PACE OF PLAY
Brandon Dougherty, PGA Director of Golf
The golf season is in full swing, and we would like to provide everyone with some great best practices to play ready golf. It’s important to remember that the pace of play of the group in front of you can have a significant influence on your round. In consideration of the players behind you, we appreciate you reading our pace of play guidelines and some helpful tips. It is important that you understand these before starting your round. Our goal is for each resident to be able to play at a pace that is comfortable and enjoyable for them, and as such, we encourage you to choose a TEE TIME & TEE BOX that aligns your preferred pace of play with the expectations detailed below.
The Grand Golf pace of play expectation is 4-HOURS to complete your round. If you are more comfortable playing at a slower pace, we would suggest that you utilize tee times later in the day to avoid influencing your fellow resident’s rounds.
RECOMMENDED TEE BOXES
Driver Distance 275 Yards – Black Tees
Driver Distance 250 Yards – Blue Tees
Driver Distance 225 Yards – White Tees
Driver Distance 200 Yards – Gold Tees
Driver Distance 175 Yards – Red Tees
Driver Distance 150 or Less – Orange Tees
Our player assistants are positioned throughout the golf course to help with any needs you might have during your round. Additionally, our player assistants monitor the TIME and SPACE of all groups and take the following steps to ensure pace of play stays on target:
1) If your foursome falls more than two shots behind the group in front of you,
our player assistants will provide an initial friendly reminder that you regain your position within two holes. We understand that brief delays happen from time to time but appreciate you regaining your position shortly thereafter.
2) If your group is unable to move back into position after two holes with the help of a player assistant, you will be provided options to move back into position, such as skipping the necessary number of shots, or offered to restart your round behind the last group, when you will not feel pushed by anyone behind you.
Helpful Tips to Improve Pace of Play
Playing at a better pace is not about hurrying up or rushing around the course. It is simply about being more efficient with your valuable time, as well as everyone else’s. Saving 10 seconds per shot can improve your overall time by 15 minutes. Here are some helpful tips for improving pace of play: Choose the appropriate tees Play from a set of tees that is comfortable
for you – one where you are more likely to hit lofted irons into greens instead of hybrids or fairway woods. It is acceptable for players in the same group to play from different tees.
Try alternate forms of play to speed up your round
Match play, Stableford, best-ball and other formats are easy and fun alternatives to individual stroke play because not every player has to hole out on every hole. There are multiple resources online and in print to learn about the many different golf formats. Try one out.
Minimize your time on the tee
On the tee it is usually acceptable for players to “hit when ready.” You can also save time by playing a provisional ball (Rule 27-2) if you think your original ball might be lost or out of bounds.
Play ready golf
Play whenever it is safe to do so. The old etiquette of “you’re away” no longer applies.
Plan your shot before you get to your ball
Once you are off the tee, think ahead. Determine your yardage and make your club selection before it is your turn to

If you want to have more fun on the golf course and maybe play a little faster, TEE IT FORWARD may be just the game for you. TEE IT FORWARD can help you play from tees best suited to your game, based on how far you hit the ball.
This new national initiative from The PGA of America and United States Golf Association will take place at golf facilities nationwide from July 5-17, but you can do this anytime.

play. Very often, you can do this while others are playing, without disruption. If you take your glove off between shots, have it back on before it is your turn to play.
Keep your pre-shot routine short
Pick your line of play once and trust yourself. Try to take no more than one or
Guidelines for selectinG tees
Finish out
Finish short putts on the green rather than marking them. You’ll probably make more. Be helpful to others in your group
Follow the flight of all tee shots, not just your own. Once in the fairway, help others look for their ball if you already know the location of yours. Volunteer to fill in a divot or rake a bunker for another player if needed. Be ready to attend the flagstick for others.
Keep up with the group in front of you
Your correct position on the course is immediately behind the group in front of you, not immediately in front of the group behind you. Arrive at your next shot just before the group in front leaves the area in front of you. If you are consistently not able to keep up and a gap opens in front of you, invite the group behind you to play through.
two practice swings, then set up to the ball and play your shot. Most importantly, be ready to hit when it is your turn. Be efficient after your shot too. Start moving toward your next shot promptly. Hit first, then search Play your shot before going over to help your playing partner.
It’s okay to pick up
The handicap system allows for a maximum score. If you reach it, pick up, regroup, and try again the next hole. The max scores is a net double bogey for any player. Par of hole + 2 Strokes + Any handicap stroke(s) that the player receives on that hole.

