DO YOU HAVE A SERVICE ANIMAL? “Service Animal” is defined by the ADA and Arizona Statutes as dogs that are individually trained to perform tasks for the benefit of a disabled person. A disabled person accompanied by their “service animal” must be allowed access to all our facilities and common areas where the public is generally allowed to go.
cotinuted from page 7 The Board of Directors approved The Granite Falls Mandatory Turf Reduction Project, Pricing and timing. Follow up after Budget approval; • The Board of Directors approved the recommendations of the following edits to the SCG Interest Group Guidelines – Remove “approval will not be granted to group which require affiliation in national, state or regional organizations as a precondition for membership.”; • The Board of Directors approved the proposed changes to the Chartered Club Policies and procedures: o 2.21 Club Financials – moved due date from February to the last Friday in January o 12.0 Club Specific Additions to the Board approved CCP & P’s – clarify approval process o 13.0 Club Specific Rules – clarify approval process;
If yours is a “service animal,” you are welcome to bring your animal to the Membership Office for an ID card. You would then be able to show the ID card everywhere you take your “service animal” in Sun City Grand. We do not want to know what your disability is, but you must identify a specific task your “service animal” is trained to perform for disability. An ID Card for your “service animal” is certainly not required – we are simply offering it for free as a courtesy to our disabled residents. 8
• The Board of Directors approved Purchase Request 22-8464-RF – Cimarron Pool Building - Replace countertop tiles and cabinets in the amount not to exceed $12,416;
• The Board of Directors approved Purchase Request 22-002-OP – Space Planning Consultant in the amount not to exceed $107,400; • the Board of Directors approved Purchase Request 22-006-OP – Village Center – Purchase six (6) trash receptacles for the Village Center in the amount not to exceed $10,524.00; • The Board of Directors approved the following proposed changes that are part of the comprehensive revision-in-progress of the Residential Design Guidelines: 1. To permit covered but not enclosed patios to extend into the rear yard not closer than ten (10) feet from the rear lot line (i.e., may extend a maximum of five (5) feet into the rear building setback area). 2. To permit, with significant, detailed requirements and limitations, the RDG-regulated construction of solid walls that may extend in height up to the underside of the cover, on rear patio areas.

MONTHLY UPDATES B O A R D
P R E S I D E N T
BOARD GOALS Bob Aiken President Sun City Grand Board of Directors
D
uring the past few weeks, your Board of Directors has been working on the Top Five Goals we want to accomplish in the coming months. I want everyone to understand what we are working on and why.
THE “TOP FIVE” Project Management: It has become apparent to everyone that we need a Project Management Team or Person. We agreed that Grand would be better served by a Management Team to provide advice and support from a collection of qualified professionals trained in multiple areas of planning, design, and construction. We recently hired the Project Management Firm, Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) and will be identifying the initial scope of work expected from them in the coming weeks. Most importantly, they will provide added resources as we complete the renovation of the Falls Restaurant. n Successful Launch of the Falls Restaurant: This project has taken much more time and resource than anyone anticipated. We are meeting with the management team of Unidine in late May and will be agreeing on a work plan which is essential for a successful opening. Completion of construction is only one component. Management, staffing, menu options, and training will be fixed on a timeline. We are looking forward to providing every resident an enjoyable n
experience and great food at The Falls. n Gain Alignment of Priorities of Future Projects: Each year in an open meeting the Board of Directors reviews suggestions from the LongRange Planning Committee and agrees on what planned projects should be priorities for the upcoming year or two. Balancing the needs of our community and the available resources is key to begin defining the scope of work, as well as the roles and responsibilities to accomplish the task. n Accelerate our Water Management and Conservation Plan: As the State of Arizona begins to increase restrictions on elements pertaining to water conservation, we need to plan and prepare for meeting those challenges. We will be working with our General Manager, Rod Rankin and our Water Manager, Jim Kauth to further that process. Education and examples of steps to be taken will be our initial emphasis. Being proactive now will lessen the need to be reactive in the future. n Increase Transparency and Focus on Culture: Grand has well established Values that support our Mission and Vison statements. We need to gain alignment with those Values every day amongst Board Members, Residents, and Staff. We will work hard to be inclusive and deliver on meaningful communications to keep all residents informed and supportive of those stated Values. Although it is not a “goal” per se, each Board Member will play an active role in providing oversight to the different committees that support the success of our initiatives. The major assignments are as follows:
Grand Lifestyles | June 2022 | suncitygrand.com
❍ Alan
