World Handicap System & Course Ratings
In 2020 the governing bodies of golf implemented the World Handicap System which consolidated the six existing handicap systems into one. The old system calculated your handicap index based on your 10 best scores from your most recent 20 rounds. The WHS system calculates your index based on your 8 best scores from your most recent 20 rounds and eliminates the 96% multiplier. By adopting the WHS golfers are now able to utilize a global handicap system with course ratings around the world.
Along with the calculation changes & global implementation there were a few other rules of handicapping introduced at that time. Please keep these key items in mind when posting your scores to the WHS system.
☛ Net double bogey is the maximum score you can post on a hole. (Par + 2 + any handicap strokes you receive)
☛ Your handicap index will update the day after you post a score.
☛ The WHS accounts for abnormal playing conditions, limits extreme upward movement of a handicap index, & reduces a handicap index when an exception score is posted.
☛ Maximum handicap index is 54.

DIRECTOR
8 Grand Lifestyles | August 2023 | livegrandaz.com
☛ Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating – Par)
☛ Playing Handicap = Course Handicap x handicap allowance
With the changes to the handicap system the governing bodies also implemented a global Course Rating system to allow for uniformity around the world. With that we wanted to touch on what goes into a golf courses rating & stroke index allocation.
☛ The local Allied Golf Association, in our case the Arizona Golf Association, determines the Course Rating of a course by effective playing length and obstacle data gathering. This provides a simple, objective method without having to collect scorecards from a wide range of players, which can be challenging and produce inconsistent results.
☛ The Course Ratings data is used to generate raw rankings of the difficulty of each hole relative to par. To help spread out the strokes over 18 holes the more difficult 9-holes (front or back) is assigned the odd numbers and the easier 9-holes (front or back) is assigned the even numbers.
☛ After the raw rankings the handicap committee will make minor adjustments to the stroke index allocation for more equitable play in match play as well as stroke play formats. It is a best practice to avoid consecutive low strokes and low strokes at the beginning or end of each nine.
For more information on the WHS and Course Rating systems please visit usga.org/whs.

FROM THE FINANCE DEPARTMENT 11 Grand Lifestyles | August 2023 | livegrandaz.com
Allison Adams Fitness Director
This month’s article was borrowed from the website bluezones.com. The Grand is often seeking volunteers for opportunities to be of service right in your own community.
Contact Denise Alessi, Volunteer Program Manager, about these opportunities at denise.alessi@ livegrandaz.com.
Why Volunteering is One of the Most Powerful Things You Can Do for Your Health
By Naomi Imatome-Yun, Blue Zones Editor-in-Chief, and Elisabeth Almekinder, Registered Nurse and Health Journalist
One of the first pieces of advice that Dan Buettner, the founder of Blue Zones, always gives as a way to improve your life, health, and happiness is to sign up to volunteer in your community. It’s a longterm investment in your health and in your city if you sign up to do it regularly, and you’ll meet like-minded people along the way. In Blue Zones Project communities, we use this principle to improve individual and community well-being by highlighting local volunteer opportunities and creating opportunities for groups to volunteer together (coworkers, congregation members, students, neighbors). It turns out that helping others benefits our health, just as it benefits those we serve through volunteering. Meeting like-minded people, and creating a new circle of social networks improves our lives and the community as a whole.
Though Erick Zoot Payne, a resident of Charlotte, NC, had made new friends through volunteering at breast cancer awareness events and participating in “ALL IN,” an annual poker tournament to benefit cancer research and care in the Charlotte area, he had never given back to his Alma Mater, St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, NC.
His college experience was uniquely exciting, but he left school with an attitude of, “don’t look back.” When Payne saw the extensive damage caused to the campus by Hurricane Florence in September 2019, a feeling of loss, devastation, and nostalgia came over him. Deeply affected by the photographs he saw online, over the few months following the hurricane, Payne visited St. Andrews twice, wondering what he could do to help. “Another alumnus reached out to a group of us. Music festival swirled around in the conversation, and I knew how I was going to give back to my school. Volunteering to help gave me all this energy I had stored up for a purpose,” said Payne. “I was determined to make this thing happen to show my support for the school, my friends and classmates and all those 18, 19, & 20 somethings who were eating their meals out of food trucks in the gymnasium.”
Through the SAUL Fest experience and working with the other alumni volunteers, Payne saw a love, commitment, and enthusiasm that was contagious. It showed that one person who is passionate about something can make a difference and restore a person’s faith in humanity, but a team of people can regain confidence in the community. That’s a real soul-satisfying experience. Payne now feels a kinship with his new group of volunteer alumni friends that he says affected his soul in an incredibly positive way. “I was an honor to be a part of SAUL FEST! I was excited, focused, determined, thankful, and appreciative of how hard everyone worked to get it done,” Payne continued. “After it was over, I was exhausted with the biggest smile on my face. It is therapeutic to say how I felt about the whole experience. It came and went, and I had not given much thought to what we did. We raised over $8,000 for hurricane relief for a struggling campus.
Volunteering: Improves Health, Lowers Stress, Boosts Self-Confidence
Volunteering helps because you can see right away the effects of your contribution and commitment. Research has documented the positive feelings that surface during a “helper’s high.” Individuals develop increased trust and social interactions. Participating as a volunteer with others in a group cause boosts self-confidence and decreases the risk of depression, especially in the elderly population. Lowered levels of stress hormones have been documented in those who volunteer, versus those who don’t. Social benefits include a new network of friends with shared interests and a sense of purpose. At the same time, volunteers learn new skills.
Volunteering has shown to improve mental and physical health in one study of adults over 60. In another study, volunteers reported better physical health and life satisfaction. They perceived

