WEEDS

Friendly Reminder from Standards

We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list. Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

Habits to Lower Your Score

Throughout every golf professional’s career, they are often asked how a golfer can lower their handicap with the magical “Swing Tip”. Unfortunately, lowering your scores takes a lot more than an instant swing fix. It takes realistic expectations, purposeful practice, proper course strategy, and a mentality towards game improvement. I would like to briefly review these areas this month to hopefully put you on the road to lowering your scores.

EXPECTATIONS

It is important to remember that we play this game for enjoyment & happiness above all else. Managing your expectations can lead to more enjoyment of the game. I would suggest implementing some of these ideas to assist you in your golfing journey.

n Progress with your game will take time to show results. There is no permanent instant fix or cure to your slice or hook. A better goal is to have the shot occur less often.

n What you see on television is not always true. The telecast is showing you the players that are playing their best that week which results in a highlight reel of great shots & putts made. Hopefully the data below will provide you a better picture of how better player’s score.

• Putts Made Stats

3 Feet 96% 93% 84%

5 Feet 77% 66% 50%

8 Feet 50% 41% 27%

15 Feet 23% 21% 11%

n The key to lowering your scores is not about making birdies but avoiding mistakes that lead to double bogeys or big numbers.

n Understand that your scores will be a bell curve and most will fall in the average range. We cannot expect that low scores will happen regularly and it is important to except that high scores are going to happen. Progress occurs when we tighten up that scoring window by avoiding big mistakes.

n Accept that hitting a green from a 100 yards or making a 5 foot putt should be considered a good shot and give yourself some credit!

COURSE STRATEGY

We have a tendency to assume that fairways hit and proximity to the hole are the keys to scoring success. In reality, we can score better by avoiding hazards & OB off the tee and aiming for the center of the green & away from trouble with our approach shots.

n Don’t be a gambler, be the casino: stick to your strategy and percentages when playing and do not fall into the trap of getting too aggressive after making a high score on a hole. This will more than likely lead to another high score during your round.

n Picking a target off the tee: Understand your dispersion with your driver knowing you will miss an equal amount left & right of your target throughout the round. If your dispersion is 30 yards left and 30

yards right, you would need to pick a target that will give you 60 yards of landing area if possible. Always pick a target that will allow you to avoid the major trouble off the tee such as hazards, OB, or desert areas.

n Know your yardages: Amateur golfers tend to come up short of the green on their approach shots due to not having a full understanding of how far they hit a club. It would be beneficial to our residents to join us for a launch monitoring day at Desert Springs or tracking your data through any of the GPS apps such as 18birdies.

n Aim for the middle of the green: We all have been tempted to aim at that pin that is tucked behind a bunker. I can tell you from years of bad decisions with a wedge in my hand, IT IS A TRAP! It is always best to understand your dispersion range from that yardage and aim for the middle of the green to avoid short siding yourself.

n Short game: The goal when pitching or chipping is to make sure you end up on the green. Avoid the temptation of the riskier shot that if hit perfectly will give you a tap in. There is a higher probability that you will end up chipping again than pulling that flop shot over the bunker off.

PRACTICE

Whether you have a lot of time or minimal time for practice it is important that you practice with purpose. Too many times golfers fall into autopilot on the range and hit ball after ball without any intentions or

building of awareness. When scheduling your time make sure to mix in practice with playing as much as possible. Just playing and never practicing and vice versa typically do not yield the results we are looking for.

n Block practice versus random practice: While block practice (same target, same club, same swing thought) is great while you’re learning a swing change, I would suggest mixing in some random practice (change targets, go through your preshot routine, work on hitting fades & draws) throughout the session to assist building up awareness.

n Spend the majority of your time building up awareness of consistent club/ball contact and centerness of contact on the club. Improving in these areas will improve distance

control and dispersion on the course.

n Practice exaggerated changes: If you are hitting shots on the heel, spend some time with the intention of hitting the ball off the toe of the club. If you are hitting draws, spend some time trying to hit fades and exaggerate the clubface and swing path accordingly.

n Play: As we do with almost every other sport, we learn through playing and trying different things. Unfortunately, golfers feel the need to perfect the swing as opposed to learning/trying different shots. I would encourage everyone to spend some time on the range experimenting with hitting high shots, low shots, draws, fades, and different yardages with the same club. I assure you that it will make your practice session a lot more fun as well as help build some awareness of the club throughout your swing.

n Practice areas that will provide you the most opportunity to lower your scores such as: Keeping driver out of trouble and hitting it consistently, putting from 3 to 8 feet, approach shots that leave you in a good position, and finesse shots from around the greens.