Meyer and Bob Towe will take the lead on the Successful Opening of the Falls Restaurant. Alan has been working with Unidine from the very beginning and both will be stewards ensuring shared success for Grand and Unidine. Their efforts will also include leading the Food and Beverage Ad Hoc Committee as the committee works with Unidine on the plan for the Falls Restaurant. ❍ Carol White will be working with the Technology Ad Hoc Committee. Our goal is to improve coordination with staff to make the current website more resident friendly, informative and functional as well as looking to the future for additional tech-related projects. They will assist with the resident app which will roll out later this year. ❍ Chris Gibson will be working with staff to communicate a successful execution of the Branding Strategy as we envelop marketing strategies to attract our future residents. ❍ Chris will also be working with Long Range Planning (LRP) as they finalize our Community Master Plan, primarily dealing with proper allocation and utilization of current space and confirming any needs for future expansion. ❍ Concordance: This project answers the need of having our governing documents be consistent with each other. A real challenge. Rene Mitchell, our Vice President, will lead this effort. ❍ Village Center II: Tony Spata will become the Board’s point person on completion of the renovation continued on page 11 9
FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS
AERIFICATION:
SOMETIMES IT’S GOOD TO VENT Presented by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America
Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations
It’s a perfect, sunny morning and you’ve just reached the first green in regulation. You feel great and you know you’re within birdie range. Then, you see them, those little holes in the green. Arrggh! They’ve just aerified the course, and it’s going to ruin your round, right? Well, maybe not. Consider the fact that PGA TOUR legend Tom Watson shot a sizzling record 58 at his then-home course, Kansas City Country Club, just days after the greens had been aerified. Consider also that aerification is merely a short-term disruption that has long-term benefits for the course. When you see them, remember that without those little holes, the greens would eventually die. Preventative maintenance is an integral part of successful golf course management. Golfers view aerification as an inconvenience that takes the greens out of play for a day, pulling cores from the greens and leaving holes that can affect putting for many days before healing. To add insult to injury, aerification is best done in many parts of the country during mid-summer, at the height of the playing season and when most greens are in prime condition. But a golfer needs to understand how important aerification is to producing healthy turf. Aerification achieves three important objectives. It relieves soil compaction, it provides a method to improve the soil mixture around the highest part of a green’s roots and it reduces or prevents the accumulation of excess thatch. Like so many things, the quality of a good putting green is more than skin
10
deep. In fact, the condition of a green has a lot to do with what goes on below the surface. In order for grass to grow at 3/16-inch, it must have deep, healthy roots. Good roots demand oxygen. In good soil, they get the oxygen from tiny pockets of air trapped between soil and sand particles. Over time, the traffic from golfers’ feet (as well as mowing equipment) tends to compact the soil under the putting green – particularly when the soil contains a lot of clay. When soil becomes compacted, the air pockets on which the roots depend are crushed, and the roots are essentially left gasping for air. Without oxygen, the grass plants become weaker and will eventually wither and die. Aerification is a mechanical process that creates more air space in the soil and promotes deeper rooting, thus helping the grass plants stay healthy. In most cases, it’s done by removing ½-inch cores (those plugs you sometimes see near a green or in fairways) from the compacted soil, allowing for an infusion of air and water that brings a resurgence of growth. The spaces are then filled with sand “topdressing” that helps the soil retain air space and makes it easier for roots to grow downward. Older greens often are constructed of soils with significant amounts of silt, clay and fine organic particles that are prone to compaction. Filling aerification holes with sand improves drainage and resists
compaction. The periodic introduction of sand to a green’s top layer can over time, avoid or postpone expensive rebuilding or renovation of greens. Finally, growing of turf adds to a layer of organic matter on the surface. This layer, called thatch, is an accumulation of dead stems, leaves and roots. A little organic matters makes for a resilient green, but too much invites diseases and insects. Topdressing with sand can prevent thatch buildup, and aerification is one of the best ways to reduce an existing layer and prevent an excess of thatch from becoming established. Other aerification techniques use machines with “tines” or knives that simply poke holes through the soil profile. A new technique even uses ultra high-pressure water that’s injected through the soil profile to create small holes that relieve some compaction but heal quickly. There are many types of aerifying machines with different attachments that address different problems in the various stages of the life of a green. So the next time you’re ready to scream when the aerifiers are brought on the course, remember that a little preventative maintenance produces the best greens over the long haul. The bottom line is that aerification is a necessary practice. But before you curse the superintendent for ruining your day, just think of Tom Watson.

