FROM GOLF OPERATIONS

The new red and orange tees at Granite Falls South was such a great success that the process was just completed at Cimarron and Desert Springs. These new tees allow more players to have more options for all golfers to move forward or backwards to give each golfer the best challenge for their own game. The following article was printed in the February 2022 Grand Lifestyles by the Move Forward Team

Jeff Hochman Assistant General Manager

Change is Good The new forward tees on the Granite Falls South Course are important changes for all SCG golfers. Maybe for the first time, players can choose to play a course layout ideally suited to their physical abilities. With these new course layouts, what will change will be your enjoyment of the game of golf. However, we don’t want to promise too much. What about that nasty slice which occasionally put your ball in the desert or those bunker shots that didn’t land on the green? They probably won’t change just because you play from the new tees. The new modifications cannot replace lessons and practice. But we can give you a much better chance for success. Our courses are designed to challenge your golfing skills. We offer fine fairways located in a desert setting, some with sloping areas and many bunkers and lakes, surrounded by a well maintained 10

rough. Not one of these features has been altered by the course’s new tee modifications. So what is the change? You will now have more tee options with 11 layouts of different distances. The tee modifications are designed to allow you to play those same beautiful and challenging courses but from course layouts that are better suited to your evolving physical ability. This close match is important. For example, when you were six or seven years old you wanted to ride a bike. Your folks didn’t buy a racing bike for you because they knew you couldn’t reach the pedals. They gave you a bike with smaller wheels, just right for you. You rode and learned to balance, and you felt like one of the big kids. This smaller bike fit your physical abilities at that time. Now you can understand golf’s ongoing dilemma, which has endured for over a century. “Grow the Game” has become a mantra for the golf industry. To stay relevant, attracting new golfers is right up there with retaining existing players. But golf courses have lacked enough course layouts to accommodate golfers’ widely diverse physical capabilities and evolving golf skills. So the USGA* and ASGCA** along with a few local golf professionals spent time thinking about how to make golf

Grand Lifestyles | August 2022 | suncitygrand.com

FROM GOLF OPERATIONS appropriate for varying physical abilities. A simple solution emerged. Make golf more inclusive. Create more choices where it starts—at the tee boxes. Add new tee distance options and even a combination of layouts, what we call “combo tees.” Check out the new scorecards for Granite Falls South to see the expanded course layouts. SCG is embarking on an exciting journey as we move to modify all four golf courses to meet new industry standards. Even nongolfers stand to benefit from the changes as our community evolves to match the times and maintain home values.

Which Tee is Right for You? Each player has to determine the tee distance that suits their game and ability. The accepted method is to start by identifying an average driving distance for each regular and combo course layout. Pros like Jack Nicklaus and Chris Miles, who are also golf architects, found this relationship can be established by dividing the layout’s total length by a common factor for each layout. Nicklaus proposed a factor of 30 with Miles proposing 28. The resulting calculation identified an optimal driving distance in

yards for any course layout. In order to apply such a factor for our new South Course, we decided to average those two factors resulting in a factor of 29. We named it the “Hochman Factor” in recognition of all the work that our Director of Golf, Jeff Hochman, has done to make our courses more playable. Simply dividing the number 29 into each of the total yardages for our 11 tee layouts defines the optimal driving distance for each layout. (See Table 1) By applying the Hochman Factor, you can match your average driving distance with the optimal driving distances to determine which course layout/tee color/ distance will provide the best golfing experience for you. Golf is a sport designed to challenge

your ability to perform specific golfing skills. The newly-modified South Course will offer an appropriate and realistic challenge for your skills at this unique moment in your life. Your future game scores will probably fall within a range of between birdie to double bogey with the most frequent hole scores at par and bogey. And, you will enjoy the occasional achievement of excellence by meeting and surmounting the difficult challenges the course demands. Successfully meeting these challenges is the true purpose of golf—and it just makes the game more fun. * USGA – United States Golf Association ** ASGCA – American Society of Golf Course Architects Contributed by the Move Forward Team

Best exercise time

Exercise is good for you whenever you do it, but the time of day to achieve the best result may be different for women and men, according to a US study. on” which may mean the ideal time of day to exercise is different for women and men.

