FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

LARGE SCALE PROJECT PROCESS Homeowner Involvement An Integral Element

Kenneth Olson, CMCA, AMS General Manager

The Board of Directors is committed to maintaining a high level of open communication, transparency, and engagement with Sun City Grand residents. In keeping with that commitment, the Board has recently developed, and in February approved, a “Large Scale Project Process.” This process is designed to provide opportunities for the community at large to learn about a project proposal, evaluate its merits and feasibility, and provide input. The Board has defined large scale projects as those that affect a majority of residents, continue for more than one year, and generally cost around one million dollars or more. The steps in the Process are developed to ensure comprehensive and informed project evaluation and planning. They are as follows:

1

The need for a project is identified by the Long Range Planning Advisory Committee, CAM, and the Board of Directors. They will examine how a project fits into the community’s strategic plan, what its purpose and usage would be, and will create a narrative describing what the project includes.

2

A Project Team is created consisting of two Board members, the General Manager, and additional key staff, as required. The Project Team develops the basic project scope of work and timeline. The Project Team maintains the same individuals throughout the entire process.

3 4

7

5

8

6

9

A cost estimate is developed identifying available funding sources appropriate to project type. A conceptual proposal will be presented at a Board of Directors meeting for approval of the concept proposal and preliminary cost estimates to demonstrate the scope of the project. The Project Team will develop the plan to communicate the project to the community using all forms of media. They will identify the frequency and type of content of these communications, which will occur throughout the entire project timeline. At Town Hall Meeting #1, the Team will present the project concept for residents, discussing the need for the project, what the proposal consists of, and its anticipated costs. Resident comments and discussion

will be received. All comments will be documented in a narrative report. This meeting will be live-streamed.

If clubs are affected, the Project Team will meet with them, documenting the narrative to become part of the continuing design narrative. CAM will prepare a Request for Proposal (RFP) for design firms, based on the design narrative created by the Project Team. The Project Team will review proposals submitted, interview and evaluate firms, and recommend selection to the Board. The Project Team presents their RFP process to the Board and justifies the firm selected. The Board approves the design firm, contract and cost estimates. The Project Team will review the design contract prior to signing it.

CONVERSATION WITH KEN

The Conversation with Ken session provides a good opportunity for homeowners to bring questions to the General Manager and engage in discussion in a casual format. Next Conversations with Ken is on March 21, 2018 at 6 p.m. in the Palm Center.

10

Grand Lifestyles | March 2018 | grandinfo.com

10

The design firm will create their design for the project, with cost estimates, using the concept design criteria of the Team.

11

The design firm will also identify what permits would be required for the project.

12

Town Hall meeting #2 will take place for resident input and discussion on design. Again, comments will be documented and become part of the continuing project narrative.

13

The design firm will finalize the design based on the input from the Town Hall meeting and final discussions with the Project Team. The design firm will then finalize cost estimates.

14

The Project Team will make a presentation at a Board workshop with graphics and cost estimate from the design firm. The Board will discuss at the workshop, and vote at Board business meeting.

Grand Lifestyles | March 2018 | grandinfo.com

15

CAM will prepare a RFP for a general contractor based on the design firm plans and estimates. The Project Team will review the RFP, will conduct interviews, and will make their general contractor recommendation to the Board.

16

The Project Team will review the contractor’s contract prior to signing.

17

Final projects costs and recommendation of contractor will be presented to the Board for approval.

18 19

The Design firm will prepare and submit for required permits.

The Project Team continues to meet, monitor progress, and address changes.

20

Upon completion, the Project Team and general contractor will review the pros and cons of the project, documenting the discussion for inclusion in the project narrative.

Board Advisory Committees will review a project proposal when the scope of the project falls within the realm of their advisory committee responsibilities. Town Hall Meetings, Board Advisory Committee meetings, Board of Directors meetings and Board Workshops are all open meetings and are posted in advance in Association publications. Board meetings and Workshops are livestreamed on Grandinfo.com. Video is also available on Grandinfo. com a few days after the meeting, and monthly Board and Advisory Committee minutes are also published there. Meeting calendars appear in the Grand Lifestyles magazine every month, as well.

We encourage all residents to participate in this process for the planning of large projects in Sun City Grand by taking advantage of opportunities specifically designed to allow you to hear, and to be heard. 11

FROM THE Community Manager

HOW IT ALL GETS DONE Kym Stutzman Community Manager

In February I had the pleasure of attending two of the Questions and Answers sessions for your board candidates. The thing that struck me the most as I listened to residents’ comments and questions was that there was a lot of uncertainty as to how things get accomplished in Sun City Grand. I thought that an article answering some of the questions I heard most frequently might be of some benefit to our magazine readers. 1. WHO HAS ULTIMATE AUTHORITY OVER …? monthly committee (all residents). No staff or BOD involvement.

CHANGES TO DESIGN GUIDELINES – originate from ARC (whether

submitted by residents, subcommittee, other committees etc.) and after a vote of the committee, they become a recommendation to the BOD. No changes can be implemented without a Board Resolution. 12

CHANGES TO CC&RS AND BYLAWS – the owners only, by percentage specified in the governing documents. 2. WHAT DOES IT REALLY MEAN WHEN I GET AN ANSWER OF “THAT’S AN OPERATIONAL ISSUE.”?

