THIS ISSUE WILL NOT HAVE OUR CURRENT

FINANCIAL RESULTS.

Stay tuned for next month’s issue for the latest financials. The Association is very healthy, and we appreciate your patience.

The 2024 budget was approved by the Board of Directors on October 26, 2023, with a tremendous amount of input from residents, advisory committees, and staff. A lot of hard work went into the budget to keep expenses and dues down.

Over the past year inflation has put tremendous upward pressure on the cost of everything –utilities, labor cost, supplies and maintenance services. Many community expenses have increased in double digit percentages while the dues increase approved for this budget year is less than 4%.

The Board was able to minimize the increase of the annual assessment resulting in an increase of just $5.50 a month or $66 a year. Below is a chart that shows where your assessment funds go. You will notice that 25% of the assessments go to fund our Reserve Fund (maintenance and replacement of current assets) and the remaining 75% towards running the day-to-day operations.

The annual assessment funding the reserves is extremely important to help keep property values in the community up. It enables us to keep the buildings painted, repair the parking lots, replace air conditioning units and fund the recently approved irrigation/bunker project on Desert Springs without having to do any special assessments like other communities have done.

Our goal is to keep you informed and run The Grand efficiently

THE ART OF RESPECTFUL PLAY

Golf is not just a game; it's a tradition deeply rooted in etiquette and sportsmanship. As you step onto the course, you enter a realm where respect, integrity, and courtesy are paramount. Whether you're a seasoned golfer or a newcomer, understanding and practicing golf etiquette is essential. Golfers are expected to show considerations to other golfers during their round. This includes playing at a prompt pace, looking out for the safety of others, and not distracting the play of another player.

Here are some key points to keep in mind:

1. RESPECT THE COURSE

Treat the golf course with reverence. Repair divots, rake bunkers, and fix ball marks on greens. Leave the course in as good (or better) condition than you found it. Remember, the next golfer would appreciate a well-maintained course as much as you do.

2. PACE OF PLAY

Keep the game moving with these helpful tips.

n Play ready golf: Play whenever it is safe to do so. The old etiquette of “you’re away” no longer applies.

n Plan your shot before you get to your ball: Once you are off the tee, think ahead. Determine your yardage and make your club selection before it is your turn to play.

n Keep your pre-shot routine short: Pick your line of play once and trust yourself. Try to take no more than one or two practice swings, then set up to the ball and play your shot. Most importantly, be ready to hit when it is your turn.

n Hit first, then search: Play your shot before going over to help your playing partner.

n Finish out: Finish short putts on the green rather than marking them.

n Be helpful to others in your group:

Follow the flight of all tee shots, not just your own. Volunteer to fill in a divot or rake a bunker for another player if needed.

n When you share a cart, work together: If you are the cart driver, drop off your passenger at their ball before proceeding to your own ball. Be ready to play when it is your turn, and then pick up your partner.

n Keep up with the group in front of you: Your correct position on the course is immediately behind the group in front of you, not immediately in front of the group behind you. Arrive at your next shot just before the group in front leaves the area in front of you.

3. MUSIC ON THE COURSE

Over the past few years, listening to background music while playing golf has become increasingly popular. It is not against the USGA rules of golf for players to listen to music on the golf course if it is unrelated to the competition in which you are playing, i.e. to block out distractions or to assist with swing tempo.

With that Grand Golf would like to suggest the following guidelines for golfers to utilize when listening to music on the course.

1) Ask your playing partners if they are agreeable to music being played.

2) Make sure only you can hear it. Use earbuds or keep the volume low. If it is loud enough that the group behind you can hear it, then you are causing a distraction.

3) Get some consensus on what to play within your group.

4. SAFETY FIRST

Always prioritize safety. Before swinging, ensure that it is safe to do so by making sure the fairway or greens are clear.

5. DRESS CODE

Please make sure you and your guests are aware of the Grand Golf Dress Code that can be found on the golf home page at

6. BE MINDFUL OF OTHERS

Be aware of your surroundings and the groups playing ahead and behind you. Avoid distracting behaviors such as walking through someone's line of sight, standing too close to them while they're putting, or driving up to groups that are playing a shot.