Allison Adams Fitness Manager By Philippa Roxby Health reporter

Early morning exercise could benefit women who want to reduce body fat and blood pressure. It found women burned more body fat during morning exercise, whereas evenings counted more for men. Differences in hormones, in biological clocks and sleep-wake cycles between the sexes, could all play a role. “The best time for exercise is the best time you can do it and fit it into your schedule,” says Dr Paul Arciero, lead study author and professor of health and human physiological sciences at Skidmore College, New York state. But he suggests there is “something else going

EARLY OR LATE? Based on the results, women interested in reducing fat around their middle and reducing their blood pressure should aim to exercise in the morning, Dr Arciero says. This is important because belly—or abdominal—fat wraps around the body’s internal organs, including the liver, and can be dangerous. However, he says women trying to improve muscle strength in their upper body as well as their overall mood and food intake, should take evening exercise, The men in the trial were less sensitive to the time of day they exercised, improving their strength in the mornings and evenings. But evening exercise was found to be “ideal for men interested in improving heart and metabolic health, as well as emotional wellbeing,” says Dr Arciero. Improving metabolic health means reducing the risk of conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

We are looking for SCG men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. Call (CAM) 623-546-7432 or the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us! You may also find more information about C.H.A.P.S. (including an application form to join) at suncitygrand.com – volunteer central – C.H.A.P.S. Resident Patrol

LEARNING THE SCG COMMUNITY Submitted by Dennis Hanscom C.H.A.P.S. member

Shortly after my move to Sun City Grand some 8 years ago, I ventured out for short drives around Grand to learn a bit more about my new community. On my short drives, I made this discovery about the naming of some of the roads. I learned that Clearview became Mountain View; Limestone became Estrella Vista which became Monteverde; Saddle Ridge became Sandia Park; to the west of Sunrise the road was named Goldwater Canyon and to the east of Sunrise the road was named Goldwater Ridge; and, Calistoga Dr. became Desert Light Dr. which became Parra Dr. which became Alameda Dr. Whew!

after my move, I had a man at my door telling me that I had left my garage door open. He identified himself as being from C.H.A.P.S. and gave me a brief synopsis of what C.H.A.P.S. was about and invited me to come to one of their meetings. It was during my attendance

at that meeting that I decided joining C.H.A.P.S. would be a great way to learn my new community and make a few new acquaintances. After all, they were only asking that I serve two 2-hour shifts per month. (And, I could choose which days I was available to serve.)

WE NEED YOU

Like any volunteer organization we are always looking for new people to step in and help us keep this much needed service running smoothly. Being a member is an excellent way to learn this community. And, a great way to meet new people and develop friendships along the way. Call Carol Murr (CAM) 623-546-7432 or the C.H.A.P.S. office 623546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us! We will put you on our list and someone will contact you to provide info as to when training sessions will be provided.

Initially I was content with knowing the locations of Cimarron and Adobe. And, of course, restaurant locations out on the Autobahn, also known as Bell Road. One evening about a month

C.H.A.P.S. holds its monthly meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at the Sonoran Plaza. Our next meeting will be August 23. C.H.A.P.S. is a volunteer organization made up of approximately 140 residents. C.H.A.P.S. two main functions are Evening Patrol and Vacation Watch. Very briefly we check for open garage doors and street lights that are out when out on Evening Patrol, and we monitor vacated homes whereas we do walk arounds to check for unlocked doors, and unlocked windows when we are out performing Vacation Watch in the morning hours. We always go out in teams of two and drive the vehicles provided by CAM. Those two processes are explained more in depth in previous and watch for future publications. Do you know how many times W. Encantada Dr. changed names? Join C.H.A.P.S. and you will know in no time.

*C.H.A.P.S.: Community Homeowner Association Patrol Service C.H.A.P.S. MEETS THE 4TH TUESDAY EVERY MONTH (except December) AT 1:30 P.M. EVERYONE IS WELCOME. MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH C.H.A.P.S. Grand Lifestyles | August 2022 | suncitygrand.com

MEET YOUR BOARD MEMBER

This is the first in a series of articles about your Board of Directors. It is one initiative of our goals this year to make your board more transparent and better known in the community. Each month, we will give you a glimpse at one board member’s background. We hope this will be interesting to you.

Carol White

Not Another Committee! OK, I admit it – I do enjoy volunteering my time on projects where I feel that my background and expertise would be valuable to the community. I really thought when I moved to Grand in 2014 from Bend, OR that my volunteering days were over – I had retired in 1999 after 34 years in communications and IT, served on several homeowners and club boards, and I was ready to golf, learn pickleball and get in shape – not serve on another committee!