volunteering as a catalyst to positive changes in their health.
A longitudinal study of aging found those who volunteer their time to have longer life spans. Participants also experienced a decrease in pain from chronic illness.
If you volunteer, you often get more out of it than you give. It can be an enjoyable experience, such as the music festival Payne helped to organize. Besides combating loneliness and bringing joy to your life, volunteering regularly also improves physical well-
being. A study published in the journal Psychology and Aging showed volunteers had lower hypertension risk and higher levels of psychological well-being than non-volunteers.
Another study published in BMC Public Health concluded that volunteering should be promoted at the public health level through education and policies to improve the health of community members and the community at large. It should primarily be supported in the elderly population, minority groups, those with a lower educational level, single folks, or those who are unemployed.
It you want to do something right now, Gretchen Rubin’s advice to us for the “laziest, most excellent good deed” to give you a happiness boost and potentially save a life is to sign up to be an organ donor on your license or in the national or state registry.

Learning The Grand Community
Article submitted by: Dennis Hanscom
C.H.A.P.S. member
Shortly after my move to The Grand almost ten years ago, I ventured out for short drives around Grand to learn a bit more about my new community. On my short drives I made this discovery about the naming of some of the roads.
I learned that Clearview became Mountain View; Limestone became Estrella Vista which became Monteverde; Saddle Ridge became Sandia Park; to the west of Sunrise the road was named Goldwater Canyon and to the east of Sunrise the road was named Goldwater Ridge; and Calistoga Dr. became Desert Light Dr. which became Parra Dr. which became Alameda Dr. Whew!
Initially I was content with knowing the locations of Cimarron and Adobe. And, of course, all the restaurant locations on the Autobahn also known as Bell Road!
I also learned the posted speed limits on both Goldwater’s, Sunrise, Mountain View, Clearview, and Palm View is 35 mph while all other residential streets are 25 mph. I also learned the Grand is under the watchful eye of the Surprise Police Department for violators. So, be aware!
One evening about a month after my move, I had a man at my door telling me I had left my garage door open. He identified himself as being from C.H.A.P.S. and gave me a brief synopsis of what C.H.A.P.S. was about and invited me to come to one of their meetings.
It was during my attendance at that meeting that I decided joining C.H.A.P.S.
would be a terrific way to learn about my new community and make a few new acquaintances. After all, they were only asking that I serve two 2-hour shifts per month. (And I could choose which days I was available to serve.)
C.H.A.P.S. holds its monthly meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at the Sonoran Plaza. Our next meeting will be August 22.
C.H.A.P.S. is a volunteer organization made up of approximately 140 residents. C.H.A.P.S. two main functions are Evening Patrol and Vacation Watch. Very briefly we check for open garage doors and streetlights that are out when out on Evening Patrol, and we monitor vacated homes whereas we do walk arounds to check for unlocked doors, and unlocked windows. We conduct Vacation Watch duties in the morning hours. We always go out in teams of two and drive the vehicles
provided by CAM. Those two processes are explained more in depth in previous and future publications of the Grand Lifestyles.
Just a quick side note, if you will be away from your home for an extended period, please be sure your keyholder is checking your mail.
Do you know how many times W. Encantada Dr. changes names? Join C.H.A.P.S. and you will know in no time. WE NEED YOU! Like any volunteer organization we are always looking for new people to step in and help us keep this much needed service running smoothly. Being a member is an excellent way to learn about this community. And a great way to meet new people and develop friendships along the way. Call the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us! We will put you on our list and someone will contact you to provide info as to when training sessions will be provided.