Mild Dehydration: Is it Causing Memory Loss, Depression, Anxiousness, or Focus Problems?

If you notice that your mood is low or your anxiety level is high, or you’re struggling to focus mentally or having trouble with recall, or are just generally feeling irritable, it could be that you need to drink some water. Even mild dehydration can dampen your mood and more, causing you to feel more depressed, anxious, tense, irritable, or antagonistic. That’s in addition to zapping your energy, increasing pain levels, and compromising your ability to concentrate, according to recent research.
After all, water plays a vital role in every function in your brain and body. Your body is made up of water—roughly 75% when you are born, and closer to 60 % as an adult—and your brain is roughly 80% water. Your body won’t last more than 3 days without water, but it can survive 2 to 3 months on water alone!
WATER, DEHYDRATION, AND THE BRAIN AND BODY
Water is critical to virtually every function in your body. It is needed to regulate your body temperature; cushion your joints and lubricate
Specific to brain function, water plays a vital role in producing and balancing hormone levels; maintaining healthy protective fluid levels to protect your brain and spinal cord from injury; creating new neurons and maintaining overall cellular brain health; flushing out metabolic waste that occurs in the brain, and ensuring healthy blood flow to the brain bringing oxygen and vital nutrients. It’s no wonder we need to drink an adequate amount of water every day to maintain health!
Dehydration happens when you lose more water than you take in, and your body struggles to carry out its normal functions. Technically, a body water loss of 1-2%, is considered mild dehydration, and it is more common than you think.
Children and older adults get dehydrated more easily than most people.
One study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that 17% to 28% of older adults in the United States experience dehydration.
More than half a million hospital visits a year have
Hot, dry weather, high altitudes, and vigorous exercise are all common causes of mild dehydration for any age, as well as any kind of illness. Older adults naturally have less water in their bodies, and they tend to have conditions or take medications that increase the likelihood of dehydration. That means even a minor illness in an elderly person can cause dehydration.
Of course, what you consume can make you more dehydrated. Taking diuretics, consuming salty foods, and drinking beverages high in alcohol, caffeine, and sugar can contribute to water loss. Also, it just may be that you don’t drink enough water or hydrating foods (juicy fruits and vegetables).
COMMON SIGNS OF MILD DEHYDRATION
Medical experts provide the following symptoms as telltale signs of mild dehydration:
n feeling thirsty
n lightheadedness
n dizziness
n dry mouth
n tiredness (especially midafternoon fatigue)
n having dark colored, strongsmelling urine
n urinating less frequently
COGNITIVE AND MENTAL HEALTH SYMPTOMS OF MILD DEHYDRATION
In addition to the more general signs of dehydration, experts have noted compromised cognitive function resulting from even the slightest amount of dehydration. Indeed, one study examined the effects of mild dehydration of 2% on cognition and found impaired performance in tasks that require attention, short-term memory skills, and physical movement. Additional research on mild dehydration, this time with less than 1.5% water loss in healthy young women, found it was associated with compromised mood, increased perception of task difficulty, lowered concentration, and headaches. Increased anxiety was also noted in a study on dehydration published in the British Journal of Nutrition. The researchers observed 20 healthy women go without fluids for 24 hours. The women experienced confusion, decreased alertness, and increased sleepiness during their period of dehydration. Interestingly, a similar study, but conducted on men, found slightly different results. It showed a decrease in vigilance and working memory and an increase in tension/anxiety and fatigue
FROM THE FITNESS DIRECTOR
Allison Adams Fitness Director
14 Grand Lifestyles | February 2023 | suncitygrand.com
What’s more, mild dehydration is associated with reduced brain volume, according to one experimental study. Cognitive deficits related to dehydration may have real-life consequences too, another study found. It examined 40 randomly selected healthy pilots. The dehydrated pilot group showed significantly poorer flight performance and spatial cognition test scores.
TIPS FOR STAYING HYDRATED
Make hydration a priority to ensure optimal brain health including these tips. Drink plenty of water. Your daily water needs vary depending on your age, physical activity level, and the weather. As a general rule, drink 8-10 glasses of water a day (a glass being 8 ounces).
Consume fruits and vegetables. Remember, you can keep
your brain well hydrated by consuming water-rich foods, such as juicy fruits and vegetables such as lettuce, celery, bok choy, radish, cucumber, zucchini, watercress, tomatoes, green bell peppers, and asparagus.
Limit what dehydrates you. Avoid drinking sugary beverages, highly caffeinated drinks (energy drinks), alcohol, fruit juice, sodas, and diet drinks as much as possible. Sugar, alcohol, and caffeine can make dehydration worse.
WATER: THE MOLECULE OF LIFE
Help your brain and body to work optimally by staying properly hydrated, and they will work better in return. You’ll likely enjoy better psychological well-being and moods—and you may even get a better night’s sleep!