18

Then I spied a little article in the Lifestyles magazine looking for people with Strategic Planning background. That’s a somewhat uncommon skill, and one which I had done successfully on a couple of occasions. My background in sales/marketing, finance, and tech all are critical skills in long range planning – along with the ability to think creatively about an unknown future. “OK, this is just a short-term commitment if I’m chosen, then I’d be done and can get on with my other endeavors,” I said to myself. So, a year on the Strategic Planning Core Committee and I was done. Golf Carol, Golf. By then the LongRange Planning Committee was up and running and two very persuasive friends got me to apply

to “see our vision implemented.” I really liked the work we had produced on the Strategic Plan, and it could be fun and fruitful to try to move some of those ideas and goals along. By now, Grand was nearing its 25th birthday, and even though the community was magnificently planned, it was starting to show its age, and newer communities certainly had amenities that we were all interested in too. Our surveys and research had shown that food & beverage, more socialization opportunities, more up to date technology, and a more updated look to our facilities were high on our residents’ lists – after all, it had been a long time since Del Webb was here and peoples’ desires for a retirement

“lifestyle” were changing. To keep us fresh and vibrant, I felt we needed to attack these areas that both residents and experts had identified. After three years on LRP, I was deeply involved and wanted to make sure things got funded and completed – something that being on LRP couldn’t guarantee. It seemed a natural evolution to run for the board, which I did in 2021. Although Covid and other delays have slowed us down, I think we are now making progress. In retrospect, we, as a community, didn’t have the resources and tools for doing projects of this scale, so we needed to gain some outside assistance, as we learned how to operate in this new environment. Think about it

Grand Lifestyles | August 2022 | suncitygrand.com

– not much besides carpet, paint and tile has happened here in the first 25 years – it didn’t need to – and the changes we are now undertaking require a much more diverse set of skills and processes. I’m enjoying being on the board, but my golf and pickleball games are not getting any better and that hoped for “getting in shape” is but a vague memory. If we can get these projects lined up

for funding, keep our budgets in good shape and continue on the path of our strategic plan, I will look forward to bringing more people onboard to help with the vision. We have many smart, forward-looking, younger people in the community, and I will happily give them my chair – and finally go talk to our wonderful golf staff about my golf game.

‘Mountain Fountain’ symbolizes drought conditions, conservation costs By Delarita Ford Communications Coordinator

A monument that remains a Village Center landmark is a fountain of fond memories for many Sun City Grand (SCG) residents and guests, who recall a time before the water stopped streaming down the massive structure, which now stands dry and desolate. Referred to as the “Mountain Fountain,” by SCG General Manager Rod Rankin in his report to the Board of Directors at the July 14 meeting, he recommended removing the rock sculpture among some concerns about how the community can address “leaks and wasting water.” While discussing the water issue, he commended staff for being “really proactive,” reviewing all bodies of water in the community. In addition to the “Mountain Fountain,” recognized as a slip hazard by risk prevention specialists, Rankin also explained how costs to repair the huge rock formation overshadows costs to simply remove and replace it with a more suitable water architecture. “We have an issue with the large water feature—I call it the ‘Mountain Fountain—in the Village Center. We’re losing over 3,800 gallons of water every 15 days. That’s over 255 gallons of water leaking (per day). To fix that leak, we need to dismantle the entire fountain. I’m recommending to the Board that we reroute the water flow to ensure circulation in the ponds and not reassemble the water feature -- the ‘Mountain Fountain.’ As we design Village Center 2, we can incorporate a water feature that is more respectful of our current Western water situation here in Arizona,” Rankin said.

Pouring Facts

During his presentation to the Board, Rankin described how the overall sinking water situation impacts SCG and neighboring communities. 20

“Lake Mead is in a critical state of decline due to the mega drought. Las Vegas is outlawing turf. And the entire West is drying up. It is predicted that Arizona will not receive the Colorado water after 2025, with all water rights to the lake and the river going to California. Due to this, we expect the federal government to go to Tier 2—we’re already in Tier 1—Tier 2 conservation act in August of this year, next month. And then to Tier 3 in a year,” said Rankin. The community must address turf grass and conservation, noted Rankin of one of the main initiatives, which he called “the

name of the game,” in conserving “that precious resource we call water.” He stated the need to prohibit new turf installation, limit overseeding of turf in the winter and remove existing turf. Tier 2 also requires inspecting fountains and pools to ensure they are not leaking and wasting water, he added. From proposing to remove the beloved water monument – defunct since February when needed repairs/risks were identified – to replacing grassy turf and limiting installation to such areas as people and pet parks, sports fields, etc., Rankin assured

of many proactive efforts underway to endure a fluid situation steadily affecting the resort-like community. A detailed, monthly water update on the community’s water conservation efforts is provided on SCG’s website.