Changing of The Grand Guard
By Delarita Ford Communications Coordinator
The Grand experienced a changing of the guard as a new general manager with a familiar face assumed responsibilities for the burgeoning 45 and up active-adult community.
General Manager Rod Rankin relinquished his full-time duties to “rediscover” his retirement while entrusting the lead administrative role to the assistant manager, Jeff Hochman, on Friday, July 7.
“I leave knowing you are in good hands. Jeff Hochman is a good and genuine human. He cares about you and this association. Trust him, allow him to lead, work together. I have great expectations for Jeff and all of you. I know I will not be disappointed,” stated Rankin in his farewell. Hochman, like Rankin, is familiar with the retirement community. While Rankin recalled the Board of Directors asking him to “watch over the association” during a search for a new general manager about 20 months ago, Hochman recounted when he started with the community nearly 20 years ago.
“It was going to be a temporary job for [a] maximum [of] three months. I figured I could save up my pennies and buy a new golf car. A winwin for everyone,” said Rankin, a resident of The Grand, who resigned from his volunteer role on the Board before coming out of retirement and accepting the management job for over a year. Although Rankin wanted to resume his retirement after The Falls Restaurant opened at the beginning of the year, the fire extinguished his plan. He remains on staff temporarily in a part-time position as the single point-of-contact for The Falls Restaurant fire restoration and to maintain community continuity.
“The Board has asked me to get the restaurant built back and ready … I thank them for that because it will allow me to ease back into retirement,” added Rankin. Meanwhile, Hochman is no stranger to The Grand’s history/culture and residents as his first-hand knowledge about operations began almost 20 years ago working for the community in Surprise. He started working for a Sun City/Del Webb property at 19.

“I love working with people and forming friendships with the residents. A community like The Grand fosters just that,” Hochman said. “The Grand is one of the greatest active adult communities in the country and that is where I have always wanted to be. All my training and education has prepared me for this role. I wouldn’t even want to think of doing it anywhere else.”
Hochman was named assistant general manager in 2022. Hired as The Grand’s golf director in 2004, he oversaw four courses, the snack bars, and The Grand Café. Previously, he worked with 36 holes at Sun City Palm Desert, a gated community in Riverside County, California.
“Operating golf courses, your product is out there for everyone to see [and] I tackle all my tasks with that thought process in mind. Everyone is going to see what you are doing, so be professional and put out the best product you can,” said Hochman, who attracted major golf projects to the community and grew the golf program, which makes up nearly one-third of Grand’s annual revenues/expenses.
The golf guru is among a handful of people nationwide who are both Class A members of the Professional Golfers’ Association of America and the Golf Course Superintendent Association of America. During his two-decade tenure, he has received certifications in HOA management, including his Manager of Community Associations and an Association Management Specialist.
He has seen “many great changes” to the community, including the recent rebranding, upgrading some buildings/amenities, implementing water savings and turf removal programs, new activities/events, updates to technology, the dog park, state-of-the-art lawn bowling facility, and more.
A resident of Peoria, Hochman and his wife, Mindy, have a daughter, Baylee, and a son, Ryder. When he is not working or spending time with family, he enjoys being on the golf course or riding his motorcycle.
“ I have had the opportunity to work under many general managers. Throughout my career, I have always learned from what they did right or what they did wrong. I have taken the best qualities from each of them and incorporated into my own management style.
”

