During the winter season it is important that golfers do not overlook the impact that cart traffic will have on dormant turf. When turf is growing, it can recover from stresses like cart traffic. Injury or damage to dormant turf will not recover until temperatures rise in the spring. In a worstcase scenario, damage from traffic on dormant turf will require sod. This work is time consuming and costly to prepare the courses for the upcoming warm weather season. If golfers utilize the 90-degree rule while limiting their traffic in the dormant roughs, we can improve our transition to warm season turf.

Grand Golf would like to see golfers utilize the following best practices:

n Utilize the 90-degree rule to enter the fairway & exit the fairway

n Find the best turf and drive on it… in the winter fairways & cart paths are best

n Avoid the cattle method of driving and enter/exit fairways where turf is not already compacted

n Keep an eye out to avoid all wet or softer turf conditions

n Follow all traffic controls on the golf course including enter/exit signs as well as rope & stake

n If you have a special needs permit, please do your best

to remain 5 yards from all tee boxes & 15 yards from all greens

As golfers, a small amount of our time and attention can go a long way in helping to maintain high-quality playing conditions on the courses we play. Repairing ball marks on the putting greens is an easy way to make a positive impact, but the importance of ball mark repair and the proper tools and technique are often misunderstood. Here are five things every golfer should know about repairing ball marks:

1. The proper technique for ball mark repair is easy and fast. Insert the ball mark repair tool behind the ball mark and gently pull the top of the tool toward the center. Continue working around the ball mark, pulling the surrounding turf in toward the center of the indentation. Avoid using a lifting or twisting motion

because this can damage turf roots. Once you have finished pulling turf in toward the center, gently tamp the area down with your putter to create a smooth, firm surface.

2. Unrepaired ball marks cause lasting problems. Failing to repair a ball mark may seem like a minor oversight, but there are lasting consequences. Unrepaired ball marks can take weeks to heal, during which time they can cause balls to bounce offline. The damage to the putting surface is also an entry point for weeds that can cause serious problems.

3. Certain putting greens are more vulnerable to ball marks than others. Any putting green that typically receives high, lofted approach shots will be more susceptible to ball marks. The putting greens on par-3 holes are a perfect example. If you recognize that a putting green is prone to damage from ball marks, it is important to be mindful of repairing your own ball mark and a few unrepaired ones nearby.

4. Soft conditions mean more ball marks. When putting

greens are wet or soft, ball marks will be more of an issue. This is just one of the reasons why superintendents work hard to promote firm playing conditions with aeration, topdressing and other maintenance practices. If excessive thatch accumulates beneath the putting surface, ball marks and other turf issues will be more problematic.

5. Almost any pointed tool can be used to successfully repair a ball mark. Many different tools have been created to repair ball marks, including singlepronged and fork-shaped tools. Almost any pointed tool, including a golf tee, can be used to effectively repair a ball mark. Using the proper technique is the key to success.

Repairing ball marks is one of the easiest ways that golfers can help superintendents deliver high-quality playing conditions. After hitting a great shot onto the putting green, fixing your ball mark and a couple nearby is an excellent way to celebrate. Thank you.

CARS, BIKES, AND PEDESTRIANS

It’s that time of year again when we see more cars on the streets here in Grand. The posted speed limit is 35mph on Sunrise, Goldwater, Mountainview and Clearview Roads. It is 25 mph on all other streets. The 4-way stop signs mean just that…come to a complete S T O P! Not long ago, a homeowner shared with me that they were cited by the Surprise Police for failing to come to a complete stop, so beware! With the added pedestrian traffic crossing between the Palm Center and the Sonoran Plaza on Remington, please hold down your speed. It is not uncommon to witness cars traveling between 30 to 40 mph in that area. Also, pay attention to the crosswalks.

Sun City Grand offers great walking /bike riding trails. Suggestion from this regular bike rider, bike riders call out “bike passing” when approaching

walkers. Walkers, please raise an arm when a rider calls out “bike passing” to acknowledge the passing riders. Courtesy to each other goes a long way when sharing these great trails.

I didn’t mean to get sidetracked, but cars, bikes and pedestrian safety cannot be overemphasized.

VOLUNTEER

And now a word or two about our C.H.A.P.S.* volunteer group. We serve two main functions. We patrol in the

evening, checking for open garage doors, malfunctioning street lights and any suspicious activity. In the early morning, we provide a service known as Vacation Watch. Through Vacation Watch, we check on homes that have been vacated in the summer or any other vacation period lasting at least two weeks or more. Forms to have your home “watched” may be picked up at the Palm Center. We perform a visual check for unlocked windows and doors. This service is provided free of charge, but we do welcome donations.

WE NEED YOU!

We are actively looking for new volunteers. All residents are welcome. We will provide classroom and field training. There are two-person patrols where you select your days/ evenings to volunteer and you select how many times each month you wish to volunteer.

Showcase of Toys—A New View

The Grand Woodcrafters Club held it’s annual “Showcase of Toys” on December 1st this year at 7 PM in the Kiva Ballroom (Sonoran Plaza). We had great attendance for our show.

