FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS
New Tees for You
Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations
Change is Good The new forward tees on the Granite Falls South Course are important changes for all SCG golfers. Maybe for the first time, players can choose to play a course layout ideally suited to their physical abilities. With these new course layouts, what will change will be your enjoyment of the game of golf. However, we don’t want to promise too much. What about that nasty slice which occasionally put your ball in the desert or those bunker shots that didn’t land on the green? They probably won’t change just because you play from the new tees. The new modifications cannot replace lessons and practice. But we can give you a much better chance for success. Our courses are designed to challenge your golfing skills. We offer fine fairways located in a desert setting, some with sloping areas and many bunkers and lakes, surrounded by a well maintained 10

rough. Not one of these features has been altered by the course’s new tee modifications. So what is the change? You will now have more tee options with 11 layouts of different distances. The tee modifications are designed to allow you to play those same beautiful and challenging courses but from course layouts that are better suited to your evolving physical ability. This close match is important. For example, when you were six or seven years old you wanted to ride a bike. Your folks didn’t buy a racing bike for you because they knew you couldn’t reach the pedals. They gave you a bike with smaller wheels, just right for you. You rode and learned to balance, and you felt like one of the big kids. This smaller bike fit your physical abilities at that time. Now you can understand golf’s ongoing dilemma, which has endured for over a century. “Grow the Game” has become a mantra for the golf industry. To stay relevant, attracting new golfers is right up there with retaining existing players. But golf courses have lacked enough course layouts to accommodate golfers’ widely diverse physical capabilities and evolving golf skills. So the USGA* and ASGCA** along with a few local golf professionals spent time thinking about how to make golf
Grand Lifestyles | February 2022 | suncitygrand.com
appropriate for varying physical abilities. A simple solution emerged. Make golf more inclusive. Create more choices where it starts—at the tee boxes. Add new tee distance options and even a combination of layouts, what we call “combo tees.” Check out the new scorecards for Granite Falls South to see the expanded course layouts.
layout. Pros like Jack Nicklaus and Chris Miles, who are also golf architects, found this relationship can be established by dividing the layout’s total length by a common factor for each layout. Nicklaus proposed a factor of 30 with Miles proposing 28. The resulting calculation identified an optimal driving distance in yards for any course layout.
SCG is embarking on an exciting journey as we move to modify all four golf courses to meet new industry standards. Even nongolfers stand to benefit from the changes as our community evolves to match the times and maintain home values.
In order to apply such a factor for our new South Course, we decided to average those two factors resulting in a factor of 29. We named it the “Hochman Factor” in recognition of all the work that our Director of Golf, Jeff Hochman, has done to make our courses more playable. Simply dividing the number 29 into each of the total yardages for our 11 tee layouts defines the optimal driving distance for each layout. (See Table 1) By applying the Hochman Factor, you can match your average driving distance with the optimal driving distances to determine which course layout/tee color/
Which Tee is Right for You? Each player has to determine the tee distance that suits their game and ability. The accepted method is to start by identifying an average driving distance for each regular and combo course
Grand Lifestyles | February 2022 | suncitygrand.com
distance will provide the best golfing experience for you. Golf is a sport designed to challenge your ability to perform specific golfing skills. The newly-modified South Course will offer an appropriate and realistic challenge for your skills at this unique moment in your life. Your future game scores will probably fall within a range of between birdie to double bogey with the most frequent hole scores at par and bogey. And, you will enjoy the occasional achievement of excellence by meeting and surmounting the difficult challenges the course demands. Successfully meeting these challenges is the true purpose of golf—and it just makes the game more fun. * USGA – United States Golf Association ** ASGCA – American Society of Golf Course Architects Contributed by the Move Forward Team