continued from page 9 of the Village Center, continuing the work completed last summer to include the fountain and improvement to the north side of Remington Blvd. ❍ The last major project is planning and preparing for the Renovation of Angela’s Restaurant and the Desert Springs “Social Area”. Rene, Carol
and I will lead that process as we work with our golf staff to plan improvements at Desert Springs in support of increased socialization opportunities for golf related activities, tying those opportunities with improved services from the new restaurant. It is imperative that design and pre-build budgets are
prepared before we have access to the facility. This will enable us to complete the project in a more timely manner and on budget. There will certainly be new challenges as we move through the year, but these are our focus points and should keep your Board of Directors busy working on your behalf.

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER
Count Your Steps
Allison Adams Fitness Manager
Our summer season is a great time to visit Sun City Grand Fitness. With a number of our winter residents leaving for the warm season, there’s more room to move around. We all know it gets hot this time of year, really hot. It’s important, however, to keep moving and take care of our health. We encourage using the indoor pool for water walking or other water resistance training. We offer energetic and effective aqua aerobic classes to improve your strength and cardiorespiratory health.
If it’s too hot for you outside, stop in at Adobe and meet your step goal by walking our second-floor walking track. Great landscape views while building bone density, improving balance, and heart health while walking. We’ve added a digital clock so you can monitor your speed while moving around the track.
Need a Trainer? If you’ve been away from physical activity for a while or are looking to up your fitness goals, we strongly encourage purchasing sessions with one of our many certified personal trainers for personalized guidance and customized programming to meet your needs. If you are preparing for a joint replacement, or trying to manage physical activity with prescribed medications, a personal trainer may be able to help. We provide information about our trainers through handouts you can find at the fitness center front desks, and at the front entrance to each of the aerobic studios.
Free orientations for gym equipment are still scheduled throughout the summer. We’ve added the June schedule on this page, or you can stop by the fitness centers to see the schedules and sign up. Orientations are offered in groups up to 6 people.
Aquafest Returns We are excited to host Aquafest
again this summer. This year it will be in August. There is more information to come. In late July, we are launching a fitness challenge. We’ll start the challenge with an opening event
in the Sonoran Plaza. Keep your eyes open for email blasts and the next issue of the Grand Lifestyles magazine. As a reminder, regardless of where and how you choose to get your physical activity, please stay hydrated. There is plenty of resources in magazines and online for proper hydration. For basic recommendations, try to get at least 80 oz. of water a day. Download a water tracker app like My Water on your phone, or talk to your doctor about more specific water intake prescriptions that meets your needs.
Enjoy your summer

We are looking for SCG men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. Call (CAM) 623-546-7432 or the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us! You may also find more information about C.H.A.P.S. (including an application form to join) at suncitygrand.com – volunteer central – C.H.A.P.S. Resident Patrol
Do Not Read This Article...