There were many new and intricate toys made, and of course, some of our traditional favorites. 1040 toys were produced this year. By the end of the next day, all toys were delivered to the following six charities:

➤ Charter School of Phoenix

➤ Eves Place (a shelter for victims of abuse)

➤ Faith House (New Leaf) (shelter for women in crises)

➤ Luke AFB (Operation Angel Tree)

➤ St. Mary’s Food Bank

➤ St. Vincent de Paul (Dream Center).

This year, we tried something different for our toy presentation. Instead of viewing the toys from a shop cart and holding them up, we had two cameras trained on a table upfront and the toys could be viewed on the 3 large overhead projector screens.

It was a big success and will be used for next years show.

We host the “Showcase of Toys” to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our toymakers. They meet at the woodshop Thursday nights between 6-8, many of them year-round. Quite a few toy makers contribute their own money into building toys, some producing them at home. Also, we host this event to recognize the talents of our other Sun City Grand Clubs who participate in this effort. They include the Art Club who paint individual designs on many of the toys, Community Service of the Stitchers Club who

make clothes, bedding and other items, the Beaders who make bracelets that are placed in every jewelry box, and the Paper Arts & Memories Club who made hundreds of generic Christmas cards for the kids. Finally, we want to show our community the ways that Sun City Grand gives back to our greater community.

Our Toy Project operates on a donation basis only! If you would like to contribute, please stop by the woodshop and drop your contribution off in our donation box, located near the front door. Thank you!!!

The July Lifestyles contained an article titled Getting To Know You, where I reviewed ideas our Board Members submitted to support inclusiveness and community spirit.

The event we have agreed to needs ALL OF US. We are joining the Valley View Community Food Bank (VVCFB) for the SUPER BOWL FOOD DRIVE. It will bring our community together to support those in need. They could be our fellow residents of Grand or neighbors living just outside our community.

The VVCFB manages food pantries in Sun City, Sun City West, El Mirage, and Youngtown. With rising food prices, food banks everywhere are seeing an increasing number of clients. VVCFB is no exception. What sets this food bank apart from others is that they never say “no” to a person in need, regardless of where that person may live, while other food bank pantries have zip code restrictions.

In 2021, over 700,000 West Valley clients were served by VVCFB, and seniors were 300,000 of the total. In the past four months (August-November), the number of senior visits approached 270,000 (including residents of Grand). These are our neighbors, the people we may sit next to at our places of worship, or meet in social gatherings. VVCFB also delivers food to more than 250 homebound Seniors.

Why Super Bowl week? Following the holidays, giving (donations) becomes less even as the need stays the same and may even grow. We can help bridge that gap for those in need. VVCFB packs each food box when the client arrives and prides itself on meeting the needs of that client and their family including the size of the family and any dietary needs one or more members of that family may have. Please begin planning now to support this important organization. Every time

Super Bowl FOOD DRIVE 2023

Most needed items include proteins (canned meat or fish, peanut butter, legumes), stews, hearty soups, and canned vegetables and fruit. VVCFB also gets requests for infant food, hygiene products, sanitary supplies, and packaged meals.

VVCFB has a top rating with Network for Good. VVCFB’s federal tax number is 77-0696933. Donations can be included in your charity contributions. Even if you don’t itemize, you may deduct up to $600 per couple on your Federal return.

For those who are Arizona Residents, you may take advantage of a State of Arizona tax program enabling you to deduct up to $400 per resident from your state income tax for contributions to a Qualified Charity

Donations may be dropped off beginning Monday February 6th. Donation barrels will be placed at entrances to Adobe, Chaparral, Cimarron, and Sonoran facilities. Food Bank volunteers will pick up donations daily and a new barrel will be placed.

On Super Bowl Sunday (February 12th), from 10AM till 1PM, Volunteers will be manning drop off locations at the Cimarron Center and the Remington entrance to the Sonoran Plaza. We want to make it as easy as possible for everyone to contribute.

our ‘forever home’ and The Grand is our community. Even though I was thoroughly enjoying my retirement, I had a sense that I could do more with the skills and knowledge developed during my working years in the medical device industry. Researchers who study the stages of retirement would say that I left the ‘honeymoon phase’ and entered ‘reorientation phase’. It was time to give back, but how?

Well, in 2011 we purchased a house in Surprise with a bar by the front door, and two years ago I began serving on the HOA Board. Sometimes life has a way of changing the ‘never’ into ‘why not’.

Like many new retirees, it was a time to explore new things that I did not have time to do when I was working. I realized that I was given the precious gift of time to do whatever I wanted to do and that I should take full advantage of it. During my first five years in Grand I tried new things like golfing, lawn bowling, paper arts, glass arts, fiber arts, jewelry making, cooking classes and attended Grand Learning classes. Friendships developed based on common interests, ability to embrace change and gratitude for the blessings we experience each day.