will ensure Arizona remains a land of opportunity for families and for businesses large and small. As we’ve done over the past seven and a half years, we came together, brought everyone to the table and delivered for the people of this great state. And by doing so, we are leaving Arizona better and stronger than we found it,” stated Ducey in a press release. The $1 billion investment plan over three years will fund projects to bring more water to the state. The legislation allows an allotment to the Water Infrastructure Finance Authority (WIFA), expands its responsibilities to provide loans and grants to water providers/entities for importing water into Arizona, conservation, efficiency and reuse, plus new technologies, according to the release. Noting the organization will keep financing the design/construction of water and wastewater infrastructure projects with federal and state funds, WIFA can acquire, store, and sell new imported water as well as engage in private-public partnerships to help with projects through the funds. The projects will also help ensure families, businesses and agriculture continue having long-term water supplies, according to the press release, noting the governor’s plan to address water supply for the next 100 years, considering the state’s growing population, and competition for water.

Flowing Funds

The regional water crisis has a trickledown effect as the topic of an impending drought flows to SCG. Not exempt from the growing concerns of predicted water woes, the community joins state and local municipalities, which have taken necessary steps to retain and conserve water. Arizona Governor Doug Ducey recently signed legislation to enact a $1 billion investment to augment water supplies. “This legislation is crucial for our continued growth and prosperity. It

In the release, Salt River Project Associate General Manager Dave Roberts credited Arizona for its long history of being at the “forefront of wise water management,” based on decades of major investments including Central Arizona Project. Salt River Project, and Arizona Municipal Water Users Association Executive Director Warren Tenney also praised recent legislation to invest in bringing more water to the state despite “worsening conditions on the Colorado River.”

Dripping Dry

Since 2020, the city of Surprise has planned how much water is needed through 2035, accounting for a

Grand Lifestyles | August 2022 | suncitygrand.com

population boom up to 4.2%, according to published reports. While the water service area growth rate is expected at 6% through 2035, projections for water demand call for more than 22,000-acre feet of water by then, which contrasts to 2020, when the city’s demand was less than 10,000-acre feet. The city remains prepared since the state has dealt with the more than 21-year drought conditions from the Colorado River system, and the threat of limited city access to “the full allotment” of the Central Arizona Project. Surprise Water Resources Manager Michael Boule shared a water status report with Surprise City Council on June 7, noting the city started making plans to combat drought conditions two years ago during initial talks of water conservation efforts. A timeline included crafting a Drought Preparedness Plan in April 2021, putting information on the city’s website, city council adopting an updated action plan, and Surprise becoming among the first Valley cities to implement its plan before the Arizona Department of Water Resources called for a Tier 1 designation on the Colorado River, this year, lessening the amount of water Arizona receives “from the lakes that feed the river,” according to published reports. Just as Rankin recently noted to the Board, Surprise heads also anticipate a Tier 2a shortage declared on the Colorado River in August, to go in effect 2023; if a Tier 3 shortage is called, then Surprise will witness a reduction of 400-acre feet of water from the Central Arizona Project. Reports state the Arizona Water Banking Authority would even assist with water from supplies stored for shortages, which may help the city through about 2026. Surprise City Council may possibly vote on that arrangement in August for those affected by city water; whereas the largest private provider in the city is reportedly EPCOR, which covers nearly one-third of Surprise, including some homes north of Bell Road, west of Loop 303 and Coyote Lakes in the east. 21

PHIL AXELROD

Meets 12 times on Tue 6/14- 8/30 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM FEE $30

Let's meet weekly to discuss the current events of the day. Be prepared to actively participate as we debate the pros and cons of the topics selected by the group. Each participant is encouraged to bring an item or topic currently in the public's eye. We are not limited to political items for discussion. At the beginning of each session, I will poll the group for topics. Once we have a complete list we will vote on all topics and the one garnering the most votes will be the first topic discussed at each meeting. Lively discussions will ensue, followed by resolutions. If you enjoy brisk and vigorous debate, this is the group for you.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS: THE GOLDEN AGE OF TELEVISION, PART 1 STEVE KATZ

Meets 10 times on Wed 6/22 - 8/24 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM FEE $30

Cassidy and The Lone Ranger to Gunsmoke and Bonanza; and children’s programming, both animated and live action, like Howdy Doody, Disneyland, The Mickey Mouse Club and Rocky and Bullwinkle. But we’ll also consider a few series that probably most of you have never even heard of like Martin Kane, Private Eye and Rocky King, Inside Detective. You won’t just be teased by a few seconds of clips of each series but will see anywhere from a few minutes to as much as 25-30 minutes of many. For about half the series we will be playing Name that Tune to see if you can identify the series from its theme music; for just about every series, we will be asking trivia questions regarding the characters, the performers who played them and the like; and in about half the classes we will quiz you on some of your favorite commercials from the Golden Age.