Submitted by Dennis Hanscom C.H.A.P.S. member
Now that I have your attention, I would like to share with you a very alarming fact. But first I would like to tell you the volunteer group known as C.H.A.P.S.* provides two main functions: a night time service called Evening Patrol and an early morning service called Vacation Watch. Both of these services are explained in detail later in this article. Now for the alarming fact. During the month of March our Evening Patrol group stopped at 181 homes with open garage doors. With the summer heat upon us we will likely see that number increase. Opening a garage door with an interior temperature of 100 degrees to let the heat out into an exterior temperature of 109 simply does not work. Our patrol group is instructed to stop for any open door that is even only open as little as 18 inches. We do this for the safety of you, our neighbors. We are not the garage door police. We stop, inform the homeowner, and go on to the next open door. If we do not find a homeowner with an open-door home, we are obligated to report that address to the Surprise police so they can make a courtesy call to ensure the safety of the homeowner. So, please close those doors even when out for an evening stroll. Because of this high number of open doors (181) in March I researched the C, C, and R’s that we as homeowners all have
copies of and, under the Use Restrictions section it reads: Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions For Sun City Grand Exhibit “C” Use Restrictions Page 3 (3) Prohibited Conditions. The following shall be prohibited within the Properties. (n) Open garage doors. Garage doors shall remain closed at all times except when entering and exiting the garage, or as otherwise authorized by the Board; Thank you in advance for understanding that our volunteers serve only to keep all of us safe in the SCG community. (This article will be reprinted in a fall Lifestyles publication to ensure those lucky homeowners who were able to escape the summer heat will receive the same informative message.) Now for the duties of your C.H.A.P.S.* volunteers:
VACATION WATCH When residents are away from home for two weeks or more, they are encouraged to fill out a Vacation Watch form which is available in the Welcome Center and the Membership Office at the Palm Center, as well as online at suncitygrand.com. Completed forms are to be returned to the Membership Office in the Palm Center.
Two criteria are required for homeowners to use this program: (1) homeowner must be away for a minimum of two weeks; (2) a keyholder must be identified on the request form. C.H.A.P.S.* volunteers will walk around the home checking for unlocked doors, unlocked or broken windows, etc. The goal is to make the house look occupied. When an irregularity is found, the designated keyholder will be notified. C.H.A.P.S.* does not report homeowner violations to the Standards Office.
EVENING PATROL
During evening hours, volunteers patrol our streets in Association vehicles to observe and report unusual activity. The volunteers look for breaches of security such as open garage doors, suspicious vehicles and/or people. Street light outages and road hazards will be reported to the proper authorities.
TO VOLUNTEER We are actively looking for new volunteers. All residents are welcome. We will provide classroom and field training. There are two-person patrols where you select your days/evenings to volunteer and you select how many times each month you wish to volunteer. Call Carol Murr (CAM) 623-546-7432 or the C.H.A.P.S.* office (623) 546-7553 if you may be interested in joining us. Our next meeting is Tuesday, June 28th at 1:30 p.m. in the Palms/Palo Verde Room at the Sonoran Plaza. All homeowners are welcome to join us.

GOLF CART SECURITY OPTIONS The recent spate of theft of golf carts has caused some residents to question what can be done about this. Obviously, we can’t stop thieves, so the practical option is to try to make our golf carts more secure from theft.
THE COMPLEX— Electronic
Beyond these measures, we get into the fancy electronic solutions. There are two types – near field (Bluetooth, wi-fi, etc) and GPS (satellite). Like with most electronics there are pluses and minuses to each. They work by “planting” a signaling device in your places—go for the brightly lit, welltraveled spots—the thieves don’t want cart, so that you can find it wherever it is – similar to the built-in device “find your phone” that is now to be questioned! common on our smart phones. There are a variety n Always put your cart in the garage at of types of these devices. Tile makes one and Apple night and after use has their “tags”. Here is the link to the tile app: n Carry good insurance—it is cheap! https://www.thetileapp.com/en-us/ and here is the link to information on the apple product: https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=68t15_CJPbM And A quick internet search will locate all kinds there are others as well. of simple, inexpensive devices or varying quality and effectiveness. Remember, the idea is simply to get the thief to go to the next cart! Here are some of your choices:
Thieves are going to take the simplest or the most lucrative route – so the more valuable, less secure, your cart, the more of a target you become. You want them to bypass your cart for one that hasn’t taken security precautions.
