THIS ISSUE WILL NOT HAVE OUR CURRENT FINANCIAL RESULTS.
Our new Director of Finance, Vicki Taylor started on May 20, 2024 and we need to give her some time to understand our current financials and allow her time to pull the numbers together to provide a comprehensive report. The Association is very healthy, and we appreciate your understanding.
The 2024 budget was approved by the Board of Directors on October 26, 2023, with a tremendous amount of input from residents, advisory committees, and staff. A lot of hard work went into the budget to keep expenses and dues down.
Over the past year inflation has put tremendous upward pressure on the cost of everything –utilities, labor cost, supplies and maintenance services. Many community expenses have increased in double digit percentages while the dues increase approved for this budget year is less than 4%.
The Board was able to minimize the increase of the annual assessment resulting in an increase of just $5.50 a month or $66 a year. Below is a chart that shows where your assessment funds go. You will notice that 25% of the assessments go to fund our Reserve Fund (maintenance and replacement of current assets) and the remaining 75% towards running the day-to-day operations.
The annual assessment funding the reserves is extremely important to help keep property values in the community up. It enables us to keep the buildings painted, repair the parking lots, replace air conditioning units and fund the recently approved irrigation/bunker project on Desert Springs without having to do any special assessments like other communities have done.
Our goal is to keep you informed and run The Grand efficiently.

Get Ready for AI: The Smart Future of Community Associations
Ever wonder what the future holds for your community association? Well, get ready because Artificial Intelligence (AI) is about to shake things up in a big way! After attending the Annual Community Association Institute (CAI) annual conference, AI will be a big part of community associations going forward.
You know those repetitive tasks like paperwork and scheduling? AI is here to help! It can do all those jobs faster and easier, leaving more time for other important items. Plus, it can help save money by finding ways to be more efficient with things like energy and maintenance.
AI can also help our association make smarter decisions. By looking at data from
lots of sources, it can spot trends and predict problems before they even happen. That means fewer surprises and more happy residents!
Of course, we've got to be careful with all this fancy tech. Privacy and security are super important, so we've got to make sure AI plays by the rules and keeps your info safe.
But overall, AI will be a game-changer for community associations in the near future. It's like giving our community a superpower that helps us work smarter, live better, and build a brighter future together.
So, get ready, because the AI revolution is here to stay!
IMPROVE YOUR CHIPPING ON BERMUDA GRASS
Chipping in golf can be one of the most challenging aspects of the game, especially when dealing with different types of grass. Bermuda grass, known for its dense and wiry nature, presents its own set of challenges for golfers. However, with the right techniques and practice, mastering the art of chipping in Bermuda grass is entirely achievable.
UNDERSTANDING BERMUDA GRASS:
Bermuda grass is a warm-season grass commonly found on golf courses in the southwest region. Its fine texture and low growth habit make it ideal for golf greens, fairways, and tees. However, its dense growth pattern and tendency to grab the clubhead can make chipping a bit trickier compared to other grass types.
TECHNIQUES FOR CHIPPING IN BERMUDA GRASS:
1. CLUB SELECTION
Choosing the right club is crucial when chipping in Bermuda grass. Opt for a higher lofted club such as a sand wedge or a lob wedge to help get the ball up quickly and over the dense grass.
2. STANCE AND SETUP
Adopt a slightly open stance with your feet, hips, and shoulders aligned left of the target (for right-handed golfers). This setup encourages a shallow angle of attack, which is essential for chipping from Bermuda grass.
3. WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION
Keep the majority of your weight on your front foot (left foot for righthanded golfers) throughout the
chipping motion. This helps ensure a downward strike on the ball and promotes crisp contact.
4. BALL POSITION
Place the ball slightly back in your stance, towards the right foot for righthanded golfers (left foot for left-handed golfers). This helps ensure a descending blow onto the ball, allowing you to strike it cleanly without getting caught in the grass.
5. SHORT BACKSWING
Focus on making a compact backswing, with the clubhead traveling only a short distance. This helps control the trajectory and distance of the chip shot, preventing the club from getting caught in the dense grass.
6. ACCELERATE THROUGH IMPACT
Maintain a smooth and accelerating motion through the ball, ensuring crisp contact and consistent distance control. Avoid decelerating through impact, as this can lead to mishits and inconsistency.
7. FOLLOW THROUGH
Allow the club to continue its natural path after impact, with the hands finishing high and the clubhead pointing towards the target. A proper follow-through promotes a smooth and controlled chipping motion.
8. INTO THE GRAIN
For lies that are into the grain choke down on the club slightly allowing the club to hover over the grass at setup. This will allow the club to utilize the bounce more than the leading edge which can have the tendency to grab when playing shots into the grain. For a more advanced technique, hover the club with the heel slightly higher
off the ground than the toe. This will assist in keeping the heel from getting tangled in the wiry Bermuda grass.
PRACTICE TIPS:
1. SHORT GAME AREA
Spend dedicated time practicing your chipping on Bermuda grass in a short game area or practice green. Familiarizing yourself with different lies and distances will help build confidence and consistency.
2. VARIETY OF LIES
Practice chipping from various lies, including tight lies, fluffy lies, and downhill lies. This helps develop adaptability and ensures you're prepared for different situations on the course.
3. VISUALIZATION
Before each chip shot, visualize the trajectory and landing spot you intend to achieve. Mental imagery can help focus your mind and improve your ability to execute the shot effectively.
4. PRESSURE PRACTICE
Create pressure situations during practice by setting specific targets and consequences for missing. This simulates real on-course scenarios and helps build resilience under pressure.
Chipping in Bermuda grass requires a combination of technique, practice, and mental fortitude. By understanding the unique characteristics of Bermuda grass and implementing the right techniques, golfers can improve their chipping performance and lower their scores on the course. With dedication and perseverance, mastering the art of chipping in Bermuda grass is well within reach for any golfer.