SCG is the size of a suburban municipality, therefore it runs much like a city does. The Board of Directors is our “City Council” elected by the residents of the community and then there is a staff that does the day to day work and implements the Board’s resolutions and policies. SCG has a General Manager and Community Manager, just as Surprise has a City Manager and an Assistant (or deputy) City Manager. Then there are multiple departments that see that things are cleaned, rules are followed, there are cultural and entertainment offerings within the community, and planning is done for the growth and future of the community. There are other HOAs in Surprise and surrounding areas that are so small they do not require a staff. The Board in these smaller communities

may make the day to day decisions for the members. These communities generally have very limited (if any) common buildings or facilities. So an “operational issue” is one that is managed by the staff who handles the day to day workings of the activity on these 4000 acres. 3. WHERE DO I GO IF I HAVE A NEW IDEA OR SOMETHING I WOULD LIKE TO SEE CHANGED OR ADDED TO OUR COMMUNITY?

There are several venues available depending on your needs and comfort level: Conversations with Ken and Chat with the Board both welcome resident input and are held monthly. You can also submit an application (found on www.grandinfo.com or the executive office) for the Project Development Process. This is a lengthy process best suited for large or costly suggestions. You may attend a Lifestyles Advisory Committee (LAC) meeting and explain your idea to garner support for a recommendation from the committee to the Board of Directors. If it is a

Grand Lifestyles | March 2018 | grandinfo.com

suggestion for your club, it should always be directed to the Club President or club executive board first. Lastly, items that would impact the future of SCG (rather than the “right now”) can be addressed to the Long Range Planning Committee (LRP).

Did you know that as SCG residents you are entitled to borrow items from Helping Hands in Sun City West?

4. HOW DO I SUBMIT A WORK ORDER FOR LANDSCAPING OR COMMON AREA MAINTENANCE?

It’s that time of year again where Sun City Grand will be flooded with the laughter of children. Spring break is always a happy time for our resident grandparents when their grandchildren are visiting. If your little ones are coming to visit, don’t forget that Helping Hands always has a run on children’s items in the Spring, even more so than Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Go to www.grandinfo.com and login. Click on “Contact Us” which is the last in the row of tabs across the top. The last item on the drop down list on that tab is “Work Orders.” When you click on “Work Orders”, it will bring you to a page of links to complete a form (depending on where the work needs to be done.) Once you submit, you will receive a helpful tracking number and notice when it has been completed. 5. WHY ARE AGENDAS AND SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS NOT EMAILED OUT TO EVERY MEMBER?

The agendas and backup materials for Board (and some committee) meetings exceed the size that can be sent digitally. All information is posted on the website for those interested in previewing it. Not everyone in SCG who has registered to receive eblasts is interested in receiving that constant flow of information – and with eight standing committees, two Board sessions, and several ad hoc committees meeting monthly, that is a lot of email (agendas, support, and minutes). Simply log in to the website, click on “SCG Board and CAM” and click on “Board Committees.” As you click on those committees which interest you; you will find links to current and past agendas and minutes, as well as current charters and rosters.

7. CAN WE GET A LIST OF WHICH DEPARTMENT HANDLES WHAT, SO THAT WE KNOW WHERE TO GO WITH OUR QUESTIONS?

6. IS OUR COMMUNITY FINANCIALLY STABLE?

Absolutely! There has NEVER been a special assessment in the history of SCG and no need for one on the horizon. The reserve fund is becoming increasingly higher percentage funded every year and has thus far been sufficient in covering all needed replacement/repair to date. In the past four years the community spending has been BELOW budget and income EXCEEDED budget. A win-win year after year, thanks to sound budgeting by the Board and committees, and excellent management by staff (always seeking to reduce costs and expand services). FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS

ON COURSE ET IQUET T E: IT S EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILIT Y 10 minutes will heal with a smooth surface within two to three days. An unrepaired ball mark may take as long as three weeks to heal, but the result will be an uneven surface. Jeff Hochman Director of Golf Operations

Golf course etiquette is an allencompassing term that refers to demeanor, adherence to course maintenance rules, and dress, among other issues. However, most associate golf course etiquette to the concept of ball mark repair, divot replacement and raking bunkers. Take a moment and consider what a course would look like if golfers were excused from any of these activities for just one day. A well-managed facility would look like a battlefield.

Replacing divots

Most golfers take relatively shallow divots causing a lot of damage to the roots and replacing the divot will not allow it to re-grow. At Sun City Grand, we ask that you use the sand that is provided to fill the divot to make it level with the existing turf. This will help the divots to heal and also give a better surface for your fellow golfers to play out of if their ball happens to land in it.

Golf course personnel across the country are unanimous in stating that, as a whole, golfers still do not do an adequate job in repairing their ball marks and divots. Despite the presence of posters, notes in newsletters and announcements in meetings to serve as reminders, most facility managers believe the message can never be repeated too much.

Why it's important

The basis for ball mark repair and divot replacement is for competitive and agronomic reasons. Balls that land in unrepaired divots place a golfer at a disadvantage, just as having to putt over a ball mark. By leaving turf damaged (unrepaired), it becomes susceptible to disease and/or infestation of weeds, resulting in a lower quality of playing surface. This necessitates the need for attention by golf course superintendents and their staffs, thereby taking them away from more pressing duties. As a general rule, a ball mark repaired within

14

Raking bunkers

Bunkers pose enough trouble themselves. Imagine playing from them when they are left unraked. To avoid leaving a poor playing surface, follow these tips: n Enter and exit the bunker at the point closest to your ball. This will ensure you do not displace too much sand. n Alternate between pulling the sand toward you and pushing it away from you to make the surface even. This will make the bunker surface even without sand displacement. n All holes and footprints should be smoothed over upon exiting the bunker. n Be sure there are no indentations in the previously disturbed sand. n After rake completion, please place the rake in the bunker 90 degrees with the handle toward the edge.