THE SIMPLE
There are a couple of very easy things we can do: n Don’t leave your key in your cart n Don’t leave valuables like golf clubs on your cart n Don’t park it in dark or hard to see
THE NEXT LEVEL—Mechanical The next level of security has to do with actual security attached to the cart. All manufacturers make locks and keys that are common to all carts, so you have to secure them beyond that simple device. Some manufacturers do offer custom keys.
Many of these types of devices have instructive videos to go with them: Here is an example—https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=s3l_SlraOTQ – installing bar to steering wheel. 22
You simply hide your device somewhere on the cart, download the app and you are ready. The “catch” is that your “stolen cart” must be somewhere where the signal from your device can be transmitted to your app on your PC, phone or watch. If your cart is not near a service (another equipped phone or wi-fi) that will “read” the location, you are sunk. Tile offers a community feature that if your tile comes near another tile user, that tile will transmit your tile’s information to you. Apple has a similar feature. The good part is that there is no monthly cost for these set-ups. A low one-time cost and that’s it. The top-of-the-line product is a GPS tracker – if your cart is in sight of a satellite, your tracker will transmit the information to you. They can also, of course, track people, dogs, ATVs, and more. They basically work like the shorter-range devices above, but they use a different device (there are many) and you may have to subscribe to a tracking service to ensure that your tracker will be tracked when you need it. Here is an article that covers some of the better consumer level apps and their prices. https://agiletech.vn/best-free-gpslocation-tracking-app-2021/ That’s the basics of how to keep your cart safe in Sun City Grand. Safe Travels!

Each participant is encouraged to bring an item or topic currently in the public's eye. We are not limited to political items for discussion. At the beginning of each session, I will poll the group for topics. Once we have a complete list we will vote on all topics and the one garnering the most votes will be the first topic discussed at each meeting. Lively discussions will ensue, followed by resolutions. If you enjoy brisk and vigorous debate, this is the group for you.

Presented by the home solar instructor with Rio Salado College along with PORA. By the end of this class you will be more knowledgeable than a solar salesman!
westerns than you can imagine from Hopalong Cassidy and The Lone Ranger to Gunsmoke and Bonanza; and children’s programming, both animated and live action, like Howdy Doody, Disneyland, The Mickey Mouse Club and Rocky and Bullwinkle. But we’ll also consider a few series that probably most of you have never even heard of like Martin Kane, Private Eye and Rocky King, Inside Detective. You won’t just be teased by a few seconds of clips of each series but will see anywhere from a few minutes to as much as 25-30 minutes of many. For about half the series we will be playing Name that Tune to see if you can identify the series from its theme music; for just about every series, we will be asking trivia questions regarding the characters, the performers who played them and the like; and in about half the classes we will quiz you on some of your favorite commercials from the Golden Age.
60’S ROCK: CREAM VINNIE BRUNO
Meets 1 time on Thur 8/4 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
FEE $15 Get out of the heat this summer and join Vinnie Bruno for the premiere of 60’s Rock: Cream, his newest lecture. Cream was formed in 1966 and is widely regarded as rock's first supergroup. We will journey with the band through their early days as members of many blues bands as they move toward the formation of Cream. Cream's music spanned many genres including hard rock (Sunshine of Your Love), psychedelic rock (White Room) to blues rock (Crossroads). Their album "Wheels of Fire" became the first platinum-selling double rock album in history. We will follow the band through their infamous internal band conflicts, to their farewell concert and to the trio's widely anticipated reunion tour in 2005. Cream was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

GRAND DEMOCRATS INTEREST GROUP
June 22, join us at 6:00pm for a social half hour and at 6:30 for our meeting at 19753 Remington Drive in the Palm and Palo Verde rooms. Members and guests are welcome. Masks are suggested. Our speakers will be Kris Mayes running for Arizona Attorney General, and Tina Mollica running for a seat on the Dysart Governing Board. Why folks should be invested in the Attorneys General’s race: As we know, Arizona has been under Republican control for many years and the repercussions of their bills impact us all. From stripping voting rights, outlawing abortion, and ignoring the climate crisis, Arizona has proven to be in crisis and in need of new leadership. The Arizona Attorney General has the legal authority to step in and stop these bad bills from passing and Democratic candidate and frontrunner in the race Kris Mayes is determined to protect the rights of all Arizonans.