Two nights a week, once a month, our local GRAND Music Club bands will play during the evenings for your pleasure in the Cimarron Club!
Many of the most talented performers in the GRAND will be featured! Bring your own dry snacks and enjoy a fun, casual evening as you listen to new and old songs by new and old performers with favorites you can sing along with.
On Friday, September 15, and Saturday, September 16, 2023, the first of this series begins with two of our homegrown bands: The Salty Dawgs and The CBD Project . This is a double billing with two for the price of ONE! A splendid time is guaranteed for all.
While The Salty Dawgs continue to rely on music from the folk era, they have been expanding their repertoire to include a variety of western, country, and humorous songs. The addition of an accomplished fiddle player and keyboard musician has allowed them to include instrumentals and other well-known standards. They still love to encourage audience participation in a sing-along format.
The CBD Project takes its name from the three founding members Craig, Bob, and Dave. Not exactly what you might have been thinking, although they are both therapeutic. Some of the styles/artists they feature include Lyle Lovett, Jerry Jeff Walker, the Allman brothers, Tom Petty, and a couple of original songs! Featuring all kinds of musical instrumentselectric, steel, wood and whatever a banjo is made of.

By Lucille Fletcher
The Grand Drama & Comedy Club opens its new 2023-2024 season with a thriller written by Lucille Fletcher entitled Night Watch. This production will keep you on the edge of your seat, as the Drama & Comedy Club presents its patrons with an American mystery melodrama.
Synopsis: Unable to sleep, Elaine Wheeler paces the living room of her Manhattan townhouse, troubled by unsettling memories and vague fears. Her husband tries to comfort her, but when he steps away for a moment, Elaine screams as she sees (or believes she sees) the body of a dead man in the window across the way. The police are called but find nothing except an empty chair. Elaine’s terror grows as shortly thereafter she sees still another body—this time a woman’s—but by now the police are skeptical and pay no heed to her frantic pleas. Her husband, claiming that Elaine may be on the verge of a breakdown, calls a psychiatrist, who agrees with his suggestion that Elaine should commit herself to a sanitarium for treatment. From this point on, the plot moves quickly and grippingly as those involved—Elaine’s old friend and house guest, Blanche; the inquisitive and rather

This is the last of 3 Lifestyles articles covering the 2023/2024
Board Goals.
Goal 3:
2023-24 Board Of Directors
2023/2024 BOARD GOALS
goals
The Board reviewed the state of our community and established the following 5 goals. We will focus our attention and resources to support our community today and in the future. We will provide updates to these goals throughout the year.
Goal 1: Develop Grand’s Technology Information Roadmap
Goal 2: Complete the Pre-Design and Design Phases for Desert Spring Complex [DSC]
Goal 3:
Decide which Space Planning Recommendations to Implement
Goal 4: Assess Food and Beverage Services – Compass Hospitality to Meet/Exceed Key Performance Indicators [KPIs] & Reopening of The Falls
Goal 5:
Decide Project Management Services - Continue Consulting Services or Bring it In-House
DECIDE WHICH SPACE PLANNING RECOMMENDATIONS TO IMPLEMENT
Our community is 27 years old and we are facing new challenges with aging assets, demand for more space, and the changing needs of clubs and residents. These challenges need to be balanced with our strategic and financial goals. We have a long list of proposed CARE projects such as renovating the golf courses, the lakeside pavilion, Cimarron, Desert Springs and Palm Center complexes, expanding space for visual and performing art clubs, just to name a few. This list has been our guidepost since the inception of LRP, but it has had limitations due to lack of no clear path being established on priorities. With the vocal encouragement of many residents and club members, we embarked back in 2018 to study how to better utilize our campus facilities – as our desires have changed since 1996, and we may have out-lived and over-utilized today’s configurations. In many places we find ourselves bursting at the seams, and our
staff is constantly reconfiguring our spaces trying to meet our varied needs. Residents are asking for more availability to the spaces they use and enjoy. When staff spend hours reconfiguring spaces each day, it decreases the available time when clubs/residents can use the space.
Those earlier studies and surveys culminated in 2022’s research and hiring of experts in the field to analyze how to accomplish our objectives: 1) ‘highest and best use’ of our current facilities, 2) realize operational efficiencies and 3) ensure financial, operational feasibility and best use of our CARE funds.
The proposed Space Planning recommendations serve as a roadmap on how to tackle the many proposed CARE projects. Recommendations were presented in April at a Town Hall meeting. In a post-town hall survey, over 70% of the respondents agreed or strongly
agreed with the direction proposed. It shows where we are/aren’t fully utilizing the current space, and ideas on how to improve utilization. It also prioritizes the order of projects, based on moving some groups to different and/or remodeled facilities to maximize efficiency and minimize cost. This can help us preserve and appropriately use our CARE funds.
The Long-Range Planning Advisory Committee [LRP] presented the results of the entire community survey at the June Board Workshop. This fall, LRP will conduct additional community surveys, focus groups, polls etc. to validate their final recommendations to the Board by year’s end.
You can stay informed by attending the monthly LRP meetings held on the first Thursday at 1 PM and attending Board Workshops.