MENTAL

Last but not least, it is crucial that our mental approach to game improvement continues to work in our best interest. Our mental approach will have a significant impact on how we enjoy the game as we progress.

n Nobody cares: Most golfers are too consumed with their own games to

notice that you are not playing well. Plus, we all know what it feels like to play poorly and have insecurities. Let me assure you that most golfers are rooting for each other and we all want to see our friends play better.

n Stay in the moment: We can all be distracted by our last shot or last hole but it is important to stay in the moment without judgement while we play. A great preshot routine will help you with this as well as simply taking in the surroundings of our beautiful courses.

n What do you control: Focus on controlling the aspects of the game that you can such as preparation, routine, and reactions. The game is inherently variable and your swing & performance will change daily but focusing on what you can control can get you back on track.

n It is inevitable that you will encounter ups and downs throughout your progress. It is important that you have a positive mindset through this process and solve problems through analysis and changing your habits.

n Mental consistency: Golfers need to learn the balance between caring too much or not enough while learning to accept all outcomes.

I hope this helps you along the road to lower scores. If you would like to dive deeper into some of these ideas, I would recommend reading The Four Foundations of Golf by Jon Sherman or Extraordinary Golf by Fred Shoemaker. Please contact any of our PGA, LPGA, or PGA Associates if you would like assistance on developing your path to lower scores.

Speed Limits: 35mph is the maximum on main arterials: Goldwater, Clearview, Mountainview, and Palm View. 25mph on all other residential streets. It is not uncommon to witness cars driving 35+ on Remington between the Palm Center and the Sonoran Plaza where the posted speed is 25mph. This is a high pedestrian area. Please honor our speed limits.

4–Way Stops: The key word is “STOP”. That doesn’t mean “tap and go” or “blowing through”. And, how many times do we witness someone “piggy back” through?

Lighted House Numbers:

During our Evening Patrol, our drivers see many homes that do not have lighted house numbers. Those bulbs

burn 24/7 so please take a minute to inspect to see if your bulbs are lit. Emergency service responders will locate your residence faster should the need ever arise.

I will now step off my soapbox and move on to what C.H.A.P.S. (Community Homeowner Patrol Service) is all about.

Our group serves two main functions: Evening Patrol and Vacation Watch.

Evening Patrol: Teams of two drive around in the evening and check for open garage doors, and streetlights that are not operational. And, we report any other suspicious activity. The SCG

community is broken down into 6 zones. When a patrol team goes out on patrol, they will only patrol one zone as determined by the Dispatcher who mans the desk in the C.H.A.P.S. office. The zone is methodically driven by turn-by-turn navigation as called out to the driver by the navigator. When an open door is spotted, the team stops and notifies the homeowner the garage door is open. Our goal is to provide this notification for the sake of the homeowner’s safety. We also stop when the garage is open high enough for someone or something to crawl under. When we see a non-functioning streetlight,

we stop, record the pole number and file a report with APS. Evening Patrol is a 2-hour shift.

Vacation Watch: This is a FREE service! A homeowner must be away for a minimum of 2 weeks to sign up for this service. A team of two goes out in the early morning hours to check vacation homes in a section of Grand that is determined by the office coordinator. We simply perform a walk around of a home checking for unlocked doors and windows. At no time do we enter a home. Vacation Watch is a 2-hour shift. Even if you do not become a C.H.A.P.S. member at the present time we encourage you to sign up for this FREE service that offers peace of mind.

Classroom and in-car training are provided prior to being turned loose on your own.