Grand Lifestyles | June 2022 | suncitygrand.com
During her time as an Arizona Corporation Commissioner, Kris Mayes’ leadership helped create tens of thousands of high-paying jobs, saved Arizona consumers tens of billions of dollars, and fought climate change by requiring utilities to produce more clean energy -- including solar, wind and energy efficiency. Kris worked to preserve Arizona’s increasingly threatened water resources by overseeing one of the largest expansions of utility water conservation programs in state history. Kris also pushed utilities to stop spending ratepayer money on corporate bonuses and advertising, in an effort to keep rates low. Tina Mollica, is running for a seat on the Dysart Governing Board. She was born and raised in Illinois with strong family values. She earned a degree in Elementary Education and was an educator in the IL public school system. When she left teaching, she vowed to use her voice and experience to support public schools. She believes that strong schools build strong communities. She is running for Governing Board because she wants every child in the Dysart community to have access to a fully resourced public school in their neighborhood. She is frustrated that the Dysart Governing Board has become a place for personal politics; she wants to bring the focus back to students and educators. Tina’s vision is a district: n where parents, educators, businesses and community members collaborate to make each neighborhood school successful, n where every classroom is staffed by a highly qualified teacher and students are engaged in learning, n where parents and educators work together to encourage students, and schools are a resource for social, emotional and academic success.

GRAND REPUBLICANS INTEREST GROUP
We had another great crowd at our April 30th meeting as we continue to focus on bringing multiple candidates each month to share their credentials and visions for Arizona. The first speaker was Rodney Glassman, candidate for Attorney General. We then heard from three candidates for the Arizona House of Representatives: Steve Montenegro, Trey Terry and Hop Nguyen; and three candidates for the state senate: Joanne Osborne, Janae Shamp and Ryan Eldridge. In May we were back to our normal schedule - the
3rd Saturday morning of the month. We meet at Church on the Green, 19051 R H Johnson Blvd in Sun City West. Doors open at 8:30, coffee and pastries at 9:00 a.m. The meetings start at 9:30 a.m. Meetings are open to members of the Republican clubs of Sun City Grand and Sun City West; to conservatives and Independents from the surrounding areas; and to guests. An overflow crowd came to our May meeting to hear the speakers and the “Faith and Politics Summit” panel presentation. The panel was led by Pastor Brent Loveless - Senior Pastor at North Valley Baptist Church. They addressed how faith and politics can work together to revive America and restore the First Amendment to the pulpit and to the people. Special guest speakers included: Anthony Kern, candidate for AZ Senate, LD 27; Abraham Hamadah, candidate for Attorney General; Austin Smith, candidate for the AZ State House of Representatives, LD29; and Janae Shamp, candidate for the AZ State Senate, LD29. Be sure to check out our new website at grandrepublicans.com for information about upcoming meetings, the latest news and other helpful links. Click on the ABOUT tab and read about our Vision, our Mission and our values. If these make sense to you, remember that we encourage all conservative-minded people from whatever party to attend our monthly meetings during this primary season to hear the candidates present their positions and their reasons for running. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions of the candidates during the Q&A sessions following the presentations. As Republicans we are committed to the conservative principles, objectives and ideals of the Republican Party on a local, state and federal level.