To fix ball marks on greens, start with your repair tool at 45 degrees opposite the flight of the ball. Then dig in and pry up toward the vertical. Work your way around all sides of the ball mark again, going in at 45 degrees and pushing up to the vertical. Tap the ball mark down level with the bottom of your putter. That's it. Note: Don't pry down on the tool trying to bring the bottom of the hole up. That creates a dead spot that affects the putting surface. With practice, you should be able to repair a mark so that it is totally invisible.

FROM THE FITNESS MANAGER

WHY DIDN’T ANYONE TELL ME? Allison Adams Fitness Manager

Submitted by: Charlotte Michael Versagi

Carol Burnett said she knew when she was aging when she put her arm in her coat sleeve and out came her mother’s hand. Have you had that experience? You look in the mirror and see your father’s drooping eye lids? Or your mother’s hunched back? This aging process seems to sneak up on us and we are never prepared. No one gave us a manual on how to do it.

HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? And we’re actually surprised when it happens. Weren’t you shocked when you reached your 65th (or another significant numbered) birthday? “This can’t be me.” “How did I get to be this age – I don’t feel that old.” I’m going to be 70 this year. Amazing. Hard to believe, etc. etc.…. (I’m the oldest professional trainer at Adobe and Cimarron, love it.) For most of my professional life I’ve dealt with the human body that is either ill, aging, restricted or dying. I’ve massaged, worked with, and trained thousands of

bodies and had the honor of working with dozens of excellent physicians. In this article I hope to add a couple of pages to your “Manual on Aging” gleaned from the wisdom of these dear fellow travelers. You’re going to hurt or at least be uncomfortable for part of your day for the rest of your life. Aging hurts. We get arthritis. Old athletic injuries act up. Our gut gets mad at us for indulging in that heavy dinner last night. You get this sudden “zing” out of nowhere and it just about knocks you over. The good news is that most of this pain/discomfort is temporary and transient. If we can just wobble out of bed and get that hot shower and move those joints, most of our discomfort will disappear as the day goes on. It helps to learn how to ease the pain – rub-on products, low dose pain meds, hot water bottle, ice, essential oils – whatever works. Don’t be surprised if you are in mild pain/discomfort every day. It’s a normal part of the aging process. We don’t need to run to the doctor every time we hurt.*

FORGETFULNESS It’s very normal to be mildly forgetful. We all do it – you walk into a room with great purpose and then promptly forget what the heck you were going

after. We lose our keys. We forget an appointment. We can’t remember the name of our favorite movie. The brain, just like other body parts, gets a little weary and a little less crisp. You’re not going crazy and you don’t have to commit yourself to an Alzheimer’s center. Unless your forgetfulness starts affecting your life style – getting lost when you’re driving, leaving the stove burners on, etc. – you’re doing okay. There are times when you will be sad for no apparent reason. Come on, look at this realistically. We live in a gorgeous community – but our friends are dying. We love our spouses/partners but he isn’t exactly that hunk you married 50 years ago. All of us have experienced heartbreaking losses and tragedies. No matter how much time passes, that kind of pain stays with us. It’s completely normal to feel as if you want to hide in bed with a book for the day. All these years of life and struggles can be overwhelming. **

FINDING NEW LOVE You can still have a sex life. I’m no expert, believe me, so I have to report on this vicariously. Two of my clients recently eloped (they are in their late 70s) and when they returned from their honeymoon, they had stories to tell

**Serious depression is another issue. Days or weeks on end with paralyzing sadness means you should call a physician or counsellor and talk to someone.

about their wedding night! It was enough to make a girl blush, believe me. Maybe you’re not hanging from the rafters any more, but there’s always ways to have an affectionate physical relationship at any age. Be creative. Stop being so shy…..

PHYSICAL CHANGES Your body changes significantly as you age – and you may not be able to fix most of it. Your skin will get wrinkly. Your eyes won’t open as wide. Your bosom hangs down to your belt. You’ve got muffin tops hanging over your pants. Your belly protrudes no matter how much you try to suck it in. Exercise and diet can help significantly with some elements of an aging body but most of what’s happening to you is normal. It’s okay for your body to age; did you think you’d look 25 forever? Your goal is to keep it fit and strong and moving – not looking 30 years younger. You’re going to die – and that’s okay. I sincerely hope this isn’t a news flash. We are born. We die. This is the

normal ebb and flow of life. What we do between those two eventful dates matters tremendously – but the end will come. Why not talk about it? Think about what it might be like? Prepare for it – spiritually, psychologically, and financially. Running away from your inevitable death is like running away from a speeding train – the train’s gonna win out. Death is a normal part of living.

my mind and body. I’m not. As a trainer, I can tell you I fight the aging process with vigor because I want to remain independent and strong and an inspiration for my clients. But I think we need to pick our battles and be optimistically accepting of this inevitable change. We certainly can remain lovable, interesting, kind and functioning as best we can throughout this amazing process.

Finally, your attitude matters more than your years. We’ve all met someone who was “the nicest little old lady”; conversely, we all know a “cranky old fart.” My father, one of the wisest humans I’ve known, told me once, “As we age, we are simply a magnification of what we’ve been our whole lives.” If you were optimistic and pleasant at 30, chances are you’ve got friends now who appreciate your pleasant demeanor. If you haven’t been so nice or happy most of your life – well you probably aren’t reading this article anyway.