My husband Mike and I became full time residents in the spring of 2016. We are in

Volunteering was my answer. I began working at a walk-in center for women who are victims of sex trafficking. I focused on educating others on how to prevent children from getting lured into this nightmare. In Grand, I served on the Grand Glass Arts Board, Chartered Club Peer Group Council, Space Allocation committee and the Village Center remodel. These positions gave me the opportunity to use my skills, knowledge, and time in support of our community. In return, I learned how our community functions and was given the chance to work with some really terrific residents. Giving back is a way to show appreciation. Having a purpose is fulfilling.

Serving on the Grand Board was a big step for me. With the encouragement from family and friends, I sought and was accepted to fulfill a one-year vacated position on the Board. I wasn’t sure what I was getting into. It seemed that I was learning something new every day.

I can honestly say that I enjoyed the challenge so

much that I ran and was elected to serve for a twoyear term. My fellow Board members have a serving heart, and it is truly an honor to share in our community’s governance. Being a Board Liaison gives you an opportunity to work with our talented residents and staff. Some have asked about the amount of time it takes to serve on the Board. The answer is ‘it depends’. For me, serving as the Board Vice President, the demand on my time is quite manageable. There are times of the year when additional focus is required. The budgeting cycle is a good

example because the Board is responsible for the fiduciary health of the community. There is a lot of information to consider when making these financial decisions.

January begins the election cycle for positions on the Grand Board and committees. Perhaps you are finding that your retirement ‘honeymoon’ is coming to an end. If you are looking for something to do with purpose, please consider volunteering for one of these important positions. If like me you’ve said ‘I’ll never run for the Board’, just remember to never say never. You just might surprise yourself!

Entertaining Our Residents

Adding music to the repertoire of activities in The Colonnade’s Assisted Living and Memory Support programs is music to the ears of residents and their family members. In December, they were treated to the melodic sounds of the Pirazzi String

Quartet, featuring members of the Phoenix Symphony. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the music, with some singing along, clapping, and tapping their feet.

favorite holiday tunes thanks to underwriting from Sun Health Foundation. Studies have shown that music not only helps people feel happier; there are actual therapeutic benefits for those experiencing health conditions including memory loss. In addition to playing beautiful music, the musicians shared fun facts about themselves, their instruments, and how the classic songs we love originated, including that White Christmas was written in Phoenix by the pool at The Biltmore. The quartet particularly enjoys playing to audiences with cognitive issues. “Sun Health Foundation is exceptionally proud to have brought these performances to our Sun Health Community

campuses as well as to inpatients in the SAGE behavioral health unit at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center, says Gina W. ETERNITY is a comedic play written by author Michael Cochran.

Synopsis: Abe, sick of sticking to a sensible diet, decides to move a client appointment to later in the day in favor of getting an ice cream sandwich. The only problem is that Abe is an angel of death, and his “appointments” are to greet the newly deceased and take them to the next stop. Things quickly spiral out of control when Abe’s repeated attempts to “bump off” his delayed appointment fails, and the real threat of a new “unauthorized life” will occur unless Abe gets everything back on track. Meanwhile, he eventually rediscovers what the real meaning of life and death is all about.

All aboard for a trip down memory lane with steam engines from the days of yesteryear. Our adventure includes traveling on the Cumbres Toltec Scenic Railroad from Antonio, Colorado to Chama, New Mexico. We begin in the open prairies and rolling hills; many switchbacks eventually making our climb into the forested foothills with even more switchbacks. Near the summit we pass through the Toltec Tunnel before descending back through the foothills to the town of Chama at about. The second trip is on the Durango Silverton Railroad in Colorado. This is a roundtrip adventure beginning in Durango. We travel along the farmland valley of the winding Animas River. Eventually we climb into the forested San Juan Mountains still following the Animas River in a narrow valley culminating in the historic mining town of Silverton where we'll board our train for the return trip. The show ends with a special really narrow-gauge railroad surprise.

The Epic of Gilgamesh originated in Mesopotamia - the Cradle of Civilization (present day Iraq) - approximately 2200 BCE. However, unlike the epics of Homer, Gilgamesh was lost in time, trapped in wedge-shaped writing on clay tablets awaiting translation. Eventually 19th Century archaeologists arrived, and each season's dig offered more to read and to learn, until one day the translator George Smith, while reading in the British Museum, was so overcome that he raced around the room and threw off his clothes :). What was appearing before Smith's eyes was the story of the Flood, only this time the ark belonged to a man named Ut-napishtim. Our class will begin by laying some groundwork regarding the Mesopotamian civilization, and then we will discuss the Epic of Gilgamesh, where Ut-napishtim's story appears.

From the late 1800's to World War II, Paris was the center of western art. Artists from Europe and the Americas came to study and grow as artists. They produced a variety of chronologically overlapping art styles. Some styles lasted a few years, others, many years. Some styles were practiced by a few artists, some by many artists. Artists usually practiced more than one style in their working career. They produced styles that changed all aspects of art: composition, color theory, paint application, representation of objects, etc. In this lecture we will look at one style, Cubism, and some of the artists that practiced this style. You will discover how it came about, the artists that started this style, how the style changed over time, and some of the other artists that practiced this style. Some of the art work will be discussed in detail.