7. LEAVE NO TRACE

Finally, leave no trace of your presence on the course. Dispose of trash properly, avoid damaging vegetation, and follow golf cart traffic guidelines by driving on the best turf available and following cart traffic signs.

Mastering golf etiquette is about more than just following rules; it's about embodying the spirit of the game. By respecting the course, prioritizing safety, and fostering camaraderie, you contribute to a positive golfing experience for yourself and others. So, the next time you step onto the fairway, remember these principles and play your part in upholding the traditions of this great sport.

Weeds: Friendly Reminder From Standards

We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in The Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

Age-related changes that diminish heat tolerance during summer exercise

Exercise is an essential part of every healthy lifestyle. It is particularly important for older adults and their need to counteract the effects of aging, especially sarcopenia and osteoporosis. Exercise programs must be uniquely designed and constantly re-evaluated as an individuals learns and applies that knowledge in real world activities.

KEY POINTS

Some laboratory studies have indicated that individuals over the age of 60 are less heat tolerant than younger individuals and that both older men and women are limited in their ability to exercise in hot conditions.

However, these conclusions are not supported by research performed on older athletes. When healthy consistent athletes 55-70 years old are compared with young adults of similar aerobic fitness, acclimation state, body size, and body composition, both groups actually respond with similar rates of heat storage and similar body core temperatures during exercise in the heat. In addition, both older athletes and young adults are equally capable of acclimating to exercise in the heat. There are age-related changes in

control of blood flow to the skin, but subtle differences in the way older athletes and young adults respond to exercise in the heat have been discovered.

Fluid consumption is important for people of all ages before, during, and after exercise in hot conditions. However, adequate fluid intake is particularly important for older athletes.

Aerobic fitness, acclimation, and hydration state are far more important in successfully exercising in hot environments than is age.

INTRODUCTION

Aging is often associated with lower physiologic function, including a decreased ability to regulate body temperature

effectively during heat stress. Older athletes respond to heat exercising with higher core temperatures and heart rates, lower sweating rates, and a greater loss of body fluid when compared to younger individuals. But does chronological age alone cause poor heat tolerance or are there other factors which play a larger role than age itself? A partial list of such factors is shown below, all of which are independent of chronological age:

• Decreased aerobic capacity (VO2max) and associated variables.

• Sedentary lifestyle

• Altered body composition (decreased lean body mass)

• Chronic hypohydration (reduced fluid

intake and/or increased fluid excretion)

• Chronic diseases (hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, etc.)

• Increased use of prescription medications

When dealing with exercise and heat tolerance in older athletes, it is important to understand the questions to be asked. Is an "average" 65-yearold at greater risk of heat illness during sustained activity than is an "average" 25-year-old? Is a fit, healthy, older athlete at greater risk of heat illness than an average 25- year-old?

HYDRATION & BODY FLUIDS

Aging is accompanied by reduced thirst and increased excretion of water by the kidney, which ultimately can lead to a state of hyperosmolar hypohydration. While not entirely accurate, this is often referred to as dehydration.

When "average fit" older (60's) and younger (20's) men were purposely fluidrestricted during heat exposure for three hours, older men reduced their blood volume and increased plasma osmolality to a greater extent, even though weight loss was similar to that of the younger men. More importantly however, older men rated themselves as less thirsty.

Studies have shown a similar inability in older male and female athletes to maintain plasma volume during heat stress. Because maintenance of plasma volume during exercise affects performance, it seems wise to pay close attention to hydration issues when advising older athletes.

A 1.5- to 2-percent loss of body weight through fluid will negatively affect the ability to perform neurologically. Things like reaction time, quickness, and mood can go downhill very quickly. When you add to that both decreased aerobic capacity and cardiac output, you will feel terrible and perform terribly, too.

For the hottest, hardest exercise days, a hyperhydration strategy is where it’s at. This works great for scenarios where you have to bring your own fluids to a golf game, or a tennis or pickleball match. The reason it works great is that not only do you have extra fluid, that extra fluid increases your cardiac output.