CHEERS TO YOU

Please don’t think I’m resigned to “aging” and am happy about all the changes in

So…..cheers to your next birthday – you earned it. A physician once told me, “Unless you have a pain that compromises your daily life and lasts more than a couple of days, don’t call me. Most pain passes.” Use your good sense but try not to dial up a doctor with every small grievance. Charlotte is a professional Certified Personal Trainer here at Adobe and Cimarron and specializes in working with the restricted body.

THURSDAY-SATURDAY

MAY 24-26, 2018

MONUMENT VALLEY Monument Valley provides perhaps the most enduring and definitive images of the American West. The isolated red mesas and buttes surrounded by empty, sandy desert have been filmed and photographed countless times over the years for movies, adverts and holiday brochures. Because of this, the area may seem quite familiar, even on a first visit, but it is soon evident that the natural colors really are as bright and deep as those in all the pictures. The valley is not a valley in the conventional sense, but rather a wide flat, sometimes desolate landscape, interrupted by the crumbling formations rising hundreds of feet into the air, the last remnants of the sandstone layers that once covered the entire region. www.americansouthwest.net/ utah/monument_valley/ 24

DAY ONE We’ll leave the Valley with a stop for coffee and goodies on our way to enjoy lunch on self at Cameron Trading Post. A haven for travelers since 1916, this trading post boasts an expansive dining room, with a huge stone fireplace and tall picture windows, offering a view of the Little Colorado River Gorge. We’ll enjoy the ambience, along with an incredible menu that runs from burgers to salads, and includes local favorites, such as Navajo tacos and stews. After lunch it’s back on the bus, as we head for Kayenta, Arizona, where we’ll check into the Hampton Inn—our headquarters for the next two nights. After a refresh, we’ll head over to Amigo Café for dinner on self. A favorite with the locals, Amigo Café offers an extensive menu of traditional Mexican dishes along with several American favorites.

DAY TWO Breakfast is included at the hotel. After breakfast we’ll be back on the bus headed for Monument Valley. We’ll do a little free-wheeling tour of this breathtaking region, spend some time at the fascinating visitor center, and enjoy a brown bag lunch, packed with goodies. After lunch we’ll pile into jeeps to begin a 2.5 hour guided tour. We’ll travel more than

30 miles of secluded back-country to discover the restricted areas of Monument Valley—a sacred homeland to the Navajo, who are the Keepers of Monument Valley. We’ll learn about the history of the Anasazis, early Native American peoples, famously known for their petroglyphs, pictographs and their spectacular cliff dwellings. We’ll visit all of the famous monoliths of Monument Valley—The Mittens, John Ford’s Point, Three Sisters, North Window, Totem Pole, Yei Bi Cheis and Artist’s Point. These are the real life backdrops for Hollywood Westerns such as Stagecoach, The Searchers, How the West was Won, and so many more! Plenty of water will be provided, but be sure to wear closed-toe shoes and sun screen, and dress in layers. Afterwards we’ll head back to Kayenta to enjoy a free evening.

DAY THREE Three: After breakfast at the hotel, included, it’s bags out and we’re back on the bus. We’ll head for charming downtown Flagstaff, where we’ll enjoy lunch on self, with many wonderful restaurants to choose from. After lunch we’ll take some time to explore the streets of Flagstaff before heading back to the Valley. Grand Lifestyles | March 2018 | grandinfo.com

SCG RESIDENT OF THE MONTH

Barry Curseaden — Helping Veterans Nominated and Submitted by: Tom Zmugg and Kendra Frantzve SCG Residents

Written by: Denna O'Connell SCG Resident

Barry Curseaden and his wife Cheryl retired to Arizona in 2002. After golf one day, Barry mentioned to a golfing buddy, “We really should do something to help these injured Veteran’s returning from the war”. Never having served, Barry still knew first hand how a soldier serves and how this affects the rest of the family because his son Kevin has been in Kosovo and Iraq. From that conversation, the idea of sponsoring a raffle though the 18 Hole Men’s Golf Club was established. This raffle raised $27,000 in 2009. The second year this project became a Special Interest Group, SCG Armed Forces Support Group, and they raised $23,700 in their first golf tournament. Over the past 9 years, this group has raised over $513,000 for Wounded Veteran Support Foundations. Barry commented that this financial support to the Wounded Veteran community far exceeded their original expectations and this was only possible through the caring Grand Community and all those involved to make this project a success.

CONNECT WITH THE COLONNADE

Coach Holtz Shares His Game Plan for Success Dan Liguori

Executive Director of The Colonnade, a Life Care community in Sun City Grand

Legendary football coach Lou Holtz once said, “I stand 5 feet 10, weigh 152 pounds, wear glasses, speak with a lisp, and have a physique that appears like I’ve been afflicted with beriberi or scurvy most of my life.” But when coach Holtz led football teams, worked in an ESPN broadcast booth or as he does today, gives motivational speeches, he becomes a towering figure who loves to tell stories, dispense practical life advice and inspire others to greatness. The Holtz charm was in full bloom on Feb. 13 as he delivered a pep talk to almost 800 guests who turned out to hear him speak at Palm Ridge Center in Sun City West. Nonprofit Sun Health, which owns and operates The Colonnade, sponsored the free talk in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center’s, a hospital founded by Sun Health in 1988 and for which it continues to be the exclusive fundraising partner. Community support was instrumental in making the hospital a reality and continues to keep it strong and vital. In his speech, titled “A Game Plan for Success,” Holtz touched on how teamwork, whether it’s on the gridiron, in the boardroom or in a community, is crucial for success. Holtz knows a few things about teamwork. He led six college football teams to bowl games within two years of joining each program. To date, 28