AED: History, What’s at Grand, Responsibility of members
Allison Adams Fitness DirectorAutomated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are crucial life-saving devices designed to treat sudden cardiac arrest by delivering an electrical shock to the heart to restore a normal rhythm. The development of AEDs has revolutionized emergency response protocols, making it possible for nonmedical bystanders to provide critical intervention during cardiac emergencies. The history of AEDs dates back to the 1960s when portable defibrillators were first introduced for medical emergency use. Over the decades, these devices have become more sophisticated, user-friendly, and widely available.
In Arizona, the laws governing the use of AEDs are structured to encourage their widespread placement and use. Arizona Revised Statutes, specifically ARS 36-2264, mandates that any individual who uses an AED at the scene of an emergency is immune from civil liability provided they act as a reasonable, prudent person. This law is part of a broader legislative
framework that supports the deployment of AEDs in public places, including senior living communities, to enhance public safety. Here at the Grand, we have 20 AEDs placed around our common areas. When an AED is used, the AED user or witness(es) are responsible for filling out an AED Use Report Form. These forms can be found online at www.livegrandaz.com. Some of our clubs may keep printed copies of the form during club use. These forms need to be emailed to www.grandfitness@
livegrandaz.com, or margarita.ruiz@ livegrandaz.com. They can also be dropped off at the fitness center front desks. These forms are then submitted through our registered portal to the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS). Senior communities, particularly those in Arizona, have an elevated need for AEDs. The population in these communities typically includes older adults who are at a higher risk of cardiac events. The availability of AEDs in senior communities