It increases the amount of blood your heart can pump per stroke and even though it doesn’t change your redblood-cell concentration, the mere fact that if you can push more fluid and blood, you will deliver more oxygen and do a better job of cooling the body. You will also have more of a water reserve for sweat to cool your body.

Look for a concentration of sodium in your water that is the same as normal blood (3.5g/L) since, if you’re dehydrated, this will more likely stay in your body, rather than be filtered by your kidneys and peed out. There are a number of electrolyte mixes available, all with varying degrees of efficacy, that you can add to obtain this concentration.

As the body’s kidneys detect less sodium in the bloodstream (sodium concentrations decrease as one dehydrates), the body gets

rid of water more easily in an effort to maintain its desired sodium concentration (3.5g/L). A hyperhydration drink will naturally enter the body at 3.5g/L, so it will be absorbed more easily and stay in the body, rather than get excreted by the kidneys and urinary tract.

We Want and Need You For C.H.A.P.S. Volunteer Service

We are looking for Grand men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. Call the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us! You may also find more information about C.H.A.P.S. (including an application form to join) at livegrandaz.com – Volunteer Central – C.H.A.P.S. Resident Patrol C.H.A.P.S. NEEDS

RESPONDING TO AN UNPRECENDENTED VACATION WATCH SURGE

A rapid increase in the number of Vacation Watch applications has created a record-high level of demand for this popular C.H.A.P.S. service. At the beginning of May, there were applications for more than 400 houses and applications and requests exceeded 500 at the end of May. The last time requests topped 500 was back in 2011. In 2019, the last summer before the pandemic, an average of about 350 houses were registered for vacation watch. C.H.A.P.S. responded to the surge of demand in three ways: (1) Made it possible to fill out request forms online; (2) Increased maximum daily vacation watches from the usual two teams to three; and (3) Added five more vacation watch days in May. C.H.A.P.S. members quickly volunteered for the additional patrols. Arrangements were made to use a third CAM vehicle. Vacation Watch days in May rose from the initial 11 days to 16. In June, 14 vacation watch days were scheduled with two to three teams each day. The day starts at 6:30 a.m. and ends around 8:30 a.m. and one team typically covers 20 houses. Applications are divided into two categories - one is for initial inspection and the second is the periodic inspections. In May, all incoming houses were registered for initial inspections. Application forms are then transferred to the periodic inspection books.

Please think about joining us! We could definitely use your help and it is a great way to help keep our community safe. Plus, you make new friends!

VOLUNTEER OF THE QUARTER

Allen Edwards is the Volunteer of the First Quarter of 2024. Allen joined C.H.A.P.S. in April 2017 and volunteers for both Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. Giving back to the community and enjoying the camaraderie of C.H.A.P.S. were the main reasons that he first decided to volunteer. Congratulations Allen!

C.H.A.P.S.

VACATION WATCH

Vacation watch is a service of C.H.A.P.S. that provides periodic inspections of houses while you are away. To register your house, complete a Vacation Watch Request Form that is available in the Palm Center Welcome Center, the Membership Office and at livegrandaz.com. Forms may be completed online or returned to the Membership Office. To use this service, homeowners must be away for a minimum of two weeks and designate a keyholder. When an irregularity is found, the keyholder will be notified. C.H.A.P.S. does not report homeowner violations to the Standards Office.

EVENING PATROL

Early in the evening, volunteers patrol neighborhoods in Association vehicles to observe and report unusual activity. Open garage doors and street light outages are the main objectives. Patrols are also on the lookout for any type of activity or situation that is not normal.

TO VOLUNTEER

We are always looking for volunteers. New members will receive lessons and field training. There are many choices for patrol days to fit your schedule. If you are interested, call the C.H.A.P.S. office (623) 546-7553, ask any C.H.A.P.S. member for information, or come to our next meeting, which is at 1:30pm in the Sonoran Plaza on Tuesday, July 23.

DONATIONS

Donations to C.H.A.P.S. may be given to the Membership Office. Make checks payable to Sun City Grand Community Association and designate “Donation to C.H.A.P.S.” Our activities incur numerous incidental expenses that are covered by donations. Thank you to everyone who submitted donations in May as the Vacation Watch house count rose rapidly.