Goal 4:
ASSESS FOOD AND BEVERAGE SERVICES — COMPASS HOSPITALITY TO MEET/EXCEED KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS [KPIS] & REOPENING OF THE FALLS
Last February, Grand and Compass Hospitality negotiated a contract for food and beverage services. This agreement replaced Unidine with Compass Hospitality and a critical component of the agreement is monitoring KPIs. The mutually agreed upon KPIs are based on industry standards for customer satisfaction, food and labor costs, and other parameters. The KPIs measure how Compass is performing at the Grand Café, Golf Snack Shacks, Catering and The Falls restaurant.
The Food and Beverage Advisory Committee, Staff and Compass review the KPIs on a regular basis. This includes reviewing monthly results and trends, identifying risks and implementing
Goal 5:
SUMMARY
strategies to mitigate risk. Please know that the Board is keeping a critical eye on the results as well.
Regarding
the recovery and rebuild of The Falls
Progress continues at a steady rate. Please note that I’m writing this article in midJuly, so I’m anticipating that the weekly updates will soon include construction and schedule updates. Rod Rankin remains Grand’s single-point-of-contact for the recovery, rebuild and liaison with our insurance company and attorneys. He reports directly to the Board. We remain resolute to post weekly updates on News of The Day, the official Grand Facebook page and the Grand website homepage.
DECIDE PROJECT MANAGEMENT SERVICES — CONTINUE CONSULTING SERVICES OR BRING IN-HOUSE
Last spring, we hired Rider, Levett Bucknall [RLB] a Project Management Firm, to provide project management services. This was an area where we did not have in-house expertise and needed help. The RLB project manager [PM] focused on the construction and opening of The Falls restaurant. Once on board, the PM was instrumental in keeping the project on time and on budget. Currently, the PM is the committee chair for Large Project Team [LPT] for the Desert Springs Complex. The LPT is in the ‘discovery phase’ or Pre-Design. The PM will
ensure the team listens, documents and prioritizes the needs, wants and desires of the community while balancing those with Grand’s strategic and financial goals.
The value that a PM brings to a project is without question. It is best when the PM is engaged in the early pre-design and design phases, long before construction begins. Based on our current and future needs, the Board and the General Manager will decide whether to bring PM expertise in-house or continue to use outside consultants.
There is much work to do to accomplish these goals. We need support from our volunteer Advisory Committees, staff and residents. We will provide progress updates on the goals when milestones are reached.
Please stay engaged! Attend committee and Board meetings, respond to inquiries from committees, and participate when being asked for your feedback. Let’s work together to achieve these goals.

My goal is to ensure that every resident feels a profound sense of belonging, satisfaction, and fulfillment during their time spent here.
Water, as a precious resource, holds great significance in our lives and the sustainability of our community. I am acutely aware of the importance of preserving this invaluable asset, and I will continue implementing water conservation initiatives throughout our community. Through efficient irrigation practices, identifying and fixing leaks promptly, and promoting watersaving measures among our residents, we can make a significant impact in safeguarding this vital resource for our present and future generations.
I firmly believe that continuing effective communication is the cornerstone of a thriving community. Therefore, I am open to fostering open lines of communication. Your feedback, ideas, and
concerns are invaluable to the team, and I am great at actively listening and addressing your items to the best of my ability.
I will also support and leverage the Technology Information Roadmap that is being developed. To stay current, we need to continue to evolve where necessary and embrace new technologies that enhance The Grand.
As your General Manager, I recognize that the well-being and happiness of our residents are of paramount importance. I will strive to continuously improve our amenities, facilities, and services to meet our evolving needs and desires. Together as a team, we can explore new initiatives. This will provide opportunities for personal growth, social connection, and lifelong learning through engaging events.
In conclusion, I am genuinely excited about the journey that lies ahead as your General Manager. With dedication, commitment, and a deep sense of responsibility, I am ready to lead our community towards a future filled with joy, fulfillment, and meaningful experiences. I am here to serve you, and together, we will continue to make our active adult community a place we can all be proud to call home.
I am humbled at the incredible opportunity you have afforded me, and I look forward to working to create an extraordinary living experience.