not only provides a vital resource in the event of a cardiac arrest but also enhances the overall sense of security for residents and their families.
However, having an AED available is only part of the solution. Residents' responsibility regarding the use of AEDs involves several key aspects. First, they must be aware of the location of all AED units within their community. The list with locations is posted on our community website under the “Document Center”. A detailed map showing these locations will be out in late summer. Regular training sessions should be conducted to ensure that people are familiar with the operation of these devices. This training can empower the community, reducing hesitancy and improving response times during emergencies. I encourage members to get CPR/AED training. There are several options to do this online, or in person in and around Surprise.
Furthermore, maintenance of AEDs
is crucial. Senior communities should establish protocols to ensure that these devices are regularly checked and maintained according to the manufacturer's recommendations. This includes routine checks of battery life, electrode pad expiry, and overall device functionality. This is managed by the Grand Fitness department.
In conclusion, the integration of AEDs within Arizona's senior communities is a significant step toward safeguarding the health and well-being of its residents. The state's supportive legislation provides a legal safety net for users, promoting a proactive approach towards emergency preparedness. Education and maintenance are vital in maximizing the effectiveness of AEDs. Ultimately, the presence of these devices, combined with an informed and trained community, significantly boosts the chances of survival following cardiac incidents, underscoring the critical role of AEDs in saving lives.

A HELPING HAND AT GRAND SPECIAL EVENTS
Best known for vacation watch and evening patrol, C.H.A.P.S. also assists with events at The Grand. At garage sales, teams of up to eight volunteers help direct cars in and out as homeowners set up their spaces for the day. For this service, teams start at 3:00 a.m. and end at about 7:00 a.m.
C.H.A.P.S. volunteers are posted at the entrances and exits as well as at the back of the garage sale area to prevent parking in unauthorized areas. Safety is a major concern because of the large number of vehicles and people on foot before sunrise as preparations are under way. All cars must use the
designated entrance, where tickets are checked, and the designated exit. C.H.A.P.S. is also highly visible at Arts and Crafts fairs. At these events, teams of two volunteers help people cross Remington Drive safely in the two crosswalks. The C.H.A.P.S. yellow caps and hi-vi vests make occupied crosswalks easily visible to oncoming cars. This duty goes from 9:00 a.m. to about 2:00 p.m. with times divided among several teams. In addition to crosswalk safety, C.H.A.P.S. volunteers assist people in other ways such as answering questions and watching for anything out of the ordinary. The opportunity to provide these services for the community is one more reason to think about joining C.H.A.P.S.
C.H.A.P.S.
VACATION WATCH
If you would like C.H.A.P.S. to watch your house while you are away, complete a Vacation Watch Request Form and return the completed form to the Membership Office. Forms are available at the Palm Center Welcome Center, Membership Office and livegrandaz.com., where the forms can be completed and submitted online. Homeowners must be away for a minimum of two weeks and designate a keyholder to use this service. If an irregularity is found, the keyholder will be notified. Be certain to notify us if you return early by using the office phone number below. C.H.A.P.S. does not report homeowner violations to the Standards Office.
EVENING PATROL
Volunteers in Association vehicles patrol neighborhoods early in the evening to observe and report unusual activity. Open garage doors and street light outages are the main objectives. Patrols are also on the lookout for any type of activity or situation that is not normal.
TO VOLUNTEER
Residents of The Grand are welcome to join C.H.A.P.S. at any time of the year. You will receive lessons and field training before going out with a partner. With many evening patrol and vacation watch days every month, there is plenty of flexibility to match your schedule. If you are interested, call the C.H.A.P.S. office (623) 546-7553, ask any C.H.A.P.S. member for information, or come to our next meeting, which is 1:30pm at the Sonoran Plaza on Tuesday, June 25.