It is about a document which has stood the test of time and conflict. It makes us who we are as a nation. It defines American culture. Our first session addresses events from the first settlement of Europeans on our eastern seaboard, through our War for Independence, to the making of the Constitution. The second session addresses the Bill of Rights and ratification of the other amendments. Our third and final session examines some landmark decisions of the Supreme Court (personal choices of mine). My hope is that this little narrative nugget will capture the attention of those truly interested in this historic document.

Fran Kosik worked for the Indian Health Service at Tuba City, Arizona and spent thirty years learning about the culture, geology, geography, history, and archaeology of the Hopi and Navajo nations. Her book, Native Roads, A Complete Motoring Guide to the Navajo and Hopi Nations, has been a top seller since 1995. In 2013, historian Jim Turner took a ten-day trip around the area update a third edition. This presentation contains many beautiful photographs of the areas covered in the original edition, as well as many new ones. After seeing this program, newcomers can hardly wait to go, and old timers relive fond memories and feel the call to return.

When the US Army ordered troops into Arizona Territory in the 19th century to protect and defend newly established settlements, military men often brought their wives and families, particularly officers who might be stationed in the west for years. Most of the women were from refined, eastern-bred families with little knowledge of the territory. Their letters, diaries, and journals from their years on army posts reveal untold hardships and challenges. They learned to cope with the sparseness, the heat, sickness, and danger, including wildlife they never imagined. These women were bold, brave, and compassionate. They became an integral part of military posts that peppered the West and played an important role in civilizing the untamed frontier. Combined with research tracing their movements from post to post, their personal stories personify the tragedies and triumphs many early military wives endured.

They think of civil rights and how the court cases of that decade had effects across the cultural spectrum. Movies came out that dominated the times. The dominant political figure was President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the winning general of D-Day during World War II. The world was struggling with conflicting political agendas and students were taught to hide under their desks in case an atomic bomb went off. Two decades later a Television show came out called Happy Days and that show defined how people viewed the 1950s. It was a simpler time and even a good time. Come and relive those days and see how the major events of that time still have an effect on us today.

BOOMERS CLUB

The Grand Boomers are a fun-loving, young at heart, social club open to The Grand residents of any age. Our primary goal is to have a great time and meet other people living in our beautiful and active community. Our membership has a total of over 600 residents and continues to grow. Classes Begin

With the new year, our emphasis is on education. Mitchell Weisberg is conducting bridge classes for beginners and those wishing to refresh their game, starting Wednesday January 11 and continuing for the next five consecutive Wednesdays from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. in the Apache Room of the Chapparal Center. The 6-week course includes an instruction booklet and is

CLAY ARTS (GCA)

Welcome to the Grand Clay Arts Club. The purpose of our Club is to provide and support Club Members in the entire spectrum of the clay art form, including but not limited wheel thrown clay pottery, hand built clay art, sculpturing, and all the associated finishing techniques. The Club will promote all clay art forms to the general public, including sales. The Club provides many educational activities including numerous classes taught by our members. We have one of the few Alternate Firing opportunities available in the western suburbs. There are also social activities during the year for our members to enjoy.

DANCE CLUB NEWS

DANCE CLUB LESSONS

The Sun City Grand Dance Club hosts lessons and dances that promote fitness, mind-body connections, and social interactions for a myriad of ages and physical abilities.  Ballroom is the place for an hour of movement and education that suits most couples.  Line dance provides one or two hours of non-stop contemporary dance for the dancer without a partner.  Each week of instruction includes fun and inclusion with fellow dancers.  The latest information is posted on the Dance Club website:  www. scgdanceclub.org.

BALLROOM LESSONS

LINE DANCE LESSONS

Line Dance Lessons go year-round with Brenda Thomason at Cimarron Center.  Starting in January and through March , the Wednesday lessons are from 9 a.m. to noon, but will be held in the Agua Fria room at Cimarron Center. {omit from here: For the remainder of 2022, lessons are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. To here}  The cost is $5 per person.

In addition to twice-weekly lessons, Line Dance also holds a Line Dance Social. The Socials are from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Cimarron Center.

Tickets are $6 per person and may be purchased at the door.  Everyone is welcome, but no lessons are given at the social.  If you can’t get enough dancing, join this friendly group of dancers for a lively evening of beginners through intermediate line dancing.

The Drama & Comedy Club presents theater entertainment to the community, performing plays and musicals on the Sagebrush Stage and comedy skits at the Cimarron Nightclub. FISHING CLUB

The Grand Fishing Club is dedicated to promoting both spin fishing and fly fishing. Club members take an active role not only in the promotion of fishing, but environmental sustainability as well.

