FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Kenneth Olson, CMCA, AMS General Manager

PROTECTING PROPERTY VALUES is what our Association is all about! One of the biggest advantages of living in a common-interest development like Sun City Grand is the ability of the Association to preserve, protect and enhance property values. But, just how does the Board of Directors guide the Association to perform those duties? Often, we think of the Association as a collection of rules and regulations limiting personal freedoms and individuality. But, it is those same rules and regulations that protect, preserve and enhance the investment everyone has in their home. If you dust off your copy of the CC&R's (Covenants, Conditions & Restrictions) and reread them, you will see that the Board of Directors 10

have a pretty precise blueprint on how to protect your investment. First and foremost, our Association is not just made up of the Board of Directors, Board Appointed Committees and a few interested owners. It was established as a corporation in which ALL owners are members. What that means is, as an owner, you have committed yourself to become business partners with every other owner in

the community. In order to achieve the primary goal of the Association (to preserve, protect and enhance property values) certain Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions had to be established in order to achieve that goal. In those CC&R's, the Board is given the authority to establish Rules & Regulations that compliment the Association's purpose. When we follow the CC&R's and the Rules & Regulations, we are doing part of our duty as members of the Association.

threaten the investment other members have in the Association. By following the architectural guidelines and obtaining approval from the Association before any exterior architectural changes are made, we are doing part of our duty as members of the Association. Our Board of Directors is given the charge of overseeing the operations of the Association and to see to it that the CC&R's and Rules & Regulations are followed by the Association's members.

Architectural controls and guidelines and procedures for gaining architectural approval was established in order to promote aesthetic conformity and eliminate architectural changes that

The Board is made up of owners, other members just like you. They volunteer their time and energy to serve the Association because they care about the investment they have in it. Committees are

in place and some Ad Hoc Committees are formed to assist the Board with their charge. These committees are made up of volunteer owners, just like you. When you volunteer to serve on the Board of Directors, or you volunteer to serve on a committee, you are doing part of your duty as a member of the Association. Committees work handin-hand with the CAM staff to provide the Board of Directors a great deal of information to assist them in discussing issues/projects at Board Workshops and ultimately for final resolution at their monthly Board of Directors’ meetings. The Association yearly assessment is necessary to protect and maintain our community assets and to help provide professional management through our CAM staff to assist our

community. When you pay your assessment on time, you are doing part of your duty as a member of the Association. We commend our Sun City Grand owners for meeting their financial obligation to the Association since over 99% of all owners pay their assessments on time. Finally, the Board of Directors meet on a regular basis in order to make decisions, keep up-to-date on Association business and to hear from other owners in order to make proactive business decisions. As owners, keeping abreast of Association matters and contributing during Board Workshops, Chat with the Board and Board meetings is only good business. When you choose to attend the Board meetings, you are doing part of your duty as a member of the Association.

FROM THE COMMUNITY MANAGER

THE BENEFITS OF CREATIVITY

REMINDERS FROM STANDARDS

Kym Stutzman Community Manager

Recently I attended the Community Association Institute’s Annual Conference which featured keynote speaker Laura Stack. Ms. Stack is a productivity expert and I began subscribing to her quick tips. One piece entitled “Just Doing the Work Isn’t Enough: Four Ways Creativity Matters to Productivity” inspired this article. The Board, committee members, volunteers, staff, and residents all wish to see this community grow and thrive. As you may have read in my last article, SCG continues to expand its offerings and bring you the latest advances in lifestyle amenities – often due to creative solutions!

PREMIER COMMUNITY Sun City Grand’s vision statement in the 2016-2025 Strategic Plan states that “Sun City Grand is the premier active age-restricted community in Arizona.” Likewise, the Mission Statement echoes this by stating “Sun City Grand offers diverse club activities, ongoing life-long educational opportunities, golf courses, sports courts, fitness centers, swimming pools and other life-enriching assets and services at affordable, competitive fees to enhance the quality of life of our residents and to maximize the value of 12

the homeowners’ investment.” How do we continue to enhance while still maximizing value? I believe part of that answer is creativity; or “thinking out of the box,” to use Board Director John Such’s words from the June Board Meeting. We have a great team of people who never stop looking for innovations to keep SCG living up to its reputation and commitment. Whether it is a new perspective introduced by the General Manager, a PDP submitted by a resident, a recommendation to the Board from an advisory committee, or a Board directive – the ideas keep flowing in. Now we also have the win-win combination of the Long Range Planning Committee and the outside consultant Wendy Hultsman to further facilitate the sharing and implementation of these bright new ideas.