Holtz is the only coach to ever guide four different programs to final top 20 rankings. “If you want to fail you have a right to fail,” Holtz said. “But you don’t have the right to cause other people to fail. Any time you’re part of the team, part of a family, part of an organization, you have an obligation to other people. And you must honor that commitment to other people.” “Commitment to your fellow human beings is what makes health care such a high calling, but you don’t have to be a doctor, nurse or another health professional to make a difference. You can volunteer, you can donate to a health care cause; you can look after Since 2008, The Colonnade has been helping people pursue their dreams, discover or rediscover their purpose and live healthier, fuller lives. the health of a loved one. All of us play a role and great things happen when we perform that role to the best of our ability.” He added, “It’s teamwork from Sun Health, Banner Health and the community that’s responsible for the great health care you have here in this area.” Holtz, 81, also had some thoughts on aging. He joked that the average age of people in Florida, where he lives, is “deceased,” and that he’s so old he doesn’t buy green bananas anymore. On a more serious note, he spoke of the need for all human beings, no matter their age, to have dreams and to have a plan for how to achieve them. “In this world, you’re either growing or you’re dying. Dreams are what keep us going and growing.” Holtz closed with his three rules. “Do the right thing, do the best you can and always show you care. Follow these rules and you’ll succeed.” It’s wisdom we can all use. Grand Lifestyles | March 2018 | grandinfo.com

It’s better to eat Twinkies with friends than broccoli alone! Did you know that eating (and drinking) with friends will lower your heart rate and boost your endorphins, contributing to a longer life? On the flip side, social isolation has been proven to be more harmful to your heart than smoking eight cigarettes a day. So eat the Twinkies!

As the west valley’s only exclusively Type A Lifeplan Community (CCRC), Royal Oaks’ campus includes homes and apartments on 40+ acres for independent living. If you need a higher level of care, all those services are right in our community and you receive that care without an increase in your monthly fee.

Our chefs at Royal Oaks inspire our residents to make meal time the happiest time of the day. A pub and three distinct dining venues (from casual to elegant) offer a wide variety of food and friendship. And then you can speed up your metabolism in our gorgeous fitness center, complete with two pools and activities galore.

We invite you to tour, have lunch, and chat with residents so you can discover why they always seem to have a smile on their faces. You may first want to download this free report, Royal Oaks, Fact or Fiction, available immediately at www.royaloaks.com.

RAISING FUNDS

for Veterans’ Organizations Contributed by: Al Liedel AFSG President/ SCG Resident

Great things happen in Sun City Grand. Many unheralded yet fantastic people populate the homes of our community and travel its streets and roadways. They participate in various activities – be it – art, crafts, bocce ball, tennis, golf, many things that allow them to stay involved plus enjoy and share their life with others – friends and neighbors. They play sports, exercise for fitness, enjoy the plays and music plus join a variety of other clubs. There are dozens of clubs in this fine community which provide, those who desire, involvement with fascinating learning, socializing and personal enjoyment opportunities. Plus there are also other clubs that primarily help and/or assist others. This month, one of these community clubs, the SCG ARMED FORCES SUPPORT GROUP, will organize and manage their (9th) ninth Annual Golf Outing and Raffle

Fundraiser. This Event’s main purpose is to raise funds to donate to veterans’ organizations that assist and support combat injured veterans who are struggling with medical and psychological recovery issues. The SCG AFSG club donated over half a million to various 501 (c)3 veterans’ organizations over the last (8) eight years. This is something that every Sun City Grand resident can be extremely proud and even boastful when speaking with residents of other communities. Where do these monies come from? These funds that assist veteran organizations in training dogs as companions to help veterans in returning to a more normal civilian lifestyle even when they are missing limbs and post stress syndrome? The funds to provide clothing, furniture, job training and even shelters for homeless vets who are continually trying to adjust to life after the Thunder and Horror of war has receded but never forgotten? Presently the funds are solicited by a dedicated team of the ARMED FORCES SUPPORT GROUP members and other volunteers. They

Grand Lifestyles | March 2018 | grandinfo.com

enthusiastically solicit local merchants. This is supplemented by over 200 people who sign up and play golf at two of the four SUN CITY GRAND courses for a small donation to benefit the veterans during the annual outing – this year on March 17, St Patrick’s Day. The raffle (which has many valuable prizes) adds roughly $20,000 to the donation coffer. Anyone interested may purchase tickets to assist, support and honor these men & women veterans. This year’s Golf Outing will be held at DESERT SPRINGS and GRANITE FALLS SOUTH Golf courses.

This is a voluntary experience that all Sun City Grand residents can participate in thereby showing their compassion and care for their fellow man.

WHO REPRESENTS YOU? The SCG Neighborhood Representative Program (Neighborhood Reps) create a vital communications link between the homeowners in each of the Grand’s 63 neighborhoods and the Community Association as a whole. Unfortunately, at this time the 12 neighborhoods listed below are without representation. If you live in one of these neighborhoods, do you know what important information you may have missed? Please consider the

contribution you could make to your friends and neighbors by volunteering to act as the Neighborhood Rep. Maybe you have a friend who would volunteer to act as your alternate and share tasks with you. GIVE IT SOME THOUGHT. If you are interested, please contact Julie Madden at 623-5467473 or julie.mdden@scgcam. com for more information or to submit your name. You’ll be providing a valuable service to your neighbors.

