This was about of an acre of sod plus per golf course when the program first started and there are almost no areas today that fit the original criteria for sodding.
n Double aerify and heavily topdress the greens to create less interruptions during the summer golf when this practice needs to be done.
n Hot Spots—The rye grass dies out faster than the Bermuda grass can cover the course. All courses will have hot spots, which are areas of bare soil until the Bermuda covers that area. This usually takes 8 to 12 weeks for the Bermuda coverage to fill in all over the course.
n Rough—Roughs will thrive better when we allow the roughs to grow higher at this time.
n Turf loss—There will be loss of turf where areas of rye grass has died out and the Bermuda has not covered that area yet.
The staff appreciates your patience and support as this necessary work is performed for the long-term success of the golf program.
Granite Falls North Renovation
As most of our golfing community has noticed, we started the construction work on Granite Falls North this fall. This included renovating bunkers, replacing irrigation heads & swing joints in the roughs, & turf reduction in certain areas. The construction was halted in January to minimize the impact on play during the peak season. We are excited to restart the work this spring so we can finish the remaining bunkers, construct the new forward orange tees, & resurface the greens. Our tentative plan is to kill the existing greens with applications starting the first week of May. We will pull GFN off the Chelsea lottery at this time and allow those that wish to play “links style” greens the opportunity to book on GFN five days
DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS

in advance (or less) until the course closes in the middle of May.
Our goal is to open GFN this fall, and we cannot wait to see the final
product. With the support from the USGA, GAC, & BOD it was decided that we will not be overseeding GFN coming out of the renovation. This will allow for the bermuda base to have a full year to recover without competing for resources with the winter overseed. While the playing conditions will be firm and fast for about ten weeks, we are confident that this practice will give us the best playing conditions year-round as well as the best long-term health for the bermuda turf. This will be a one-year case study to evaluate the cost/benefit of not overseeding one course per year. Below are some of the benefits that were presented to the Board of Directors during the budgeting process.
As the drought continues across Arizona, federal and state water restriction will begin to restrict water use on golf courses. In order to be a proactive leader of water conservation, the Board of Directors will not overseed the Granite Falls North golf course
with winter grass in the fall of 2023. A pigment will be applied to the non‐overseeded fairway turf, in order to maintain a pristine appearance equal to the other three overseeded golf courses. This practice will be evaluated annually to determine the health of the non‐overseeded turf and if continued will rotate to each golf course annually.
The benefits to the Association with this water conservation practice will result in savings of $100K winter grass seed. In addition, benefits to be realized, 5,000 additional rounds or $150,000 in revenue are projected as a result of the golf course not closing for the winter transition and no inconvenience to our golfing customers with the course remaining open during the winter transition. Other efficiencies with a non‐overseeded golf course, chance of eliminating/limiting frost delays that will increase rounds/revenue and the opportunity to begin tee times earlier than the other over‐seeded courses.
Thank you, Brandon
Dougherty