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER
WHAT DO WE MEAN WHEN WE TALK ABOUT “WELLNESS”?
Allison Adams Fitness Manager
The Oxford dictionary defines it as “the state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal”. The Global Wellness Institute defines wellness as “the active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health”. In other words, wellness is proactive, preventive, and driven by selfresponsibility; an approach focused on prevention, healthy lifestyles, and the pursuit of optimal well-being. (https:// globalwellnessinstitute. org/what-is-wellness).
Sun City Grand supports the concept of wellness as seen in our value statement: “We believe in life-long learning, and a desire for active well-being” How are we supporting wellness in our community? Through a variety of group classes, articles, social events and workshops. At Sun City Grand Fitness, we believe that now, more than any time since childhood, you probably have more time to really focus on your wellness. If you research the topic, you can find a plethora of different wellness topics: financial, spiritual, occupational, physical, to name a few. Although all relevant, we’ve chosen to direct our attention to the following 6 pillars that directly affect your physical health. Strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, cognition, and mindfulness. Strength: A measure of physical exertion against an object Endurance: Capacity to perform physical activity that increases the heart rate above 50% of max heartrate. The ability to sustain a prolonged stressful effort or activity Flexibility: Ability for a joint to move pain-free through a range of motion Balance: Ability to stay in control of body’s position Cognition: The mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and

LRP What / Who is the LRP? What LRP work is going on currently? What's The Impact For Our Community! OVERVIEW
“LRP” stands for Long Range Planning. An LRP advisory committee was officially established by the Board of Directors in 2017 and continues to report to the Board. The LRP committee is the steward of our community’s Long Range Strategic Plan. We are the innovators, researchers, and planners for our community’s future aspirations. We evaluate trends, innovations and opportunities to meet the needs of current and future residents. We propose initiatives to address our community’s livability and vitality.
defined a “roadmap” to guide SCG toward the future. The roadmap included eight key success factors, with related goals and tactics: Attract and Integrate New Residents, External Community, Golf, Landscaping and Structures, Living Life Fully, Space Allocation and Utilization, Technology, and Community Association Staffing.
The Strategic Plan is a roadmap for the future which includes the Master Community Plan that highlights major areas of LRP focus (see MCP graphic). While the LRP committee evaluates and proposes potential plans, the Board is ultimately responsible for all decisions and approving funding.
Over the past 5-6 years, many of the original initiatives were accomplished, some were removed due to infeasibility, and some became major focus points. For example, Golf and Technology were deemed to be so vital to the community that separate advisory committees were established and report directly to the Board - the Golf LRP Advisory committee and the Board Ad Hoc Committee on Technology. The current LRP committee is charged with continuing to evaluate opportunities and enhance our community.
A Brief History In 2016, the forward-looking Board of Directors realized the need to think about the long range opportunities for Sun City Grand - 5 to 10 years in the future - to ensure a healthy, active community with attractive property values. The 2016-2025 Strategic Plan was developed to provide a “big picture” view of the community as it existed then and to visualize what it may look like in 10 years based on forecasted trends in the market and inevitable changes. A team was appointed to define the strategic plan, based on trends and on community research. The original team refined a broad spectrum of community ideas and 16
Current LRP Work The LRP advisory committee has three major areas of work underway - Brand Refresh, Space Allocation/Utilization, and a potential Community Garden - as well as other initiatives in the pipeline. These initiatives are founded on community research, substantial data analysis, and external trend assessment and each initiative supports the Long Range Strategic Plan (see MCP graphic). A brief overview of each follows - including the goals, work underway, and next steps.
Brand Refresh—Reflecting Our Grand Lifestyle! The goal of the LRP’s Brand Refresh work is to retain current residents and attract new buyers to our vibrant community by updating and refreshing Sun City Grand’s brand image and “experience” (delivered through communications, amenities and socialization) to stay competitive with changing and growing competitors in the housing segment. Based on extensive community research (over 2,600 residents completed brand surveys in August 2021) and external trend assessment, Rawle-Murdy, a brand consultant, and the LRP proposed a brand refresh to the Board in November 2021. The proposed brand promise is that we “Live Grand” and our refreshed brand name would be “The Grand” - recognizing the significance of our history while pivoting to a fresh future which will continue to attract new residents. (As part of the rationale for their proposal, Rawle-Murdy showed data that the “Sun City” name hasn’t been used on any new builds anywhere in the country since 2007. For a deeper dive on the Brand Refresh, please see p16-17 of the January Lifestyles.) The Board will make the strategic decisions on the brand proposal. The research and brand proposal has been covered in various Board meetings and community calls in November and December. In the meantime, the LRP advisory committee continues to work on a potential rollout plan.