CREATIVE TIPS Laura had four main points that I would like to apply to life in Sun City Grand. The first of her points was “Everything humanity has created was once an idea.” I think this is a superb response to arguments that creativity does not come into play in an HOA. Yes, we deal with budgets, governing documents,

That your patio furniture and umbrellas must closely blend with the base color of your home? That information about your lot can only be released to the owner (or at his or her written direction)? That applications must be completed and signed by the homeowner – not the contractor? That your shrubs must be kept from growing over 5 feet in your front yard? That seeing something on a neighbor’s lot does not necessarily mean that it is allowed? Please visit GrandInfo.com for more information about selling or making changes to your home.

parliamentary rules, and operational policies. They don’t seem the least bit creative, do they? But take a simple piece of paper, a light bulb, or even an adaptive golf cart – all of these practical items were the greatest innovations of their time. Why can’t an HOA use creativity to add new features and control costs at the same time? For instance, Jeff Hochman was tasked with getting proposals for dredging our lakes – twenty years of monsoons and daily grass cutting leads to a lot of buildup on the bottom of our lakes. Estimates for emptying, dredging, drying, transporting, and disposing of this – well, muck – were astronomical; not to mention the potential loss of use of the golf courses while doing so. However, Jeff found a company that has a product that can breakdown the muck using slow-release pellets that sink down into the muck to deliver essential bio-stimulants and indigenous bacteria. Grand Lifestyles | July 2017 | grandinfo.com

FROM THE COMMUNITY MANAGER

A GROWING AND THRIVING COMMUNITY

Laura’s last point was that “a substantial portion of our economic production is now intangble.” I think that is true here at SCG every bit as much as in other factions of our economy. Outside it is sports and entertainment figures, social media sensations, web and application designers – work product. Here we have intangibles that are creative, but hard to quantify; Lorena Nieto saving money by having the ticket software revamped instead of replaced, the success of our Wine Down Wednesdays or poolside food service, the new shows that are brought in and the day trips that are scheduled, a friendly approach to Standards enforcement or the expansion of exterior color packages. Can we quantify these things as successful on paper? Or do we judge them on the goodwill exchanged between the residents and the continued desirability of our community amidst the ever present competition for retirement spots? I think that Lifestyle is driven by creativity – not just in balancing a budget or enforcing rules.

GETTING INVOLVED

They penetrate and degrade muck in ponds by stimulating naturally occurring bacteria and adding sludge-eating cultures. There would be no disruption of play and a savings possibly in the seven digits! That is innovation that is incredibly productive. The next point was “Creativity helps you compete effectively in the marketplace.” I strongly believe this to be true. The new fitness equipment that will be introduced to our community this year will keep this community competitive in the marketplace. You may ask how this is relevant to us when we aren’t a business, let me explain. SCG has seen more resales in the past six months than in any point in its history. What will attract new buyers? What do new buyers want to see offered to them as our average buyer age drops? Grand Lifestyles | July 2017 | grandinfo.com

The use of technology and up-to-date equipment in our fitness centers that average 50,000 visits a month are just the edge we need. “Modern business leaders believe that creativity is crucial.” If 60% of CEO’s asked state that “Creativity is the most important leadership quality today and in the near future,” isn’t that what we expect from our management team and resident representatives? Take the new AquaGen system that the Board approved brought forward by staff (Mark Dipper, Allison Adams, and Ken Olson). This system represents the best technology out there today. Pool water cleaned with barely any chemicals – better for your skin, fresher air in the indoor pool area, savings on chemical purchases, and extended life of pool equipment. Kudos for creativity!

Edward Everett Hale was quoted as saying “Because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.” I’m not a CPA and I am not a golfer, so I probably won’t be making any earth shattering advances in those areas; but I have education, experience, discernment and determination. Therefore, when I learn of something that is “out of the box” that I think can benefit this community – I will find an avenue to suggest or support it. I am honored to be a part of the Long Range Planning Committee and I commend the forward thinkers on that team and the Strategic Planning Committee before them. I am also honored to be part of a team of staff that refuses to get stuck in the groove of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Now I challenge each of you to lend your expertise to a committee, a Town Hall, a focus group, a survey, or whatever entices you to be creative. We would love to see new faces involved in shaping the future of life at Sun City Grand. FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS

THE SCIENCE OF GRASS ON THE GOLF COURSE n

n

n

n

n

Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations

When Sun City Grand was built and was actively selling homes, the key focus for the golf courses were to have the best winter conditions and hold onto the ryegrass as long as possible into the warmer summer months. This plan worked well to help sell the homes quickly and to have the ryegrass “hang on” longer to have better playing conditions longer into the summer months. This plan proved to be negative in the long run for the health of the base grass; Bermuda grass. Every year this practice was done, it was depriving the Bermuda grass the opportunity to have 100 days of noncompetitive growth which started to weaken the base. In 2008, it was the year that the Bermuda grass “gave up” and the conditions in the fairways were poor. It was at that time the Sun City Grand Board of Directors accepted

the plan that was presented to them by staff to put as much emphasis on summer golf as is put on winter golf. The plan included the following which include some modifications that were changed over time to improve the process. n Remove the winter ryegrass with a selective herbicide. This would remove all of the competition for the Bermuda grass and show all of the weak areas on the golf courses.