Many club members have years of fishing experience and have fished all over the United States, in Canada and other parts of the world. The club sponsors single day fishing trips locally to Lake Pleasant, Deadhorse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, Bartlett Lake east of Cave Creek and the Salt River. Multiday trips include the White Mountains, Lees Ferry near Flagstaff, the San Juan River in New Mexico near Farmington, Alaska and Canada. In Grand, the club helps support the viability of Lake Nine adjacent to the 9th Hole on the Desert Springs Golf Course as a fishery for all Grand residents and their families. The Grand Fishing Club meets the first Tuesday of the month from October through

April. Coupled with the various club fishing trips, members are also committed to making our community a much better place in which to live. Volunteer opportunities include Project Healing Waters in support of disabled veterans, the Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge program, the City of Surprise Adaptive Fishing program and the Phoenix VA Rehabilitation Hospital. In addition, we provide equipment and guidance to Grand residents to take their grandchildren fishing at Lake Nine. GARDEN CLUB

Did you know the City of Surprise has a Xeriscape Garden?  Our Garden Club January 19 meeting will be in the City of Surprise Community Room with a presentation on the Principles of Xeriscape Gardening, presented by Amanda Rothermal, Water Resource Analyst for the City of Surprise.  We will also tour their one acre garden, to learn more about responsible and sustainable water use when creating a beautiful arid landscape.  The meeting will be from 9 AM to 11 AM on January 19, starting in the City Hall Community Room.  Directions will be emailed to members, others may email SCGGardenClub@ gmail.com to make a reservation and receive directions. Carpooling is encouraged.   It’s time to renew your membership in January.  We have a special event scheduled

GOLF—150 GOLF CLUB

Par–3 golf at Sun City Grand. The co–ed 150 Golf Club plays nine holes from tees 150 yards or less from the pin Sunday afternoon. GOLF—LADIES GRAND NINERS

The Ladies Grand Niners has approximately 300 members. We prefer to play nine holes of golf rather than the traditional 18.  Desert Springs is our home course, though we also play Cimarron, Granite Falls North and Granite Falls South during our season. We play by USGA Rules and expect our members to have a general knowledge of the Rules of Golf and some golf experience. Our motto is “Fun, Friendship, and Golf”!

The Ladies Grand Niners membership year is October 1st to September 30th.  We play golf in alternating shotgun or tee time formats on Tuesdays, November through May. Members sign up to play shotguns at either 12:30 or 3:00 or tee times between 12:00 and 3:00. In the summer months, members can choose to play nine holes of golf between 6-7AM or 18 holes at 7 AM.

Members are required to have an active membership in the Arizona Golf Association (AGA) and be a resident of Sun City Grand with a valid Community Association Member (CAM) number. Members are required to have a GHIN handicap index. If you do not have a GHIN handicap index, you must establish one. A 9-hole handicap index is also required to be eligible for prizes in any of our monthly Play-of-the-Day events and for our annual President’s Cup Tournament. An 18-hole World Handicap System (WHS) GHIN Handicap Index is established by playing six 9-hole rounds or a combination of 9- and 18-hole rounds to equal 54 holes. The 18-hole handicap index is converted to a 9-hole handicap index for our league.

A member must play with the Ladies Grand Niners a minimum of five 9-hole rounds to be eligible to play in the annual President’s Cup tournament (held in March each year).

GOLF—MENS 9 HOLE GOLF CLUB

The Men’s Nine Hole Golf Club is comprised of fun loving, supportive golfers of all skill levels who enjoy the game of golf. If you love the game, but 18 holes is too much, this club is for you. We offer you alternating week guaranteed

shotgun starts on Mondays at 12:30 or 3:00 (your choice), and alternating week tee times from 12:00 and 2:00. Free range balls, once-a-month team games e.g. Scramble, etc.

Also, periodic free golfing clinics with our resident golf pro, prize tournaments, and annual free hot dog/chili day.

GOLF—LADIES 18 HOLE LEAGUE

If you enjoy golfing and socializing with other friendly women, then the Grand Ladies 18Hole Golf Association (GLGA) is a perfect fit for you. We are affiliated with the Arizona Golf Association (AGA) and members are required to comply with USGA rules of golf. We play every Tuesday, rotating among the four SCG golf courses.

GLGA is a year-round league with a schedule of shotgun or tee time starts. You can play GLGA only in the winter if you are not here in the summer. We have the opportunity to choose from multiple tee box combinations. You must have a current handicap or establish a handicap within 30 days of joining the league in order to compete in weekly (Tuesday) events. The maximum handicap allowed is 40. In addition to our weekly events, several major tournaments are held throughout the year including a Member-Member, Member-Guest, and League Championship.

The league also supports a variety of charitable activities. Our President is Nancy Foy. The Sun City Grand Lady Putters Charter Club is a social group whose main purpose is getting together for laughs, prizes and friendship while putting and enjoying the outdoors.

We meet five (5) days a week, Monday thru Friday, at the Cimarron 18 hole putting green at the Cimarron Center. Pick out the day that suits you the best! We check in at 9am and begin putting at 9:30am.

Our group is intended for every level of putter. Be our guest, putt for free and come check us out!

GOLF—MEN PUTTERS

HAVE

18-hole putting green located just west of the Cimarron club house, right off of W. Clearview Blvd. You are invited to play a “guest” round with a Men Putters club member.