To be a C.H.A.P.S. volunteer, we ask that you serve two days per month. That is not mandatory, but simply a guideline. And, yes, you can be one of those lucky snowbirds who get to escape

for the summer and still be an active C.H.A.P.S. member.

Each quarter we select a volunteer for the quarter. I am pleased to announce Tom Kelly has been selected as our volunteer for 4th quarter 2022. Thank you for your service, Tom!

Community Association Management (CAM) provides our group with vehicles to drive (no golf carts). You have likely already seen one of our white vehicles driving through the community. They each display a yellow magnetic sign with C.H.A.P.S. in black letters.

WE NEED YOU! Like any volunteer organization we are always looking for new people to step in and help us keep this much needed service running

smoothly. Being a member is an excellent way to learn this community. And, a great way to meet new people and develop friendships along the way.

Call Carol Murr (CAM) 623-546-7432 or the C.H.A.P.S. office 623546-7553 if you may be interested in joining us. We meet the fourth Tuesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at the Sonoran Plaza. We will be holding our annual appreciation luncheon during our meeting in March; therefore, we invite our fellow homeowners to our meeting on April 25, 1:30 p.m. at the Sonoran Plaza.

We invite you to check us out by attending one of our meetings. Everyone is welcome!

Meet the Candidates

As we complete the first 20 years of our journey as a community, "The Grand" (aka Sun City Grand) has become a major player in the West Valley, with over $40 million in liquid assets, an annual budget in excess of $20 million, and almost 300 employees. Yet, in some ways, we still have an opportunity to mature our operating procedures to reflect and safeguard this new reality.

My goals as a Board Director will include the following:

n To work towards enhancing our financial planning performance and internal controls,

n To further improve our community's project management skills,

n To enhance the performance of our various Board advisory committees,

n To support the adoption of a replacement for our 2016 Strategic Plan, and

n To support our community's achievement of its water conservation goals.

My qualifications include:

n Board Director and Treasurer (2018-2020),

n Service on the Finance Advisory and Long Range Planning Committees,

n Grand Learning Instructor (2020-Present),

n Advisor to the City of Surprise on water resource and General Plan issues (2021-present),

n Author and contributor to the Arizona Republic on planning and development issues,

n Finance and program management experience with major technology companies, and

n MB in Finance, ertified Management Accountant, and Certified Internal Auditor.

My name is Mitch Friedlander and I am a candidate for the Sun City Grand Board of Directors. I am a fiscal conservative who, if I spent money the way it flies out of here, I’d be broke in no time. For those who know me, I am a detail-orientated, results-driven individual who knows what is important… the bottom line AND the residents of Sun City Grand, because I live here year-round.

Regardless of the vendor, I hope to have a say in every contract, agreement, or regulatory matter that comes before the Board. Each matter should be fair, equitable, fully debated. I would like to see a termination clause in every contract in case the vendor fails to satisfactorily perform their duties in the highest standards of Sun City Grand. Also, I want to put an end to no- bid contracts.

I have 40+ years of law enforcement experience, which included national security work. I held dual-state licensing as an investigator and Certified Fraud Examiner. I retired in 2015, which is when we moved to Sun City Grand. It was the best decision we ever made.

I am not a “Yes” man, I cannot be bought, and I will always give you an honest, unvarnished answer. I hope you elect me and thank you!!

GOALS: Primarily Keep Residents Informed

n Concerns about Unidine and how the BOD manages and informs residents.

• “In My Opinion”

• Unidine has done a miserable job with Snack Bars and Cafe.

• Now we also have the Falls Restaurant under their control. What will be the menu and refreshment pricing? If we share profits, we should have a say in pricing / service and hours of operation. Unidine has been problematic with Snack Bars, what's next?

• Angela’s is our next Restaurant to revamp and utiliz e Unidine. Let us not have another Coco's with construction costs and implementation.

n Concerns about our Income and how is it distributed

• “In My Opinion”

• Presently there are only (3) major sources of income (Assessments / CARE / Golf) How are the income dollars appropriated to our budget?