Grand’s Re-Landscape Plan
“Team Grand Landscape” Creating a Beautiful and Colorful Landscape
By Chris Bertrand Team Grand LandscapeGrand Board of Directors President, Rene Mitchell floated an idea last Fall to Jim Kauth, Grand’s Water Manager and Executive Director of Aquatrac. Tap knowledgeable and experienced residents to work beside Kauth and his staff, our landscape contractor, Gothic, Architectural Review Committee, plus the Grand Board and CAM to refresh, redesign and replant Grand’s common areas. All in an expeditious manner. Kauth chuckles he was initially skeptical of the proposed collaboration yet agreed.
The challenges were great. Not only were many components of the developer’s 25-year-old landscape aging out, several years of storms had taken a severe toll on Grand’s trees, followed by the loss of 2800+ trees, shrubs and cacti due to the scorching, 2023 summer.
Of particular concern was getting “ahead” of the curve, within a narrow window, as Grand is not alone in the need to replace or plant new landscape due to climate issues. For instance, the City of Phoenix initiated a massive re-treeing plan this year as
well. Our entire region is faced with these challenges. Grand’s plant orders were not to be for five to ten shrubs from Home Depot, or even 50 to 100. Local nurseries needed to grow over a thousand plants for replacement here at Grand, just this year!
Mitchell and Kauth agreed on a plan, and the process began. The collaboration needed to ramp up quickly, as new plants are best planted before June. Kauth and the Garden Club identified qualified, experienced residents to lead. All the parties stepped up, collaborated, and communicated freely to embrace our common goal: a healthy, beautiful, and color-filled landscape we are all proud of. Gothic Landscape contracted a planting team, separated from our maintenance team,to train to our needs and work under the watchful eyes of Gothic’s onsite managers, Keith Effertz and Larry Mendez.
Early brainstorming meetings and site visits quickly led to design, plant and materials lists, a review and reality check by Gothic and Aquatrac for suitability to our microclimate and soil,
resolution of irrigation issues, then to those important, plant nursery orders. Critical to the success of this project is selecting Arizona based nurseries to ensure the plants and trees are acclimated to our zone, especially with increasing climate swings.
The team worked always to make our landscape speak to our Grand priorities and “personality”. It should show residents, guests, and the outside community that ours is a community that:
1Creates a distinctive visual statement.
2Plans and invests for the future and Grand’s evolving “next chapter.”
3Prioritizes water thrifty, microclimate sensitive AND beautiful landscape.
4Prioritizes yearlong, colorful landscape with significant blooms dispersed throughout the year.
5Is creative and arts friendly, yet realistic and financially prudent.
6Creates an environment where native animals and birds can thrive.
7Utilizes plants completely compliant with the Arizona Department of Water Resources planting list. (ADWR Phoenix Plant List)
8Exhibits thriving plants within ADWR planting list AND Grand planting list (Grand Approved Plant List) to residents to easily visualize for their own homes.
9Spaces plants for full maturity size and professionally maintains to their natural shape and size.
10Enhances and utilizes existing hardscape and structures such as gazebos as lighted focal points.
11Maintains a safe/ minimal hazard access for landscape maintenance. continued on next page
continued from previous page
The first “test” phase has been planted. Boulders have been added. Ground cover stone has been refreshed. Residents can view the results on sections of the Sonoran, Desert Sage and Capitan Trails and includes butterfly and Cactus gardens. Plans are for the new landscapes
to have QR codes to inform residents on the growth habits and suitability of those plants, to allow residents to view the suitability of their own relandscape options in situ.
Members of all the teams, board and CAM representatives met together in late March to start phase two, the Bell and Grand Avenue entrances to
our community. That project is well underway, with old shrubs under removal now, and planting planned for May.
Please send a thumbs up to the Teams and Crews as you enter and exit Grand for their continued dedication, hard work, and commitment to making Grand’s next landscape chapter healthy, beautiful, colorful, water thrifty and flower filled!

WEEDS
Friendly Reminder From Standards
We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in The Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