The Formation of C.H.A.P.S.
Article submitted by Dennis Hanscom
C.H.A.P.S. member
With so many new homeowners joining the Sun City Grand community, we thought a word or two about the origination of our volunteer group C.H.A.P.S. (Community Homeowners Association Patrol Service) was in order so here goes:
Ed Harrold, Director of Sun City Grand’s Community Association Management (CAM), introduced the idea of a vacation watch program at a 2001 meeting of Block Watch volunteers. A group of fifteen interested Sun City Grand homeowners met to organize a vacation watch service for residents who spend weeks/ months away from their homes. With about two dozen volunteers and two golf carts, Vacation Watch inspections began in March 2001. In January 2004, C.H.A.P.S. expanded its service to include night-time patrolling of Sun City Grand neighborhoods. Today there are approximately 140 active volunteers using three Association vehicles. C.H.A.P.S. plays a large role in maintaining a low crime rate in Sun City Grand.
Our group serves two main functions: Evening Patrol and Vacation Watch.
Evening Patrol: Teams of two drive around in the evening and check for open garage doors, and streetlights that are not operational. And, we report any other suspicious activity. The SCG community is broken down into 6 zones. When a patrol team goes out on patrol, they will only patrol one zone as determined by the dispatcher who mans the desk in the C.H.A.P.S. office. The zone is methodically driven by turn-by-turn navigation as called out to the driver by the navigator. When an open door is spotted the team stops and notifies the homeowner the garage door is open. Our goal is to provide this notification for the sake of the homeowner’s safety. We also stop when the garage is open high enough for someone or something to crawl under. When we see a non-functioning streetlight, we stop, record the pole number and file a report with APS. Evening Patrol is a 2-hour shift.
Vacation Watch: This is a FREE service! A homeowner
must be away for a minimum of 2 weeks to sign up for this service. A team of two goes out in the early morning hours to check vacation homes in a section of Grand that is determined by the office coordinator. We simply perform a walk around of a home checking for unlocked doors and windows. At no time do we enter a home. Vacation Watch is a 2-hour shift. Even if you do not become a C.H.A.P.S. member at the present time, we encourage you to sign up for this FREE service that offers peace of mind.
Classroom and in-car training are provided prior to being turned loose on your own. Being a C.H.A.P.S. volunteer we ask that you serve two days per month. That is not mandatory, but simply a guideline. And, yes, you can be one of those lucky snowbirds who get to escape for the summer and still be an active C.H.A.P.S. member.
Community Association Management (CAM) provides our group with vehicles to drive (no golf carts). You have likely already seen one of our white vehicles driving through the community. They each
display a yellow magnetic sign with C.H.A.P.S. in black letters on the signs.
WE NEED YOU!
Like any volunteer organization we are always looking for new people to step in and help us keep this much needed service running smoothly. Being a member is an excellent way to learn this community. And, a great way to meet new people and develop friendships along the way.
Call Carol Murr (CAM) 623546-7432 or the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 if you may be interested in joining us. We meet the fourth Tuesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at the Sonoran Plaza. However, due to a room scheduling conflict for the month of February we will be meeting in the main lobby of the Palm Center, 1:30 p.m., February 28.
We invite you to check us out by attending one of our meetings. Everyone is welcome!

