FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
As we settle into 2021, we find ourselves trying to balance the optimism generated by the vaccine distribution and the concerns of continued increase in the number of covid cases. Many of our clubs and activities have done a good job with adjusting their operations and procedures to allow members to enjoy their activities. The Board of Directors is continually monitoring conditions to see what additional program and activities can be safely added. W. David Twiggs General Manager
For example, we refocused the funds that we used to pay for the music for Wine Down Wednesdays into funding the music outside in the Village Center multiple days per week. This allows us to continue providing entertainment to our members but in ways that meet the Arizona Covid Restrictions. The Grand Café has been adjusting to better meet the needs of the members. We constantly as for member feedback and suggestions about the Café’s menus, service delivery, and operations. These have resulted in expansion of daily specials, providing music more evenings, and the offering of the Sunday Brunch. It also resulted in menu and service changes to the snack shack on the golf courses. Another adjustment was the reduction of hours open on Sundays because our members were not using the café Sunday late afternoon and evenings. We will push to have our facilities open anytime the members will support it in numbers that make it financially feasible. We will also be watchful that the operations are not spending resources that are not used and supported by the membership. The outdoor seating allows you to social distance while enjoying the food and music in the Village Center. This is your Village Center, let’s make it a hub for community. Additional opportunities continue to as our performing arts groups continue to plan entertainment at the amphitheater. These events allow ample social distancing while enjoying these productions. This is your community. It has been an extremely trying year for everyone. We want to offer as many safe activities for you as possible. While we are doing many things to make the environment safer, our safety is ultimately our own responsibility. Avoid gathering in groups that are not taking the precautions. We have great outdoor spaces and facilities for your use. Social distance and wear a mask while enjoying this beautiful place.
Thank you, David W. David Twiggs

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS
By The PGA of America Published: Tuesday, May 24, 2011 | 3:25 p.m. To help golfers have more fun on the course and enhance their overall experience by playing from a set of tees best suited to their abilities, The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association have partnered to support “TEE IT FORWARD,” a new national initiative to be proposed for golf facilities nationwide from July 5-17. TEE IT FORWARD encourages all golfers to play the course at a length that is aligned with their average driving distance. Golfers can speed up play by utilizing tees that provide the greatest playability and enjoyment. The program will be promoted this week, at the 72nd Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid, and at both the U.S. Open Championship in June and the U.S. Women's Open Championship in July. “Simply put, TEE IT FORWARD can make golf much more fun for millions of people,” said PGA of America President Allen Wronowski. “We believe that by moving up to another set of tees, golfers will experience an exciting, new approach to the game that will produce more enjoyment and elevate their desire to come back and play even more golf." Barney Adams, the founder of Adams Golf, provided the concept that led to TEE IT FORWARD. By playing from forward tees, amateur golfers have the chance to play the course at the same relative distance as a touring professional would over 18 holes. The playing field is leveled by giving golfers the opportunity to play from distances that are properly aligned with their abilities.
Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations
By The PGA of America Published: Tuesday, May 24, 2011.
TEE IT FORWARD encourages all golfers to play the course at a 10
length that is aligned with their average driving distance. Golfers can speed up play by utilizing tees that provide the greatest playability and enjoyment. The program will be promoted this week, at the 72nd Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid, and at both the U.S. Open Championship in June and the U.S. Women’s Open Championship in July.
“Simply put, TEE IT FORWARD can make golf much more fun for millions of people,” said PGA of America President Allen Wronowski. “We believe that by moving up to another set of tees, golfers will experience an exciting, new approach to the game that will produce more enjoyment and elevate their desire to come back and play even more golf.” Barney Adams, the founder of Adams Golf, provided the concept that led to TEE
IT FORWARD. By playing from forward tees, amateur golfers have the chance to play the course at the same relative distance as a touring professional would over 18 holes. The playing field is leveled by giving golfers the opportunity to play from distances that are properly aligned with their abilities. With many more golfers hitting approach shots with 6- and 7-irons instead of hybrids and long irons, their chances for enjoyment increase. Also, playing from forward tees should result in fewer overall shots, shorter distance traveled on each hole, and potentially, fewer lost balls. “The passion that golfers have for our game has the potential to be enhanced by the TEE IT FORWARD initiative,” said Jim Hyler, president of the United States Golf Association. “This is an innovation that we think will appeal to golfers of all skill
levels because it gives them a new challenge that better aligns with their abilities. We hope that TEE IT FORWARD will be embraced by players and golf facilities across the country.” TEE IT FORWARD is not necessarily about creating a new set of tees — many facilities already have multiple tees in use every day. It is about changing the mindset of golfers in a positive way — encouraging people to consider setting aside playing from 6,5006,700 yards and moving up to a length of 6,000-6,200 yards or moving from 6,0006,200 yards to 5,700-5,800 yards. The 6,700-yard course that many amateur golfers play today is proportionally equivalent to a PGA Tour player competing on a course measuring 8,100 yards — 700 yards or more longer than a typical PGA Tour layout. Jack Nicklaus, who shares the
Grand Lifestyles | February 2021 | suncitygrand.com
record with Walter Hagen for most PGA Championship titles with five and also shares the U.S. Open record with four victories, is a proponent of TEE IT FORWARD. “I love the game of golf but I will be the first to tell you that there are things about our game we need to improve,” Nicklaus said. “Now The PGA of America and the USGA have come together to develop ways that can make the game more attractive and more enjoyable. Tee It Forward is the first of many initiatives we have discussed together, and I think families around the country will enjoy alternate formats like this to make the game more fun. “All of us deeply involved in the game constantly encourage golfers of all skill
levels to play the proper tees, but too often golfers want to bite off as much of the golf course as they can. What ends up suffering is their scorecard and their overall enjoyment. This program should help stimulate people to play the proper tees and maximize the golf experience.” Driver Recommended Distance 18-Hole Yardages