BRITAIN’S FINEST

Britain’s Finest is an experience unlike any other. You may have seen Beatles tribute acts before, but this time you’ll be in awe of the enthusiasm and energy for which they are recognized and remembered. After every performance, audience members are struck at first by the incredible recreation of those ohso-familiar songs the world has come to love, but then become mesmerized by the off-thecuff humor and the cheeky banter that takes place between songs.

Britain’s Finest was featured twice on AXS TV’s “The World’s Greatest Tribute Bands”, they held the top four spots in the Volume 5 compilation song chart of the same name available on iTunes. On Chris Carter’s Sunday morning’s “Breakfast with the Beatles” show on KLOS 95.5, Chris Carter said, “Interviewing Britain’s Finest must have been what it would’ve been like interviewing the Beatles”, which was a huge compliment. Britain’s Finest was also featured in an article by Niki Payne on CBS Los Angeles, Best Tribute bands in LA. She wrote, “Britain’s Finest is as close to the real deal as you may ever find in this lifetime”. Lee DeCarlo, recording engineer for John Lennon’s “Double Fantasy” album said after a performance at a private event, “ You guys are really great, you remind me so much of the lads”.

The Grand Strategic Plan is Taking Shape!

Back in February we shared in the Lifestyles Magazine the definition of a strategic plan and why it is important for our community. We are delighted to update you on the progress that we are making in completing the first phase, which is strategy development.

The following diagram highlights the three phases of developing the Grand strategic plan. The first phase, strategy development, identifies the strategic goals of the community, and objectives to meet those goals. In addition, it outlines the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) that are used to measure how successful we are in achieving the community goals and objectives.

Leveraging months of work analyzing the results of the resident lifestyle survey, output from the community planning workshop, committee plans, and market research, we are excited to share the strategic goals, objectives, and KPIs that will be the foundation for the 2025-2030 Strategic Plan.

COMMUNITY PLANNING CYCLE

It all starts with the three strategic pillars that provide the foundation for the investment and projects undertaken over the next five years to keep our community strong and vibrant. These goals balance the needs of an outstanding experience of living in the Grand for all residents, streamlined operation of the community, and ensuring our community remains strong well into the future.

What Happens Next?

We are still doing some cleanup on the objectives to make sure we have captured everything along with ensuring we can track the key measures. The big step over the next several months will be the Long Range Planning committee working closely with the other Advisory and Ad-Hoc Committees, the Board, and CAM on the next phase of the process which is Portfolio Planning. During this time, current projects and action plans are placed under the appropriate strategic objective. Additional proposed actions are identified and sequenced that provide the best

opportunity to achieve the three strategic goals and objectives. This roadmap of action plans and projects will cover approximately the next three years and this phase will be completed in time for the 2025 budget preparation.

Our strategic planning effort is a vital process in keeping The Grand a strong and vibrant community. It provides a common vision and set of goals for our future, along with objectives and an action plan roadmap for the next several years to make that vision a reality.

It's Hot Hot Hot and we're not talking about the Phoenix weather.  We’re talking about the Boomers Club at Grand.  We are one hot group of 732 members, at last count.  We never slow down, and we don't hibernate during these 'dog days of summer.'

The Grand Boomers are a fun-loving, young at heart, social club open to The Grand residents of any age. Our primary goal is to have a great time and meet other people living in our beautiful, active community. There are monthly events onsite and offsite, at restaurants, lounges, and elsewhere. Membership dues are only $10 per year.

Just to wet your appetite and tease your social calendar: check out the July summer dance (live band, no-host bar, photo shoot special).  Moving through the summer to our 'eat your fill'  Ice Cream social/Bunco night, monthly ladies luncheon, and the always popular Bowling and Pizza Lizard Lounge friendly competition (One of last year's top scorers included our own Stan-the-Man and his 5 mph bowling technique).