n

n

n

Close the courses for 3 weeks each and treat them just like a fall overseeding. Staff would aerify the golf course pulling cores. An outside contractor would then deep tine the fairways with ¾ inch solid tines. The ground was so hard the first couple of years and the tines would bend or snap. An outside contractor would spread 35 tons of sand per acre on the fairways to build them up to create a better growing condition for Bermuda grass. Put down sod in areas that have no sign of Bermuda grass growth in a 100 square foot area. This was about of an acre of sod plus per golf course when the program first started and there are almost no areas today that fit the original criteria for sodding. Remain on cart paths only for 3 weeks to allow the grass to fill in. (Treat the summer transition similar to the fall transition.) Double aerify and heavily topdress the greens to create less interruptions during the summer golf when this practice needs to be done. In the fall, reduce the amount of

3/4 inch solid tines that were bet or split during the beginning years of the summer transition program

While the Desert Springs course is closed, staff will be starting on raising the irrigation heads in the fairways. This process will take about 8 weeks to complete and there will be a hole or two that is closed or modified when the course opens back up from their closure while this work is being completed. 14

Grand Lifestyles | July 2017 | grandinfo.com

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS seed from 700 pounds per acre in the fairways to 550 and the roughs would go from 450 to 350. This would create some off color but would be less stressful to the Bermuda grass. The plan has been working as planned and the summer transition continues to improve each year. Staff continues to work closely with the United States Golf Association (USGA) on updated practices to continue to improve. The USGA comes out every year to evaluate the courses and they are very happy with the success of the program. All golf courses in the Southwest go through transition 2 times a year, the Fall and the Summer. Each course goes through the summer one at different times which can affect their playability/look of when you are playing it. Many things go into how well a course transitions. n Proper irrigation (head spacing, nozzles, low heads, pressure, water quality) n Course traffic/play in the winter months n Types of Bermuda grass n Weather The staff appreciates your patience and support as this necessary work is performed for the long term success of the golf program.

As conditions improve, it is easy to forget the struggles faced five years ago. Extensive sodding was needed in 2008 on No. 8 Cimarron to provide bermudagrass coverage prior to overseeding. Chronological photographs show that conditions improved in the first few years and have leveled off. The next step will be to improve irrigation uniformity.

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER

Summer Exercise Tips Allison Adams Fitness Manager

I want to wish you all a healthy, adventurous summer. So many of us find ways to escape the heat this time of year, while some of us stay because we love the sizzle. Arizona summers do require us, however, to adjust how we exercise or engage in other physical activities.

those with a higher sugar content.

A basic rule of thumb includes, you guessed it, staying hydrated. Prepare by drinking water before during and after your workout. To properly hydrate after long or challenging physical activity, measure your weight before and after exercise. For each pound lost, drink a quart of water. Drinks that contain electrolytes can accelerate hydration, just try to avoid

If you still want to get outdoors, make sure it’s as early as possible, after the sun comes up. We know how quickly it heats up here in the valley of the sun. Heat adds stress to the body. Be smart about how you approach your physical activity during the hottest time of the year. Remember, if you choose to cool off in the water, you still need to drink fluids to stay hydrated.

If you’d prefer to get your exercise indoors, let the SCG Fitness department provide you with a new option; aside from your standard gym routine. This July 20th, Sun City Grand Fitness is hosting the Tri-This! Indoor Triathlon! We wanted to host an event that keeps you safe from the outdoor elements while still providing a challenge in a fun and temperature-controlled environment. Registration is now open at Adobe. Cost is only $20 for registration, performance T, and medal of completion. For $60, you can register and attend 10 training sessions (in a group) with Charles,

to improve your fitness for race day. SCG personal trainer, Charles Crevequer, is offering group classes, specific to triathlon training that will enhance your fitness levels and help you to do your best on race day. This event does not cater just to the elite fitness individuals who are your neighbors in Grand, but to all of you who wish to focus your efforts on improving your fitness level, no matter what your current fitness level is. FROM THE TREASURER