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER
More Aerobically Fit People Are Hospitalized Less Due To COVID-19 Allison Adams Fitness Manager
By Club Industry staff Reprinted from Club Industry, a fitness industry media resource for fitness professionals.
A new study shows an association between aerobic fitness – fitness of the heart and lungs – and COVID-19 hospitalization risk. People who are in better aerobic shape are less likely to be hospitalized due to COVID-19, according to a new study published by researchers at Henry Ford Health System. This study, published with video and an editorial in the January issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, is one of the first studies to report an association between aerobic fitness – fitness of the heart and lungs – and COVID-19 hospitalization risk. “This is one more reason to take that walk or get on the exercise bike,” said lead researcher and clinical exercise physiologist Clinton Brawner, senior bioscientific medical staff in preventive cardiology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. “It adds to the current understanding that exercise and good fitness levels are related to a lower risk of upper respiratory tract infections like COVID-19 and suggests that people may generally tolerate this infection better if they are more fit.” The systemic inflammatory response to viral infections like COVID-19 has a significant effect on the heart and lungs, 14
or cardiopulmonary system. Aerobic-type exercise training, such as walking or jogging, increases a person’s cardiopulmonary fitness and improves immune function, both of which play an important role in reducing the negative effects associated with respiratory infections, the Henry Ford researchers said. The Henry Ford study looked at more than 18,000 patients who underwent an exercise stress test on a treadmill between January 2016 and Feb. 29, 2020. Of those patients, 1,181 were tested for the COVID-19 virus between Feb. 29, 2020, and May 31, 2020. Two hundred forty-six (21 percent) of those patients tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19; 89 (36 percent) ended up being hospitalized due to COVID-19. The researchers then looked at the difference in aerobic fitness between those COVID-positive patients who were eventually hospitalized and those who were not. They measured fitness levels using metabolic equivalents of task, or METs, the standard measurement of aerobic fitness used during stress tests. One MET is the amount of energy used at seated rest. Walking at 3 miles per hour (mph) equals about 3.5 METs. The researchers found those who were hospitalized had a lower fitness than those who were not hospitalized. In their study, each 1 MET higher peak fitness was associated with a 13 percent lower risk of hospitalization from COVID-19. “The take-home message from our study is higher fitness is related to a lower risk of hospitalization from COVID-19,” said study co-author Jonathan Ehrman, associate program director of Preventive Cardiology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. “Our data suggests that striving to achieve a peak fitness level of at least 7.5 METS –equivalent to slow jogging— might be a good goal for our patients and general population to achieve a lower risk
of hospitalization due to COVID-19.” The current public health recommendation is to exercise and perform at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity exercise per week, or a mix of both. “Unfortunately, low fitness seems to be an enduring risk factor for most patients, similar to hypertension and diabetes,” Ehrman said. “Many people do not move to a higher fitness level during the rest of their lifetime, despite understanding that they have low fitness and the importance of having a higher fitness level. However, if they improve their fitness, there are many studies that show that their health will improve, including lowering their risk of heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes and other chronic diseases. And it’s likely that this benefit from improved fitness now likely includes lessening the risk of complications due to COVID-19.”
High blood pressure, smoking and diabetes have the greatest impact on health in the United States, he added. But the risk factors of lower fitness, lack of regular exercise and obesity likely affect more people than any other modifiable risk factor. Performing regular exercise and physical activity and, if needed, losing weight are really the only ways to improve one’s fitness.