We are looking for SCG men and women volunteers to help with Vacation Watch and Evening Patrol. We will supply vehicles and training. Call Monica Rodriguez (CAM) 623-546-7473 or the C.H.A.P.S. office 623-546-7553 and leave a message if you are interested in joining us!

DUTIES OF C.H.A.P.S. VOLUNTEERS Submitted by: Dennis Hanscom C.H.A.P.S. Member

The citizens of Grand have become accustomed to seeing the little white cars (and sometimes a pickup truck) with the yellow magnetic signs on the doors. Those are the vehicles driven by our C.H.A.P.S. volunteers while cruising through our neighborhoods. In the mornings they are checking for unlocked doors and windows of our neighbors homes while they are away on

vacation. To the C.H.A.P.S. volunteers this is known as Vacation Watch. Those same vehicles are also out patrolling at night looking for open garage doors, and unlit street lights while keeping an open eye for any suspicious activity. This segment of C.H.A.P.S. is referred to as Evening Patrol. C.H.A.P.S. volunteers also man a table at spring and fall newcomers coffee orientations, and Fall Festival. Their purpose is to spread the word about the function of C.H.A.P.S. and to solicit new interested volunteers. C.H.A.P.S. also has a group that directs vendors to their designated spaces at the Spring and Fall garage sales. These hearty individuals serve from 3:30 a.m. until 7 a.m. on those days. C.H.A.P.S. has approximately 150 volunteers. A large contingent of our C.H.A.P.S. members also serve as Sundancers. Sundancers was founded in 2002 and made up of approximately 750 members. The Sundancers serve as

the official volunteer group at Surprise Stadium. They handle parking of cars, ushering and other stadium duties. So…the next time your doorbell rings in the evening to alert you of your garage door being open you may see the same friendly face that helped you find your seats at Surprise Stadium. C.H.A.P.S. meets next on Tues., March 27 at 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Sonoran Plaza. EVERYONE IS WELCOME. Make a difference with C.H.A.P.S.

GRAND FALLS ON THE LITTLE COLORADO RIVER Despite the fact that they are taller than Niagara Falls, the Grand Falls on the Little Colorado River are one of Arizona’s best kept secrets. Dry throughout most of the year, we should be hitting it just right to enjoy the dramatic spring runoff from the White Mountains! Often called the “Chocolate Falls,” what makes the Grand Falls so unique is the muddiness of the Colorado River. With no signs to direct us, and only a dirt road to get us across scenery that looks a lot like the painted desert, the Grand Falls on the Little Colorado River are not a popular tourist destination, but well worth the travel to get there! The Grand Falls are breathtaking! On our way we’ll stop in Flagstaff for lunch on self, at the restaurant of your choice. Historic downtown Flagstaff is loaded with great little restaurants, offering something for everyone. *This trip is offered in conjunction with TJ Travels. This outside contractor does not currently have any vehicles which can accommodate persons who are non-ambulatory. This destination is not recommended for non-ambulatory individuals as they do not provide assistive devices or pathways. This destination may require walking over unpaved surfaces, inclines, and significant distances. CHACO CANYON NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK The very remote Chaco site of northwest New Mexico has the largest, best preserved and architecturally advanced of all ancient Southwestern villages, equal in importance to Mesa Verde in Colorado and although lacking the dramatic cliff alcove setting, the ruins here are made more evocative by the great desolation and emptiness of the surrounding countryside. This part of the state is mostly flat, sandy desert crossed by only a few little-used tracks, very sparsely settled and with no prominent geographical feature for many miles. Only a few low gorges and mesas interrupt the general flatness, and the prevailing aridity plus the long winters experienced by this relatively high location (6,200 feet) make this an odd place for what was a large and advanced civilization to develop. But for 300 years the Anasazi Chacoan villages - most based on a single walled enclosure with hundreds of inter-linked rooms known as a great house, were at the center of a network of roads and outlying settlements that extended 100 miles to the south, west and north, and include a few others also well preserved today like Aztec Ruins near Farmington. *This trip is offered in conjunction with TJ Travels. JEROME HISTORIC HOME AND BUILDING TOUR The Jerome Chamber of Commerce is putting the finishing touches on the 53rd Annual Jerome Historic Home & Building Tour. This is the longest running home tour in the state of Arizona, and will feature several remarkable homes, along with some public buildings. Located atop Cleopatra Hill, between Sedona and Prescott, Jerome, Arizona was once known as “The Wickedest Town in the West.” Saloons and brothels lined the streets of this mining town that produced over a billion dollars in gold, copper, silver and zinc over the course of 70 years. In 1953, when the mines played out, Jerome became a ghost town and the population dwindled down to about 50 residents. The 1960’s & 70’s brought new life to this decaying ghost town, with an influx of artists and hippies. Today, many of the old buildings from the 1890’s are still standing, restored and repurposed by an eclectic mix of artists and craftsmen, making for the most fascinating of home tours! We always look forward to this opportunity to explore these historic gems. Docents and some of the home owners will be available to answer questions and share the history of the homes. We’ll arrive in town early, with our pre-ordered tickets in hand, and start the day with lunch on self, at the restaurant of your choice, and Jerome is home to many great restaurants. *This trip is offered in conjunction with TJ Travels. WEEDS Friendly Reminder from Standards

We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand. We also recognize that there are many things that impede us in this common desire. The intrusion of nature in the form of weeds is certainly on top of our list.Weeds do nothing but detract from the effect we sought to achieve when we landscaped our property. Please help us to help you and your fellow owners by ensuring that your property stays free of these unsightly intruders.