2024-25 Board of Directors Goals
We know that Grand has limited resources and it is our responsibility to use them wisely. Goal setting helps us focus on key initiatives that support Grand today and in the future. Alignment with CAM and committee goals will help us complete these iniatives. When the Board, CAM Staff, committees and volunteers work together we can accomplish much.
In May, the Board of Directors finalized five goals for the 2024/2025 term. We will keep you, our residents, informed on how we’re doing. We are using a new application that tracks key performance indicators with due dates. Progress updates will be posted on the Grand website, in News of the Day and at Board meetings.
There is much work to be done so let’s work together to make this happen. How can you help? Please stay engaged with the community. Attend or watch the recorded Board and committee meetings. Respond to inquiries from committees and participate when being asked for your feedback. On behalf of the Board, we thank you in advance for your ongoing support.
Herearethegoals.
Adopt a 3-year Technology Information Roadmap and begin implementation
[Complete by Jan. 2025]
The Technology Information Roadmap fully supports the ongoing needs of Grand’s residents, optimizes business operations, and is aligned with the long term strategic plan. The Roadmap includes IT infrastructure modernization, back-office optimization, audio/ visual technology, enhancing the resident experience, IT roles/responsibilities/processes, and emerging technology assessment for long range planning. We want to acknowledge the Technology Advisory Committee for their work on defining the roadmap.
Adopt the 2025-2030 Strategic Plan
[Complete by Oct. 2024]
The purpose of the Strategic Plan is to understand the “big picture” view of the community as it exists today, and to visualize what it will look like in the next five years based on forecasted trends in the market, residents’ desires, and initiatives underway or proposed. Our plan includes the strategic community goals, action plans
René Mitchell President The Grandand initiatives, and key measures of performance over the plan time period. A well-developed and implemented Strategic Plan will enhance the community for both current and future residents. It provides financial stability and direction, speaks to the residents’ experiences in the community, and keeps us moving forward in an operationally efficient manner. We want to acknowledge the Long Range Planning Committee for their work on this plan.
Complete the Large Development Process ‘Discovery/Pre-Design Phase’ for projects listed on Community Planning Worksheet for years 2024-2026
[Complete by March 2025]
The Community Planning Worksheet provides a list of projects over several years, identifies funding resources and is aligned with the 5-year strategic plan. Quarterly, FAC, LRP, Finance and our Project Manager review the priorities to see if there is anything new on the horizon that would change our current plan. The Project Manager provides monthly updates on projects underway during the General Manager’s report at the Board Meeting held on the 2nd Thursday of the month and posts written reports on the Grand website.
Implement a marketing plan to inform residents and the public with proactive, timely and consistent messaging on Grand’s initiatives
[Complete by March 2025]
A marketing plan addresses external & internal stakeholders. A key component of the internal or community plan must address how to best keep the residents informed about Grand’s initiatives. The external or public plan positions The Grand community as a “top of mind,” preferred, active adult community for targeted prospects to visit and ultimately to buy a home and supports real estate agents to carry the message of the benefits and differentiators. Having a good marketing plan will help existing residents be more in tune with the community, and will help buyers decide if this community is right for them, which leads to happier residents for the long term.
Complete Grand’s Community Beautification Plan
[Complete by Dec. 2025]
Grand’s Beautification Plan includes four key areas. The goal is to have all completed by 2025 year end. This does not replace the annual contract for landscape maintenance funded in the annual operations budget.
I. Painting common area buildings using new color palette. In fall of 2023, the new color palette was adopted. The Cimarron complex was the first project completed. The remaining common areas will be prioritized and funded with Reserve Funds. Prioritization considers ‘useful life’ and construction/renovation plans while minimizing disruption in the community.
II. Completing turf removal to meet Arizona Department of Water Resources [ADWR] threshold in the common areas and golf courses. We moved up the completion of the 5-year plan by targeting a Q1 2025 completion. When the plan is finished, Grand will be compliant with the ADWR regulations and will remove Grand from the ADWR list of targeted communities.
III. Redesign landscape with drought tolerant, colorful plants and rock scape; replace missing landscape and rock in the common areas Plants have a lifespan, and after nearly thirty years, many of our plants no longer look healthy. This plan restores the landscape lost over the past years and the thousands of plants lost in the 2018 and 2023 summer heat, as well as those reaching their end of life. We want to acknowledge the support from a landscape working group comprised of Garden Club members, Gothic Landscape, Jim Kauth and CAM staff.
IV. Install new single head controllers and up to date sprinkler heads to maximize water efficiency. As part of our efforts to conserve water, we want to do the most efficient job possible of utilizing our precious water. This change does that in conjunction with repopulating our landscaped areas.