MEET YOUR BOARD MEMBER
This is the seventh of seven articles introducing each Board Member to the community. One of the Board’s five goals is to increase transparency and inclusion throughout the community as we come out of the past two years of Covid restrictions.
Aiken
We are near the end of this Board’s year together. It has been very fulfilling watching the energy put forth by all seven members to support that goal. While we have each committed to perform the duties bestowed on us, I believe we have done so as
often as possible as a team. It has been a privilege to lead this team the past several months as we were faced with many obstacles last spring and believe we will end our current term with better tools in place for future Boards to use to advance the growth and success of Grand. So why the heck did I ever want to become a Board Member? My answer is not as simple as most would think. I learned about the value of community service many years ago. I was asked by our company’s owner what service organization I was going to join while on a market tour in
Spokane, Washington. He suggested Rotary. Having some social skills, my reply was that Rotary sounded like a good choice. During the next decade, I learned first hand the value of “service above self” and the rewards that come from helping others when in need.
Following retirement in 2003, Linda and I were “winter residents” for several years. I was excited to get back to playing ball and some golf while enjoying our home at Priest Lake in north Idaho during the summers. In 2007, we agreed that our friends were in Arizona and it was time to make Grand our permanent home. At that time I had yet to attend any board meetings or even be concerned with the future of our new playground, the Grand.
I became President of the Softball Club a few years later and found out that if I wanted to get things done to benefit the Softball Club, I needed to go through the CAM office, one or more advisory committees, and eventually, the Board of Directors. Quite a daunting process! That is when I began to take interest in getting more involved.
Fast forward ten years and I remain excited about the community we call home. I may not have always been amiable to some past decisions, yet have and will continue to do what I can to support them. That is one lesson any Board Member needs to learn. Following the opportunity to express
your support or opposition to any proposal, you need to be willing to support the outcome of the vote. Sometimes that is not as easy as it may sound, yet critical.
Linda and I found Surprise as many of you…. through a friend. After driving through the entrances in 1999 and seeing the beautiful golf courses (only two at the time), and then finding the softball complex Del Webb had invested in, I was hooked. While we were not planning to retire just yet, we made the commitment to build a home. The lot was chosen, the model selected, and all design decisions were made in three days. A couple years later some health challenges and the loss of two very close friends brought us to the realization that this life we live is not forever. We chose to retire much earlier than planned and today agree it was the very best decision ever made.
In closing, I hope we are able to attract new Board members who care for this community as much as this current board does. Think about it. Yes, it is work, but if it was easy, it would not have much value. Thanks to so many for your continued support.
Stay Well, Keep Moving, and Be Kind to Others !!
BOARD PRESIDENT Bob

nniversary of Grand Ladies Golf 25th A
January of 2023 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Grand Ladies Golf Association becoming a Chartered Club. GLGA is celebrating this milestone with many events. Our opening season in November 2022 started with a round of golf followed by our annual meeting and a precelebration of lunch at the Pavilion and champagne flowing into the afternoon. Back in 1998 the Granite Golf Professional, Joe Edwards, helped approximately 25 ladies start this club and the Charter was granted in January 1998. An opportunity for ladies to play golf in a friendly and competitive environment was born. It welcomed newcomers to GRAND and they were able to meet and make new friends in their new home.
In the beginning, the ladies would go down to Granite Falls near the bulletin boards and sign up for golf on a sheet of paper for the following Tuesday, our official play day. A member of the league took that sheet home and manually paired up the ladies and made up the scorecards for the following week. Strokes were put on the card by hand in those days. Well, with 25 ladies it was not too much of a job, but by 2004 and 2005 we had a total of over 400 ladies in the club. We filled morning and afternoon shotguns with 144 ladies. Our golf Member Guest event was a one-day affair, and we took two courses in the morning with a lunch in the Kiva Ballroom. Creativity was the name of the game. Our themes ranged from
Grand Matinee, Denim and Diamonds, (we had to get special permission from the golf professional to wear denim on the course that day), and Grand Monopoly, with our very own Mr. Monopoly in attendance to collect scorecards. Other themed events were and are held each season and the event committees produce golf and fun with creativity and style. We finally stepped into the technology world and were able to sign up for golf online. Our scorecards were generated by computers putting our handicap strokes on them. We designed a website with lots of information about our league, which helped new members assimilate into the group. Scoring was still completed by hand with a committee. It could take several days to know who won and how much they won. Today we have moved into the 21 Century with the purchase of the golf program, Golf Genius. The GAC was instrumental in requesting this purchase from our CAM Board and now all the GRAND golf clubs have
access to this program.
The league along with the GAC was instrumental in getting the golf bathrooms updated on all the courses. We have been involved in
many charities over the years with special tournaments for Children’s Cancer Camps, battered women shelters, hospital fundraiser for infants and maternity wing and an animal shelter. GLGA has raised more than $100,000 over the past 25 years for those in our area with special needs. We currently give continuing support to the Valley View Community Food Bank in the west valley with food and money collected by our generous membership. Our club has dropped in numbers over the years with a steady membership of about 280 ladies. We continue to hold fun events, and we welcome new residents or new golfers to enjoy GRAND golf on Tuesdays.