Space Allocation and Utilization—May We Have a Room Please? The goal of the Space Allocation and Utilization Project is to promote, enhance, and support community socialization via the “highest and best use” of our facilities for both current and future residents. This initiative encompasses the potential for new buildings as well as enhancement and/ or repurposing of current facilities. Socialization includes club activities as well as other events where people gather - everything from sports to social games to artistic endeavors, performing arts, and CAM-sponsored events. To address the wide scope of this goal, the LRP committee began with a detailed, fact-based assessment of current space
usage. We looked at buildings, rooms within the buildings, usage of each room, and types of events or activity. We analyzed usage by time of day, day of week, by season. We began to consider the potential for flexible vs. designated space, the need for technology-enablement, and possible options for creating activity zones, where similar activities could be highlighted. The initial LRP analysis is completed and leads to the need for space and architectural expertise and design considerations. The next step will be for CAM to issue an RFP for the consultation services to develop viable options. The LRP will continue working with all stakeholders to confirm space needs in order to ensure the final recommended remodeling and/or building remodeling project meet those needs.
A Grand Community Garden —It may be in our future! Gardening is a popular hobby practiced by people of all ages and abilities; many retirees look forward to spending more time in their gardens! Community Gardens provide an opportunity for life-long learning, community building, volunteerism, healthy exercise, and growing organic fruits and vegetables to eat and share. So it’s no surprise that Community Gardens are one of the major trends in active adult communities - and could not only benefit homeowners today, but also help Grand remain competitive with other active retirement communities in attracting new buyers. continued on page 18

In June 2021, based on a proposal advocating a new Community Garden amenity, the Board of Directors directed the Long Range Planning committee (LRP) to create a Community Garden subcommittee to assess the viability and potential benefits of a community garden. The subcommittee has been hard at work since Fall of 2021 and is nearing a formal proposal stage. At the February 3 LRP Meeting, the Community Garden subcommittee will present their “Proposal to Advance a Grand Community Garden” for an LRP committee vote. The proposal will include information on the extensive site search and top potential sites, recommended design, materials and water conservation strategies for the garden, along with estimated construction and operating costs. If the LRP approves the proposal, it will be forwarded to the Board of Directors for consideration at their March 10 meeting. At that meeting, the Board
18
would consider whether to affirm their intention to construct a Community Garden and authorize the LRP, Community Garden subcommittee, and CAM to finalize a Garden Project Report for inclusion in the 2023 budget.
Benefits to Our Community The work of the Long Range Plan advisory committee is wide-ranging, but the overall goal is to keep our community strong by enhancing our key assets and adding new ones. Our focus is toward the future; our foundation is data; our operating mode is collaboration.

DO YOUR HOUSE ADDRESS NUMBERS NEED A TRANSFORMER? Submitted by:
Dennis Hanscom C.H.A.P.S. Member
PLEASE NOTE: The first portion of this article was contributed by Bob Richards, former C.H.A.P.S.* member who passed away in 2019. (Bob’s article was published in the February 2019 Lifestyles publication.) Bob was a valued contributor of C.H.A.P.S.* having served as the chairperson, board member, patroller, and classroom trainer for many years. The first portion is in Bob’s words, and I find this article worthy of running again. Our thanks once again to Bob for his dedicated service.
I know very little about electricity. With a little practice I can change a light bulb all by myself. When the light bulbs went out over my house numbers at the front of my house, I thought all I had to do was replace the two small light bulbs. I did that (twice actually) but still all was dark. I then asked Scott Phillips, SCG maintenance operations manager, for his suggestion. “Bob, you need to replace the transformer in your attic just above the hatch in your garage.” “Time and heat had destroyed the original transformer and it needs to be replaced.” “The transformer will lower the wattage for those smaller light bulbs.” I then bought a $10 transformer at a local hardware store, had my electrician install it (in addition to several other electrical jobs I needed done) and now my address lights are shining once again. CHAPS evening patrollers see several SCG homes with their house address lights dark. If you are among them and
replacing your lights with new bulbs is not working, consider replacing the transformer in the attic above your garage ceiling hatch. An electrician or handyman can do this job. Emergency vehicles and neighbors alike will more easily find your house in the evening and your house will have that little extra illumination that says to everyone that someone is living there. C.H.A.P.S.* two main functions: Evening Patrol: where we drive around in teams of two during the evening hours looking for open garage doors and malfunctioning streetlights. Vacation Watch: where we drive around in teams of two checking on vacation homes for unlocked doors and windows. These two functions are explained in more detail in past and future Lifestyles publications. TO VOLUNTEER: We are looking for SCG men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles
and training. Call Danielle Amato (CAM) 623-546-7539 or the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us! DONATIONS: C.H.A.P.S. welcomes all donations. Those wishing to make donations may do so at the Membership Office. Make checks payable to Sun City Grand Community Association and designate “Donation to C.H.A.P.S.”