OPERATING

Larry Marden Board Treasurer

As we settle in for a long, hot summer, I am pleased to report that Sun City Grand does not face any significant financial issues. Our results through the end of April show an operating surplus that exceeds the 2017 budget by $89,000. Both our revenues and our expenses beat the budget numbers, by $31,000 and $58,000 respectively. No doubt some of you are concerned, or at least wondering, about the large expenditures we have made recently or are about to make. The Board just approved replacing our fitness equipment to the tune of $500,000, and as you all know we are in the process of refurbishing the Chaparral Center at a cost of around 20

$2 million. Let me assure you that the Board, CAM, and the Finance Advisory Committee are well aware of what we are spending. Not only were these and all other major expenditures anticipated in our planning for 2017, but we have been steadily accumulating money in our Reserve Fund over the years for expenditures such as these. As a 20 year old community, it is no surprise that the time has come to revitalize our facilities and assets to restore them to the quality that brought us here in the first place. Furthermore, every year at budget time we scrutinize the Reserve Fund before anything else to make sure that we can continue to replace our assets when necessary into the distant future. Some residents have asked where our $25 million + in cash assets is kept. The Association has an investment policy, approved by the Board many years ago and just recently updated, that spells out the kinds of investments we are permitted to make and not permitted to make. Our

SURPLUS

overall goal is to earn the highest possible return while preserving our capital. To such end, we are not permitted to invest our funds in volatile or unpredictable instruments such as stocks and options. All of our bank deposits are FDIC insured, and we only purchase bonds that are highly rated by Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s, insured, government guaranteed, or prerefunded (meaning the money has already been set aside to pay them off). We keep our working cash in money market funds. To illustrate, we own many, many bank CD’s with balances under $250,000, the maximum

amount that is FDIC insured. This means we have accounts at just about every bank you can think of. (We receive a heck of a lot of statements, but our Finance Department, with assistance from our advisor at Wells Fargo, does a fine job keeping it all straight.) I hope you have a wonderful summer and stay cool. My wife and I plan several trips away from the desert, some of which are made possible by the Board President’s decision to declare a hiatus from early July through late August. Thank you, Ellie. All the best, Larry

Revision Process Overview Dear Sun City Grand Home Owners,

obtained. We are considering a number of options, including electronic communication.

The Board Ad Hoc Committee to revise the SCG Covenants, Conditions & Restrictions (CC&Rs) and Bylaws has completed its work. The recommended revisions have been prepared. Our committee, the Consent Committee, must now consider just how these revisions will be presented to SCG Owners and outline the process by which these revisions are to be approved. For now, the following summary, in a Q and A format, is intended to give you an overview of this revision process and how it will develop going forward. 1. Who proposed these recommended changes? The process of recommending these changes was proposed by the SCG Board Ad Hoc Committee which included two Directors and four Owners and whose work was reviewed by the Association Attorney. 2. Why do these documents need to be revised? The CC&Rs and Bylaws have been changed three times using the Consent by Owners to approve the Age Initiative, to establish the CARE (Community and Residential Enhancement) fee and to change the CARE fee to equal the annual assessment. Changes are being recommended at this time so that the CC&Rs and Bylaws better reflect the interests of SCG Owners. These documents are what we live by. Unfortunately, they originally were drafted by the developer for the benefit of the developer—not the Owners. They remain that way today, twenty years later and will remain so until the Owners give their consent to the changes being proposed. 3. What is meant by giving consent? In this instance, it means to accept the changes that are being recommended. 4. How will the recommended changes be presented to the Owners? The Consent Committee is developing the process by which the community will be informed of the recommended changes and the process by which consent by SCG Owners will be

Grand Lifestyles | July 2017 | grandinfo.com

5. Where can I go to receive information about the major changes that are being proposed? A summary of significant changes in the documents will be available to all SCG Owners. Redlined documents that show all additions and deletions will also be available on the SCG Board web site: www. grandinfo.com 6. How many Owners will have to give their consent for the new documents to be approved? Sixty-seven percent of the 9802 current Owners will have to consent to the recommended changes in the CC&Rs and fifty-one percent will have to consent to the recommended changes in the Bylaws. 7. Does each Owner have to consent or is it per Lot? As per current governing documents, the consent will be one per Lot. Owners who own more than one Lot will asked for their consent for each Lot owned. This is a very significant undertaking on behalf of the entire SCG community. Therefore, please know we want you to be informed and involved to the greatest possible extent. Consent Committee

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE

A Progressive Care Unit Under Construction BANNER DEL E. WEBB MEDICAL CENTER IN SUN CITY WEST

Ron Guziak CEO and President, The Colonnade

Twenty-eight private rooms, a functional and aesthetically pleasing design and scenic views of the surrounding landscape are just some of the defining features of the $10.9 million Progressive Care Unit now under construction on the 5th Floor, D-Tower at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center in Sun City West. The unit, which will serve patients with serious conditions that require around-the-clock cardiac monitoring, is the latest example of the good that has sprung from the partnership between Banner Health and Sun Health formed in 2008. In case you didn’t know, Sun Health Foundation is the exclusive fundraising partner of Banner Del E. Webb and Banner Boswell medical centers. Through our partnership with Banner, funds from Sun Health Foundation 24

donors, have enabled both medical centers to keep up with the latest advances in health care, benefiting not just patients and their loved ones but also the doctors, nurses and other health professionals dedicated to providing superior health care to the community, which includes Sun City Grand.

its goal of having 100 percent private rooms. Private rooms are more than just patient pleasers, they also decrease the risk of hospital-acquired infections, reduce the risk of falls and help patients feel more relaxed and sleep better, all of which lead to faster recovery times.