MUSICAL – I LOVE YOU, YOU’RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE—SOLD OUT Book and Lyrics by Joe DiPietro, Music by Jimmy Roberts
A musical romantic comedy that ran offBroadway for over 5,000 performances making it the second longest-running show in offBroadway history. SYNOPSIS: This celebration of the mating game takes on the truths and myths behind that contemporary conundrum known as “the relationship.” Through sketches and songs, Act I explores the journey from dating and waiting to love and marriage, while Act II reveals the agonies and triumphs of in-laws, trips in the family car, and pick-up techniques of the geriatric set. This hilarious revue pays tribute to those who have loved and lost, to those who have fallen on their face at the portal of romance, to those who have dared to ask, “Say, what are you doing Saturday night?”

2023 SPRING CONCERT
“THE GLORY OF LOVE”
The 2023 Grand Singers and Chorale Spring Concert is entitled “The Glory of Love”, which embodies the spring season as performed by the 100-voice Chorus and 32-voice Chorale under the direction of Pamela Weir. Acknowledging various examples of love “With You”, we praise America’s passion of baseball at the “Ballgame”, complete with a yummy “Oo, Barbeque!”. Via Words and Music by Billy Hill, our spring concert continues, in a Gospel swing, “The Glory of Love”, and Carole King reminds us that “You’ve Got a Friend”. Let’s not forget clandestine love, which might be found in a sleazy dive (where “Hernando’s Hideaway” wasn’t so hidden) and confessed by Disney’s villains in a medley of three songs. In the end, what could be more important than honoring the love of our country by singing a dramatic arrangement of “God Bless America”?
“Never My Love” was a popular love song in the 1960’s and one our Grand Singers enjoy singing. Tickets go on sale $15 beginning February 1, 2023, and are available online at www. scgrandmusicclub.com or www.suncitygrand.com or the Activities Desk (open M-F from 8 AM to 4 PM). ANNUAL HOLIDAY Lunch for Golf Employees
In 2002 Sherri Estlund along with her husband Mike started a tradition of providing a holiday lunch for all the golf employees. Little did they know, twenty years later it would still be alive and thriving!
The Grand Ladies Golf Association (GLGA) took over this project a number of years ago when Sherri, Mike and Sue Kamke said that they needed help. Since then, GLGA has provided the volunteer Elves to seek donations. At the 18 Hole Men’s Club opening banquet Nancy Foy (President of the GLGA) and Sue Kamke dressed up in their Christmas finest to ring the bell. The Men’s Club is instrumental to the success of the Holiday Lunch. Nancy and Sue say that it is not unusual to see $20s and even $50s dropped into the donation box. At the
GLGA opening luncheon the Elves were out again ringing the bell. The Grand Lady Golfers stepped up and continued their generosity both monetarily and giving their time. In addition to the various golf clubs the Elves ring the bell outside the golf shops during the month of November. The golfing community has really embraced this cause and are so very generous with their contributions.
Over the years the Olive Garden has been the primary provider of the lunch. On a cold December day the Elves drop off lasagna, salad, bread sticks, cookies and beverages to the three maintenance buildings and the three Pro Shops. The maintenance buildings turn their break rooms into a festive holiday scene while enjoying their special meal.
In our hectic world it is so nice to say that here in Grand we are still ready and willing to help out our friends. Thank you to the golfing community for continuing this great tradition for our wonderful golf workers.
The tradition continues... 32 Grand Lifestyles | February 2023 | suncitygrand.com