• Is Golf a subsidized Amenity? Or does Golf subsidize other expenses? Now confidential by the BOD, profit or loss should be informed to residents. Presently it is discussed by BOD as a subsidized amenity.

Please take a Raymond Wilton flyer for more information

My wife (Shellie Carbone) and myself have been residents for over 10 years. I am available to answer any questions regarding why I am running for the Grand Board of Directors (BOD).

Email: grandwilton@gmail.com Cell: (847) 373-6240

THOMAS BRAGA REASON I AM RUNNING FOR THE BOARD:

Every resident that has ever served on Grand’s Board has done it with the intention of making our community better. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always turn out as intended. Case in point is the Unidine contract. I don’t blame the Board and we need to show grace and respect to those who served. However, it was a mistake to hire Unidine and give them a contract that subsidizes them. I thought the new Board was going to correct the mistake and hire another company, but they did not.

If elected, I will do everything in my power to get our community out of that contract and out of the food and beverage business. I believe we should lease the building and equipment to an experience restaurant operator and hopefully over the next 20 years we will be able to recoup our $5+ million investment.

MY STRENGTHS:

I love people and enjoy working as a team. I love helping people who live at Grand. I don’t mind listening to people and believe every resident’s concern should be respected.

GOALS:

Water conservation and sustainability.

EXPERIENCE:

I worked for a major shipping and logistics company. I know how to organize a team and get things done.

Meet the Candidates, cont.

This is an exhilarating time to live in Grand as so many of the initiatives we've planned for are being realized!

As a more than 25-year-old community, we have competition all around us for both home sales and for an active lifestyle - therefore we have to keep innovating to stay relevant in the market.

My goals are to amplify this community's active, vibrant and attractive amenities, maximize our home values, carefully guard our financial security, and continue to enhance our array of stimulating experiences.

Since our move here in 2014, I have been on the core committee of the 2015-16 Strategic Planning Committee that brought the concept of planning for the future to our community; spent three years on the Long Range Planning (LRP) Committee and was co-chair of the Technology Subcommittee for two years.

During my first term on the board, I worked to move us forward on such projects as Branding, The Falls restaurant, and improving the way we manage projects — in addition to being the board liaison to Golf (GAC) and Technology, and serving as the Board Secretary in 2022.

My background includes 34 years at AT&T/Lucent Technologies in Sales/Marketing Management and a Business Masters of Computer/Information Sciences from MIT. I've served on three previous HOA/ Club Boards, where my focus was on Strategic Planning, Reserves, and Marketing.

Grand Billiards Club’s CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY

Probably everyone has heard of Superbowl

Sunday, but how many of you know about “Championship Saturday”?

Each year our Billiards Club holds a day of fun-filled, yet top- notch play among its members. Before our “snowbird” friends head out to more northern climes, the winter season of Leagues and tournaments culminates in this billiards extravaganza for determination of the year’s

top individuals and team leaders. Starting in November, leagues & tournaments are established for various levels of skill. The men and women then play throughout the winter season on a regular weekly basis in their pursuit of achieving the overall winning record as top teams. But it does not end there… the leagues and tournaments are just the warm-up for the endof-season Championships!

This year, Championship

Saturday will be held on March 18, 2023. It follows a week of elimination matches between individual players. From 8:30 am to Noon, the Club Finals will be played to determine the Club’s champs in the categories of Women, Players, and Masters, determined by “race to 3” or “race to 5” games of 8-Ball. The pool games are exciting; audience members hold onto their seats and hold their breath at each stroke shot. Following these games, the 3 winners will be able to enjoy the recognition as 2023 Champions until they must defend their title next year. Following a Club sponsored lunch break, spectators and players will settle back for our fun and exciting 5th Annual “Braiseth Cup” named in recognition in 2017 for our friend, mentor, and Hall of Famer, Jerry Braiseth. Previously, the annual tournament has been played between two teams composed of our 5 top Canadian and USA members. New this year, using an all-star format, the two 6-member teams will be comprised of Cup qualifiers, the Masters and Players Champs, and drafted Club members. The exciting race will be the first to win 13 games to determine the winner of this 8-Ball Championship. Congratulations are extended to all the players who demonstrated their best during the day. Pictures of our champion players and teams along with their winning

plaques and trophies are placed on display on the south wall of the Billiards room to inspire the rest of us for the next 364 days when we might have a chance to compete on Championship Saturday.