Chorus, Cars, Costumes and Cameras Cooperate! “Is it a remake of Back to the Future?” “Maybe folks are getting a jump on Halloween.” “I think it’s a professional photo shoot.” While not as mysterious as the 2008 Phoenix Lights, the collection of antique cars surrounded by residents dressed as hippies, flappers, lettermen, waitresses, disco dancers and more, in the lot next to the Palm Center on February 1, gave pause to many passersby. What they were actually seeing were the reasons why so many choose to live in Sun City Grand – initiative, creativity, and cooperation.

Bonneville convertible arrived in style followed by Joyce Pettit decked out in period attire driving her 1969 Pontiac Firebird convertible. Ron Stecklin’s 1972 Ford Thunderbird convertible was a big hit. Finally a 1972 Chevrolet Impala convertible with driver John Robinson sporting the tie-dyed look was the grand finale.

Classic Cars.” Could they develop a slide show to view during the concert that showcased decades of cars surrounded by singers dressed in those eras’ motifs?

In preparation for the Grand Singers and Chorale Spring Concert titled “What’s Old Is New Again.” Songs the audience will remember from the past may evoke memories, but new rhythms will have toes tapping in a different way, and new interpretations may lead to different feelings. Director Pamela Weir wanted to highlight this approach. “We all know the song, Shenandoah, but we hope our interpretation will have folks experiencing new bends in this historical river and hearing the piece as never before.” Pamela did some networking and picked the brain of Chorus member, John Robinson, who also wears the hat of host of the Grand TV show, “Grand

Then along came Terry Pierce, Vice President of the Music Club and liaison to the Drama Club. Between Pierce’s encouragement and Chorus/Drama Club member, Cathy Brenner’s connections, out came the boas, disco boots, elegant gowns, jeweled hats, long white gloves, men’s formal attire and more. Between the Drama Club’s loans and Chorus members digging into old trunks and calling their parents (Yes, one singer wore her mother’s wedding gown!), the singers came dressed for decades ranging from the 1920’s to the 1970’s. Meanwhile Robinson was busy lining up residents who were excited to share their passion – classic cars. A 1929 (produced 1927-’31) Ford Model A truck arrived driven by Gary Aden. Bob Scriber showed up in his 1947 Chevy truck. Mark Lorigan’s 1952, two-seater Ford Thunderbird complete with a Continental kit on the rear brought smiles to many while a 1957 Chevy Belair proudly driven by Walter Jefferson also drove viewers down Memory Lane. Tom Altmann’s 1964 Pontiac

The Grand TV, Channel 22, was involved in other ways with Suzanne Kleiner (hostess of the “Grand Cooking Show”) helping as director. Kent Brown and Larry Moloney (also in Grand Singers) filmed this event. This program will be seen on Channel 22 in the future after editing. Attendees at the April 7 and 8 Grand Singers Concert will be treated, not only to a musical trip to the past, but a slide show to jog their memories. This was a perfect example of how a little initiative and creativity in exploring an idea ended on a positive note. The cooperation of other clubs like Drama allowed Chorus to tout its Spring Concert, the Classic Car owners to showcase their vehicles, and Grand TV to produce a show, not simply about one topic, but a showcase of clubs helping each other. As Chorus member, David Baule, remarked while handsomely dressed in his letter sweater, “This was fun, jogged some great memories, and brought clubs together!”

HOW TO GROW CACTUS FROM A CUTTING This Article was provided by

Keith Effertz from Gothic Grounds Management

Starting a Cactus from a cutting is not very difficult. Start by selecting a heathy Cactus and make a straight and clean cut. Allow the cut to properly callous over, you can apply powdered sulfur to prevent infections at the cut. It may take a few days to a week for larger cuttings to callous. Keep the cutting away from direct sunlight and upright if possible until it has calloused. Plant the cutting in sand or Cactus potting soil that allows for the water to drain well. Place the cutting in the soil only deep enough for it to stand upright and water immediately. Water

again after the soil becomes completely dry. Do not let the soil stay dry for more than a couple of days. After your Cactus has formed roots, you can cut back on the watering. It is better to err on the dry side at this point. It is very likely that it will not form blooms or new pads until the following year, but not impossible.

TIPS FOR MARCH Warmer weather is just around the corner. This is a good time to inspect and test all components of your irrigation system and tune it up for the summer. It is also the time to trim dead material and tidy up your plants for the spring.

ASK CAPPIE THE COMPUTER CAT

INTERNET

SAFETY Dear Cappie, I take my laptop combination tablet with me just about everywhere and use the free internet at my favorite coffee shop as well as at the car dealer where I get my car checkups, in the mall while I wait for my wife, and at the airport when I travel. My brother told me to be careful since anybody can steal my information. Is that true? Jim

Dear Jim, Several months ago, we discussed internet safety for your smartphone and touched upon the security issues of using public Wi-Fi hotspots. The same threats hold true for your PCs, Macs, and tablets. A Wi-Fi hotspot is an area in a coffee shop, restaurant, store, airport, or any other establishment that has an accessible wireless network to access the internet. While it might be ok to check your social media apps, play some online games, read the latest news and blogs, watch some free streaming sports or videos--it is not advisable to do personal business like accessing your bank accounts and private files, or making online purchases. Never input your Social Security Number, credit card numbers, PIN number or other sensitive