Banner Del E. Webb opened in 1988 with overwhelming support from the community, support that continues to this day. In addition to financial gifts, community members have volunteered hundreds of thousands of hours to make the medical center a more friendly and healing place. That community support has allowed us to continuously improve the hospital’s services and quality of care, whether it be offering a higher level of trauma care or opening the West Valley’s first Birthing Center for parents desiring a more home-like birth experience.

Other amenities include a comfortable family waiting

area, a private consult room for clinicians and families and a room where patients with limited mobility can have their hair washed in a salon-style sink or receive a complete shower while lying on a stretcher. High-quality artwork featuring nature scenes, wide doorways and bathrooms that are easy to get in and out of are other touches that will make for a better patient experience. Banner Health and Sun Health Foundation have committed $5.9 million of the $10.9 million expansion. We are challenging community members to help us raise an additional $5 million for the project. It’s an investment that benefits all of us as we strive to make health care better for our communities. Please join us in this effort. For information about how you can support this project, including our “buy a bed” program, call 623-832-5330, or go to www. sunhealthfoundation.org/ progress.

The Progressive Care Unit, scheduled to open later this summer, reflects a trend in designing and building health care spaces that contribute to the healing process. Numerous studies have found that outdoor views, natural light and private rooms lower patient’s stress levels, reduce infection rates, lessen pain and shorten hospital stays. All of rooms on the new unit are private, which brings Banner Del E. Webb closer to Grand Lifestyles | July 2017 | grandinfo.com

FIGHT THE BITE

Now that we are entering July we are also entering the heart of mosquito season, so beware of the escalating health risks caused by mosquito bites. Most people think mosquito bites only cause itching or skin irritation, but a few of the 200-plus mosquito species in North America carry viruses acquired from birds and animals that can cause debilitating diseases in humans, even death, including West Nile and Zika viruses. C.H.A.P.S. house inspectors have found mosquitoes breeding in standing water at our residents’ homes. The No. 1 prevention practice

for our residents is to eliminate any standing water that could serve as a mosquito breeding site. Things like buckets, fire pits, fountains, bird baths, animal dishes and plant saucers can collect enough water for mosquitoes to breed. These are the kinds of things residents should turn over or completely drain. Pools and decorative water features should have a working pump to keep the water moving, especially during our summer monsoon season eliminate standing water in your yard and “Fight The Bite”.

SAFETY TIP

Watch out for our early morning walkers as you drive Sun City Grand streets. Give walkers the right-of-way. Stop when walkers are in a cross-walk and crossing the street and for everyone’s safety… slow down. Our next C.H.A.P.S. General meeting is Tuesday, July 25, at 1:30 at the Sonoran Plaza. Artist in Residence Bob Diekmann When Bob Diekmann was employed in Kansas City, he was responsible for an international division of an employer company with operations in 62 countries. Before joining SCG Art Club, Bob’s only previous art experience was a semester of Art Appreciation in college. It turned out he did appreciate art, but work got in the way. Bob described himself as a “chronic doodler” in school which he believes helped him concentrate but probably also fueled his craving to create art. Having to travel internationally for work, he was afforded opportunities to visit some of the world’s great art museums and galleries further, influencing his interest in art, especially oil paintings. Probably the biggest influence in shaping Bill’s painting was Claude Monet’s work, however, he says his work is more like Grandma Moses. Working only in oil, Bob considers himself a “want-to-be” artist, but he enjoys painting and the people he paints with at SCG Art Club. At present, Bob

feels the painting he is most proud of is the one of the Grand Canyon with an eagle flying above. Bob had a major setback in his art career when a teacher told him he would never amount to anything