ACTIVE GRAND RESIDENTS
Former 2007 Grand Pickleball Board member, Nancy Eckart, has had a book written about her younger years growing up in Yosemite Valley titled “The Yosemite Valley Girl –A Memoir of the Early life of Nancy Eckart” by author Jeanne Vander Ploeg. Though Nancy no longer plays pickleball, her husband, Bob "The Rabbit" who turns 87 this year still plays three times a week. You can usually find him beating up on his group every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Nancy, who is also in her 8th decade of life, has always been an avid hiker and now devotes all of her energy in that direction. Many of you may know Nancy through the hiking club or from seeing her bright smile behind the counter at the golf course snack shops.
To quote from the description, "She [Nancy] summited Half Dome at age 6, before she was even tall enough to reach the cables. She went on several week-long burro trips with her father and two younger brothers, where they fished for their dinners. Ansel Adams was a family friend and at the start of his photographic career he came into the Valley’s elementary school and chose Nancy as the 'daughter' in a typical family of 4 for several of his commercial shoots."
Let's all give Nancy a round of applause for her accomplishments and for a life lived quite literally on the edge!

QUESTIONS FORUM WITH PASTOR CHIP
SHORT, PASTOR CHIP
Meets 3 times on Th 6/6/24 - 6/20/24
9 AM - 10:30 AM | $15 | Navajo
I suspect that a lot of people have honest questions about God, the Bible or Christianity that they have never had the right person to ask. They might be afraid they will be perceived as argumentative or ignorant. I believe these questions deserve to be asked, and I will do my best to answer them. I am not claiming to have an answer to everything, nor do I claim to speak for God, nor do I think that every Christian agrees with me. I believe good people can discuss difficult questions without disrespect. And it might help us when we most need it. Consider writing your question out in advance, so that your phrasing is as succinct as possible. No question is off the table:
Hasn't science disproved God?
What about Christians who behave badly?
Why is the world such an evil place?
Aren't all religions alike?
Why did God allow tragedy to come to my life?

The Grand Drama & Comedy Club is the Grand’s Community Theater. We live our motto, “On Stage, Back Stage, A Place for Everyone” and welcome everyone to our club where everyone has a place. Everyone is not an actor, and many members use their talents in costuming, make-up, marketing, and communication. Do you like to redecorate? You might be a wonderful set designer. Are you a DIY kind of guy? Or gal? Join the construction crew building sets, or join a “painting party” to turn flats into garden scenes. Smile! Be an usher! We are especially in need of CONSTRUCTION/ BUILDING volunteers. If you are handy with construction tools and enjoy creating, you are encouraged to join our construction crew. There is nothing like seeing your work turn a plain stage into a Victorian mansion or hunting lodge in the Ozarks. Join our team and enjoy creating our “places.” Not interested in learning a lot of lines but always had a desire to be on stage? Our Cabaret Players present 3 comedy performances a year by actors who use their scripts as part of their performance – no memorization needed. Always a sell out, we perform in the Cimarron Theater.
We offer so many opportunities to learn new skills and to develop one’s creativity, and all for only $10.