National Walking Day
Research Says Walking This Much Per Week Extends Your Life
By Aislinn Kotifani
Allison Adams Fitness Director
April 5th is National Walking Day. We want to use this month to encourage you to utilize walking as an accessible tool towards maintaining or bettering your health. The weather is perfect to enjoy our neighborhoods. On National Walking Day, The Grand Fitness is hosting resident David Hawes at Cimarron at 9am, for his presentation on The Power of Walking. This is a free event. We encourage you to sign up at Cimarron, in-person or by phone, but walk-ins (no pun intended) are also welcome. This month’s article was published in 2023 and retrieved from https://www. bluezones.com/2018/07/researchsays-walking-this-much-per-weekextends-your-life/. This month will prepare us for our summer walking challenge this summer. So get ready…
Recent studies show that walking as little as two hours per week can help you live longer and reduce the risk of disease. The study from the American Cancer Society followed 140,000 older adults and reported that those who walked six hours per week had a lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, and cancer than those who were not active, but that walking even as little as two hours per week could begin to reduce the risk of disease and help you live a longer, healthier life.
“Our bodies were designed to move,” said Dr. David Agus, Professor of Medicine and Engineering at the University of Southern California.
The world’s longest-lived people don’t pump iron, run marathons, or join gyms. Instead, they live in environments that constantly nudge them into moving without thinking about it. They grow gardens and don’t have mechanical conveniences for house and yard work. They have jobs that require them to move or get up frequently. And they walk every single day. Almost everywhere.
In Amish communities in North America, one study showed that the average woman logged 14,000 steps per day and the average man logged 18,000 steps per day, and both genders averaged about 10,000 on their day of rest. These Amish communities also had the lowest rates of obesity of any community in North America. This study eventually hit the media and began the movement to reach at least 10,000 steps per day.
WALKING BENEFITS:
n Activates lymphatic system
n Eliminates toxins
n Fights infection
n Strengthens immunity
Your environment greatly impacts your
activity level, but there are ways to nudge yourself to move more if you do not live in a walkable community:
TAKE SEVERAL SMALL WALKS. Take your dog out for a short morning jaunt around the block. Walk instead of drive to pick up workday lunches. Step outside after dinner with your family. Research shows it is better for you to break up your movement throughout the day than to work out for 30-40 minutes in the gym and sit all day.
WALK TO THE GROCERY STORE. If your location safely allows you to, walk to the grocery store. Though you may not be able to purchase a week’s worth of groceries in a single trip, you can buy the freshest ingredients and return again later in the week.
PARK IN A SPOT FURTHEST FROM THE BUILDING.
If you work in the suburbs, in a mall, or a business park with very few parking options, just choose to park far away from the entrance to add a few more steps to your day.
WALK 5 MINUTES EACH HOUR. Get up out of your desk and take a round of the office. Fill up your water bottle. Get outside to maximize benefits, if possible.
TAKE ONE LONG WALK OF 30-40 MINUTES.
Recruit a friend (or your mate!) to take a post-work walk. Forty minutes will fly by before you even realize how far you’ve gone.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE GRAND FOR THE SUMMER
Article submitted by Dennis Hanscom C.H.A.P.S. member
Before you leave The Grand, whether it be for a few weeks or for several months, there are many things you should do to protect your house and property. Your house should give the impression it is currently occupied, not vacant. C.H.A.P.S.* suggests you take the following precautions before you leave:
1. Lock all windows and doors, including your security door(s). And be sure to lock your pool gates.
2. Trim back your front, side, and backyard bushes, shrubs and trees; not just for a well-kept appearance, but to eliminate hiding places for intruders. Nothing says “WE ARE NOT HOME” like a yard filled with over-grown landscaping, weeds and debris.
3. Check to be sure your house number lights and outdoor landscaping lights are working. Replace any burned out bulbs.
4. Remove any ripened citrus from your trees. Fallen or low hanging citrus can attract rodents.
5. Drain water from backyard water features. Treat any remaining water with appropriate chemicals. Cover your water feature with a tarp if it is in a location to collect monsoon rain. Eliminate any standing water, which breeds mosquitoes.
6. Set your irrigation system for the hotter summer season. Make sure your
watering system is in good condition. A water leak not only will increase your water bill, but it will also show that your house is not occupied.
7. Let a trusted neighbor know when you will be away so they can be alert for any suspicious activity and pick up any newspapers, flyers or business cards left at your house.
C.H.A.P.S.* performs a free of charge service called Vacation Watch. When residents are away from home for two weeks or more, they are encouraged to fill out a Vacation Watch form which is available in the Membership Office at the Palm Center, as well as online at suncitygrand.com. Completed forms are to be returned to the Membership Office in the Palm Center. Three criteria are required for homeowners to use this program: (1) homeowner must be away for a minimum of two weeks; (2) a keyholder must be identified on the request form. C.H.A.P.S.* volunteers will walk around the home checking for unlocked doors, unlocked or broken windows, etc. The goal is to make the house look occupied. When an irregularity is found, the designated keyholder will be notified. C.H.A.P.S.* does not report homeowner violations to the Standards Office.
C.H.A.P.S.* also performs a volunteer service called Evening Patrol. Teams of two drive around in the evening and check for open garage doors, and streetlights that are not operational. And, we report any other suspicious activity.
The SCG community is broken down into 6 zones. When a patrol team goes out on patrol, they will only patrol one zone as determined by the Dispatcher who mans the desk in the C.H.A.P.S.* office. The zone is methodically driven by turn-byturn navigation as called out to the driver by the navigator. When an open door is spotted the team stops and notifies the homeowner the garage door is open. Our goal is to provide this notification for the sake of the homeowner’s safety. We also stop when the garage is open high enough for someone or something to crawl under. When we see a non-functioning streetlight we stop, record the pole number and file a report with APS. Evening Patrol is a 2-hour shift.
TO VOLUNTEER: We are looking for SCG men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. Call Carol Murr (CAM) 623-5467432 or the C.H.A.P.S.* office 623-5467553 if you may be interested in joining us. We invite our neighbor homeowners to our meeting on April 25, 1:30 p.m. at the Sonoran Plaza to learn more about C.H.A.P.S.*
DONATIONS: C.H.A.P.S.* welcomes all donations. Those wishing to make donations may do so at the Membership Office. Make checks payable to Sun City Grand Community Association and designate “Donation to C.H.A.P.S.”