CURRENT EVENTS ROUNDTABLE
PHIL AXELROD
Meets 12 times on Tue 6/6/23 - 8/29/23
8:30 AM -10:30 AM FEE: $20*
Let's meet weekly to discuss the current events of the day. Be prepared to actively participate as we debate the pros and cons of the topics selected by the group. Each participant is encouraged to bring an item or topic currently in the public's eye. We are not limited to political items for discussion. At the beginning of each session, I will poll the group for topics. Once we have a complete list we will vote on all topics and the one garnering the most votes will be the first topic discussed at each meeting. Lively discussions will ensue, followed by resolutions. If you enjoy brisk and vigorous debate, this is the group for you. *Fee reduced for remaining classes
GRANT AND LEE
KEN SORENSEN
Meets 1 time on Thur 8/3/23
10:30 AM - 12:00 PM FEE: $15
Opposing forces, powerful men. Ulysses S. Grant came from common stock. Robert E. Lee was the star wherever he was at. Grant came through West Point with few possibilities for a future. Lee was very successful and it was known that he would become a great military force. They met briefly during the Mexican War. Lee didn’t remember and to Grant, it was a highlight of his life. They faced each other on several battlefields in the Civil War and met in April of 1865 across a kitchen table to bring about an end to that uncivil war. One became a college president and one became president. Come and hear their stories.
GINGERTALKS—ORIGINS AND BELIEFS OF HIPPIES AND THE 1960S COUNTER-CULTURAL MOVEMENT
GINGER SWARTZ
Meets 1 time on Wed 8/9/23
10:00 AM - 11:30 AM FEE: $15
The 1960s counter-cultural movement was an alternative lifestyle chosen by what were then known as hippies, freaks, or longhairs.
Members of this counterculture worked to establish their own towns, economies, politics, and values. The women’s movement and the gay rights movement were among the ideas that emerged during this time. The public memory of this period is not a positive one. This program will look at the actual history of the era and provide a retrospective view of the reality of these iconic times.
ELVIS
VINNIE BRUNO
Meets 1 time on Mon 8/14/23
9:00 AM - 11:00 AM FEE: $15
Elvis Presley is regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century and is often referred to as the "King of Rock n' Roll". We will travel with Elvis from his early days in Memphis and his trailblazing recordings with Sun Records, with his complete dominance of the music charts in the 50s. His 50s success led him to a successful 60s Hollywood film career and on to his acclaimed television comeback, which opened the door to triumphant tours and a seven-year sold out concert residency at the International Hotel in Las Vegas. Elvis has been inducted into multiple music halls of fame and still remains the best-selling solo artist of all time.
SIMON AND GARFUNKEL
VINNIE BRUNO
Meets 1 time on Wed 8/16/23
9:00 AM - 11:00 AM FEE: $15
We will travel with the most successful folk/rock duo as they craft hit singles and albums while establishing themselves as counterculture icons of the 60s. Our journey will start with their early recordings in high school to their folk/rock anthem "Sound of Silence" through their love/hate relationship dealing with personal and artistic issues to their classic "Bridge Over Troubled Waters". We will also briefly explore highlights from their solo careers.