42

Grand Lifestyles | July 2017 | grandinfo.com

because he could not color inside the lines. He admitted he had to “cut off his ear” in second grade (I am pretty sure this was a reference to Vincent VanGogh since I am confident Bob still has both ears). Trying to come up with new ideas for paintings has always been a challenge for him confessing “creativity” is not his strong suit. His dream project is to paint a large landscape that Claude Monet would like to copy. Bob paints a bit in his casita here at SCG to “keep out of the way”, I presuming from his wife, and also in his basement in Kansas City. He says the light is not very good down there but it helps his paintings. He also admitted when there are tornado warnings he doesn’t have to move all his stuff down there to keep it safe. Funny guy, eh? Bob believes you will not find more enjoyable, helpful, and encouraging people than at SCG Art Club, and he suggests giving one of their many classes a try. Perhaps your Monet or VanGogh is hiding just below the surface. The facilities at the club offer a great atmosphere to create in. The only suggestion he has for

Grand Lifestyles | July 2017 | grandinfo.com

improvement is a coffee pot as he feels he is much more productive “wired”. At the very least, stop by the Art Club to see the many artist’s works on display. Perhaps it will motivate you to risk coloring outside the lines.

WALNUT CANYON NATIONAL MONUMENT & PICNIC Walnut Canyon was established as a National Monument in 1915, to preserve numerous cliff dwellings located along the limestone ledges of this deep canyon. Evidence of human use of these dwellings can be traced back 2,000 years. The presence of water in this dry land made the canyon rare and valuable to its early human inhabitants. It is a beautiful and interesting place to explore, a road less traveled. We’ll enjoy a delicious family style picnic, and an opportunity to explore some of the easier trails, if you are so inclined; or just enjoy the day at our picnic site and sightsee from the comfort of our bus. Escape the heat of the Valley this summer with this High Country Adventure! *This trip is offered in conjunction with TJ Travels. 8TH ANNUAL MAGDELENA BASH HARVEST FESTIVAL We’re on our way to the Sonoita/Elgin Wine Region—a gorgeous scenic drive through the rolling grasslands of Southern Arizona— surrounded by the Whetstone, Santa Rita and Huachuca Mountains. At an altitude of 5,000 feet, expect summer temperatures in the mid 80’s, a nice relief from the heat of the Valley! Kief Joshua Vineyards will be hosting the 8th Annual Magdelena Bash, honoring Kief’s 97 year old grandmother. Magdelena’s festival offers us all a wonderful opportunity to taste several new wine releases, listen to some great music on the patio and enjoy lunch on own. The Sonoita/Elgin Wine Trail is considered to be one of the top ten trails in the country, and Kief Joshua Vineyards is certainly the prettiest winery on the trail— offering a lovely Italian Gothic ambience. 20TH ANNUAL EMPTY BOWLS IN PRESCOTT For 20 years Empty Bowls, a grassroots movement to feed the hungry, has raised thousands of dollars for Prescott Community Cupboard, Chino Valley Food Bank, Prescott Valley Food Bank, Yavapai Food Bank and Open Door. All very worthy charitable organizations! Tables are set across the historic courthouse lawn, spread with beautiful ceramic or wooden bowls crafted by Arizona artists. Attendees to this charitable event pay $15 to select their bowl and before they take it home, they will be able to fill it twice with gourmet soups prepared by local chefs. Prescott merchants also donate plenty of rolls and bottled water. The chefs really get busy that week—stirring up as many as 14 different gourmet soups—with choices like: tortilla chicken, potato cream cheese, New England clam chowder, tomato mushroom bisque… we could go on and on! Every step of the way generous donations are made by Arizonans across the state; from potters to wood turners, restaurants and local stores. Prescott Girl Scouts wash all of the bowls before they get ladled with soup, and dozens of volunteers work hard to make an event like this so successful! TJ’s is picking up the $15 bowl fee, and after lunch we’ll head over to scenic Fain Park for iced tea and dessert. This is going to be a really fun and worthwhile event, and a great opportunity to escape the heat of the Valley! *This trip is offered in conjunction with TJ Travels. MONTEZUMA CASTLE NATIONAL MONUMENT & LUNCH IN OLD TOWN COTTONWOOD Montezuma Castle, often described as a prehistoric high rise apartment complex, is a 20 room structure that tells the story of the ancient Sinagua people and their ability to survive in a harsh desert landscape. One of the best preserved cliff dwellings in the United States, this prehistoric structure makes for an incredible tour. No less fascinating is Montezuma Well, just 11 miles from Montezuma Castle; it is like no other place on planet Earth. Formed long ago by the collapse of a limestone cavern, over one million gallons of water a day flows continuously into the Well. This constant supply of warm, fresh water provides an aquatic habitat that has served as an oasis for wildlife and humans for thousands of years. We’ll also enjoy lunch on own in charming Old Town Cottonwood—where Main Street is lined with great little cafes, galleries, antique stores, and wine tasting rooms. ROCK ART RANCH & CASA BLANCA CAFÉ One of Arizona’s most hidden treasures, the Rock Art Canyon Ranch, was once part of the Hashknife Gang Spread, and is still home to the last remaining Hashknife bunkhouse. It is also home to a charming pioneer, cowboy and Anasazi museum, where you can explore hundreds of artifacts that were found on the property. But most of all, this 5,000 acre ranch between Winslow and Holbrook is home to one of the best preserved collections of ancient petroglyphs in the world. Chevelon Canyon, a narrow, deep and watered gorge, cuts through the ranch. Miles of petroglyphs etch the steep canyon walls. Visitors to the Rock Art Ranch are welcome to climb down into the canyon on a natural staircase that has been supplemented with a few manmade steps. The ranch has huge archaeological significance with researchers from the Smithsonian and Heard Museums regularly visiting these petroglyphs that date from 6000 B.C. to 1400. If this isn’t enough, the Rock Art Ranch is also home to a herd of buffalo, who freely roam the land, and will occasionally stroll right into our ranks. We’ll stop in Winslow for lunch on own at Casa Blanca Café, a Route 66 Mexican restaurant— family owned since1942. The food is delicious and they are famous for their green chili and blue corn tortillas. *This trip is offered in conjunction with TJ Travels. MAIL-ONLY ELECTION SPECIAL ELECTION ON NOVEMBER 7, 2017