Did you think you'd have to hibernate during these next few h-o-t months?  Boomers never throw in the towel, succumb to summer doldrums, or tear out pages on the summer calendar.  We're still having fun, fun, fun. The more members, the more social ideas and hosts, the more activities.

DRAMA & COMEDY CLUB

THE GRAND’S “COMMUNITY THEATER”

The Grand Drama & Comedy Club is the Grand’s Community Theater.  We live our motto, “On Stage, Back Stage, A Place for Everyone” and welcome everyone to our club where everyone has a place.  Everyone is not an actor, and many members use their talents in costuming, make-up, marketing, and communication.  Do you like to redecorate?  You might be a wonderful set designer.  Are you a DIY kind of guy?  Or gal?  Join the construction crew building sets, or join a “painting party” to turn flats into garden scenes.  Smile!  Be an usher! We are especially in need of CONSTRUCTION/ BUILDING volunteers.  If you are handy with construction tools and enjoy creating, you are encouraged to join our construction crew.  There is nothing like seeing your work turn a plain stage into a Victorian mansion or hunting lodge in the Ozarks.  Join our team and enjoy creating our “places.” Not interested in learning a lot of lines but always had a desire to be on stage?  Our  Cabaret Players present 3 comedy performances a year by actors who use their scripts as part of their performance – no memorization needed.  Always a sell out, we perform in the Cimarron Theater.

We offer so many opportunities to learn new skills and to develop one’s creativity, and all for only $10. For information on all the many ways to participate “on stage or back stage”, click the QR code on this page or visit our webpage: granddrama.com.

FISHING CLUB

The Grand Fishing Club is dedicated to promoting both spin fishing and fly fishing. Club members take an active role not only in the promotion of fishing, but environmental sustainability as well. Many club members have years of fishing experience and have fished all over the United States, in Canada and other parts of the world. The club sponsors single day fishing trips locally to Lake Pleasant, Deadhorse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, Bartlett Lake east of Cave Creek and the Salt River. Multiday trips include the White Mountains, Lees Ferry near Flagstaff, the San Juan River in New Mexico near Farmington, Alaska and Canada. In Grand, the club helps support the viability of Lake Nine adjacent to the 9th Hole on the Desert Springs Golf Course as a fishery for all Grand residents and their families. The Grand Fishing Club meets the first Tuesday of

the month from October through April. Coupled with the various club fishing trips, members are also committed to making our community a much better place in which to live. Volunteer opportunities include Project Healing Waters in support of disabled veterans, the Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge program, the City of Surprise Adaptive Fishing program and the Phoenix VA Rehabilitation Hospital. In addition, we provide equipment and guidance to Grand residents to take their grandchildren fishing at Lake Nine. For more information, check out our website at www.scgfishing.weebly.com or to contact an administrative staff member please email infoscgfishing122@gmail.com.

RESIDENT FISHING IN THE GRAND

n Fishing in The Grand is limited to Grand residents or their guests. Guests must be accompanied by a Grand resident while they fish.

n The Grand lakes are private and therefore a state fishing license is not required.

n Fishing is only permitted on the non-golf side of Lake Nine (near Angela’s restaurant, the tennis courts and the dog parks) and the Upper Lake (near the Adobe Center). The red line on the image below denotes shorelines where fishing is permitted. Fishing is not permitted at any of the other Grand lakes. The lakes contain large-mouthed bass, sunfish/ bluegill, catfish, and carp. The lakes are stocked periodically with large-mouthed bass and sunfish/ bluegill.

n The Grand lakes are catch-and-release only to maintain an adequate fish stock for everyone’s enjoyment. Some tips to limit trauma to fish include:

• Use barbless hooks

• Use rubber nets

• Limit the time a fish is out of the water. Keep the fish wet.

• Carry hook removal devices. Pliers or hemostats work well.

• do not drop or allow the fish to touch the ground.

n Only single, barbless hooks may be used while fishing. Children 10 years of age and under may fish using worms. All others must use artificial lures and are not permitted to use live bait.

n Share a passion for fishing, fun and the outdoors? Visit the Grand Fishing Club’s website at scgfishing.weebly.com/for information about joining the Grand Fishing Club.