DRAMA & COMEDY CLUB THE GRAND’S “COMMUNITY THEATER”
The Grand Drama & Comedy Club is the Grand’s Community Theater. We live our motto, “On Stage, Back Stage, A Place for Everyone” and welcome everyone to our club recognizing that each person has unique talents and value.
Everyone is not an actor, and many members use their talents in costuming, make-up, marketing, and communication. Do you like to redecorate? You might be a wonderful set designer. Are you a DIY kind of guy? Or gal? Join the construction crew building sets, or join a “painting party” to
turn flats into garden scenes. Smile! Be an usher! We offer training for our sound crew and our lighting team. Learn a new skill or use your experience in a new way. Please contact Ove Jakobsen at 256-721-0431 or ovejakobsen@msn. com for sound or Bob Nix at 623-214-8280 or bobnix@cox.net for lighting info. They are happy to train interested folks.
We offer dance classes at many levels, sure to fit one of your styles, from beginner to advance tap and jazz. Our Grandettes have been a Grand tradition for 25 years! Please contact Robin Kachurak, Dance Committee Chairperson, at 818-795-4859.
Not interested in learning a lot of lines but always had a desire to be on stage? Our Cabaret Players presents 3 comedy performances a year by actors who use their scripts as part of their performance – no memorization needed. Always a sell out, this venue is small and intimate in the Cimarron Theater.
We offer so many opportunities for making new friends and fun, and all for only $10. For information on all the many ways to participate in the activities, “on stage or back stage”, please visit our webpage: https://www. granddrama.com

SOCIAL GAMES
Social Games Charter Club is comprised of 5 Special Interest Groups. These interest groups are as follows:
CHESS:
Tucked away in The Grand, three times a week, we play Chess and forget about everything else. It’s true, while playing Chess with us, you think only of Chess, an inexpensive (no membership fees) and calorie-burning activity (yes, it’s true, you burn lots of calories playing Chess).
You’ll need to know the basics as we won’t be spending too much time teaching, but we are welcoming and friendly to everyone, even if you aren’t Bobby Fischer!
So, check us out, Mate. Just show up, with or without a board and pieces, and be ready for a rewarding escape. We usually meet in the Agua Fria room (Cimarron) at 11:30 -3:30 Monday and Wednesday and the Sago Room at the Palm Center on Friday. This is subject to change, so call us first at 623-293-2884 for Paula, or 203-979-1194 for Marty.
CRIBBAGE:
We play in the Pima Room at Chaparral Center on Tuesdays from 9:00- 11:30 a.m. We start promptly, so please come at least 15 minutes early to sign up and get acquainted. We collect $4 to play, which is awarded back to the winners. You are invited to play three times as our guest. Our dues are $5 per year.
HAND & FOOT
We play every Tuesday at 1:00 in the Pima Room at Chaparral Center and Friday at 6:00 in the Agua Fria Room at Cimarron. We play two games and draw cards for random partners each game. You will need $4. in quarters and $4 in bills for the
two games. If you have your own cards (6 decks) and shuffler, please bring them. We are currently playing “Progressive Hand & Foot”. For a copy of the rules or questions, please contact Joy Kreick at joykreick@gmail.com. Come and play! We’re a friendly group and try our best to be inclusive no matter your skill level.
RUMMIKUB
Welcome to Rummikub, a top, worldwide board game since 1945, played with tiles but similar to gin rummy and canasta, for 2-4 people. We meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays and 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month for exciting games. We play in the Pima Room, located near The Café at Chaparral Center. From 11AM to 2PM, we engage in the exciting world of Rummikub, practicing skills and strategic thinking. If you don’t know the new joker rules and the basics, call for a FREE lesson. Come join us to meet fellow Rummikub fans to have fun. For info: Barbara Powers: 480-567-2533 or barbs.rum@ gmail.com.
STAMP COLLECTING
We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm in the Pima Room in the Chaparral Center. Meetings are always open to anyone interested in collecting postage stamps, whether to learn about stamp collecting, discover the worth of an existing collection or to donate a collection to a non-profit tax exempt foundation. Our friendly group will encourage your interest in stamps, whatever it may be. More info is available from Gene Trinks at 602339-8243 or gctrinks@cox.net.
SOFTBALL
Who wouldn't want to be a kid again? Lasting friendships are formed through a game for kids! We play all year long on the beautiful Del Webb Ballpark on Mountainview just west of Goldwater. Stop by any day and meet some great guys and gals; all of whom are there to have fun and relive their youth. There are four different seasons each year as well as different skill levels for annual and parttime residents. We have special events throughout the year. MOMS LIKE ME SUPPORT GROUP
Moms Like Me is a support group whose goal is to reach out to the hurt and hearts of mothers who have experienced the loss of a child. Every day there are thousands of mothers who have lost a child who are living in the depths of despair, feeling they have lost all hope. Our support group falls under the banner of Umbrella Ministries, a network of mothers throughout the United States who have lost a child, and whose soul mission is to reach out with the Lord’s love, to broken hearted mothers. The ways of losing child can be quite broad, from infants to adult children, miscarriages, to a still born death of a full-term pregnancy. Other mothers have lost a child through suicide, a fatal accident or illness.
The death of a child is different than any other loss and only a mother who has experienced that loss can relate to the grief that a mother is feeling.
We plan to meet twice a month in The Grand, location to be determined later.