SOUND & LIGHTING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO KEEP THE GRAND’S ENTERTAINMENT “BEST IN CLASS”
The Sun City Grand Music Club and Drama and Comedy Club justifiably receive accolades for the many fine musical, dramatic and comedy shows that they bring to our stages each year. But it’s true for any live entertainment venue – the shows are only as good as the sound and lighting teams make them. We are currently looking for residents who want to practice their existing skills or learn new ones for the upcoming season starting in the Fall 2021. And the best part is absolutely no prior experience or knowledge is required. We will train anyone who is interested in learning the lighting and sound systems. With the many performances we are planning well into 2022, and the different roles each require, there will be much need for more trained technical people. This is a great way to learn some new skills and become a member of the Grand’s entertainment team. If you have ever wanted to be a part of Live Theater, this is your opportunity. Now that we are returning to a full schedule of performances, the need is even greater for more people to join our lighting and sound teams. For more information, contact Larry Dirksen – 623-363-5040 (Sound); or Bob Nix – 623-214-8280 (Lighting)

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT
WHAT IS LIVE TEXT? Dear Cappie,
I’m new to smartphones but recently purchased a new iPhone. An acquaintance told me he is so excited about the “Live Text” option that both iPhones and iPads have and how easy it is to copy actual text from a photo, website, or even a paper document and paste it in emails, notes, text messages, etc. How does it work and how can I find it? A Curious Sun City Grand Reader If the iPhone you purchased is an XR, XS, 11, 12, or 13 and if you have updated your operating system software to iOS 15 or later, the Live Text feature is on your phone. For iPad users, the iPad mini (5th gen), iPad (8th gen), iPad Air (3rd gen), iPad Pro 11-inch, and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd gen) or later, (updated to iOS 15.1), also offer the Live Text feature. The feature is also available on MacBooks or Mac desktop computers that run macOS Monterey or later using the Photos App. The simplest definition is that Live Text identifies words in an image and then converts the words into plain text that you can copy and then paste into a social media post, a Note, email, or document; and can translate languages, make phone calls, look up directions, etc. Currently, it works for English, French, Chinese, Italian, Spanish, German, and Portuguese languages. To turn on Live Text for all supported languages, go to Settings > General > Language & Region > Live Text (tap to turn it on). Once Life Text is turned on, you can use the option in the Camera App or any other App that has the Camera option in the app, like Notes or Reminders. There are a few ways to use
Live Text, depending on what device you are using. n On the iPhone and iPad, you
can use Live Text with the Camera app without taking a photo. ✲ Open Camera and position the iPhone so the text appears within the camera frame. Any text that is identified by your device will be framed at the corners by yellow. ✲ After the yellow frame appears around detected text, tap on the screen. After you select the text, choose any of the following commands: Copy Text, Select All, Look Up, Translate, or Share. In ✲ addition, you can also go to a website, make a call, or start an email by just tapping the website link, phone number, or email address on the screen. Tap to return to Camera. n You can also use the Photos
app on iPhone, iPad, and Mac to select text, as you would on a webpage. ✲ On an iPhone or iPad, you can tap and drag while on a Mac you can hover your pointer over the image until you see the text selection cursor and then drag to select.
Grand Lifestyles | June 2022 | suncitygrand.com
✲ If you have taken a photo of a page or a PowerPoint slide during a presentation, you can convert it into in plain text. This makes it easier to manipulate and it’s much smaller than storing text in image format. ✲ You can also take screenshots of presentations and then grab the text to place it in a more usable format. It is especially useful to copy recipes, formulas, directions, etc.
View the digital version of “Ask Cappie” monthly column by going to www. grandinfo.com. Click on the More News>Grand Lifestyles Magazine> to choose the month you want to view. Special thanks to Kathy for sharing her photo of Mikey, a 5 pound, 9-year-old Chihuahua who thinks and acts like a “big” dog. He loves to go riding in the car and will jump and turn in circles at the very mention of a car ride.
Along the same lines, if you are using the Notes app, you can use the camera to scan text and documents. Click on the Camera option at the bottom of page and then tap Scan Text. Position iPhone so that the text appears within the camera frame. After the yellow frame appears around detected text, tap . Drag or use grab points to select text, then tap Insert to place the text in another document.
eliminates the need for additional apps to convert text from images into usable plain text.
Another option is to scan an entire document. Again, in the Notes app, tap the camera icon at the bottom of the page, and choose Scan Documents. Position the iPhone so that the document page appears on the screen; iPhone automatically captures the page. Live Text
The best way to learn how to use these features is to try them out. Take a picture of a sign or of a recipe or of a computer message, and paste the text into a message, a Word document, or a Note. Then try to translate, send to a friend or research! Once you experiment, you will find many uses for this feature. 41