National Volunteer Appreciation Month
April is National Volunteer Month, a great time to honor the impressive, inspiring contributions our Grand volunteers make all year long.
National Volunteer Week, first held in 1943 in Canada, was recognized in the United States by Presidential Proclamation in April 1974. Each year, National Volunteer Week celebrates millions of Americans dedicated to volunteerism. It was made official worldwide in 1990 and was re-named National Volunteer Month by President George H.W. Bush.
Volunteering is an integral part of the lives of people around the world. According to 2022 statistics, one in four Americans volunteer, with women being more likely than men to volunteer. Baby Boomers are more likely to volunteer
than any other generation. Volunteering offers many personal benefits as well including increased sense of purpose, improved physical and mental health, and increased socialization. You help the greater community and you have FUN!
We appreciate our Grand volunteers throughout the year, but we take this month to especially recognize the many vital ways they contribute to our community.
From our Board of Directors and many
Committee members to Neighborhood Reps, CHAPS, Welcome Center greeters, Chartered Club volunteers and others, it is an honor to celebrate you!
Thank you for all you do!
Your participation and dedication make a Grand Difference in our community and make The Grand a wonderful place to call home.
For information on how to participate in the many volunteer opportunities in our Grand community scan the QR code to visit Volunteer Central or contact, Volunteer Program Manager, Denise Alessi, at denise.alessi@scgcam.com

FROM WHERE I SIT…
From where I sit there are varying types of textures, hues acquired from nature, and from bottles of many colors.
From where I sit the recollections of recent decisions flood my conscience, struggling against joy, to occupy my mind.
From where I sit a purple drink, a wedge salad, and the promise of pastrami sandwich to come, lodges before me on a surface of stone.
Ten months passed, hundreds of decisions made, value engineering always, disappointments, celebrations, inspections, schedules, disputes and applying pressure, on-going, day by day. But I can point to something that will outlive me. Something that made me part of a team. Something that caused sleepless nights and harried days. Something, that in the end, was worth it.
From where I sit the Restaurant has opened. And that is a wonderful thing.
Where do I sit? At the bar, on a leather stool, on the north side, next to the door. I sit at The Falls.
Cheers!