On August 19 we will meet and hear from Mr. Jeff Zink and from the well-known and popular General Michael “Mick” McGuire. Both will offer
perspective on the “Jan 6” event at the Capitol –“The People’s House.”
Jeff’s son Ryan has been wrongfully charged with trespassing on federal grounds on January 6, 2021. Ryan is innocent, yet is facing 22 years to life, if convicted.
Jeff was also in Washington DC on January 6th, 2021 and saw first-hand what happened that day. While neither went into the Capitol, Ryan was charged with trespassing on federal grounds and buildings, entering the capitol, and crossing a barrier, none of which are true.
General McGuire is a retired Air Force Major General who has lived in Arizona most of his life. On January 8, 2021, he was ordered to send Arizona National Guard troops to Washington, D.C. in response to the 2021 United States Capitol attack. McGuire was the only adjutant general of the 54 state and territory adjutant generals to refuse the order due to concerns about the legality of the mission. He retired three months later.

More remote and less visited by tourists, Desert View is anchored by the iconic watchtower, built in 1932 and designed by architect Mary Colter. Sitting out on a promontory, the Desert View area is at the highest point on the South Rim, offering views of the Colorado River, Navajo lands and of course, the heart-stopping sights of the Grand Canyon.

THE ROCK ART RANCH
September 22nd | Friday | $110
Arizona’s most hidden treasure, the Rock Art Ranch, near Winslow, is a privately-owned 5,000 acre cattle ranch that was once part of the Hashknife Gang Spread. More than a home to cattle and bison, archaeological records show that people have been passing through this area for over 13,000 years— hunting and gathering groups, semi nomadic and later sedentary farmers, and it is considered a sacred site by Native Americans. Chevelon Canyon, a narrow, deep and watered gorge, cuts through the ranch, and thousands of petroglyphs dated from 5000 BC to 1400 AD, etch the steep canyon walls.

COUNCIL ADOPTS FY2024 FINAL BUDGET
At the Council Meeting on Tuesday, June 6, City Council approved the Fiscal Year 2024 budget. The budget reflects Council’s commitment to maintaining the quality of the public services and infrastructure residents value most. In order to address our city’s increased needs due to growth, a focus was placed providing operational and capital funding for infrastructure and increasing programs and amenities that maintain residents’ quality of life.
COUNCIL VOTES ON NEW DISTRICT BOUNDARY MAP
City Council selected a new District Map at the June 6 Council Meeting following a redistricting process that involved the public, a volunteer citizen Redistricting Advisory Committee and an expert redistricting consultant. Redistricting is required by federal law every 10 years following the U.S. Census. The newly adopted district boundaries are in effect now, and for the 2024 primary and general elections.
According to the 2020 Census, Surprise’s population was 143,148, an increase of 21.8% from the 2010 Census, when 117,517 residents were counted. Redistricting redraws district boundaries so each district has nearly the same number of people in it, ensuring all voices are represented equally and fairly. On Wednesday, June 7, Mayor Hall, Councilmember Remley and I donated a total of $4,050 in discretionary funds to The Salvation Army North West Valley. Thank you to Mark and Kathy Merritt for all their hard work and dedication to the center.

Portillos, one of the top-wanted restaurants, is expected to open in 2024 at Prasada North. To view the full results, go to surpriseaz.gov/ retailsurvey.

From Jim Croce to Dan Fogelberg, and Carole King to James Taylor, ROCK ME GENTLY (formerly known as "Time In A Bottle") presents an unforgettable two hours of some of the greatest American music to come from the 1970s. From the end of the 1960s, it became common to divide mainstream rock music into soft and hard rock with both emerging as major genres of popular music. In the early ’70s, rock music mellowed creating the distinctive, laid-back sound of soft rock. The smooth and easy feeling this music inspires is perfect for life’s most meaningful moments.