If this sounds like fun to you, come out and join us for this upcoming event. Better yet, consider joining us as a Club member. Initial dues are $25 to help defray the cost of Club expenses; annual renewals are $15 thereafter. Professional tables and equipment are available to you as are mentorship, casual and organized weekly play throughout the year, numerous Club sponsored activities and entertainment, and one of the friendliest groups of men and women in Grand. Hope to see you at the tables!

When they learn that the home is about to be sold and they will have to find a new residence, the three join forces to prevent this upsetting development.

Part Grumpy Old Men, part The Odd Couple, the script is rich with one liners, tender moments, musings about the seasons and the sacrifices one

GRAND SINGERS AND CHORALE

2023 SPRING CONCERT

“THE GLORY OF LOVE”

The 2023 Grand Singers and Chorale Spring Concert is entitled “The Glory of Love”, which embodies the spring season as performed by the 100-voice Chorus and 32-voice Chorale under the direction of Pamela Weir. Acknowledging various examples of love “With You”, we praise America’s passion of baseball at the “Ballgame”, complete with a yummy “Oo, Barbeque!”. Via Words and Music by Billy Hill, our spring concert continues, in a Gospel swing, “The Glory of Love”, and Carole King reminds us that “You’ve Got a Friend”. Let’s not forget clandestine love, which might be found in a sleazy dive (where “Hernando’s Hideaway” wasn’t so hidden) and confessed by Disney’s villains in a medley of three songs. In the end, what could be more important than honoring the love of our country by singing a dramatic arrangement of “God Bless America”? “Never My Love” was a popular love song in the 1960’s and one our Grand Singers enjoy singing.

THE PEACE OF PATIENCE MEDITATION SERIES

TABKAY, GEN KELSANG

Meets 4 times on We 3/1/23 - 3/22/23

9:00 AM - 10:30 AM FEE: $20

Patience is an inner strength that enables us to accept and grow from whatever life throws at us. Without cultivating patience we remain vulnerable to anxiety and frustration, and it is difficult for us to maintain peaceful relationships with others. If on the other hand we understand what true patience is and how extraordinarily valuable it is, we will be motivated to practice patience in daily life. In this meditation series taught by Buddhist monk, Gen Kelsang Tabkay, we will explore teachings and meditations which are practical methods for practicing true patience. Through improving our wisdom we can effectively work to change things for the better from a place of peace rather than agitation or anger. By using these methods in our daily life we will develop an inner peace that cannot be disturbed by changing conditions.

MILITARY WIVES IN EARLY ARIZONA CLEERE, JAN ZOOM

CLASS

Meets 1 time on ZOOM We 3/15/23

11:00 AM - 12:00 PM FEE: $15

When the US Army ordered troops into Arizona Territory in the 19th century to protect and defend newly established settlements, military men often brought their wives and families, particularly officers who might be stationed in the west for years. Most of the women were from refined, eastern-bred families with little knowledge of the territory. Their letters, diaries, and journals from their years on army posts reveal untold hardships and challenges. They learned to cope with the sparseness, the heat, sickness, and danger, including wildlife they never imagined. These women were bold, brave, and compassionate. They became an integral part of military posts that peppered the West and played an important role in civilizing the untamed frontier. Combined with research tracing their movements from post to post, their personal stories personify the tragedies and triumphs many early military wives endured. This class is online on ZOOM. The link will be sent to the email address on file with your Grand Learning account. Please call the day before class if you didn't receive the link - remember to check your SPAM folder.