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS A T
T H E
C O L O N N A D E
Randy Nachtigall Environmental Services Director
Friday, Oct. 11, 2019 was an interesting day at Sun Health’s corporate office on The Colonnade campus when a car drove into the building at the Center for Health & Wellbeing. And while there was significant damage to the building, fortunately no one was hurt. It was a good real-world test for The Colonnade’s emergency preparedness plan, something that normally is only put to test during planned drills. Then came 2020 and since mid-March, Sun Health and The Colonnade, have been in non-stop emergency planning, preparation and activities to keep everyone on campus safe during the pandemic. While 2020 has been an unprecedented year, Sun Health and The Colonnade team always have emergency preparedness top of mind. “It is important to have a plan in place so that in the event that we do have some kind of a disaster, besides something like COVID-19, we have a set of procedures to follow and check lists to check off to make sure that we are taking care of our residents and team members in the best way possible,” said Randy Nachtigall, Environmental Services director.
20
Randy, along with his team and his counterparts who oversee Resident Services, Customer Services, Dining and the executive leadership team are all part of the Safety Committee at The Colonnade. The committee is an important part of campus operations and take their roles seriously. “I know that we are ready because we have put together our plan, we have drills and we have done a ‘tabletop exercise’ for all residents,” Randy said. “We have trained our staff to know what to do to match what is the plan.” A table top exercise is essentially a virtual, roll-playing drill where an emergency situation is presented to a group working around a conference room table or in current times, gathered virtually in a Zoom meeting. They then act as if the situation is real and begin responding according to details fond in the emergency preparedness plan. Disaster Planning is not required for an independent living community such as The Colonnade was before the Assisted Living and Memory Support (AL/MS) Center opened in Spring 2019. Such planning and drills mandated by the state for the health care operations. However, we’ve always had plans in place to take care everyone on The Colonnade campus. “We know exactly how we will evacuate the AL/MS Center in the event of a disaster,” Randy added. “And, I think that our residents across the campus overall are satisfied. When I did the tabletop exercise,
I got very positive response from just about everybody. We are continually moving forward and improving our plans and keeping them top of mind.” Updating and carrying out practice exercise are important and critical. “In 2020, Sun Health implemented a new emergency communications platform for team members across the enterprise, and we need to update the plans accordingly,” Randy added. “Also, Sun Health’s Emergency Preparedness Committee realized we did not have consistent information in certain areas across all three campuses, so we changed that, too.” The Colonnade has a campus-specific Emergency Preparedness Plan in place that covers many common scenarios including weather incidents, fires, bomb threats, active shooters, power outages and other utility and technology failures. The nearly 40-page plan includes information for both residents and team members, and the plan is updated regularly. “It has a lot of important information and ‘moving parts,’ any of which we may need to activate at a moment notice at any time of day or night,” Randy said. “One of the positives of the year 2020, is we got to put a lot more of that plan into action than we ever normally would, and I’m proud of how everyone at The Colonnade has reacted and responded. I am proud of our Colonnade family. The Colonnade is a nonprofit Sun Health Life Plan community. It’s part of Sun City Grand, and has more than 320 residents in Independent Living. The campus also offers Assisted Living and Memory Support services open to the public. While life has changed considerably in recent months, our commitment to health and safety hasn’t wavered. We’ve successfully implemented stringent protocols in response to COVID-19 and continue to work with residents and staff to ensure a thriving, healthy lifestyle for all. With your safety in mind, our communities are open and ready to help you start planning for the future. For up-to-date information about the campus, visit SunHealthCommunities.org or call (623) 236-3700.