GRAND SINGERS AND CHORALE
2023 SPRING CONCERT
“THE GLORY OF LOVE”
The 2023 Grand Singers and Chorale Spring Concert is entitled “The Glory of Love”, which embodies the spring season as performed by the 100-voice Chorus and 32-voice Chorale under the direction of Pamela Weir. Acknowledging various examples of love “With You”, we praise America’s passion of baseball at the “Ballgame”, complete with a yummy “Oo, Barbeque!”. Via Words and Music by Billy Hill, our spring concert continues, in a Gospel swing, “The Glory of Love”, and Carole King reminds us that “You’ve Got a Friend”. Let’s not forget clandestine love, which might be found in a sleazy dive (where “Hernando’s Hideaway” wasn’t so hidden) and confessed by Disney’s villains in a medley of three songs. In the end, what could be more important than honoring the love of our country by singing a dramatic arrangement of “God Bless America”? “Never My Love” was a popular love song in the 1960’s and one our Grand Singers enjoy singing. Tickets available online at www. scgrandmusicclub.com or www.suncitygrand. com or the Activities Desk (open M-F from 8 AM to 4 PM). For further information, contact Donna Mills at 623-556-1005.

We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

LAURA LEE PERKINS
Meets 1 time on Th 4/6/23
2:00–4:00 PM FEE: $10 Personal growth doesn’t require you to become a hermit or to change your life completely. But it does require commitment to a simple daily practice. By simple, I mean a minimum of just 3 minutes each day. In our often hectic world of constant demands, are you wondering how you could ever add another commitment to your daily routine? If a daily practice of just 3 minutes a day allowed the other 1437 minutes of your day to flow more easily, would you be willing to try it for 30 days?

WAITING: THE SACRED QUIVERING OF THE SOUL
LAURA LEE PERKINS
Meets 1 time on Mo 4/3/23
2:00–4:00 PM

Life is about soul-making, which requires creativity in how we respond to challenges. No one has an easy walk through life; we are all tested and challenged. Illness, a loved one’s drug use, death, betrayal, suicide and more can cause us to feel derailed, raw and emotionally paralyzed. Some crises are multilayered, involve many people and demand that we wait. Whatever the dilemma, we’re often in a quandary. We yearn to respond, but we don’t know what to do. Patience often grows thin and we can feel confused. Why is this happening? What am I supposed to learn?

When you hear the term, the 1950s, people often think of a simpler time. They think of the explosion of television and rock and roll music. TV shows that dominated that era include: I Love Lucy, Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best and Maverick. They think of civil rights and how the court cases of that decade had effects across the cultural spectrum. Movies came out that dominated the times. The dominant political figure was President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the winning general of D-Day during World War II. The world was struggling with conflicting political agendas and students were taught to hide under their desks in case an atomic bomb went off. Two decades later a Television show came out called Happy Days and that show defined how people viewed the 1950s. It was a simpler time and even a good time. Come and relive those days and see how the major events of that time still have an effect on us today.

DRAMA & COMEDY CLUB
The Grand Drama & Comedy Club offers live
theater entertainment to the Grand community, performing plays and musicals on the Sagebrush Stage, and comedy skits by our Cabaret Players at the Cimarron Nightclub. We live our motto, “On Stage, Back Stage, A Place for Everyone” and welcome everyone to our club because each person has special talents to contribute. Our club welcomes creativity and fosters teamwork and friendship to make everyone feel welcome and productive. We offer so many opportunities to be involved in costuming, make-up, marketing, and communication. Do you like to redecorate? You might be a wonderful set designer. Are you a DIY kind of guy? Or gal? Join the construction crew building sets, or join in for a “painting party” to turn flats into gardens.
We offer training for our sound crew and our lighting team. Here may be a chance to learn a new skill or use your experience in a new rewarding and creative way. For more information, please contact Ove Jakobsen at 256-721-0431 or ovejakobsen@ msn.com for sound or Bob Nix at 623-214-8280 or bobnix@cox.net for lighting info. They are happy to train interested folks.
We also offer dance classes at many levels, sure to fit one of your styles, from beginner to advance tap and jazz. For any inquiries about dance, please contact Robin Kachurak, Dance Committee Chairperson, at 818-795-4859. Our Grandettes, a Grand tradition, will be featured in the 23rd Annual Variety Show, “Great Dames and the Men Who Love Them” this April.
Not interested in learning a lot of lines but always had a desire to be on stage? Our Cabaret Players Committee presents 3 performances a year by actors who use their scripts as part of their performance – no memorization needed. Always a sell out, this venue is small and intimate in the Cimarron Theater. Tickets (only $10) are on sale now for the April show, “Witty Winners and Whiners”, April 6 – 8, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday matinee April 8 at 1:30 p.m.
The Grand tradition of Twenty-three years continues with our 23rd Annual Variety Show, “Great Dames and the Men Who Love Them”, which runs April 12–16, 2023.
Men vacationing in Greece encounter the Goddess Venus, who’s filling in while Aphrodite is on vacation, and quite annoyed by the disruption. This begins a whirlwind of Goddesses, ancient and current “Femme Fatales” and “Ladies of the Evening”, featuring famous and infamous dames of screen and folklore. We will meet lovers and friends, happy and not so happy, married and not. All this is woven into the theme by great songs and splendid performances by the Grandettes. Your favorite vocalists and actors from the Drama Club and the Music Club will be featured. And the “dames” will have plenty of men to romance, tempt, and torment! Meet the brats of Broadway, the divas of the silver screen and the cads they couldn’t resist. There will be a fabulous array of great costumes and beautiful scenery. Not to be missed!
For further info on any items, to purchase tickets for shows, or general info about the Grand Drama & Comedy Club, please visit our webpage: https:// www.granddrama.com