Prior to the transcontinental telegraph, political and military events leading up to the Civil War required critical information be provided rapidly to information-starved residents of California and other western outposts. The only things that stood in the way of these young riders on their slightly less than two-thousand-mile journey, were snowcovered mountains, vast deserts, flooding rivers, desolate open plains and warring Native American tribes. They think of civil rights and how the court cases of that decade had effects across the cultural spectrum. Movies came out that dominated the times. The dominant political figure was President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the winning general of D-Day during World War II. The world was struggling with conflicting political agendas and students were taught to hide under their desks in case an atomic bomb went off. Two decades later a Television show came out called Happy Days and that show defined how people viewed the 1950s. It was a simpler time and even a good time. Come and relive those days and see how the major events of that time still have an effect on us today.

DANCE CLUB

DANCE CLUB LESSONS

The Sun City Grand Dance Club hosts lessons and dances that promote fitness, mind-body connections, and social interactions for a myriad of ages and physical abilities.  Ballroom is the place for an hour of movement and education that suits most couples.  Line dance provides one or two hours of non-stop contemporary dance for the dancer without a partner.  Each week of instruction includes fun and inclusion with fellow dancers.  The latest information is posted on the Dance Club website:  www.scgdanceclub.org.

BALLROOM LESSONS

Ballroom lessons are held each Tuesday from October through April at Cimarron Center with Csaba Vadasz.   Basic/beginner lessons are from 4 to 5 p.m.  The intermediate class is from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m.  The cost is $5 pp/hr for Grand residents.  For information contact Arline at:  Ballroomlessons-dir@scgdanceclub.org  or go to the website: www.scgdanceclub.org.

LINE DANCE LESSONS

Line Dance Lessons go year-round with Brenda

Thomason at Cimarron Center.  Starting in January and through March, the Wednesday lessons are from 9 a.m. to noon, but will be held in the Agua Fria room at Cimarron Center. The cost is $5 per person. In addition to twice-weekly lessons, Line Dance also holds a Line Dance Social. The Socials are from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Cimarron Center.  Tickets are $6 per person and may be purchased at the door.  Everyone is welcome, but no lessons are given at the social.  If you can’t get enough dancing, join this friendly group of dancers for a lively evening of beginners through intermediate line dancing. For information on lessons or socials, contact Line-dance-dir@scgdanceclub.org

DOMINOES CLUB

Looking for some FUN??  Come on out to play Dominoes.  We meet at the Cimarron Center, Gila Room every Monday starting at 6:00 PM.  Play starts at 6:30PM.  If you have never played or are rusty we provide up to 3 free training sessions.  Annual dues if you join us are $8 per calendar year and a game fee of $1 each night that is paid out at the end of play to lowest scores.  Any questions, email scgdominoes@gmail.com or call Club President Pat Johnson at 623-203-7713.

DRAMA & COMEDY CLUB

The Drama & Comedy Club presents theater entertainment to the community, performing plays and musicals on the Sagebrush Stage and comedy skits at the Cimarron Nightclub. Our motto, “On Stage, Back Stage, A Place for Everyone” describes our belief that we welcome everyone to our club where they can find a place to contribute and feel welcome and productive. We have many opportunities for folks who are organizers or who want to expand their creativity. Most of our members are not actors! Some of our members do have acting and directing experience, and they are ready to share their techniques to those members who want to learn new skills. We offer so many opportunities to be involved in costuming, make-up, marketing, and communication, and technicians for lights and sound. Do you like to redecorate? You might be a wonderful set designer. Are you a DIY kind of guy? Or gal? Join the construction crew building sets that take you to a governor’s office and campaign, or an old English mansion on a foggy night. If you like to greet people, we welcome you to volunteer to be an usher. What a great way to make new friends. We are a fun club! And all this for just $10 a year. Check us out https://gdcc. clubexpress.com/.

We also offer dance classes at many levels, sure to fit one of your styles, from beginner to advance tap and jazz. There is also the opportunity to dance with the Grandettes, a favorite Grand tradition, and perform in our Variety Show. This year will be the 23rd season! Not only is dance a great exercise but you will not come out of a class without making new friends. For any inquiries about dance, please contact Robin Kachurak, Dance Committee Chairperson at 818-795-4859.