Biblical Citizenship in Modern America created by David Barton of Wallbuilders, and Rick Green, Patriot Academy, is an 8-week study of how the Constitution and the Bible are foundational to one another. This study teaches the Constitution and its founding fathers' mindset as they wrote the three founding documents: The Declaration of Independence, Constitution and the Bill of Rights. It speaks to the duty of Christians to be informed voters. Citizens have a responsibility to be informed and to be stewards of the Constitutional Republic our founding fathers have given us.
43 Grand Lifestyles | February 2023 | suncitygrand.com

This study goes in depth of the intent of the founding fathers by letters written to one another during the time it was written. It is a living Constitution but not an evolving one. It is a timeless document that when adhered to will give us prosperity and peace. Instructor can be reached at 712-251-8822 w/ questions.

12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

When we first lose a loved one, we can hardly put one foot in front of the other. Death breaks our hearts and unsettles our souls. Grief is a severe, self-limiting state, but by no means a permanent condition. Don't expect too much of yourself when you are learning to cope with loss. Also, grief is not always the result of a death. When your life is shattered by the unexpected - a terrifying biopsy, loss of work, a partner decides your marriage is over and more. To hide grief is asking for more problems. When grief remains unexpressed, it hardens, and we often become scared. This 4 week course will offer many suggestions to help you move forward.

9:00 AM -10:30 AM FEE: $20
"A house built on sand cannot stand." Our national home, the United States of America, is not built on sand. It is built on the bedrock of our Constitution, withstanding the storms of politics, abused and misused, even civil war. Many try to emulate it, none succeed in every aspect. It remains unique. This course is not about the current conflicts among political parties or angry adherents for one side or the other. It is about a document which has stood the test of time and conflict. It makes us who we are as a nation. It defines American culture. Our first session addresses events from the first settlement of Europeans on our eastern seaboard, through our War for Independence, to the making of the Constitution. The second session addresses the Bill of Rights and ratification of the other amendments. Our third and final session examines some landmark decisions of the Supreme Court (personal choices of mine). My hope is that this little narrative nugget will capture the attention of those truly interested in this historic document.

Through improving our wisdom we can effectively work to change things for the better from a place of peace rather than agitation or anger. 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
FEE: $15
When the US Army ordered troops into Arizona Territory in the 19th century to protect and defend newly established settlements, military men often brought their wives and families, particularly officers who might be stationed in the west for years. Most of the women were from refined, eastern-bred families with little knowledge of the
territory. Their letters, diaries, and journals from their years on army posts reveal untold hardships and challenges. They learned to cope with the sparseness, the heat, sickness, and danger, including wildlife they never imagined. These women were bold, brave, and compassionate. They became an integral part of military posts that peppered the West and played an important role in civilizing the untamed frontier. Combined with research tracing their movements from post to post, their personal stories personify the tragedies and triumphs many early military wives endured. This class is online on ZOOM. The link will be sent to the email address on file with your Grand Learning account. Please call the day before class if you didn't receive the link - remember to check your SPAM folder.

THE DECADE OF THE 50S SORENSEN, KEN
Meets 1 time on We 4/5/23
10:00 AM - 11:30 AM
FEE: $15
When you hear the term, the 1950s, people often think of a simpler time. They think of the explosion of television and rock and roll music. TV shows that dominated that era include: I Love Lucy, Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best and Maverick. They think of civil rights and how the court cases of that decade had effects across the cultural spectrum. Movies came out that dominated the times. The dominant political figure was President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the winning general of D-Day during World War II. The world was struggling with conflicting political agendas and students were taught to hide under their desks in case an atomic bomb went off. Two decades later a Television show came out called Happy Days and that show defined how people viewed the 1950s. It was a simpler time and even a good time. Come and relive those days and see how the major events of that time still have an effect on us today.