SOCIAL GAMES:
Social Games Charter Club is comprised of 5 Special Interest Groups. These interest groups are as follows:
CHESS:
Tucked away in Sun City Grand, three times a week, we play Chess and forget about everything else. It’s true, while playing Chess with us, you think only of Chess, an inexpensive (no membership fees) and calorie-burning activity (yes, it’s true, you burn lots of calories playing Chess).
You’ll need to know the basics as we won’t be spending too much time teaching, but we are welcoming and friendly to everyone, even if you aren’t Bobby Fischer!
So, check us out, Mate. Just show up, with or without a board and pieces, and be ready for a rewarding escape. We usually meet in the Agua Fria room (Cimarron) at 11:30 -3:30 Monday and Wednesday and the Sago Room at the Palm Center on Friday. This is subject to change, so call us first at 623-293-2884 for Paula, or 203-9791194 for Marty.
CRIBBAGE
We play in the Pima Room at Chaparral Center on Tuesdays from 9:00- 11:30 a.m. We start promptly, so please come at least 15 minutes early to sign up and get acquainted. We collect $4 to play, which is awarded back to the winners. You are invited to play twice as our guest. If you would like to become a member, our dues are $5 per year. Please come join us.
HAND & FOOT
We play every Tuesday at 1:00 in the Pima Room at Chaparral Center and Friday at 6:00 in the Agua Fria Room at Cimarron. We play two games and draw cards for random partners each game. You will need $4. in quarters and $4 in bills for the two games. If you have your own cards (6 decks) and shuffler, please bring them. We are currently playing “Progressive Hand & Foot”. For a copy of the rules or questions, please contact Joy Kreick at joykreick@gmail.com. Come and play! We’re a friendly group and try our best to be inclusive no matter your skill level.

This group is currently meeting in the Palms Center on Tuesdays at 12:30 – 3:30. Drop in the find out about us. If you have any questions call Fran 623-398-7737.

Is a FUN board game played with tiles for 2-4 people and gently exercises your brain. It is similar to Gin Rummy, Mah Jong and Canasta and is easy to learn. To attend, you’ll need to know the basics and come 15 minutes early to check in. If you would like to learn or haven’t played for a while, call/text to arrange private lessons to learn new rules. We have extras, but please bring your own set if you have one.
We play in the PIMA Room at Chaparral Center on the 2nd and 4th Saturday and the 1st and 3rd Thursdays from 11:00-1:00. For more info: Barbara Powers: 480-567-2533 or barbs.rum@ gmail.com.