60’S ROCK: CREAM VINNIE BRUNO

Meets 1 time on Thur 8/4 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM FEE $15

This will be the first of 3 semesters of more than everything you ever wanted to know about 50’S TELEVISION—it will be the ultimate nostalgia class with more trivia that any retiree’s brain can handle. You think you know 50’s TV trivia? We’ll see! We’ll of course look at the classics with which you are all familiar: variety shows like Texaco Star Theater, Your Show of Shows and Toast of the Town; sitcoms like I Love Lucy, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best and The Honeymooners; early quiz shows like What’s My Line and I’ve Got a Secret and later big money quiz shows like The $64,000 Question and Twenty-One which ended in grand jury probes and congressional investigations; more westerns than you can imagine from Hopalong

Get out of the heat this summer and join Vinnie Bruno for the premiere of 60’s Rock: Cream, his newest lecture. Cream was formed in 1966 and is widely regarded as rock's first supergroup. We will journey with the band through their early days as members of many blues bands as they move toward the formation of Cream. Cream's music spanned many genres including hard rock (Sunshine of Your Love), psychedelic rock (White Room) to blues rock (Crossroads). Their album "Wheels of Fire" became the first platinum-selling double rock album in history. We will follow the band through their infamous internal band conflicts, to their farewell concert and to the trio's widely anticipated reunion tour in 2005. Cream was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

You will also have the opportunity to ask questions of the candidates during the Q&A sessions following the presentations.

SOUND & LIGHTING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO KEEP THE GRAND’S ENTERTAINMENT “BEST IN CLASS”

The Sun City Grand Music Club and Drama and Comedy Club justifiably receive accolades for the many fine musical, dramatic and comedy shows that they bring to our stages each year. But it’s true for any live entertainment venue – the shows are only as good as the sound and lighting teams make them. We are currently looking for residents who want to practice their existing skills or learn new ones for the upcoming season starting in the Fall 2021. And the best part is absolutely no prior experience or knowledge is required. We will train anyone who is interested in learning the lighting and sound systems. With the many performances we are planning well into 2022, and the different roles each require, there will be much need for more trained technical people. This is a great way to learn some new skills and become a member of the Grand’s entertainment team. If you have ever wanted to be a part of Live Theater, this is your opportunity. Now that we are returning to a full schedule of performances, the need is even greater for more people to join our lighting and sound teams. For more information, contact Larry Dirksen – 623-363-5040 (Sound); or Bob Nix – 623-214-8280 (Lighting)

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT

NEW FEATURES WITH WINDOWS 11 Dear Cappie, I have the option to download Windows 11, but I am reluctant because it took me so long to learn how to use this current version. What are the major changes? Will I still be able to use apps currently on my computer? Les from SCG Dear Les, There always is a learning curve to master any new operating system or any new application. You may postpone that learning curve until October, 2025, but that is when Microsoft will no longer support Windows 10, effectively forcing you to move to the latest operating system: Windows 11. Regarding apps currently on your computer, yes, they should work without any issues after an upgrade. Many changes in Windows 11 are “design changes” only: n Default Start Menu: The start menu and the taskbar were moved to the center of the screen (but users can move them left, right or top as they could in Windows 10.) n Overall Design (user interface): Windows 11 now looks more like a Mac with its lighter

pastel colors, rounded corners for all windows, and a more simplified and cleaner interface. n Elimination of Live Tiles: Windows 11 does not have Live Tiles, which display bits of information that users could view in Windows 10 without opening the corresponding apps (like the latest news or weather.) n Snap Assist: Windows 11 allows you to arrange apps neatly on the desktop, making it much simpler to see and use all the open windows at once. Just take the screen you want to snap, hover over the Maximize button and select one of the 4 or 6 layouts (depending on the size of your monitor screen), then select from the preview the next app you want to snap, and so on.

Other significant changes: Microsoft Store o Android users now can run many of their smartphone Android apps on their PC by downloading them from the Microsoft store. o The Microsoft store has been redesigned to make it easier to find apps, games, movies, etc. n The Teams app is now Microsoft’s default video conferencing app, slowly replacing Skype--but you can still download Skype from the Microsoft Store. n The tablet feature of Windows 11 provides more touch screen and stylus features. Windows 11 users will be able to set up virtual desktops much like they do with Macs. Users can toggle between multiple desktops simultaneously for work and personal use. n

Next month Cappie will address some additional features and differences between the old and new operating systems. However, there are numerous videos on the internet to show you most of the major changes of Windows 11. Additionally, the Sun City Grand Computers Club teaches multiple classes Grand Lifestyles | August 2022 | suncitygrand.com