“WHAT NEW TECHNOLOGY?” time, and what we might want to plan for over the next 5 years or so. Being a bunch of “techies”, you can imagine that we took a very measured, logical approach to our task at hand.
This is a common refrain heard in Sun City Grand when something new is about to happen on our campus. Your tech committee is going to try to prevent ever hearing this comment, as it relates to a major 2021 project!
We don’t want to hear ANYONE say “what new technology?” as our technology platforms completely change around September. Here’s the first article of several to help you understand what is happening, how it affects you and what will change in your life because of it. We think it is all good, but it, like many new things, will take some education and we promise to do that. If you currently don’t use any technology, your life will mostly not change – we aren’t forcing any new “must do” items on you. Well, maybe a new smart CAM card and number, but that shouldn’t be too difficult. And there just might be some new things you’ll want to try. More on that in future articles.
26
SO HOW DID THIS GET STARTED? In January of 2020, the board appointed a group of 12 residents who all have a background in various facets of technology to work at the direction of the Long-Range Planning Committee. Carol White and Tom Binns headed up the effort for our community. We put together a timeline of what was, at that time, an unknown journey into assessing what we have on campus now, what needs were being unmet at this
The first thing we did was to map what we had now – two of our team members spent several months running down all the technology on campus and doing detailed drawings of it so we all knew what we had to start with – to the extent that we could. We then pivoted to the user experience and did interviews with CAM staff, Clubs, and Committees – nearly 60 people with direct connections to our business. We did a SWOT (Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities, Threats) analysis to analyze what we learned from all of them. We then turned to our residents and did an extensive survey which was answered by nearly 1,500 residents. We analyzed what they told us (see the July, 2019 Grand Lifestyles) and added that information to our base of knowledge.
Grand Lifestyles | February 2021 | suncitygrand.com
A CHANGE OF MANAGEMENT, A CHANGE OF DIRECTION
During this time, our new General Manager, David Twiggs, came on board and became very interested in this project as he found our current technology to be less than helpful in trying to run a business, improve the customer experience and make decisions based on statistics common in the industry that we just didn’t have due to the age of our infrastructure and hardware and software products. What we started out thinking would be a series of incremental improvements over time and lastly, finally attacking our current legacy business system, got turned on its head. We were full steam ahead to finding a new business system to run all of Sun City Grand and all the associated applications – an opportunity to come directly into the 21st century quickly. An exciting prospect for our team. But now we had serious, immediate work to do.
THE HUNT WAS ON!
With Mr. Twiggs’ very capable leadership, we began looking at various software solutions from various industries – everything from country clubs, to cities, to hospitality to HOAs. It was difficult because we are such a hybrid of many industries – we have pieces of our operations that look like each of those things. After an extensive search, we agreed on five companies that we would look at more closely. We provided them with our specs, developed from our research, and began talking to them and listening to presentations. By fall, we had narrowed it down to three companies, then finally to one with whom we then did a deeper dive into the details of the system – knowing full well that they could still fail at that point. Mr. Twiggs managed the finances and the vendor; we managed the technology suitability. A perfect marriage. The tech team reconvened to talk about what we learned and
to decide whether we could, in good conscience, recommend to Mr. Twiggs and the Board moving forward. This is a big commitment of money and human resources to make a change of this magnitude and we wanted to be as sure as possible. Every team member got to ask their questions, voice concerns and vote on how to proceed. We were able to deliver a unanimous vote to move ahead. Of course, we knew there would be many more questions, some obstacles and some necessary changes in policies and procedures, but we felt that the technology offered by Global NorthStar was well suited to our needs, flexible and solid in its underlying technical components. Next month we will talk about what happened next and some of the changes that will be happening and what you may expect from this new campus-wide innovation.

GRAND LEARNING GINGERTALKS: THE LITERARY ART OF BOB DYLAN: NOBEL LAUREATE GINGER SWARTZ
Meets 1 time on Tuesday 3/16/2021 2:00 PM–3:30 PM FEE: $10 Since Bob Dylan was awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature, a debate has raged as to whether songwriting, as an art, can be defined as literature. The Swedish Academy declared that Dylan “created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.” The Academy further noted that their choice was warranted partly because Bob Dylan “is the object of a steady stream of secondary literature.” In addition to his long and varied musical history, Dylan has published “Tarantula”, a 1971 collection of his poetry and “Chronicles: Volume One”, his 2004 self-styled memoir. So –is songwriting as an art actually literature? And do Bob Dylan’s songs qualify as great literature? This program will explore the written research focused on these questions and will invite discussion about whether Dylan is qualified as a Nobel laureate. EARLY CHINESE ART HISTORY ALLEN REAMER

Meets 2 times on Tuesday 5/04/2021–5/11/2021 9:00 AM–11:00 AM FEE: $15 The " FIRST 100 DAYS", is a concept that started in America with the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt. He took swift action upon taking office and passed through Congress 15 important bills in his first 100 days. Each president since then has been measured by what they have accomplished in their respective first 100 days. JFK ordered the Bay of Pigs invasion 87 days into his first term. Gerald Ford gave Richard Nixon a full pardon one month after taking office. Ronald Reagan on his first day in office announced the release of the diplomats being held by Iran. Barak Obama got Congress to pass the stimulus package 29 days into his first term. What will our next President accomplish during his first 100 days? How will his first 100 days be perceived by America, and the world? We will meet to discuss his successes and failures and what the future might hold. So if you are interested in politics, this is the class for you.