Tucked away in Sun City Grand, three times a week, we play Chess and forget about everything else. It’s true, while playing Chess with us, you think only of Chess, an inexpensive (no membership fees) and calorie-burning activity (yes, it’s true, you burn lots of calories playing Chess). We usually meet in the Agua Fria room (Cimarron) at 11:30 -3:30 Monday and Wednesday and the Sago Room at the Palm Center on Friday. We are a welcoming and friendly group. Our yearly dues are only $2 a member to help pay for more Rummikub Sets. Just show up with or without a game set– we have extras. STITCHER’S

From Joyce Craft, Grand Stitcher member since 1998 I've been a member of Stitchers since the very beginning, 1998! We moved here in 1997 and I belonged to a sewing group in an RV park before coming here so I was anxious to continue getting back into sewing. Our group was very small but very active. There were no "SIGs", that didn't come until much later. We were all just one group and we all did just about everything, sewing, machine embroidery (on very simple embroidery machines), taught each other what we knew how to do, etc., etc. Great times and many wonderful people! Grand Stitchers has grown since 1998. We now have 7 Machine Embroidery Machines, 22 sewing machines, a knitting machine, a long arm and 10 looms. Our members still teach each other and give their time for many charities in our community. We still have a great time and enjoy our time in the “sewing room”.

STITCHERS; FIBER, FABRIC & BEADS

Celebrating 25 years as a Charter Club We Weave and Spin, do all types of Needlework, General Sewing, Machine Em-broidery, Beading, Quilting - and donate our time to help with Community Service. We have a knitting machine, embroidery machines, sergers, looms, sewing machines and a longarm machine. Stitchers meet Monday through Saturday 9AM - 3PM. Dues are $30 a year. Each day is dedicated to one of the fiber arts Special Interest Groups. Come by the Palm Center, Grand Stichers Room, see what we create, and find out how easy it is to get certified on one of our machines or looms.

MONDAYS: SEWING AND MACHINE

EMBROIDERY SEWING:

Already know how to sew? Great! Come join our classes where qualified instructors take you every step of the way. Want to learn? We can teach you the basics and a little bit more. Machine

Embroidery: Learn how to embroider on towels and placemats, make stand up decorations for the holidays, spiffy up your pant legs and more!! We start you at the beginning and help you through any and all projects. Experienced members are more than willing to offer assistance. Come join the world of machine embroidery.

TUESDAYS: NEEDLEWORK

Needlework means hand sewing like crochet,

knitting, felting and hand appliqué. We offer classes on all of these techniques, plus we have a knitting machine you can get certified on. Imagine knitting a sweater in hours not days! Needleworks, as part of Community Service also helps out Eve’s Place on the Navajo Reservation knitting and crocheting hats and scarves. Another activi-ty is dedicated to Knitted Knockers. A soft knitted prosthesis for breast cancer patients, all at no cost to recipient.

WEDNESDAYS: QUILTING

We are a group of Quilter who like to cut up material and put it back together in various creative designs. If you know how to piece/quilt, do come join us on any Wednesday. We have a variety of teachers from nationally recognized members to those who would like to pass along their tips, tricks, and techniques. If you don’t know how to piece/quilt, we have classes for that. Meetings are on the second Wednesday of each month. Caring Quilts are on the third Wednesday of each month. Caring Quilts are made by many members, washed, and prepped for breast cancer surgery patients. We also make Quilts of Valor and Quilts for Organ Donors. There’s always room for finishing those UFOs among fellow members.

THURSDAYS: COMMUNITY SERVICE

Dedicated to making projects that benefit Organizations in Arizona and mostly the West Valley: Early Head Start, Eve’s Place, Family Promise, Food Bank, Hospice of the Valley, Luke Air Force Base, Blue Star Mothers, No Kill Animal Shelters, Dell Webb Hospital, and Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

FRIDAYS: BEADING

If you know what TILA, Swarovski, and Czech Glass are, you know some-thing about beading. If you’d like to learn more - or if you know a lot and want to share - Beading will welcome you with open arms. Come see our display of what you can do with a few beads and little know how.