STITCHER’S
From Joyce Craft, Grand Stitcher member since 1998
I've been a member of Stitchers since the very beginning, 1998! We moved here in 1997 and I belonged to a sewing group in an RV park before coming here so I was anxious to continue getting back into sewing. Our group was very small but very active. There were no "SIGs", that didn't come until much later. We were all just one group and we all did just about everything, sewing, machine embroidery (on very simple embroidery machines), taught each other what we knew how to do, etc., etc. Great times and many wonderful people! Grand Stitchers has grown since 1998. We now have 7 Machine Embroidery Machines, 22 sewing machines, a knitting machine, a long arm and 10 looms. Our members still teach each other and give their time for many charities in our community. We still have a great time and enjoy our time in the “sewing room”.
STITCHERS; FIBER, FABRIC & BEADS
Celebrating 25 years as a Charter Club We Weave and Spin, do all types of Needlework, General Sewing, Machine Em-broidery, Beading, Quilting - and donate our time to help with Community Ser-vice. We have a knitting machine, embroidery machines, sergers, looms, sewing machines and a longarm machine. Stitchers meet Monday through Saturday 9AM - 3PM. Dues are $30 a year. Each day is dedicated to one of the fiber arts Special Interest Groups. Come by the Palm Center, Grand Stichers Room, see what we create, and find out how easy it is to get certified on one of our machines or looms.

TUESDAYS: NEEDLEWORK

Another activi-ty is dedicated to Knitted Knockers. A soft knitted prosthesis for breast cancer patients, all at no cost to recipient.
WEDNESDAYS: QUILTING
We are a group of Quilter who like to cut up material and put it back together in various creative designs. If you know how to piece/quilt, do come join us on any Wednesday. We have a variety of teachers from nationally recognized members to those who would like to pass along their tips, tricks, and techniques. If you don’t know how to piece/quilt, we have classes for that. Meetings are on the second Wednesday of each month. Caring Quilts are on the third Wednesday of each month. Caring Quilts are made by many members, washed, and prepped
for breast cancer surgery patients. We also make Quilts of Valor and Quilts for Organ Donors. There’s always room for finishing those UFOs among fellow members.

SATURDAYS & THURSDAYS: WEAVING AND SPINNING
Weavers and Spinners enjoy working with all kinds of fibers. We learn about the animals and plants that are the fiber's source; we prepare the fiber with cleaning, carding, dyeing and blending it. Fiber is spun into yarn using spindles and traditional and electric spinning wheels. We utilize many types of looms on which we create fabric for household items, clothing and art pieces.

WEEDS Friendly Reminder from Standards
46 Grand Lifestyles | April 2023 | suncitygrand.com
We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.
Don your athletic shoes and drop by. Any of our members would be happy to assist you in getting started. We have paddles ready for your use. We look forward to welcoming YOU. First three club visits are complimentary. Just sign in, with your email and phone #, and tell us you’re new! Yearly membership just $15.

If you are willing to learn, we are there to provide coaching and camaraderie. Our practices have organized sets that are geared from beginner-level swimmers to advanced swimmers and competitors. We focus on technique to improve your strokes, your stamina, your speed and your endurance. For more information contact swimnut@me.com

Generally, at 8 am. This time is adjusted during the year for warmer/cooler temps in summer/winter. We also have league play with 5 other retirement communities in late winter through early spring. We will provide horseshoes for you to use as well as assistance on "pitching" horseshoes if you might need/want. We can also assist in helping you order your own horseshoes when you find out how much fun the game really is. Open to all ladies and men. The horseshoe pits are located just right of the Dell Web softball diamond and storage building on Mountain View Blvd.