BRIDGE CLUB
Building Our Games.
Our club is constantly looking for ways to enhance our members’ bridge experience and to integrate the two aspects of our games – casual (formerly called “social”) bridge and duplicate bridge. Mitchell Weisberg will continue to conduct his bridge classes for beginners and those wishing to refresh their game, starting Wednesday January 11 and continuing for the next five consecutive Wednesdays from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. in the Apache Room of the Chapparal Center.
In addition to the games listed below, we also conduct “Friday Marathon Bridge” sessions. “Marathon Bridge” is a non-duplicate format that enables teams of players to stay together for an entire season. Marathon games are conducted on Fridays. As of February 1st, there are four Marathon series in progress, each of which is held on one of the first, second, third and fourth Fridays of each month. Marathon teams sometimes need substitutes, so there may be an opportunity for new player/members to participate. If you’re interested in participating in this unique format, contact Karen Peterson, kparizona@hotmail.com
Just Play Bridge: (all comers) Wednesdays at 9:30 am. No sign-up needed. Please note that these sessions will be suspended during the six-week course of classes mentioned above.

DRAMA & COMEDY CLUB
The Drama & Comedy Club presents theater entertainment to the community, performing plays and musicals on the Sagebrush Stage and comedy skits at the Cimarron Nightclub. Our motto, “On Stage, Back Stage, A Place for Everyone” describes our belief that we welcome everyone to our club where they can find a place to contribute and feel welcome and productive. We have many opportunities for folks who are organizers or who want to expand their creativity. Most of our members are not actors! Some of our members do have acting and directing experience, and they are ready to share their techniques to those members who want to learn new skills. We offer so many opportunities to be involved in costuming, make-up, marketing, and communication, and technicians for lights and sound. Do you like to redecorate? You might be a wonderful set designer. Are you a DIY kind of guy? Or gal? Join the construction crew building sets that take you to a governor’s office and campaign, or an old English mansion on a foggy night. If you like to greet people, we welcome you to volunteer to be an usher. What a great way to make new friends. We are a fun club! And all this for just $10 a year. Check us out https://gdcc.clubexpress.com/. We also offer dance classes at many levels, sure to fit one of your styles, from beginner to advance tap and jazz. There is also the opportunity to dance with the Grandettes, a favorite Grand tradition, and perform in our Variety Show. This year will be the 23rd season! Not only is dance a great exercise but you will not come out of a class without making new friends. For any inquiries about dance, please contact Robin Kachurak, Dance Committee Chairperson at 818-795-4859.

Caring Quilts are made by many members, washed, and prepped for breast cancer surgery patients. We also make Quilts of Valor and Quilts for Organ Donors. There’s always room for finishing those UFOs among fellow members.

SATURDAYS & THURSDAYS: WEAVERS & SPINNERS

We utilize many types of looms on which we create fabric for household items, clothing and art pieces. Friendly Reminder From Standards
We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

MOMS LIKE ME SUPPORT GROUP
Moms Like Me is a support group whose goal is to reach out to the hurt and hearts of mothers who have experienced the loss of a child. Every day there are thousands of mothers who have lost a child who are living in the depths of despair, feeling they have lost all hope. Our support group falls under the banner of Umbrella Ministries, a network of mothers throughout the United States who have lost a child, and whose soul mission is to reach out with the Lord’s love, to broken hearted mothers. The ways of losing child can be quite broad, from infants to adult children, miscarriages, to a still born death of a full-term pregnancy. Other mothers have lost a child through suicide, a fatal accident or illness.
The death of a child is different than any other loss and only a mother who has experienced that loss can relate to the grief that a mother is feeling. We plan to meet twice a month in Sun City Grand, location to be determined later.