PUTTING SCHEDULE

The Men Putters do “their thing” weekly on Tuesday and Wednesday at 1:00 PM, on both days, starting in November. Members feel free to pick whatever day they prefer to participate and some even putt both days.

HERE IS A TYPICAL DAILY EVENT

Register to play, be paired with another person, putt 18 holes, and lastly, participate in a 19th hole challenge (this is a special one-hole challenge). Other change-of-pace fun putting challenges are offered throughout the year long program.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

There are some occasional social activities when members meet to vote on new officers OR just meet for club sponsored soda and hot dogs.

VOLUNTEERS

Member volunteers run the club’s daily putting activities such as setting up the course, registering members and guests, etc.

If you are a golfer, the club is a great way to sharpen your putting skills. If you don’t golf, or no longer golf, the club offers an opportunity to enjoy one of the best parts of the sport in a friendly, yet competitive manner. All skill levels are welcome. To equalize performance results and the receipt of monetary awards, individual handicaps are recalculated weekly. The new season starts on November 1. Enjoy competition and have fun.   Test your golf skills and make new friends while enjoying a round of golf on our beautiful community golf courses. The SCG Men’s 18 - Hole Golf Club welcomes resident golfers to join our club and compete for bragging rights and prize money in weekly tournaments. We play our tournaments on Wednesdays under USGA Rules of Golf and use the USGA’s Golf Handicap Information Network (GHIN) for tracking handicaps. Participants are flighted based on handicap and generally play with other golfers of similar ability. Our season starts the first week of November and runs through September. GRAND HIKERS

Grand Hikers welcomes current members along with any hikers interested in learning more about the club to attend the regular membership meeting scheduled for Monday, January 2 at 3 p.m. in the Agua Fria room.  Grand Hikers tries to offer at least five hikes each week with varying levels of difficulty.  Procedures for participating in hikes remain the same including: 1) hikers are required to register in advance for hikes, 2) there is no limit on the number of hikers unless required by the hiking venue or the hike leader, and 3) the Grand Hikers waiver is still required.  Only current club members can access the hike list on the website, all other must contact hikedirector@scghikers.org in order to sign up for a hike. New and prospective club members are encouraged to participate in an Introductory Hike before signing up for a regular club hike. The introductory hike for January is scheduled for the 4th and to sign up contact hikedirector@scghikers.org.

LANGUAGE CLUB

The SCG Language Club would like to increase its foreign language offerings to our residents. We currently offer Spanish, French, Italian, German, and ASL (American Sign Language). We need volunteers in any other languages, to teach our resident students. We would also like to start ZOOMING CLASSES and need volunteers to ZOOM. We welcome all levels and ages to join us for a relaxed but competitive game. The Sun City Grand Music Club is composed of residents who share a love of music. NEXT PET CLUB MEETING

Will be held on Friday, January 20th at 10:00 in the Palms/Mesquite rooms in the Sonoran Plaza.  Our speaker will be Doctor Daniel Moezzi, founder of the new Urgent Petcare facility in Surprise.  He will inform us of the extended hours on weekdays and on weekends when other vets may not be available.   He will also answer your questions regarding emergency and nonemergency situations with your pets.  Hope to see you there.

GRAND PICKLEBALL CLUB

The Grand Pickleball Club is a great place to meet other fun-loving active residents, and get a great workout!  There are 22 pickleball courts located at the Cimarron Center.  The club offers introductory lessons and has ongoing group lessons, clinics and ball-machine drills all designed to help you learn pickleball skills.   Check out the club website at www. grandpickleball.org.  The website is updated regularly and includes information about how to join, daily activities and how to reserve a court.  Any Sun City Grand resident can make court reservations at any time that is not set aside for club functions. THE SCG Pinochle is Welcoming new members to play Pinochle on Tuesday and Friday starting at 6 PM and ending by 8:30 PM. All skill levels are welcomed and we will train any new members interested in playing. On Tuesday we play single deck Pinochle and on Friday we play doubledeck Pinochle. We are a fun-loving group that enjoys tournament playing for those interested and a year-end banquet.

CHESS:

Tucked away in Sun City Grand, three times a week, we play Chess and forget about everything else. It’s true, while playing Chess with us, you think only of Chess, an inexpensive (no membership fees) and calorie-burning activity (yes, it’s true, you burn lots of calories playing Chess).

You’ll need to know the basics as we won’t be spending too much time teaching, but we are welcoming and friendly to everyone, even if you aren’t Bobby Fischer!