Jim Hayden Council Member, District 2

I hope you’re enjoying the summer months, whether you are at home in Surprise, or traveling elsewhere. Because summertime tends to take our focus away on everyday situations, I wanted to be sure that you were aware of a very important action coming before you this fall. City Council has authorized a Special Election on November 7, 2017 in which the voters of Surprise will be asked to decide three General Obligation Bond questions in the areas of Public Safety, Traffic Congestion Mitigation and Pavement Preservation. This will be a mail-only election. All registered voters in Surprise will receive a ballot by mail. If you are not currently registered to vote, please visit the Maricopa County Recorder’s website at https://recorder.maricopa.gov/elections/ registrationform.aspx or call them at 602-506-3535. It is important that your voice be heard! As you may remember last fall, Surprise voters rejected a $63 million General Obligation bond initiative that would have funded nine capital improvement projects over the next five years. The initiative failed by fewer than 500 votes. Bottom line, the city’s capital needs remain. So, over the past year, City Staff reviewed project needs and utilized resident feedback obtained during the 2016 bond education process to create three separate proposed questions that would fund capital improvement projects in the areas of Public Safety, Traffic Congestion Mitigation, and Pavement Preservation. You asked for 52

choices. This year, you will have them. The Surprise Capital Improvement Funding Exploratory Committee was briefed, April 19, 2017, by City staff on the proposed capital improvement projects. Input received at and following the meeting resulted in the following three potential questions: Public Safety Question: Voters in Surprise are asked to consider a $34 million public safety bond proposal to: build a Public Safety Evidence & Readiness Center; renovate an existing city facility into a Police Training Facility; acquire Land for Future Fire Station/Police Substation & Park; build a new Fire Station at Cactus and Litchfield roads; build a permanent Fire Station along 163rd Avenue, south of Happy Valley Road, to replace the current temporary station; and build a Public Works Operations Facility to centralize operations. The annual cost for a homeowner would be approximately $26 per $100,000 in Limited Property Value (LPV). Traffic Congestion Mitigation Question: Voters in Surprise are asked to consider a $15.5 million street bond proposal to provide funds to plan, design, construct and improve Waddell, Greenway and Litchfield roads. The annual cost for a homeowner would be approximately $12 per $100,000 in Limited Property Value (LPV). Pavement Preservation Question: Voters in Surprise are asked to consider a $10 million street pavement preservation bond proposal to plan, design, construct, replace and improve deteriorated street pavement citywide. The annual cost for a homeowner would

be approximately $8 per $100,000 in Limited Property Value (LPV). So by now you are asking, what’s the cost to me? Let’s explore…. General Obligation Bonds are sold to investors who are repaid with interest. The repayment comes from a secondary property tax, which Surprise does not currently have. If all three questions are approved, the annual secondary property tax could be up to $46 per $100,000 in Limited Property Value, or approximately $4 per month ($92 per $200,000 in Limited Property Value, or approximately $8 per month). You can determine the exact cost to your property by following the steps listed at www.surpriseaz.gov/ decidesurprise. While online, you can also see project renderings, detailed project needs analyses, costs, and voter information. We will also be planning a series of educational public meetings on this issue ahead of the November 7 Special Election. Meeting dates and locations will be posted at www.surpriseaz.gov/ decidesurprise. If you have a bond election meeting request for your group or organization, please call the City Manager’s Office at 623.222.1100 to get something scheduled. As always, I am available to discuss any questions you may have. Reach out anytime at 623.222.1322 or jim. hayden@surpriseaz.gov. Grand Lifestyles | July 2017 | grandinfo.com

TREE TOPPINGGOOD OR BAD

Topping a tree because it is too large for the space is a common practice. Topping means the indiscriminate cutting of tree branches to stubs or cutting lateral branches that are too small to assume the terminal role. Sometimes this practice is called heading, tipping, hat-raking, or rounding over.