PASSWORD SAFETY TIPS
Dear Cappie,
I was told that I should not use the same password for all my apps and websites but instead create a unique password for every app and website that I visit. Are 8-letter passwords adequate? I don’t use the internet for anything financial like banking.
A Grand Resident
Dear Grand Resident,
Years ago, 6-to-8-digit passwords were considered adequate and simply changing your password periodically was the norm. However, times have changed. Today’s cyber criminals have developed sophisticated tools and techniques that can crack a 6-digit password in 10-12 milliseconds, and an 8-digit password can be cracked in fewer than sixty minutes.
You should NOT use the same password for multiple accounts. If a hacker discovers one of your passwords, they attempt to break into all your personal and professional accounts. You may not care if a criminal accesses the login and password for a dog-video site to which you belong, but what if that criminal tries that same login and password combination for every other website you visit? Do you stream for-pay services like Hulu or Netflix on your devices or TV? Do you purchase apps for your devices? Shop online? Order food online? Utilize additional cloud storage? Or what if that criminal tries your name, address, that same login and password for the banks in your area? Might they find yours?
Whenever a credit card is used to purchase online, you are at risk, even if you do not do your personal banking online. It is not a question of IF cyber criminals will attempt a hack, but WHEN. Every device, application, website, and piece
of software requires a unique and strong password or PIN to keep you safe while online. Here are suggestions to create and maintain safer passwords:
n Never use the same password across multiple social networks, websites, and applications.
n Never use as your name or the name of a family member, your birthdate (year, month, day) or that of family members, your pet’s name, words related to your hobby, job, interests, words found in the dictionary, and especially do not use sequential numbers or letters or common words (12345678, abcd, password).
n Never share your passwords with anyone, including colleagues, IT/support, customer service/helpdesk personnel, family members, friends (except for your legacy contact/designated power of attorney/trustee).
n Never reply to an email/ text message requesting that you click on a link to log into a site, and never reply to a caller who asks for your password or personal information such as your password, date of birth, address, or credit card details.
n Never log into websites or applications that allow you to login using your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or other social media account because as soon as the hacker has your Facebook account credentials, they can
access any other websites, applications, or tools that you have logged into with Facebook or social network credentials.
Today’s websites often require you to change passwords regularly by insisting on new (not repeated) passwords of a minimum length, a mix of letters (upper and lower case), numbers and symbols. It can be overwhelming. Many people keep a pencil-and-paper list of passwords, but then you need to keep the list safe. Password manager software can generate and store complex passwords for all of your accounts, so next month Cappie will present the pros and cons of popular password manager programs. In the meantime, you can fortify your cyber defense without having to memorize long, random strings of letters, numbers and symbols. To fortify at a minimum the sites that may have access to your credit card information, here are tips to create stronger passwords that you still might be able to memorize:
n Chain multiple words together to create extra-long passphrases that are highly resistant to both dictionary attacks and standard brute force attacks.
n Use phrases that either mean something to you or that you associate with a type of website.
n Consider favorite quotes or lyrics plus additional strings of symbols.
Dear Grand Resident,
n Choose uncommon words such as proper nouns, historical figures, archaic words, or even words in multiple languages.
Years ago, 6-to-8-digit times have changed.
n Use an unusual or memorable sentence, a phrase from a speech or toast.
10-12 milliseconds, and
n Use two-factor authentication on all accounts that allow you to do so. Those accounts require two separate pieces of identifying information in order to access the account: username and password is entered and then a onetime code is sent to an authorized email or phone number with the identifying PIN.
You should NOT use all your personal and which you belong, but stream for-pay services online? Utilize additional in your area? Might they
Whenever a credit card question of IF cyber criminals unique and strong password
As mentioned, next month Cappie will compare popular free and purchased software management programs which generate random complex passwords for each of your accounts and stores passwords (and other critical information) so you don’t have to memorize (all but one password to get into the password manager account) or how to keep a paper and pencil list.

Surprise bringing library services in-house
Libraries have always held a very special place in the Surprise community; so much more than just a place to check out books, Surprise libraries have been a place to engage and get involved in our community, a place to learn, grow and innovate. After very careful consideration, the Surprise City Council and City staff decided that the next steps for our City’s growth is to bring our library services in-house. The City has been paying 100% of the cost of the libraries, so the library operations budget that was paid to Maricopa County Library District will be utilized by the City’s new Arts, Culture & Library Department; therefore, there will be no FY23 budget increase needed for the City to operate the libraries.
MCLD will maintain full responsibility of daily library operations, planning and programming until March 3, 2023. The City will begin oversight of Library staffing and programming in March, however, patrons will experience little change until July 1, as they will continue to use their County Library card to check out books and visit the County website for e-books, book holds and all other online services. In July, patrons can expect all library systems and processes to switch to City management. This change will include the launch of a new library website and new library cards, along with enhanced customer experiences and more synergies with City programs and events! While this is an exciting time, marked with new opportunities and ideas, many of the services you’ve grown to love will stay in place. If you have other questions or want to provide feedback, please visit surpriseaz.gov/library or email Kelsey Lamphier, Director of the Arts, Culture & Library Department at Kelsey.Lamphier@ surpriseaz.gov.