Many club members have years of fishing experience and have fished all over the United States, in Canada and other parts of the world. Multiday trips include the White Mountains, Lees Ferry near Flagstaff, the San Juan River in New Mexico near Farmington, Alaska and Canada. In Grand, the club
helps support the viability of Lake Nine adjacent to the 9th Hole on the Desert Springs Golf Course as a fishery for all Grand residents and their families. The Grand Fishing Club meets the first Tuesday of the month from October through April. Coupled with the various club fishing trips, members are also committed to making our community a much better place in which to live. Volunteer opportunities include Project Healing Waters in support of disabled veterans, the Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge program, the City of Surprise Adaptive Fishing program and the Phoenix VA Rehabilitation Hospital. In addition, we provide equipment and guidance to Grand residents to take their grandchildren fishing at Lake Nine. RESIDENT FISHING IN THE GRAND
n Fishing in The Grand is limited to Grand residents or their guests. Guests must be accompanied by a Grand resident while they fish.
n The Grand lakes are private and therefore a state fishing license is not required.
n Fishing is only permitted on the non-golf side of Lake Nine (near Angela’s restaurant, the tennis courts and the dog parks) and the Upper Lake (near the Adobe Center). The red line on the image below denotes shorelines where fishing is permitted. Fishing is not permitted at any of the other Grand lakes. The lakes contain large-mouthed bass, sunfish/bluegill, catfish, and carp. The lakes are stocked periodically with large-mouthed bass and sunfish/bluegill.
n The Grand lakes are catch-and-release only to maintain an adequate fish stock for everyone’s enjoyment. Some tips to limit trauma to fish include:
• Use barbless hooks
• Use rubber nets
• Limit the time a fish is out of the water. Keep the fish wet.
• Carry hook removal devices. Pliers or hemostats work well.
• Limit fighting time while landing a fish.
• Do not drop or allow the fish to touch the ground.
n Only single, barbless hooks may be used while fishing. Children 10 years of age and under may fish using worms. All others must use artificial lures and are not permitted to use live bait.
n Share a passion for fishing, fun and the outdoors? Visit the Grand Fishing Club’s website at scgfishing.weebly.com/for information about joining the Grand Fishing Club.

You’ll need to know the basics as we won’t be spending too much time teaching, but we are welcoming and friendly to everyone, even if you aren’t Bobby Fischer! So, check us out, Mate. Just show up, with or without a board and pieces, and be ready for a rewarding escape. For dates and locations of play, call Marty at 203-979-1194, or Paula at 623-293-2884. Next move is yours. Let's play.
CRIBBAGE
If you have played Cribbage in the past and would like to join us, please come by on Tuesday morning 8:15 to 8:30 to sign in. Play begins at 8:45 in the Pima Room. Experience is necessary as this is a fastmoving game.
We play 9 games and rotate each game to play a different opponent. Each game is timed for 17 minutes. If you are not done in that time frame, whoever is ahead scores the points for that game. We collect $4 from each player, which is paid out as prize money at the end of the session. Prize payouts are based on the number in attendance. Should you get “skunked”, you pay a quarter for every skunk. Please do not bring large bills as we cannot make change. Should you decide, you would like to join, you may play twice before paying our dues. If you would like to learn to play Cribbage, we suggest that you download the app and play at home to understand the basics and point counting as well as scoring of the game. We have no teaching tables available. For more info, email: jeward28@gmail.com
HAND & FOOT
We play every Tuesday at 1:00 and Friday at 6:00

We are currently playing “Progressive Hand & Foot”. For a copy of the rules or questions, please contact Joy Kreick at joykreick@gmail.com. Come and play! We’re a friendly group and try our best to be inclusive no matter your skill level.
RUMMIKUB
The RUMMIKUB (rummi-tile) Boardgame – is a FUN game for 2-5 people per table (pronounced Rummey-cube). Join us for this tabletop game with tiles that have easy to see “real numbers” divided into 4 different color suits.
How to play: You try to get rid of all your tiles by forming numbers into runs of 3 or more tiles; or sets of 3 to 4 of a kind. The colors of the numbers are like card suits divided into 4 colors. It’s been a top worldwide boardgame for over 70 years. Players love it since it contains components of Canasta, Gin Rummy, Bridge and Mahjong. It gently stimulates the brain while combining both luck with strategic thinking.
Meetings: We meet from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the Pima Room near the Grand Café at Chaparral Center and play on the: 1st and 3rd Thursdays and 2nd and 4th Saturdays.

We will try to place you with players on your level. Come learn the new Joker Rules and new variant called Rummi-Crossover that has increased the fun! You’re invited to join us no matter your skill level.