Do Your House Address Numbers
NEED A TRANSFORMER? Submitted by
Dennis Hanscom C.H.A.P.S. Member
PLEASE NOTE: The first portion of this article was contributed by Bob Richards, former C.H.A.P.S.* member who passed away in 2020. Bob was a valued contributor of C.H.A.P.S.* having served as the chairperson, board member, patroller, and classroom trainer for many years. The first portion of this article is in Bob’s words. I find Bob’s contribution worthy of running again in Lifestyles. Our thanks once again to Bob for his years of dedicated service. I know very little about electricity. With a little practice I can change a light bulb all by myself. So, when the light bulbs went out over my house numbers at the front of my house, I thought all I had to do was replace the two small light bulbs. I did that (twice actually) but still all was dark. I then asked Scott Phillips, SCG maintenance operations manager, for his suggestion. “Bob, you need
to replace the transformer in your attic just above the hatch in your garage. Time and heat has destroyed the original transformer and it needs to be replaced. The transformer will lower the wattage for those smaller light bulbs.” I then bought a $10 transformer at a local hardware store, had my electrician install it (in addition to several other electrical jobs I needed done) and now my address lights are shining once again.
C.H.A.P.S.* two main functions
C.H.A.P.S.* evening patrollers see a number of SCG homes with their house address lights dark. If you are among them and replacing your lights with new bulbs is not working, consider replacing the transformer in the attic above your garage ceiling hatch. An electrician or handyman can do this job. Emergency vehicles and neighbors alike will more easily find your house in the evening and your house will have that little extra illumination that says to everyone that someone is living there.

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT
PHOTO FORMATS EXPLAINED Why are photo files labeled differently; e.g., JPG, HEIF, RAW, Pro RAW, GIF, PNG, etc.? Can you give me a simple answer as to what file format to use for what reason? Mary Kay Dear Mary Kay, The most used file format is JPG: Joint Photographic Experts Group. Developed in 1992 specifically for digital photo storage, it was created for storing large image files in small spaces (very much like ZIP files). However, there is a major drawback to JPG files: while JPG makes the image data file smaller by reducing sections of images to blocks of pixels, (the process called lossy), this compression process causes distortion of the image (sharp lines, crisp edges and colors are blurred and smeared depending on how much you compress the file). Even worse, every time you save the same file, the loss of quality accumulates so the image degrades more with every save. HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) is used by Apple’s iPhone (and soon, also on Android) as a modern replacement for JPEG. HEIF utilizes more advanced compression methods resulting in a 50% smaller file size but higher image quality than JPG. Edits such as rotating, cropping, adding text or overlays to HEIF images, the original image is not altered, so you can easily undo without losing image quality. However, this file type is not yet widely supported by the internet or editing apps so the iPhone 48
and iPad automatically convert your photos to JPEG images when you attach them to an email or share them with a service that doesn’t support HEIF files. It also automatically converts them to JPEG when you import these photos onto a Windows PC. GIF (Graphics Interchange Format), like TIFF, uses a lossless compression so image quality is not lost. GIFs are generally associated with the solid graphics on the internet, not photography, and are limited to 256 colors (8-bit color file) so color distortions occur. GIFs today are largely a novelty and used for low-level animation and short video clips, but GIFs can produce small 8-bit images. However, it is a dated technology now that PNG has been developed. PNG (Portable Network Graphics) supports both 8-bit color like GIF and 24-bit color RGB like JPG. They are “non-lossy files,” i.e., they compress photographic images without degrading image quality. It is an excellent format for transparency images, screen shots and non-lossy, smaller files. However, because they are the biggest of the filetypes (aside from RAW), they are not supported by some older browsers.
There is not a single RAW file format; each digital camera maker has their own version of RAW. The concept behind this format is to capture a larger range of color and to provide minimal in-camera processing. Instead of the camera making photographic decisions, shooting images in Camera RAW allows the photographer to adjust image exposure, shadow and highlights, temperature, white balance, etc. as many times as they wish when editing the image, without damaging the image information in the file. Apple’s Pro RAW (iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max) uses a similar process. After shooting the photo, the photographer uses the editing process to alter how the photo is rendered. The biggest drawback to shooting in the RAW format is the size of the file (about 25 megabytes) which comes out to be 40 photos per gigabyte of phone storage. If you have a smaller capacity iPhone Pro you could easily run out of space. Even with 512 GB of storage you will need to store photos elsewhere, and if you are a prolific photographer and are using iCloud, you will have to increase your storage plan, most likely to 2TB. In summary, if you enjoy

editing your photos, RAW is a perfect way to do so, limiting visible compression, and allowing the photographer more editing control. If you are happy with the HEIF format, it is far superior to JPG. For lossless images, with larger file sizes, use PNG.