SOCIAL GAMES:

Social Games Charter Club is comprised of 5 Special Interest Groups. These interest groups are as follows: CHESS:

Tucked away in The Grand, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, we play chess and forget about everything else.  It’s true, while playing chess with us, you think only of chess, an inexpensive (no membership fees) and calorie-burning activity (yes, it’s true, you burn lots of calories playing chess).

You’ll need to know the basics as we won’t be spending too much time teaching, but we are welcoming and friendly to everyone, even if you aren’t Bobby Fischer! So, check us out, Mate.  Just show up, with or without a board and pieces, and be ready for a rewarding escape.  For dates and locations of play, call Marty at 203-979-1194, or Paula at 623-293-2884.   Next move is yours.  Let's play.

CRIBBAGE:

If you have played Cribbage in the past and would like to join us, please come by on Tuesday morning 8:15 to 8:30 to sign in. Play begins at 8:45 in the Pima Room.

Experience is necessary as this is a fast-moving game. We play 9 games and rotate each game to play a different opponent. Each game is timed for 17 minutes. If you are not done in that time frame, whoever is ahead scores the points for that game. We collect $4 from each player, which is paid out as prize money at the end of the session. Prize payouts are based on the number in attendance. Should you get “skunked”, you pay a quarter for every skunk. Please do not bring large bills as we cannot make change. Should you decide, you would like to join, you may play twice before paying our dues. If you would like to learn to play Cribbage, we suggest that you download the app and play at home to understand the basics and point counting as well as scoring of the game. We have no teaching tables available. For more info, email: jeward28@gmail.com

HAND & FOOT

We play every Tuesday at 1:00 and Friday at 6:00 in the Pima Room at Chaparral Center.  PLEASE ARRIVE 15 MINUTES EARLY FOR TABLE ASSIGNMENTS.

We play two games and draw cards for random partners each game. You will need $4. in quarters and $4 in bills for the two games. If you have your own cards (6 decks) and shuffler, please bring them. We are currently playing “Progressive Hand & Foot”. For a copy of the rules or questions, please contact Joy Kreick at joykreick@gmail.com

Come and play! We’re a friendly group and try our best to be inclusive no matter your skill level.

RUMMIKUB

The RUMMIKUB (rummi-tile) Boardgame – is a FUN game for 2-5 people per table (pronounced Rummey-cube). Join us for this tabletop game with tiles that have easy to see “real numbers” divided into 4 different color suits.

How to play: You try to get rid of all your tiles by forming numbers into runs of 3 or more tiles; or sets of 3 to 4 of a kind. The colors of the numbers are like card suits divided into 4 colors.

It’s been a top worldwide boardgame for over 70 years. Players love it since it contains components of Canasta, Gin Rummy, Bridge and Mahjong. It gently stimulates the brain while combining both luck with strategic thinking.

Meetings: We meet from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the Pima Room near the Grand Café at Chaparral Center and play on the: 1st and 3rd Thursdays and 2nd and 4th Saturdays.

Specific Play Dates:

Thursdays: 6/6; 6/20; 7/18; 8/15; Saturdays: 6/8; 6/22; 7/13; 7/27; 8/10; 8/24

We’re a friendly group and play a friendly game peppered with laughs and FUN! Call ahead for a FREE private lesson if you’re new, need a refresher, or are experienced!

We will try to place you with players on your level. Come learn the new Joker Rules and new variant called Rummi-Crossover that has increased the fun! You’re invited to join us no matter your skill level. For info: Barbara Powers 480-567-2533; Barbs.rum@ gmail.com.

STAMP COLLECTING

We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm in the Pima Room in the Chaparral Center. Meetings are always open to anyone interested in collecting postage stamps, whether to learn about stamp collecting, discover the worth of an existing collection or to donate a collection to a non-profit tax exempt foundation. Our friendly group will encourage your interest in stamps, whatever it may be. More info is available from Gene Trinks at 602339-8243 or gctrinks@cox.net.

There are four different seasons each year as well as different skill levels for annual and part-time residents. We have special events throughout the year. The Grand Tennis Club: “Big enough to meet lots of people, small enough to not get lost”.   Happy Hitting!