GRAND’S LGBTQ INTEREST GROUP UPDATE…
Since we are in the middle of our Annual Membership Drive, it seems fitting to share a Group update with the Grand community. When we last wrote in The Grand LIFESTYLES, we were amid the Covid epidemic and like so many other groups, we struggled to remain connected but did so thanks to the wonders of Zoom. Also, like so many other clubs and organizations have since experienced, it’s been a challenge to regroup and simply “pick up where we left off”.
Ever since our inception 8 years ago this March, The Grand’s LGBTQ Interest Group’s purpose remains unchanged. Our intent was to “Create community and enhance the quality of life for our members and allies who are residents of Sun City Grand, together with our LGBTQ neighbors, seeking to be a positive presence in our region and throughout the State of Arizona”. Our Core Values are Community, Friendship, Equality, and Inclusion. A recent member survey revealed that the opportunity to meet likeminded people in a social setting is indeed achieved. We continue our numerous social activities on a regular basis; monthly Breakfast Club, potlucks, “Shout-Outs” (spontaneously organized activities), and occasional outings. Ongoingly, we’ve contributed to and participated in various community efforts; volunteering at both local Food Banks, Surprise’s MLK Day events, Dysart School System, One-inTen Youth Advocacy Program, etc. As in any citizen group, members also participate in various local faith-based organizations, community programs and committees, and arts organizations. We also support and remain connected with our neighboring West Valley LGBTQ Clubs and Groups as well. We look forward to welcoming new friends in our shared community. So, if our Group sounds interesting to you, and you would like more information, find us on social media at www.facebook.com/scglgbt ; feel free to contact us on email at scg.lgbt@yahoo.com or through our website at: scglgbt.com .

While most members own and operate their own trains, it is not a requirement to join the group.

GRAND REPUBLICAN INTEREST GROUP
Grand Republicans meets the third Saturday morning each month at Church on the Green (19051 N. RH Johnson Blvd, Sun City West 85375.) Doors open at 8:30, coffee and pastries available by 9:00, with meetings starting at 9:30. Guests are always welcome. There is a $2 fee for non-members to help defray the cost of the meeting room, and a tip jar is available to help pay for the pastries and donuts. We are especially reaching out to “right-minded” and open-minded Independents this election season.
At press time, we were eagerly awaiting our May 18 meeting, featuring the very popular Kari Lake, a leading candidate to represent Arizona in the U.S. Senate. Kari was to be introduced by Abe Hamadeh (House of Representatives candidate.) Both Kari Lake and Abe Hamadeh are running as MAGA, Trumpendorsed, America first candidates. To accommodate a larger attendance, the first few rows of seats would be “stadium style,” followed by the usual circular tables, with places for nine people instead of eight. Other scheduled speakers for May were:
Our three State representatives: Janae Shamp (Senate,) and Austin Smith and Steve Montenegro (State House of Representatives.)
Seth Keshel, an election integrity specialist, bringing an important message to help us anticipate and thwart the Liberals’ ballot shenanigans, and Ms. Shelli Boggs, speaking as a candidate for the Maricopa County School District.
Speakers schedule for our June 15, 2024 meeting include:
Rachel Mitchell, endorsed by Debbie Lesko, to speak as a candidate for County Attorney.
Wendy Rogers, Air Force veteran, entrepreneur, and Arizona State Senator representing Legislative District 6. Wendy is described on line as a conservative, America First, pro-Trump member of the State Senate. She is running for reelection. Jaeson Jones, described as "an internationally renowned border intelligence expert and a keynote speaker, with decades of experience saving lives across the southwest.” This is certainly someone that we in Arizona need to hear from.
Nickie Kelley, wife, mother, small business owner and teacher, to speak as a candidate for Maricopa County Superintendent.
We are meeting every month all through this presidential election year. Our July 20 meeting precedes the July 30 Arizona Primary Election by ten days. Many Seniors and most young conservative broadcasters agree that this is the most important election of our lifetimes. If you have ever thought of getting more involved and better informed, this is the time!

Arizona may be known for its endless sunshine, but you can also make a splash this summer by visiting some of the water parks the destination has to offer. From playful and family friendly water slides to Zen and relaxed lazy rivers, there is a water experience for everyone to have fun in the sun.