So, check us out, Mate. Just show up, with or without a board and pieces, and be ready for a rewarding escape. We usually meet in the Agua Fria room (Cimarron) at 11:30 -3:30 Monday and Wednesday and the Sago Room at the Palm Center on Friday. CRIBBAGE:

We play in the Pima Room at Chaparral Center on Tuesdays from 9:00- 11:30 a.m. We start promptly, so please come at least 15 minutes early to sign up and get acquainted. FIBER, FABRIC & BEADS

We Weave and Spin, do all types of Needlework, General Sewing, Machine Embroidery, Beading, Quilting - and donate our time to help with Community Service. We have a knitting machine, embroidery machines, sergers, looms, sewing machines and a longarm machine. Stitchers meet Monday through Saturday 9AM - 3PM. Dues are $30 a year. Each day is dedicated to one of the fiber arts Special Interest Groups. Come by the Palm Center, Grand Stichers Room, see what we create, and find out how easy it is to get certified on one of our machines or looms.

SEWING AND MACHINE EMBROIDERY

Sewing: Already know how to sew? Great! Come join our classes where qualified instructors take you every step of the way. Want to learn? We can teach you the basics and a little bit more. Machine Embroidery: Learn how to embroider on towels and placemats, make stand up decorations for the holidays, spiffy up your pant legs and more!! We start you at the beginning and help you through any and all projects. Experi-enced members are more than willing to offer assistance. Come join the world of machine embroidery.

TUESDAYS: NEEDLEWORK

Needlework means hand sewing like crochet, knitting, felting and hand appliqué. We offer classes on all of these techniques, plus we have a knitting machine you can get certified on. Imagine knitting a sweater in hours not days! Needleworks, as part of Community Service also helps out Eve’s Place on the Navajo Reservation knitting and crocheting hats and scarves. Another

activity is dedicated to Knitted Knockers. A soft knitted prosthesis for breast cancer patients, all at no cost to recipient.

WEDNESDAYS:

QUILTING

We are a group of Quilter who like to cut up material and put it back together in various creative designs. If you know how to piece/quilt, do come join us on any Wednesday. We have a variety of teachers from nationally recognized members to those who would like to pass along their tips, tricks, and techniques. If you don’t know how to piece/ quilt, we have classes for that. Meetings are on the second Wednesday of each month. Caring Quilts are on the third Wednesday of each month. Caring Quilts are made by many members, washed, and prepped for breast cancer surgery patients. We also make Quilts of Valor and Quilts for Organ Donors. There’s always room for finishing those UFOs among fellow members.

Fiber is spun into yarn using spindles and traditional and electric spinning wheels. We utilize many types of looms on which we create fabric for household items, clothing and art pieces. GRAND GECKOS

Our own masters swim team right here in Grand! We believe in staying fit and building friendships while having fun. Our workouts are fresh, full of variety and will help you get and stay in shape. While you should be able to swim freestyle for at least 10 lengths, you don’t need to know the other strokes to join us at practice. If you are willing to learn, we are there to provide coaching and camaraderie. Our practices have organized sets that are geared from beginner-level swimmers to advanced swimmers and competitors. Most/many of you have played horseshoes at picnics, family reunions, etc. With your renting or

owning a home in our community, you have the opportunity to play this fun game, whenever you want, for free. The horseshoe pits (5 of them) are always open. You can even play under the lights!! Additionally, there is a horseshoe group/league that plays every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday each week. Generally, at 8 am. This time is adjusted during the year for warmer/cooler temps in summer/winter. We also have league play with 5 other retirement communities in late winter through early spring. We will provide horseshoes for you to use as well as assistance on “pitching” horseshoes if you might need/want. We can also assist in helping you order your own horseshoes when you find out how much fun the game really is. Open to all ladies and men.

GRAND REPUBLICANS INTEREST GROUP

Our Veterans Day bar-b-que at the Grand pavilion was a great success. Guest speaker General “Mick” McGuire brought a powerful message and then held a lengthy question and answer session. Veterans were honored and all were inspired and encouraged. (And the food was good!)

On Saturday morning, December 17, we gathered at Church on the Green in Sun City West to hear another powerful speaker, Mr. Shane Krauser. Krauser is aptly billed as “arguably the best, most dynamic speaker and educator on liberty and the U.S. Constitution.”

Beginning in January, Grand Republicans will hold their monthly meetings in the Hopi and Pima rooms here in the Chaparral building. Meetings are on the 3rd Saturday each month. Doors open at 8:30, coffee and pastries available by 9:00, with the meeting starting at 9:30. Guests are always welcome. There is a $2 charge for non-members. We plan to meet each month throughout 2023 and 2024.

Our speaker on January 17 is Dr. Larry Schweikart. A retired professor of History, Dr. Schweikart was born in Mesa, AZ to a cattle ranching family. He earned a B.A. in Political Science and an M.S. in History from Arizona State University; and in 1983 received a Ph.D. in History from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is the author of many popular books, including “A Patriot’s History of the United States” and “48 Liberal Lies about American History (That You Probably Learned in School.)”

We are working on great programs for 2023, with special speakers and events. Please watch the website, grandrepublicans.com, for information as it rolls out. At press time, our program for our February 18 General Meeting is unconfirmed.

For the March 18 meeting we have retired Air Force Colonel Stephen Chealander, known most notably for his role as Military Aide to President Ronald Reagan. In this role, he carried “the Football,” worked as the Presidential Emergency Actions Officer, and served as ceremonial aide and personal aide to the President when required. He held this position through the end of the Reagan Administration. He has many wonderful “Reagan stories” that he likes to share.