80

data on a public Wi-Fi network—wait until you get home and use your private network. When possible, at retail establishments, it is better to use semiprivate hot spots like those that serve airport lounges, coffee shops, etc. where you need to use the establishment’s passwords to log in before you can use their free internet service. If possible, check with a employee/clerk/waiter to ensure that the wireless network you are connecting to is an authentic service that they themselves are offering--not someone trying to pose as the location’s network to steal your information. In addition, if you have a Windows computer, you can take several steps to make it less likely for hackers to steal your information in the event your PC is attacked on the public network. First, turn off your computer’s “File Sharing” option by taking the following steps: n Click the Windows button n Click on Control Panel (Settings) n Click “Network and Internet” n Find “Network and Sharing Center” n Click “Choose Advanced Sharing Settings” n Turn off “File and Printer Sharing “ n Turn off “Network Discovery” n Turn off “Public Folder Sharing” If you have a Mac, go to Options> “System Preferences” > “Sharing” and

uncheck the relevant boxes as well as uncheck “Network Discovery.” Also, take the extra step and set Air Drop to contacts-only. Check to make sure that your Firewall is up and working. On Windows PCs, search “Windows Firewall” in the Windows search menu and check “Turns Windows Firewall on or off”. Go to “Home or Work Network Locations Settings” and choose keep Firewall ON. For Macs, go to “System Preferences,” “Security” and in the “Firewall” tab, enter your password to open the options to turn your firewall on, in the event it is off. When surfing on public networks, try to stick to websites that begin their address with “HTTPS”. This term describes transmissions back and forth between your computer and the site’s server that are protected by encryption. SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is another option to look for when using mail services. Its job is to make sure your information cannot be seen while it travels over the internet. Also, in coffee shops or other establishments, do not leave your computer unattended and make sure no one is watching over your shoulder when you type in your passwords. Try to sit in areas where you are near a wall or away from other person’s sight line. Another option if you constantly use public networks is to get a VPN. We

Antivirus software is crucial in helping to make sure no malicious files get into your PC or infect other people who share your email or files. Install and keep it up to date as well. Use Windows Defender, or free Antivirus software like Malware Bytes, CCleaner, etc. as an extra layer of protection if you think you have been infected. Run the program manually. A fundamental rule to stay safe when online: if you don’t need something connected to a network, don’t connect it. When you’re finished working online, turn Wi-Fi off on your laptop, tablet, or smartphone. It is an excellent security habit to get used to especially when you’re using public networks. It will also save your battery.

COUNCIL APPOINTS NANCY HAYDEN TO SERVE DISTRICT 2 Purchase increases our surface water supply

Nancy Hayden Council Member, District 2

Hello neighbors. I’m Nancy Hayden and I am humbled to serve as your District 2 Councilmember. I’m honored to be able to carry on the hard work and dedication of my late husband Jim. While I miss him dearly, it brings me comfort in knowing I can carry on his vision for making Surprise an even more amazing place to live. Like Jim, I’m available and here for you! And I want to share the important news about our city with you. I begin with sharing news of an upcoming election that will have an impact on our city’s future water supply. In May, registered voters will have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote on a way to increase our surface river water allocations to meet future needs. In support of the City Council’s Strategic Plan goal to “Ensure sufficient water resources for current and future needs,” Council, in November, approved a Special Ballot-by-Mail Election on May 15, in which Surprise voters will decide whether or not to authorize the purchase and acquisition of Circle City Water Company.

Circle City Water Company is a small water service company in the northern part of Surprise’s planning area and future water service area. Circle City Water serves approximately 170 customers. In addition to the company’s existing customer base, Circle City also has a Central Arizona Project (CAP) subcontract that would increase the City’s current CAP allocation of Colorado River water (Surface Water) by more than 38 percent. Current Surface Water Allocation 10,249 acre feet per year Circle City Water Surface Water Allocation - 3,932 acre feet per year That’s a 38% increase! Current Surprise water demand is approximately 7,700 acre feet per year, which serves about 16,000 customers. Just like Sun City Grand, not all City of Surprise residents are City of Surprise water customers.

Having a surface water supply is important

In order for the city to pump, treat, and deliver water to its customers, it has to demonstrate that it has an equal amount of renewable water in order to offset the water it pumps from the ground. Surface water from rivers, such as the Colorado

River, is considered a renewable supply. Colorado River water is currently the only renewable surface supply available to Surprise. Having a right to more surface water is paramount to meet future demands. Should voters approve the purchase and acquisition of Circle City Water, we will grow our surface water portfolio, which means we can service more people as the city grows.

Have Questions?

Educational public meetings will be scheduled ahead of the election. Meeting dates and locations will be posted on www.surpriseaz.gov. An Information Pamphlet will also be mailed out in April to all registered households in Surprise.

Election Timeline

April 16, 2018 – Voter Registration Deadline April 25, 2018 – Ballots mailed out to all registered households in Surprise. This is a ballot-by-mail election. The City Clerk’s Office will have a ballot drop-off box available beginning on this date. May 5, 2018 – Replacement ballot voting begins May 15, 2018 – Election Day 2018 Special Election information is available at www.surpriseaz.gov/ waterelection.

If approved, the purchase would be funded through the sale of current and future water portfolio assets. A reminder that Sun City Grand’s water provider is EPCOR and the city only manages the sewer portion of our water bill. 82

WEEDS

Friendly Reminder from Standards We all want to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our homes in Sun City Grand.