But a political consultant sees things differently – Ned might be the worst candidate to ever run for office. Unless the public is looking for just that… the worst candidate to ever run for office. Adding to this satire are a professional pollster whose view of politics is a series of contests to be won; the Governor’s executive assistant who has the air of a politician about her; and a TV reporter and cameraman who round out this interesting cast. A timely and hilarious comedy that skewers politics and celebrates democracy. $20/pp | Five Shows: Thursday & Friday | 6pm Cash Bar | 7pm Performance Sonoran Plaza Main Stage Saturday | 12:30pm & 6pm Cash Bar | 1:30pm & 7pm Performance | Sonoran Plaza Main Stage Sunday | 2pm Cash Bar | 3pm Performance Sonoran Plaza Main Stage

CIMARRON NIGHT CLUB PRESENTS JOEY JEWEL Straight From the Biggest Venues in Seattle and beyond, with Tributes to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop and More. First time in the Grand, Joey
Grand Lifestyles | February 2022 | suncitygrand.com
Jewell normally performs on big stages backed up by a full orchestra, but he’ll be in the Phoenix area and we’re lucky to be able to have him on our Nightclub stage. As a solo performer, you won’t be disappointed. This is a swingin' time trip back to the Las Vegas Strip days when Sinatra and the Rat Pack ruled. Joey’s performance is true to the incomparable phrasing and vocal texture of Frank Sinatra and friends. He’s got the energy and excitement to bring wonderfully smooth and sophisticated arrangements. The show is smart, funny, and a wonderful tribute to the lost art of livin' it up. Open Table Seating - first come, first seated. Only dry snacks allowed. Event Coordinator: Didi Nielsen 623-583-4406. Tickets may also be purchased at the SCG Activities Desk (M-F, 8 am - 4 pm). $20/pp | Saturday | 6 p.m. Doors Open/Cash Bar 7 p.m. Performance | Cimarron Center

GRAND SINGERS AND CHORALE— 2022 SPRING CONCERT The 2022 Grand Singers and Chorale Spring Concert is entitled “The Look of Love”, which embodies the spring season as performed by the 130-voice Chorus and 32-voice Chorale under the direction of Pamela Weir. Acknowledging various examples of love “With You”, we praise America’s passion of baseball at the “Ballgame”, complete with a yummy “Oo, Barbeque!”. Via Words and Music by Billy Hill, our spring concert continues, in a Gospel swing, “The Glory of Love”, and Carole King reminds us that “You’ve Got a Friend”. Let’s not forget clandestine love, which might be found in a sleazy dive (where “Hernando’s Hideaway” wasn’t so hidden) and confessed by Disney’s villains in a medley of three songs. In the end, what could be more important than honoring the love of our country by singing a dramatic arrangement of “God Bless America”? “Never My Love” was a popular love song in the 1960’s and one our Grand Singers enjoy singing. The Grand Singers Concerts are Saturday, April 2 at 7 PM, and Sunday, April 3, at 3
PM in the Sonoran Ballroom. Tickets go on sale $15 beginning February 1, 2022, and are available online at www.scgrandmusicclub.com or www.suncitygrand. com or the Activities Desk (open M-F from 8 AM to 4 PM). The Butterfield Overland Trail was a modern marvel in the 1858, being the first transcontinental mail service. Deliver mail across the western United States in both directions, twenty-eight hundred miles each way, every twenty-five days, 365 days a year per the Postmaster General. Cross major deserts with little to no water and scant vegetation for construction, deal with robbers and Indians, withstand 100-plus degree temperatures in the summer and cross mountain passes in the winter, all with the absence of discernable roads, only trails and virtually no towns or village inbetween. We will review the efforts, accomplishments and the fabulous story of John Butterfield, Sr., and his Overland Mail Trail.