Colonel Chealander later moved to Williams Air Force Base, Arizona, as an F-5 Fighter Squadron Commander and transferred in 1989 to Luke Air Force Base as an F16 Fighter Squadron Commander. He was named the Assistant Deputy Commander of Operations for the F16 Tactical Fighter Wing in 1990. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1991.

We are fortunate to have many talented residents who volunteer their time and talents to The Grand Drama & Comedy Club and the Music Club, providing quality theater and musical events throughout the year to our community.

The two clubs share our volunteer sound and lighting teams. We are seeking persons who may have an interest in sharing their talents or learn new skills involving these areas. No prior experience or knowledge of sound or lighting equipment is required. We have volunteers who will train anyone who is interested. Many hands make light work. No pun intended – it is light work! And sound work! But many persons sharing makes easier work.

Description: The group conducts tastings of wines from countries of the world. Each tasting begins with an introductory educational preview

of the topic, followed by the wine tasting done in an informal atmosphere. Light foods and finger desserts are available. Members have the opportunity to learn about wine and find new varietals to enjoy and also meet and befriend fellow wine enthusiasts.

WHAT IS "RECORD SCREEN"?

Dear Cappie,

My neighbor was so excited to tell me how he discovered and uses the “Record Screen” option in the iPhone Control Panel, but I just don’t understand. Can you explain what it is, how it works, and why would anyone ever want to record their screen???

The “Record Screen” feature is like a screenshot, but instead it will allow you to make a video of every image, swipe, tap, and sound on your screen for as long as the recording runs. It’s a very useful tool because it gives you the ability to record whatever is being displayed on your screen as well as the sound of your own voice. There is a plethora of reasons why you might want to record your screen:

n Create step by step video tutorials to teach others, for example, how to use a new app, demonstrate photo editing tools, etc.

n If you are an avid gamer, you can capture and share gaming sequences with just a few taps

n Save your favorite Social Media clips from Facebook (where there is no option to download them), YouTube, Instagram, etc.

n Record an iPhoto slideshow with music (instead of using the Memories option)

n Demonstrate to tech help the technical errors you are experiencing when verbally it is difficult to understand or follow

These are just a few reasons why this option is so popular, but to use it you must add it to your iPhone’s Control

Panel if it is not already there: Go to Settings>Control Center>scroll down to More Controls>Screen

Recording icon >tap the green plus icon on the left. Once it is in your Control Center, you open the Control Center by swiping down and tap on the grey screen recording icon which will count down 3, 2, 1, and then it will turn red and start recording your screen. To stop recording, tap the red bar that sits at the top of the screen during your recording. It will ask if you want to stop recording; select yes, and the video of the recording will be saved to your Photos app.

From there you can easily trim the start and end of the video by clicking on edit and then use your finger to press down on the black arrows on either side of the thumbnail timeline along the bottom. When you slide your finger in, the arrows and box will turn yellow and show you the new starting point of the video. Tap done to save it.

iPhone’s screen recording function also allows you to record yourself talking while recording your screen. To turn your microphone on, instead of immediately tapping/releasing the Record button, hold the Record button until a pop-up screen appears and then tap on

the microphone icon at the bottom, and then tap Start Recording. You’ll see the countdown begin. Tap twice to exit the screen and close the Control Center. Now the microphone will turn on any time you begin recording. If you don’t want to use your microphone, you can turn it off by returning to this screen and pressing and holding the microphone icon.

For those who own Android smartphones there is a similar option: Swipe down twice from the top of your screen and tap Screen record   .If it’s not there, tap Edit and drag Screen record   to your Quick Settings. Choose what you want to record, tap Start and the recording begins after the countdown. To stop recording, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Screen recorder notification . Your video will be in your Photos App>Library>Movies

Take advantage of this great option to record your favorite online video shorts, showcase your own teaching skills, or use this useful tool to obtain assistance by digitally documenting your problem. As always, even if you don’t think you will use this function, try it to see how it works. Follow the directions above to

Day of Celebration and Service

The City of Surprise is excited to announce the 7th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Celebration and Service, to be held Saturday, January 14 at The Vista Center for the Arts. In preparation for the celebration, the City is seeking sponsors, performers, art contest submissions and community service volunteers. Natural Hope donation

Mayor Hall and I visited My Daddy’s Italian Bakery to deliver a donation check to the owner, Jori Gentile, for her non-profit Natural Hope. Natural Hope’s mission is to empower cancer patients with helpful and hopeful information about how foods can battle the side effects that can occur during treatment. Keep up the great work!

Spring Training schedule & ticket information

Spring Training single game tickets are now on sale! Opening day is Friday, February 24 with the Kansas City Royals taking on the Texas Rangers at Surprise Stadium.

Surprise Stadium will host 30 games this season, including matchups against every team in the Cactus League. Additionally, the Royals have been selected to host a World Baseball Classic exhibition game at Surprise Stadium against Great Britain.