LET'S RAISE MONEY FOR OUR CHARITY! EVERYONE CAN PARTICIPATE!  WE RAISED $2000.00 LAST YEAR FOR THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE OF PHOENIX AND WE KNOW WE CAN DO BETTER THIS YEAR!

Please read and consider how you can participate and/or help!

We're only 160 days away from our 4th Annual Grand Slam Fall Charity Tennis Tournament.  The dates are Nov 7-10, 2024.  We will continue using the Fast4 Format with shorter sets since we will have round robin matches for women on Thursday, Nov 7th, men on Friday, Nov 8th, mixed doubles on Saturday, Nov 9th and all the finals will be on Sunday, Nov 10th.  We will be adding a few additional levels of play.  Both women, men and mixed will now have a 3.5/4.0 level.  You may be playing in a 4.0 club play level, but really feel you are a 3.5 so therefore you will play in that new 3.5/4.0 level.  Or you could play a 3.5 player with a 4.0 player.  All entries will be at the discretion of the tournament committee.  If you are currently playing 4.0 USTA or playing 4.0 in a competitive capacity, such as West Valley League, you need to play in the 4.0 level.  Please contact Sharon Villanueva with any questions.

We will be having our clothing resale event where all proceeds go to Ronald McDonald House.  PLEASE keep all those sport clothes from any sport, and put them in the clothing drop box in the sports room.  We will be collecting clothes, shoes, racquets, paddles, clubs, etc. from now until Nov.6th.  Please let all your friends know about our clothing resale event.   Last year we made $600 on this clothing resale.  Let's shoot for $800 this year!

If you want to play, WE WILL FIND YOU A PARTNER!!  We know all levels of women and men that want to play in this tourney but since it can only be 2 residents from Grand or 1 resident and 1 outside guest, there are a lot of people that want to play in it since it is such a fun tournament.  We will be offering an incentive if you have an outside player as your partner.  The more outsiders we can bring into the tournament, the more awareness we can bring to our Ronald McDonald Charity.

We will have raffle baskets as well so if you have anything you would like to donate or if you would like to make your own basket we welcome all donations! All proceeds go to Ronald McDonald House of Phoenix. Contact Sharon V at 303-946-8915.

We will be having our next Tournament Committee meeting onThursday, Sept. 12th at 5pm in the Sports Room, following the board meeting at 4pm.  If you are interested in being on this committee, please attend the meeting or contact Sharon Villanueva. Check the club website for upcoming events.

LGBTQ INTEREST GROUP

Contact(s): scg.lgbt@yahoo.com Website: scglgbt.com

Social Media: https://www.facebook.com/scglgbt Meeting Information: Meets frequently each month.

Description: The SCG LGBTQ invites residents to join us for a variety of social activities including dining out, theater, concerts, sporting events, etc. We are about making new friends, socializing and supporting one another. Residents and allies who are looking to connect with other like-minded members of our community are welcome to join. Grand’s LGBTQ Update…

Since we are in the middle of our Annual Membership Drive, it seems fitting to share a Group update with the Grand community. When we last wrote in The Grand LIFESTYLES, we were amid the Covid epidemic and like so many other groups, we struggled to remain connected but did so thanks to the wonders of Zoom. Also, like so many other clubs and organizations have since experienced, it’s been a challenge to regroup and simply “pick up where we left off”.

Ever since our inception 8 years ago this March, The Grand’s LGBTQ Interest Group’s purpose remains unchanged. Our intent was to “Create community and enhance the quality of life for our members and allies who are residents of Sun City Grand, together with our LGBTQ neighbors, seeking to be a positive presence in our region and throughout the State of Arizona”. Our Core Values are Community, Friendship, Equality, and Inclusion. A recent member survey revealed that the opportunity to meet like-minded people in a social setting is indeed achieved. We continue our numerous social activities on a regular basis; monthly Breakfast Club, potlucks, “Shout-Outs” (spontaneously organized activities), and occasional outings. Ongoingly, we’ve contributed to and participated in various community efforts; volunteering at both local Food Banks, Surprise’s MLK Day events, Dysart School System, One-in-Ten Youth Advocacy Program, etc. As in any citizen group, members also participate in various local faith-based organizations, community programs and committees, and arts organizations. We also support and remain connected with our neighboring West Valley LGBTQ Clubs and Groups as well.

