CURRENT EVENTS ROUNDTABLE

PHIL AXELROD

Meets 12 times on Tue 6/14- 8/30 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM FEE $30 Let's meet weekly to discuss the current events of the day. Be prepared to actively participate as we debate the pros and cons of the topics selected by the group. Each participant is encouraged to bring an item or topic currently in the public's eye. We are not limited to political items for discussion. At the beginning of each session, I will poll the group for topics. Once we have a complete list we will vote on all topics and the one garnering the most votes will be the first topic discussed at each meeting. Lively discussions will ensue, followed by resolutions. If you enjoy brisk and vigorous debate, this is the group for you.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS: THE GOLDEN AGE OF TELEVISION, PART 1

STEVE KATZ

Meets 10 times on Wed 6/22 - 8/24 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM FEE $30 This will be the first of 3 semesters of more than everything you ever wanted to know about 50’S TELEVISION—it will be the ultimate nostalgia class with more trivia that any retiree’s brain can handle. You think you know 50’s TV trivia? We’ll see! We’ll of course look at the classics with which you are all familiar: variety shows like Texaco Star Theater, Your Show of Shows and Toast of the Town; sitcoms like I Love Lucy, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best and The Honeymooners; early quiz shows like What’s My Line and I’ve Got a Secret and later big money quiz shows like The $64,000 Question and Twenty-One which ended in grand jury probes and congressional investigations; more westerns than you can imagine from Hopalong Cassidy and The Lone Ranger to Gunsmoke and Bonanza; and children’s programming, both animated and live action, like Howdy Doody, Disneyland, The Mickey Mouse Club and Rocky and Bullwinkle. But we’ll also consider a few series that probably most of you have never even heard of like Martin Kane, Private Eye and Rocky King, Inside Detective. You won’t just be teased by a few seconds of clips of each series but will see anywhere from a few minutes to as much as 25-30 minutes of many. For about half the series we will be playing Name that Tune to see if you can identify the series from its theme music; for just about every series, we will be asking trivia questions regarding the characters, the performers who played them and the like; and in about half the classes we will quiz you on some of your favorite commercials from the Golden Age.

60’S ROCK: CREAM

VINNIE BRUNO

Meets 1 time on Thur 8/4 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM FEE $15 Get out of the heat this summer and join Vinnie Bruno for the premiere of 60’s Rock: Cream, his newest lecture. Cream was formed in 1966 and is widely regarded as rock's first supergroup. We will journey with the band through their early days as members of many blues bands as they move toward the formation of Cream. Cream's music spanned many genres including hard rock (Sunshine of Your Love), psychedelic rock (White Room) to blues rock (Crossroads). Their album "Wheels of Fire" became the first platinum-selling double rock album in history. We will follow the band through their infamous internal band conflicts, to their farewell concert and to the trio's widely anticipated reunion tour in 2005. Cream was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.