MOMS LIKE ME SUPPORT GROUP
Moms Like Me is a support group whose goal is to reach out to the hurt and hearts of mothers who have experienced the loss of a child. Every day there are thousands of mothers who have lost a child who are living in the depths of despair, feeling they have lost all hope. Our support group falls under the banner of Umbrella Ministries, a network of mothers throughout the United States who have lost a child, and whose soul mission is to reach out with the Lord’s love, to broken hearted mothers. The ways of losing child can be quite broad, from infants to adult children, miscarriages, to a still born death of a full-term pregnancy. Other mothers have lost a child through suicide, a fatal accident or illness. The death of a child is different than any other loss and only a mother who has experienced that loss can relate to the grief that a mother is feeling. We plan to meet twice a month in Sun City Grand, location to be determined later. If you have any questions please call or text Nina Montgomery at 623-606-3160.

QR CODE: A GUIDE TO THE BASICS
Can you please tell me what QR Codes are? Are there any safety issues to consider?
QR stands for Quick Response. These codes were developed in the 1990s by a subsidiary of Toyota, called Denso Wave, as a way to track automobiles throughout the manufacturing process—but today QR codes are mainly used to transmit web addresses to mobile phones. QR codes are used increasingly in restaurants to access online menus but also in advertisements, store promotions, food packaging, business cards, airline tickets, etc. to provide customers quick access to websites. Even here in The Grand, QR codes are utilized on your CAM ID card, and the Drama and Comedy Club provides QR codes to access digital programs. The Arizona Dept of Health can generate a QR code that contains all a resident’s COVID vaccination data. In summary, QR codes are here to stay. HOWEVER, there are always precautions, so continue beyond the “howto” for safety tips.
How to scan a QR code
n For iPhones, open your Camera App and hold the phone so the QR code (the black square with pixels) appears in the viewfinder. When the phone recognizes the code, the corners of the code become framed in yellow. Just tap that yellow notification to open the link associated with the code.
• Option: iPhones include a Code Scanner widget that can be included on its Control Center, which is accessed by swiping down
from the top-right edge of the phone when you are on the home screen. (Over 20 iPhone widgets can be customized for your phone’s Control Center: Settings>Control Center.)
n For Android phones, open your Camera app and hold the phone so the QR code appears in the viewfinder. You should receive a notification on the screen. Tap the notification to open the link associated with the QR code.
• If the notification does not appear on the screen, go to Settings to enable QR code scanning. If you have a Samsung phone, go to Settings to enable the QR code scanning and then open the Samsung Camera app and follow the same steps as above.
How to protect your information
n Remember that anyone can create a QR code, so be smart about what or whom you trust. To read a current menu or program? Probably safe. To get more information about a product on TV? Hmmm… To pay for an item? Probably not safe. Are you being asked for information? Whose is asking & why?
n There is no need to download a QR Code Scanning App for either an Android or iPhone. Your phone can do scanning with its built-in features. Cappie strongly suggests that you do not download third-party scanning apps. Downloading third-party apps is always risky so be
careful. (A third-party app means it is not from you (1st party) and it is not from your device (iPhone or Android is 2nd party); it was developed by a party other than your iPhone or Android (3rd party) and can be filled with malware or a virus that can harm your device.
n Be careful what you scan. The FBI released a Public Service Announcement last year on how criminals are tampering with both digital and physical QR codes.
• Legitimate codes can be replaced with malicious ones, prompting a victim to enter login and financial information. Cyber criminals can steal information especially if you give additional information after entering a website.
• In cases where payment can be made with QR codes, a criminal can tamper with the code to redirect payments elsewhere. For example, last year fraudulent QR codes were found placed on parking meters in some Texas cities. When the driver scanned the fake code to pay for parking, they were taken to a fake website designed to scam them out of their money.
n Check the URL to make sure the site is authentic. Malicious domain names may look like real URLs but often contain typos, misplaced letters, or something like a .net instead of an .org or .com address.
n Be extremely cautious about

entering a login, password, personal, or financial information if you navigated to the site from a QR code link and don’t download an app from a QR code. Use your phone’s app store (2nd party) to get the app.
n If you receive a text or email stating a payment failed from a company from which you recently purchased and the company states you can only complete the payment through a QR code, call the company to verify. Locate the company’s phone number through a trusted site, not from the phone number provided in a text or email.
n If you receive a QR code from someone you know, verify that the code is actually from them.