During his lifetime, he made over 200 movies and became a world renowned actor. He became known for standing up for oneself and being able to be counted on in a pinch. Everyone has a favorite John Wayne movie because he had many famous lines that are still quoted. Come and see his story and relive some of those movie moments because this is a tribute to an American icon.

What is Physics all about? Why is it so important? It's the branch of science concerned with nature and the properties of matter and energy. The subject matter is different from Chemistry and Biology. It includes mechanics, heat, light, and other forms of radiation. Also electricity, magnetism, and the structure of atoms. So if any of these topics interest you, or if you just want to gain a better understanding of Physics, then this is the class for you.

GRAND DEMOCRATS INTEREST GROUP
FEBRUARY 23, 2022 DEMOCRATIC INTEREST GROUP MEETING Join us at 6:00pm for a social half hour and at 6:30 for our meeting in the Aqua Fria Room in Cimarron. Members and guests are welcome. If, because of COVID, we have to meet via ZOOM, so please check the Grand Dems website at granddems.org closer to February 23rd to get the login to ZOOM. Thank you, we want everyone to be safe! Our speakers will be Sandra Kennedy and Lauren Kuby running for Arizona Corporation Commission. After serving six years in the Arizona House of Representatives and three terms in the Arizona State Senate, Sandra Kennedy was elected to the Arizona Corporation Commission in 2008 on a platform of promoting solar energy in Arizona, and as a fierce consumer advocate. In her first term at the Corporation Commission, she worked with the majority to advance Solar Energy and Energy Efficiency. Sandra is a member of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners. She is the first and only African American in Arizona to hold statewide office and the first statewide elected official, west of the Mississippi. Sandra was re-elected to the Corporation Commission in 2018 on a platform of restoring integrity and transparency to the Commission, lowering unjustified utility rate increases and creating more solar and renewable energy in Arizona, especially roof top solar. Lauren Kuby was elected to the Tempe City Council on a sustainability platform in 2014. In her two terms, she has been recognized as a national champion for climate solutions. Lauren has led Tempe's efforts for social, economic, and environmental justice, including initiatives related to clean energy, climate action plans, and urban forestry. Lauren spearheaded a dark money disclosure amendment to Tempe’s charter,
garnering 91.44% support from the voters. For her efforts exposing the corruptive influence of money in politics, Lauren was featured in the MSNBC docuseries, “American Swamp.”
LET’S MAKE HISTORY
Commissioner Sandra Kennedy and Tempe Councilmember Lauren Kuby are running as a team to join Commissioner Anna Tovar on the AZ Corporation Commission, creating a Democratic majority on the Corporation Commission for the first time in decades. These three powerful women will be strong consumer advocates, corporate watchdogs, and solar champions, leading Arizona to a clean-energy economy.

SOUND & LIGHTING
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO KEEP THE GRAND’S ENTERTAINMENT “BEST IN CLASS” The Sun City Grand Music Club and Drama and Comedy Club justifiably receive accolades for the many fine musical, dramatic and comedy shows that they bring to our stages each year. But it’s true for any live entertainment venue – the shows are only as good as the sound and lighting teams make them. We are currently looking for residents who want to practice their existing skills or learn new ones for the upcoming season starting in the Fall 2021. And the best part is absolutely no prior experience or knowledge is required. We will train anyone who is interested in learning the lighting and sound systems. With the many performances we are planning well into 2022, and the different roles each require, there will be much need for more trained technical people. This is a great way to learn some new skills and become a member of the Grand’s entertainment team. If you have ever wanted to be a part of Live Theater, this is your opportunity. Now that we are returning to a full schedule of performances, the need is even greater for more people to join our lighting and sound teams. For more information, contact Larry Dirksen – 623-363-5040 (Sound); or Bob Nix – 623-214-8280 (Lighting)