SATURDAYS & THURSDAYS: WEAVING & SPINNING

Weavers and Spinners enjoy working with all kinds of fibers. We learn about the animals and plants that are the fiber's source; we prepare the fiber with cleaning, carding, dyeing and blending it. Fiber is spun into yarn using spindles and traditional and electric spinning wheels. We utilize many types of looms on which we create fabric for household items, clothing and art pieces. MOMS LIKE ME SUPPORT GROUP

Moms Like Me is a support group whose goal is to reach out to the hurt and hearts of mothers who have experienced the loss of a child. Every day there are thousands of mothers who have lost a child who are living in the depths of despair, feeling they have lost all hope. Our support group falls under the banner of Umbrella Ministries, a network of mothers throughout the United States who have lost a child, and whose soul mission is to reach out with the Lord’s love, to broken hearted mothers. The ways of losing child can be quite broad, from infants to adult children, miscarriages, to a still born death of a full-term pregnancy. Other mothers have lost a child through suicide, a fatal accident or illness.

The death of a child is different than any other loss and only a mother who has experienced that loss can relate to the grief that a mother is feeling. We plan to meet twice a month in Sun City Grand, location to be determined later.

If you have any questions please call or text Nina Montgomery at 623-606-3160.

PASSWORD SAFETY TIPS–PART II

Last month, several pertinent tips for password safety were given—never use the same password for multiple accounts, use unique complex 14-to-16-character passwords, never share your password… We continue to re-enforce that the longer a password is, the better, because it is more difficult for hackers to crack. This month in Part II on Password Safety, we will explain how to create better passwords and how to utilize a password manager if you choose to purchase one.

Before explaining password managers, be advised that even with the most complex password or the best password manager, if you do such things as reply to an unknown or spoofed email, text message, and/or click on a link to an unknown spoofed website, you can still become the victim of a malware attack which will render your most complex password compromised.

NEVER give your ID and password to an unknown caller or email

Password Managers are designed to store and manage online credentials. They can generate strong passwords, which are stored in an encrypted database and locked behind a “master password.” After you add all your usernames and passwords into the manager’s “vault,” your ONE master password is the only one you must remember. Entering the master password unlocks the password vault, so that you

can then retrieve whatever password you want.

Features to consider when choosing a Password Manager:

n Allows password synching across multiple devices. You need access on mobile phones, tablets, computers ….

n Generates passwords if asked. You cannot remember them all anyway so let the manager create complicated passwords.

n Requires 2-factor authentication for sites with very sensitive information. The most common 2nd authentication is to enter a code that has been sent to a mobile phone.

n Allows auto-fill web forms. No more need to print a form, complete it, and scan it for a digital copy to return.

n Provides additional features such as password

management for off-line passwords (such as ATM passwords), automated password change features, password management for apps, and password strength reports on current passwords used. There are both free and purchased password managers, but most free ones are only available on one device, are limited to either desktop or mobile devices, or are “free trial” versions to sample the product.

n In alphabetical order: Bitwarden, Dashline, KeePass, and Norton are the most positively reviewed free password managers on reputable tech websites.

n In alphabetical order, Aura, Bitwarden, Dashlane, iola, Keeper, 1Password, LogMeOnce, NordPass, Password Boss, RoboForm, and Zoho Vault are the most positively reviewed paidsubscription password managers.

What about your browser’s password program?

Microsoft’s Edge, Apple’s Siri and Google’s Chrome all ask if you want THEM to remember your login and password. Ask yourself 1) how easy would it be for a third party to know or to guess my password to get onto my phone, tablet,

or desktop? and then when accessed, 2) how many of my accounts use passwords saved on that device? The bottom line is that browser-based password managers have limited security features and functionality and are only relatively safe.

If you use a built-in password manager (Edge, Chrome, Siri, etc.), there are only 2 things protecting you from anyone who picks up your phone or tablet: 1) the strength of the device’s password and 2) two-step verification.

No system is 100% safe from being compromised. Assess your risks. Be prudent.