This Article was provided by

Mike Secrist from Gothic Grounds Management

Topping a tree can cause sunburn. This can lead to the bark splitting or loss of some of the remaining branches. Topping cause the tree to stress. The removal of over 50% of the trees leaves can cause the tree to go into shock. The shock will trigger the tree to generate new growth. If the tree does not have enough food reserves to support the new growth, it can die.

Topping a tree will cause the tree to quickly produce new shoots. The new branches grow below the removed limb and are only connected the outermost layer of the removed branch. This connection is week and the new branch is prone to break under windy or other stress conditions. The alternative to topping a tree is

called drop-crotching. This will reduce the size of the tree while still preserving the natural structure. Drop-crotching is a type of thinning cut that reduces a tree’s size while preserving its natural shape. To drop-crotch, select and cut higher branches back to laterals that are at least one-third the diameter of the limbs being removed. Cut outside the branch collar at a 45 to 60 degree angle to the branch bark ridge.

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT

UPDATING SOFTWARE

Dear Cappie, Every time I turn around, my phone, tablet, or computer is asking me to restart and update something or other. Why is this necessary if everything is working just fine on my device? Mort Dear Mort,

and helps keep you secure.

I certainly understand how you feel. When he wants to play, my brother Tangelo is like a kitty on steroids. I try to ignore him and keep on snoozing, but he won’t go away. I know in my heart that it is good for me to get up, join him, and run around so I can maintain my good health… and the same is true with updates. They are annoying but extremely necessary to keep your device in good health and safe from online virus and malware attacks.

Unfortunately, too many people turn off updates or refuse to take the time to install them when the message pops up on their screens. Many claim the reason is that they like their software to remain as it has been or because they fear the updates themselves may be malicious. Some simply do not want to deal with the downtime it takes for updates to install.

Hackers can find weaknesses in software and then exploit those weaknesses to access your computer, smartphone, tablet (and other devices), so it is essential that you protect yourself by keeping your operating system and applications updated. The companies that provide operating systems are constantly monitoring and safeguarding their programs and then sending improved security software to legitimate devices. Just last month, there was a massive cybersecurity attack that took its toll on computers in more than 150 countries. However, those who had installed the Microsoft security patch were immune from the ransomware highjacking attack. Installing updates fixes vulnerabilities

A recent Pew Research Center survey showed that over 14% of consumers never updated their smartphone and over 42% stated they found updates to be “inconvenient” and waited days or even weeks to update their phones’ operating systems. Cappie strongly suggests that when an update is announced, it should be installed as soon as possible. The longer a vulnerability is left unpatched, the more time available for hackers to exploit the weakness. Most modern software and applications update automatically, but for some applications, you must agree to install updates when prompted. Microsoft changed its update policy with Windows 10 to allow automatically installed updates, with some flexibility

you personally install on your devices

about timing for the user. Major upgrades can only be deferred for 180 days. Apple used to update their software only once a year but now do monthly security patches. Also, when you purchase a new device, check for updates as part of initial set up, and check the box that enables updates be done automatically. Besides just operating systems, such as Windows, Mac OS, iOS, and Android, you also need to keep all other software updated: n antivirus and security software (anti-virus updates generally occur daily and most applications will default to installing them automatically) n browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc. n web plugins, for Adobe products like Adobe Flash, Fireworks, etc; Reader, Skype, iTunes, Java, ActiveX, etc. n other types of applications like Microsoft Office or apps purchased in the Apple Store, Android Market, or Windows Store

The best way to remain safe online is to follow some simple safety rules: n First and foremost, keep current on your operating system and software updates. n Never open or forward suspicious looking email, or respond to a social media message from someone you don’t know. n Do not click on unknown links. n Always make sure you log out of your accounts when you’ve finished with them and log off a computer when you’ve finished using it-- especially if it not your own device. n When outside of your home, never use a hotspot that may be unsecured, especially when what you’re doing is personal or private. n Before downloading apps onto your phone or software onto your computer, do some research - check what the app is asking for access to (look for apps permissions in Settings) and check an app’s rating in the iOS, Windows or Google Play store n Use common sense when surfing the internet.

Special thanks to Art, a SCG resident, for sending this great photo of Leo, his 9-week -old German shepherd/bulldog mix. WEEDS

Friendly Reminder from Standards We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list.Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.