We look forward to welcoming new friends in our shared community. So, if our Group sounds interesting to you, and you would like more information, find us on social media at www. facebook.com/scglgbt ; feel free to contact us on email at scg.lgbt@yahoo.com or through our website at: scglgbt.com .

From operating trains, painting buildings, decorating and landscaping, track maintenance, electrical service and repair, to public relations and more…. there is literally something for everyone. While most members own and operate their own trains, it is not a requirement to join the group. The Railroad Park is located near the tennis courts behind the Chaparral Center. Trains run on a regular schedule as posted at the Railroad Park and on our website (GrandCentralRailroad.info). GRAND REPUBLICAN INTEREST GROUP

Grand Republicans meets the third Saturday morning each month at Church on the Green (19051 N. RH Johnson Blvd, Sun City West 85375.) Doors open at 8:30, coffee and pastries available by 9, with meetings starting at 9:30. Guests are always welcome.

We believe that an informed electorate is a voting electorate: The more informed people are, the more likely they are to vote. We therefore invite candidates and election specialists to speak at our meetings. And open-minded guests are always welcome to attend. The $2 fee for non-members is being waived during this election season in lieu of voluntary contribution “tip jars” to help defray the costs of the meeting room and the pastries.

A capacity crowd of nearly 400 people, including many new faces, were on hand to see, hear and meet Kari Lake at our May 18 meeting. She was introduced by the nearly-as-popular Abe Hamadeh. They spoke last, allowing for questions and for photo opportunities. They were preceded at the podium primarily by election integrity specialist Seth Keshel. Seth is able to inject humor into an important message on what to anticipate from the left and how best to thwart their ballot shenanigans.

For our June 15 meeting (still ahead of us at press time) we wanted to give as many candidates as possible the opportunity to speak. This of course gives our members and guests the opportunity to see and hear as many candidates as possible before casting their ballots.

Speakers at our June 15 meeting included candidates for:

Maricopa County Treasurer:

John Allen, the Incumbent, who was first elected to the legislature in 2002; He served as Republican Majority Leader for 2017 and 2018. His four-year term as Treasurer ends in January 2025.

William Jay Lichtsinn, CPA, known to his friends as “Will Jay,” is a native Arizonan with a strong background in finance, accounting, and economics.

Maricopa County Superintendent:

Nickie Kelley, a teacher and small business owner, and a proven conservative leader born and raised in Arizona.

Shelli Boggs, a teacher, education leader and member of the Governing Board Elect District 9 EVIT (East Valley Institute of Technology.)

Mayor of the City of Surprise:

Aly Cline, a former Vice Mayor, first elected in 2020 to represent District 2 on the City Council. Ed Cunningham, a write-in candidate who has served as a firefighter and paramedic, an Engineer, an Information Officer, a Union rep and an Honor Guard Lead.

Our June 15 meeting was also to include: Rachel Mitchell, running for reelection as a Maricopa County Attorney, Christopher Escobedo, State Director for the Trump Campaign, and Rene Lopez, a candidate for the Corporation Commission.

Our July 20 meeting will feature nationally recognized polling expert Mike Noble, founder & CEO of Noble Predictive Insights, a nonpartisan public opinion polling, market research, and data analytics firm in Phoenix; and Mr. Justin Heap, an Arizona State Representative, and candidate for Maricopa County Recorder.

Our August 17 meeting will feature author, historian and retired professor of history Dr. Larry Schweikart. His many books include The Entrepreneurial Adventure, a history of American business (1999,) A Patriot's History of the United States (2006,) coauthored with Michael Allen and (also in 2006,) 48 Liberal Lies About American History.

Also speaking to us will be internationally renowned border intelligence expert and keynote speaker, Mr. Jaeson Jones.
